1 Best damn Chicano movie I've ever seen!
I saw half of this movie back in 93' and I was mad/sad that I couldn't watch the rest of the movie (I had to go home) but I knew that I loved the movie cause while I was at home I was repeating everything I heard in the movie. I also did the accent (sorry my chicano cousins) and my white friends that saw the movie with me got a kick out of it. I found myself wanting to watch all of the movie but I couldn't find it at any rental stores and I couldn't find it in any which made me very mad. Three years later I finally found the movie on VHS and I had to buy it.

I saw the movie and I wasn't disappointed. I love how they had three storylines all in one movie. The prison scenes were the best parts and you would think that if it's really like that then people would do anything to keep themselves off that path. The only thing I think they should've done was focus in on the Miklo, Paco, and Cruz's family. You know show what the family had to deal with when faced with their actions. All in all it was still a good movie and I recommend it to anyone who is into good movies.

I think I'm gonna watch it again :D Vatos Locos forever!

2 Non-Stop Action and an Overall Great Film
Blood In Blood Out is tied with Scarface and Do The Right Things as my all-time favorite movies. There is so many great qualities about Blood In Blood Out, I don't know where to begin. The cinematography is phenomenal, with outstanding use of Los Angeles locales. A good chunk of the movie was also filmed in San Quentin State Prison, and almost all of the men you see in the penitentiary are real-life inmates, giving this film a powerful sense of gritty realism.

The plot follows the exploits of two half-brothers and their cousin, Miklo. Miklo is a mixed ethnic heritage. His mother is Chicano, while his father is white. Miklo is a true rubio (a fair-haired, blue-eyed person) who passionately embraces his Chicano roots, but finds that his Anglo features are a disadvantage in the Latino world he seeks to be a part of. I feel that this identity crisis and struggle is one of the stronger elements of the plot. Personally, I can relate to much of what Miklo is going through.

The major theme throughout this movie is the issue of identity. Miklo, Cruz, and Paco all face difficult trials and tribulations, which shape their lives and identities. Paco, fighting a horrific back injury and heroin addiction, finds his life calling through his creativity and art work which depicts Chicano life in the barrio. Paco's life takes a 180 and he dedicates his life to serving the Chicano community as a police detective. Miklo, on the other hand, finds his inner-strength as a member of La Onda, a Chicano prison gang.

If you love action flicks, this one's for you. There is non-stop action for the full three hours. However, the film is extremely violent so be forewarned.
3 Glad to have seen it
I got this movie from my friend Alex and he told me to give it a look. I watched it 4 times before I returned it to him. this is a much deeper bond than the reviews make it sound like. That changes the whole movie knowing all 3 are family, 2 brothers and their cousin Miklo who have been together for most of their lives. When Miklo goes to jail and El Gallo Negro to the Military to avoid prison you realize sometimes blood is not as strong of a bond as some people think.Miklo thinks that the gangs and the fact he is familia with "the black rooster" makes him safe. Watch this movie and realize it is not a prison movie it is about the strong bonds in families as well as the ups and downs of being handicapped. Sometimes nothing can stop someone from doing right or wrong.
4 Subtitles could be better
Somehow Amazon has linked "Blood In Blood Out" with a movie called "Hustle and Heat." Some reviews show up on both DVD's pages, some reviews for one movied are only on the other's page. Most of the bad reviews for BiBo are actually for the other movie. The VHS version of BiBo gives you English subtitles when the characters are speaking Spanish. The DVD version offers English subtitles, but if you turn them on they run the whole time, even when English is being spoken. And the Spanish words are still subtitled in Spanish. More than a little annoying, since sometimes entire conversations are in Spanish. My advice for you is to go off to college and get a Mexican roommate who makes you watch the VHS version 2 or 3 times a week for an entire year. By then you'll have all the key Spanish parts memorized and you'll be fully prepared to buy the DVD. It worked for me.
5 Want to Know What It's Really Like?
I teach gang students in "East Los," and to a person they have said that this movie comes the closest to what it's really like out there. This movie touched me, I've seen it numerous times and every time I hear a line from the movie I hear one of my former students, hear what they want to say. If you want to know what it was the East Los gang life was like in the 70's and 80's, check this movie out.
6 One of the BEST movies EVER!!!!
I was thinking about only putting 4 stars but I decided on 5 with an Asterisk... This DVD is AWESOME... especially due to the fact that it put back the scenes that were cut out of the VHS version. BUT unfortunatly when they put in the cut scenes they took out the Subtitles that were in the VHS... so to get the full feel for this movie you really have to get both versions... the DVD and the VHS (this is the reason for the asterisk). But this movie still is one of the best ever... and here is proof... I have owned this movie myself 4 times on VHS (It was stolen from me or loaned out and never returned all four times) and now I own it on DVD (Never to leave the house again!!!). So if you are looking for a well thought out, acted, directed, and realistic Latino movie you must watch the rest first because after watching this one the rest are going to pale in comparison. Well that is about all I can think of... I hope it was helpful for you.
7 Adoro a t’o Mano!
Where to begin? Awesome cast, who portrayed every available aspect of a man's life. The ever incredibly handsome, Victor Mohica as Tio Mano,(can you believe he was 60 yrs old in this movie...incredible!!)The awesome interaction of the three main characters played by Benjamin Bratt, Jesse Borrego, and Damian Chapa. The language is foul and the violence is heavy, but it draws you into the movie as though you are living through it with a member of your own family. The language switches between english and spanish as though there is no difference, yet even if you are not bilingual, you will have no problem following this story line.
Basic's are three kids growing up in the Barrio together against all odds and in a street gang. Choices they each made sends them in three different directions in life, yet still a bond holds them together. A must see if you are able to sit through the three hours.. I would recommend this for anyone but children and teenagers, mainly because of the rough nature of the film and the violent language, and sexual content (inuendos).
8 one of the best movies i have ever seen
if you like long movies about the penitentiary ,family and so much more than you are going to love this movie.
9 Riveting
THis movie made me really think deeply and cry also. It was so moving and made me appreciate my heritage.

11 Has it's moments
I was skeptical before watching this movie, I wasn't expecting good acting and drama in a movie about gangs in prison. The story of 3 young Mexican/ American growing up in the streets of LA. Each one representing the different choices that many of us take in life.

So we see ourselves utilize our god given gifts to make an honest living. And at the same time to resist and battle the temptations of drugs in Cruz, the artist. To channel our rebellion and energy to push us past what it seems like a dead end street, in Paco the Cop. Or "go with the flow' and be part of a self-destructive life by associating ourselves with the wrong crowd in Miklo.

While Benjamin Bratt and Jesse Borrego offer a very strong and believable performance, I found some of the slang way over done to the point that it becomes laughable and corny.

The story has it's moments. One in particular between Paco and Cruz that is so intense, dramatic and real that it made a knot in my throat.

If you get past the corny gang slang, you will find this movie intense and dramatic.

12 The Greatest Gangster Movie Ever Made
Blood in Blood out is the greatest gangster movie of all time. whoever didn't like this movie is crazy. Damian chapa did a great job as miklo. This movie is hands down the greatest ever!
13 Best gang movie ever
This movie is definitely worth watching. I found it to be very interesting, and cool. it's kind of like "a deathcamp", only it wasn't written by Casear Marsales. It's a good movie.
14 one of 1993's best
powerful and violent, this is a extrodinary and moving drama about three friends who takes paths of their own and then end up against one another. Benjamin Bratt and Damian Chapa are fantastic, Bratt is way better in Pinero though. Ving Rhames and Billy Bob Thornton also star in this grand look at the life in L.A. and the Chicano heritage.
15 This movie is INCREDIBLE!
The story was epic...and unpredictable till the end. The musical score Beautiful and perfectly woven into the film. Jimmy Baca's first attempt at a screenplay was nothing short of Amazing. Few movies have moved me like this one... even the 100th time seeing it. I loved the multiple subplots interwoven into a big plot... I pick up new subtle messages in the film every time I see it. And yes, I too have found myself saying the quotes all the time.. "Vatos locos, foerver carnal!" You shouldn't be in here babycakes", "does it snow in LA?"... Too many to list... All my friends know the script by heart...and thats says alot about a film. Why Jesse Borrego was not even considered for an Academy Award nomination is a shame. 1 of the best movies I have ever seen. A[...]
16 a glimps of life in the hood
dang, "Blood In Blood Out" is truly the best thug-family type movie i've seen. this movie gives you a first look of life in the hood (if you havent already expienced it for yourself) and how hard it is to live in a drastic environment where tomorrow isn't promised. i would recommend this movie to anyone no matter what there background because its truly a reality check type of movie and a very exciting movie as well. i would also recommend "American Me", this movie is about the same theme as "Blood In Blood Out" but from a different perspective and its a true story.

20 classic chicano movie
this is one of the must see movies for all chicanos, and people interested in the culture. it is realistic, filled with drama and action. the story line is great, each character has something we all could relate to.
paco and miklo seem to be on different sides of the chicano culture, with miklo being filled with the pride and "power". bt as paco puts it, he is only filled with his white fathers hate. but he accepts gang life as chicano culture. he doesnt run from his past. paco, hates his past and finds it difficult to relate to that. he is hard as a rock with his emotions, never really letting himself go until the end.
cruz has to be somewhere in between. he is by far my favorite character. he is the interpreter of the culture, filled with the lots of knowledge about our culture's past and present. he doesnt run from the past and accepts his mistakes. ( side note i think he kinda looks like jimmy smits)

i only have a couple of problems with this movie. for one i found miklo's acting to be a bit less than great at times. and ouch my ears hurt to hear miklo and paco speak spanish. they did fine in english, but their spanish was pretty bad. but these were just minor annoyances for me. i love this movie and i think it is a must for any chicano movie collection.

21 One of the BEST MOVIES EVER!!!!!!!
I was introduced to this movie several years ago by a friend and have loved it ever since. It has great characters and a compelling storyline that keeps you interested throughout. The absolute best part of the movie though is the quotes. My favorites are "In you dreams Pedro, in you dreams" (Big AL) "I'm gonna lick you clean" (Miklo to Big Al) and of course "Vatos Locos forever man." There are too many good quotes to mention them all. This movie is a must see for everyone no matter what backround you come from. If you haven't seen it yet shut off your computer this instant and run to the video store. You won't regret it. BTW Does anyone else think Miklo looks a little like Emilio Estevez????
22 GREAT CHICANO MOVIE

We sometimes see who can do more quotes randomly! TOTAL MUST Have to any Latinos collection! Or wanna be Latinos! i dont you but IM read to see there Three Actors on screen again! We've even gone to see "El Pino" in East Los!! and Los 5 PUNTOS Store
24 A Tribute to Life!
I happened to miss this film nearly ten years ago. Today I
watched it for the first time. The movie was a fine tribute to the Hispanic community, and the joy and the pain of living in a world controlled by the white man. The acting was good and the story captured my imagination. The brothers had the passion! The film has much to say about people of color, many of them
poor, seeking justice in this world. It's about Justice.
25 Viva Los Vatos Locos!!!!
This has got to be one of the best Chicano gang films around! Rather than draw on the Crips and Bloods or Norte and Sur gangs, they used the present-day prison gangs to emphasize their point! I gave it a 5 because this movie was just that damn good! If you bought the DVD, you will be treated to the Directors Cut edition of the movie that includes scenes not found in the VHS version or at the original screen showing! I heard a few complaints from some of my Black friends because of how the movie ended, but I still think the movie is a 5. Get it today!
26 best chicano movie ever
this is the best movie ever it really shows you what its really like in east la its pretty violent but great i would say buy the movie or dvd i hevent seen the dvd but the vhs is if you like these kind of movies you should see COLORS, american me, mennace too society, boys in the hood, and thicker than water. and music from south central cartel mack 10 lil rob frost mr sancho knightowl and others
27 A Real Depiction of the Chicano Culture & Lifestyle
We live in an entertainment society where the face of a minority tends to represent the face of a drug dealer or a gang member. Although that is a partial truth to a sad reality that many in our families face, this movie finally serves as a proper representation to people from other cultures and from other communities of life in the streets of East L.A. as a Chicano.

Paco Aguilar (Benjamin Bratt) shows the turn-arounds that many in our community have made for many years now, being able to change from a life of gangs and crime to becoming a figure of authority and respect. Cruz Candelaria (Jesse Borrego) shows how the gifts that are within our fellow brothers and sisters can be tarnished by the devils that are within the drugs that reside in our streets. And last but not least, Miklo Velka (Damian Chapa) shoes the struggles that many in people face from being of mestizo blood, which is true to members of mixed race from any background or ethnicity. His fight to belong leads him towards the world that exist in the confines of San Quentin.

Very few movies have given light to the true reality that exists in our beautful culture, and Blood In Blood Out is at the top of that list. I am somebody who has a little of Paco, Cruz, and Miklo within me. I don't care who you are, after watching this movie, you will know that you have a little bit of all three of them in you too. This is a great movie whether you are Chicano/Latino, Anglo, Asian, African-American, or any other race. This belongs in all movie collections of any culturally-concious movie goer, in any format.

28 Great! Be sure and pick up books by Jimmy Santiago Baca
If you like this movie, be sure and pick up Jimmy Santiago Baca's books! It will give you insight on this movie!
29 Insane! Thrilling! Awesome! The best film EVER!!!!
Even after seeing this film over 20 times, it still is the best film ever produced! Three characters, all very different, all thrilling, a stunning display of acting by all three actors. The story about rivaling gangs in and outside the prison walls of San Quentin is exciting from the beginning till the end, with great eye for detail. A must-see for everyone who's into cult films!
30 THE BEST MOVIE EVER!
I have watched Blood in Blood out for more then 20 times and still LOVE it.
Very emotional scenes, powerful and the acting is sublime from all the 3 characters!!
They all should get an oscar for it!
My whole family and friends has seen it ( they had too ;o) and from all ages they loved it!
Go watch this one and you won't regret it.
You will be hooked on it forever like I am.
Take care
31 Ties From Within
It's always interesting to see a picture based on the ties between family or close relatives. The most curious part is to see how each person deals with and in the family they're born into. Since we cannot choose our family or the position we were born into, some give in to the circumstances around them while others use them to their advantage. What I mean is if the circumstances are not as they should be or undesirable life is much difficult.
Some ties can never be broken! One of the most important factors that shape our life is the family we're born into.
32 Vatos Locos Forever
This movie has got to be one of the greatest chicano movies ever created. For those who enjoyed American Me, This movie blows that out of the water. The actors in this movie are really heartfelt. Throughout the whole movie your emotions are on a rollercoaster. The movie has some very devasting parts that break your heart, and some parts that keep you on the edge of your seat. The story of three chicano teens growing up, and how a couple decisions changed the paths of their lives. The only bad acting had to be Miklo, but the movie itself makes up for any flaws. This has to be added to any hispanics movie collection. If your not hispanic don't be discouraged, my best friend is white and he can quote every line in the movie. BUY this movie today. Before I go, does anyone know what's the deal with Benjamin Bratt on the back cover? He's holding a girl that is never shown in the movie. Bye
33 "When you expect nothing, but get everything, that?s destiny"
Ok, for one thing, it's more then just 5 stars. Jesse Borrego (Cruzito) does an amazing job at his character. Watching him perform pushes me to WANT to become an actor. He transforms himself well, he changes from innocent to drug addicted, to clean and sober.

Benjamin Bratt (Paco Aguilar) does an amazing job, watching his character go from Bad-boy "el gallo Negro", to "la oda." its just, Amazing to watch him for the years of his life, diss the cops, then just years after become one. Making a choice, deciding against FAMILY and LAW.... so yeah, question, if ya seen it, what would you do?

Damian Chapa does an excellent job, watching his character go from Wero to CHICANO RULER.Besides, the fact each main character in this movie is just HOT! Even for being their age.;)
Enrique Castillo is just awesome all around, this is an excellent movie! I can't stress that enough.
This movie was thought out well, each and every character was played RIGHT and VERY very well, and I am still amazed. I've seen this movie more then once, and every time I watch it, I walk away completely amazed!

This movie, was like I said, written well, directed well, I'm a very critical person when it comes to movies, I pay more attention to the outer side of the scenes, to see the mistakes. I've watched this movie, enough to know, that there aren't any, or if there is, I haven't caught them yet. Well in other words, this movie is SMART. Flat out, in order to fully understand it, you've got to fully watch it. Its like a perfect soup, with each actors extra attitude to their character, their sound, their look, adds that extra spice to the recipe. So if you haven't seen it, see it. If you've got the movie, pull it out, and watch it. It's awesome. That's all I can say.

Hasta Luego!

34 A truly engrossing film - I loved it
I saw this film at USC in 1993 after a talk by the director, Taylor Hackford. I do not normally like films like this much, but this was a powerful and moving film which was never slow despite it being quite long.

The cast were terrific and I assumed it was going to be a huge hit- I was very surprised that it wasn't. The best 'gang' film I have seen.

35 a bad habit for kids
OH boy this movie is about mexican gangs in L.A. the movie is really a bad habit for every one, because it has a lot of violence and bad language etc.well it has lots of ACTION thats the best part but the director of this film could hire better ACTORS OF HOLLYWOOD LIKE JOHN LUGUZANO FROM EXECUTIVE DECISION,ANTONIO BANDERAS FROM DESPERADO,CARLOS GALLARDO FROM EL MARIACHI,EDWARD JAMES OLMOS ,JIMMI SMITH,ISAEL MORALES FROM MY FAMILY AS MI FAMILIA.IF AT LEAST ONE OF THESE ACTORS CAME OUT ON BOUND BY HONER THAT WOULD MAKE ONE OF MY FAVS OF MY DVD COLLECTION.but oh well,RENT IT FIRST...
36 A Forgotten Masterpiece
Blood In, Blood Out is a sterling example of the Chicano cinema of the late eighties and early nineties. Along with films like American Me, it demonstrated many of the struggles of an increasing population of Mexican-Americans in a very serious style opposite to that of Born in East L.A. (still very funny). As Latinos have come more into the mainstream, flicks like these have not been embraced but, it seems, forgotten and neglected. This film is extremely lengthy but engrossing from start to finish. It deals with violence, drug addiction, and the function of the family in a Mexican neighborhood in Los Angeles. East Los Angeles is a stone's throw from where I grew up and this film is very versimilar and it has many poignant moments. Best of all, this film is an indicment of the penal system which has become unsafe and meaningless in the course of the last thirty to forty years. Blood In, Blood Out should not be missed by any type of thinker, it has appeals to the blue collar concern (note its popularity in the armed forces) and to the more academically-oriented. Check this one out!
37 Viva Vatos Locos Down Under
I forgot to mention that this film is very hard to purchase in Australia. It is that damn good, that it is the number 1 video stolen from Blockbuster video rental stores in Australia.
38 Viva Vatos Locos Down Under
One of the best films I have ever seen, and I am happy to watch it over and over again when I want to watch something worth while. A fast paced film with plenty of surprises as each person journys through life. This film makes me laugh, yet has its moments of sadness, which reflect what live is all about. The best is that no matter what happens, and how people turn out, we can all learn to forgive and love each of our friends and family forever. A must see film for those interested in films which at least have some depiction of real life and not some bullshit over budget hollywood blockbuster. A real story with real characters. A film we can all relate too.
39 VIVA LA ONDA!!!
Blood In Blood Out is one the finest movies ever made that represents life for chicano youths. Starting in the early 1970's, this movie chronicles the times and trials of Miklo Velka. Miklo (Damian Chapa) is a kid growing up in two different worlds. He is a chicano, who takes the appearance of his white father. So he fights to get respect from his chicano family. Here you meet his cousin Cruz (Jesse Borrego) Candelaria and Paco (Benjamin Bratt) Aguilar, who treat Miklo with little respect, because of his skin tone. So he has to show his toughness to his cousins in order to earn their respect. This is where the trouble begins for the three cousins. Starting with a random act of violence against another street gang, the plot thickens with Cruz being hospitalized and the gang of Miklo, Paco and others vowing revenge for Cruz. A simple revenge turns sour and the life is taken on accident, so the boys are on the run. Only to be caught and their lives are changed drastically. Miklo is sent to jail where he has to start over to earn the respect from the other chicanos, while Paco joins the service to avoid jail time. Throughout the movie you see Miklo character evolve int o a great leader of men in the Prison, while Paco career evolves on the other side of the law. we also cant forget about Cruz, whose life turns to shambles because of an addiction, which nearly costs him his life! The story evolves as time passes and the three of them get older, and wiser, and before you know it Miklo is out of jail and looking to go on the straight and narrow. Paco and Miklo's lives interact again as Miklo attempts to, but fails to stay straight. Their lives are sent in to a spiral as Miklo ende up in jail again and this time it is Paco's fault, I wont say how it ends, because I want you to see this movie, but let me tell you the subplots and twists and turns in this movie are EXCELLENT! I reccommend this movie to anyone who enjoys a good epic drama!
40 The best three hour plus movie I've ever seen!
I caught a couple of minutes of this film on the Television and had to rent it out. After renting it many times I then went on to buy the film because every time I see it I just want to watch it again. Most of the actors are unknown in my country and I'm guessing in the states as well but their proformances are so convinceing that you just cannot stop watching. For me this blows away a lot of the big budget action movies of today.A top notch film from start to finish and a must see for anyone who likes action or gang related movies.
41 blood in blood out
This story tells the tale of three young men growing up and how circumstances changed their lives. One turns to a life of drugs, one becomes a law enforcement officer and the other winds up in jail. Unfortunately, life does not always work out the way we intended and sometimes duty is more powerful than the bonds of friendship or even blood. It is a very compelling tale and one I would highly recommend. I have seen the movie several times and finally purchased it so I could watch it at my leisure. This is definitely worth a five star rating!
42 The greatest film ever
Man this movie was great, actually is was the greatest movie of all times better then The Matrix or Even Whatever you think is the greatest. This movie is all true nothing in this movie hasnt happened. I live in California and i see this every day and i know what this movie is telling and that is that these young people are stuggling through life some make such as Paco and some dont such as Miklo and some just go through some terrible times and bearly pull through such as cruz. I think there is no other movie that cap top this movie i have it on; vhs, dvd,Downloaded on my computer i just plain love it and i yhink if u havent watched it your in for a very good movie.
43 we are LA ONDA!
charlie hommies, this is the best film i have ever seen.i borrowed it from a friend and watched it.then i took it to the video shop and made 2 copys of the film.I,ve seen it a good 90 times and i can keep on watching it.i wish they make a part 2 ov the film.i love the sayings they have,"Im gonna ride u punk".Watch this film once and you'll be watching it everyday believe me its a addiction homes!
44 Viva Los Vatos Locos
This is probably one of the most influentual movies I've ever seen. I still watch it at least twice a year. I live in the urban suburbs of Cape Town, South Africa WHERE GANG VIOLENCE is as normal as eating breakfast. When this movie came out certain organizations took to the values depicted in the movie like Familia , La Raza, respect ,discipline, honour, pride and dignity. These particular organizations, once notorious for their violence, utilized these values to upgrade their lifestyles to help upgrade the lifestyles of others. It created the closeness of brotherly love depicted in the movie and also what can be achieved if everyone is commited to sticking together. Viva los Vatos Locos.
45 Blood In Blood Out is off the hook! Gidee Up!
I have probobly seen this movie 50 times. I'd say I watch it at least once a month, and saw it in the theater when it came out in '93. Blood In Blood Out is hands down the coldest gang/prison movie available in the movie market today. I was reading through the reveiws, and saw a couple people who gave it one or two stars. If you are reading this reveiw right now and you saw those reveiws, do not listen to them. The saga begins,(Cheap Star Wars rip off!)with two Chicano step brothers and their half white, half Chicano cousin. It develops into a complicated and intriquite story of prison lfe, drug abuse, and law enforcement. I am not going to say much more, because I do not want to ruin this spectacular movie for anyone. Just please trust a man(me)who has over 200 DVD's and 500 VHS movies in his collection, not to mention the thousands of others I have seen. Some say that this movie is too long,(It's a titch over 3 hours)I say it is not long enough! Everytime I watch it I just want it too keep going. In conclusion, Blood In Blood Out is a tremendous movie with a great cast, (Damian Chapa, Bengamin Bratt, and Biff from Back to the Future! Also, a aspiring Ving Rhames, Delroy Lindo, and Billy Bob Thornton help round out this perfect cast.) and great direction. So if you are a movie buff, I highly recomend this movie! Five out of five stars! A perfect ten!
46 5 Puntos por Vato Locos - 5 Points for Crazy Brothers.
Came across this video a few years back and was excited to see it on DVD. A definite must buy for those that are interested in Epic's.

Coming in at slightly over 3 hours, "Blood In, Blood Out" revolves around the 2 half brothers and their cousin in the Latino/Chicano culture of East Los Angeles. The time frame spans about 15 years as the boys are in their late teens when the story begin in the early 70's and finishes in the mid 80's.

It is a gritty in depth look at how 3 boys from the same family learned their street smarts and end up taking a different path based on their decisions. What is the core theme here is family. Is blood thick, or those who claim to be your brothers on the streets. In a nutshell, one brother, the epitome of a young gang member witnesses an event that changes his life for the better hence he joins the military and when he get out becomes a undercover cop back home. The second brother, an artist on the fast track to fame and fortune can't give up his street family lifestyle and plunges into a world of depression and drugs after a certain event changes his life. Finally, Miklo, the cousin who is half-white has always wanted to fit in, and will do anything...including kill. When his family rejects him on the outside, he finds a new life in San Quentin, and it is not pretty. The story revolves around this dynamic cast as they learn the meaning of family crisis, revenge, and forgiveness.

The accuracy is dead on. The attention to detail of the Hispanic culture through their fashion, their music, their outlook gives the viewer a great perspective on the gangs of east L.A. It is beautifully done. However, get ready for some violence, because there is plenty, but it is not done wrecklessly. It serves a purpose to move the story forward and you'll see why.

The cast is impressive too. Their are many cameo surprise appearances, and they could not have done a better job with makeup. You really feel for these characters, even the bad ones because you truly begin to learn their plight and outlooks.

For myself the best scenes were in prison with Miklo. Very powerful and very, very scary! You learn that there are power plays in prison and the crime doesn't stop once behind bars, as new families and alliances are forged. Here we see a gang war inside between the members of the black, white and Chicano races...and it is not pretty. There are many plot twists within this sub-story and a suprise event that will leave your jaw dropping. Maybe for some, family in the joint is stronger than your blood family on the outside.

The DVD itself could have been better. There is no original trailer, or choices for captions other than English. There is a short 10 minute documentary on the making of the film which is interesting. The scene selection is great, you can choose from 33 of them all in order. But alas, no bio's or any other extra's, but I think you'll agree this is a great movie!

47 Blood in Blood out
I say it was a spectacular movie, I give it five stars, they were all good actors, escpecially benjamin Bratt, He is a very handsome man, All I have to say for him is Whoa! Damn Mighty FINE. Damn and the others all did weel, and acting was varacious. I would really like to own the movie..
48 Gimmi some chong chong!
This movie has got to be the best Chinano movie ever made. It shows the beutiful culture and life, good and bad of the Chicano lifestyle. It tells the story of how a lot of us Chicanos are living, and I'm not just talking about prison life. This movie was so real; not only where the scripts realistic, but they used the real prison San Quintin. The inmates where real, there were only 8 actors in the prison scenes. In addition, this movie had a lot of funny scenes. I must have seen this movie about 8 times on VHS, and 4 times on DVD. I recomend you get the DVD version because it has a lot of scenes that were deleted on VHS.
49 Vatos Locos for Life
Simply the best movie I have ever seen. I have seen it 23 times now, and love it more each time. It is all about friendhship, values, loyalty. An epic saga, with incredible directory work. Even though it is a 3 hour movie, it is just too short. "Vatos Locos for Life" is my favourite, sentence, followed by " Money knows no color carnal", and then there is the " He puss, there's a can of XXXXX why not help yourself" but then again... there are many more
50 Vato's Loco's for ever
I think that this movie is a fantastic movie it tells you how african american and white people live. It also tells you a lot about how you always have a way out. In this movie "Paco, Miclo and Cruz" get along in life and how one of the friends go from bad to good(Paco)and how another goes from good to bad(Miclo) they both grow up to love each other but one of the cousins (Paco) has to show him how bad is always is worse than good. This movie teaches a lot about friendship and group work and is one of the best gang movies I have seen and I recomend all people to see it.
51 Blood In, Blood Out
Simply the best movie I have ever seen. I have watched it over 30 times and still enjoy it. The best image: El Pino (the pine tree). The most memorable line: "When you expect nothing, and get everything, that's destiny."
52 Simon Que si
This movie is really good and exciting. It shows life as it really happens and lets people better understand the life style that many of us(Chicanos y Chicanas) face. It also shows there is a way out for even the baddest vato locos.
53 "MENACE TO SOCIETY" IS WAY BETTER
THE ACTING IS HORRBLE.I HAVN'T SEEN A WORSE GANG RELATED MOVIE THAN THIS ONE.THE ONE GOOD THINGG THAT I LIKE IS HOW PACO CHANGES IS LIFE AROUND AND BECOMES A COP INSTEAD OF A LOSER.IT SHOWS A GOOD EXAMPLE WHY YOU SHOULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE INTO GOOD INSTEAD OF EVIL.DON'T BUY IT JUST RENT IT.
54 Orale carnales
It's simply the best.I've seen it over 50x and I still love it!
55 chicano u turn!
this movie was so addicting, me and my friends had the vatos locos accent going on for 2 weeks! it had a lot of comedy and one liners.
56 hell ya
listen this is a movie that was realy good and it did it with out alot of effects
57 La Onda
This is the most beatiful movie i've ever seen. I've seen it minimum 10 times and still watching it in my free time. I really enjoyed it and reccomend to everyone......
58 Orale
I love this movie I've seen it so many times I have it memorized. It's a bad a$$ movie. Alrato
59 Vatos Locos Forever
Blood In Blood Out is one of the most epic and powerful movies i have ever seen. Besides a great cast of actors, this movie contains a strong storyline which emphasises the importance of family and brotherhood. The lives of the three main characters in the movie, Pako, Miklo and Cruz, are portrayed using violence, drugs and prison life to express the anguish and mistreatment of the chicano people. Blood In Blood Out is definately a must see movie.
60 Great Movie! ( P.S. THERE IS A SOUNDTRACK!)
This movie is really good. Not only because it's accurate, but because it's a movie that will not bore you. Keeps you into it all the way through. By the way....... THERE IS A SOUNDTACK! -"Bound By Honor"
61 CALL THIS ACTING!
OH SWEET MOSES. I CANT BELIEVE THE REVIEWS ON HERE ABOUT THIS FILM ,THE MAIN ACTORS CANT ACTUALLY ACT .PLEASE, THUMPING YOURE CHEST AND SPOUTING "VIVA LOCAS FOREVER" OR WHATEVER ISNT ACTING!AND ITS JUST SOOO UNREALISTIC I REALLY EXPECTED MORE FROM THE "OFFICER & A GENTLEMAN" GUY BAD BAD BAD INFACT VERY BAD.
62 A Very Realistic Portrayal of the Chicano Life!
I've seen this movie at least 14 times! It's definately in my Top 5 movies of All time! This movie reveals aspects of the Chicano life on the streets and in prison. If you want a bird's eyeview of the Chicano lifestyle on the streets of East L.A., you don't have to go there....just watch this movie & it will escort you there itself. You might as well buy it, because you won't be able to watch it just once!
63 one of the most realistic films about the life in East L.A.
The way of life in East L.A. is realisticly pictured in this film. like I say A toda Madre o Un Desmadre. somos pocos pero LOCOS. Vatos Locos forever.
64 it's well made
this is one of the only movies i've seen that does a good job of showing how life is in a Spanish neighborhood. also "my family (mi familia)" is really good
65 Awesome movie, too bad no soundtrack available!!
Im mexican and I felt bad for my people but to see them get back at everyone in prison was great. It was interesting to see the interplay of the 3 personalities...Paco, Cruz, and Miklo...and how they all dealt with their environment. They all went in different directions but all went full circle. A definite MUST see movie!!!
66 I can't wait for the DVD to be released!!
This is one of my all time favourites. A bit lengthy but every minute is worth it. Very good performances all round. I'm from Cape Town, South Africa and I was surprised by how easy it was for me to relate to the story. I suppose some of the way of life here is similar to East L.A.
67 ITS REAL. NO BS. A GREAT MOVIE
One of the best movies I have seen. It tells about the life. Its real and intense. Oh right ESAY
68 I can't believe it doesn't have a soundtrack available!!
This movie has struck me in various ways that continuously makes me come back for more. I'm not quite sure why though, maybe it's the way life in today's society depicted each character's direction in life before they even knew what hit them, maybe it's the reality in reference to urban ethnic segregation. If you like realistic based action and raw violence with sympathetical situations that are affected by realistic twists, then this is the movie for you! P.S. The music to this movie is incredible!!
69 Exceptional director! He painted a picture we could read.
As a speaker, I am always interested in other's points-of-view. It helps me to see what they see. This film allowed me to visit someone elses reality.

The director brought out the actor's talent to move the story-line forward to a solution I did not expect. I like being surprised when watching a movie. My imagination flyes after seeing drama at it's best. Thanks for holding my attention.

That actors came across as realistic. Super movie!

70 one of the great ones!
This is one fantastic movie. I ran across it on HBO (called "bound by honor").I was floored by the quality! As a middle age, white, conservative southerner I might not be the usual audience. But I love the Mexican culture..I bet some folks were clueless reference the Day of the Dead. The bottom line is the PASSION and feeling. I may be wrong but I would think the people who have lived the life would appreciate the attempt at a realistic picture. It is hard to believe that I have not heard of this movie before!! Don't miss this one! I will be buying this one for sure.
71 One of the best !
This was a breakthrough for Mexican-American filmmaking. If anyone is intrested in witnessing how the life of three individuals from the barrio develop and how their friendship evolved into a epic story!
72 Another gang movie.
It was OK but I enjoyed it more the first time I saw it...when it was called "American Me."
73 THE MOVIE WAS GREAT
This movie was great! I liked how the movie was told. It had something diffrent then all the other latino gang movie themes. I can watch this movie all day. So if you want to watch a great movie see this one. VIVA LA RAZA!!!
74 The best movie that portrays the prison system for Hispanic
It was the best movie to which it showed the struggle of a young Mexican-American. I believe that all family should watch the movie.
75 You bet cash, you lose cash, you pay cash.... Pimpmobile!
This is an awesome movie. I liked it more than Big Al like Miklo's butt! Classic lines such as "Hey Cinderella, go find yourself a fella!" is hilarious! I even did a screen capture on the parole picture scene and printed it out on photo paper. Sold like hotcakes out of my trunk in the chicano neighborhoods! I can watch this movie so many times, my belly will be bigger than Popeye's! this is one funny movie!! Well, Franky's at the door with his brother's GT, so I gotta go
76 PACO IS SOOOOOOOOOOO FIRME!!!!!!!!!!!
I THINK EVERYBODY SHOULD WATCH THIS MOVIE CUZ HE'S SOOOOO FINE!!!
77 PACO IS SOOOO FINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PACO IS SOOOO FIRME!!!!!!!I'VE SEEN THIS MOVIE ABOUT A HUNDRED TIMES AND I HAVENT GOTTEN BORED CUZ I ENJOY WATCHING PACO!
78 Vato loco forever!!
What a movie hommes!! This is the greatest chicano movie of all time. And is one of my favorite five. It shows the real East L.A.: otuside jail presents the division of "kiklas", and the chicanos kill between them; but inside jail all the chicanos are unified, they forgot their street "klika" and they become a big chicano power that don't permit that whites or blacks abuse of them. Outside jail also shows chicano's family problems and values. The actors don't have a big name but their did a great performance. Simply, an awsome movie. My friends ans I have seen it more than 20 times, adn we haven't and we won't get bore watching it. Vato loco forever, ese. Orale ese.
79 Vato Loco forever!!
80 Its a movie worth watching again and again.
This movie really tells it all. The emotion that is put into it is so close to home. I can see this movie over and over again and never lose intrest.
81 It was a great movie. It portrays a G's life very good.
The movie was a great success. I thought the movie had great graphic displays of violence. The actors did very good.
82 F A N T A S T I C
This movie was very touching and everybody should see the movie
83 the greatest movie ever made about el barrio!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This movie really explains it all. No I didn't come from el barrio but my father and my uncles certainly know all about it. This movie along with American Me really set it off for the culture. I have come across many gringoes who were like Miklo and try to tell me what's really going on but personally i think it's a front stay brown !!!!!!!!( brown pride )
84 the greatest movie ever made about el barrio!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

85 Right on
This is a great pictorial view of gang life in East Los Angelos. It gives you an insight in the life a vato loco. I feel the writer diserves much honor for his work.
86 Surprisingly Good!!
I saw this movie late one night on cable, and was very glad I did. This now has to be one of my favorites. Although it is very long, the story, the acting, and the action will make you forget the time. Amazing performances from "honest" actors (with a few future stars thrown in), the engrossing, twisting plot, and shocking ending make this a must see. Five big stars from a guy who does not usually like movies like this.
87 Unrivaled screen epic!
This film had got to be the best film made about life in the inner city, and the problems our youth face. Damian Chapas gives an outstanding performance as Miklo, as does Benjiman Bratt, and Jessee Borrego. The only problem I had with this film, is that it delt almost exclusivly with Chapas's character, and it left out the trials and tribulations of the other two "homies" as they rose out of the barrio. Still, I have to give it an A+ for sheer ambition. Hackford gives us an effective film, and many thnaks to the studio, for finaly letting such an important film come to be.
88 The Best Movie Ever Made
Definitely the best movie ever...unfortunately not many have heard of it, as (at the time of its release in theaters) it was shown almost exclusively in urban areas...also, when released, the title was changed from "Blood In, Blood Out" to "Bound By Honor" because someone decided that the original title could be too provocative (it kept its original title in overseas releases)...my friends and I have seen this movie well over 20 times in the last 3 years or so and would watch it 20 more without hesitation
89 The best movie ever produced
This movie is best movie I ever seeen. I love this movie. "Blood in Blood out" is the movie I would see it again and again without feeling any bored. I semply love it.

Quote of the Day:

The problem ... is that we have run out of dinosaurs to form oil with.

Scientists working for the Department of Energy have tried to form oil using
other animals; they've piled thousands of tons of sand and Middle Eastern
countries on top of cows, raccoons, haddock, laboratory rats, etc., but so
far all they have managed to do is run up an enormous bulldozer-rental bill
and anger a lot of Middle Eastern persons. None of the animals turned into
oil, although most of the laboratory rats developed cancer.
