1 6 devices total?
A Router Simulator needs to have more than 6 devices if you want to really practice anything. This is a good basic simulator for the INTRO material but does not do much of anything to prepare you for the ICND or CCNP material.
2 Nice, but I found online labs CHEAPER and BETTER.
No question, this lab sim is good and provides a nice topology to work with.
BUT, for the coin you have to spend, you may find a better way to go. Check out IPExpert.com. They provide a free CCNA workbook with about 20 labs in it. Then check out www.gettLabs.com. They provide a FREE rack to work through the IPExpert labs. For no money, you can work with REAL equipment. Read the gettLabs Support forums before you start. There is a lot of helpful infomation for CCNA people using their equipment.
I liked Sybex, but it is just too hard to justify the cost.
3 The simulator pales in comparison to the Cisco Press one
I try to be open minded about products, but I think the only reason this product has been popular uis because there was no competition out there. Now that cisco press has released their new CCNA book with NetSim in it, I can't see any value to this far inferior product.
4 Exelent virtual lab! Sybex has created a great learning tool
The Sybex Gold lab edition takes most router commands at any piont in the labs, and just like real routers they accept short abriviations of commands, unlike Cisco's v-labs that require the exact command in full syntax for each short activity. The writen lab activities cover about 1/4 of the most important information from the first four semesters of the Cisco Netwoking academy,
's lab program, it very convientaly puts togeather important second semester information with fourth semester information and it does a good job. This lab is not built the same way as the official Cisco lab set up, and you can't change the change the serial lines...

6 Great Learning Tool
This software sim is great for learning all of those commands that you need. I had trouble using multiple session Telnet, however, that is not a big deal. However, the big deal is on the exam when you are given a simulation that has routers that have been set up, but do not work. Yes, you have to diagnose whats wrong with your network. To my knowledge only authorized Cisco learning centers are equipped to teach this. Just do not expect this software to cover all the sims on the test. Check out the Cicso eSim, it offers alot more than this one.
7 waste of money
this product is outdated and dangerous can give you wrong ideas, i would suggest that you spend you money on buying real eqipment on ebay.
8 Prospective CCNA
I found this to be a useful tool, but it has many annoying operational "anomalies". I went to the Sybex website for program updates, but none exist. I called Sybex tech support, and there are no fixes, and they have no plans to release any. For the price of the product, the length of time it has been out (over a year), and the publisher's resources, the product support is poor.
9 CISCO Routering Emulation is Great!
I highly recommend this software program to learn about CICSO routers and Swithces! However, I have seen other emulator packages that have 1 or 2 more router/switches in their package. So investigate before you buy!
10 Poor man's Cisco router.
If you don't have an access to a Cisco router, this tool is the way to go. Also, there are books that cover the Cisco IOS extensively: "Cisco IOS for IP Routing" by Andrew Colton and "Cisco IOS in a Nutshell" by James Boney. These two should take a long way to a very good understanding of Cisco routing.
11 Great program when studying for the new CCNA 607 exam!
This is a nice put together program that will help prepare you for the new SIMs that Cisco is using on the new 607 CCNA exam.
If you want to understand the sims as well as gain hands-on knowledge, then this is the software you need, along with Todd Lammle's book - of course!
12 I really, really like this product
I used this in my CCNA class at Cisco and it was awesome. Instead of sharing equipment, I had my own network to configure.
The sims in this product are just like the sims I received on the exam.
If you want to pass the new 607 product, check this out...
COOOL!
13 ** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ! **
We used this in my Cisco class just the other day! What an awesome training too. Not only useful for passing the exams but useful in real-world configurations - instead of buying 3-4 routers, you can simulate them. While it doesn;t do all of the fancy stuff (Access Lists, Priority lists, etc.) it does get the basics - AND, the "fancy stuff" can be manually added! Then you can dump the config onto your REAL ROUTERS and you are ready to go !! I can not recommend this highly enough!
14 Good foundation, but not needs updating for 607 test...
This is a good package to get used to configuring routers and switches, but it does not provide enough to pass the new (607) test. Your editorial reviews state that the Virtual Gold package gives you "everything and more" to handle the simulations. This is flatly not true--the actual test simulations are totally different than your package. I was very frustrated when I took the test to find the simulations so completely different. Also, they had troubleshooting simulations your package did not offer, as well as portions not even covered by your package! Someone obviously just changed the 640-507 to 640-607 in their editorial review. This package needs to be updated, and someone needs to pay attention to the accuracy of their claims! This may have been great for the 507 exam, but not the new one.
15 Software will not run
After trying three different CD's I gave up. My system is more than the min required. I could not get the cd-rom to run. I veven contacted Sybex via e-mail. They were helphful, however nothing helped.
16 Specific and not clear configuration needed
As a lab, i didn't have the oportuniti to know if it was good, as nobody in the company could answer why two different CD's were failing in the execution of the program.
Only i have to say, unless you verify first that you have the right configuration (and that's something that you will have to find out by yourself when you buy the product, as the configuration shown in the box is not enough) it's better not to waist your time on this product.
17 Excellent Lab
The best lab I found, there is no substitue.
18 Great Study Tool
I used this lab plus the Sybex CCNA e-Trainer for 3 weeks and passed 640-507 with a 945/1000 score. This lab isn't perfect as it doesn't replicate the entire IOS command set, but it does give you what you need to become a CCNA.
19 Experience is Golden
This Lab is excellent, you can not go for the CCNA test if you dont know the sh commands, or basic command outputs, its good enough to pass the test however if you really want some hardcore CCNA practice get RouterSim v 3. One thing that Sybex CCNA gold lacks are Debug commands.
good luck.
20 More to be desired
I did not by Todd Lammle's book. Fortunately, or unfortunately, I purchased another book for study before I realized I would need access to routers to pass this test. Unable to afford real routers I purchased through Amazon this product hoping to get the experience I needed to pass the CCNA test. The book I use assumes I have access to a real router. When I try the commands about 25% of them fail using this simulator.
This product may get me through the CCNA exam, but it ain't simulating the real thing.
21 Quite Good But Some Annoying Faults
I got this as part of a CCNA course so that we can practice at home. For most practice labs used in the Sybex Book by Todd Lammle it is quite adequate. However given the expensive price of this it irks me no end that one of the biggest problems is with the help and the autocompletion with tab on the cisco router. Often you press a command such as log? and it will only show a couple of the options or say ambiguous command. I think this a big failing considering that people using it are learners. You definitely need to use a real router as well
22 Best Lab Out There
I bought the first edition and it was average, with some bugs. The Gold Edition is much better, has the bugs ironed out and the labs are pretty useful. It's expensive though, when a couple of hundred more would get you a new 800 series CISCO router, or a secondhand 1700 series one.
23 Has what it takes....for very little cash....
Instead of buying routers, I bought the Sybex CCNA Virtual Lab. It was good and I gave it a great Amazon rating. However, this is, and I am guesing here, the Second edition, which basically is just more routers, switches and hosts to configure and work within a fixed network environment. Works great, with more supported commands and worth every cent --much better then any Cisco software product! You MUST get the Todd Lammle Sybex CCNA Study Guide to read along with this product and then practice the labs. Good luck!
