Like all D-Link wireless adapters, the DWL-G650 can be used in ad-hoc mode to connect directly with other cards for peer-to-peer file sharing or in infrastructure mode to connect with a wireless access point or router for access to the Internet in your office or home network.
**Driver or firmware upgrade download available Spring 2003.
1 excellent so far
install was simple. product works as advertised. my system is intel celeron with winxp.
2 This Wireless Card gets the Job Done.
I've had this card installed for about 2 weeks now and I have to say I am completely satisfied with it. There aren't any features that jump out at me right now, but there also aren't any gripes that I can think of either. So I have to give it 5 stars for having nothing wrong with it.
If you are looking for a card with out the hassle of marketing hype and promised features that only work on Tuesdays in Tennesse while it's snowing, then this is the card for you. At least put it on your list of cards to compare with.
3 Wireless Adapter by D-Link Out Performs my Built-in
I actually get better range with this D-Link wireless adapter than my Dell laptop's built in Wi-Fi. I'm guessing it's either a power issue or the antenna is outside the case instead of built in. I just wasn't happy with what I had. Sure it works, but I have to sit fairly close to whatever I am connecting to. With this D-Link card I can sit rather far from the main access point and still get a good signal.
This pared with my DI-524 router at home and I get a pretty good wireless range within my home.
Overall this product is easy to use and hasn't caused me any major problems a reboot didn't fix. w00t!
4 This Wireless Router is a Great addition to my Notebook
I can't say anything bad about this adapter.
Everything about this adapter has been 100% OK by me. Installation was painless, the everyday use is painless, the wireless range is good, the speeds are nice, and the actual physical construction is even quite solid.
I feel that this is a card anyone would be happy with. Unless of course it didn't work in some weird operating system or something. Either way it works perfect for me so I have to give it 5 stars.
5 Almost Invisible ...
This card just sits in my Dell notebook and is almost invisible. In the sense of I never have to deal with it, or take it out, or reseat it in the slot, or even mess with the software, it just keeps working. I just boot up my notebook and before I open a web browser I am connected to my home network. It's great!
I don't even remember installing this thing, so I guess it was pretty uneventful. But I do know it's easy to configure and has an easy to understand software interface when you do actually have to change the WPA or WEP key. Very nice.
Overall I'd have to say this is a 5 out of 5 stars. I'm not sure I could ask much more from an adapter card, unless of course it could someway be built into my notebook. :)
6 Use as Directed ...
Well I was happy to find out that this wireless router actually DOES work in my Dell laptop after I found out which slot to plug it into. >_< DOH!
Ok so after the initial ID-10-T error I was able to get this working as it's supposed to. I can now browse the internet wirelessly to learn more about computers and how they work. I can learn all this from the comfort of anywhere in my apartment. Isn't that amazing?
The card also work right away every time I boot up my laptop, when insterted into the correct slot of course. I like this card and just wish it had a big label warning to not use it if you don't know what slot it's supposed to fit into.
7 VERY poor product
I bought a "matching" DLINK wired/wireless router to go with this product (the DLINK DWL-G650 wireless cardbus adapter). After spending three hours on my own and about an hour on the phone with tech support, I got absolutely nothing.
The computer works just fine with the router when connected with ethernet cable. This wireless card did nothing though. Even though it said I had a 100% signal strength, it would not communicate at all with the router. Sorry DLINK, your product doesn't work and is being returned.
8 A Fast, Reliable, and Easy to Use Wireless Adapter
There isn't much to say about this wireless adapter except that it just plain works. I didn't get any hangups when installing, nor when I want to conenct to a wireless network. It connects automatically with my wireless network when I power up my laptop and is easily configurable to connect to other hotspots out in public.
The wireless range is suprisingly good as well. I can be anywhere in my home and I get good enough signal. I can be out on the outer rim territory of my schools wi-fi hot spot and still be connected. This allows me to be away from other students so I'm not crowded with them just to have Internet.
If you are looking for fast speeds with no frills get this one.
9 Very Stable Wireless Adapter
I've heard of other people's problems with wireless cards that seem to drop the signal every now and then, or suck the battery life out of a laptop, or some other random problem.
I have to say that this wireless adapter card has given me any problems since the day I bought it. I just plug this card in when I want to go wireless and the laptop recognizes the card and goes straight to looking for a familiar wireless access point and then connects almost instantly. I love it. If you don't have built in wireless and want your laptop to go wireless, then I suggest you pick up one of these wireless adapters from D-Link. Of course if your Wi-Fi is built in, then go ahead and use it, but if you are like me and you want more range, stick with an external card. I get better range this way.
10 Fast and Easy .. like your ...
Well this little wireless adapter card has helped me break the chains of bulky old restricting wires.
This D-Link adapter was easy to install and has great wireless range and performance speeds. I never feel lagged out, or slow because of my wireless adapter. I can connect to virtually any hotspot I've come across, and I'd recommend this to others.
This adapter goes great with a DI-624 (wireless router from D-Link). The speeds, the range, the compatibility, it all works out.
11 Fast and easy
I purchased a D-Link G650 due to the excellent reviews it has gotten. Even though I have a Linksys wireless router, the D-Link seemed to be the best laptop card available. Sure enough, it is fast and has a strong signal anywhere in the house. Although the card paperwork states that it needs a minimum 300mhz processor, my laptop is a P233 and it works just fine. This card is fast and easy to setup. It is better than I hoped!
12 Overall Very good
I own this for a dell laptop, and it works very well. I use it for a home network, and at my college to detect wireless signals in the classroom. The only issue i have is that when i first turn on my computer i have to open the program that comes with the device, and go to configuration and then hit apply before the internet will work.
13 Fairly happy
I've never used wireless networking before this and overall I am pleased. The only issue i have that occasionally I'll lose signal even when my computer doesn't move. (And I frequently lose signal when I move outside) It's kinda annoying but like i said overall it was worth the 30 bucks.
14 Doesn't work with Turbo mode to access sharing on another PC
But do work to access internet.
I have a DI-624 (Revision C3, Firmware 2.50) wireless router, a DWL-G650 (B4, Driver 2.54) wireless card on my Laptop (XP SP2), and a DWL-G520 (B2, Driver 3.17) wireless card on my desktop (Win2K SP4).
If I enable the "Super G with static Turbo", all connected at 108M, when I do a speed test, shows like below:
G520 ---> Internet = 3M
G650 ---> Internet = 3M
G650 ---> G520 = 20k~250k
G520 ---> G650 = 20k~250k
If I disable turbo mode, all are connected at 54M, will be like this:
G520 ---> Internet = 3M
G650 ---> Internet = 3M
G650 ---> G520 = 12M
G520 ---> G650 = 12M
if I connect my Laptop to the router with a cable to get rid of the G650 wireless car, enable "Super G with static Turbo", will be like this:
G520 ---> Internet = 3M
G650 ---> Internet = 3M
Laptop ---> G520 = 30M
G520 ---> Laptop = 30M
G650 just doesn't working properly with 108M! (Also tried with driver 2.46 and DI-624 with firmware 2.42, same thing.)
(Somebody mentioned revision C2 is the latest one and working better than B4, unfortunately I can't get one in Canada.)
15 Excellent speed, ease of use, and configurability
I bought this to go with the D-Link DI-624 wireless router for my broadband inet connection.
Setup was a breeze. I installed the driver, shutdown, plugged in the card, and booted up. That was it. No configuration needed.
There is plenty of configuration options available if I choose. So it also works with my wireless network at work.
16 Didn't work for me !
I bought the DWL-G650 card (Version B4) along with the the 624 Router. THe router was easy to install and configure. Work great.
But this card was a pain. I have HP laptop with windows XP properly updated to the lastest service pack.
Windows was complaining about that the drivers was not "Windows logo testing" certified ! Even with the latest D-Link drivers ....So, everytime I reboot my machine...windows asks me to re-intall/configure everything...totally unacceptable....
Let's be positive...of course, I got this card running...it works great ..but I could not fix the problem above...I didn't want to call customer support as well :-) ...
I tried a Netgear card after....was working without any problems.
17 I Use it, so It's Got to be Easy!
I didn't really have much wireless networking experience before buying this D-Link PC Cardbus adapter and a D-Link wireless access point. I've certainly never set up a wireless network before.
But doing my homework on the Internet while the product is being shipped to me, and reading the quick install guides that come with this product was quite helpful to say the least. I now know you should secure your wireless connection with some sort of encryption. So now Im all setup and this card lets me go wireless with my laptop.
Very easy to use software, after reading instructions of course, and the hardware looks nice and solid. nothing flimsy about them. I have zero problems with this card in my laptop.
I recommend this card for even the beginners.
18 was great until it starting flaking out
installation was simple on my IBM T23 running W2k and I was up running in no time and getting good range & performance. after 6 mos, i upgraded firmware on my DI-624 and driver for the G650 and the G650 has been problematic ever since - it hangs my PC until I pull the card out. As others have noted, D-Link support didnt want to acknowlege the possibility that the card was bad. I'm at the point of chucking it and trying another brand. I have no such problems using an Orinoco-based "b" setup while I am at work.
19 What a pain!
I had no problems installing the drivers for this card when I bought it. Excellent signal strength, fast speeds. It decided to stop working about 6 weeks later. I have tried getting help from D-Link support and it has been no help. I have been unable to reconnect for 3 weeks now, and D-Link refuses to accept that it might be a problem with their product. My first contact with tech support was rude and patronizing. The second contact directed me to download a "new" driver from their website--a driver which was older than the version that came with the card! The third, fourth, and fifth contacts were no help either. I've given up hope. Do not buy this card unless you have a lot of time to fix their bugs.
(I'm running Windows Me with a Toshiba PXC1100U cable modem and the D-Link DI-624 wireless router. My roommate has no problem connecting the router with his XP & Centrino-running laptop)
UPDATE: I finally got through to someone at D-Link that was helpful. An hour later on the phone, he was finally able to get it working. They need to work on their self-install guide to make it easier for non-techies like me to get their networks up and runnning!
20 Not compatible with Windows XP
D-Link card will connect to a peer-to-peer network at home 80% of the time on the first try. Connects to an open (non-wep) base station network (city-wide "Cafenet" wifi) with some coaxing.
Connects to my work network (with wep) intermittently, at best. I don't remember the last time I've had such a frustrating experience. I done everything per D-Link instructions (i.e. if your software doesn't work, disable Windows XP Wireless Zero Configuration) and still their software won't run. Windows will often associate with a base station but won't take a DHCP address. This card, on Windows XP, is an absolute nightmare - stay away.
(I should mention it works on my wife's Win2k laptop without issue.)
21 Didn't work. . .but easy to install
I bought the DWL-G650 card (Version B4) along with the the 624 Router (Version C1) a few days ago. The installation was very easy. The install guide was the best I ever read.
Only one problem, it didn't work. For some reason, I could not get a signal on my laptop with the DWL-G650 card. Several calls to D-Link did not solve the problem. Though the D-Link people are great and their e-mail service is also great, I still could not hook-up.
D-Link told me to send the product back to Amazon since they believe it is either a bad router or a back card.
I'll change the star rating once I get this product to work. But it deserves at least 2 stars for the great install guide and the helpful people at D-Link.
UPDATE: After more converstaions with the D-Link tech suport people, they concluded that the problem was with the latest firmware update (2.48) to this wireless card. When I use the prior firmware update 2.46, I have no problems hooking up with my Di-624 wireless router. HOWEVER, firmware update 2.46 has a WPA bug. So if you are willing to use 2.46 w/out the WPA encryption, this is a great product. The speed is amazing.
Otherwise, you may consider the Linksys w/speedboast.
22 Wireless hodgepodge
I bought two wireless products Linksys B and D-Link g laptop card. As you can see, many customers like or dislike either brand. I have both models working at 11Mbps by using the following settings for D-Link:
Authentication Type: Open/Auto/Shared (doesn't matter)
Preamble: Long and Short/Long only (doesn't matter)
Map Registers: doesn't matter
Network Addrerss: Not Present
Power Save Mode: Max/Normal/Off (doesn't matter)
Radio On/Off: THIS MATTERS!! Radio ON
Transmit Power: Doesn't matter transmits better on max, however.
23 Don't Bother - It Doesn't Work
I wasted two weeks trying to use this as directed, along with the DI-624 wireless router. I selected the WPA-PSK encryption format for security and found that it worked from 5 minutes to 2 hours at a time. Same thing with the old and fairly INsecure WEP encryption format. I emailed and phone D-Link's tech support line and got responses that did nothing to help in any way. I spent weeks researching and reading ratings penned by numerous others to choose what should have been the best wireless networking gear for my environs only to find D-Link's products a miserable failure, backed up by mediocre, faltering tech support.
24 Good Reliable Notebook Adapter
I had the built in wireless adapter with my laptop I bought but it didn't get the range I wanted. So I did some research and a bunch of people were saying that this card had good range, plus it was I my price range and has fast speeds.
Installation was very easy, no worries at all. Then the I immediately saw an increase in range from my old built in adapter. I think it is because this antenna is on the outside of the notebook, and the built in has the antennas somewhere inside the notebook.
This card is also very reliable and doesn't drop my connection when I am using it. I've heard other people complaining about this, but I don't see it happing with mine.
25 Lousy; potential speed gain just not worth the tech hassles
I've been trying to get this thing to run for several months now, and it's just not cutting it. Problems accessing multiple access points (corrupts driver, results in blue screen of death - nice debugging, Dlink - *not*), weak signals, and a hopeless implementation of encryption protocols - basically your choices are: secure network that drops connections every few minutes, or an insecure network that works reasonably well.
Dlink's tech support tries, but fails. The usual run-around: other drivers, error in upgrade procedure, etc. etc. Then they finally cave and recall the card, sending you a new one with a marginally improved performance.
I'm doubly pissed off at Dlink for releasing this lemon since I bought it along with the "official" Dlink SuperG access point/router which works fine. But so did my old router.
Unless you're willing to fight to get the thing working and think 108Mbps is worth the (serious) hassle you face, then I'd go with a more stable solution from someone else.
26 Speedy, Easy to use, and Installs with Little Effort
I had this installed in my PC in minutes. About 3 minutes really. I installed the drivers on the CD, rebooted with the actual card in and suddenly it saw my wireless router, the DI-624, and connected automatically.
I love this card for it's range, everywhere in my home, and the software that shows you your connection strength and other stats.
Very easy to use and goes great with the DI-624 wireless router.
27 Fast and Furious little Card
I love how easy this card was to install. he thing I like most its the speeds it can acheive with the D-Link DI-624 as it's access point. I can connect and transfer MP3's to my desktop just as fast as my wired network. Granted I do have to be inthe same room to acheive those awesome speeds, but even at two rooms down I get fast enough speeds. The Internet connection doesn't seem slower, I am protected with 128-bit WEP, easy to install by the way, and the software hasn't been a problem on my Dell laptop.
Overall I'd recommend this Wireless PC Card.
28 Good performance and compatibility
I purchased this card with a D-Link DI-624 router/WAP; as a pair, they perform flawlessly, and offer the advertised performance, which is on-par with wired Ethernet.
Compatibility of this card with other access points was good in my testing. It connected just fine to all the WAPs I normally use (all of which are B protocol), and offered the expected performance.
The only complaint I have is that I attempted to install the card using the latest drivers from D-Link, downloaded from their web site. Despite carefully matching the hardware revision of my card with the offered download, my attempts to use the card failed. The drivers installed fine, but it would not "sniff" any wireless networks (there were two within range), including one a few feet away.
After uninstalling the downloaded drivers, and using the earlier version supplied on CD with the card, it fired-up just fine, and operated perfectly.
Unfortunately, this is something I've encountered before with D-Link products, both with device drivers (as for this card) and with firmware updates for various D-Link products I've owned. It's not always the best advice to stay fully current on updates, as they occasionally introduce anomalies. If you're technically inclined, this is a minor annoyance that can be dealt with using a combination of patience and judicious back-ups. Average users may not have as much tolerance for this as I do.
With the installation stabilized, I find myself quite satisfied with the DWL-G650, and definitely recommend it -- though less technical users should stick to the drivers on the packaged CD.
29 Fast and stable, if you don't protect access
It works fine with D-Link DI624 wireless router, if you don't set any kind of protection tool. I have got stable and strong connections at 108 Mbps in any point of my house, even with many walls between DWL-G650 and DI-624.At this moment, I am connected for almost 6 hours, without crash and always at 108 Mbps. It works fine with my Sony Vaio notebook and with Toshiba's. But its stability vanishes when I configure any tool for secure networking (WEP, WPA, WPA-PSK ...). So, it works fine, but is not secure.
30 Use latest XP service pack but don't use Dlink driver
Dlink doesn't support WPA-PSK very well with Windows XP. If you are considering using this format, I recommend using another card. Or, you can use the built in Windows XP drivers (after upgrading using Windows Update) and bypass the Dlink utility altogether. This works, but you loose the ability to use the Turbo mode on the card.
Dlink support is slow and it appears that it takes them many months to fix bugs in their drivers. Once they release new drivers, they also frequently have bugs. Maybe they will get it right one day, but I don't have any confidence in their support today.
31 XP or 2000 only.
The card says it works with windows 98. Not for me. After fiddling with it for about 10 hours, I installed it in a Win2000 notebook. Worked right away. I also installed the updated driver from Dlink (108Mbs support) and I was dropping the connection every 15 minutes. Went back to the original driver included in the CD-ROM.
This card, with the DI-624 router works fantanstic. Setup was easy and trhe wireless connection is 15% faster than the wired 10baseT port on the speed sites. Works fine in any area of the house as well. WEP encryption was easy to setup.
32 ************ Avoid D-Link Products ********************
The product may perform up to your expectations but I only hope you never have to interact with D-Link's support organization. After dealing with conflicting, contradictory and completely erroneous information from their support organization, I have come to the conclusion that I don't care to do business with D-Link again.
I hope that if you do buy a D-Link product it works flawlessly (which mine did not), and you never have to call their tech support organization.
33 Card causes my laptop to freeze
When using this card my laptop freezes without any apparent reason. Sometimes it freezes immediately - sometimes after hours of use. All I can do is to reboot the laptop.
Sent the card to D-Link and got a replacement but it still wouldn't work. Updating drivers doesn't help either.
34 US Robitics 8- Port 10/100 Ethernet Switch
This U S Robitics is so convenient it only takes 2 connections.
Plug it in the adapter and one line to your PC. It wotks great you can plug in your printer and still have 6 ports left. I received a E mail that it would be shipped by 04/08/2004 and I received it at my door on the 04/08/2004. I have never seen next day delivery, I'll buy from Amazon anytime .
35 Make sure u have the latest revision - read for more info...
First, you must know that D-Link has the annoying and unprofessional habit of releasing unfinished, not so ready hardware to market. It seems that their engineering team is under pressure from marketing (typical) to deliver products before they are completely tested and ready. There are several revisions (internal designs) of this and other D-Link products. As of this writing (April 2004), the DWL-G650 has 7 of them, A1, B1, B2, B3, B4, C1, and C2 each representing a correction to a "Oops" of some sort! The DWL-G520 has 2, A and B, while the DI-624 router has 3, A, B, and C. The latest revision is what you should look for, it is usually on the sticker on the back of the box - just below the serial number.
OK, so I had the DI-614+ router, DWL-650+ PC Card, and DWL-520+ PCI card, and they worked great. I just needed the higher speed to stream music and video from my server upstairs, and wanted to use the more secure WPA protocol (not yet supported on the DWL-520+ *stupid D-Link*), so I upgraded to the DI-624 router (rev. C), DWL-G650 PC Card (rev. B4), and DWL-G520 PCI Card (rev. B). I upgraded the firmware on the router right away to 2.42 and the driver for the G650 to 2.48. The router seemed to work fine, but the card was not seeing it. My older 802.11B card (DWL-650+) was able to see and connect to the new router, but not the new card. I tried many things to no avail. I then installed the older driver 2.42 and the card started seeing the router but had trouble keeping the connection..I played with many settings and nothing helped. I tried two other laptops (different brands) and experienced the same symptoms.
Finally, I went to the a store and purchased another DWL-G650 and made sure it was the newer rev. C2 (the latest). Guess what, it worked right away and kept the connection solid. I tried FTP between the server (wired to the router) and the wireless laptop and got a transfer throughput of about 2400KBytes/sec... This is while using WPA-PSK with Super G enabled and using a short preamble. The same results were obtained with the PCI version of the card (DWL-G520).
I returned the bad PC Card (rev. B4) back to the store and kept the new one! So, just make sure that you have the latest version of the hardware.
One more thing, if you compare the signal quality/strength between DWL-650+ and DWL-G650 or between DWL-520+ and DWL-G520 you'll find that the new cards have a much lower number (worst). For example, my old 650+ used to get around 70% quality compared to 36% for the G650 at the same exact spot/direction. The difference is identical when comparing the 520+ to the G520. I have not experienced any performance issues though, the TxRate is typically at 72Mbps (not 108Mbps)! I think the new AirPlus XtremeG utility calculates the quality number differently and hence the difference, and future driver updates may further enhance the signal measurement.
D-Link's release of faulty hardware is wrong and must be stopped. The problem is that their competition are not much better. So go for what works, and buy from a place that has a good return policy. Someday another vendor will make better products and offer better support, and I will abandon D-Link :)
36 Great wireless card!
This card works best with the DI-624 router. I have Windows 2000 and have not had any problems after upgrading to the latest firmware. Signal strength and range are good, and card does not overheat after prolonged usage.
Just a few things to keep in mind.
1) Download the latest firmware BEFORE you hook up your wireless connection. Do this on your wired connection- the DI-624 wireless router has both wired and wireless connections.
2) Install the latest firmware. The card would also only work in a specific PCMCIA slot that I had installed it in.
3) Disable any internal builtin wireless cards in your laptop.
Happy surfing.
37 No Fuss, No Muss. This card FULL blazes - freestyle!
If I went off of other reviewers information, I would never have purchased this sweet product. After reading other reviews I decided to disregard them and just finally buy it. I plugged it into my Dell Latitude w/ Windows 2000 Professional. Coupled w/ a D-Link DI-624 Router, SBC DSL, and I'm full blazin' the net, freestyle. I have a cordless phone 2.4Ghz... no problems w/ interference. Was plug and play, all the way. If you can install software programs, you can install this.
38 Do not buy for use with an HP or Compaq laptop!
This is the second D-Link PCMIA card I've owned, and they have both been good performers, except they interfere with Windows' power management features on HP and Compaq notebooks. I thought the problem would be solved by buying this newer card, but it hasn't. My computer refuses to stay powered on for more than 20 minutes unattended, and frequently, when browsing the Internet, my mouse cursor freezes and the only way out is to hit the power button. I did some online research, and it turns out many other HP and Compaq laptop users have had the same problem. For some reason, these incompatibilities still exist, despite D-Link knowing about them for some time.
Again, D-Link cards perform well and are a good value, but I would not recommend one to an HP or Compaq user.
39 works really well
I think most of my frustration is due to my ISP, but this thing has been great really. The best feature doesn't even come in the box, but the tech support is phenomenal. I spent a bit of time on hold, but the guy I spoke with had me up and running in no time at all.
In general, the setup is easy (I'm using it with the D-Link DI-624). The program installs everything for you, I ran into trouble after my ISP shut down my service for some foolish reason and made me change some settings which I guess messed with my network setup. In any case, this comes highly recommended for anyone that wants to set up a wireless network, even if you aren't particularly computer savvy, as I am not.
40 Poor Range
I decided to replace my DI-704P wired network, which I had no problems with but just wanted wireless with my notebook. So bought the DI-624 along with the DWL-G650. I live in a two story house. In the room with the router the reception was excellent (I used Netstumbler and Cirond WiNc), but in the next room signal strength dropped to 75%, 50% in the third bedroom, downstairs 25% and outside under the bedroom with the router 15-20%. These numbers all seemed low. So I replaced both units with the same results. However, the story has a happy ending.... Again, I replaced both units but with the Netgear WGR614 router and the WG511 notebook. All I can say is D-Link has "POOR RANGE". With the Netgear setup - signal strength was above 75% anywhere in the house and outside opposite side as the router it was still 60%. The D-Link units need work! In addition, with SSID broadcast off and the WEP at 128bit the D-Link card could not find the network. Netgear had no problems. I found this review of the Netgear WG511 on Cnet's website. It shows the Throughput/Performance of 5 different cards including the D-Link and Netgear cards ---- http://reviews.cnet.com/4505-3251_7-21056546.html?tag=txt ----Hope this helps you make an informed decision.
41 NETGEAR STUFF - Specific - MR814 Router

works well as a wired router
Weaknesses:
wireless is so unpredictable but most of the time down
Summary:
I have this router for almost a year and I was never able to use it for its wireless fetures more then a few hours at a time, and only once. It usually drops the connection after 10 minutes. Then it does not work for days.
Customer support is really bad, they give you the run-around trying to save a buck replacing the unit. They blame your wireless computer for it and want you to upgrade everything like there is no tomorrow. (My wireless worked well with other networks, and even in the house "sees" a neighbour's wireless network). I really wasted 1 hour on the phone with them so they told me (after on hold most of the time) they will connect me with level 2 technician. Probably somebody smarter at the run-around.
THIS WAS MY FOURTH AND LAST CALL TO CUSTOMER SERVICE AND I TOLD TO THEM HANG UP BECAUSE THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO "HELP" SOMEBODY ELSE (WHO IS PROBABLY ON HOLD FOR HALF AN HOUR). These were totally 3 hours wasted.
I will never buy from NETGEAR again. (I have a 15 year experience with computers.)
Thank you!
42 I ended up going back to my old Netgear card
This card would not work with the 624 router. I keep losing the connection and then the router would disappear from my list of available networks, while my neighbor's network two doors down seems stronger than ever.
Switched back to my old 22mbps Netgear card and the network has been stable so far. Not as fast, but at least it works and doesn't drop me.
43 fast
Extremely fast tranfer of files between computers, 123meg file in 67 seconds with computers about 150' apart
D/L from internet at 105K/sec on my dsl line same speed as my desktop. Setup was confusing still not optimized and don't have security enabled yet. Overall great for the price
44 Mostly great...
The great: Near the base it is very fast. Far from the base, it works farther than my old 802.11b did, and even at that range I get better speed than I got with my old gear close to the base. :)
The unsure: I don't know for sure if its the base station or the card (I think base), but every once in a while, the connection will just drop. Windows will still show a link, but pings ect (to the base or anywhere) just fail).
May or may not matter to you: No external antenna connector. There are ways to "install" one if you really need one, you can find at least two pages via google. Linux drivers - no distro comes with working drivers, and d-link doesn't provide a driver or support. You need to go here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/madwifi/ and compile the stuff. And it doesn't get you full functionality. - so if you are in linux most of the time, you should probably pick another card. Me, I'm in 2k most of the time with my notebook, so the linux support is workable. I'm happy.
45 Seems to not like WIN98
I had the chance to purchase a B but decided to ride the NEW edge and get the G650 (Oct 2003). But when I plugged it in, it would not connect up to the LinkSys Router A/B. I had a friend try it at his house which was using the D-link of another version, and mine would not work on his PC either. He reloaded drivers even, no dice. He put his existing card back in and loaded fine. I returned mine. Second one, junk condition from D-Link considering mine was mint having never been used in a working mode! It gave me a different error altogether. I had a co-worker try it on his laptop with WIN98, but it didn't work there either, we tried various drivers. I then got a laptop with WIN2000 and it couldn't load it either. Returned this one 2 days ago. Hopefully my next one will work? The co-worker was using yet a newer version of D-link G650, which had issues also. I really am sorry I didn't go B at this point in time. I only hope d-link will come through with try 3.
46 Finally Got it Working Good
I bought the DWL-G650 card (Version B4) along with the the 624 Router (Version C1) about 5 weeks ago. I found it very hard to set up. XP Professional was installing its own drivers and would not recognize the D-Link drivers. It took me about 10 hours to resolve that issue. Customer support at D-Link was of no help. Then I had a dropped connection problem and a slow web surfing issue. I recently resolved that issue by upgrading my cable modem for free to a Toshiba PCX 2600. I was using a Toshiba PCX 1000. My point here is that there are so many factors that determine how this card will work for you. I'm getting 108mbps and hope I can continue to enjoy these fast speeds. It's no fun trying to fix things all the time.
47 Horrible software, reasonable hardware
I bought the g650 with the DI-624 router. It was a disappointment. I could not get the card to see the wireless network, after having followed the installation instructions step by step. After much fiddling I found out that doing exactly the opposite of what was said let me connect to the router, after all. That is, disabling the "utility" and using windows to configure the wireless network. After that, despite getting the card to work, I was disappointed with range, speed, and reliability of the signal. I use Win XP Pro, and maybe the software problems are specific to this version. Anyway, the other card I have (TrendNet) works much better, even with D-Link's own router. And just as the last drop, the indicator lights are far too big, and keep blinking all the time, what is enerving and distracting. Ah! They do not work as described in the manual...
As a result of all this, including not being able to get all my house covered, I'm back to my blue wires...
48 Should not have switched brands
All of my wired networks are with Netgear products and I should have stayed with them. A local electronics store was having a sale on D-Link products, and I wanted to go wireless, so I figured I'd give them a shot. I did a little research on the Internet with OK reviews for this card (apparently for the "A" & "C" versions) and the DI-624 router, which I also have. Everything worked fine until I got the latest windows ME updates and now the card does not work at all. I tried both both the drivers that came with the card (v. 2.23) and the latest (2.48), but I can not connect to any wireless networks (and I've tried many). It turns out that I got stuck with the "B" version of the card, which a lot of other people are having problems with. I'm just hoping I will not have to replace both the router and the card, although my friends have been able to connect to my routher with other cards without any problems. Needless to say, I just ordered a new Netgear wireless card and I am not expecting any problems. My current Netgear wired PC adapter is nearly 5 years old and I have never had any problems with it.
49 Crashes Often!!
I bought one of these last week brand new, and will probably have to return it. The 108Mbps is great, but the card crashes my machines frequently. I have two toshiba tablet PCs, both freshly installed with Windows XP, and the card bluescreens either one at least once a day. It also often simply quits working, and requires a reboot to detect my d-link access points again. On install with the very latest drivers, it complains that the drivers are not signed by Microsoft, which should be a warning. They seem to be very crappy stability, these would never sell in Japan.
50 Terrible device drivers
There's a reason why this card is so cheap and offers a rebate. It will waste endless hours of your time getting it to work.
The people that gave this card good reviews either (1) are not using encryption, or (2) don't have revision B of the card.
I started out with the original drivers under WinMe. But I was frustrated because it would never remember my encryption settings. Also, I wanted to experience the much-touted "108Mps", so I downloaded the latest drivers. After that, nothing worked. The new drivers are complete junk. I'm a software professional, and I spent about 24 hours over the last 3 days trying to get the updated drivers to work.
I'm currently using the old driver and the newer Utility (which you use to set it up and see what speeds you're getting).
It's unbelievable that such a well-known and well-respected (?) company as D-Link would put out such a bad product. The hardware may be good, but it's useless without decent drivers.
Pay the extra money and buy a better card. I wish I had.
51 A Great Wireless Adapter
Following the instructions was never an easy thing for me to do, but when you do it right, installation is a snap. The speeds for this card are good, even when not coupled with a D-Link wireless access point. The security is easy to use and quite secure. The range is also a plus for this card. I can be anywhere in my office and still recieve an Internet connection. This is great for when I have meetings and I bring my laptop to meetings.
I give this card 5 stars because it deserves it. I had zero problems, and am very pleased with it's performance.
52 Hardware Version B3 doesn't work on my laptop
I have a brand new compaq presario x1000 laptop (winxp) that this card (hardware version B3) doesn't work on using drivers 2.48. The laptop is fully updated with all drivers and firmware, but this card still causes the touchpad to freeze and runs the cpu at 85% utilitization for unknown reasons, except for some apparent hardware conflict with synaptics touchpad.
The only reason this card gets 2 stars is because it does work on my old sony vaio fxa32 laptop running windows 2000, but the best throughput i ever got was about 30mbps, even with the super-g router DI-624 (hardware version C).
Stay clear of h/w version B3, which is stamped on the outside of the box.
53 D-Link DWL-G650 "Version B" sucks big time!!!
This is the worst 802.11g card out there. Apparently, there are three versions (batches) of this card and the people stuck with version B are in for a major ordeal. Basically, they (D-link) have updated the driver 4-5 times and everytime they ix one bug, another pops up. I have had this card for about two months now and everytime I switch WiFi netwroks (home to school), the card goes crazy and hangs my laptop. After that, everytime I restart the machine, I get the infamous blue screen and the laptop hangs. If I remove the card, the machine boots up perfectly. This is usually followed by me reinstalling the driver and getting pissed-off. The bottom line is that if you get this card, make sure that you get version A or C.
I'm not making this up... see for your self at the D-link website (they only have 1 driver for version A and C while version B has 4-5 updates). Also, just type "D-Link DWL-G650" in google groups and you'll see at least 100 posts about the same problem.
By the way, I'm getting the Linksys card. I have their router and WiFi game adapters and everything works the first time!!
54 Up and running in ten minutes
The DI-624 Router that I got with this replaced my other router, allowing me to connect four computers via wire and this card connected my laptop to the web. Configuration couldn't be easier, and the strength of the signal in the remotest part of the house is supberb. Just great!
55 Why oh why did I buy this wireless card?
After seeing good reviews at Amazon I purchased both the D-Link DI-624 router and the DWL-G650 PC Card. I upgraded the router firmware to 2.28 right away, and upgraded the G650 driver to 2.46 to get 108 Mpbs and WPA-PSK. The router seems to be OK, but the G650 gives me nothing but problems. I found that if my PC suspended, when it resumed the WPA pass phrase would be lost and I had to reenter it. Sometimes, I couldn't get connected to the net even though the D-Link utility showed I was associated, and ipconfig /renew did not get me a DHCP address. I've rebooted numerous times. I've installed the newer 2.48 driver fix which caused me not to have wireless connectivity at all, so I dropped back down to 2.46. I had to give up on WPA-PSK and use WEP 128, and the only reason I bought this combination was to get WPA support. I spent hours and hours tinkering with this (in fact, days and days!) and I wish I purchased a different brand combination of router/card (even though the DI-624 seems OK, I'd prefer a single-vendor wireless solution). After having the above problems with my IBM Thinkpad, I'm trying a second G650 in my Dell Latitude C640 and I'm having similar problems. Today, however, after having removed the G650 for a day and plugged it in again, I can't get the PC to boot all the way. Removing the card lets it boot. If I try to insert the card after boot completes, the system hangs completely. I've removed and reinstalled the G650 drivers in an attempt to get a workable Dell. No luck. The one good thing I can say is that when the G650 is working, it gives me great coverage. I've been able to roam anywhere in my two-story 4-bedroom home and stay connected to the net. In toto, though, I wish I stayed with Linksys, my previous wired router vendor.
56 Inconsistent performance
(+)Great price, high speed
(-)HOWEVER before you buy this consider whether a cordless phone is used nearby. The DLINK card consistently drops connections when I use my 2.4 GHz phone even at 200 ft away. Yes, I should expect that due to the fact they use the same frequency but I NEVER experience interference with my 2Wire wireless card which was so much more reliant and is used at the same location. The DLINK card keeps dropping connections when the phone is used. It is incredibly frustrating and I am going to consider returning it.
Third DLINK product I've bought, third satisfactory result from them. I've also used a total of 6 wireless cards and 3 wireless routers/access points. Although DLINK isn't at the bottom of the heap, it sure hasn't performed at the top. Checkout 2WIRE (hard to get retail) or Netgear's equipment.
57 Good Job D-Link !
Had a linksys wireless b-card that clogged up a (older C-500)notebook. It only worked within 20 feet of the linksys router and pages would only load after extensive churning and some noticeable (30 seconds+ hesitation).
Installed this D-Link card and not only was the laptop now connecting immediately, but we were was able to receive the signal throughout the house and upstairs (router in basement) (about 45 feet away with many walls and other obsticles) Good job D=Link
58 Lightning fast after firmware upgrades!
This product is not anything special unless you have the D-link DI-624 Router teamed with the firmware updates on both the Router and the Network Card. After that this product is smokin fast. It is just as fast as having a Cat-5 connection. The firmware updates were pretty self-explanatory, if you have any computer experience at all. Even if you don't I'm sure you have a guru fried that will hook you up. Bottom line if you have a need for speed this product will more than get you there and is easy on the pocketbook. Great product D-Link!
59 No sleep for my laptop.
I purchased the DWL-G650 and the DI640 router about a month ago and have enjoyed 108Mbps since day 1. Only one problem, I can't allow my laptop to sleep or hibernate or I will have to reboot in order to reconnect to the router. I downgraded to the 54Mbps and the connection is fine after waking up the laptop. I tried to work out the problem with tech support. They got a painfully detailed system config document and a reproducable test case. After 3 emails they gave up and told me I would have to phone in to solve the problem. Hire some QA testers! Otherwise a good deal for 108Mbps speed.
60 Easy setup with Extreme G Wireless Router
I purchased this to work with Extreme G wireless D-Link router. After working through the setup to encrypt my connection, works great. Just remember, when you encrypt 128 bit, use the same 26 digit code for the router and card. Works great.
61 Wires, who needs them!
Thanks to my research on the Internet, I selected this DLink wireless PC Card. And what a great decision it was. It took 20 minutes to install this card in each laptop, and that included the time to download an updated firmware from support.dlink.com that doubled my connection speed!
I get great performance, and even maintain acceptable performance on the floor below where the signal must find it was way through several walls and doors. In the same room as my router I get lightening fast performance that appears to be as fast as my wired connections.
DLink provides a nice status and config tool as part of installtion, and that really eased the way into verifiying that all was operating properly. You can see signal strength and check on which wireless mode you are operating in.
One suggestion, you should enable WEP to add security and encrpytion to your wireless network. It requires changes to both your router and the wireless card(s), but its pretty simple and I did not notice a big performance impact.
If you are thinking about going wireless, this is a great card to select.
62 Tech support says super-G is unstable and not recommended
I had a good experience with a previous DLink purchase, so I chose DLink again and bought DI-624 and DWL-G650 this October. I upgraded both firmware and enjoyed 108MB connection for over a month without any problem.
Then, first the router stopped working (It rebooted every 5 minutes or so) and was replaced. We had another fine week before the card started losing connection this time; The signal strength became weak and often goes to no-connection. (We have another wireless card from Lucent which is working fine, so the router is not the problem.) I called the tech support and got the following recommendations:
* Disable super-G because super-G is unstable;
* Don't update Windows because the latest Microsoft virtual device driver does not work with this card; Talk to Microsoft because this is a Microsoft problem;
* Don't move around;
* Don't use a wireless phone with the same frequency; Neighbors' wireless phones can also interfere;
* If you don't like these recommendations, just return it to the store because we can't do anything about it.
I followed their recommendation and returned it to the store.
63 SuperG has strong signal - Good with DI-624
I purchased the DWL-G650 PC card and the DI-624 54G wireless router together with a $40 rebate to replace my old DLink router. The installation and configuration of DI-624 is a snap. After I upgraded the firmware to have the 108Mbps Super G mode, the signal actually became more steady and much stronger. I have the DI-624 router on the second floor. With the DWL-G650 card in my Compaq Presario laptop, I can get on the network with good signal anywhere indoors. I am waiting to test it out at my back yard.
In general, the Wireless Configuration utility software that came with the DWL-G650 works fine. However, I do have some problems after I install it on my WinXp laptop due to the interference of the Wireless Zero Configuration service that comes with WinXP. Fortunately, I found an article at the DLink Technology Knowledge base to show me how to disable the WinXp service and use the utility software that came with Dlink. It's much better. It gives you broader control and better configuration with a signal strength meter. In case you run into problems with the installation of the utility, make sure your check the Dlink web site for Knowledge Base. And most importantly, upgrade to the latest firmware.
The default broadcasting channel is #6. If you have 2.4 GHz wireless phone, you might want to try either the #1 or #11 channel instead (change the setting on the router admin page). However, for the Super G mode, it only gives you the Channel #6 option. I also tried this card on my son's toy laptop (Pentium 233). It gives me the same speed as of the regular LAN Ethernet card (10/100). On my Compaq Presario laptop(PIII_1.3GHz), I can watch streaming video of news from Taiwan in my family room on the first floor. Isn't that impressive?
64 Beware
I bought the card because I had heard that D-Link had good customer support -- what a mistake -- after waiting on hold forever a hopeless technical support person says there must be "some sort of hardware conflict" and I should call my laptop maker. When I asked wasn't there anything he could suggest -- he suggested returning it -- which I will.
65 Don't use this card with a Dell Inspiron 4000!
After three frustrating months owning this wireless card and trying to get it to work with my Inspiron 4000, I am giving up. It has never worked properly, even siting right next to the base station. A lot of the time the card isn't even recognized by the computer as being in the slot. This is documented by D-Link as a problem with Texas Instrument-made slots, which the Inspiron has. Unfortunately D-Link's customer service is so poor that you get a different answer each time you call. And then the solutions are something like "reinstall your operating system," even though there is a documented problem with the hardware. Don't buy this for use on an Inspiron 4000!!
66 THIS SYSTEM IS RIDICULOUS
Ok first of all if you ever want to believe any reviews, believe mine because I will tell it how it is and not in a cheesy goody two shoes way. I a tech crazy lover and this D-link dissapointed me. 1.) The up to 108mbps is FIRMWARE as you will see in small print. Plan on calling their support to get the firmware downloaded because it is as easy as just downloading it and unzipping the file. 2.) IT HAS NO SOFTWARE!!! That is like saying you don't need a recovery disc for a computer. You know how many times technology crashes and having a disc rather than THE NET is a lot better. I was suprised to learn that the way to set it up was through the internet considering the fact that when you hook the device up it doesn't know that you hooked DSL or Cable to it. Guess what, I was right. It took me a total of 4 days wasting my time and weekends just getting it "up and running." The interface is confusing, the CD is for the manual you already have that comes with it (their stupid "quick installation guide that isn't quick), and you have to call D-link and spend hours floating around their phone lines till you get a level 95 technician. I also got the card which was another issue. When you get the 54mbps, supposedly you can get the firmware and get it up to 108, but beware, the card can't do the same. Since it can't do the same, the two hardware's can't work with each other making this an endless battle. D-link has ok support but you will spend forever trying to get it up and running. Plus I don't think you can transfer files and truly network. I think you can only do wireless DSL and Cable which is stupid as well.
Here is the best alternative I sware. *************Microsoft************
Yeah I was skeptical too. I haven't been the biggest Microsoft fan, but I will say that they got my vote. After this purchase I have a new respect for them. I am talking about the Microsoft BaseStation MN-700. We are talking about $same price$ and **10 min. setup**. 10 minutes is all it takes to set up the laptops and computer. For those of you who have a built in wirless card, it will work with the Microsoft. It had many problems with the D-link. D-link would work for 30 seconds, then the net shut off. Then again, and again, etc. Plus only one laptop was allowed on at a time with D-link. I call that useless. The basestation also allows you to print directly from a laptop to a printer wireless and transfer files from PC to PC. It comes with software and easy easy easy installation. It is fast. I am using it to write this review on my laptop.
Go Microsoft. Don't waste your time on D-link, there are better things to do. I heard Linksys, Netgear, and Belkin had problems. Netgear just has terrible support from what my next door neighbor told me. If you do go with D-link against my review, then don't upgrade the firmware. Good luck :)
67 D-Link DWL-G650
The card itself is more or less OK. Works with Windows 2000 and D-Link DI-614+ router.
However, the software which comes with the card, AirPlus -- to find a network and configure the card is pretty bad. One has to be logged in as an administrator all the time to use it. If you have pre-configured a profile for a particular network (having logged in as an administrator), the card will work when you are logged in as a regular user. However, there is no way to see to which network you are connected, what is the signal strength or if you are connected at all!
This is on top of the fact that the software is shipped on a CD with a virus (Dropper.Netbuser.A in autorun.exe file).
Yet the hallmark of D-Link is its tech support: a characteristic combination of incompetence and rudeness. Once you get in through a busy line, as soon as you ask them something they don't know -- and they don't know much -- they simply hang up. Happened to me 3 times. The supervisor, whose name is Joe, just tries to compensate his lack of knowledge with agressiveness.
The bottom line is -- why buy D-Link products and suffer if there are excellent products from other companies on the market?
68 Works as expected
I am using the D-Link AirPlus Extreme with a Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router. It is a good combination so far.
However, I want to give readers an important tip. I was originally using a Linksys WPC54G cardbus adaptor. It worked well for a couple weeks, then stopped working all of the sudden. The reason - I don't know for certain - but my guess is ESD, Electro-Static Discharge. So be careful when handling your cardbus adaptor - treat it like you would a memory chip or PC card.
I can't give this 5 stars - too soon to tell if it is as sensitive as my old Linksys adaptor.
69 The Perfect 11G Card
With this card all I need to do is plug it in and the software will start scanning for a connection. If I am at home it automatically connects to my network because I have the WEP keys all ready typed in and the SSID is all ready set.
I can also use the software to search for active wireless access points among my location. This is helpful for when I am in an airport, or simalar hotspot.
The signal strength is always 50% or above in my home which doesn't effect my download speeds at all. I've also dropped this card a couple times and it has (knock on wood) always worked. Very Solid.
70 Great Adapter with Awesome New Firmware - Thanks D-Link!!
I recently bought this adapter about a month ago and it installed and runs great with the supplied firmware. I can get some good range and the 128-bit WEP works great. Speeds are fast as well.
But now the speeds are even faster thanks to D-Link. All I had to do to get double the speed I used to is download and install the latest drivers. I did this and I was able to transfer files from my desktop to my laptop in half the time. I transfer files (video and MP3s) quite a bit and this extra speed for free is a great perk.
Overall this card has caused me zero problems on my XP laptop.
I'd recommend it to others who either already have a DI-624 (D-Link router that supports new fast speeds) or is looking to get an 802.11g setup.
71 Get the new 108Mbps drivers for FREE!
Download the new 108Mbps drivers at D-Link's website. Get it for your card and for the router (DI-624) and you can get double the data rate. I can literally transfer files from one PC to another in half the time.
After downloading and installing the new drivers you will notice that the card is very stable, has good signal range, and causes no problems with windows.
72 good product
Actually I was not quite satisfied with this card at the beginning, but since I updated the driver. Everything works fine. I got very good range in the building. I am a little bit far away from the access point and the AP's signal is not strong enough, but I still have a stable connection. It seems windows xp is always over optimistic about the signal strength, but d-link's utility is more reliable.
I have tried several other wireless cards, like us robotics, not as good as this one.
73
Just like the title says. I am using Windows XP and I still needed the drivers to install the device, no problem. I don't recomend the software that comes witht the card, it just plain SUCKS! I also have the DI-624 wireless router by DLINK.
I don't recommend using WEP or anyother encryption. Instead, set filters to only allow known MAC address to access the network, others wise don't expect to exceed 15-25 feet indoors. Plays well with other wireless networks, both 802.11b/g
Beware with the different Hardware Versions. I have the lastest which is B2. (makes me question why they make revisions?)
I since made some changes thaT allows it to work beyond the 15-20ft. Here it goes:
TX rate: Auto (must be set on router and card)
Channel: 1 or 11 DO NOT USE Channels:3,6,9 if you have a 2.4 phone (channel must be same on router and card)
WEP: DISABLED, (Both on Router and Card) (affects range)
MAC FILTERING: Allow Known MAC to access the network (option on router)
Settings on Card: > Device Manager > Network Adapters > Dlink DWL-650 > properties > Advanced Tab
Driver Version 2.36 (from Dlink Website)
Preamble: Long (must be same on router)
Antenna Switch: 1 (only if you have 1 antenna, otherwise choose 2)
Antenna Tx: Both
Map registers: 256 (default)
Network Address: not present (default)
Power Save Mode: MAX (This is my personal pereference)
Radio ON/OFF: ON
Transmit Power: 100%
With these settings I gained an extra 30-45 feet. Also I am using DLINK DI-642 wireless router. READ MY REVIEW ON DLINK
DI-624
I was real close to returning this item but after the "tweeking" I am reconsidering.
Hope this helps.
74 I'm Having a Blast
I am having so much fun with this wireless networking card in my laptop. Everywhere I go I check to see if there is any wireless access points around that I can find and maybe connect to. I enjoy seeing how many wireless devices are in a certain area. Even driving down my street I can see 3-5 APs broadcasting at one time.
Speeds are great, the range is great and I am totally digging this wireless freedom.
75 With This card I can be free
This card is easy to install, comes with good software, and has good range abilities. When coupled with the right AP (like DI-624) I get awesome distance with my laptop in my home. The card was also very easy to install and is an important piece to my laptop setup.
76 Excellent Range with DI-624
I get a very good radius of coverage when I use this adapter in my laptop and the DI-624 as the AP. I recommend this combo if you want ease of use, simple setup, and good range.
The software that gets installed with this adapter is pretty good to. Nice and detailed info on the site survey.
77 Another Great Value from D-link
This card has set my entire family's laptops free from wires. We now can surf independently in our own rooms, or all together where ever we want. We play games online together and there is no stutters because of network speed, we stream MP3s from our desktop to our laptops with the wireless and I don't see a difference from being wired in. The setup was very easy since these are basically "hot swapable" and the price is right.
78 I was new to Wireless ...
But now I can be anywhere in the house with my laptop and still have a network connection to the Internet. Thanks to D-Link's simple documentaion and setup wizards I was able to setup my first wireless network in almost no time at all.
This card was very simple to install. It is super easy to use after install since all you need to do is plug it in and it starts looking for a connection. The software that somes with it is quite useful as well.
With this D-Link wireless card and my DI-624 I get great reception and don't see any problems now nor do I predict any in the future.
79 A real winner
I am glad this was my first choice for a wireless adapter. I was told to go out and buy a wireless adapter and with help from the local store's employee he recommended me this card. He said D-Link was a good reputable company. I believed him and bought this card and brought it home. Besides if he wasn't right I could always return it right back to him. :)
Either way I was able to get this working by following the intstructions and was connected to my work's wireless network in minutes. I thank the helpful employee who helped me and I thank D-Link. Thank you both.
80 Solid Card, with Excellent Signal Range
With this card in my laptop I can be anywhere in my home and have a connection with my network/the Internet. There are even some spots in my front and back yard that get signal. I am not sure if this is because of thie card, my router/ access point/ or the location I am in, but all this D-Link 11g stuff is working perfect for me.
With the 128-bit WEP and MAC filtering on the router I feel safe in knowing people aren't going to get into my network.
I'd recommend this card if you want 11g on your laptop and have an available CardBus Slot.
81 Perfect Laptop Adapter coupled with the DI-624
When I bought this Card I figured it would work just fine and it does. No suprises here. You get what you pay for and it does what it says on the box. I get good range throughout my home, and the install was easy and painless.
The configuration utility for this and the DWL-G520 looks cool and is very informative. It gives you signal strength, a list of APs in the area, and if they are WEP protected or not. Very useful for finding hotspots. I just wish it had an external antenna for reaching long distances.

82 Outstanding Little CardBus Adapter
You mean I can access 802.11b AND 802.11g networks, plus get a max of 54Mbps bandwidth? Where do I sign up?
I signed up with the D-Link team with my wireless and there has been no looking back since then. With this card and the other D-Link stuff I got I get fast speeds, cool looks, reliable connections, and top security features. This card and the whole XtremeG line has performed oustanding for me.
Setup was a sinch, adapting to other networks is easy as pie, and I like it all.
83 This is Excellent
When I first saw my friend with one of these in his laptop I had to have it. The fast 802.11g speeds, the sleek look, the easy to use software, the range he got with this card, everything was coming up milhouse.
Then I bought it and found it is all that and then some. The installation was real easy, the use of this product is quite simple as far as configuring it to work with other hotspots. Anyhow I wanted it, I got it, and now I love it!
84 This works great with the 614+
I am kinda responding to what a previous reviewer said about this not working well with the 614+. Mine works fine with my friends 614+. I have a 624 at home because I want the real 802.11g speeds, but when I am over at my friends I can connect at 11Mbps speeds. Yes this wont get faster speeds than the dwl-650+ when connected to the 614+, but the 650+ wont get faster speeds when connected to a 624. It's just the way things work, it's not D-Link's product's fault.
Anyway, this card performs great in a 802.11b network or 802.11g network. It also does have a great software package that comes with it. The utility that comes with it seems well thought out and easy to use. I like this card all the way around.
85 using with DI-614+
Did not work till I update router firmware to the latest one;
Using DWL-650+ I am able to get 22Mbit but with this one(DWL-G650) getting only 11Mbit; Have tried on IBM Thinkpad 600X with Win2000 and Sony VAIO Win XP pro and somewhat not always can get connected; will use for few more days to see stable performance otherwise will return; DWL-650+ looks better choice(for me).
86 Works as Stated, Plus Some Perks
Very useful utility, strong range, simple setup, and some what inexpensive. I like it as much as you can like a wireless adapter. Thanks D-Link!
87 Good range and was very simple to install
I can get a wireless signal from anywhere in my home and the speeds are perfect. I cant give the technical info, but I know I don't notice a difference when web browsing from when I am plugged into the router with the Ethernet cable.
Installing this card was very easy and only took about 5 minutes. One reboot and I was up and running. I use Windows 2000 Professional and a Toshiba laptop.
I'd also like to point out that the D-Link utility that comes with this card is very helpful and works quite well. With this utility I can scan the area for wireless access points and then connect to the one I want. It displays useful information like the name of the access point, signal strength, and more.
I recommend this card and if D-Link's other cards come with this type of utility I recommend at least checking them out.
88 Disabled my regular network connection
I just puchased this item. After installation, my regular ethernet connection stopped working. It took many hours and a system restore to get it back into place. While using the wireless, my computer would sometimes lose the connection and could not be reconnected without rebooting. I am using Windows 2000, so perhaps XP users have a better time, but I can't recommend this product. I'm returning it and purchasing another brand.
89 Works as stated, plus it has good speeds and range!
I have quite a range with this and the DI-624 from D-Link. Everything was rather simple to setup and configure. I can do a site survey and see that my neighbors have an access point up and running as well. I enable WEP so they can't get on my network, but it "looks" like someone can get ont their network pretty easily.
This along with the DI-624 work great together. Plus with this G650 card I can go to other wireless hotspots because they are mostly all 802.11b and the G products can connect to those just fine.
I am completely satisfied.
