The D-Link three-port FireWire adapter is an IEEE 1394-compliant high-performance serial bus adapter card with a PCI 2.2 interface that provides three external ports for easily connecting peripherals to your PC. Supplying power to any attached IEEE 1394 peripheral, device, or hub, this adapter allows bus-powered devices to operate without the need of an external power adapter. With serial bus data transfer rates of up to 400 Mbps, the adapter ensures flexible, high-speed support for scanners, hard drives, printers, and multimedia devices such as IEEE 1394-compatible TVs, VCRs, DVD players, and digital camcorders. Bundled with digital video-editing software, the adapter provides an out-of-the-box solution for home video editing. Simply upload digital information from a camcorder to your PC, edit it, and then download it to an IEEE 1394-enabled VCR.
With convenient plug-and-play installation, automatic driver location, and automatic device configuration, this adapter card is easy to use and comes with a one-year warranty.
1 It works, I guess....
I got this in hopes of turning my PC and digital camcorder into a movie studio. It was easy enough to install I suppose, and it actually works I think because some images from my camcorder DID actually make it to the monitor. However, I was never able to do more than that with this product. I don't think there is something inherently wrong with it, but PCs, at least not highly up to date ones, are just not very compatible with Firewire. I guess I could have spent more time on this and perhaps actually accomplished something. It was just too tedious and not worth it. My brothers IMAC works brilliantly with Firewire, and I would recommend you get a Mac if you want to make movies.
2 Very affordable and easy installation
Dell Dimension 4500 running Windows XP with a Panasonic DV-400 camcorder. When I first plugged the card in, XP didn't see it. I ended up swapping to another slot and it immediately recognized the new hardware and installed it automatically. Was capturing video in under 20 minutes total! So far I have just used XP MovieMaker because the included software doesn't seem very intuitive.
3 D-Link Firewire Card + WIN98SE PC + iPod = Tunes-to-go
I put this DFW-500 FireWire PCI card in my 4.5 year old Windows 98 SE PC and XPlay software let's me put my MP3s on my iPod. It took some work. This is, after all, making enemies live/work together in harmony. Not recommended for rank beginners, the getting-a-PC-to-see-the-iPod part. The FireWire card installation was easy.
4 DONT BUY THIS JUNK
I have a new gateway machine- I bought the card from gateway and with the card installed the computer will not shut down or sleep. Initially the computer wouldn't shut down or sleep but flashing the BIOS and updating the Intel chipset drivers and changing settings in the BIOS now lets the machine be shut down. Still can't sleep though and neither will you!
D-Link has NO support and even thought this is a widespread problem with this card you will find no mentionn or help for this problem.
5 Easy. Cheap.
Dell Dimension 8200 running Windows XP. Using a Canon ZR45. Opened the case, put in the card, closed the case, plugged in the camcorder (turned on), turned on the computer and started capturing video. Easy.
6 Worked right out of the box, Software was helpful
I've been buying D-Link products for many years. Years ago, when they first hit the scene it was because of their cut-rate prices on network cards and hubs.
As their reputation for reliable products grew, so did my trust, and I started to buy their products regardless of price. As such, when I needed a Firewire card, I went with D-Link because of their reputation for reliability.
As far as I'm concerned, the best support advice I can give you is to check for compatibility before you purchase. If you are running a version of Windows that is not listed in the description, check with D-Link's website in advace to see if they have an updated driver. If you can't find the driver before the purchase, look for another card.
In my case, the card was directly supported by my version of Windows, so there was no trouble getting it to run. It used the built-in Microsoft driver.
7 should be called firestarter card
This card fried 2 motherboards - the first, after I tried to install it myself, and the second after the computer shop technician tried. The tech actually noticed smoke coming out of the computer. A call to D-Linktech support revealed (surprise) that "our card doesn't do that." My next call is to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Stay away from this product!
8 worthless card - basically no tech support
I bought this card with the assumption that it would be no problem. However when I installed it Windows XP detects it as a PRINTER!! I ran through the hardware wizard over and over using different drivers recommended by D-Link with no success. I emailed D-Link for help and all they could tell me was to contact Microsoft. ... What a waste!
9 Perfect
Just perfect for my need. It's not only affordable but also useful like those expensive ones. When it arrived, I easily installed it myself even though I don't know about computer hardwares. No problem with the software, windows xp captures it.
Thanks Jude!
10 It just doesn't work!
I have several different brand 1394 cards for my business; The D-Link is one I brought for my personal use. It is terrible! It is slow, it often looses connections, and it doesn't work with certain devices.
Just to make sure I didn't have a bad unit, I switched it out with second one. It unit didn't work either. I have several of them and they all have the same horrible functionality. Buy an Adaptec or a PYRO, or a SIIG. They are far superior!
11 Fire ware adapter for DCR tRV 130
I am looking for the PC card and Sofware for the DCRTRV 130 Handy cam which could help for conversion of Camcorder recorded video to a PC format.. i need help in looking for the right software...is it called the fire ware adapter card..or..?
12 Easy to Install and Priced Right
I have an Athlon 800 on an Asus MB home built running Win2k. I popped the card in and powered up. There was a short message on the BIOS screen and Windows started. Since no dialog boxes appeared, I thought that the card didn't install, but looking at devices, there it was, running normally! I plugged in my scanner and everything worked fine.
I comes with a 6 to 4 pin firewire, so if you're hooking up printers or scanners, be sure to order a 6 to 6 pin cable.
Painless install, good price makes a great product!
13 Best price to quality!
No problem, just plug and play, no drivers, no crashes. And it includes a firewire cable!. Excelent for Premiere, Ulead and Avid DV Xpress. Why pay more?
14 Works Great
I don't think you can find a better value. The price could easily be spent on just the cable. Using a Dell 8200 with XP, I had no problem with the installation or use.
15 good
It's good and easy to set up for windows 98 SE.
On the manual, it said that this card only connect for 63 digital devices. And on the list i can't find my digital camcorder(Sharp VLWD450U). But it still works cool and easy to transfer my video to the computer.
The software is a little bug. When i want to transfer from avi to rm, it didn't work. I think may because the software is ulead version 4.0.
Also, it includes the IEEE1394 cable, cool!
16 Works like a charm
The card worked great but the software included for capture [stunk]. I think it's the same with all cards, they always give you the ... software for free. In this case, it was the Ulead Video Studio software, but the 'SE' version, not the good stuff.
But as for the card, I just put it in, booted back to Windows XP, it detectd the card and away I went. I didn't even need to give it my driver CD.
Since it included a firewire cable, I didn't have to purchase one either.
17 Utterly Worthless Card
I have tried two of these cards from Amazon, and neither has worked with my Dell 8100 running Windows 2000. Eventually, not having endless time to resolve the problems, and getting sluggish and frankly useless tech-support from DLink via their website, I gave up and am getting a refund.
Don't waste your time on this worthless piece of junk.
18 Don't buy this for Win98
I suspect this product cannot be made to work for Win98 first edition. I've tried every set of drivers DLINK has recommended including the ones for Win98 first edition located on their FTP server.
I'd give the product more stars if they stopped advertising that it works with Win98. I'm not the only Win98 customer that has complained about this.
19 Won't work with iPod
The card installs quickly right out of the box and Windows 2000
recognized it without loading any other drivers.
Unfortunately, the TI chipset used in these cards seems to have
some issues identifying the iPod player. The exact error message
is that the device failed to start and I get a Code 10 error.
So, even though this may be a great card, I'm sending mine back
20 Easy to set-up and use.
I was saving video to my hard drive and editing it 45 minutes after popping open the box on this card.
The card comes with a 6 to 4 pin Firewire cable, so no need to purchase one seperately (like I did not knowing that).
Manual is fine. Installation was easy (I have installed cards before though - not sure how easy the installation would be for someone who has never opened their computer's case before).
Software that comes with it did not work on Windows ME for me (even though the software's site says no problems are reported), but I'm using Windows Movie Maker and that's working fine for now.
21 Does not work with W98 SE either
I have windowns 98SE. After I install this card,
the computer will not shutdown. Doing shutdown, will only
cause the computer to reboot, have to unplug cord to power off.
22 Works Perfectly Under XP
Plugged the card in and XP did the rest. I connect a Canon ZR25 camcorder to the firewire and works perfectly. The card is definitely OHCI compliant which is required for video editing software.
23 Firewire
I have an HP, with a W2000 operating system, and the card worked great with my Yamaha CD burner. The software required for the Firewire card was included in the W2000 OS, so you should be able to install the card and fire it up after restart.
24 Does not work with Windows 98
When I called tech support after I couldn't make it work, they said I need 98 SE. I chose this card because the tech data lists win 98, 98 SE, 2000.
25 Great Card
This card works very well with our Sony DCR-PC110 digital video camera. I had no problems downloading video into the movie maker software that comes with WindowsME and editing a few clips together. I haven't spent a lot of time playing with it, but it has worked flawlessly for us so far.
26 Good product, but...
but in the wonderful world of Windows, you're going to run into compatibility issues now and then. Best to just get a Mac, on which IEEE 1394 is a standard, and is the fastest, easiest way to have serious fun with digital video, audio, web, etc. etc.
27 What a piece of crap!
Who would I recommend this product to? Windows 98 users who won't be upgrading to ME.
The product will not work with Windows ME, period. I called tech support, there was nothing they could do. There are NO drivers available for this product on Windows ME. If you trying installing the drivers, it will freeze your pc every time you turn on your dv camcorder. I recommend Windows ME users do NOT buy this device, as D-LINK corp obviously DOES NOT care at all about their customers using a more recent version of Windows.
I certainly thought I was getting a bargain deal when buying this from Amazon.Com. Boy was I wrong!
28 didn't work under windows 2000
Installations did not go as the instructions dictated. IT didn't work with my western digital firewire drive. I have emailed their support and waited on phone hold. They never emailed me back and I got sick of being on hold.
29 Forget it with Windows ME
I just received this card and was very excited about it. After 4+ hours of calls to D-Link, Dell, and Microsoft, noone can help me install it so that all the DLL files are actually found.
I give up...returns here we come.
30 Easy as Pie
It wasn't very hard to install this card. Actually it was very simple. It is just like most other PCI cards. Just open up your case insert it into a free PCI slot and close the case back up. Then when you reboot your computer just install the drivers from the software D-Link gives you.
BOTTOMLINE: Everything worked fine and I am now able to edit my digital video fater than ever with this new firewire access.
