The D-Link DSS-8+ is a Dual-Speed 8-port 10/100Mb Ethernet/Fast Ethernet NWay auto-negotiating Switch. It is designed to eliminate unnecessary traffic, and relieve congestion by delivering dedicated bandwidth for each of the eight ports. Each port can connect to either an Ethernet or Fast Ethernet device. NWay auto-negotiation automatically determines the transmission speed of the attached device on each port.
The DSS-8+ provides dynamic buffer allocation that employs network-load balancing for faster data handling. The uplink interface connection enables easy expansion. The DSS-8+ uses fast store and forward architecture to ensure low latency and high data integrity. Supports MII interface for flexible media connection and expansion capabilities.
The D-Link DSS-8+ is a powerful desktop dual-speed 8-port 10/100 Mbps Ethernet/Fast Ethernet NWay auto-negotiating switch. Designed to bring switching to the small office and small business, the DSS-8+ delivers high-speed switching capabilities at a low price per port. The switch functionally eliminates unnecessary traffic and relieves data congestion by delivering dedicated bandwidth for each of the 8 ports. An individual port can connect to either an Ethernet or Fast Ethernet device, and n-way auto negotiation automatically determines the transmission speed of the attached device on each port.

1 Loud!
I purchased this switch two years ago. It works perfectly except for the noise. The fan is amazingly loud. I am currently looking for a switch to replace it just because of the noise.
I see from some of the other reviews that this model has been replaced with one that doesn't have a fan. Make sure you get that one!
2 Owned for past 6 Months - Still Working - No Problems
I bought his about 6 months ago, and it sure wasn't [the price] it is now... But I made sure then that i got one without a fan. It is much quieter, and with no moving parts i am sure it wont go bad ever.
The only thing that will make me replace this is when the standard is 1000MB/s instaed of the 100MB now. But that wont be much longer.
Highly Recommended
3 Died after two years. Worked great for two years though.
I picked up this switch about two years ago. The internal fan stopped moving after about six months but a few blasts with an air can fixed that. It does have serious overheating issues. So after two years of being on 24/7 it finally died on me. All the LEDs were on steady and it wasn't passing any traffic.
It performed well for the two years it was in service. It's a great switch to have laying around as a spare, but definitely not for mission critical or long term use.
4 D-Link and Switches are like Peanut Butter and Jelly
When I thought of expanding my network to more that the current number of computers I have I naturally thought of D-Link for a quality switch. I chose the DSS-8+ because it is relatively inexpensive, small, and has 8 ports.
After purchasing this I found that it is actually faster than and older 5-Port switch I currently own and operate from D-Link. You don't see this very often. They are both 10/100Base-T Switches, but for some reason I get faster transmission times with the 8-Port.
There is nothing to installing a Switch, and as with any other switch there were no problems. As you probably know by now, I fully endorse D-Link and all their quality networking products.
5 D-Link Listens - No More Loud Fan
A Friend of mine said that D-Link no longer puts a fan in this product and the DSS-5+.(5-port Dual Speed Switch) All the reviews say that this series of hardware from D-Link outperforms others and has a lower price so I had to have one, but was hesitant because of the horrible fan stories.
That has all changed! Now the Fan has been taken out and a heatsink has been added to keep things cool. I would recommend that if you purchase one of these from a store open it up and look for the fan. The slot on the case for the air flow is still there but the fan itself isn't. And if you order it online make sure there is a good return policy, just in case.
I am sure I don't need to say that this product is one of the fastest, if not the fastest personal switches out there. It is no hassle for a set-up considering that you only need to plug in the power and plug in the Ethernet cables and your set.
I like companies that hear the consumers complaints and fix them. D-Link gets Two Thumbs up from me.
6 Dead after 12 months
Bought one for Xmas last year best thing since sliced bread awesome price for performance, However bad engineering design over the long haul little fan on the back right stops working the unit overheats, good luck dealing with Tech Support.
Consider the NetGear FS108 instead.
7 No Tech Support, Very Frustrating
I bought two of these DSS8+ 10/100 switches to replace two 3com 10M hubs figuring I would just unplug the 3com hubs and replace with the DLink switches and it would work great. BIG MISTAKE. Once I switched to DSS8+, all the computers would no longer browse the network. AND DLINK WOULD NOT HELP ME. I phoned tech support and left my name and number. They kept me on hold over 30 minutes. They would not call me back. I wrote three emails spread out over two weeks to DLink. They would not answer me. I filled out a Tech Support form on their web page. No answer at all. Now I'm left with two DSS8+ that won't work for me. I plugged back in the slower 3com hubs and everything is working again as before. I would love to have used the faster DLink products, but with their TOTAL LACK OF TECH SUPPORT (even the courtesy to answer one of my six inquiries), I can't recommend DLink products any more.
8 Very well crafted and reliable
I've been using one of these D-Link switches for almost a year with high performance, and absolutely zero trouble. Like one other reviewer, I paid much more, and would do it again. Slim profile and good mount points mean you can put it almost anywhere. Great for the small or home office users who want true 100 megabit performance, without headaches.
9 Excellent Low Cost Switch
I love this switch. I purchased it when it cost much more than this, but I would still pay the price I paid then for it. My network went from slow to fast in about 5 minutes. I had a game party with 10 other people and a Linksys switch cascaded off of this onw and we had zero lag, and had a blast. (Playing QIII, Codename: Eagle, Need for Speed: Porsche) At the price it is now, I'm seriously considering buying another one. :)
10 Outstanding Value
I bought one of these switches shortly after they first became available. Even though I paid the full retail price, it was money well spent. This switch performs flawlessly under any workload. I am using this switch in an office environment with five PC's attached, plus an occaisonal laptop, with an 8 port minihub connected to the uplink port. The minihub handles traffic going to the external print servers and the DSS-8+ switch carries data traffic. Using a mix of NIC's and Microsoft operating systems, all PC's are communicating at the full bandwidth of 100 Mbps in Full Duplex for a throughput of 200 Mbps. What more need be said?
