Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Sound System
1 I hope you know your way around a computer!
Funny, I dont see any comments below about how insanely DIFFICULT it is to install this card. And dont look to the manual, it wont help.

To install this board, the first thing you must do is go into the setup BIOS and disable the onboard audio-this is not in the instructions. Then you may install this Sound Blaster only to find that your system says it is working properly, but you still dont have any sound. After days of screwing around with this thing I got this wonderful advice back from Creative Labs tech support..."uninstall all other PCI devices along with the sound card, then reinstall the sound card first. Test your sound, and if it still doesnt work, uninstall and move to another slot." HUH?!? Well, that's exactly what it took, uninstalling EVERYTHING and starting all over.

I must say that the sound is amazing now that I've got this thing working, but I also upgraded to Klipsch 5.1 speakers so I wont give all the credit to Creative Labs. And dont expect any assistance from their tech support on weekends, or evenings...they keep bankers hours. Too bad, I could use some help diagnosing and fixing this constant "popping" sound I hear now about ever 5-10 minutes.

I never had these kind of problems with my Hercules Digifire which was plug and play and gave me years of beautiful troublefree service. Not worth the trouble. POP!
2 Audigy is tops....
Yes, there are some sound cards in the same price range as this Audigy 2 that would be sufficient for most people and their uses. However if you are a gamer, have a decent set of surround sound speakers, and like to enjoy the "environments" of action games, then an Audigy 2 is for you. It allows for endless customization of sound, and has all the features like EAX advanced sound that your old sound card probably doesnt. It's also got a firewire jack to go along with the multi speaker inputs. The directions are simple and straghtforward for installation, and I wouldnt forsee many problems. If your looking for a great sound card at the right price, this is for you. If you want more inputs and features, go with the Audigy 2 Platinum edition, or the Platinum PRO.
3 GOOD BUT I NEED THE SOFTWARE
HI, THIS ITEM LOOKS REALLY GOOD, BUT I DID NOT REALIZE THAT IT DID NOT COME WITH THE SOFTWARE CD, SO, IF THERE IS ANY ONE THAT CAN HELP ME WITH THIS ISSUE AND SEND IT TO ME BY EMAIL, I WILL APRECIATTE IT, MY EMAIL IS mendoza_jose@bellsouth.net I HAVE NO PROBLEMS RECEIVING BIG FILES,, THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP
4 Great Buy!
Its funny because I have one of the cheapest 5.1 speakers on the market, but they sound amazing due to this sound card, it is a must have if you want good pc sound. I advise not to get the pro model of this because this model of the zs is definately the best value for features. Everything is good from the bundled software to EAX HD game support (flat out amazing).
5 Awesome Card
Listen up everyone! This sound cound is very very good. I recently installed this in my PC and have had no problems with it.
It also helps to have a sweet digital surround to compliment it as well. The THX, and EAX and Extended dts ES Surround does this card justice. I totally recommend this card to anyone who wishes to step it up from their factory installed sound card.

7 Excellent sound card!!!
I has everything you need. it supports most speakers setups (up to 7.1)is EAX 4.0 capable and hits hard. it's very worthed the price. highly recomended if you want total hi-fi audio. :D
8 Good If you understand basic internal computer structure.
It wasnt easy putting in this card. I have a midsize computer case and although this card wasnt as much trouble as my new hard drive it still was a pain to do all of it in a timely fasion... All together it took me around 45mins -to- 1hour to get it completed and then 15-20 to install softwear.

The best thing about this card is the great sound quality, that I havent seen before.

9 Best on the market!
I, like another reviewer, have a Dell system with an SB Live! card. The live's not bad (It'll get you by if you dont like nifty features) but, I loved the Audigy 2 much more. I had no system conflicts. Plus it even comes with cool music management and enhancement software! I am not saying it'll work for everyone, but it worked for me sure 'nuff! It is very reasonably priced for all you get; plus it was a snap to install!
10 Incredible
Incredible sound, great features. Oh man, where to start. First off it is 7.1, 6.1, and 5.1 compatible I use 7.1 with the Creative Inspire T7700 speakers and it is amazing the difference you can hear in games. Also 24-bit audio, which can improve the quality of even regular 16-bit songs. It has every audio technology available, more than your home theater or ampliphier probably. DTS-ES, Dolby Digital-EX, THX, EAX, as well as a zillion software programs, and possible configurations and settings (you can make it sound like your in a cave or a concert hall, or add karaoke, what ever you want). This sound card is also essential for recordings. And for only $90 you'd be crazy not to allow yourself a little luxary for your pc experience.
11 BUYER BE WARE,,,,,,READ THE REVIEWS B4 YOU BUY !!
Everything I know about the Audigy cards by Creative Labs tells me they are "most excellent". I upgraded from the most stripped down card they ever offered (as far as I know)- the SB Live! Value (Dell OEM). The OEM was even more stripped down than the retail version. The sound was INCREDIBLE on the nice speaker system I owned. Well, I updated the speakers and found that old card would not support them, so I decided it was time to update the card as well. I researched the newest ones on the market and found the Audigy 2 series to be affordable, "high zute", and rated great by most techies.

HERE"S THE GLITCH!!!!! If you are upgrading from an older computer system---- ESPECIALLY a DELL XPS generation 1 or 2 system----- the Audigy cards, even the oldest ones, will not work on the Dell mother boards. Your computer may meet the minimum requirements the sound card calls for but IT WILL NOT WORK. You won't find this information at Creative Labs anywhere, but if you go to Dell Forum and check the Dimension/Audio forum you will find plenty. I found out too late.

Bad news-- once you uninstall it to send it back cuz it don't work-- it will mess up your system. My scanner won't work right, I have had to uninstall other devices and reinstall them to get them to work.....etc, etc. Not worth the headache!

So, what can you do if you have no sound card or an old sound card and want to be able to support 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 speakers.

Try the Live! 24-bit card offered by Creative Labs, or the older Live! 5.1. I think they still offer it because they know there are millions of old Dell users out there with this known issue. Seems to affect some with the AMD bother boards too. See other reviews.

Hope this helps someone avoid the 40+ hours I invested in getting my system back to where it was before I inserted the card.

By the way, if you have a nice, new system- like less than a year old- then by all means buy this card- it's awesome.
12 NOT FOR HOME THEATRE
Boy I should have read the reviews before buying this product. Although it says 5.1/6.1, when you use their Digital out to a coaxial input on a receiver, you get 2.1, left and right speakers. Its not true 5.1.

Luckily I have got an RA to return this, and my search for a real audio card with optical out continues.

I would buy the Sound Blaster ZS Platinum which looks like it has 2 optical outs, but a) it seems like over kill, b) i believe their are products that can achieve what i want for less than $170 and c) I dont think i can trust creative lab anymore.
13 excellent card - in Dad's machine
I personslly have the extreme series and what can I say other than it's the best card I have ever had. That was an upgrade from the Sound Blaster Live which is also an excellent card. My dad got a little jealous when i got my audigy 2 card so he went out and picked up the Audigy zs card and then hooked up his smaller Boston Accoustic speakers that he had for rear surround sound in his den and all I can really say is WOW. I have never heard a computer sound so great in my entire life. He made me so jealous that I am going to hook up my rear Bose Speakers and get another two pair, one more set for the rear channel on my computer and another set to replace the rears on my home stereo!
All of the Creative line for sound cards is great. If you don't want to spend much, get the Sound Blaster Live card, if you want to spend a medium amount get the Audigy 1 ZS series, and if you want the best, then get the Platinum Ex card.
I can guarantee that none of them will disappoint.
14 nice sound, nice price
I got this card a long time ago and could tell a major increase in my audio quality when I had my 5.1 high end speakers plugged in, but ultimitely you need nice speakers to experience the full potential of this card. It has no 5.25 inch bay adaptor like the Platinum does, and although it is old, it is the best for when you have a tight budget.
15 Underimpressed!
The following is an email sent to Creative Tech Support over three weeks ago. They have not replied so I am writing reviews as I told them I would. (Problem 3 below was somehow resolved after unchecking Synchronize with Control Panel in Speaker Settings and then rechecking it several days later.) My system is a Dell Dimension 8300, P4 2.6 GHz, 512 MB ram, nVidia GeForce FX 5200 video, 5.1 speakers, Windows XP.

I have over 20 years experience with PCs and I have been a studious learner during that time. I have installed many peripherals and add-ons in my own and machines belonging to others. But I have never had as many problems installing any of them as with this sound card, even in the days before plug and play!

I have installed the programs and drivers along with updates from your web site three times now because of various problems. The last installation changed my nVidia display card settings which caused a greenish monochrome color in DVD movies, but I reset them back. After much work I now have the most trouble free installation so far. The following problems remain however.

1. Opening THX Console resets the speaker level settings under the advanced tab of Surround Mixer and opening other settings programs causes those in THX Console to change. Prior installations also caused settings in EAX Console to change. Apparently one can use either THX Console and not the others, or the others can be used but not THX Console. Seems to me your documentation needs a better explanation of the interactions between these three programs and Speaker Settings and how to use them together.

2. When using SPDIF output from my DVD player application, some sounds aren't played during initial screens, menus and credits and there are occasional skips and faltering as some movies start playing. But playback of the same DVD is perfect when I set the application to decode sound rather than send it to the card to decode.

3. Volume of CD and DVD playback is controlled by the Wave slider in Surround Mixer instead of the CD Audio slider when digital output is enabled for the DVD player in Device Manager (the digital cable isn't connected between the card and the player). So my DVD player resets the wave playback volume high when it is started, and I then get blasted when a true wave file is played, if Synchronize with Control Panel is checked in Speaker Settings and I forget to lower wave volume after a DVD. Your documentation may also need more explanation of this to prevent confusion and endless experimenting.

Any help you can give will be appreciated. I am about ready to pull the card, revert back to the onboard sound, and start writing some bad reviews on web sites, which I have done only once before.

I frankly don't see how an average user could be satisfied with this card unless they are oblivious to its problems.

P.S. The card is installed in a Dell Dimension 8300 with plenty of resources, and I could find no info on your site that recommends a bios update as for some earlier Dell units. I have tried installing the card in two different slots in the computer. The card shares an IRQ with a USB Universal Host Controller. No other resources are shared.

16 Fine for PC speaker setup - Not for PC Home Theater
I recently connected my PC to my TV. (They are in 2 different rooms). The video runs via (5m) DVI cable and I was looking for a good way to connect the audio to the receiver-driven home theater 5.1 speakers. Silly me for thinking that a digital coaxial out from this card could simply plug into coax in on receiver and Dolby coding etc. would be recognized. (SEE other review regarding this below). So, after purchasing a 25' coax cable and miniplug connector, I was extremely disappointed NOT to have true 5.1 digital sound from my speakers.

Basically, I will have to run a bunch of (looong) analog connecting RCA cables to my receiver, instead of 1 digital coax - what a pain! Not to mention the headphone BS also mentioned.

Seems like they overlooked some very basic things with this card and focused on the the processing...

17 No earphone internal connector !!
What's the use of a sound card that has no internal earphone jack? My case (Antec P-160 bought here in Amazon) has an earphone jack in the front panel and I need an internal earphone connector from the sound card to connect to the front panel of the case, but this card, despite all the fuss about it, has none. To be able to get one, you need to spend tens of dollars more to get the so-called hub, that I dont want because it makes the product more expensive and requires a 5 pol. slot from the case (besides, I already have the front panel from the case itself). It's an absurd, I don't want to have to make a hack from the connectors in the bracket just to get an earphone jack. I'm returning this product and I will stay away from Sound Blaster products for as long as I can.
18 Outstanding performance, but something you should know.
First, the something you should know. If you are upgrading from a previous Sound Blaster card you will need to completely uninstall this card, the drivers and all files related to it. The Sound Blaster website has a very clear cut article on how to do this. If you do not completely uninstall your previous card this new one will have conflicts and lock your computer up. Also you will need to download the newest updates for the card and make sure your BIOS is updated (something you probably need to do anyway.) The process took about 45 min but once it was done this card absolutely rocks!!!

And now the performance. If this is your first plunge into the whole THX/true Dolby surround sound experience on your computer you won't regret buying this card. Since installing this card I have replayed Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, URU and other games and it's a whole new experience. With my 5.1 surround sound speakers the sound was crisp, clear and definately worth the $85.00. I am not a hardcore "tech guru" so I can't get into the serious stuff that some of the other people here have: They seem to have done a good job with those reviews, so I'll leave it at that. But if you are looking for great surround sound and don't want to spend loads of money this card is for you.

19 Audigy 2 ZS questions answered...
This is going to be a long review because I just purchased this and I want to answer some questions that I couldn't find answers to before I purchased it. If you want the 1 word summary, it's "INCREADIBLE"!!

I was upgrading from a Fortissimo 1 sound card. I understand that this is not a great card, however I was using the optical out to connect to a DTS receiver. Essentially the sound card was doing nothing but transferring data and my nice receiver was doing all of the work. This made me apprehensive about upgrading to the Audigy 2 because I wasn't sure if I would notice a difference from my optical card. (pause for a quick side note) You can NOT hook this card up digitally to a receiver. I LOVE this card, but I feel this is important for customers to understand this fact, and very deceiving from Creative. The digital output on the card uses a proprietary digital signal. For the techs out there, a normal (electrical not optical) digital signal is a sine wave. The crest of the wave registers as "on" and the bottom of the wave registers as "off". The creative digital-out uses 8 points on the sine wave to create the signal. 1 point for each audio channel. This will only work with computer speaker sets designed for this type of proprietary signal. It will not work with home theatre receivers because it is not a standard digital signal. (now back to my review) With the Audigy 2 ZS I would need to hook everything up using analog THX certified monster cables. Essentially it boils down to weather my receiver will sound better decoding the digital signal (old card), or if the Audigy 2 ZS will sound better decoding the signal and then passing it to the receiver for amplification. I honestly could not be happier with the results. The Audigy 2 ZS sounds 10 times better than my old setup. Everything is MUCH more crisp and well defined, and the low end sounds AMAZING. I'm not talking loud bass, I'm just talking really really tight and smooth. I could not recommend this card more. It is THE BEST upgrade I have made to my PC in years.

I also wanted to touch a bit on the setup, because I couldn't find any reviews anywhere that explained how to hook up the analog outs to a home theatre receiver, and Creative made it a little tricky. First, the 8 channels use only 3 mini plugs as connectors. How you ask? The first connector is an easy to find cable. It's a mini -> 2 RCA. This is the same cable you use to hook a Discman up to your receiver. The other 2 are weird. They are mini -> 3 RCA. The only use I've ever seen for a cable like this is hooking up a DV camcorder to a TV. If you are using monster it is called a CAMAV cable. The first plug feeds your front right and front left speakers. The second plug feeds you rear left, rear right, and side left speakers. The third plug feeds your side right, center, and sub speakers. I could not find that info anywhere before buying and experimenting. I use a double receiver setup with two 5.1 receivers. The second receiver has some unused channels, so later I can expand as far as 10.2. I highly recommend this setup.

I also HIGHLY recommend this card. Like I said before, I am blown away by the sound quality. I've never heard a computer sound so good.

20 Best Soundcard Out There
They say that the quality of onboard sound has improved to the point where buying PCI soundcards is unnecessary, but this card proves them wrong. If you have a nice set of speakers, this card is an absolute necessity. The quality of the sound is superb, and the software packaged with it gives you all sorts of nice options to tinker around with the settings. Also, if you play video games, the EAX is really noticible and significantly improves the overall gaming atmosphere.
21 More Boom for your Buck....
I bought this card as an upgrade for my default Dell system, having done a little shopping around for a good deal. I was attracted to this card for several reasons - A) It supports 5.1 surround sound (just got some new shiny speakers to play with y'see), B) I trust Creative to make a reliable and compatible product, since I'm not a computer whiz, and I don't have the time or experience to reconfigure stuff just to get it to work, and C) The price is just about right.

Installation was a breeze - like always just follow the instructions carefully and make sure everything is connected before you close the case - this model comes with a separate cable to link the sound card to the digital port on the CD drive. My XP system detected everything right away, and the software installed without a hitch. There's a few different programs bundled with the card, including EAX, THX and speaker configuration support, all of which is nicely presented and was helpful when setting up my speakers. The 5.1 surround support is just as groovy as I'd hoped, and the card software made it a breeze to adjust the levels, configure Winamp 5 to play through all the channels, and add funky effects. I don't really have much use for all the software included, but I can imagine if you were starting from scratch, or, conversely, quite an advanced user, you might enjoy the various different functions included here. I'm a bit middle-of-the-road to need all the bells and whistles, but I appreciate them being there.

So, easy to setup, easy to use, simmering with latent power and nicely priced. I admit that I was also persuaded to get this card for secret reason D) It came bundled with Raven Shield (and Angel of Darkness, but I'm treating that as a fancy test for my speakers rather than a `real' game...I'm such a snob) which sounds awesome through this card. A great buy for a lower end user who wants to ramp-up their audio experience without breaking the bank (or an eardrum). Recommended.

22 Awesome sound!
It's amazing the difference in sound that this gives me over the little onboard sound device I had. Yeah, I know, can't really compare the two, but if you want nice, clear sound for a good price, go with this soundcard. It's worth every penny!
23 Hell from the start
Creative Labs, the name instantly makes you think of a company that produces quality sound cards, speakers and other periperhals. In the past I have had success with them, but this time, everything went all so very wrong.

I have a Athlon XP Asus Motherboard that runs at 2GHZ. 256mb or ram, ATI video card, etc. I have heard numeral issues regarding buggy software drivers with ASUS and ATI...

From the start it was hell. Installation was a breeze, but soon it began to stress harm on my computer, constantly freezing it up. I had to uninstall the drivers in safe mode and all was fine.

Not giving up, I installed the drivers again, same results.

If the third time is suppose to be the charm, remind me that 2 strikes and your out. Third time, The sound blaster 2 zs slammed my computer, and to this day it will not finish it's post test.

Creative Labs tech support is merely a copy and paste to our webpage link solution. Although they were prompt.

If in the end I can't get my computer back, I'll rebuild WITHOUT Creative Labs. Only if you have the latest top of the line system or just looking for a guniea pig of a sound card, then by all means go with this one, else stay far away.

24 Best Card Yet!
I got the 2Zs for gaming, and DVD's, but mostly for MP3's. I have heard others complain of install problems, noise etc. I have found not a single problem in any case. I installed the software then went to Creative.com and downloaded the latest baba booey drivers. I am running XP home, 768 RAM, with a 1.6 P4 processor and the software runs great, though there are alot of differnt settings which can get confusing. If not using digital out, remeber to turn off this, as the speakers will produce no sounds. Good stuff, also came with the new Tomb Raider and Rainbow Six 3. Very prompt Amazon.com shipping.
25 Impressive sounding but buggy
I purchased this card for the purpose of home recording and gaming, and was immediately blown away by the quality of the sound. However, after only five minutes of using the card, I started having problems with certain applications. Winamp2, for example, would spontaniously become silent while playing files, the music would spontaniously disappear from games (even EAX games) and sometimes creative's music player would malfunction. Tech support didn't have any suggestions, and the support section of Creative's website for this card was almost humorously empty. I am still using Windows 98, so I expect XP users won't have many problems, but even so, I was disappointed by the hassles.
