1 Lemon?
I have bought my canon printer i900D three months ago
I was not able to print not even one page
Canon customer service concluded that it was a defective printer head
They send me one
I installed it and again, Nothing
I finally gave up on it
I am in the Bahamas and to send it back thru customs etc is nearly impossible and very costly
Now I am just discussing my experience with friends and Amazon potential buyers
Hopefully they will avoid trying Canon Printers for their own shake unless thsi model is a lemon alltogether as Canon's clerk said that he is experiencing a lot of calls about this i900d
2 Excellent printer... ink is a pain though...
The Canon i900D is an outstanding photo printer. I purchased this printer some months ago after comparing printers for awhile.
This printer shares a shell with the i8xx and i9xx series of printers. The features vary, but this printer has the ability to do both direct printing from your digital camera and memory cards as well as from your computer. The setup and software are super easy to install and use and you'll be up and printing your first pictures in minutes.
And the prints! Photos printed on this printer are outstandingly crisp, with beautiful color. Quality photo paper produces prints that are indistinguishable from "real" photos. Printing is fast and the provided software lets you organize prints on any size paper easily and efficiently. Way to go Canon!
There are some downsides to this printer. The add-on drawer for photo-sized paper (like 5x7) is very cheesy and gets stuck easily. It doesn't work all that well for me either, although I rarely use it. And then there is ink...
This printer uses six tiny separate cartridges. No store locally stocks all six, so stock up on cartridges. The Canon cartridges are expensive (eleven bucks each...a bit cheaper on Amazon) and run out at different rates. The software will warn you when a tank is running low. On my printer this happens just before it runs out altogether. So keep the cartridges handy. (One nice touch with the ink tanks is that they are clear so you can actually see the ink level: no more wasted ink because the printer thinks the cartridge might be empty!!)
Otherwise, I'm very happy with this printer and recommend it highly.
3 Excellent Printer Excellent Service
I purchased the i900D through Amazon. In terms of printing, it was flawless. Very pleased with the photos, speed, dB, software, the whole nine yards! However after about a week the LCD screen on the printer developed a solid black line down the middle of it. I contacted Canon Support and within 72 hours another i900D was delivered to my home. In addition they provided all the necessary pre-paid labels to return the defective one. All I needed to do was to call the carrier for home pickup. It could not have been easier.
So when considering any electronic purchase, think about the quality of service that supports the product. Today that is becoming more and more an issue. In this case, at least, Canon came through 100%
4 Professional quality photo prints!!
I did tons of research on highest rated photo printers and agree that this printer is on par with professional photo lab prints. I chose this one over the HP 7960 because of the warmth and richness of photos and individual ink tanks (a money saver). Also, there were other reviewers selecting the Canon over the HP. This printer was also recommended as a "quick pick" by Consumer Reports magazine. I look forward to going from the Canon Photo Paper Pro to the Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy for even prettier pictures (so I am told by lab techs who claim high gloss produces best results). I am extremely pleased now, and can't wait to try out an even better photo paper by Canon on this printer. Such a deal!!
5 Awesome Printer for a Great Price
I purchased the i900D a couple weeks ago and I am amazed at how nice the pictures are that come out of this printer. I purchased the i900D and the Canon A80 digital camera at the same time and they are a perfect pair. I own a midlevel Canon film camera that has produced excellent pictures for years so I really wanted to see how the A80 compaired to that. I went around the house and the neighborhood and took pictures with both my film camera and my A80. I printed off all the pictures from the A80 on the i900D and then took the film to be developed. I also took my compact flash card with me to the developer and got some prints with one of those kodak do it yourself printing stations. I asked family and friends which pictures were which and nobody could tell the difference!!! My only regret is that I didnt buy the i900D and the A80 sooner!!
6 Outstanding Product!!
I have used my new Cannon i960 for 60 days and I am very happy with the product. I have printed over 75 4X6 and 12 8X10 prints and have been completely satisfied with the product when using Cannon glossy paper. When I have used paper from a competitor there is a marked difference. When I show my prints to my friends they cannot believe that the pictures came from a printer. Photo lab quality.
7 Excellent printer (and it prints 5x7 borderless!)
I purchased the Canon i900D yesterday and I could not be more pleased. Prior to purchasing the Canon, I was torn between the i900D and the HP Photosmart 7960. One of my deal-breaker requirements was that the printer MUST be capable of printing 5x7 photos borderless on 5x7 photo paper. From my internet research I was unable to determine if either the i900D or the 7960 could do so.At Best Buy yesterday it so happened that an HP sales rep was there to answer questions about their printers. I had one question for the woman: Can I print a 5x7 borderless on 5x7 photo paper? After the HP rep wasted 45 minutes playing with the 7960 trying to determine if and how to do so, she finally concluded that you cannot. You have to print on a 8x10 sheet (centered nonetheless) and crop the whole thing. Plus, I was amazed on how little this HP rep knew about her own product.
I then went to the i900D. The Best Buy clerk had a photo printed borderless on 5x7 paper in less than a minute. Piece of cake. Bottom line, the Canon allows for quick and easy borderless printing on any standard photo size - no centering/cropping needed. Simply tell the printer or its printing software which size you want and it automatically does it. At home last night, I was interchanging between 4x6, 5x7 and 8x10 prints with ease.
i900D photo print quality is excellent from my 5.1 megapix camera (have not tried older 3.1 pictures). The b&w and sepia prints were nothing short of amazing. I found it close to impossible to tell that they were not professional photos. The install was a breeze. I was printing directly from my Sony Memory Stick Duo (if you have a duo card, make sure you have an adapter) even while the driver/software install was going on. The Easy Print software that came with it is excellent for simply printing your photos. Both the software and on-printer "software" are so user-friendly that a monkey could figure out how to print photos in the size wanted.
This previous HP user has been converted.
8 Proof you don't have to spend a lot of $$ ...
This printer is by far the least amount of money I've ever spent on a printer ... and it's absolutely the best printer I've ever owned! Canon makes the best digital cameras and now, I'm convinced, they make the best printers too. I own an Epson Photo printer and an HP photo printer/scannner/copier. I spent over $300 for each of those and the prints are much better on this Canon than either of those 2 printers. I have a lot of experience on both the HP and Epson printers and I will point out why (...)this is far superior than anything anyone else puts out in this price range or even much higher.** The ink system in this printer is fantastic! Anyone who has an Epson printer knows that the ink cartridges have a plastic coating over the hole where the ink comes out and when the printer "charges" the ink, it has to kinda drill a hole through it to get the ink to come out. Many times with those cartridges, it takes 2 or 3 times for it to get it right and print correctly. And Epsons drink ink a whole lot faster than this printer does. The HP ink system is just a joke when photo printing with the tri-colored cartridges. (...) With the Canon ink system, you just break off the bottom plug and insert it into the print head. That's it! No ink charging, no print alignment (except for the first time you use the printer and put all the ink cartridges in), nothing. Just close the cover and start printing. They also last much longer than the Epson inks.
** The printer driver is very user friendly. I have my Epson 960 well over a year and still find it very diffucult to get a good print because of all the confusing menus and options in the driver. With the Canon, there's a "print advisor" that kinda walks you through the process of printing a photo without confusing menus. It also has many extra options for printing such as an Image Optimizer and Vivid Color, to name a few. Much better driver in the Canon than in the HP or Epson.
** Print quality ... amazing! I wrote a review about my Epson 960 when I got it about how great the pictures were (when I got it to print right) and I never thought it could get better. Well I printed out a few images from the same CF card and the Canon images came out even better. More contrast, richer colors, and much less "noise" even on lesser quality images. I even printed out 5 of these images on one of those new Kodak kiosks they have at a lot of retail chains now. Not really a fair comparison considering the paper and dye based ink they use but I have to honestly say, the Canon images were absolutely identical to the ones I printed on the kiosk.
Some other nice things about this printer are:
* The built in card reader is a lot faster than the card reader on my computer or my HP all in one.
* It's whisper quiet printing and to even further that, there is an option in the printer driver for "quiet mode" printing which I haven't tried yet, but would almost have to be silent to get any quieter.
* The print speed is slower than the comparable i960 because it has about half the nozzles (about 1500 compared to the roughly 3000 on the i960), but that can be a good thing. Cheaper photo paper absorbs ink slower than better photo paper so if you're using cheaper paper on a faster printer, you run the risk of blotching if the ink isn't absorbed faster than the paper is going through the printer feeder. This just leaves more options open with this printer than a faster one.
All in all I have to say that overall, this is one of the best purchases I've made in a long time. (...). And when (...) Bottom line ... buying this printer is a no-brainer. (...) Even though the ink that is used in that printer is supposed to preserve the photos colors much longer, if you do as I do and save all my images on to CD's, even if the picture does fade after 20 years you can just print another one.
You just can't go wrong with this printer!
9 Really nice photo printer
This is my first photo printer and I couldn't be happier. The clarity and quality of the pictures is great. Just make sure you only use Canon photo paper with this printer. I originally used kodak premium photo paper and the quality of the photo prints was awful.
10 Terrific Printer
I got rid of my Epson 820 photo printer. You had to clean it about every 3 days, using up great supplies of ink. It was extremely noisy and very slow, for color prints. After much research, settled on the Canon. It is terrific. The quietest printer I have ever heard, with very good speed, and the colors are excellent, even using my old Epson glossy photo paper. My Epson was hooked up parallel, but the canon only has a USB hook-up. I had to do some rearranging as my laptop only has two USB ports, but that is no problem. The only frustrating thing is that I ordered this about 2 hours before Canon put a rebate on, of $40. I called Canon but they would not honor it, even though I missed it by only 2 hours. If I were buying this in a store, the salesman might have warned me to wait a day, for the rebate. The internet can be very impersonal.
11 The Best Printer Ever!
I recently bought this i900D printer based on a recommendation my brother and cousin gave me and a few of them I read here on Amazon. I must say, they were all right! One of the very first pictures I printed was a picture of my boyfriend and I standing in front of a beautiful sunset in CA, and my goodness it was one of THE BEST shots I have ever seen and the use of the Canon Photo Pro paper makes it even better! The colors are just so vibrant. And I love the easy-print software package that it comes with, it makes for a quick print of your photos. And the best part is you can set the pictures to print in 'vivid photo' and 'noise reduction' as it will bring out the blue skies brilliantly, and if there is a shadow on the people it will lighten it up! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this printer!
12 Unbelievable Prints
All I have to say is get this printer! Talk about crystal clear and
crisp, I don't even think a 35mm could produce a photo as
good as this and it was taken with a 1.3mp Olympus D-400 camera. The printer was a breeze to set up. Easy controls on
the top on the printer to zoom in pictures, crop, cut, and do
what you need to do with the picture before printing it.
You can directly print from your camera, the computer
or you can just put your card into one of the Memory Slots on top of
the printer. It accepts CompactFlash, Microdrive, SmartMedia,
Memory Stick, Sd card, Multimedia Card. Yes, all of those
cards are compatible with this printer.
One feature I found that was kind of cool, only because I had
no more USB slots free once the printer was plugged in, was
the fact that I could read & write to the media card as if it
were a drive on the computer (just as it was when I had the
multiple card reader plugged in). (make sure you have the
Memory Card Utility installed and when you want to be able to
read & write just click the icon for it and following the
simple directions.) Now I don't even have to worry about not
having an extra USB slot for my other card reader...I can
just use the printer.
If you think the LCD screen is too dark, just adjust the
contrast by pressing MENU - Maintenance - Contrast and adjust
it. Very simple. I brightened it up a tiny bit.
My other printer was an Epson Stylus 800 ... total garbage compared to this.
I've had various HP printers and nothing has compared for the great price.
I highly recommend this printer for everyone. Good job Canon!
I think my next toy will be a 5mp Canon digital camera. Time
to retire the 1.3mp even though I've never had a problem
with it, I just want movie options with it as well.
13 Phenomenal photo / regular color printer from Canon!
The Canon i900D is a remarkable color photo printer. Since receiving it, I have had no issues with the setup, instructions, print head or ink cartridges. I'm VERY impressed by this machine and strongly recommend it to anyone who wants professional quality print jobs from a medium- to higher-end color inkjet photo printer. The six (6) individual color cartridges (included) are fantastic. I love the fact there are multiple cartridges. Instead of running out of yellow -- and having to replace an uber cartridge (which may have semi-full reserves of red and blue), I simply replace the yellow cartridge. No wasted ink cartridges. Canon offers quality, professional-grade ink, too. And the price has been reasonable when compared against other print manufacturers and their wares.
Despite large print runs, I haven't drained them quickly, like the prior HP color photo printer I owned (which also had individual cartridges), even with the same print output settings. And whether using Canon's Pro paper ($$$$) or plain white paper, I'm very impressed with the results.
I would offer this advise to Canon in the design of their future printers, though: 1.) Better paper tray capacity; 2.) memory card slot(s) on the front, akin to HP's design; 3.) networking capabilities; 4.) Linux print drivers/software; and 5.) include a USB connection cable, please!
I wanted the paper tray to hold more paper. As this is a photo printer, and not an office printer, I can understand the limited space.
While there aren't any memory card slots on the printer, there is a USB 2.0 A port on the front side, which my Kodak digital camera base connects to. (There is also a USB 2.0 B port on the printer's backside which can be used, depending on how you're connecting from the printer to your computer.) And I can use both the digital camera's LCD and the printer's LCD to preview/select the picture I want to print without downloading to the computer first. (If you prefer to run large print jobs, I would recommend downloading to the computer first and printing from there.) I would like to see Canon adopt memory card slots for the front of the machine, akin to what HP has been offering. I'd prefer to pull the memory card from my digital camera, insert into the printer and print that way.
I wish Canon (and other companies) would consider networking solutions within their printers. Yes, one computer on the network can serve as a print server (and if necessary, the USB cable can be simply moved from one machine to the other). I'd like to see either USB-based networking enabled, or wireless networking added to the next generation, though.
Linux drivers and software: Bring 'em on! 'Nuff said.
14 Great Printer
First print out of the box was great and it printed in less than a minute. I as skeptical after reading some of the reviews about yellowing and slow printing, but I have not been more pleased. The photos look almost as good as the ones you get from a photo developing lab. I am not sorry I bought this printer. Be sure to buy a USB cable as one is not included.
15 Greatest Printer Yet
I just upgraded from an HP 970 Cxi and couldn't be happier. My i900D makes top quality prints on Canon Glossy Photo Pro and Ilford Classic Glossy papers - better than the digital film processors I used. And, its ink is much cheaper than the HP's. And, it has a built in card reader that can be used by the PC and to print picures. And, it includes an LCD for printer status and picture preview (so so quality for picures). And it integrates very well with the great bundled software. And it includes a dedicated 4x6 feeder. And there was a...rebate when I bought it with my Canon S400.The fact that it is slower than the i960 is actually a benefit. The i960's high speed causes some ink pooling on glossy papers like Ilford Classic Glossy - the i900D actually winds up with betters pics because its slower speed prevents pooling (based on what I have seen.)
Overall I've found excellent quality and all the features I could have wanted in a printer at a great price.
16 It works
Having had horrendous paper jamming problems with HP 7760 and the Epson 325. We find the Canon i900D to be the answer. The machine works smoothly and flawlessly. The prints are excellent, and there have been no paperjams...The Canon is better in qualtiy overall.
17 Not so thrilled....
It seems like most people are happy with this printer but I am less then thrilled. I bought it because I love my Canon digital camera and they had a rebate if I bought this printer. After setting it up, I printed my first photo and the picture seemed fuzzy, it also had an excess amount of pink tone to it. I printed a few more and each time I got the same result. i called Canon customer service, which was EXCELLENT, but the tech could not make it work to my satisfaction so I returned it.
I decided to try again becaue I really wanted the $100 Canon rebate. I went to Best Buy with my compact flash card and printed a test print from my CF.....same thing fuzzy and this time too much yellow. I tried the HP 7960......LOVED IT....looked much more realistic BUT it's quite a bit more in price and no rebate.
I decided to buy the HP 7760 and so far I love it!!!! Great prints for the price!
18 Great Printer!!
If you thinking to buy a printer capable of printing colorful photos, this is the one. Remember, this is not only a photo printer, it also prints plain paper. The photos I printed are impressive, you may compare the photos with any commercially developed photo.
I also own a HP1220C Professional Series and the outcome of the Canon it's superb, the only thing is that the 1220 support tabloid format 14 X 17 inches.
Another thing I like from the Cannon is that when you print from the web it puts everything in a single sheet so you are not wasting more paper for just couple of lines. It's pretty neat.
It's a best buy.
19 Excellent Results & Easy to Use
I did quite a bit of research before buying this product, including reading all of the user reviews on Amazon, and can only say that I am delighted with the results. It is incredibly easy to set up and I was printing high quality pics within 5 minutes. All of the features advertised work precisely as described. It will not disappoint at all.
20 Better than Shutterfly.com
I am so impressed with this printer! The quality of the pictures rivals that of a regular camera and I can print them instantly! The software was easy to install and I was able to print in minutes. After printing a few pictures, I compared some of the prints to those I had printed by Shutterfly.com and found that the Canon colors were more true-to-life. Some of the Shutterfly pictures had a green tint but the same Canon prints were much better. There are two downfalls so far. 1)It has been difficult to find Canon photo paper in the stores (I went to Office Max, Staples (a very small selection), and Walmart). 2)The ink refills do not list the Cannon i900D on their boxes and the folks at the office stores could not tell me which refills to use. But, according to Canon (customer service answered very quickly), the printer is so new that i900D is not in the current literature. However, I have printed almost 100 pictures and the ink is still going strong. I think that at $222, this printer is a steal! I am extremely happy with it and am recommending it to everyone!
21 Unbelievable Results
After much research and reading all the recommendations on this site for both this printer and the HP 7960 I chose the Canon mostly because of the seperate ink cartridges and fear of jams on the HP's. I am already an owner of a multifunction HP that has always given me problems and most frustrating of all the color printing has NEVER been good. The colors were never true and looked completely cartoonish. I have heard many good things about the HP photoprinters but really dont want to take any more chances. I bought the Canon yesterday morning and hooked it up to my pc and with the very first print was amazed at how great the quality is. It was super simple to hook up and use and produces such vibrant prints that I cant tell the difference between a photo that was chemically processed and the ones that are printer produced. It is true borderless printing and the Canon paper is like regular photo paper without the perforated edge one has to tear off. What a great product, and it does exactly what it claims to do: produce great photos of good quality quickly. Be aware that you will need to purchase a USB cable to hook up the printer to the pc in order to print from your pc, and it only comes with 5 pieces of 4 x 6 paper. You will definitely want to purchase more paper, because once you start to print out your beautiful pictures you wont be able to stop. I Highly recommend this printer because of the quality and ease of use. This is my first Canon product and will from now on be a loyal customer.
22 i900D Priter
Quality is excellent, some of the best photos I have seen from an inkjet printer. The enclosed software does the job but is not intuitive in use. There are 2 basic printing programs that could have been combined into one program. The direct print from a memory card takes quite a bit to get used to. It is a difficult series of menus to go through that will perhaps become easier to use with practice.
I like the ability to change individual color cartridges when one runs out wihout having to change the print head.
It seems to handle various types and weights of paper without problems but the 4x6 feeder is somewhat clunky to use and seems to jam occasionally.
When printing edge to edge on 4X6 it is not true edge to edge as it leaves a margin that necessitates the use of a tear off tab.
One major problem is that Canon's listing says that it supports the XD card in the specifications, I found out the hard way through Canon's technical support that it requires an adapter card from XD to Compact flash that costs about $60.00. In some of the specifications, the need for an adapter was NOT listed and in others it was cleverly worded so that it seemed ambiguious.
23 Canon out colors HP
Can't decide between this machine and the HP 7960? I've tried them both and this is the winner. The print quality is much warmer, HP felt a little sterile. The Canon machine feels more substantial, the HP felt cheap and skidded across the desk. On the downside, the LCD on the Canon isn't very clear and the set up takes a little longer. Overall, Canon is the winner, add a $... in your pocket and quicker printing, and the answers easy.
24 Great Prints!!!!
After much research on the web I chose this printer based on previous history of canon printers. When I received this printer I printed a 4X6 in less then 10 minutes out of the box. To my delight I was extremely impressed by the print. I printed some more pictures and was so impressed I had to take them to work. At work my friends were very impressed also. Some of these friends are plastic surgeons who are involved in digital and 35MM photography so to impress them tells a lot about this printer. I should of been a rep for Canon because I conviced many people to buy this printer. I compared these prints to others,no comparision. The Canon prints where much better and where as good as 35MM prints. As for cost of the prints the paper was 15 cents and the ink I don't know yet. But you can buy generic ink as low as 1.50 for each ink tank. So I would est. the cost of a print to be less than 20 cents. I would recommend this Printer without hesitation. Jan, 4, 2004. I've bought Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy from Amazon at 7.49 for 50 count. So far the ink has not even move after many pictures and black and white copies. At work at least 5 people have bought this printer and everyone has been extremely happy over the results.
25 easy to use, beautiful output
I haven't even connected this to a PC yet, so I can't comment on the included software. I just take my compact flash card, insert it in the printer, and print away (other media supported as well - see specs). The images are top-quality, and it's easy to choose/crop the images you want to print from the LCD screen on the printer. The fact that I don't have to replace a multi-color cartridge when only one of the colors is gone will keep me from putting out so much $$$ too, which is good.
