1 No more Epson printers for me!
As others have pointed out: Good News is that it prints handsomely when it works. All the rest is bad news. Incredibly poor user interface with tiny text on a dim LCD screen and buttons with labels like "1" and "2". Wouldn't matter except you'll spend more time working on the dang thing than printing with it. Inkjets clogged every other day, then finally one clogged up permanently. I wasn't at all sad because it was such an unpleasant printer to work with. Paper jams, paper tray falling off, slow boot-up, consumed ink like a drunken sailor. And What Ink! $50 a pop. Lasted about a year. I never even tried the roll paper option, but you could tell that would be a bear to get working right.
My previous Epson printer had been OK, but I threw this one into the garbage bin with a particular glee. A very frustrating machine. I'm trying a Canon next time. With NO LCD DISPLAY.
2 The Best I've Ever Owned!
This Epson 925 printer is the best I've ever owned. I've owned HP, Lexmark, and Compaq. This one is just the best. Easy, reliable, can use multiple types of digital camera cards, cheap ink refills and cartridges last a long time. I like it so much, that I bought a second one for my son. Highly recommend!!! Works great with XP Professional!
3 Guzzles ink, constant clogging, expensive ink
The heads need constant cleaning, and cleaning uses up a lot of ink. Cleaning often clogs the heads even worse. The cartridges are small and expensive. They have a chip that disables them after a certain amount of use, whether they are really used up or not. You'll spend more time and ink cleaning heads than printing. Print quality is okay if you can get the heads clean, and if you have any ink left by then. Built-in media card reader is nice.
4 Avoid this like the plague
Photo quality was very good to excellent. Overall, however, this printer was an incredible disappointment. When my Epson 750 started to go downhill after a few years I bought this for my department, thinking it would be a good replacement. Well it's good when it prints which is about 30% of the time. 70% of the time, for no reason whatsoever, it would print 10-70% of the document and then simply stop -- as if ordered to do so by some higher power. I have no idea why. Nothing in the manual explained this. I reinstalled the driver and other software dozens of times. Our computer techs at work could not figure it out. Advice from the Epson support staff suggested installing the ink monitor software which we did -- none of this worked. Sometimes, after reinstalling the driver the printer would print 10 pages (of mostly image layout drafts) successfully then start to do its usual stopping in the middle of a document. What's the point of owning something that does this?
5 Very, very sad chunk of plastic.
I agree with most of the negatives I've read here. I've not had as much paper trouble as others, but enough to make me really hate the thing. The little screen is impossible to see; the controls are arcane, quirky, badly marked, and designed by Martians for Martians. I've owned quite a few Epson printers, and even 2 Epson desktops which I bought because of the name. This printer has made the name mean nothing. I only paid $100, and that was too much. Two charges of ink cost that much!
6 Great quality printer!
I purchased this printer a few months back, it is a good printer.
First I would like to say that I've read other reviews on this printer stating different types of problems people where having with it. In the time I've used it, I have not experienced any problems with it. Print quality is excellent. In fact when I ask people to try and tell the difference between the printed copy and the copy from the film developers they end up picking the copy I printed, thinking it came from the developer. In fact my printed copy comes out more crisp and clear. It is a bit slow printing, but I think that's why the picture comes out so great. Besides I won it on Ebay, BRAND NEW for $56.00. You sure can't complain about that! Good Luck!
7 Great print quality...but too many other aggravations
First the good news...this printer makes great quailty photo and document prints for the money. For me, that ends the good.
Aside from that, it has many other issues that drive me nuts. First, it takes what seems like an eternity to print the first page. Goes through a bunch of gyrations until it decides its ready to print. Its also very loud, and I think uses a lot of ink (maybe thats why the prints look so good). Finally, the thing jams pretty regularly. Its not a printer you can load a bunch of paper in, print a large document and walk away assured that when you return it will be done. More than likely, it will have jammed.
Bottom line...if you don't print too much and want quality prints, this one may be for you. If you are looking for an everyday printer...forget it.
8 Worst Epson I've ever owned
This printer would be a poor value if it was free. The print quality is good and it does not seem to fade like HP ink. The problems are a poor paper feed that routinely picks up 3 or 4 sheets, an ink system that clogs continuously (requiring head cleaning many times a day), a tendency to smear ink on the pages, and very high ink consumption.
9 Great printer, but childish problems
Great quality, easy to use, great drivers, nice features, no payper jamming (had to study to work with rolls). only one problem, Cleaning heads on generic printing heads may be weekly, but heads so cheap, I wouldn't call it problem, just order pack of heads 3 times cheaper then others
10 AWFUL, AWFUL, HORRIBLE WASTE OF $
This is my third Epson printer... and my final.
I bought it for the borderless technology, and the card reader ability, and the memory capability.
-Prints BEAUTIFUL photos!
***only with factory ink & epson premium glossy paper.
That's the only quality.....and with that comes the ink driking ability of this thing. Man- I've NEVER seen ink drain so fast!
I've got friends with HP, and the photo's come out just as nice, and the ink last for ever!
Not to mention HP's rarely seem to jam- I now have to manualy feed each envelope in the tray one by one, by hand!
If all you want is a photo printer- buy this....
If you want a work horse, that can do it all, buy an HP... it's that simple.
BTW....if you have an Secured Digital card for your camera (SD) this card reader thats built in, takes EVERYTHING BUT THAT and the usb port will not recognize anything when you plug in the card reader, or any usb device. I've tried it. Had to buy an SD card reader separately, cause that's what type of card my kodak digital takes.
BAD EPSON....BAD EPSON....NEVER AGAIN EPSON!!!!!!!
11 Great gift for the computer phobic
I bought this printer for a freind who has no desire to own a computer. Yup, they're still out there. He loves my old digital camera I gave him. But he was frustrated taking the smart card to the drugstore for printing. He can now print his own pictures at home! The photo quality is fantastic. Really a great stand alone printer.
12 How could Epson make such an awful product?
I'm an Epson afficionado, but after having this printer I will not be buying another Epson. It has been a constant headache, frequent paper jams, firmware glitches, inkjets clogging over and over (I lose a lot of ink by having to clean jets at least 2-3 times in succession to get ink flowing again).
Stay away from it. Go with a Canon or HP. Those seem to get the best reviews.
It's a shame... the output really is beautiful, but it's not worth tearing your hair out.
13 A Dud
I have purchased Epson printers for years, and normally I am fairly satisfied. This design however was obviously not tested. As others have said, the paper very easily jams, the nozzles clog frequently and easily, and the printer drinks quite a bit of ink. I currently also use an Epson 2200, which has ended up costing less because it does better with the ink (ink is where these companies make their money of course).
14 What a piece of junk
I paid $250 for this piece of junk no more than 9 months ago and now I've seen it for almost $100. Kind of tells you something about this printer. I always use HP printers but my wife said that her company recommended the Epson 925. If I don't print for a few days, the nozzles get clogged and you have to waste paper cleaning the head and unclogging the nozzles. As I run Windows XP Pro and the printer is on a USB 2.0 and have the latest Epson 925 drivers, I seem to only get two pictures printed and the printer times out. Another waste of paper. If this the best Epson can do, you'd be foolish to buy an Epson photo printer. I'm dumping this printer and going back to reliable HP.
15 Bad choice!!! Do not like this printer.
When I went to go looking for printers, a Epson representative was there at Best Buy and told me about all of the great features of this printer, and how the ink economy was better than most.
As my wife uses this printer a lot it seems to have a lot of issues that are not easy resolved.
The printer jams paper a lot and has a hard time loading paper. The 4X6 roll that you can use is practically useless since the paper is all curled after it's printed. Also the printer takes more than one sheet quite frequently. We noticed that it will not print on HP Photo Paper which we were used to and have found to be one of the better papers to print photos on.
Another thing we find irritating is it always clogs and we are always having to waste ink by doing the self clean utility. Very bad design. Not only do we waste a lot of ink unclogging it but it doesn't print very many pictures per ink cartridge. I remember having our old HP printer last for about 2 months on one cartridge. We seem to buy a new cartridge every 2 weeks.
I would not recommend this printer. HP seems to be better. Or maybe Canon but we haven't tried a Canon yet.
16 Good Printer!
I was unsure of my decision to buy this printer from a lot of the other reviews I had read (they wern't so good) and I had had a lot of issues with my old 785EPX, but still like Epson's quality above all others. I have used Epson printers for the last 5 years, starting with the 875DCS. The 785EPX worked great for the first year and then went crazy, mostly about the ink cartridges, I would have to clean the heads 5 times before I would get a clear good print. The reason I choose the 925 over the 825 was the new ink cartridges. I decided to give it a try and went ahead and bought it (mostly becuase I needed a new printer and had some mail in rebates for it).
I have had the printer for about 2 months now and have not had any problems at all! No issues with paper feeding or ink (in the 785EPX I was having streaking issues), I leave my printer on all day everyday and when I havn't used it in awhile it takes a minute for it to warm up, but otherwise this printer had resorted my faith in Epson! I highly suggest it over the 825 (becuase of the cartridges).
17 Stay Away from Epson Printers
Cons: Poor paper handling with frequent jams. Ruins many photos with roller marks or wrinkles.
VERY FREQUENT nozzle clogs. I am wasting 3/4 of every ink cartridge by having to go through several cleaning cycles daily.
Nonexistent tech support, emails to tech support simply results in an automated reply that puppets back the same useless information on their website.
Epson printers are simply not worth the hassle and expense for the one in ten photo that prints correctly.
18 A great Photo Printer
I have always owned HP printers but never satisfied with the quality. I am so impressed with this Epson printer. I have made beautiful copies of pictures and found it difficult to tell which was the copy. The only thing I recommend is that if you are printing pictures then use Colorlife paper.
19 Poorly Manufactured, Over-priced Printer
When I went to go looking for printers, a Epson representative was there, and told me about all of the wonderful features of this printer, and how the ink economy was rather good.
This is pretty far from the truth. This printer has many problems. First of all, it has a bad paper loading design, so often when it is printing; it will grab 2 or 3 sheets at a time. This is the least of its problems.
This 'photo quality' printer may have good resolution and all, but it smears ink quite often and good resolution or not, a smear in the ink just ruins a picture.
The major problem with this printer however, is that the print heads get clogged VERY OFTEN. Just about every other time you print, you have to have the printer clean it's print heads, which is time consuming, and wastes ink. I have gone through one and a half cartridges of color ink, and one of black, and have only printed around 5 or 6 color images. A few weeks ago, I was trying to have it print a simple text document, and it took about 20 minutes because I had to clean the print heads 3 times in order to get a print without streaks and lines.
In conclusion, this printer is poorly designed, it goes through ink at a ridiculous rate, and is very very unreliable. Do yourself a big favor and DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER.
20 Bad drivers and operating program
This is a replacement for an older Epson Printer. It has good prints. I have windows xp. I have nothing but program trouble with this unit. Contacted Epson, no reply on how to fix the problem. After printing a photo, I have to shut down my computer and restart it so I can print on this printer of my HP lazor Jet printer again. I also have a HP Lazer Jet B&W printer. After every use of the Epson my lazer jet prints a page with a small smiley face in the upper left hand corner with an arrow next to it. Tried new driver downloads, Still has same problem. I think this might be a good printer, if I could get the unit to work properly. Tried a Epson 960, same problem. I would never buy another Epson, because of the bad programs.
21 Do not use with Linsys pps1uw print server
I wished to use this with the Linksys pps1uw usb print server. Could not get it to work. Received a message during install of the printserver stating not to use the epson spool manager. I was using windows 2000 and there is no epson spool manager program for 2000. Still waiting on both Epson and Linksys to return my email as both of there phone queuqes are a wast of time. If I can make it work I will repost so that others do not feel my pain.
22 Epson 925
I purchased this printer to replace a 3 year old Epson 900. After 3 years that printer had become ink-logged. It smeared ink over everything we tried to print.
The Epson 925 is doing the same thing after one month of use. We went through a color ink cartrige within the first month even though we were not printing color. The simple act of cleaning emptied the cartridge, which needs to be done often in order to print at all.
I actually purchased the printer from Best Buy. I asked for my money back. Too bad, it actually worked for more than 14 days. Please contact Epson. Epson says please contact your reseller.
Do not buy this printer or any other Epson for that matter unless you are just looking for a paper holder. If you actually need to print more than once a month, buy something else.
23 Great photos, horrible personality
I agree with the other reviews here in that this printer produces amazing photos. But if you're planning on using this in your home office, read on...
When used as a day-to-day printer for documents this is the worst printer I've ever had. Paper jams occur EVERY SINGLE TIME I print multiple page documents. The paper feed mechanism is the worst I've encountered, scarring some pages with it's grippers. I've tried all kinds of papers, various numbers of pages in the feeder, all to no avail.
Ink is another problem. The heads clog once a day, producing a page with about 20% ink coverage. I've tried name brand and generic ink cartidges, and it doesn't seem to matter. To fix it, I have to perform a head cleaning about 3-4 times in a row to get back to decent ink coverage.
So DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER if you are looking for a workhorse. It's the most-unreliable printer (I can't leave the room while I print because I know I'll have to clear a jam) I've had the misfortune of owning.
24 Phenominal cost/performance Printer
I would feel better about my opinion if I could compare a full size pic from this printer to the much more expensive 960. With that said, I love this printer. Really, this is a machine with split personalities (as are many of the photo printers out there today).
First, it is a printer attached to and used by your computer. There are a huge number of options once you hit the print button. So many, in fact, that it is easy to mess up the quality and/or colors in your print. But if you are patient, the results from this printer are amazing. Using premium glossy photo paper, I am amazed at how much the vibrant images seem to leap from the print. Really a stark contrast to the dull flat images of yesterday's inkjets. Print speed is okay, nothing wonderful. And, of course, don't use this printer to do regular docs. The quality is fine, but you're better off with one of the cheap (but fast and high quality) lasers out there, many about 100 clams.
Second, this is an independent digital camera printer. It has built in slots for compactflash, memory stick, and mmc. This is a great contrast to those printers with just a pc card reader (then yoiu have to purchase the appriate adaptor for you camera). I might add that the printer serves as an all purpose memory card reader exceptionally well. Any card you put in appears as a removebale drive on your XP computer.
I must say, the use of this printer independently is very limited right out of the box. That is becasue it lacks a preview monitor. Forget about being able to print the right picture from many on a memory card - impossible unless you waste time and ink and paper on an index page. Also, the fancy features for cropping, resizing, rotating, etc are worthless absent the monitor. Since the monitor must be purchased separately at a third of the cost of the printer itself (for a tiny, tiny monitor), this is problematic. While HP photo printers are more expensive, they generally have built-in monitors, making the price more even w/ this one. But, the good news is that I just ordered a monitor for an older epson photo printer of ... very, very cheap. I called Epson, which told me that the monitor will work fine, it is just white instead of black.
Finally, I want to address the paper roller. Included is a roll of premium photo paper on a 4" wide roll. This is a GREAT idea. Since this printer can print all the way to the edges, you can produce high volume 4X6 prints easily. The printer will print them onto the roll paper and automatically cut them as it prints!! The result are prints that make my account with on-line digital photo processors obsolete. The only complaint is that the prints curl pretty substantially since they are on a roll.
In sum, a great printer. Sturdier construction than Epson has produced in the past, exceptional quality prints. The status screen is hard to read if the printer is on a tall surface. The paper is actually kind of difficult to load correctly. The lack of a preview monitor (and its supplemental expense) makes many of the features unusable. But these are really just technical points. At the price this printer is going for, it is a must have for amateur photographers.
25 Beautiful pictures, great customer service
I just bought this two days ago. I was switching from a Canon S800. I was extremely impressed with the pictures that were coming out. Much better than on my old Canon. Setup was a cinch. The best part is the true borderless prints. The 4x6's I printed look like they came from a photo developer. In fact, they're probably better looking than any one-hour photo I've used. And the pictures look great on matte or glossy. The epson paper is also cheaper than the Canon paper. I only wish Epson made precut 5x7 paper!
I haven't determined if it really is an ink hog, but for the quality, it's worth it. And I don't think the tanks are that expensive. A full set of the Canon's used to run me ~[$$], but these are under [$$] (color, don't really need black all that much). The printer is really really slow, though. Probably the biggest drawback for me.
I haven't played with the features on the display. I've been printing from the computer.
The best part has been that I had a paper jam that I caused, and couldn't fix. I called tech support, and they agreed to send me a new printer right away. I will send mine back after I get the new one, which should be 2-3 days. No hassling, or anything.
I've been converted to an Epson user.
26 Fabulous Printer
This works like a dream. Installation and setup on XP Home version on my Dell Inspiron couldn't have been easier.
The photos are truly awesome. Incredible clarity.
Since I print mostly from the computer I don't really need the extra ability to do it stand alone, but I guess it's nice to have.
27 great prints...
i actually bought it based on comparisons i made at a local retailer. on the plus side, colors were richer and more realistic looking. the down side is that is does seem to be a bit of an ink hog, but i've come to accept that if you're looking for a quality print, you're going to burn through some ink. even then, it ain't THAT bad...
overall, i'm quite pleased with it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a great all-around printer.
28 Great Printer / Reasonable Price
I received this printer only for a week. The printer setup was very easy, I like the Epson quick start guide, it was easy to understand and it only took me 10 minutes to setup. I can start print photos right away by insert the CF card without PC, it was so convenience to print snap shots at home without waiting for hours or days. I was very impressed by the colors and details that I got from the pictures. It look like the prints you order from the local photo labs. Before you decide to print a picture, print an index sheet first to avoid any mistake, also the LCD on the printer is so easy to make any changes. For best result, I am getting a usb cable to connect to pc, so I can do some photo enhancement to make my pictures look better, to get perfect prints.
For the price of this good quality printer, you won't go wrong!
29 VERY DISAPPOINTING
I was sold on Epson after using a Stylus 777 printer that I received with the purchase of a Dell Computer 2 years ago. I have an Olympus digital camera that I have printed several pictures from in that time frame. I decided to purchase the 925 because of the many options with it. I set the printer up last night and printed a few pictures and am very disappointed. It had already used a considerable amount of ink. The pictures were not clear, there are lines, and the colors are terrible. They are no where near the quality of the 777 (and it's quality has decreased after 2 years of printing). I am not sure what printer to purchase now. Needless to say I am returning the printer. I might add that I AM very pleased with Amazon, the delivery time was less than a week, and they make it very easy to return.
30 Great Printer!
Can't go wrong with this printer.
I had been doing some research on printers compareing Epson and HP and found this to be a good choice.
Pros:
- First of all, it has a great price. I got this for 250 dollars with a 50 dollar rebate. That price alone beats any HP Printer.
- Quality is excellent! It looks just like it came out of a photo lab if you are printing a high res file on photo paper.
- Automatic roll with cutter is a very neat device. The printer comes with a roll of glossy paper, and what this does is it prints on a 4 inch with roll and automatically cuts it to make it 6 inches. So it makes PERFECT 4x6 prints!!! (When you select "borderless" of course.
- Easy to use. This thing is very easy to use making it simple for a novice to work it. You can print without a computer also because it has an LSD screen and takes all kinds of memory cards. There are so many options on this thing it's awesome.
Cons:
- It doesn't come with a USB cable, so if you purchase this printer make sure to pick up a USB cable as well or else you won't be able to print things from your computer and only from memory cards, zip drives, ect. (Although, i think most PHOTO printers don't come with USB cables these days)
- Can't really think of anything else because i love this printer so much.
Review:
*****
Keep in mind that i haven't used another Photo printer, so i'm kind of biased towards this printer. However, i would recommend this product to anyone that's even just the slightest interested in printing out photos. If you're an amateur and are looking for a printer that prints good quality photos and is affordable, then look no further because this one's for you.
*note* I looked at the HP equivalent printer and printed out sample copies, and it seemed that both printers printed at the same quality; however, this printer is about 100 bucks cheaper!
31 Great Printer
This printer is great for printing pictures and you can even print them without owning a computer, as long as you have the memory or flash card. It is also capable of printing the long roll of 4 x 6 borderless photos and has a self-cut device that cuts out the roll for you.
When printing the glossy quality photos, it consumes lots of ink, so you might want to keep some back up cartridges, since they will drain out pretty quickly. Look for those generic ink cartridges for this model. They work well and save you money.
If you're looking for a printer that prints great quality picture and capable of doing the regular printing, this printer is for you. But if you're looking to print a regular color picture or just for printing documents, I suggest a cheaper printer.
32 Buy the "Epson 925 Lottery" Printer and see if you win!
When it works the pictures, transfers and post cards we've produced look great!
The problem is: you just don't know when it's NOT going to look great. You *must* baby-sit the printer, and about half way through each print (when you can actually see a portion of the image) decide if the printer is function correctly.
To get two transfers (at a each, just for the paper) we've had to print four times... wasting paper. 1st try: good. 2nd: oops - clean the heads (uses ink). 3rd: oops, clean the head. 4th: great! Tah-dah!
Post cards: same thing. Several great Xmas cards in a row, then wham! Bad one. Clean the heads. Several good, and another bad.
If you like babysitting, don't mind wasting money every now and then, enjoy listening to the printer cleaning the heads and printing test sheets, this printer is for you!
Love the instructions that come with Epson's transfer paper, too. "Place the printable side up," it says. Uh, could you be a little less specific? There's two sides, and this is my first time using the paper. Is that the smooth side, or the rough side?
"Choose 'Flip Image' in the driver." Uh, AIN'T no flippin' "Flip Image" option anywhere I can find!
On the plus-side: the printer has a small footprint so it doesn't take a lot of room on your desk. Ink cartridges are easy to replace.
On the negative side: any paper thicker than your normal printer paper requires you be present to hand-feed each sheet. Post cards, business cards, etc will feed multiple sheets and jam the printer. Another "Engineering" marvel.
Yeah, but when it works... nice pictures are assured! When I win the lottery, I'll try a different brand, and let you know how they compare.
