Cirque du Soleil - Quidam

1 Quidam is Cirque perfection
I just finished viewing "La Nouba" and I have to say that it displaces "O" as my second favorite Cirque du Soleil show. "Quidam" remains my favorite and the gold standard against which all other shows must be measured. In addition to these three, I've seen "Mystere", "Zumanity", "KA", "Varekai", "Alegria", "Saltimbanco", and "Dralion". It's no coincidence that my top three picks are all creations of Franco Dragone, who unfortunately, has left the company. All three also feature the music of Benoit Jutras. The artistry, surrealism, visual imagery, and music are all earmarks of a Dragone/Jutras show. There are some similarities between Quidam and La Nouba which might be the reason they are my favorites. They share some of the same acts such as the "German Wheel" and "Diabolos". The German Wheel acts are a bit different because in Quidam, there is only one wheel whereas in La Nouba, there are two. The result is that the single performer in Quidam maintains a faster, more acrobatic, pace where the duo in La Nouba act in sync. The Diabolos acts are virtually identical in both shows, except that Quidam's version has a spectacular ending that is lacking in La Nouba's. In both shows, the finale is the main event of the show - "Banquine" in Quidam and "Power Track (PT)/Trampoline" in La Nouba. Although "PT/Trampoline" is absolutely superb, "Banquine" remains my favorite of any act in any Cirque show. The combination of artistry, music, costumes, and unbelievable acrobatic ability in Banquine is sheer perfection. The weakest acts are the "Cloud Swing" in Quidam and "Cycles" in La Nouba. I've never really liked the clown acts in any of the Cirque shows and these two are no exception. Most Cirque shows have one or possibly two acts that are good enough to be the main event. La Nouba has two - "PT/Trampoline" and "Flying Trapeze". Quidam has three - "Banquine", "Skipping Ropes", and "Statue". Most main event acts feature large casts of at least 8-10 people and usually more. "Statue" is perhaps the only main event-quality act that has only two people. The one other advantage that Quidam has over La Nouba, at least on DVD, is the singing voice of Audrey Brisson-Jutras who is the daughter of musical composer Jutras. The lead vocalist in La Nouba is amazing, but there is something magical and haunting about Audrey's voice that sends chills up my spine every time I view Quidam. The reason that "O" drops to third place is that, as wonderful a show as it is artistically, the acrobatics are weak compared to most other shows. "O" does not contain a main event-quality acrobatic act. One other difference between Quidam and La Nouba is that La Nouba, with acts such as "High Wire", "Balancing on Chairs", and "Flying Trapeze" more closely resembles a traditional circus than Quidam. Both Quidam and La Nouba are "must have" DVDs for anyone who enjoys the Cirque du Soleil.
2 OMG
This is amazing. The stuff these people do is just amazing. i went to see the show live and bought this as a souveniour and still watch it all the time...BRILLIANT!
3 A Big Fat Sleeping Pill
The lighting was very strong and good. The costumes were great. The music was great. John Gilkey is very annoying and far from funny. He plays the character in the blue coat and jacket with the bald head called "John." He is just goofy and makes annoying faces. In one of the scenes where you're just getting into the music, John screams like a maniac. I hated that scene. The girl's (Zoe's) voice is nice, but the lyrics are just made of a bunch of annoying "Sooo" and "scoo" and "voo" and koo" sounds, unlike other shows, like Mystere, which have haunting lyrics. There are a lot of acts in this show, which makes it go by very slowly. Each act makes the show look like it's going to end, but it isn't. I felt very bored after the first couple of acts. The clowns are not funny at all. They just run around and say "Hey " "Woah" and "Bravo."
4 Big Dissapointment
After seeing Mystere, Vareka and Dralion I was truly dissapointed in the performance of Quidam.
Artistically the music, the theme was dark and gloomy and it lacked tremendously the pizzazz of the other shows.

The performance were nothing spectacular and I was little baffled from the wonderful reviews it received from the others.
I am not saying this was the worst show I have ever seen but compared to the others it truly was a disappointment.

I would highly recommend to check the other three before you venture into Quidam.

5 Incredible acrobatics but get a better editor and filmcrew!!
Personally, the only way I will ever see one of their performances is on TV. There is no way I can pay the price of tickets for a live show. Have you seen the prices lately!! Anyway, I got lucky and found this at a sale and quite enjoyed it but thought that whoever edited this thing should be fired. And then I found out that this is the best of their DVD's as far as editing goes!! There were a few places in here where the dumb editor cuts to the audience. Hey, I don't care what the audience is doing, ever, and especially not when something interesting is happening onstage!! Another time or two they got a close-up when you wanted to see it from afar because of what was going on like the rope scene. It was pretty good until right at the end and then they zoomed way in. You didn't even get the effect of all those guys tumbling down at the same time.
A few people have said you just have to experience them in person because there is no way to capture it all on disc. But I don't think there is any excuse for a professional group to use such poor editing unless it is on purpose so you will go to a live show. Really, kids at school edit better than this.
But with all that said, for the most part the editing was okay and it was a pretty incredible show.
6 The Greatest Show on Earth
Cirque du Soleil's production of "Quidam" is the most spectacular stage show that I have ever seen. There are moments that literally take your breath away as the cast seem to defy gravity with outstanding acts of strength and balance.

"Quidam" is so much more than a circus act. It is a grand show that is part musical, part dance show and part magic. The end result, however, is even more than the sum of the parts. If one were to try to list the highlights of the show, one would have great difficulty. Each component is magnificent in its own right.

The cast is drawn from all over the world yet the performance speaks just one language. Fantastic and compelling! The search for superlatives is a task in itself.

See this show! Buy this DVD!

7 Disappointment from Cirque
I am a dedicated Cirque fan, experiancing the delights of O, Alegria, Varekai, and Dralion. I recently saw Quidam on TV and was extremely disappointed that I sat and wasted 3 hours of my life in front of the TV for that. This annoying little girl never quits singing, and nothing very entertaining happens through the entire performance. If you want to become a huge Cirque Du Soleil fan, my advice is to not watch this one first, because it will spoil it for you. The best would be to go and see O (or Mystere) live in Las Vegas before anything.
8 The best of what mankind has to offer!
I think I now have every CdS DVD and have reviewed several of them, but not yet Quidam, as I have always found the words lacking for a proper review....and I still do(but will try it anyway)

Let me first say that John Gilkey is brilliant as the emcee/clown. He is doing something for almost the entire show, and much of the time what he is doing is utterly amazing. One of my favorite Cirque segments is when John runs out screaming with a hula hoop. He then proceeds to do things with the hula hoop which I cannot fathom even after watching the DVD many times over. Let's just say that I do not understand how anyone can possess such control, and furthermore do it every night! John's juggling scene in which he dances and juggles with the hat rack also shows that the level of his dexterity is far beyond that of any other mortal man, as is his sense of artistry.

This show is darker than the other Cirque shows, with a grimace instead of a smile on many of the performers faces. Not that it matters; just an observation. As for the acts- again, they are some of the best of any Cirque show. My personal favorite is the Statue, a music-less act where a man and a woman contort themselves with each other in a most imaginative and athletic manner. It has to be seen to be believed.

The girls with the diabolos are charming. The acrobats who end the show are unbelievable, using only their arms to launch others high into the air and to catch each other. Again, this is where words fast become inadequate. I strongly recommend anyone who has read this far to purchase this DVD and see why, after 66 reviews, it still garners a 5-star review.

In an era when it is en vogue to be negative, this show is a reminder that anything is possible and to never stop dreaming....so pick up the next hat of the headless wanderer you encounter:-)

I must end this review by repeating what another reviewer has already said: "Towards the end of this video I was struck with the thought "if ever the human race were put on trial by extraterrestrials for their atrocities, this should be exhibit A in their defense."

What else can be said?

9 Cirque du Soleil's Best
I was fortunate enough to see Quidam in its first American run, with the original performers and routines. I can say without hesitation that this DVD captures the beauty, and compelling aura, of the live performance - no easy feat. And in regards to the show itself, I feel strongly that it is the best Cirque du Soleil has ever offered.

With a message of innocence rediscovered in a world of jaded ennui, this show opens the viewers' eyes to seeing life in a new light. Personally, I felt completely renewed after watching, and still feel the magic, thanks to the DVD. Each time I view it, I walk away renewed, and encouraged.

There is not a weak act in the bunch, and several are utterly astounding - the hand-balancing stands out for its technical strength, and the contortion in silk is hauntingly beautiful. Sadly, the easy flow of the German wheel is somewhat lost in the DVD - in live performance, it was one of the best acts in the show. The clowns are as appealingly bizarre as ever. However, the real credit must go to John Gilkey, whose gangly-graceful character captures the heart. He leads the entire show with ease, guiding the production from one act to another...and his solo performances are works of art. His contribution alone makes the DVD worth owning.

A last mention that makes the DVD worthwhile is that it includes music from the show that isn't included on the CD - why these pieces were left out I'll never understand.

10 dodi
Of all the Cirque du Soleil shows I think this one is the best!!
Saw my first live performance in Las Vegas, but if you can not see one live this is the next best thing. Also have two other tapes and have enjoyed them as well. A great purchase and wonderful entertainment.
11 Sexy & Astounding
Fantastic show. Two thumbs up all around. Every act and performer is phenomenal. No weak links here. The music is as bizarre and errie as it is brillant. You feel like you are in a world created by Salvadore Dali when put together with the costumes and makeup. This show takes you into a dream like trance with some of the most athletic and visual pleasing acts that you have ever seen. There is definitely some spectactular shows and this one has to be the sexiest of ones which I have viewed. Mystere, O, Allegria and Saltimbatico (Saltimbaticao is weak). Wow. A must own.
12 Quidam
I just discovered these Cirque du Soleil DVD's to purchase. I've always wantd to see one of the shows live and never have. This will be my first purchase. Would some of the fans suggest the best one for my first purchase? THANKS!!!
13 Cirque du Soleil presents Quidam
This is definitely the best Cirque DVD there is.

Let's start with the video quality:
It is so good for a minute, I thought I was in Amsterdam, (Which is where it was filmed.)

The sound is so exellent I think it was better than the Big Top.

I have seen Varekai (Live and not live.), Mystere, (Live), Dralion (Not Live), Quidam (Not Live), Saltimbanco (Not live), Nouvelle Experence (Not Live and Cirque Reinvente (Not live.)

So out of all of the ones I haven't seen live, I think Quidam is the best.

14 My favorite so far...
I've watched several of the Cirque performances on Bravo HD. It really is like being in first row. The picture is so clear.
Not to say that the performances in each aren't excellent, but as far as "story-line" goes...most of them run together after a while and I can't say personally that any one stood out from another, until I saw Quidam. It is darker and intensely more magical than any of the other shows I've seen. I highly recommend it and plan to buy this dvd. I know this is one that I could watch again and again!
15 A life changing piece of art
I happened to catch this on TV by accident and I ordered it the same night--at 2:00 AM right after watching it.

It's difficult to adequately describe how this piece melds art, theatre, dance, acrobatics, and music into a single cohesive form with one breathtaking moment after another. There is pomp and spectacle, pathos, absurdity, and a running commentary on the human experience, seen through the eyes of a child. Rather than go on for pages about it, I'll just say that you have to see this one. A truly remarkable piece. I can hardly imagine how anyone could fail to be moved by this show.

16 Quidam review
This is probably the second best after Alegria..
what really got my attention was the skipping rope...
it was fabulous..4out of 5 stars
17 Quidam the DVD
This Cirque Du Soleil show, in which is about a journey seen through the eyes young girl, is amazing. It is one of my favorite cirque shows. The acts included in this dvd are, jump rope, ariel contortion in silk, diabolos, banquine, vice versa (statue), *****hand balencing, ariel hoops, german wheel, ariel ropes, and many more. My absolute favorite act is hand balencing on canes. It is performed by Olga Pikhienko, the same acrobat who does hand balencing in cirques latest production Varekai. This act is truly breath taking. The flexibility, stength and balence this acrobat performs seems virtually impossible. Cirque Du Soleil has yet to amaze us again! Other of my favorite acts include ariel contortion in silk. This is done by Issabel Chasse, the same girl who was in the group contortion in Nouvelle Expirience (an earlier cirque show.) Diabolos is a good act, it is performed by cute little asain girls who catapult chinese yoyos in the air. Jump roping is also good, it is full of many energetic performers. This cirque show is just amazing, I highly recomend it.
18 By far one of the greatest shows ever !!!
This movie has a great mixture of art, music, and performance to keep even the most belligerent person thoroughly entertained. I am only 16, but I found this movie to be simply outstanding, far above and beyond anything else you will ever see. With only the exception of one of the other fine Cirque Du Soleil performances. I have personally been to only one of there shows, Varekai, and it was awesome to say the least. So in conlusion I would highly recommend this or any other Cirque Du Soleil movie no matter how sceptical you are about its quality of content.
19 A Circus Unlike Others
When I watch a Cirque du Soleil ("Circus of the Sun") performance, I wonder how they were able to put together enough backing to launch the idea. "Yes, Mr. Investor, we're going to stage a surreal, artistic, small-scale circus for adults, with no animals or clowns. It will be one part circus, one part opera, and one part gymnastics. You'll be rich if you invest." "Ha, ha, ha, no really, what is the project really about?"

But, Cirque du Soleil successfully blends those very factors into an entrancing, dreamlike show that leaves the viewer not sure what is real. "Quidam" revolves around a child who seems lost and neglected as he/she wanders through a surreal world inhabited by slow-motion gymnasts, people with distorted bodies, and people spinning around the stage inside giant hoops. They all seem bizarre to the child, who is fascinated, somewhat afraid, lost, and exhilarated.

This is not for every viewer. If you can catch a Cirque du Soleil performance on television, or rent a tape, you'll either turn it off soon, or be captivated. If you're captivated, buy this tape, as it is so unusual that it can be enjoyed when watched again and again. Oh, and the investors who did say yes went "ha, ha, ha" all the way to the bank.

20 Ohmigawsh!!
I cannot begin to tell you how amazing Cirque du Soleil is. The whole show is absolutely electrifying, not only becase of the acrobatics and acting, but because of the sets, the music, and the costumes as well. Every bit of the stage shimmers with life and magic. The characters have amazing amounts of expression in them, and communicate every moment perfectly. Quidam has enough plot to create a stunning story, but leaves room for the interpretation that is the essence of the show. Also, the filming is superb. I am very interested in creating costumes and sets for the theatre, and Quidam was very inspiring to this. You'll have the music stuck in your head forever too, by the way...
21 Absolutely Breathtaking
I have been studying the Cirque Du Soleil productions for the past few months. Each time I watch this DVD, I see something new. The music, the athleticism, the choreography, and the lighting are astounding. Attention to detail is an understatement. Everything is so well timed and executed. You won't be disappointed. Buy it and enjoy.
22 Wonderful!
This is a wonderful DVD to add to your collection. I saw Quidam live before I saw the DVD. While the DVD is really great, it comes nowhere near the experience of seing it live. I bought it as a momento of going to the show. I also strongly suggest the soundtrack. The talents of the performers with Cirque du Soleil are breathtaking!
23 SPECTACULAR!!!!!!!!
After I saw this performed live that is exactly what I thought! Quidam will keep you at the edge of your seat, craving for more amazing acts. I was sad to get up when the intermission came and even sadder when it ended. The music was absolutely perfect for the performance and the acts were really breath-taking. I would suggest seeing Quidam live before the movie but both are exellent.
24 My first Cirque Experience
After my parents having gone to Treasure Island to see Mystere, I knew I would really enjoy a Cirque performance, based on their reactions to the show. I ordered a package through Columbia House, with Quidam and Dralion both. Quidam has a storyline that is more elaborate, and developed (in my opinion) than Dralion. After watching it repeatidly, I am still amazed at how many nuances I can pick out that I had never noticed before. Without going into specifics I would say that the theatrics and acts are coordinated beautifully, juxtaposed to the weaker story of Dralion, which seems to focus mainly on the acts. Surely Quidam is a must-see.
25 Classic Cirque
After having seen Alegria and Dralion I did not know what to expect when I saw Quidam. Like all other Cirque shows this has re-invented the circus yet again. With amazing aerial displays of feat, and some amazing acrobatics on the ground, this show will amaze all. From the sheer size of the stage under the Big Top to the acts I was very impressed by this production. This first act was German Wheel and let me say I have never seen anyone do that with a wheel before, you have to see it to believe it. The Aerial Contortion was amazing, having seen Isabelle Chasse in Nouvelled Experience I was pleased to see her in another production. The came Skipping Ropes, boy I wished I had paid more attention in gym class, I could be a Cirque star. Two other acts to mention are the Handbalancing and Banquine. They will amaze all. If you are a Cirque fan than this show is for you.
26 AMAZING
I went to the live show in Miami and this dvd is a must even if you have seen the show like me. So imagaine for me, that I saw the show live and still love the dvd,im ordering you now to see it,the music is amazing, the performances and the actual camera work was great.
I bought La Nouba after seeing it live and it wasnt even close to Quidam!!!! Get Quidam you wont regret it,I promise you!!
27 Extrodinaire
This was the most wonderful show I've seen in a long time. I was mesmerized by each and every act. The whole performance was just magnificant. You have to see this to believe it and appreciate it. I'm looking forward to seeing more.
28 A surreal and entertaining experience!!
I first saw this video at a cousin's who hapened to have it, the video does not only entertain but it will make you curious enough to want to see it in person, even though the Quidam troop is not presently on tour in the U.S. The idea behind Cirque du Soleil not to use performing animals will not bother you once you begin watching. There are high altitude acts with no net, such as a ladythat comes down at high altitude on a piece of strong fabric and doing contortions in mid air with little else holding her. There are no clowns in the traditional sense, but there is a character named John who dances juggles and does some pretty funny physical comedy with a set of darts witha bulseye held flat on top of his head. Other great acts are a german young man who perfoms the german wheel which is a two dimensional wheel with monkey bar handles a great feat of coordination, agility and strength, making the wheel go forwards, backwards, sideways while he is inside this wheel controlling it with the use of his body. Another interesting act is a contortion and hand balancing act by a perfomer named Olga Pikienko, she has great highly cordinated choreographed moves moving from one set of balancing beams no larger than the size of a foot or hand. It is a grand production with music perfomed live, a story which centers on loosing our inner child by becoming consumed with the material self obsessed world. Highly recommended for anyone curious about Cirque du Soleil, I have viewed it several times and don't easily tire of it...
29 I am glad somehow my dream still exists
I was sitting on the couch and watchingthe dvd. I never heard of cirque du soleil until then. After all Zoe started her journey and took us all with her into that fantasy with beauitul dreams and horendous nightmares. The acrobatic themes began with the German wheel followed by the diabolo. I have to admit that these two along with the hand balancing and banquine. I have seen lots of amazing diabolo performances when I was in Taiwan, but still found the whole sequence from those four girls astonishing. The German wheel is unbelievable, because it's just hard to imagine how can a human body can direct and redirect the movement of the wheel.......I may have to write a paper to discribe everything though. But I think the only act I like less is the Clowns, they were funny for a while, then they got a little annoying. John Gilkey is great great actor, he made me laugh with every act he put on.

I think the best part of Quidam is it's music and theme. The theme, unlike any others cirque du soleil show I have seen, showed the vision of a girl's mind, not just a story from our view anymore. Zoe brought the audience into the fantsy, and led us through her experience of bore, amaze, terror..... I must also say that the it was so unique that Cirque du Soleil used a self-created language in every show. Quidam was no exception. Even some lyrics can never be understood, but the audience coud still feel it, the emotion and the power from the music, the story and all the act. I am getting tired of typing, so I won't write no more. One last thing I have to say is: get the dvd, even if you never like circus.

30 Wonderfully entertaining!
If you are a fan of Cirque Du Soleil, this is a must have. Very entertaining! This is a DVD that you can watch over and over again and still be amazed.
31 One of my favorite Cirques
The show is very entertaining from start to finish, and I find myself watching it over and over. The music and acts blend very well together along with the costumes. John Gilkey is quite possibly the best clown in all the Cirques I have watched. Quidam is worth the purchase just to see him perform.
32 one of the best dvds we have ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We could not leave the show, after we saw it we tryed to go to sleep (at 2 am), but the music kept playing in our heads, we were wxcited so much from the whole thing, so we got out from bed and went to see it for the second time! And twice more on the next day, 7 times in 3 days! I cant even explain why it got us in such a way, but we loved every minute of it until today.
33 Better in person but still fantastic
Having seen the show live twice I was thrilled to see the DVD version of quidam. Like all of Cirque Du Soleil's videos the technical production is fabulous. I was slightly bummed to see that the act involving the pair using the weighted red balls was not included but this in no way diminished the package. Overall I found the DVD stunning and I'm impressed by how well it was adapted from the big top to the screen.
34 Cirque du Soleil comes of age.
My personal history of experiences with Cirque du Soleil is erratic - my first exposure to them being a trip to "Saltimbanco" in London's Royal Albert Hall, a performance so unexpectedly magical and so unlike any other event I have attended that I subsequently went a further five times, taking everybody I could persuade to come with me.

Video purchases of this, and "Nouvelle Experience" followed, which was equally delightful.

This was followed by "Alegria", which, I have to say, bitterly disappointed me. I found it lacked the sheer exuberance of "Saltimbanco", and whereas most Cirque productions seem to have a clear theme, I found "Alegria" an obtuse and disparate confusion of inferior acts to those of "Saltimbanco", chained together with clowning routines taken verbatim (with no warning nor apology) from Russian clown Slava's previous "Snowshow" production.

"Quidam", however, is not only as much a return to form, more a totally productive reinvention and enhancement of it, resulting in an equally magical, but also a superior, more mature, elegant offering, with a powerful theme, profound symbology, incredible acrobatic performances, layer upon layer of belief-shattering visuals, and outstanding musical moments. This is Cirque du Soleil's tour-de-force and finest moment to date, and elevates "Circus" to the league of fine art.

Witness the "simple" routine whereby a hula-hoop is jettisoned so that it orbits a clown in a slowly decreasing spiral, to finally roll straight into his hand, that had been accurately positioned to accept it from the start, and you will begin to understand the level of utter control and perfection that exudes from this production at every opportunity.

Towards the end of this video I was struck with the thought "if ever the human race were put on trial by extraterrestrials for their atrocities, this should be exhibit A in their defence". This video will make you gasp in awe, laugh, cry, dream, and spend some time afterwards pondering the nature of the human condition.

Simply, a masterpiece.

35 Unbelievable!
I was spell-bound watching this for the first time. Although there are some not-so-exciting as other sections, the majority of the acts are unbelievable. What a grand mix of physical beauty, strength, flexibility and art! The best has to be a toss-up between the "scarf dance" by the solo acrobat and the couple doing the most amazing lift moves. The musical background is so well written in that it matches the visual routines.

If you want visual stimulation with an appreciation for the fine arts, then this is a MUST! Having a history in gymnastics and music performance, I never tire from seeing this DVD over and over again and again.

36 My favorite!
I've seen 4 Cirque shows live: Quidam, Mystere, O, and Dralion. Quidam is my favorite. This DVD captures Quidam nicely, although it's no substitute to seeing them in the big tent. Buy the DVD, get the CD, then try to catch the Quidam travelling tour.
37 Great Show, Beautifully Filmed!
I have been lucky enough to have seen a couple of Cirque's shows but I had never bought a video. I thought it could not be captured on film well. This was very incorrect, my parents just bought this DVD and I used it to test a new DVD player of mine, and to my delight the DVD was fantastic. The quality of the film-making is fantastic, and the show is great. Whoever produced the DVD did a great job of capturing a live Cirque show. I would highly reccomend going to a Cirque show to anyone. I would also HIGHLY RECCOMEND this DVD to any fan of Cirque du Soleil.
38 THE DREAMED CIRCUS
After I bought Saltinbanco and Nouvelle Experience (both from Cirque du Soleil), I like Quidam as the best of the three. My autistic daugther enjoy these videos and can mantain her atention for a lot of time. I thing she would recomend the cirque du Soleil videos if she can talk.
39 Gold
Yes,yes worth it's weight in gold. One of the best shows on earth ever. You will never get bored watching this whenever you pop it in your DVD for your friends to be amazed. If you've seen the original performance you still want this memento. All the reviews here are so positive, it's just a waste of time to keep reading them.Just buy it and enjoy.
40 Not the Live Show, but the Next Best Thing
Having seen the live shows, I was a little skeptical that a video could do it justice. I'm not a skeptic anymore. Excellent cinematography and wonderful editing. Music was beautiful. If you're a Cirque fan already, you probably won't be disappointed. It's not exactly like being there but the DVD is cheaper then a ticket and you can enjoy it over and over.
41 Soleil Shines!
Having watched two previous productions on video(Nouvelle experience, Saltimbanco), I can honestly say that Quidam has to be the most visually and artistically stunning of the three.

Unlike the first two, annoying camera angles and effects are kept to a bare minimum, except for the German Wheel act. Also, the quality of the tape itself (image and sound) is superior and comes in nice clamshell packaging.

I will not bother decribing the acts when much will be lost in the translation anyway and the wonder and magic can only really be appreiciated visually in a show or on video. However, I will say this. These current group of performers touring Europe having got to be the finest I have seen. There is really no substitute for perfection and this is the one of the more impressive aspects of this show. While other shows have employed the use of safety devices ( don't get me wrong, I'm all for safety), this troup has the confidence and competence to execute their amazing stunts mostly without the use of any saftey apparatus. Maybe the degree of difficulty might be a factor, but being propelled upwards in the air and ending up in a handstand position on top of a 3 man human pyramid is just incredible.

More impressive is the way all the acts are choreographed to the haunting and mesmerizing music composed by Benoit Jutras. From the majestic opening, to the cheeky skipping rope act and the acrobates in Banquine, the acts are performed to the music beat for beat. I very often wonder whether the acts are choreographed to the music, or the music is composed to fit in with the acts. Or maybe a combination of the two perhaps? Anyway, no matter how it was done, it's just pure magic.

I really haven't got a bone to pick about Quidam even after having watched it about twenty times. I guess this is one advantage of owning the video, you can watch it over and over and over again...

42 exentric
I have travel every where to see the cirque du soleil i have to say that it is an experience that words couldnt do justice. it is so big it can be contain in the tent. i love every second of the show . the tapes are a reminder of the great experience the show is.
43 Never get borded watching it...
I have several Cirque du Soleil performances on video (DVD and tape), and this one is my favorite. Unfortunately, I've never seen a Cirque performance live, but I will the next chance I get.

Quidam is phenomenal in so many ways. The performances are amazing. Audrey's singing is amazing, forget that she's only 12. The embedded storyline is intriguing. And the music is the best I've heard from Benoit Jutras (Audrey's father for those keeping score at home).

The only disappointment is that the disc cover and tech specs on the disc (...) say that the subtitles are in English and French. What they don't tell you is the subtitles are limited to the 30 seconds of words that appear in the beginning, and nothing more. I would like to have seen a translation of what she's singing, but subtitles get to be distracting anyway.

Bottom line- it's spectacular!

44 I felt I was there. It`s amazing
I have seen Cirque Du Soleil before in Hong Kong and I don`t have words to say what is to see it live. The whole cirque not only the artists are incredible. They really know how to make a world of fantasy. Everybody should see it and dream inside this fantasy.
45 Reality moves out
Reality moves out of your home when Quidam moves in. A world of fantasy, a fantastic world. A little girl, Zoe, who is bored and is treated almost indifferently by her own parents, is taken a world of magic and beauty when the headless, faceless Quidam arrives literally at her door. This show is about the beauty of man and woman, our strengths and our sorrows, our dreams, passions, and even our fears.

This show is spectacular. This is the first I have seen of the Cirque du Soleil, and it won't be the last. The impression it made on me pulls me to see the show live in Europe.

If you haven't seen the Cirque du Soleil or even heard of them before. You can't go wrong with Quidam. It is an artistic collage of acrobatics, dance, and drama set to excellent music in a fresh way like I, and perhaps the world has ever known.

47 Cirque du Soleil: Quidam
I saw Quidam for the first time about three weeks ago. I had never even heard of it before and since then I spread the word, now everyone I know is raving about it. In three weeks I have seen Quidam more than thirteen times. I bought the DVD yesterday and saw it three more times. Quidam is a work of art which I feel everyone should experience at least once, it left me speachless and in awe of the amazing show. A combination of circus talents and musical story, which unfolds a story of emptiness turned to discovery of our world and the imagination that guides us. Awesome acrobatics and mind boggling stunts to thrill at time and time again mixed with a soothing and upbeat background music. A definite must for anyone interested in art form, music, theater and of course awe inspiring acrobatics. Quidam is one I will never tire of, and I continue to be awed by it with every viewing.
48 not as good as it is live, but still amazing
I had seen Quidam live 2 years ago, and was blown away. It was so haunting and gorgeus. I wanted to see it all over again. when i got the tape i was a bit dissapointed. Many acts were cut short, or completly out of the show. But i finally got to see the handbalancing act. I was amazed at how impressive and creative the costumes and makeup were up close (i was in the middle and could barely see). Unfortunately though you cut out many of the funny clown acts. there should of been double VHS or something of this show. Its three hours worth sitting through. And the music is so beautiful and fun. Even though this falls short of the live show, its not a dissapointing purchase.
49 Something to knock your socks off.
I have seen 2 Cirque du Soleil shows live, and video does not do Cirque du Soleil justice. There is so much to see in the real show that you feel much more part of the show as the action is going on around you. There is so much to see in the live show that you walk out of the show barely remembering half of what you saw, but knowing that it was all spectacular and unbelievable. Because of the nature of the show, seeing it on DVD is a far cry from watching it live, but it is still worth the price of the DVD. Even watching the DVD will cause your jaw to drop to the floor. Well worth the money and you can watch it over and over to remember how spectacular it all is. The DVD does seem to leave out parts of the show, but I think it is mainly the clowns, and they do some things that would spoil the live show for you if you saw it on video first.
50 Transcendant Theater
This video was my introduction to the Cirque Du Soleil, and what an introduction it was! I don't have enough adjectives to describe the experience of watching the performances on this tape - amazing and inspirational are two that come to mind. Unlike many on these pages, I did not find the editing or camera work too distracting. I did have a sense, however, that I was seeing only a portion of the show, but this was due to the limitations of television. It seems that a Cirque Du Soleil performance demands to be witnnessed live. I am eagerly awaiting my chance to do so with their new touring show, "Drallion". If you think you might grow tired of watching one spectacular display of acrobatics, performance art and theater after another, then don't bother with"Quidam".
51 Soleil Shines!

52 Don't base your opinion of Cirque on this video
It shouldn't be a surprise that Cirque du Soleil is impossible to capture on film (or tape). It can barely be contained in a tent!

As a video, Quidam itself is fun -- as well done as one could hope -- but it will mean considerably less to one who never saw the show live. For those of us who have, the tape is an agreeable souvenir, but the sheer visceral impact of a Cirque show is missing.

Case in point: the main-a-main, or handbalancing act. Live -- in a darkened arena, with eerie, intense sound and strange, allegorical images of death hovering overhead -- this spectacular performance becomes a metaphor for age and the human struggle against it. On the tape, it's simply two amazingly strong athletes performing a remarkable act. Impressive, but it loses all of its emotional impact.

Go see Cirque live whenever, wherever you can. You'll never be disappointed (besides, every show is a little different). But I don't recommend buying a tape of a Cirque show until after you see it live -- when it can remind you of this amazing troupe's conception and performance, rather than introduce it.

53 Cirque du Soleil: Quidam
Cirque du Soleil continues to expand the limits of artistic expression! Every performer featured in "Quidam" is interconnected with each portion of the program. The fluidity, grace, beauty, and strength each of the participants project is a sight to behold! One word describes "Quidam": wonderment. If you're ever in Las Vegas, Nevada, be sure to check out "Mystere" (I've seen the show seven times) and "O" (the "water show"). You'll take a journey into peace, laughter, love and harmony. I can't wait for "The Journey of Man" and the other travelling shows to come out on DVD!
54 Absolutely Awesome!
Once again, Cirque Du Soleil transcends, astounds, enraptures. The performances are intriguing and magnificent, unique and unbelievable, and all are saturated with a surreal quality that keeps your eyes locked onto the screen. I have one complaint. The camera frustrates me TERRIBLY during many of the performances with swinging lenses that nauseate, close-ups that are so close you might as well have your eyes closed for all you can see, and shots of an audience member during the best three seconds of an act! The effect of the German Wheel is completely ruined by a camera that rolls and spins and whips around. In the future I hope the shows are filmed with a steady, level view so that the acts can be seen clearly and in their entirety as they should be!
55 "Quidam"
"Quidam" is a awe inspiring journey through the eyes of a young girl. I loved every minute of it!
56 Surreal!
Cirque du Soleil is by far the most unique and beautifully twisted, surreal experience available. Quidam is another example of why no one compares to them. The production is masterful, the sound wonderful, and camera work superb. I just wish that there was more behind the scenes info and footage.
57 Fellini meets The Nutcracker at the circus
For anyone who hasn't seen Cirque du Soleil live, this is a good beginning, and it will only get better in person. The one advantage of the DVD (or video) is the ability to see closeup shots of the performers and catch moments you might otherwise have missed on the stage, where many touching moments can happen apart from the main action. From the thrilling athleticism of the performers, the choreography (the dreamlike ensemble rope jumping vignette), and the makeup, to the creative costuming (which in the Banquine evokes a post-apocalyptic Les Miserables), it's all present in just enough quantities to capture most of the essence of Cirque du Soleil at its best. John Gilkey's well known juggling/mambo dance with three balls and a hat rack is a sly highlight, as well as his deceptively simple stunt with a rolling hoop.

The editing is not always the best (I found the German Wheel performance lost all its rhythm and flow), and if you want to enjoy the music, I'd recommend buying the soundtrack on CD instead. But if you want to see a work of art that is more than a circus performance, start here.

58 What a treat!
What a treat to find this video of the only Cirque Show I have seen in person! Recorded in Amsterdam, all of my favorite acts were there (and this time, with a closeup, even better than being there). My only complaint was certain performances got an artsy treatment (like the act with the wheel) but other than that, a fabulous video.
59 not as good as the PPV
I saw this performance on pay-per-view and absolutely fell in love! I had never seen a Cirque performance before and was totaly mesmerized. Buying this for my father-in-law, I expected the same amazing show. Unfortunately, the video rendition suffers from terribly distracting camera work and the best acts are cut very short. However, for one who has never seen a Cirque performance it is still worth watching. I can only hope their future videos are more representative of their live shows.
60 A Cirque Lovers Dream
FINALLY! A superior capture of a Cirque du Soleil performance. I sufferied through the last two ("Novelle Experience" and "Saltimbanco") disappointing videos. Watching one missed opportunity after another, I had to draw from my memory of being at the performance to complete the picture. Or else I had to overcome annoying camera tricks. At last there is a film that enhances the experience of "Quidam" that surpasses the visions one gets from a a seat in the audience, and ALMOST equals the experience of being there.

Let me explain. Camera shots and close-ups are much improved over previous ventures (I have not seen the film of "Alegria"), and now are better integrated into the overall experience. Rather than trying to perform camera stunts of their own (there are some exceptions), the viewpoint tries to capture or comment on what is being filmed.. The sound quality (captured from a live performance) is supurb.

And the acts are wonderful. Many are actually more enjoyable [to me] than in my two live viewings because of the viewpoint of this film. While some are not as impressive as some past acts have been, the way the entire production encompasses their essence improves their impact. And some of the acts, quite frankly, are simply as good as it gets.

But in this instance, the whole is far greater than the parts. This has always been a Cirque trait, but is particularly evident in "Quidam". The vision that permeates every frame of this film, every motion of every performer, every brush stroke in every make-up, every note in the score, every stitch in every costume-- is as advanced as anything seen in any art-form -painting, dance, theater, music, athletic arts, light, sound, technical theatre --all fully expressed in one overwhelming artistic statement that produces no less than a state of awe. Hey, but that is what you expect from Cirque du Soleil.

You get it here. For the first time (in my humble opinion) on film. And now you can sit at home in comfort and admire it again and again-- and you can show your friends what it is like to be in a very special world of enchantment.

61 NOT A CIRCUS - A DREAM AWAKING
I have experienced Cirque du Soleil's 'Mystere' twice; unfortunately not 'Quidam' and had always hoped 'Mystere' would be released on video so I could watch it with my daughter - who listens to all of Cirque's soundtracks with me. When the 'Quidam' video came out (her and I had already memorized the soundtrack), we watched and cried and laughed in unison. Magic. At the end, she said: 'Dad, I feel so happy...and sad.' The Cirque du Soleil spirit is captured very well in both the video and the audio productions. John Gilky's pseudo-juggling antics are priceless and the angelic voice of Audrey Brisson-Jutras sends shivers up and down my spine. I wish she and her father - Cirque soundtrack composer Benoit Jutras - would release a musical project of their own (if they haven't already). If one has never seen a Cirque du Soleil show, this video is the next best thing. Be sure to have a big-screen TV, surround-sound stereo system, and an extra large tub of popcorn (but watch out for the usher).
62 My first Cirque
Quidam is a very moving piece of work. I've never seen Cirque before, and I saw this show on Pay-per-view and fell in love. That very night, I ordered the soundtrack, very haunting, and put it on repeat--it's a sort of Tom Waits meets the Ringling Brothers. Having never seen the live show, I can't share the other reviewers' complaints of what is missing. I can only report what is here. Fantastic acrobatics, gymnastics, and theatre the likes of which I've never seen--and one of my college degrees is in theatre. I encourage any lover of any art or even storytelling to purchase this DVD immediately and watch it a loved one, alone, with family, or a complete stranger. Quidam is truly one of the most magnificent works of live entertainment I've ever witnessed. If you've never seen Cirque, as I hadn't, please ignore the negative feedbacks on this page, and invest the money in Quidam.
63 Where's the beef?
After the glowing recommendations, I purchased the tape. Slighly, more than slightly, disappointed. Certainly different but...was it entertaining? Not particularly. Acts were too long, too trite for the most part. A few good acts but you have to be very patient.
64 heart thumping quidam
This is a true cross between the circus and broaway. It has so much passion, laughter and life relationships, that anyone can and should relate to it. It is a MUST SEE for anyone who is a fan of the theater.
65 I have attended live and watched the DVD, both are great
I have attended live and seen the DVD. I was very happy with my purchase. My 17, 15 and 12 year old children loved it also.
66 5 stars for a 5 star show
Finally it's here, Quidam on Video. My favourite touring show, with "O" taking the top marks in the fixed location department. After endless e-mails to Cirque's marketing department, on when it would be out, it comes just in time for Christmas. Shot in Amsterdam, The Netherlands back in April this year, the show does a great job capturing the images of the show. From the joyfully opening of Chris Lashua's German Wheel via the erotic Aerial contortion in silk by Isabelle ChasŽ to the heart-stopping Banquine finale by the entire cast. Many acts are shortend, espcially the playfull diabolos and hoop acts, others such as the Manipulation act, did not play in Amsterdam. However, the Manipulation act is replaced by the wonderfull Handbalancing, which used to alter with the diabolos back in the states but is back as a full act here. One thing is great though, and please Cirque take notice, One boring clown act per show is really enough, and really takes enough speed out of the show, Quidam would be even better without Les Malcoma and with another act!, John alone brings more laughs than those three idiots from France.

Having seen the show 11 times, I would certainly say that Quidam on Video is something else than Quidam live, feeling the bass in the tent during the Statue just adds to the whole experience. Being in the tent Cirque is a 360o experience something that is very difficult to capture on tape, even with Yet, the video provides 90 minutes of non-stop entertainment that is not to be missed. The quality of both the sound is so good, it eliminates the need for a Quidam live CD, since the orginal version just lacks many of the wonderful show tracks.

Indeed 5 stars for this video of this 5 star show. Simply because it does what it should do: it reminds you of a great night, it can't compete with it, but hey for the price you can't even buy a restricted view seat and then you certainly won't see and feel as much of the show as you do when you buy this wonderful tape. Now let's all keep our fingers crossed for a full version of MystŽre on Video in 2003!, which shouldn't be that hard.....

67 A bit cheated...
A brilliant performance by the entire cast (or at least what's left of it after several years of touring). Definitely can't compare with seeing it live (I've seen it 3 times hehe) but a great way to keep the memory alive. My only bite: what's up with all the cuts and editing? Why chop a 3 hr. show in half? It's on dvd. Hello? There's plenty of room for the whole thing by either double layering the disc or double siding it. The brilliant intro, the clown interludes, even the manipulation act -- completely cut out! That's why I can only give this edition 4 stars. Props to Benoit Jutras for his amazing score. Without a doubt the most musical and gorgeous soundtrack I have ever heard. Tis all for now...
68 Cirque's Intense Masterpiece
This is easily the finest of the Cirque du Soleil videos. The show is in incredible performance for all 90 minutes; everyone plays their parts to perfection. Prepare to be amused by Skipping Ropes, transfixed by a human Statue, and changed forever by Aerial Contortions in Silk.
69 INCREDIBLE!
You must see this amazing presentation of performance art
70 Another wonderful experience
As a big fan of Cirque du Soleil, I found this experience another mesmerizing trip to the owrld of high quality entertainment that can only be expected from unique cast of Cirque du Soleil, Bravo!
71 If you can't get to a live performance...
You can see Cirque du Soleil for the first time just once, unfortunately. Your first Cirque exposure is so disorienting and magical that the subsequent shows never quite measure up. Quidam does the best job yet of making the experience brand new again. (And if Quidam is your first Cirque show, so much the better!) Some people may regard Cirque du Soleil as not much more than an arty Las Vegas show. For some of us, however, it's a religious experience. If you can't get to a live performance, buy this video. Buy this video anyway!
72 Following the Cirque tradition, Quidam represents it well...
I've seen Quidam twice in New York City, and once in Washington DC, each time was more amazing than the one preceding it. The music, the visual, and the general atmosphere. Almost surreal to the eye, you shouldn't miss this one!! It's probably best if you saw it live, but watching it on DVD is always a last resort. Truly amazing!! Also, don't forget to catch other Cirque on video such as Saltimbanco (not so good on video, too many dizzying visual effects used), and Nouvelle Experience (excellent even on video). Cirque is really establishing itself, don't be surprised if you start seeing a permanent Cirque show at a town near you!!
73 Wonderful job of capturing the spirit of le cirque du soleil
Quidam is the most dramatic and theatrical of all Cirque productions, and this video does an excellent job of capturing the soul of the show. All cirque fans will want this video!

Quote of the Day:

Ever since prehistoric times, wise men have tried to understand what,

exactly, make people laugh. That's why they were called "wise men." All the
other prehistoric people were out puncturing each other with spears, and the
wise men were back in the cave saying: "How about: Would you please take my
wife? No. How about: Here is my wife, please take her right now. No How
about: Would you like to take something? My wife is available. No. How
about ..."
