1 Great Quality but wastes a ton of Ink
I have had this little baby for over 1 year now and have no complaints what so ever about the print quality.
For a little printer, the quality is stunning.
I also bought the battery pack so printing on the go from a laptop is simple. The battery pack has provided more than enough life, lasting more than my laptop's battery.
The one complaint: very poor Mac OS X software. I mean very poor. Mac users aren't used to being asked to confirm dumb questions multiple times like PC users are.
For example, there are 2 menu options to access settings regarding the ink levels and neither of them are clear.
If you choose: Ink Level Information why should you have to click 'update?' Shouldn't the software update the information before displaying it? This is like one of those annoying PC Wizards that ask you the same question multiple times.
The other choice regarding ink is "Remaining ink level setting'
Unfortunately you have to reset the ink level settings manually...a major annoyance and inconvenience. This is done by clicking the obvious Ink Counter Rest Button in the Remaining ink level setting screen. But why is there a Remaining Ink Level Indicator Setting button? There is another menu option that displays the current ink level so what's this for? Whatever it does, it sends some message to the printer. Maybe an ink level setting reset? If so, then shouldn't the other button have done it already? Are you getting confused? see what I mean!?
Who knows. It is just stupid and confusing.
The ink level indicators are almost never right anyway, so be prepared to have to change ink cartriges in a trial and error fashion when your print quality doesn't seem right.
As a matter of fact, when there is something wrong with your print quality, don't expect the Print Utility to be much help at all.
For example, When you choose "Cleaning" there is a button that says -Cleaning: Starts print head cleaning.' What do you think will happen when you click this?
Nope. It gives you an option with check boxes: All Colors, Black, or Color. then an 'OK' button. So you have chosen the colors you want to clean and click 'ok' so what do you think will happen now?
Instead of the printer beginning to clean the heads, you are given an alert box that Asks "Clean the Print Head?" and you have to click 'OK' again.
Geeez..... talk about annoying! Just clean the damn heads already!!!! The softweare doesn't seem to know it was written for Mac OS X and not Windows.
It's a shame the software is soooo bad, because this is otherwise a really great printer.
If you get this printer, you will love the photos, but be prepared to spend a lot of $$ on ink and get a little frustrated when you need to use the utility.
2 Great little printer
I've had this printer for 9 months and its been great. 2 complaints: it runs out of ink quickly and the ink for this printer is expensive; 2) there is no paper catch.
3 Small Printer-Big Success
I needed a small portable printer for my laptop, and after researching them, I chose the Canon i70. It has all of the attributes I needed-lightweight,super easy to use, fast as the office rumor mill, and a great print job. I highly recommend this product to anyone fortunate enough to have purchased it.
4 One of the Best Purchases I have Made
I don't usually write reviews, but have to for this. It prints black text fast as anything. I do a lot of heavy printing and am still on both of my cartridges since I purchased it about a month ago. The one thing that I was worried about was printing pictures. I use glossy photo paper for pictures and they turn out great. It is small, portable and as good as a full size printer. I have recommended this printer to everyone. It is more than I could have asked for in a printer this size.
5 This Printer is Fantastic!
This TINY printer is amazing. Its whisper quiet, fast, and prints with exceptional quality (both photos and documents in color and B/W). I have no complaints whatsoever. Also, you can start printing virtually immediately after taking it out of the box - easy with USB cable. I highly recommend this printer to anyone.
6 herbyjoy
This printer is the best thing that happened to me in a long time.
It is fast, prints great, and is very small and light.
I travel a lot and always have my notebook computer with me. Their have been many times that I wished that I could print something in the hotel room. Now I can.
The i70 fits in the same case as my compaq notebook and now goes with me everywhere.
Another thing is the cost of the ink is great. I found a web site that seels compatable ink for this printer at a great price. ....
Their was a ... rebate on this at the time I bought it, but I would have bought it without the rebate.
I have a HP Laser and a HP photo 7960 and this printer keeps up with both of them. The photos are not as good as the HP 7960 but this is not a stand alone photo printer.
You get what you pay for and this little printer will not disappoint you.
7 A no-brainer to use with the camera
I'm lazy. I did not feel like installing the driver on my laptop. So, I plugged the Canon ELPH camera directly into the printer, picked a photo, and printed it. Easy Peasy. I don't know how professionals feel about the print quality of this printer, but it is perfectly adequate for small family type snapshots. It is the size of a hardback book, which is very nice if you don't have a lot of room in the house for yet another gizmo.
My only peeves are these: I had trouble figuring out how to put the print head in. The documentation is just a tad unclear. The other peeve is that the printing is very slow. It takes a while for the image to go from the camera into the printer's memory. I almost power cycled it, thinking I'd done something wrong or needed to hook it up to a computer to install a driver on the printer. However, when I got back to it after taking a break, it had printed out a nice little photo. It'd be nice if there was some kind of feedback indicating progress.
8 VERY HANDY, LOOKS NIFTY, AND PRINTS FAST!
THE GOOD:
(1) This is the lightest printer among peers. HP's 450cbi, the closest alternative in my book, is nowhere near as portable as the i70.
(2) Prints directly from a digicam. I use Canon's G3, and I can now share photo print-outs straight from my camera. No need to lug my laptop around.
(3) The battery life is great, don't believe detractors. IN general you don't need the battery -- that is only for outings, for those occasions when you just have to print out something while sitting by the lake.
(4) It is FAST! Especially for color prints, it outpaces my full-blown HP laserjet.
(5) It is QUIET. You'll have to get used to its noiseless printing. First time round, I had to check to make sure the paper was printed on.
(6) Is a breeze to INSTALL. Something you can expect from Canon, of course.
(7) Works with both Windows and Macs.
CAVEATS:
(1) The photo quality may not appeal to shutterbugs, especially if NOT printed on photo paper, but for general office workers with little desk space or for folks with a packed travel roster, the i70 is a pretty safe bet.
(2) The ink costs may sky rocket quite quickly if you print colored stuff often. If, like me, your general printing is B&W, then this is a great buy.
(3) The price, especially if you buy the battery pack. But there are deals if you know where to look.
SUMMARY:
A great overall printer, definitely if you need to carry one around. I purchase Epson's photo paper (not Canon's own) for color shots and the i70 prints more than adequately. The speed, the quality and the quietness make it one of my top printer recommendations -- all things said, even better than a regular inkjet.
9 Forget the feature list. This printer really IS portable.
My husband was going to a two-week writer's workshop, and needed a printer to bring along. We bought a Canon i70 bubble jet printer, even though it cost considerably more than most low-end printers. We haven't regretted the purchase for a moment.
The printer has two strong marks in its favor:
* It weighs only 7 pounds. It's also about the size of a hardback novel, and slid right into his iBook-and-computer backpack. (Other people had to ship a box, complete with styrofoam and packing tape.)
* The ink cartridges cost $11 each. (Amazon's likely to cut the dollar amount, so I'll also point out this costs less than two fast-food dinners.)
At the relatively low ink price, we assumed that the printer would go through ink faster than I can eat a box of Lindt chocolate truffles. So we made sure to get a second cartridge before he left. To his surprise, a single ink cartridge lasted the entire two weeks -- even though he went through an entire ream of paper. (Not single-spaced with lots of fonts, and no color to speak of, but that's still pretty impressive.)
Note, however, that the i70 doesn't hold a lot of sheets at a time. That wasn't a criteria for the traveling printer (and we have a color laser at home, so it doesn't get much use off-the-road), but it might matter to you.
To be honest, we haven't done any real color printing on it yet, other than to test that it worked. So I can't speak to that. However, it's certainly fast.
Bottom line: if you need a truly portable printer, I don't think you'll do better than this. While plenty of other inkjets are light enough that, yeah, if you had to bring it along you COULD, the Canon i70 is easy enough to grab and stuff in your luggage. You'll take it along without a second thought.
10 Common Sense
People, don't rate this a bad product, or Amazon.com poorly for not selling a USB cable. The reviewer from Hawaii gave Amazon and the printer poor reviews because it didn't come with a "specialized cable" as he put it. First of all, it's not "specialized", it's a standard A-B USB cable. Second, if you have ever owned a computer, you'll know that printers rarely come with the parallel or USB cable. It's just the way they are sold. In the future, check your knowledge first before bad mouthing a company. That's just my two cents.
11 Poor Customer Service
Try calling amazon for service on something you bought...good luck...this item doesn't come with a cord to connect to your computer, and it needs a special one that amazon doesn't offer. I'm rating amazon more than the product, since I can't even get the product to work...poor customer service and product control...I'd advise to buy this product somewhere else that at least supplies you with a cord to get started...or at least offers one!!!!
12 Great Little Printer!
The UPS shipping was on target for the 1 day shipping service, and was well worth the extra money. I felt like a kid opening up the UPS box, then the printer box. Then after carefully installing the printer (I already had a USB cord) and software per Canon's instructions, I gave that little toy a test and man was I impressed! I've been using an old BCJ-250 for about 5 years now and didn't realize what an updated printer can do. I know I may have to refill my ink cartridges a bit more often but I mainly use my printer for online reciepts, news letters and emails so I should be fine. I'm not a professional photographer but was very happy with the photo results I got out of the printer. Not bad for not being listed as a "Photo Printer" I think. I know, everyone's different, but I would highly recomend this printer. Especially to people who don't like clutter like me. That design is awsome and ironically matches my desktop computer, and scanner in color.
13 very nice...
well....it's a VERY nice printer.... good quality! especially if i was to compare it to my $20 Lexmark inkjet.... it's fast and quiet. I guess the only complaint i have about this printer is that i'm already out of the black ink, and i only had it for about 3 weeks... i dont think i've done that much with it.... so that's the only bad thing! oh, and if you connect via the infrared, u dont get to see the status of the ink.... so it pretty much took me by surprise when the ink ran out.......
14 quiet and fast
I just got this printer today and so far am very happy with it. Luckily, I had a spare USB cable (it comes without one!) Setup was easy and worked just as described in the manual (win xp). The print software Easy print is truely easy to use and works really well. In less than 30 minutes I had installed the printer, and 5 nice and crips photos printed (the printer comes with a trial package of 4x6 glossy paper). The most amazing feature is how quiet and fast it prints. My old Epson printer took forever to print anything and while it was printing my whole sturdy desk shook with the motion and noise. The i70 couldn't be a starker contrast to that. Be aware that you can load only 10 sheets at a time (less for photo paper and envelops).
15 Doesn't include a connection cable
I bought this printer based off the reviews here and the magazines reviews that I read this would be a great buy. Upon purchasing this I was amazed that printer didn't included a cable to connect to the computer or any of the hardware that they talk about being able to connect. So I had to go out and purchase my own USB cable just to finish install this piece of hardware to my computer. After that this thing worked like a champ! No major complaints. So if you are seriously intrested in purchasing this you should consider purchasing a USB cable to connect to this to your computer.
16 Simply Amazing
I have a 12" G4 PowerBook and wanted a portable printer for the cabin and other remote locations. Saw the i70 at the Apple Store and knew I had to have it. Tried it out this weekend and am VERY impressed with it's speed and quality of print. Also amazed at the minimal size and weight...about the size of a hardcover book. All in all, it seems like the PERFECT portable printer for a laptop owner.
17 Best all around printer in it's class
I do alot of on site photography and this will now allow me to print right on sight. The quality of the prints is very acceptable, it's especially nice to be able to print borderless prints. This printer should be more than acceptable for anyone wanting to document their family growing up and send the pictures to Grandma and Grandpa. I have been a professional photographer for almost 30 years and this is one of my favorite tools.
18 AMAZING LITTLE PRINTER
I was in the market for a portable printer to use with my Fujitsu Lifebook. The portable markey is pretty small, being that there are only a very few printers that are small enough to be called portable, but still print on full-size paper.
At first I didn't like anything available. I checked in depth but nothing out there really caught my eye. One day I strolled on over to Canon's website and what did I see, but the i70 listed as "Coming Soon!"
I decided to hold off on buying a printer until I could see the i70 in person, which I later did. It's beautiful. It's sort of a platinum silver color, with a rich blue printhead cover. It closes easily and a small magnet keeps the bottom sheet-feeder attached to the top cover (it's way cooler than I'm describing it...)
Installation was a snap. Typical of Canon. I'm running Windows XP and I have no problems in the slightest.
The first thing I noticed is that it's quiet. I didn't think it was really printing until I saw the paper coming out.
Second: it's FAST. It's the fastest inkjet printer I've ever used, beating out my HP 1120C in both speed, noise, and print quality.
It's not labled as a photo printer, but the print quality of the i70 is just amazing. If there's a difference between this and real photo printers, I haven't seen it, nor do I care. It's good. VERY good.
I have not tested the infrared communications yet... I send everything to the printer via USB, which is a breeze.
To sum it up:
Pros:
Appearence
Speed
Noise
Quality
Cons:
Not the same silver as other Canon products (such as the LiDe30) but it's still so pretty...
I HIGHLY recommend this printer.
19 VERY PORTABLE - INK RUNS DRY FASSSSSSSSTTTTTTTT
I am a real estate agent and use this printer to print out contracts from my laptap. It fits in the front flap of my carrying case, hence negating the need for another bag. Slick, prints fast and easy to set up.
Here are some cons:
- Infrared sometimes does not "connect" as fast
- Ink dries up FAST!! Granted my contracts are lengthy, but I can't get thru one complete contract (about 25 pages) without it drying up on me.
Besides the two complaints listed above, it is great.
20 Remarkable little printer
I just bought this yesterday, so this is just my initial impressions.... I saw it in the store beside the HP 450. The i70 was about half the size of the 450. The Cannon rep was there and I asked for both a photo and text to be printed. The results were pretty awesome for such a tiny printer. This is just the perfect printer for a laptop.
But the only connections are via USB or infra-red. No parallel port! (That official Amazon.com review is wrong about this.) It comes with AC adaptor.... Also no USB cable. So it winds up being pricey. But it's worth it. It's also very good looking... not like that older model (Cannon 85?) which was an ugly black box.
The infra-red port is on the right side. My laptop's infra-red port is also on the right. Since I didn't want a backwards printer, I went with the USB connect. Installation was very easy. They give you a large, but one-page step-by-step guide. I was printing in about 15 minutes.
It has one tub for color ink and a second tub for black ink. So if you print a lot of text, you won't use up that expensive color ink.
I hope that this printer can last as long as an HP printer. If it can, Cannon has HP beat.
