D-Link DCM-200 Cable Modem

Compras Nikon
Bluetooth
The DCM-200 provides customers with high-speed access to the Internet through the cable TV (CATV) network. It works on any cable system that complies with MCNS DOCSIS specifications and provides a high-bandwidth connection to the Internet. It can download Web pages almost instantly, transfers files at exceptionally fast speeds, and delivers real-time video and music with unsurpassed quality. The DCM-200 modem digitizes data and sends it over the cable at up to 10.2 Mbps and can receive transmissions at up to 42.88 Mbps. To give you an idea of just how fast this is, digitized television quality video and audio are transmitted together at about 3 Mbps. The DCM-200 includes both a USB cable interface and a standard RJ-45 port for a 10BaseT connection to a computer or computer network. When properly configured these connections allow simultaneous data transfers to an existing IP data network or the Internet via the cable company's network.
1 Doesn't work when it gets hot
This modem needs extremely good ventilation to work properly. For it to work reliably, I actually had to attach a fan to it. If it gets hot at all it drops the connection and needs to be reset. It works fine when it is cool but I can't keep it cool enough for long enough periods of time.
2 No headache modem
Well, reading most of the reviews, i am pretty surprised that people are having so many problems with this thing. I've had it over a year now of which i used it for about 7 months without a hitch. i disconnected from Adelphia since SBC was giving me a cheaper DSL deal and now Time Warner is rotten enough not to give discount to consumers who own a modem. Anyways, it has been nice to me all along and with easy setup. i bought it for about 35 bucks with discounts and rebates so cannot complain. I'd agree that it needs a restart once in a while but I figure that's the ISP's problem since they don't keep connections live after some days and reset it or something.
3 surprised by failure
I had this modem for over 2 years and had only minor problems such as the need to reboot at least once a week to clear out errors from the buffer. Everything was working fine until last week when it suddenly stopped working. At first I thought it was service interruption so I spent several hours on the phone with my ISP only to figure out that my modem is a problem. The modem acted as if it could not get the signal. After reading some of the horror stories, here at Amazon, related to D-Link's customer service I decided just to throw it away and buy new Motorola Surfboard. Although I don't notice any speed difference with the surfboard, it takes much less time to boot up. Whereas with DCM 200 it took approx. 40 seconds to boot, with my new Motorola it takes no more than 10 seconds. I always thought that D-Link makes good, high quality products but this incident changed my mind. I won't buy another D-link.
4 Good for Short Term
When I first got this modem it worked great, installed easy and had me connected at lightning speeds. After 6-8 months it started messing up. Had to keep restarting it every few weeks until it would "sync" now after 8-10 months it will only stay in sync for a few hours and it is only by pure luck that I get it to work. In fact I am writing this review after spending all day(8+ hours) trying to get it working again. I lost the warranty information so I can't comment on that. But I do not recommend this modem as it doesn't last very long.
5 D-Link Modem and customer service terrible
Purchased original modem from retailer (Best Buy). After three months the modem stopped working. Contacted the company and was told by the D-Link Customer Service Rep. that I didn't buy the modem from the manufacturer so they don't cover it. I finally convinced them that because they make the modem and it is their warranty, they do cover it. D-Link relinquished and sent me a refurbished modem that had screws rattling around the inside upon arrival (obviously it didn't work). Called them back, convinced them to send me another modem. Third modem (another re-furb) arrived and also did not work. Tried to get them to stop sending me re-furbs because they don't work. They refused to send me a NEW cable Modem.

Tech Support will want to call you back because they never seem to be available. However, they expect you sit home all day and wait for their call so you can be by the modem when they do call. I personally never received a promised call from them. I had to call them and wait for a tech support rep to come to the phone. On all three modems THEIR (D-Link) Techies told me the modem was bad. After third inop modem and much complaining, I received a call from a district manager who told me he would send me a fourth modem in two weeks after they did a full warehouse inventory and he would personally test it at home to make sure it worked. That was six months ago, I guess he never found one that worked. So here I am, still no working modem from D-Link and have not heard a word from them.

After the first modem stopped working, the cable service came out and verified it was a bad modem (cost: $100) and not the hook up or their line. I rented a Motorola from the Cable Service as an interim solution. The Motorola has been working perfectly. I am done dealing with D-Link and will chalk this up to experience and just rent the Motorola.

I personally will never buy another D-Link Product. D-Link products are basically the same price as LinkSys but a much more inferior product. My Wireless LAN is also D-Link. It still works but performs fair at best. When I upgrade, I will go with LinkSys.

Good luck with your purchase. I strongly recommend you stay away from D-Link. You will be very disappointed. The company makes an inferior product, and does not support what they produce. As I found out later, their customer service is rated POOR by BBB.

Hope this helps.

6 difficult to get a replacement under warranty
Modem functioned fine for about 10 months; eventually it required daily reboots until it completely failed (would not even attempt to sync w/ cable company). Tech Support / RMA process is poor, requires 2 different calls with almost non-english speaking reps. Replacement also failed and I wonder if they even replaced it or did a bad job of repairing it. In the meantime I have been using a Motorola that functions flawlessly. Please note that DLink has a POOR rating with the the Better Business Bureau. (www.bbb.org).
7 Not good with dlink or linksys wireless routers
I purchased a dlink wireless router to share my internet with other computers. After five calls to dlink tech support they suggested I try a different brand router or different cable modem. So I purchased the linksys router, same problems. Must be this modem. Before trying to use the router I've had good performance with the modem via ethernet. Tried to use the USB option once, couldn't get it to work.
8 D-Link 200 Cable modem
Ordered first modem and it appeared to be opened. Had ISP installer set it up and it failed to work. Had to rent ISP modem. Ordered second D-Link modem and it also failed to work. ...
9 Great buy - Comcast approved
I've been looking for a while for a good deal on a cable modem so that I could stop paying the monthly rental fee. This deal with Amazon.com was the best I've seen and this modem is absolutely great for that price - had no problems at all getting it to work. Just a 15 minute phone call to my cable service provider (Comcast) and I was back browsing on the internet as fast as before. I sent in for my rebate - if I get that, I'd say this was an excellent buy!
Update: My rebate came in about 6 weeks - this truly was a great buy!
10 Dissatisfied.
I think the product i recieved is a refurbished product. not a brand new product. it is opened from inside and nicely package with plastic from outside. there are some scratches on the modem. I am not happy or satisfy with it. however i have no time to return the product and i will bare with this.
11 Excellent Cable Modem
It didn't take me very long to install it. It worked great. The USB Connection works good also. Windows 2000 detected a wrong driver and if you ask the Driver installer to look in the CD for the right driver, it detects the D-Link driver properly and it worked perfectly. An ON/OFF switch in the Cable Modem would have been great...its a great Buy. I have used a Motorola Surfboard cable modem (rented from cable company)earlier...I didn't see much difference in the modem. I have D-Link Wireless router also. It has been great as well
12 Fast and Easy
I have Macs and this little modem was easy to install using ethernet. Just plug it in and call the cable company to register the modem. I have had it for a month and it is working fine.

The price was the best I could find.

13 not reliable
I've bought the MODEM last month, but now it's already broken. when you power up, after 5 minutes the status lights (two green lights in the front) will gone and you cannot make connection at all.
14 Very Un-Impressed
First of all the lights on this modem make very little sense and require you to refer to the manual to decode them. Secondly the manual is terribly unhelpful for trouble shooting. And lastly the modem must lay flat and has no feet for standing on edge like most other modems. I made a big mistake buying this one... I should have stuck with the Surfboard I was renting.
15 Excellent Modem
This modem is a good buy for the price. It installs flawlessly. You do need to call the cable company and register it - takes about 5 minutes. I was up and running in 10 minutes.

17 Not always compatible
I'm with Adelphia and despite the D-Link modem being on the approved list of modems, the local technician states it is always a problem getting this product to recognize their systems. After two weeks of hassle, I'm getting a Motorola.
18 So Far So Good
I just got this modem last week and it's running good.

All I had to do was to call up the cable company and they walked through a webpage set up the new cablemodem. I rebooted and was back online in a flash. The cable company had the DCM-100 on their recommended list (not the 200) but the 200 works just fine. I'm not using the USB version, so I can't comment on that.

This is a great value that will save me money over renting for the long run.

19 They don't stand behind their products...
I give one star because you cannot assign a "zero" star. We purchased the D-Link DCM 200 cable modem to replace the one we were renting (Toshiba PCX 2500) and wanted to use it in a USB port. Well, the DCM was just the start of our woes. After several tries at installation (and literally several HOURS with tech support from our cable company), we were told that we had to use an ethernet connection--which we did not have.
Finally, we installed an ethernet card--only to have failure again. We contacted D-Link; they have a one-year warranty, only they do not provide refunds. They ask that the consumer return the item, and fill out a "cross-shipment agreement" form and include our credit card number. This, I imagine, would ensure the customer would ship the defective merchandise as the replacement is being shipped out. Well, on the form, it states that all returned items are tested. If the item is deemed perfectly functional by D-Link, a 10% restocking fee is assessed to the customer's credit card! You have to read this on their Web site to believe it! How's that for good faith in the customer?! We once bought a coffee-maker and shipped it back--the company (Mr. Coffee) sent us a NEW one! If you want a company who will stand behind their products, DO NOT buy from D-Link!
20 Modem Failed
This modem failed 6 times before I returned it to the maker for repair or replacement. It would go out and AT&T techs could not make it work. It would come back in without anyone doing anything. It was intermittent and the problem could not be solved. Since my very frustrating experience with this product I could never trust it again. I have another brand now and it is working much better than the DCM200 ever did. Unhappy in California.
21 a good modem
Just got it. So far so good. My cable company, Mediacom, needed the "mac" number from the back of the modem for it to work (common).

Seems to be a spec faster then the rented Com21 modem I had.

Only negative is that it is a little larger and a little uglier than the small well designed Com21 form factor and has less lights on it telling you what is happening. But it works fine. Who cares what it looks like. I can't complain since it was a good price.

23 An Exceptional Modem
Don't be fooled by the price, you can't go wrong with this beauty. I had it up and running within 10 minutes of taking it out of the box, a simple call to my ISP to advise of the new MAC was all it required. As if this were not enough, it is noticeably faster than the Motorolla Surfboard it replaced.
24 Great
This modem is great. I was using the companies cable modem before i got this one. Once i installed it and got it up and running you could see the difference between the two modems. Highly recommended.
25 Solid Cable Modem, no real problems
I've had problems, but after dilligent searching, every problem was found to be something with either my cable company or my computer. The modem is great.
26 DCM-200
I just got one, and it seems to work pretty good. It was very easy to set up. The price is really cheap, we used to lease it, but not anymore. I hope I get my rebate though. So far, it seems to be a great product.
27 excellent product
I have owned it for about 6 months now and never had any problem with it. Worked right out of the box, all I had to do was to call Charter and give them MAC number. Would buy it again, especially at these prices now.
28 customer no service
Modem works o.k. Good luck luck getting your rebate though. They cheated me out of mine and the modem is not worth the non-rebate price.
29 Great Cable Modem
Hi Quality Cable Modem. Great bank for the buck. Stable as anything i have seen. Very new tech.
30 Excellent for AT&T
... It's easy to set-up with AT&T. I called AT&T and they gave me the website to register. It was done in less than 10 minutes and I was surfing faster than my leased RCA. I recommend this product since now it should take less than 8 months worth of lease to fully pay this modem. Beats leasing. Again, easy set-up if you have AT&T. No trouble with windows XP.

Hello Amazon community, I got this modem included in my cable deal, it performs ok, but I have not been able to make it work on Windows 98 SE with the USB port, which I somehow believe would work faster then the Ethernet port.
I have tried everything at least twice, and still no USB.
32 DCM-200 - Superb
The DCM-200 modem is the first network device I've ever hooked up that installed flawlessly. Installation took less than five minutes from start to finish and, even more surprising, the DCM-200 is noticeably faster than the modem it replaced, an almost new RCA modem provided by Mediacom. The RCA modem was only a few months old but had been a pain to install (a couple of phone calls over two days). Not so with the DCM-200. Installation couldn't have been easier. I just powered everything down, hooked the DCM-200 up, called Mediacom on the phone, powered everything back up when instructed, opened the browser to the IP address provided by Mediacom and everything else was automatic (except for powering down my PC again). I've got three PC's networked together with a switch/router/firewall and have grown accustomed to spending hours fiddling to get everything to play together properly. It was totally unexpected to have the DCM-200 off and running right out of the chute. Installation of network components just doesn't get any easier than with the DCM-200.

The noticeable speed increase I see with the DCM-200 apparently results from less latency in message processing within the modem. Responses from internet sites quite often seem instantaneous, whereas with the earlier RCA modem, responses were most often in the seconds range.

33 WORKS GREAT W/ THE NEW IMAC!
COMPLETELY painless set-up. Even for someone who has just switched to the Apple OS. I'm on a budget, so I did the self-install and simply called the cable company to activate the line (which made installation free). They did, I turned on the computer, and it was up and going w/ no software installation, tweaking, or filling in IP addresses etc. I was amazed, because both the cable company and D-Link provided software and substantial manuals.

I did do the ethernet connection instead of the USB line, simply because of space. I would recommend the ethernet because 1) it saves a USB port, and 2)I didn't see any Apple drivers listed in the D-Link Literature.

34 Change your modem and save some money
I have att broadband and instead of leasing the modem ... per month, I was thinking, why not purchase a modem, where you can keep it. This modem comes out to be ... after rebate which if you are planning to have broadband for more than 7 months, this would pay for itself. I wish I had done it earlier because I have already paid for 5 months worth for the cable modem, I could have already own the modem. Setting it up was a piece of cake. I simply installed the driver as the instructions said, called at&t and gave them my modem's product number, plugged in my new modem and waalah, my modem was working. This modem comes with USB connection also, but I can't seem to get that to work, but I'm happy with the ethernet connection. Before buying this modem, check your broadband internet company's website to see if it is compatible with their system. Also, I heard that some companies charge you to pick up your old modem, mine said that they didn't but I didn't want to take the chance so I returned it to my local office myself. Also comes with a 5 year warranty, the nice looking linksys one comes with only a 1 year warranty, something to consider.
35 Great price, works perfect!
Just received the DCM-200 cable modem. Easy to set up and works great. I was concerned because it was such a good deal, however, 100% satisfied. My local cable company set it right up. I don't have to ever rent again.
