1 A Great Family Movie
There were so many great family movies in the sixties.Along with those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines,Chitty Chitty Bang Bang & The Scarecrow Of Romney Marsh these are my favourites. All are on dvd except Scarecrow,What a pity Disney dosen't feel the need to release a dvd version of Scarecrow i'm sure it would be a big seller. If they are thinking of remaking it that would be a mistake for no one could portray the Scarecrow like Patrick Mcgoohan it's his portrayal along with the overall entertainment of the movie that still enthralls us some 40 years later despite limited viewing.Disney, please do us all a favour and release The Scarecrow on DVD soon.A remake wouldn't do.
2 Dr. Syn on DVD
I agree with the whole lot of you! This was Disney at their finest, yet they won't release this on DVD. So I recommend all Dr. Syn fans go to http://disneyvideos.disney.go.com/moviefinder/products/0018903.html and click the link to let them know you want to be informed when it's released on DVD - if enough of us do it, mayhaps they'll be motivated to get it out to us!
3 DISNEY, GET OFF THE DIME!!!!!
Gosh, darn it Disney!!!! What are you waiting for...I was a kid growing up in the mid-60's, strong values, good intentions, a bold curiousity for the future. The Scarecrow rocked, he was sooo cool. I mean, Patrick McGoohan, Mr. Secret Agent Man, himself as a, sort of, 18/19th century Robinhood/James Bond. When I was a kid, I can remember first seeing him on Disney and thinking to myself, "what a guy, I want to marry him." Now that I read these blogs on the internet, I too agree, it is high time that Disney release this boomer oriented classic of the mid-60's. Please, Disney, I beg of you. From: A Starving Fan.
4 One of the Best of Disney
This was by far one the best three part movies that Disney ever made. I am heartbroken that Disney has not released it along with some of their other movies on DVD. Far more entertaining than "Lt. Robin Crusoe" or "The Moon Spinners" I can't believe they are not anxious to get this one on DVD too. I am sure that most families would want to add it to their library of DVDs. Patrick McGoohan and the rest the cast were outstanding in this adventure of a man disquised as a scarecrow at Romney Marsh set during the American revolution. He attacks the King's men and rescues people in trouble. I grew up on these with the Wonderful World of Disney and have waited far to long for this to be out. I recall this and the Swamp Fox were two of my all time favorties. Now many years since I have seen it on Disney I wondered if they had put it on DVD yet since they have released a great number of the movies they showed on the Wonderful World of Disney including "The Great Locomotive Chase" and "Johnny Tremain". If you enjoy Disney live action movies you will love this one. Please Disney studios get this one out on DVD soon!
5 DITTO! We need to write directly to Disney.
Disney may have just distributed it in the U.S. I'm not sure, but may have been filmed and produced by a British Company. Regardless, we need Disney to unleash this... it was a big part of MY childhood too!!!
6 We loved this as kids
When we were children we watched Scarecrow in awe. I remember one night when Disney was showing the preview for the next week. We all jumped up screaming when we saw it was going to be scarecrow.
I remember the 3 oldest ( I was third ) dressing up in scarecrow outfits to play as we loved this so much. Disney really needs to get this out on DVD so those of us that remember can view it again. I haven't seen this for probably about 35 years and yet still want to see it again. It just shows that a quality show will stand the test of time.
Come on Disney ! ! The people are talking ! ! are you listening ?
7 Would Love to See it Again...Come on Disney
I remember seeing this while in early grade school in the 60's and thought it was outstanding. I actually forgot about this Disney effort until I stumbled across it while searching the web. I'd love to see it released on DVD. I'm sure that it would hold up well even today...an excellent story. Get on the ball Disney.
8 What the heck is Disney thinking?
Like other reviewers here, I have strong memories of Patrick McGoohan's Scarecrow. In fact, it made more impact on me than any other episode in many years of childhood viewing of Disney's Sunday night Worlds. So why has Disney elected to cancel this DVD release without explanation? Disney must be well aware of the fan interest. Have they still concluded there is no market? Are there technical or legal issues? Are they holding it because of some future project? Check the disneyvideos website and you will see the title does not appear in their release calendar, which currently lists titles to November 2005. You can, however, if you search their site for Dr. Syn, register your interest in seeing Scarecrow released. You will also find mailing addresses for Disney and BV Home Entertainment where you could make your case in writing.
Update: I see Tom Hering's Scarecrow of Romney Marsh website is now citing insider information that Disney may be trying to restore and remaster the original full length TV version but has been hampered by loss of some of the original negative elements. He speculates the earliest possible release date may now be late 2006. It may be an opportune time to let Disney know directly of your interest in this title.
9 And I thought I was alone...
Wow... after reading the list of messages I'm in awe. I thought for sure I was the only one harbouring a deep, deep need to see what I thought was a long-forgotten movie once again. To find out that so many people are drawn to this movie after 40 years and have had it embedded in their psyche all this time... Come on, Disney.... you've GOT something here!!! Get it released!!! And not the short version, please! Ok.. maybe it's just me.. but a number of people have mentioned how scary the movie was. Me.... I fell head over heels in love with Patrick McGoohan...and I'm not even sure how old I was. I do confess that I have another reason to get my fingers on this one... I'm curious as to whether Bob Anderson, sword/stunt master of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings fame, had a role in the series/movie. His name does not appear as part of the cast in the numerous websites devoted to the cause so he might have been a stunt coordinator. Any hints or insight?
10 Dr. Syn Alias the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh
I, like so many others who have written, fell in love with this movie as a kid in the 60's. It scared the daylights out of me, but I loved it. It was the song that always stuck with me and when I got older I discovered it on vhs and it all came back. I'm 43 now and my 6 year old has watched the vhs tape since he was 3, and he loves it too. I found an original Disney poster for it on eBay and it hangs in my office. Considering I am a priest, I get a few laughs about it when people see it. Dr. Syn is one of the few portrayals of my calling on film that is not an embarassment.
Here's a piece of free advice that would make them a another fortune (and I only mention it because I would like to see it) Re-make it with Johnny Depp and adapt his character Capt. Jack. If you read the original novels, the Vicar became the dred pirate Capt. Clegg before returning to Dymchurch as their cleric and smuggling leader.
Oh and release this classic on DVD to boost the interest first.
11 Come ON, Mickey! Conjure Up This Movie!
As a ten year old girl, I was absolutely swept up in this story. It probably says something (pathetic) about me that I was creating fan fiction (if only in my head) in which my Mary Sue Alter Ego was riding with the Scarecrow. I suspect that it was this film that warped me for life. (Oh wait, no, that was the Legion of Super Heroes.) This had it all: horses! swords! disguises! danger! bravery! heroics! and a cool title song!!!
Now, I realize it is some forty years later and I may be looking back fondly through a HUGE fog of nostalgia, but that movie has stayed with me. The scenes at the inn. The horses pounding along the shore ahead of the army. Our Heroes hiding in the barn. And can ANYONE forget the "hanging" of the man who betrayed the Scarecrow? I remember more scenes and lines of dialogue than from a lot of the newer Disney offerings.
Why are they so reluctant to release it? Do they think we baby boomers are going to last forever? Disney, you're sitting on what could be one of your biggest sellers EVER and for what? Please release it and soon. Thousands of nostalgic people will definitely reward you!
12 DisneyBland
It's so ridiculous yet typical for Disney to delay this project. The real question is, why are they releasing a shorter version? The ORIGINAL 3 part Wonderful World Of Color version is longer than 129 minutes. Disney has a cash cow on their hands, but they're more interested in releasing dumbed down pap to medicate the kiddies. May the mouse burn in eternal hellfire.
13 Dr. Syn alias the Scarecrow
AAAAAAAAARGH!!!! Delayed again. We have been waiting for years for this release and it is dumb beyond belief that Disney won't release it. I worked at Disney World for 10 years and have seen them do some dumb things but this is the grand prize on the dumb award list.
14 There's a petition!
I love this movie -- historical connotations and all -- I remember watching it as a child and I want to see the whole thing NOW! I can sing the theme song chorus for pete's sake -- but I won't.
OK, ranting over.
I was inspired by other reviews to google it -- there's a petition here that has a draft letter and a link to Buena Vista requesting the best possible edition -- heck, maybe they decided to upgrade it and that's why they pulled it -- who knows.
here's the link: http://users.msworldnet.com/tomhering/page_10.htm
(If Amazon doesn't post it, just google scarecrow of romney marsh)
15 All we've got are the memories...Disney has the film
Reading the other reviews I realize now why I never saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show, I watched "The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh" instead. After 40 years, this show remains vivid in my memory. Over the years since, I've only seen one VHS copy of this available (as a rental), and I nearly wore it out making sketches for a Halloween costume while taking my kids trick-or-treating.
What I really found hard to believe, was having to explain to dozens of my contemporaries, where I got the idea. They had never seen the show! Neither have my children who are grown and gone now (what an opportunity Disney [read Eisner] missed).
All the other reviews are demanding, begging, and pleading for Disney to follow through on their plans to release this on DVD. You can add my voice to that list and I echo many of their assessments of Disney "quality" of late.
So I have to ask...what happens to Disney (Scarecrow) fans that have grown up? They become Star Trek fans and Farscape fans and Dr. Who fans, etc. Why? Because Disney didn't try to keep our attentions.
Disney, give us something to come back to. The Boomers you're ignoring are the largest segment of the population; and we're the ones with the disposable income remember? So...there's an emotional plea and some business logic. Disney, just do the right and RELEASE NOW!!!! I just can't see a clamoring in twenty years for you to re-release "Home on the Range".
16 Dr. Syn, Alias the Scarecrow
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!! I would like to know what the holdup is with releasing this movie on DVD. It was supposed to have been out in August. It is now nearly November. It's really a great movie for the whole family. So, PLEASE put it out on DVD ASAP.
17 Dr. Syn (Alias the Scraecrow)
Yo Disney! Take a break from the cartoon movies and produce Dr.Syn on DVD. This movie is one of the best ever, since it relys on true acting and NO computer imagery or special effects Many other old movies (some Disney) are out on DVD now and they are great! Personally, I think the Scraecrow is laughing at YOU, Disney, for not producing this earlier.
18 Dr. syn, alias the scarecrow
Hey all you scarecrow fans...I just looked up this title on netflix and it is available there and I presume as a DVD with a running time of 1:29.....is this what you guys are looking for?
19 Frustrated
When I watched this movie as a boy on "The wonderful world of Disney" all those years ago, It was named "The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh", shown over three episode's. I can still hear that unmistakable laugh after the opening credits. This movie is an absolute Classic.
Year's later, I saw this in a video rental shop, re-named Dr Syn, Got it out to view and found to my horror, that they had condensed it down to only 90 odd minutes, (Disney, what were you thinking), then saw to my delight that Disney were going to release it on DVD. And checking the technical details on this site suggested, that it's going to be of the orignal length, which is tremendous, but what baffle's me is why Disney is stalling on this release. So like my fellow reviewers, I echo there words, Disney get your A into G and get this DVD released.
I'm certain it would give many people, people who have seen it great pleasure again and to the new viewer, a chance to see this movie, as all the old fans who see it, (A timeless Gem).
20 WHAT'S THE HOLDUP?
I've been anxiously awaiting the release of this on DVD - it was supposed to be last month. At a time when there is a scarcity of decent family movies to watch, Disney decides to sit on their tushies and not release one of the best movies they ever put out! I repeat, WHAT'S THE HOLDUP?
21 We are most seriously displeased by Disney's delay
Our daughter grew up addicted to The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh and has been looking forward to the release of this DVD for months. She has been telling her college friends about it as well to drum up more interest. What a disappointment to find out that the release plans have apparently been dropped. This is one of the very best Disney programs and should be made available.
22 Disney.....you're killing me!!!!
I was anxiously awaiting Scarecrow to be released on DVD when I received notice from Amazon that it was not coming out yet. I re-read the email 5 times because I was sure I was reading wrong. And yes, I'm heartbroken. I have a old, old, old tape of the Scarecrow that I recorded back in the 1980's directly from TV. After all these years, the sound and picture are awful, I think it's dry rotted by now. This is an absolutely fantastic movie, Patrick McGoohan is awesome. The Scarecrow is a very important part of my childhood. Come on Disney, I'm desperate here! Stop torturing me and release it on DVD!!!
23 Disney Delays Dr. Syn (again)
Dr. Syn was one of the greatest of the World of Disney films, in the same league as Davey Crocket, but Disney keeps refusing to release it on DVD. This is the second time that the release date for Dr. Syn has been pushed back. First it was scheduled for November 2003, then Aug 2004, now it is May 2005. Speculation on the internet suggests that current Disney management does not want an old made for TV release to compete with their new films (Home on the Range is due out in September) because it makes their new movies loook bad (which they have been lately). Hey Eisner, who do you think that you are fooling?? If Disney continues to rest upon their laurels, then they should at least release the movies that their laurels were originally based on.
24 May 5, 2005
Amazon.ca (Amazon Canada) has relisted the release date of the Dr. Syn DVD from August 3, 2004 to May 5, 2005. I am not sure why Amazon.com has not listed the new release date; the release date in the USA and Canada should be the same.
25 Disney, why do you torture us so?
If Disney was smart (and I'm not so sure anymore...see their stupidity surrounding Fahrenheit 9/11), they would have ALREADY released this WONDERFUL movie! Don't they realize how many thousands and thousands of people remember this from their baby boomer childhoods? We're all out here with our little credit cards waiting to buy, Buy, BUY!
Okay, I'm on my knees begging... Please Michael, before you're gone, please do this one last little thing before the Board kicks you out. Release The Scarecrow on DVD. I'd really appreciate it!
26 Dr. Syn, Alias the Scarecrow
Scarecrow! Scarecrow! Scarecrow! Scarecrow!Scarecrow! Scarecrow! Scarecrow! Scarecrow!Scarecrow! Scarecrow! Scarecrow! Scarecrow!Scarecrow! Scarecrow! Scarecrow! Scarecrow!Scarecrow! Scarecrow! Scarecrow! Scarecrow!Scarecrow! Scarecrow! Scarecrow! Scarecrow!Scarecrow! Scarecrow! Scarecrow! Scarecrow!Scarecrow! Scarecrow! Scarecrow! Scarecrow!Scarecrow! Scarecrow! Scarecrow! 27 The Greatest Scary Movie for a Little Kid
I too was one of those that the Scarecrow gave nightmares to. It is a great movie about a great time in history whether it is true or not. I would love to see it again and that is why I put my order in in March, 2004. I want it. Please let Disney know.
28 I can't imagine why Disney cancelled the re-release...
This movie is such a sure hit, if marketed correctly, that it makes me wonder if Disney is thinking of remaking it. Could that be why they cancelled a re-release...?
29 Wha-happened to August 3, 2004?
I was stoked when I saw that the Scarecrow was coming out on DVD. I even marked it on my calendar. But when I recently re-checked here on Amazon I found out that it was not coming out at all anymore. What happened? C'mon Disney, give it up! You don't seem to have any trouble getting out such classics as Bedknobs and Broomsticks!
30 The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh
I was so pleased to discover others who still remember and cherish this great film as much as I do. I've not seen it since childhood (back in the late 60's) on the Wonderful World of Color (Disney). I used to have the 45rpm of the title song my friends and me would listen to over and over and over again in great anticipation for the gouhlish laugh at the end of the song. This is too great a Disney Classic to be kept from the public. C'mon Disney we need to see a movie about a real hero not these computer animated flops Hollywood keeps producing. I'd be forever grateful.
31 Dr.Syn is great
As a child I remember when this came on tv I was terrified of the scarecrow and every time he came on screen I would hide behind the tv. This is a great movie I got a copy of it a few years back and wouldn't trade it for the world. Disney please put it out on DVD my tape is wearing out.
32 Dr Syn, The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh
The quality of the movie was ahead of it's time because everytime it aired it was like the movie was recently made because of the clarity of the film. Disney had several series such as Gallagher and Toby Tyler but none of them was the equal of the Scarecrow. Patrick McGoohan went on to do Secret Agent, the Prisoner and several episodes of Columbo but his best role was the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh. I anxiety look forward to the release to DVD.
33 If not August, how about before Halloween?
I'd just like to add my voice to all the others who would like to see Disney release this on a DVD. I like so many others remember watching this Disney series. All the kids on my block made "Scarecrow masks" out of paper bags and we chased each other on our bikes. I hope Disney will release this before my own children grow old and leave the house. I'm thinking this would make a great Halloween gift for all the Scarecrow fans. Come on Disney--come through for all your loyal fans! (You'll make lots of money too).
If you read this review and agree with it add a complimentary review of your own to show your support for the DVD release.
34 Childhood Memories
As a child, I remember watching the Wonderful World of Disney when the 3 part mini series was first aired. We were all huddled on the floor of the family room in our PJ's, glued to the TV.
Of all the Disney films, Scarecrow is the one that I remember most vividly. As kids we made our own costums and played Scarecrow instead of Superman.
I have to get a copy.
35 DVD Release?
The studio had a release date for this DVD of August, 2004. I'm disappointed that it seems to have reversed itself. This movie (or series) is a classic and with a little marketing to those unfamiliar from this genearation it would do very well. (I wonder if the current Disney studio is afraid to compete with this level of quality from the past?!)
36 The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh
This is an outstanding tale of real courage and finesse during the royal tyranny of 18th century England. We need this film on DVD now! The character of Dr. Syn, played by Patrick McGoohan, is a genuine role model. In my opinion, this is McGoohan's best role and all of his are good.
37 Yea, where did the Scarecrow go?
Yea, where did the Scarecrow go? I share Robert Wheeler's thoughts - and frustration! I was looking forward to this DVD release with anxious anticipation - as a big fan of Patrick McGoohan and as a fan of this fantastic film. Disney seemed to be releasing a lot of its older live action films, and this is probably one of the top! Disney, wake up!
38 create a full feature movie
I love watching the scarecrow as a kid. And now, in a time when comic strips are being made into full length movies and remakes of the original televison series, I believe that if there were a remake of "The scarecrow", It would be a box office hit.Can somebody get the message to the disney studios?
39 Wha' Hoppen?
Does anybody have any information on what happened with this DVD? A release date was announced a few months ago (I received my pre-order alert from amazon.com); now that date has disappeared, and hasn't been replaced. I checked Disney's website, and it doesn't appear on their release schedule. What gives? More importantly, when's it coming out?
40 The Scarecrow was my hero
I was so excited when I found out that Disney was rereleasing The Scarecrow. I loved this show when I was a kid. Dr. Syn was my hero and I fell head over heels in love with Patrick McGoohan. The new generation will probably love this movie as much as we did back then. In fact, I chose watching this over the Beatles debut on Ed Sullivan. Thank you Disney for giving us Scarecrow lovers what we have been waiting for.
41 Dr. Syn, Alias the Scarecrow
Come on Disney - what are you waiting for ? This movie is one of the all-time best. I am a 48-year old who remembers vividly the fascination of watching this series back in the 1960's. I have gone to several Halloween parties dressed and made-up as 'The Scarecrow', and each year at the beginning of autumn I search high and low for two things (and have yet to find them): a really scary scarecrow Halloween decoration and a DVD of the full 135 minutes of the Disney classic. So what do you say Disney ? ---
P-L-E-A-S-E !!!
42 So, how long is it? 90 min. or 135 min? Why don't you tell?
I'd dearly love to see Dr. Syn the Scarecrow reissued, complete and in good form. But has it been? The whole 3-part series is 135 minutes long; various reviewers warn us of a 90-minute condensed version. Here what have we.....well, Amazon doens't really say, do they? Caveat emptor. If Disney smartens up and makes the whole product available (and Lord knows they could do it any time they want to), I'll snap one up right away. Until then......methinks not.
43 Will the Scarecrow Of Romney Marsh ride again???
What is Disney waiting on??? Ever since THE SCARECROW OF ROMNEY MARSH first aired on Disney back in the early 1960's I have remembered the sound of that screeching laugh and of course the Scarecrow song by Terry Gilkyson. The film was both scary and exciting all at the same time and made Halloween seem spookier than ever. The actors were chosen carefully as were the costumes, even the atmosphere of the film was perfectly eerie. No one could have played Dr. Syn as effectively as Patrick McGoohan did. He gave the part the contrast it needed between good and evil and all the gray area in between. THE SCARECROW OF ROMNEY MARSH is by far my favorite Disney film of all time. Other Disney films of a similar nature were THE MOONCUSSERS and THE LEGEND OF YOUNG DICK TURPIN. Disney Treasures should release these great films on DVD accompanied by the soundtracks.
44 The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh
I would echo others in urging Disney to release this action packed family adventure on dvd soon. It's a must-see for any Patrick Mc Goohan fan. He was perfectly cast, and I saw the three-part version when it first came out. I would also like to add that if anyone at Disney reads this, please issue the long, (135-min) version, of the combined 3 part series. The 90-min. abbreviated version that was making the rounds 20 years ago was far too short.
45 Bring the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh to ride again on DVD..
First, I'm a 31 year old and I'm using the kids format. My little brother and myself truely love this great classic of a movie. The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh is Dr. Syn, the town vicar or minister who is loyal to the British Crown, but when darkness comes, he changes his idenity from the loyal minister to a most feared ghostly figure who is only known as 'the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh.' The person who plays the part of the Scarecrow and the vicar is non-other than the great British actor Patrick McGoohan, known for his work in The Prisoner and Secret Agent. I like the old movies made by Disney, including 'The Great Locomotive Chase', Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone, and the Herbie movies, Dr. Syn Alias the Scarecrow should be brought back too. Please bring Dr. Syn Alias the Scarecrow back on DVD and VHS format.
46 Disney HAS TO release this
When I was a kid Disney was a Sunday night must. The Scarecrow was one of my favorites. Now that I have kids of my own my son has become attached to Zorro. Disney needs to release the programs that the "Baby Boomers" grew up with so we can share them with our families.
47 Is Disney scared to release Scarecrow on DVD?
Haunting and eerie adventure filmed in glorious technicolor!
What early Disney color films did so well is use rich and moody color. Seeing this film as a child on our first RCA color television has emblazened its memory in my cerebellum. That theme! I can still hear it now! Disney....read all these reviews and issue it on DVD now!
Oh, and lest I forget....ZORRO with Guy Williams also!
48 I loved this movie.
I remember this movie from my childhood. I couldn't wait until The Wonderful World of Disney showed it. I remember it was a three-parter. I actually liked it better than I liked The Wizard of Oz. Bring it out, Disney, so others can enjoy this fabulous movie. I'll buy the first copy!
49 I love this "lost" gem of a movie......Where's the DVD
When I was a little kid, I use to love watching Dr.Syn Alias the Scarecrow, I still remember the song that went with it. If Disney is looking at this review, I have only one favor to ask of them. Please re-release this timeless classic on both VHS & DVD format.
50 Dare to defy the Scarecrow?
Of all the disney television classics from the 60's, this has to be #1. The story of Dr. Syn, portrayed suberbly by Patrick McCoggan, is fantastic storytelling in the great disney tradition. What sets this film apart from the others is its unique blend of British actors and sets used in the film. I can still remember waiting all day Sunday as a kid for Walt Disney Presents when the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh would be shown. Trying to mimic the laugh of the Scarecrow as I rode my bicycle down the road with my buddies. Young or old, this is a true treasure worth watching anytime.
51 Scarecrow? Every man would sing!
5 stars, if a good DVD came out of it.
Yes, Disney should bring this one out in DVD format. I love it.
However, if it does not have some kid doing that arm pull-down thing and saying "Yes!" Disney does not think it will sell. Now that the total flop "Treasure Planet" bombed, maybe they will take the time to rethink what does and does not sell.
Bring back the Scarecrow to ride across the Romney Marsh again!
The thing is though, that the SCARECROW OF ROMNEY MARSH was made into three distinct episodes, The first about the Scarecrow, the second about the smuggler turning against the Scarecrow, the third about the escaped prisoners. The movie of it was cobbled together from those three episodes. If they make a DVD, they either need to re-edit to give it more continuity in the movie version, or do the three episodes.
52 McGoohan is magnificent!!
A much filmed story as Dr. Syn, Peter Cushing - Oliver Reed's version called Night Creatures are good, but this version done as a three part Disney production is outstanding. I saw this as a child and instantly fell in love with Patrick McGoohan, my first crush...lol, and have been a big fan ever since. It is a rousing tale of smuggling, of phantoms on the moor and outwitting the King's men. I have it on video, but would desperately love to see this one released on DVD.
It is a shame that Disney neglects the group of English based films they did in late 50's. There were some wonderful films such as Scarecrow that need release.
53 Scarecrow of Romney Marsh
I was a teenager when i saw the scarecrow of romney marsh on the Wonderful world of Disney, and about 30 years later i was able to
rent the movie from a video store. The movie was then called Dr. Syn Alias the Scarecrow. Needless to say over the years, the
tape wore out, and i would pay any amount to have the movie in
DVD. Patrick Mcgooan the actor who plays the scarecrow in the movie portrays him brilliantly. The movie is in my opinion a true classic, and should be rereleased in DVD. Hope it comes out
soon, hopefully by the end of 2002.
54 STILL WAITING !!!
I first watched this movie when I was eight years old and instantly knew I had to have a copy of it. However, in 1988 we did not have Amazon.com where we could buy our favorite films. Now that we have the Internet and Amazon.com, WE CAN'T GET IT !!
Disney should get off their behinds and release it on DVD so that the younger generation can watch a high quality film as we did without having to worry about " explicit adult content " like so many films contain today. If today's kids can watch this kind of film and be influenced by it, they might not grow up to be the GOD-hating people that we have so many of already. I can promise you that I will not buy another Disney movie untill this one is released!! DISNEY, RELAESE THIS FILM ON DVD NOW !!
55 PLEASE DISNEY PLEASE RELEASE THIS
I saw this phenominal film as a child in the 60's on "The Wonderful World of Disney". Then it was serialized into three episodes. As a child, we were mesmerized by this film, my brothers and I still trade the rare memorabilia available on Ebay. My brothers and I actually saw the film in its last theatrical release in the early 80s as "Dr. Syn, The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh". It was just as great as seeing it on TV only better becuase it was on a huge screen in my old neighborhood. I would love to be able to share this fantastic Disney production with my son someday soon. As kids, we dressed up as the Scarecow and various other characters from the film. I have actually written Disney several times to request that it be release on DVD. I cant wait until they do, Walt would insist upon it:)
56 The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh
Growing up in the 60's Walt Disney was a staple, and the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh my all time favorite. I even bought the 45 record and about drove my parents nuts by playing it so much. This film displayed Disney talent at its best working on many levels from historical to pure entertainment. Luckily I taped the show several years ago, but have about worn the tape out. I would give almost anything to have this 3 part series on DVD.
57 Please Release Me!
Way back in 1963, I was the only person in my high school who missed the Beatles' first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Why? Because an episode of the Disney series Dr. Syn--The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh--was running on another channel opposite it! I've been a fan of Patrick McGoohan for a lot of years (even before Scarecrow), and this is one of my favories. Disney did a wonderful job with their "tinned" set of Davy Crockett. I'm hoping they'll do the same for Dr. Syn--release all three episodes in the original version (but clean up the picture first!). If and when they do, I'll be one of the first in line to buy a copy or two!
58 A Classic That SCREAMS To Be Released On DVD!!!
This is a fine example of the work Disney used to turn out; rich, character-laden features, often with dark undertones. You're not bloody likely to find ol' Uncle Walt's legacy turning out anything of this calibre these days.
Partick McGoohan ("Secret Agent", "The Prisoner", "The Phantom") turns in his usual sterling performance as both the prim, stoic, mild-mannered church vicar by day, "Dr. Syn", & the oftimes blood-thirsty, out-for-justice avenger-by-night, "The Scarecrow". The supporting cast are equally good in this period piece, & it makes one yearn for movies to be made like they were in the "good old days".
I've heard it (on fairly good authority) that Disney plans to release this title on DVD later this year. If that's the truth, I can permanently replace the three copies I've worn out over the past 20 years!!
59 Disney's Version of "Scarecrow" is Excellent!
From watching this film years ago, I would highly recommend
this movie, starring Patrick McGoohan (aka - "Secret Agent Man"), who is simply "fantastic" in his role as the respect-
ful Vicar, (alias the "Scarecrow"). Its films like this, that
always kept Disney "on top" and I'm sure most people would like
to see more of films like this one on television, instead of the
usual programs that we see. I definitely would highly recommend
purchasing this movie for any video collection!
60 I want my DVD
Having originally seen this film in the cinema in 1963 and having since owned at least two copies on VHS tape, long since worn out, I now want it on DVD.
Patrick McGoohan (Danger Man, The Prisoner) makes a great Doctor Syn and George Cole (St. Trinians, Minder) a suitably roguish sexton.
The story is presented at a good pace and the atmosphere is nicely creepy in the right places. The scarecrow's cackling laugh chills those who cross him.
To date, Danger Man, The Prisoner and Minder have all been released on DVD. How about Dr. Syn and St. Trinians?
61 DR. SYN, ALIAS THE SCARECROW
Truly outstanding Walt Disney production. Entertaining, exciting, excellent acting, and beautiful haunting, scenery. Also, the musical score is very appealing. Walt Disney at his best! Would recommend for anyone.
