ELLIOT D. ABRAVANEL | ELIZABETH A. KING
1 Wonderful for some, disappointing for me
I bought this book due to raving reviews from several of my friends. I was very excited and optimistic. I determined my body type and was impressed that MOST of the bad foods for my type were foods that I already knew didn't agree with me. I followed the instructions and the meal plan, but met with absolutely minimal success. I couldn't figure it out at first, but then it dawned on me that years ago as a child I tested very intolerant to all dairy, and the diet called for at least two glasses of milk a day, and some recipes contained cheese. And since the book's instructions were to absolutely not omit any food from the meal plan, I decided to can it.
I know for a fact that this diet has produced amazing results for some people. But if you have food allergies or sensitivities, make sure the meal plan doesn't include any of them, or you'll be disappointed (and not any thinner or healthier) as I am.
2 Wonderful Book if you give it a chance. Patience!
A couple of years ago, I was a poster child for T-Types. Skin and bones everywhere except for my love handles, belly, and cheeks. I am the classic T-Type. I had been eating all of the things you are supposed to eat when you are healthy (pastas, rice, etc.). Wrong!. If everyone followed the food pyramid the United States would sink into the ocean! I'm 5 foot 8 and when I was 26 I got up to 185 at one point. I was also drinking some pretty hearty beers. As Dr. Abravanel would put it, I was a skinny person who just happened to get fat! I exercised, ran, rode my bike, went to the gym. I could hardly shake any weight. I would reward myself for exercising with some pasta and french bread. I also love sweets. Fat-free candy must be good for you cause it has no fat in it right? My mom gave me her old-school copy of this book and soon she bought me the revised edition. I'm not a big fan of commitment and it was really hard to start this diet. It was easy for a while. I lost 10 pounds the first week. I lost a total of about 15 pounds after a few weeks. I continued to lose weight but eased off the diet. It took a really long time and the weight came back. I decided to go back on it and after about 3 weeks lost between 20-25 pounds. I now weigh 150 pounds. This is what I weighed when I was 16 years old. I have no gut anymore. It's all gone. I also hike and ride bicycles when I can. If you want to sit on the couch and be a tater the weight will come off more slowly. If you exercise for an hour a day and 4 or 5 days a week, you will drop weight like a bad habit. I can guarantee it. If you are a T and eat a lot of protein, I suggest you drink as much water as possible to clean the toxins from the meats out of your body. I hope this works for you like it has for me. I also cheat a lot and don't gain the weight back (beer, coffee, etc.)
3 Thank You Dr. Abravanel!
I bought this book because it sounded pretty unique to me, the good rating, and what really got my attention was how much weight some of the reviewers said they lost in such a short amount of time while feeling great. I've lost about 20 lbs in 3 weeks, continuing to lose 1/2 to 1 1/2 lbs. daily, and I do feel a lot better.
4 Yes, it does really work
I read the reviews before I bought, and I thought I'd be good for an average of 2 pounds a weeks. Can I just say 5 pounds first week!! Yes I did taper off to about 2 pounds a week since, but it is working for me. There was no question what type I was (T), and all the eggs haven't gotten to me yet. I can admit I have cheated, but it hasn't really slowed my progress. I'm looking forward to the next few weeks, reading the scale and being happy instead of disappointed
5 so far it works! :-)
I never done any serious dieting before, but this book caught my attention it does show you how to eat healthy foods that keep you satisfied. My cravings also have been reduced. I'm a G Type. I've been on the BT Diet for 2 weeks now and dropped one dress size. I just wanted to loose 10 pounds and have lost half the weight in just 2 weeks! This book also has an interesting exercise plan which I follow 3-4 times a week. I do recommend it.
6 good info...hard to follow
The info in this book is great, but it requires TOO much of a life change to stick to. Some of the suggestions make perfect sense, while others are just excessive...
7 Really good outlook on life
Now I understand why I am the way I am. You take a checklist questionare to find out which of your glands is dominant. He explains why you crave the foods you like: You are looking for a quick fix to stimulate your designated glad. This would be okay, but your glands tire out. Tired out glands can no longer regulate the fat deposits on your body and you become overweight. The focus of this book is to go on a diet that will bring your glands back into balance. Once you are in balance your designated gland can control your weight once again. This is not a blueprint to loose a couple of pounds and then go back to your normal diet. This is a complete diet change. Buy this if you are looking for long term results. It tells you why some diets and exercises work for some people and don't work for others. Very motivating!
8 Coming back to a sure winner!
I read the older version of this book 13 years ago and it made so much sense, the description of my body type was so perfect, that I just had to try it. I went from 161 lbs. to 143 lbs. in one 4 week cycle. I hadn't weighed that little since BEFORE high school. Also, friends and co-workers were amazed at the change in my emotional state. No more mood-swings! Unfortunately, I slowly reverted back to old eating habits...and it still took me an ice cream, chocolate, caffeine binge 4 months later to START GAINING WEIGHT AGAIN! Amazing.
Knowing my body type has meant that at various times over the years I have been able to simply apply my basic body type principles in order to control my weight. During my first pregnancy I gained only 17 lbs. thanks to Dr. Abravanel's principles and 3 weeks after giving birth I was smaller than when I got pregnant!
Here's the really amazing part. I didn't follow his plan religiously. I'm a T-Type and did the 2 eggs breakfast but would use margarine to cook my eggs. I hate doing lunch so did Slimfast instead. My hubby was A-Type and got dessert, so occasionally I'd "reward" myself with a small cup of ice cream. Those kinds of things. And WITHOUT EXERCISE I STILL got these awesome results.
I have never felt so balanced and happy with myself. Now it's time to get serious about weight-loss and I'm buying the book again (my old one was borrowed and never returned). My sister and her hubby are doing the Atkins Diet and I decided it was "time" and that I'd do the diet I trust. I've always been a huge fan of this book and have referred everyone I know to it when they wanted to lose weight. I told my sister about it and she might even switch over from Atkins! Can't wait to get the book and show it to her!
Two days ago I started following the guidelines I remember and I can't believe how quickly my cravings have faded...not gone...but definitely faded. It takes little effort to get through them now, and my "snack" definitely helps!
Sure hope the book gets here soon since I'm excited to see what's been added! Good luck to all you folks working to get yourself in balance! Try this book, it works!
9 Dr. Abravanel's Body Type Diet and Lifetime Nutrition Plan
What a Wonderful Food Plan! This book has literally changed my life. I found that I am a G-type. I've always been concerned about dieting and have done so all of my life. I've starved myself, yo-yoed up and down, joined Weight Watchers, and have just generally been concerned about my weight.
In recent years, I have had a great deal of difficulty losing weight no matter what I've done. I never felt like I was eating very much and would eat half portions -- much less than anyone else did. When I began the food plan, I was concerned that I was eating too much but forced myself to eat the amount of food Dr. Abravanel suggested eating in his book for my body type. To my amazement I lost weight.
The plan has been so easy to follow (even whe I go out to eat -- no fast food for me). Very little measuring, etc. Now I know what foods are best for me and finally, after all these years, I'm eating healthy, nutritious foods. I'm taking care of my body and have so much confidence in making my food choices now. I will never be overweight again! I've never been confident enough to say that before.
I think the spacing of meals really helped me burn calories and eating MORE of the right kind of foods were the keys to my weight loss. This food plan guarantees me success in maintaining my weight loss. Thank you, Dr. Abravanel!
10 A lifetime eating plan that makes sense.
Dr. Abravanel's concept about balancing the body is based on the ancient form of Ayurveda. At first the concept seems too simple and if you are a skeptic you might pass this one by. Reading the book cover to cover and following the suggestions can add to your life. I also hired a Body Type Counselor and it has just added to the experience. In the near future I am planning on taking the training. If you are interested in eating real food which will satisfy your cravings while being wholesome and healthy, this is the lifestyle change for you. In the simplest statement the foods you may be the most attracted to might not benefit your immune system and energy level.
11 Confusion over type leads to failure
After trying the Zone diet and finding that it worked up to a point,I turned to the Body Type diet to break off a plateau. I found it did not work.
Supposedly, I am a T-type, but I found that the more I read about the other types, P and A--I could have been typed as one of those too! I was certain of only one thing--I was not a G-type. First of all, the pictures depicting the types are simply awful, giving generalized physical traits that again I could say typified me. Yes, I did take the test which investigates your cravings, your fat gaining patterns and your overall outlook, but even on these issues, over the years, after adhering to so many different dieting philosophies I have found that my cravings have changed as my nutrition education increased. Quite frankly, I could not remember what I "craved" twenty years ago! After childbearing, I could not remember where I gained my fat prior to the monumental hormonal event of pregnancy!
In spite of my confusion, I did try the T-type diet, thinking that since this type was the type allotted me after taking the test, I should at least try it. I found that after practising the Zone, where I was eating more fresh vegetables and fruit, this diet added grain which ADDED weight rather than eliminated it. The induction portion of this diet where one eats mainly the type-specific vegetable soup did not inch me off my plateau either. Bottom line was I either did not type myself accurately or the diet just didn't work for me.
This particular edition of the book contains updated exercise information which while interesting I also found confusing. Supposedly, T-types should do stretching and relaxing exercises, but common sense tells us that a little weight training and aerobics certainly is beneficial for all! Where, other than in Dr. A's experience and practice, is his exercise---or for that matter, his entire--- theory proved?
As with any of the other fad diets, this diet has its newletter, website and expensive supplements specifically designed to benefit each type. There seems to be many happy converts to this dieting system--sadly,I was not one of them.
12 Best Diet Yet
I love this diet. It is the only one that has actually given me great results quick! I definatley reccomend it if you want to see big results in less than a week! I have been on this T-type body type diet for one week and have lost an inch in my waist and 7 lbs! After I had my baby I thought I was doomed to be overweight forever, but this has given me real inspiration. It is not hard to follow and the Rasberry Leaf Tea idea really seems to work. Five stars!
13 Hypothyroid - IT WORKS!
I've been battling hypothyroid desease for 3 years now. I've gained more weight then I could ever have imagined. I've tried every diet and work out regement with no success. My accupuncturist gave me an old copy of Dr. Abravanel's book, and on a whim, I started the diet two days later. Well its been two weeks now and I've lost 4 lbs! As a hypothyroid patient, this is a huge accomplishment.
I am now inspired to continue!
It is easy to follow, reasonable and precise. I've even incorporated tofu as an additional protein. As of today, I highly recommend it.
14 2 weeks....7 pounds off......feeling great!
Reading this book - was like the penny dropping in my head. It makes sense - and it appears to be working! People are different, shaped differently, thinking differently, craving different foods, getting high on different exercise regimes.... and that's the key to this book. What works for some, be it Atkins, Sugar Busters, Weight Watchers....whatever (believe me - I've tried them all!!!)....doesn't work for everyone else. Buy this book - and even if you only adopt one of the changes for your Body Type, it will be a step in the right direction.
15 Lists, lists and more LISTS
This book is very similar to Jay Cooper's the Body Type, except that this one doesn't really mention amounts and concentrates more on lists and lists of food. My main beef with it is that it doesn't really give scientific rationale for a lot of things, such as why T-Types HAVE to eat the whole egg. I confess, however, that it really boils down to the diet NOT WORKING. This is the same problem I had with Body Type--there are certainly not four body types; there are mixed ones. And for the latter, they are miserably lost with these types of books since mixed types present a completely different challenege and eating style not covered in the books. Alas.
16 It will change your life!
My husband followed Dr. Abravanel's Body Type Diet and Lifetime Nutrition Plan, and it had unbelievable results.
Each body type's plan is well described, and you see results very soon after you begin following the plan. After a while, your body gets balanced, and the weight comes off almost automatically, without any effort.
After about 6 weeks on the plan, my husband was losing about 1 pound a day. The plan is not hard, and you dont starve.
If you tried lots of diets, without results, give this plan a try. You will be amazed!
17 An answer to Prayer!
Hi my name is Alicia Vargas and I am 39 years old and a mother of 3 children and 1 granddaughter. I had never had an issue with weight. I quick smoking 3 1/2 years ago. Out of no where my weight started to increase I was 150 when I quit at about a size 9. I put weight on so fast I didn't know how to stop it. I have always been concience of what I eat but I could not stop the weight gain. I was so frustrated...I quit smoking to improve my health and the excess amount of weight I was carrying was causing me to be short of breath. 4 weeks ago my cousin gave me the book for my birthday. I said, to myself this is the last thing I am going to try. I have bought every weight loss pill, Atkins Diet, Drops in my water from plant extract, shakes and every exercise equipment that promised results in just 30 days. Only to get on the scale and still find myself at the same weight or more. Never did I feel satisfied and continued to crave carbs especially the week before my mentral cycle. I felt there was no hope I was dumed to be fat. I read the book, took the test, I am a Gonadal. I couldn't believe when I read the chapter pertaining to my body type. I felt like I was reading a horoscope. I read the plan for losing weight and begin the next day. I weighed in at 220 when I started and exactly 3 weeks after I went back to the my Chiropractor in absolute fear, as I did not want to stand on the scale. Closed my eyes to open them and find I had lost 17 1/2 pounds. I just stood there and cried in disbelief. Even better than losing the weight my energy level has sailed through the roof. I don't feel tired and sluggish anymore. My skin texture has changed. I had no cravings before or during my mentral cycle and my cramps were very light. I am on my 4th week now doing the last 5lb. portion for cleansing. It has truly been an answer to a very deperate plea. I know that a lot of research went into this book and I am so thankful as I could of never imagined feeling so great. My goal weight is 130lbs and I will continue the diet and excersise program until I meet my goal. I would love to send my picture to you from before and after. I have never been so content with food since I started this program. It is a life style change but one that is well worth the rewards. Thank you so very much this book it has impacted and changed my life forever.
Sincerely,
Alicia Vargas
18 Finally--a plan that works!
The older I get, the more difficult it is to lose weight. My metabolism is very low, so dieting is especially difficult. I have been trying to lose 35 pounds for the last five years. The plans that I have been using are more flexible programs which would match my lifestyle. Then I decided to bite the bullet and begin a structured program. Since using Dr. Abravanel's program, I have lost 18 pounds in six weeks. I feel wonderful--no headaches, more energy. I am a gonadal type--wide bottom. Any time that I lost weight in the past, my top half would get thin, and the bottom showed little improvement. In a short time, I have lost the weight all over. I hope to reach my goal of 35 pounds within the next two months.
19 One of the Few Things that Turns Out Better than Possible
I was ready to accept that after age 30 I was just going to be heavier than I wanted. I was not fat, just soft and in all the wrong places. This was a last try for me. Abravanel is a genius. My goal was 18 pounds. In 3 weeks I hit that exactly and then lost another 6 over the following month without even trying. And it all came from the problem areas from which I had never been able to lose. I am back at my college weight when I was a division I athlete which I NEVER thought I'd see again. It was not hard and actually easy compared to some other stuff I've tried. Its been 6 months since I hit my lowest weight and I remain there in spite of cheating with sweets and ice cream periodically. Buy the book, READ the book thoroughly first, then commit to following it. You can do anything for 3 or 4 weeks, especially when the rewards appear quickly. I do not get impressed easily but this program exceeded my wildest expecations and without any of the nutritional insanity of Adkins or the Zone. I'd rather be healthy and heavy than unhealthy and trim. Abravanel allows you to be healthy and trim. And its easier than you think it should be. Thank you, Elliot.
20 Body Type is the Key
Ignore the uninspired title and buy this book because it works. I have used it for years and given away so very many copies that Dr. A should give me a commission. He has authored other books, but this is the one to buy for your lifetime nutrition.
The single most identifier of body type in this book is "where a person gains weight." Where you gain weight indicates which gland in your body has taken over the controls and is the reason you are looking at extra weight on your frame---be it ten pounds or one hundred.
In all honesty, the mirror does not lie and Dr. A has done a considerable amount of research to validate his findings. Dr. A is a real doctor and the diet is healthy--no starvation or lack of essential vitamins.
You will find that once you do the body type diet, the lifetime nutrition guidelines for your body type are something you actually crave because you'll feel better when you follow them (not to mention maintain your weight).
21 This is definitely one of the better diet books, but....
Now, I am not overweight; however, I do watch my weight carefully because I don't want to become that way. Anyhow, having a weakness for sweets and a love of coffee, I've read various texts from various "experts" (generally, they're all part-right and part-wrong; but then, no one's perfect, right?) and chanced upon this book.
Dr. Abravanel is GREAT when it comes to describing people's types and what they crave and their basic dispositions. Basically, while we all have an adrenal gland, gonads, a thyroid, and a pituitary gland, each one of us is dominated by one particular gland and that causes us to behave a certain way and to have certain physical traits. Sounds crazy at first, but if you read the descriptions you can see people you know who definitely fit the bills. For instance, my dad looks like the A-type (adrenal gland dominant) guy who's overweight (yes, this book has illustrations of the different body types, both overweight and slim, so you can see which one you resemble the most); he loves a good drink; and he LOVES his steaks and fat and butter - ALL the things A-type folks do! Being personally a T-type (dominated by the thyroid, supposedly), I was definitely interested in what the good doctor had to say...
Here's where I have a couple of qualms I will share for you: The doctor says that if a person is unhealthy and/or overweight it's because their dominant gland is overworked. Thus, you need to let THAT gland rest and let ANOTHER gland at least temporarily "take over," if you will. OK, so far. However, for instance, he says caffeine will strain the thyroid gland -- I have yet to find conclusive evidence to back that up from anything I've read on the Web. He also says that coffee is OK for A-types. Think about it: Caffeine causes you to produce and release adrenalin. Where does adrenalin come from? The adrenal gland! He's contradicting himself a bit mite, eh?
Also, you might have trouble figuring out exactly which type you are. For instance, I myself have the personality and get the cravings of the T-type and yet have a physique closer to a P-type than a T-type (slim but not particularly defined and rather "boyish" than early thirty-ish). The doctor himself says in the book that you might have to see someone trained in his methodology to get that squared away, something you may or may not want to do.
So, yeah, the book's good in many respects; basically, every diet recommended for each type is healthy, and, as the author states, even if you mistakenly follow the wrong diet, it won't hurt you and you'll probably lose the excess weight anyhow, although you won't remove the underlying problem. But, by the same token, there's a couple of things, which I've mentioned, which don't seem to make sense.
22 I really did lose weight on this eating plan.
After discovering I had hypothyroidism, I had gained 25 pounds and I could barely get out of bed. I had been in denial about the weight gain until I discovered I could hardly get into any of my clothes. My boyfriend found this book for me and out of exsaperation I tried it. I had never been on a diet in my life. Within a week my energy surged and I found myself actually sticking to the diet. I didn't like having to count hours between meals but I went from a size 10/12 to a size 4/6. It's worth a try and your not starving. I went off the diet, but I am buying this book again today because I felt so much better.
23 Finally! The answer on "How to Feed My Body"!
Here's the manual on how to feed your body and make it run efficiently and with a happier outlook. I finally understand how to truly eliminate fatigue and cravings! The weight loss is just an added bonus. The explanations describing each body-type make it easy to understand not only your own body, but the cravings and weight problems loved ones.
I have recommended this book to many friends and relatives who are ALL finding success.
Here's an additional little tip - when making changes to your diet, try only one meal at a time for about a week. Example: Begin by changing your breakfast habits. Get successful at it for at least 5-7 days. Then try changing your lunch habits for 5-7 days. Then dinner. It's much less stressful to change things a little at a time. It also gives you time to develop eating strategies and menus.
Try it! You'll feel great....REALLY!
24 WISH I'D READ THIS YEARS AGO
This book has given me freedom with food. I spent years going to Overeaters Anonymous because I thought my food cravings were due to some deep and mysterious psyhcological problem! HA!
I am a T-type and was eating in the worst possible way I could! I did juice fasts. I was a vegetarian and suffering from chornic fatigue and made it through the day only by over-stimulating my thyroid, which made everything worse! There was nothing I could do, it seemed, to lose weight.
Now I eat for my type. I am astounded at how little I eat and how satisifed I feel. I have been losing weight effortlessly. AMEN!
Also, I should add that I used Dr. Clark's "The Cure for All Diseases" to get rid of my chronic fatigue virus and my food allergies. I do Dr. Abravnel's diet in conjunction with Dr. Clark's program. (Her program is not a diet.) If you are sick or just want to have more energy and vitality, you should absolutely pick up Dr. Clark's book. IT'S TRULY AMAZING.
25 Almost perfect, but not quite
I titled this review "almost perfect, but not quite", because I find it interesting that the author has changed and edited this book from a perviously released book. I found this book to be hard to follow without much help and support for the "lay" person. Try Jay Cooper's book, "The Body Code". In it I found much help in the exercise area with real life changing techniques to help with taping in on the "exercise high." I have never enjoyed exercising, until I tried Jay's techniques, I learned there is an actual "euphoria" experience achieved when exercising at my specific target heart rate. Dr. Abravanels book is okay, but why settle for okay when you can obtain GREAT!
26 It's Amazing!
I am so excited about this diet plan! I (like thousands of others) got caught up in the carbohydrate addicts diet plan that was on the Oprah Show. But I wondered how one single plan could work for everyone. When she had her follow-up show, half of the audience had lost weight, while the other half had gained - all while following the same diet. Now I know why! I also would see people that from the waist up they looked normal but from the waist down they were three times as big and I always wondered why some people looked like that. Now I know why! I also always wondered why my dad never really liked desserts or treats. I thought he was just weird. But now I know why! Our bodies are all different and respond to foods differently and put on fat differently - and so of course the same diet won't work for everyone. The trick is finding out what body type you are and how that body type responds to certain foods. Dr. Abravanel is very thorough and accurate in his book. He also goes into other areas besides diet, like exercise, supplements, stress, and health dangers. It's very well-rounded. He explains everything thoroughly and simply. I have lost 16 pounds the first month and I am truly not hungry. In fact, the first day I followed the plan I was so full that the next morning I could not bring myself to eat breakfast! I do have cravings for my "weakness foods", but they will subside as I continue to follow the plan and get my body back in balance. I feel that now I have the knowledge to conquer my weight - and it all makes so much sense. I recommend this book to anyone trying to lose weight or get more in balance physically.
27 It's Amazing!
I first looked into this book after a friend shared a success story of another friend who had followed this diet plan. I liked that this plan was individualized for different people. I had purchased the "carbohydrate addicts" book that was on the Oprah Show, but I felt that it was a plan for only certain people - and definitely not for all the mass numbers of people who were buying it! And that proved true when she did her follow-up show and many of the people who followed the diet didn't lose any weight and some even gained weight! Dr. Abravenel's book is specific to the type of body you have and how your individual body processes and stores fat. He gives lots of instruction and information so you can determine exactly what body type you are and understand how your body type works. I discovered I am a "T-Type", and I started the "T-Type Weight Loss Plan" a week-and-a-half ago and I've already lost 10 pounds! And I am not hungry! In fact, I am eating way more on this plan than I have on other plans. I do have occasional cravings for the foods I am most susceptible to, but in time they will subside. He also shows you which exercises and supplements are best for your particular body type - and which diseases your body type is most prone to. And you don't have to spend money buying special food because you just eat regular everyday food. I have been so excited about this program that I have gotten eight other people doing it too! I highly recommend this book to everyone!
28 Superb Book! (Body Type Diet)
This book is fabulous! A must-read for anyone wanting to be slim, trim, & healthy. (Easy to understand)
29 Superb Book! Body type diet...
This book has changed my life permanently for the better. It makes so much sense. I carry it with me to the grocery store. I love it. It really was the answer I was searching for, for the past 35 years! thanks.
30 Superb Book! Body type diet...
This book has changed my life permanently for the better. It makes so much sense. I carry it with me to the grocery store. I love it. It really was the answer I was searching for, for the past 35 years! thanks.
31 This Book Needed a 90's update, especially with exercise
Dr. Abravanel/Elizabeth King have obviously been threatened by Jay Cooper's book The Body Code, and felt it necessary to update their eairler publication. Congratulations, your book is certinally more well rounded. Just keep writing books, and stay away from your "Skinny Schools" and you will probably be more creditable this time around.
32 The diet is easy to follow and the recipes are delicious.
I have experienced weight loss after following the guidelines in Dr. Abravanel's book for only 2 weeks.
33 It's simple and it works!
My 50 year old body decided to acquire a 12 pound spare tire over the past two years. Working out every day wasn't helping. I didn't think my regular diet was bad. But, I couldn't lose any weight. Then, a friend turned me on to this book and, WOW. I found out I was a T type. I started the program. It's been three weeks and I'm down almost 12 pounds and two waist sizes! Even though I'm still missing some of the things I really love to eat, I'm never hungry. This is a really intelligent approach to weight loss and learning to eat right.
34 An EXCELLENT way to start looking at diet, metabolism, weigh
I first found Dr. A's book 15 years ago, and read with interest. At that time I thought I was a G type, and not overweight, so wasn't interested that much in trying it. Then 10 years ago I married a vegetarian (an A type) and I went vege for 7 years. I was immediately so exhausted that I sat down at every opportunity, and just thought it was newlywed exhaustion! After having my child 5 years ago, I was so exhausted I was drinking about 10 - 12 cups of coffee everyday to survive! I hired a Body Type counseler and she typed me as a T type. Heaven! I started eating eggs voraciously and meat, fish, chicken, also glandular meats in the first few months to rev up the adrenals that had shrunk over the last 7 years and give my thyroid a rest. Interestingly I had thyroid disease during pregnancy and it took a long time for any one ( and several specialists) to figure out just what it was. I now know exactly what it was. Now I have been following the diet for three years. Coffee is down to decaf and I still want to eat a cookie in the afternoon, but if I do.....I get a sore throat. My body just can't handle the sugar after being off of it for so long. I have bought about 40 books and as a health care worker, whenever I meet someone who is lamenting their weight, I give them a copy....it is the bible as far as I am concerned, and I must add that Dr. de Adamo's book Eating Right for your Type, is a good follow up to fine tune things.
I started lifting weights about a year and a half ago, so I mostly have gotten bigger, since I lost alot of muscle as a vegetarian, and my shape became smaller....now I am about the size I was in high school and I have to admit that I went on the cellulite diet and didn't lose one pound! I need to try again I guess, and I can only encourage everyone to at least read this book, as I watch my coworkers and friends eat and it is so obvious that this Dr. A is on to something here....
35 Weight loss+increased energy+positive outlook on life....
About 15 years ago my friend found an article in a health magazine about Dr. Abravanel's Body Type Diet. I lost my pregnancy weight plus 10 pounds at that time. I felt great and wrote down the information but the weight crept back on over the years as life brought me stress with a teenager and new marriage, new job and two moves. I had given away the original magazine article but asked my friend if she had it. She replied that she had bought the book! I was so excited to get it because as I lost weight from the old article's information, I worried what I would do to maintain my ideal and healthy weight after I reached my goal. The book has an excellent eating maintainance plan that looks very good. Now I'm interested in the exercise part of the new 1999 edition because I noticed the lack of that information in the first book. I have always exercised and want to firm up and increase muscle tone for my maintainance program and I'm interested in what he has researched and has to say about my body type. I'm also interested in any menopausal information he may have about weight maintainance and use of soy products in the diet instead of dairy because of estrogen loss. The book answered all of my needs in the 80's and I look forward to Dr. Abravanel's guidance with his new edition in 1999 and the second half of my life!
36 If at first you dont suceed, try try try again
I found Dr. Abravanel's origional book through researching Jay Cooper's Book The Body Code on Amazon.com. I was intrigued by the number of negative reviews that appeared there that all mentioned Dr. Abravanel's work, so I went and bought Coopers book and the paperback version of Dr. A.'s. First I read Dr. A.'s book and was very confused and found it hard to get through. It certinally lacked substance in the exercise area(knowing that I was an Adrenal type it left me scratching my head, wondering what was best for me). Coopers book was very easy reading, answered my questions about exercise, and made me feel like I was about to embark on a journey that was reasonable, and easy to encorporate into my busy schedule. Obviously you have seen a need to up-date your book because of the increased interest in metabolic typing brought about by Coopers book and philosophies. Those of us who have a knowledge in health and fitness realize there was much research in this direction BEFORE your book, and are glad that through time and practial application of these methods, we can all benefit. Here's a thought "aren't we glad that they didn't stop scientific research when they discovered penicillin? Otherwise we would continue to have penicillin resistent infections without the benefit of new age antibiotics.
37 Finally, Someone understands!
I started reading Dr. Abravanel's book two days ago and now I carry it like the Bible. Consequently, I brought the book because of the hysteria over J. Cooper's book. In the past 5 years, I have tried to explain to everyone that regular diets don't work for me. I've tried weight watchers, prescription drugs, and I work out twice a day. The drugs made me drop weight, but I was so depressed that I had to get off them. I still work out twice a day to fight the inevitable weight gain. I put on 6 pounds. I tried to explain to family and friends that the usual 250 cal. breakfast, 350 cal. lunch and 550 cal. dinner did not work for me. Not only was I starving by 10am, but I craved foods I don't normally look for. Everyone said I'm just rebelling. "You can't accept the fact that you have to control your eating." It would make me so mad because I didn't feel that I was resisting. I really couldn't do it. This food program? I can do it. Yesterday was the first time in five years that I went to bed after a 1200 cal. day. I felt fine. Dr. Abravanel explained why I felt hungry. He identified the times I get those cravings. And, he acknowledges my difficulty with weight loss. I can't tell you how grateful I am. I feel like someone dropped a box of hope at my doorstep. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!
38 It really works...
I found I was a G-type body type. After reading what my body needs & trying it, it got rid of my late evening cravings which I have stuggled with for years. It also helped "remove" my saddlebags that collected over the years. Even though I didn't lose actual pounds per the scale the first few weeks I tried it, I stayed with it and my legs started getting smaller. Finally after 4-5 weeks, the scale told me I was down 3 lbs. I lost all my cravings that were a result of my body being out of balance. His menu shows fruit & coffee for breakfast. It goes along with what my body has been like for eon...not wanting anyting but coffee for breakfast. I love fruits, and found out that is what my body needs a lot of. So I can see that this is the right diet and life- style for me...he's telling my mind something that my body has known for years, only I needed him to let me know that. This is a very easy plan to follow..whether at home or on the road. Very logical and correct way of eating. Thanks, Dr. A
39 Greatest Thing Going
I found this book on the free book table at the public library this month. I started on the G-Type diet just today and I must say it sure seems to be easier to follow than most diets I have tried. The only question I have concerning this book relates to the review by Elizabeth King on Amazon.com. The review says that there is a newsletter now available and I would like to know if anyone has any information on how to obtain this newsletter. If anyone knows please Email me at Happyhooker99@hotmail.com and I would really appreciate the information. Thank you and Good Luck to all who already have or are thinking of joining me on this diet.
40 First time I ever dieted. Lost 30 lbs in about 9 weeks.
Well, I rolled my eyes when my wife came home with this book. Thyroids and adrenals .. right! I've spent the last 20 years packing on 30 excess lbs, so I was ready to try it. It really didn't take much will power. I was able to eat plenty of things I like and was already eating. Never went hungry, but had to get used to eating more regularly. I did have to cut out caffeine, sugars and starchs, and highly refined grains. More steak and eggs than I've had in years. The diet they recommend for you will depend on your particular body type and requirements. I was really amazed! The fat came off really fast, and I got my metabolism back. I dropped to about 5 lbs below my target college years weight and leveled off. Even cheating all through the holidays (can't offend the folks that made all those cheesecakes and pies), I've stayed within a 4 lb range, and it came back off in a few days. I'm really impressed with this plan. I'm copying this web page to hand out to all the people who keep asking what happened.
41 I lost 35 pounds!
This book contains four different diets based on body type and which glands we tend to overstimulate. It's a little tough to follow, but you get plenty of food! Basically, though, you have to cut back on your favorites and cultivate a taste for some of your least favorite foods. The good news is that it gives you an eating plan for life. The hardest part for me was the timing of the meals, as I work two jobs. Also, I try to stay away from dairy (bovine growth hormone, etc.) and there is no way to contact the writers for information on substitutions. (I've tried searching them on the web) I like the fact that the book is so affordable - I can buy lots of copies for friends!
