1 Worked great on first try... 5 minute setup
I dont know why so many people are having problems with this adapter. It worked like a charm on the first try. I am currently using my playstatin online and it works like a charm. i also have a wirelss network with all D-Link components installed in my house so this could have possibly facilitated my installation. I highly recommend this product to anyone looking to connect their ps2 online wirelessly. I couldnt really justify spending the extra $20 something dollars on the wireless g bridge because online games on the ps2 do not really take up too much bandwith. I am satisfied with this purchase and am going to attempt to hookup the playstation directly to my router to see if their is a speed difference sometime in the near future. I will keep you informed...
2 Worked Like a Dream
It was kind of hazy at first but when I figure out to change the subnet it worked as expected. I hooked it up to my PS2 and was gaming in minutes. I've even used it for my MP3 music network.
My only problem( And the reason I didn't give it the 5th star) is the problems I had with the range in my house. I've got an old house with lots of walls between my wireless router and where I wanted my access point to go. I'm using a Trendnet TEW-311BRP wireless router. When I put the access point in the basement I could not get a reliable signal. I've had other wireless devices( ie a laptop) down there and they work fine. To make the 810+ work I needed to buy a booster antenna. It was $20. But still cheaper then switching to G or spending $60 on an range extended( Which I did but returned)
3 if there was only a 0-star rating
DO NOT BUY THIS! I am a proud owner of several good products from dlink. I am a not so proud owner of 3 bad 810+'s. The first one configured fine. I decided to upgrade the firmware on it, and it crahed, not taking any firmware. OK every once in a while you get a bad one, so I returned it for a second one. That one crashed when trying to apply my wep key. It wouldn't take any firmware after a reset. Begrudgingly I recieved a third one. Again, while entering my wep key it crashed and wouldn't take firmware. I spoke to level 1 and 2 tech support from dlink. They then passed me on to an engineer in their engineering dept. Nobody could explain why this kept crashing. User error was eliminated, I work in IT and this is an easy piece to configure, far from my first. Other bad hardware on my side was elininated because the third one was configured on a different pc, different cat 5 different nic, etc. It is a bad piece of equipment and I will be getting a linksys very soon.
4 Disappointment >:-(
Despite what the box and description say this is not an easy to setup product that isn't at all easy even with sufficient networking experience. Just the simple task of allowing your computer to communicate with the darn thing, which involves an annoying change to tcp/ip settings because it does not support Dynamic Host configuration.
Anyone looking for help from the manuals may as well forget it, this is one of the worst documented electronics I have ever seen, and even the PDF manuals that are stored on the included CD are useless.
Anyone who wants to use this thing with an encrypted network has got even more headaches to come as this is virtually undocumented altogether and painfully requires the user to insert all encryption key values manually, without the use of a hex generator. Frequently when accessing the Web browser setup the unit locks up, forcing total resets, restoring its memory to factory settings requiring all information to be re-entered.
After hours of work I still couldn't get the frustrating thing to speak to my Belkin Router. I arranged to return it for a refund the following morning!!
This is a poor product, and I do not recommend it!!
This is the first consumer product I have used from D-link and there is a good chance that it may be the last.
This was a complete waste of my time.
5 can you connect this to a hub
Why can't someone state definitely that this can be connected to a hub to bridge multiple devices simultaneously
6 Worked out of the box
This bridge worked great right out of the box and synched with the D-link AirPlus Router immediately. And contrary to one review, you can use this bridge with a hub to connect an established wired network, just make sure that if you have mac filtering on that you include the mac addresses of all the computers on the hub. I use this in a home network and haven't had any problems so far.
My only complaint is the user interface isn't as user friendly as it should be, and for the average user who wants to set up security, it may throw them off a little.
7 Works Nicely with XBOX
Works well with my XBOX and D-Link router which is approximately 50 feet and 2 walls away. Did not notice any lag during game play. One problem I had was configuring it via a laptop, I spent over an hour trying to make the bridge connect to the router with no success. When I tried the same by connecting the bridge to my desktop everything configured perfectly right away.
8 It worked on the second try...
Network hardware advertisements are chock full of plug and play claims. In most cases things come up automatically only in a perfect network. And any time you are trying to integrate a Playstation 2 into a mixed Mac and PC wireless network you are far from perfect.
After one struggle with the game connector created by the company that made all of the other non-Mac parts of my network, I was completely sure that my PS-2 was never going to see my cable connection in a million years. That one didn't do what it said it would do, took inordinate amounts of setup time and still didn't work right.
Sheer stubbornness convinced me to try an ethernet bridge as a second effort. I selected this D-link model, brought it up and, despite happily winking lights, refused to talk to anything - no matter what I plugged it into. Fearing I was facing the same insurmountable difficulty I relented, and read the manual.
Well, duh!! in about 10 minutes I discovered that the 810+ was using 192.168.0.30 as an address, and my subnet was set up for 192.168.1.x as the subnet. Using my portable, I disabled DHCP, changed the subnet and linked it directly to the 810+. Much to my surprise and delight, there was the administration screen, and I promptly changed the 810+'s subnet. I returned the portable to DHCP, reset the network (and detached the 810+, and there it was, live on the line.
The 810+ may be a bit cheaply made for it's price, but the simple fact is that I did get it to work with only a moderate amount of effort. It has a good management console built right in, a straightforward manual on CD and, above all, it does the job.
9 DWL-810+ WEP does not work with Netgear WAP
After hours on the phone with "level 1" and "level 2" support (none of which spoke English as their first language), upgrading and downgrading firmware, going over and over the setup with every new person I talked to, I was told that I could either just use the 810+ without WEP or return it to get my money back. It didn't seem to matter that my DLink DWL-520 card worked fine with the Netgear with the same WEP settings, as did an Orinoco card; they said they "weren't sure it was a problem with the 810, or if a firmware update will ever be available to address it". Guess I'll be getting my money back, rather than running my WAP without any security.
10 Powerful Small Bridge that Actually Works!
I tried a different brand of wireless bridge and it didn't work from out of the box, so I returned it, I wont mention the name though because it could have been just a plain dead unit and all companies are guilty of having a couple bad apples.
So I went out and bought this D-Link bridge right away and I have to say it works great. The smartest thing to do is to plug it into your wired network with the ethernet cable and access the admin pages through a web browser. After that upgrade the firmware and set it up so it will communicate with your wireless network, (ie. SSID, WEP key, channel, etc.). After configuring it you can unplug it from the router and plug it into your PS2/XBox/Tivo/whatever has an ethernet port you want connected to your network. It is as easy as that.
11 Support is comical
I bought D-Links bridge to hook up my Sony Playstation 2 to the internet. I have a wireless network with a Netgear Router. I hooked up the Playstation fine with and the bridge and was trying to talk with the wireless network, but couldn't get them to connect. I called technical support and, while on hold, kept trying to get the bridge and the network top connect. I am a computer programmer, but haven't worked on networks to much. After around 2 hours of trial and error, I realized that the bridge wouldn't configure through the internet, as stated in the instructions. By the way, I'M STILL ON HOLD! The IP addresses were correct (192.168.0.3), but the configuration wasn't. I went to the Paystation and manually entered all of the IP addresses (instead of letting the system do it automatically). Also, the router required the DHCP name which was the default of 192.168.0.1. Putting in the DHCP name was the ticket and fixed the problem. I can't still log onto the bridge from my web browser and I haven't played a game yet, but it does connect and I am definitely on line. After 3 hours of getting the problem solved, I hung up on technical support. They never even came on the line. They let a customer wait for 3 hours! I WILL NEVER BUY FROM D-LINK AGAIN!
I think there is some truth to buying the same company's router, bridge, wireless cards, etc. The manuals seem to be clearer as well and refer to their other devices. If you don't, I think it is a 50/50 shot of getting it to work. Unless you are experienced in working with networks, don't buy from D-LINK, because the technical support doesn't answer, literaly.
12 SIMPLY THE BEST
THIS PRODUCT IS GREAT!! ONE SMALL LITTLE PROBLEM, WHICH I WILL TALK ABOPUT NOW. AS SOON AS YOU GET IT, HOOK IT UP TO A FREE PORT ON YOUR ROUTER, AND DOWNLOAD THE UPDATED FIRMWARE SOFTWARE FROM DLINKS WEBSITE. THEN LEAVE IT PLUUGED IT, AND COMPLETE THE SIMPLE CONFIG WIZARD. THATS IT, THEN YOU CAN USE IT. IT WOULD BE NICE IF IT CAME WITH THE UPDATED SOFTWARE (I THINK THE CURRENT SOFTWARE ONLY WORKS WITH DLINK ROUTERS) AFTER YOU GET AROUND THIS, YOU CAN PLAY PLAYSTATION ALL NIGHT ONLINE WITH PEOPLE FROM HALFWAY AROUND THE WORLD, COOL!
13 Connects my Game Consoles Wirelessly
My entertainment center has this wireless adapter hooked up to a switch and my PS2 and XBOX are hooked into that switch. It was easy to setup and works excellently from downstairs while my DI-614+ is upstairs. No lag, easy connections, and zero maintinence.
14 Compatibility problems
From the description, it sounds like you can configure it from any computer simply via a web browser interface and then connect to your wireless network. I bought it so I can connect my old Mac G3 (OS 8.6) to a wireless network. However, getting it set up with Internet Explorer (Mac) has proved to be difficult. First, although I can access the DWL-810+ via the browser, the wizard that should take you through the set up does not work. If instead I use the manual interface, when you try to enter a WEP key for an encrypted network, it fails to accept it and comes back with an error in accessing the DWL-810+. And these are the problems I found upon trying a simple set-up; there may be others. Thus, I am very disappointed in its compatibility with Macintosh; it is not a simple browser-complaint device for setting up.
15 Gets My PS2 Online
I have this hooked up to my PS2 and I can play Everquest all day long eventhough my PS2 is downstairs and my wireless router and cable modem is upstairs. Overall this has been easy to use and hasn't given me any problems.
Once it has been configured correctly I've been able to just plug it into anything (PS2, another PC, any Ethernet enabled device) and it connects right away with no prblems.
Speeds are fast and range is good. I like it and think it is a good investment for connectivity.
16 Owned one momentarily. Glad it's gone.
Out of box, it required a firmware upgrade to be configured with any browser other than Internet Explorer. Not a pleasant start.
After configuration, caused packet chorusing on my 802.11b ad-hoc network. Ping it, get 1, 2 or 10 packets returned. Not good.
And the connection losses... let it idle for awhile, and the connection dropped, requiring power cycle to restore operation.
Buy the Linksys WET11 instead. I returned the D-Link, bought the Linksys, and left the problems behind.
17 I GOT CONNECTED!!
I am sooo happy to be online with my PS2. This rules!
All I had to do was follow the instructions.
What a concept huh?
Seriously though I can't get enough online play. Plus I didn't have to get a 100ft Cat5 cable and drag it one side and down the other in my apartment. Seriously who has their PS2 close to their cable modem and router? Nobody. That's why this 810+ bridge and my 614+ router/wireless thingy make online play possible. I feel like this is magic.
This was easy to get working and nobody should have a problem if they know how to read and follow instructions.
18 Bridges Multiple Devices Just Fine.
I don't know what other people have problems with, but I can plug this into a 5-port switch and it connects everything on that switch to the network wirelessly.
I have my xbox and my PS2 hooked up to a switch with the 810+ plugged into it and I can play online with the xbox or ps2 without switching wires around and everything works fine.
Setup was real easy, and it needs zero maintinence afterwards.
19 Bridges ONLY one device, not a LAN...
Most people won't care, but while this device works great to connect a single pc or laptop, you can't plug it into a hub/switch and bridge a whole lan segment. Pick the slightly more expensive linksys WET11 to do that!
20 I'm Speechless!
I bought this product so I could play PS2 online with a wireless connection. when it was time to set it up i just followed the directions and within under 5 minutes it was set up and working great! I give it my highest reccomendation.
21 Excellent Product!
I currently use this product with D-Link's Airplus wireless router (DI-614+) to allow my gaming consoles to go online wirelessly. I also have 2 PCs connected to the router with ethernet cables.
Needless to say, after taking about a minute to update the bridge's firmware (to 1.3), I was online in seconds. It truly is plug and play ready!
The unit is small, portable (for those wireless LAN partys), and works like a charm. My bridge is about 80 feet away from my router and I get no loss in reception, even with cell phones and cordless phones on simultaneously!
My only concerns are that the Power and Act lights are a little too bright and may distract some players who may be placing the bridge by their TVs; and if you don't own a D-Link router, the firmware updating process will take a few more mintues because you will have to set up a static IP for your router. The update is required to use the bridge with Xbox Live.
Otherwise I have to hand it to D-Link for creating an excellent product for those people who want to go online wirelessly with their gaming consoles, but don't want to drag a huge ethernet cable from one room to another.
22 D-Link bridge
So far I have had no problems with the bridge. It was actually very easy to set up. I do recommend buying the same company's router just because I think that might of made configuring the bridge a little easier, but overall I'm happy with the bridge.
23 One tough little Wireless Bridge!!
I have this hooked up to a switch in my basement and it recieves signal from my DWL-800AP+ which repeats the signal of my DI-614+ and everything works great.
I can play with my PS2, or Xbox online and everything works great. Xbox live works great with no lags on my half, and setup was super easy.
Setting this up was almost easier than any other networking product I've ever setup. All I had to do was plug it into the switch, and access the web interface via Internet Explorer with a computer that is hooked up to the switch. Then I changed the SSID, the mode, and WEP. After that I've never touched it.
Works great and never had problems. Highly recommended. A++
24 Friend of mine has this ...
and it works great for his Playstation 2. he just had to plug it in and it was working. He seriously didn't have to make any changes to the hardware's configuration to get it to connect. I am not sure why it works this way, but it did. I went over to help him set it up and by the time I got to his house, he already had it set up.
The gameplay is just like if it was wired. Nice and fast!
25 Imcompatible with Dlink 1000AP
This DWL810+ is cheap in price but poor in
compatibility. I tried it with my Dlink 1000AP
and it does NOT work at all.
The datasheet does not inform buyers of compatibility
problem.
Dlink tech support had no clue about this problem
in their database.
I feel like I am beta testing a product for Dlink.
I am returning this product today.
26 Fast Throughput - Simple Setup - Easy Implementation
I was able to set this up to convert my Desktop PC into a Wireless conenction in about 5 minutes. Just plug it into your Ethernet card in the PC and type in the IP in internet explorer. Then the configuration screen pops up and you configure it to connect to your wireless network (WEP, SSID, channel, and that's it.). After that you are connected wirelessly to your network and it's just like you are wired except no wires to trip over.
Sometimes I will connect it to my XBOX so I can play online, but I rarely do that anymore since I don't have much time for my XBOX anymore. :( Configuring it for the XBOX takes no effort at all, it's just a matter of physically plugging it into the XBOX and thats it, since it is already setup.
27 Fast Install
I attached the DL-810+ to my Sony PS2 and had it working in under 15 min. I also have a D-Link wireless router. I beleive this makes a big difference. I had originally purchased the Linksys WET11 and I could not get it to work. I would recommend purchasing the same brand bridge as your router.
