The D-Link DFL-300 Office Firewall is a hardware-based firewall designed for the small office environment. The DFL-300 Office Firewall provides an economical solution for providing small offices with dependable firewall protection against malicious attacks from hackers on the Internet. The DFL-300 provides a web-based interface for easy setup and configuration but is also designed with more advanced security features than typically found in residential gateways.
1 Hard to configure rules and policies
I am a very technically proficient person, and I find this device difficult to configure.
If you want this device for just a simple firewall to keep the bad guys out, it is fine. You can plug it in and it works out of the box. (Personally, I would rather buy a $39 router instead)
If you want to allow certain access to specific computers on the inside LAN, use something other than this device. It is difficult to figure out, and the tech support is weak on D-Link's site for this model.
2 Junk
I have two of these units. The VPN has been a problem from day one. Both have lost policies on several occasions and both sporadically lock up. I plan on using them for paperweights.
3 Easy Set Up
The dfl-300 set up quickly, has ok logging and filtering features, and allows for vpn. You can assign its IP address, so it will work with any network you already have set up, unlike some of the other routers, which require the router to be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. I'm getting DSL set up at a second location an plan to use the VPN capability to make for a much cheaper connection that the phone company is charging for our WAN.
