1 get this printer!
My PIXMA ip6000d arrived yesterday, and I have only printed three photos so far--two from a digital camera and one from a scanned print. But I am ecstatic and amazed at the quality I see. These photos are better prints than I have received from photo labs recently! The clarity of one image of my pet cockatiel on my shoulder is so detailed, that the texture of my t-shirt fabric is visible! Absolutely astounding!

Two of the photos I've printed were both taken with a Canon digital camera, but the third was from a B&W print scanned to my computer, and I can't tell the difference from the scanned print-out to the original photograph. In this case, I feel that regardless of your brand of digital camera, quality will still be outstanding.

My plans are to use this printer specifically for photo printing, so right now, I can't speak for document quality, but if you're looking for a photo-only printer, go no further. I can't recommend this printer highly enough.
2 Forget Epsons!!
I've had many models of the Epsons in the past. Luckily, I purchased the additional warranty from the store I purchased them from. Within a few months, I was always bringing my Epson back to the store for malfunctions such as ink splattering, cranking noises, ink clogs, and the paper feed was just rediculous! Everytime, the store told me that I was able to just get a new printer from the shelf in exchange, and I always picked an Epson because of all the hype about how wonderful they are with photo printing, and how they're "supposedly" the best photo printers on the market. So with the last one, I decided to go with something other than Epson and came across this Canon. I couldn't be happier!!! Pictures turn out fantastic, its fast, color quality is faboulous, not noisey, and the ink doesn't clog or splatter. I love it so much that I purchased one for my mother so she can start printing. Overall, a fantastic printer!
3 Great printer!
I purchased this printer to use with my Kodak Easy Share camera back in November. I was surprised at the quality of the photos. I would recommend using Canon photo paper as the pictures looked the best on that. HP paper works well too. I also agree with the reviewer who said not to use Kodak photo paper with this printer. The pictures are very dull. I have printed more than 100 4 x 6 prints on this. Mostly, I print by inserting the memory card, but I've printed photos from the computer and directly from the camera. I couldn't see any difference in the quality. I printed an 8 x 10 print right from the memory card and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of that as well. I also like the fact that it has 6 ink tanks. I've just had to replace the two original photo inks, the regular inks are still going strong. Replacing one or two at a time is much easier on the pocket book! It is also nice to be able to print photos without having to power up the computer. Over all I'm very pleased with this printer and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys photography as a hobby.
4 Wow
I just got this printer, and so far I am very impressed. I have only printed from my camera's memory card (inserted into the printer) so far, and I am so impressed with the quality of the photos. They are beautiful and look just as good as lab prints. It is incredibly easy to edit or print different photo sizes -- all using only the printer.
5 Excellent Piece of Kit
I've owned this wonderful piece of kit for a few months now, and it still impresses me every time I use it.

It's always refreshing when something does the job first time, every time, without any fuss, bother or headache. It installed just fine; all instructions were clear, concise and easy to follow - even my mother could do it.

Operationally, it's nigh-on silent, which is a relief (the last printer I owned, even though inkjet, sounded more like a daisy wheel), and having the six cartridges saves a lot of waste. It does seem to get through them at a rate of knots though, which is the only fault I have with it - its draft mode just isn't draft enough (I tend to print a lot of posters, and need to get them just-so).

The quality of the prints is impressive, and for those that are concerned about printed photos versus real ones, don't be: printed photos don't bleed when wet, and the quality difference is almost impossible to distinguish (obviously, this is somewhat reliant on the quality of your camera). One tip though, don't use Kodak paper with this printer, the quality is terrible in comparison with other, cheaper, varieties.

The memory card reader is great too, and not only can you print directly from it (borderless too), but it appears as a drive in My Computer as well (which is handy for me, meaning I don't have to dig out the wires for the camera to be able to get at the photos).

Finally, the ability to print directly onto a CD sounds like a fad, but it's not. Being able to send professional-looking CDs/DVDs to friends, without having the effect ruined by handwritten labels is great. (I'm not aware of any limitation for priting in the US, this model was bought in the UK)

Overall, I can't recommend this enough. For what it does, it should be twice the price.
6 It's up to you
I got my printer a month ago at J&R, basing on the reviews that I read, I was excited and at the same time a little bit doubtful if I spent my money wisely. But when it arrived and printed a couple of photos, I was completely satisfied. The results were awsome, the photos look like they were processed in the lab. The ink tanks are cool (photomagenta easily rans out so don't forget to stock up), no wastage, you only change what is used up and you can easily see how much ink are left (the ink tanks are transparent.) Not only does it work with photos, it goes well also with my documents (just don't forget to click grayscale so you won't waste any color ink) and the easy-webprint is just great.

My only problem is printing photos with small megapixel and size, they are kinda blury and you can't see the blur (in the print preview) until you print them, so I advise use large sizes in printing (maximize your camera), and hopefully Canon can fix this problem with their print preview with their Easy-PhotoPrint.

It's easy to use and the program along with the printer is user friendly. This is my first photo printer though, so I won't make any comparison with other printers, its still up to you to decide. For me I'm completely satisfied.

7 I believe I made an excellent choice!
This is my first photo printer and I also purchased a Canon PowerShot digital camera. I printed 110 photo's this weekend and the quality of the photo's are excellent, much better than I ever imagined! Printing 110 photo's completely used up the Photo Cyan and Photo Magenta ink tanks. Barly used the Black and slightly used the other colors. So, I am back on Amazon.com to purchase those two tanks only! I am having a hard time trying to figure out how to crop photos directly from the printer and using the other printer options but that could be user error since digital is so new to me.

However, I find the instructions not very detailed or indepth as to all the options the printer offers. The directions are easy to understand for what it shows you, just doesn't explain everthing the printer was said to offer. Ex... fully explains how to print from the memory card but does not give the same explaination of how to print directly from the camera. But, I'll keep working on that! Thank you!
8 Fantastic Printer!
I just purchased this printer through Amazon on 2/1/05 and think it is amazing. I wasn't able to find many reviews on this printer through CNet or ePinions.com but decided to purchase it anyways based on what reviews I had read. I am very pleased with my decision!

The picture quality is superb, just as good if not better than prints you would receive from a lab. The photography buffs here at work don't beleive I printed them myself!

Setup was super easy, but buy yourself a USB cable from an etailer on ebay or somewhere else. I went to my local Radio Shack and they charged $25.00 for a cable I could have purchased online for $7.00 :(

Ink is also purchased at low cost online, and having six opaque cartriges versus one or two multi-cartriges will certainly reduce ink replacement costs over time.

Back to the printer. I have printed 20-25 pictures so far and cannot begin to tell yo how easy the Canon software is to use. I bought this printer for my wife who wants to convert all our digital pictures into a picture album, so she insisted on buying a high-quality printer that was really easy to use.

The software that comes with the printer hits the bullseye. The editing capabilities are only so-so when compared to other software, however printing pictures proved to be really easy for the "PC Challenged" in my household. The software comes with a 3-step process that makes printing high-quality phots a snap.

Along with our purchase we bought a 120 pack of Canon high-gloss 4x6 borderless photo paper. This paper has the exact same look-feel, quality as the paper we receive from our local photo lab (Overlake Photo)

This printer comes highly recommended from me!

9 quality photos
I've always been hesitated about buying a photo printer; I finally took a chance with this canon pixma 6000 photo printer. I've read different reviews, at first I was debating on the hp printer but I've read that it doesn't work with the operating system XP, and has only one block of ink cartridge. That's what made me decided on the canon, for the fact it had separate cartridges, so if one color runs out u just replace that one and don't have to toss the rest of them out. For the picture quality, I found it to be a high quality photo that you would get when you take it somewhere. I found that the canon printer should only use the canon paper to print on for the best quality picture. The setup it rather simple you don't need brain work. I find it to be worth the money.
10 Incredible Printer

First let me say, that this is my first photo printer so I have no point of reference, compared to other photo printers out there. One thing is certain, my old HP Deskjet(RIP) is an archaic device compared to the Canon. Photo print quality is so good my wife could not believe that I actually printed one of my son's pictures in a home computer (photo lab quality for sure). Regular documents prints also enjoy extremely good print quality and the duplexing feature is very neat.

Setup was and installation was a breeze, and the included software is very user friendly. I love the ability to use the top feeder or the tray, I am almost always guaranteed to have paper in the printer.

I have only used the memory slots on the front once or twice to see the pics from my camera memory card, but have never actually printed direct. I like the feature, but I'd rather manipulate the picture in the computer.

I am totally thrilled with this printer and would recommend it to anyone looking for an inexpensive quality product.
11 Great, simple printer
I think this printer offers good value, esp given that it uses six inks; many printers in this price range only have 3-4 inks. I guess because it is not very compact. I got this for my parents who are not very computer savvy, to let them print their own pictures. I use a website to upload pictures to print (which I think is still the best value), but I just cannot see them doing that. The printer is great because it doesn't even have to be connected to the computer (another potential problem for them). Using the memory card slot is faster than the pictbridge connection. Now they print pictures on their own, instead of the pictures being in their camera for eons.

Thank you to all the previous reviewers who helped me choose to buy this printer. I liked the point about being able to replace individual ink colors separately. I am very happy with my decision.
12 Great printer
After weeks of reading reviews about photo printers, I purchased the Canon ip6000D based on it's high ratings. So far it has been a great printer.
Pro's
easy set up
4x6 photos done in around 30 seconds
great picture quality(i couldn't tell the difference when compared with digital photo's from my drugstore)
Don't need a computer to get pictures from your camera
6 seperate toner cartridges
Transfer of files very quick
Quiet printing

Con's
LCD screen is hard to read if not at the right angle (minor annoyance, but doesn't affect quaility)
Doesn't come with a usb cable
best pictues with canon glossy paper - other paper manufactures
don't provide as good quality

I highly recommend this printer.
** update 1/28 - LCD screen can be fixed by switching the contrast on the printer, which of course was written in the manual!!
13 Pro's or Con's?
This is an awesome printer! I purchased this because of the high reviews on this site in hopes that everyone knew what they were talking about:)
It prints quickly with high quality results. I currently only have it hooked up to a digital camera (not PC) for the very purpose of using it for photo shoots. If you are one to worry about weight, this printer is not the best option because it is bulky and a bit heavy.
Although you may use any PictBridge compatible printer, I purchased this with the Olympus D540 3.2 (purchased on this site). The both are compatible and lower in cost. I paid under $400 for the pair so check out the Olympus D540 if you're wanting to get a a quality set (printer and camera).
14 very good printer and customer service, but a few oversights
Naturally, when you are spending over $150 on a photo printer, you expect an excellent result. This printer delivers. The results when printed on photo paper are indistinguishable from a professionally developed photograph in most instances.

I had some problems getting the printer to work initially; it was dead on arrival. This is where I decided I would discover what kind of company I was dealing with. I called canon and was, within five minutes, being told I would have a new printer overnighted to me. It arrived and worked beautifully.

Not only did it arrive, it came with a fully paid return shipping label and instructions that I could keep all of the extra ink (around $70 worth), the extra print head, the free samples of photo paper that came with the printer etc

I do have four complaints with the printer. First, I have found, that if one is printing extremes of white light on a human face, it tends to print out as a large white splotch rather than a finely graded result. The result looks somewhat like the person was heavily sweating and had a lot of glare; this is my main complaint.

Second, the printer requires a USB cable to connect to your computer but does not have one packaged with it. Radioshack supplied me with one for around five dollars; surely canon could have put one in the box.

Third, I have a dual boot computer that runs on windows and linux. Setting up this printer was easy in windows and the software it comes with makes it a breeze to print pictures on any size paper. However, canon has no linux support. If I had known this beforehand, I might have actually gone with an equivalent Hewlett Packard printer as HP has a lot of linux support.

Fourth, the software it comes with deals only with .jpg files. If you have something in any other format, for example, you have to have a separate program that can convert it into .jpg format. These are easily available over the web, but it seems like a reasonable oversight that canon doesn't support anything else out of the box.

My absolute favourite feature of this printer is the clear ink cartridges: this was what initially made me consider canon above anyone else. The fact that I can see how full the print cartridges are is a wonderfully liberating feature; I can actually SEE what's going on in there. Combined with the fact that each colour is an individual cartridge and very inexpensive, canon have a winning idea here.

In summary, I have to say I am extremely pleased with my purchase. None of the above complaints is anything major, probably the worst is the lack of a USB cable which is easily correctable; I imagine you could order one through amazon so it is delivered simultaneously.
15 Great features and good value.
This is a great printer. It was incredibly easy to setup.
Within 15 mins of getting it out of the box I was holding my first print.

The quality of the print was very good (greens were a little weak). I used epson's glossy photo-paper. To my eye there was little difference to canon's paper. The fact that you don't have to turn on your PC to print out your snaps is a real plus. Also the ability to hook-up to your camera, PDA, Cell Phone or just plug in the CF or SD card is a great feature, particualrly as I prefer to use Linux and no driver is available yet.

Good value, with a nicely thought-out easy to use feature set.
16 Top Notch SOHO Photo Printer
Excellent Photo Printer. Very clear and a ton better than my old Epson C82. I use a Kodak 6490 Digital camera and it produces great pics, especially on the Cannon Photo Pro paper. I haven't tried my old Epson paper as of yet. It is nice to have the option of not having to boot up my PC to review and print my pictures as well. I can use either the card reader or the USB port, SD card slot is easier. Nice to see store quality prints right out of your printer. Very quick and quiet! My old Epson created gloss and non-gloss areas on the photos, these are full gloss with color correct images. If you are going to do more text printing you might want to go with the IP4000 as it has a black pigmented base color for sharper text printing. I did print off some docs though and they looked just fine on this printer. I did a good deal of research and it would have been either the 4000 or 6000, for the "best bang for the buck". I purchased my IP6000D at Best Buy for 125.00 (box was open) normally 179.99 the IP4000 was 119.99 normaly 149.99.
17 Awesome printer
I use this printer to print both black & white as well as color photos. It is the finest photo printer that I have used to date. Photos from my Nikon D70 as well as restored antique photos look great when printed from the Canon iP6000D. Couldn't be happier!
18 False Info on the Web and From Canon
I LOVE Canon printers and feel that they are the best ink jet printers made for many, many reasons. I have owned all brands, and, truthfully, Canons slipped badly for several years, but in the past year they have zoomed again into the lead. The ip6000D is no exception to the quality build and quality results that Canon printers produce. The problem is that I was needing a CD/DVD printer and all the web info, as well as Canon's own publicity for this printer, their pdf file on this printer, and many sites selling this printer all indicate that it does print CDs/DVDs. Thus, I ordered it from Amazon, my favorite web purchase store. When it arrived, I noticed it had no CD tray and there was nothing in the book about printing CDs or DVDs. I called Canon and they said they were not aware of the printer and would do some research. About 5 minutes later the guy came back and said that the printer WITH THE EXACT SAME NAME had CD printing support in ALL countries except the U.S. I told him that having the same name and number system was absurd with different features. He blew me off. So beware, if you want to print CDs or DVDs, this is NOT the printer to get. But for everything else it is the best choice for home or office and especially for photo printing. With Canon printers, you get amazing quality, cheap refills, no clogging, no chips in the refills, and no paper jams. Without the problem I have cited and all my hours on this issue, it would get 5-stars from me as all recent Canons have. The Epsons and HPs are in a second level and the Lexmarks are at the bottom. I have to go with the Epson Stylus R200 for my CD printing, despite the fact that I did not want to go back to Epson. Amazon, as ususal, accepted my return without hesitation and remain THE kick ass company to do business with.
19 excellent Printer
Got this printer today, setup was very easy, started printing 4x6 prints on canon pro paper, prints were lab quality, excellent. I,am very pleased with the canon printer. Purchase and receiving the printer was very fast. Did not print larger than 4x6 at this time, but by the quality of the print, I,am sure they will be very good. Ordering from Amazon was excellent.
20 Great results..very poor LCD screen
I just bought this printer. The photo finishing results are excellent if printed on Canon paper. I would have bought the PIXMA 4000 if I could have pre-viewed the very poor LCD quality on the printer.
21 Well worth the money
I had an Epson 785EPX photo printer and when it worked, the prints were beautiful. However, my printer heads were constantly clogging and I wasted tons of ink cleaning the heads all the time. The ink is not cheap. So, I started researching for a new photo printer. I chose the Canon line because they have a reputation for cheaper ink. I found this to be true when I purchased the Canon i250 to replace another Epson ink hog (the 640) for my general printing. (I keep one printer for general printing, one for photos) The Canon ink cartridges ARE cheaper and last longer. After reading reviews on photo printers I decided between the Canon ip4000 and the ip6000d. The ip4000 got amazing reviews both from consumers and magazines. There weren't a lot of reviews on the ip6000d I suppose because it's newer. I decided to risk buying the ip6000d anyways because I really wanted the media input slot for convenience. I'm here to say the photos are AMAZING and of photo lab quality. I tested using the included Canon Photo Paper Pro and also my leftover Epson Premium Photo Glossy Paper. Both papers produced the same results. The printer unpacked and installed easily. For printing without the computer, the menu/LCD screen on the printer is intuitive and easy to use. For printing through the computer, the software program 'Easy Photo-Print' stands by it's name. A couple of mouse clicks and the perfect print came out. If it matters, my digital camera is a Kodak DX6490. There are two things to watch for while setting up your ip6000d for the first time. Both have to do with loading paper into the cassette tray. Make sure you load the paper PRINT SIDE DOWN and watch out for the little plastic thingy that holds the paper in place. Mine broke off and the spring flew off who knows where. It still works but just moves around easily. Since I just got the printer today I can't comment on long term use or ink usage for sure. I've printed about 10 4X6's so far and 3 of the 6 tanks show a very slim line for usage.
