1 Zero stars, more trouble than it's worth
The LCD screen just went blank after 4 months of use, making the functions besides basic printing partly inacessible. Epson promised a replacement in 3-5 business days. I am informed by the previous reviews that it will be refurbished, not new. I wasn't told that by anyone at Epson. We'll see how the replacement works. That said, even when it was working, it's not a good choice for general use. When you print, it freezes your program while it slowly sends the information to the printer, and it prints slowly. The draft setting produces a useless shadow, you can't even use it for text, it's too light to read. The ink cartridges are expensive, and have to be changed frequently, every month for the black, in our small office. Get a HP for general use, and use Epson for printing photos you want to keep. Don't bother with the other functions.

At this point, the replacement printer has arrived, was a pain in the neck to set up, and immediately, the day it arrived, was in need of servicing, "some parts at the end of their useful lives" as the message reads. So not only did they send a refurbished printer, but an old one as well. If I had not already bought over a hundred dollars in ink cartridges, I would send this printer back. More trouble than it's worth. Zero stars.

Epson technical assistance explained that they "probably" replaced all the used parts already, and just didn't reset the mother board, helped me disable the error message and, without admitting in so many words that in fact they might not have replaced all the used parts, pointed out that we are still under warranty until December. How reassuring. After another 1 1/4 hours on the phone. Is this how you want to spend your workday?
2 Epson Stylus Photo RX500 Inkjet All-in-One
I ordered the Epson Stylus Photo "RX500" Inkjet All-in-One (last year's model) from Amazon. I got a free shipping, and the RX500 prints pictures and text very well. It also does a great job in re-creating pictures from negatives. However, Epson offered three great Rebates, so I sent them to Epson immediately, but Epson CLAIMS THEY NEVER RECEIVED THEM, and Espon discounted the phone number to ask them about the missing Rebates. I e-mailed Epson, but I got NO Reponse. Buy a Epson if you want a good printer, but DON'T expect the rebates if Epson is the one offering them.

3 WAS Great...but LCD screen went blank after only 3 months
All the good things folks have said here are true...but so is the fact the the LCD screen is flaky. I purchased my RX600 in December '04 from Amazon. Was pleased with print quality, scanning abilities, and all around package. However, in March '05, a scant three months after purchase, the LCD screeen went blank.

After doing a Web search, I've found that a number of folks have had this problem. There does not appear to be a fix, except to send the entire printer back to Epson, so that it can be replaced by a refurbished unit. A disappointing end to a great start.
4 Not a True All-in-One
With 6-color Photo Inks and up to 5,760 x 1,440 optimized dpi, Epson was well on their way to surpassing HP's dominance in the marketplace. But then they stopped short of a true all-in-one and omitted stand alone fax capabilities. Without this feature how is this any better than just having a printer and a scanner that focus and excel at their given functions? Faxing is such an integral part of a home office that anything less falls short and forces our hand to buy another HP.
5 BROKEN.
I've had mine for 2 months.. at the most. It's totally dead, won't turn on, nothing. I've tried all sorts of things to bring it back to life, no luck. Don't buy this printer.

I've had a little HP Deskjet for 10 years, works perfectly, never had a problem with it. I guess I'll be going back to HP.

Peice of junk. I would beat this printer with a hammer if I didn't have the warranty. I'm so mad at this printer!!! BROKEN!!! ALL THAT MONEY AND IT'S BROKEN!!!! AHHH!!! I FEEL USED!!!
6 Excellent Unit Minor Paper Compatibility
I had always used HP (with it all my HP paper) and then after the complete disaster with my Photosmart 7660 I decided to try Epson. After looking thru several Epson printers that worked with MAC Os I found this great all in one, but then when it got home i tried printing on my infinite supply of HP Double Sided Brochure Paper but it didn't work with any of the pre-sets in the printing window. So now I have almost 50 sheets of this paper that i cannot use. Besides that is an excellent printer with excellent printing quality
7 Pleasantly surprised - I LOVE IT!
--I've spent a week or so reading and rereading online reviews and product descriptions, and going around to stores to see printers and ask questions. It didn't matter what product it was - someone online hated it and others online loved it. I finally decided to just bite the bullet, buy it, and see for myself. I LOVE THIS PRINTER!
-- Setup was fast and pleasant - and when I had a question, I had the tech help on the line within a minute or less. Printed out a picture on plain ol' everyday paper (HP/92 brightness), expecting to just toss it out as a test. But it was beautiful enough to keep - couldn't believe it. It was fast and easy too. I can only imagine how nice pictures will be on photo paper - and I'll be able to easily take old family negatives or old snapshots and make fresh looking photos - it has a simple auto restore funtion.
--Then I tried a black and white text page, expecting that I'd see the poor quality someone in a review had mentioned. Wrong! It turned out beautiful! "But," I thought, "Aha! That was just tiny print in a cursive font - I'll try size 12 text in an everyday Arial font, and then I'll see this poor quality those reviews mentioned." And guess what? It turned out just as beautiful. Maybe I happen to have exactly the right computer and operating system to be compatible with it, I don't know...
--I find this printer fast, clean, and even FUN! If you want to do production printing of some kind, this might not be the printer for you - but for a home user, I can't imagine what more I could want.
--By the way, I'm using a Mac G3 notebook computer, and I got a Bluetooth adaptor for about $40 to have the option of using this as a *wireless* printer. If someone in my family who doesn't have Bluetooth in his computer wants to use it wireless, all he has to do is buy another $40 Bluetooth adaptor to add to his computer.
--PLUS, although it has no fax, an Epson rep told me I can fax with it in connection with my computer's software - and for someone who only faxes occasionally, that's just fine.
8 Fantastic printer/scanner, twitchy Mac software
I bought this when I had a PCI Graphics G4 Macintosh (Yikes!), and the software was a stone B!tch to get installed. The installer kept crashing under OS 10.3. I eventually was able to figure out which software application was crashing, and was able to manually install it off the CD. After that, everything worked fine. The software still will not support faxing from within OS 10.x, you have to save the file, and then open up Preview to send the fax.

Overall, this is a great all-in-one. The scans are excellent, the scan speed is quick, and the software is good, although the default to Auto mode is really irritating until you manage to switch it off.

The print quality is what I come to expect from Epson. This printer cleans itself less frequently than my old Stylus Photo 780, and is quieter, more stable, better in general.

I haven't played around with digital photo capacity/slide scanning, being new to the digital photo field. Overall I am satisfied with the purchase, though I wish their software was better.
9 Piece of Junk
This printer is full of features; only problem - mechanical disaster. While it does a decent job with photos, it hates plain paper printing. I've never had a home printer jam so often or so badly. Additionally, the software interface is the most chaotic I've ever used. You go thru three or four screens to get something to print( if it doesn't jam ). I could put up with the interface chaos, if only it didn't break down.
I'm now going on my third unit. The first two have been sent back under warranty for mechanical failure - blank LCD screen and a terminal paper jam !
Don't waste time, money or patience. Go buy another printer. This one's is a dud.
10 Save your money!
Without a doubt, the WORST printer I have ever owned. Within two months of purchase the screen went completely blank. This problem does not seem too uncommon; display models at Best Buy and Office Depot were similarly not working. This printer eats ink like there is no tomorrow. A full supply of six inks, retailing for about $88.00 (including tax), lasts, on average, about 10 weeks. Further more, despite being advertised as an "All-In-One," it does not include a fax machine.
11 Since when did faxing and photography go hand in hand? HA!
Faxes being of quaternary importance to Epson, this is --- beyond a shadow of a doubt --- the most photographic joy you can ever achieve for $300. What encompasses the term "all-in-one" is completely subjective. The folks that have decided to not even actually write about the sheer outstanding quality of this product, yet bash it for not having a stupid fax machine both don't understand good products on the market and are utterly ignorant. To be honest, I've had reviews deleted on Amazon for speaking the truth about certain products, and I'm highly offended that Amazon hasn't removed reviews such as the ones about the RX600 which don't mention anything objective at all about the machine. Stop ranting and open your eyes to the positive aspects of this machine, because the Canon MP780 and HP 2610 can't even match the superior structure and quality of this device. Stop worrying about defining "ALL" and hook this sucker up. Scan 35mm film and negatives; by the way all you FAX MANIACS out there, Epson brought an award-winning feature here to their "all-in-ones" ... and since no other brand's machines can scan and redevelop slides and film, I guess they wouldn't be "all-in-ones" either then, right? Hmmmm .... anyhow, unmatched 5760x1440 dpi printing, waterproof, smudge resistant ink (something Canon and HP will never offer the user), and the ability to restore your oldest of photographs within a few minutes are reasons enough to own this machine.

Understand everyone that Epson's concern is not office products. Go buy a Canon, HP, Lexmark, or Brother if you whole-heartedly need a fax. But don't get on Amazon and pollute the minds of those who need to look no further for the most robust, outstanding photo-producing "ALL-IN-ONE" on the planet.

P.S. And to the amazon public, Epson consumables are NOT more expensive than HP. At $87 for the entire six cartridges and $114 for the four HP's can use (including their grey carts) and given Epson and Canon machines cost 40% less to maintain than equivalent HP and Lexmark models, it should be obvious which machines to consider. Check out Tom's Hardware and look up the HP 8150, Epson R300 (uses same ink as RX600), and the Canon Pixma 5000 if you doubt any of this.
12 No Fax equals NOT all-in-one ..... heartily agree
I will have to agree with the misleading terminology of "all-in-one". The first "all-in-one's" were by HP and included the fax function; hence, the term all-in-one. To provide less is false and misleading.
I am currently looking for a replacement for my HP all-in-one as the interface software SUCKS. HP does NOT know how to write good printer drivers/interfaces ..... yet they are the leader (for the most part) of the printer business.
Epson is good, great ...... but this printer is VERY misleading, as are any that use the all-in-one terminology without including a fax as part of it ........ I know, I was being mis-lead and will now have to re-think my selection of printers.
By the way ....... WHO on earth would every have a separate fax machine in addition to these "all-in-one's"??? Does everyone have an abundance of space?
13 Printing Envelopes
This printer is TERRIBLE if you want to use it to create nicely printed return addresses on envelopes. After several converstations with customer service (at my expense), as well as a new piece of equipment sent to me, they could still not get the printer to print without spraying ink all over the folds of the envelopes.
14 Excellent at everything it claims it can do; doesn't fax.
The RX600 has a small color display that makes it easier to print directly from a camera memory card, and you can see more options at once for copying and other things than on the tiny b/w LCD display of the RX500.
Ê
The two things that tilted me in favor of the Epson were the ability to scan from slides and negatives, and having six separate ink wells so you don't waste ink/money replacing 3-color cartridges when only one color is empty; in addition, you don't have to switch cartridges to print photos, as on the HP PSC 2410, the other printer I was considering, where you obviously have to switch back afterward, which didn't appeal to me. It's not that big of a deal to switch ink cartridges as much as the mess would be if the kids weren't careful--sometimes the cartridges get ink buildup on the bottom. Still, I would definitely recommend considering the HP PSC 2410, since your needs/tolerances may differ.
Ê
The HP 2410 has the small color screen included for a lower cost than the Epson. It also faxes. Somehow I had assumed they both could fax, but the Epson can't, which is annoying.
15 Jin- unfairly downrating a product without having used it
Before the incorporation of the "fax" feature, any machine that did printing, scanning, and copying was referred to as an "All-In-One". This is still the case today, as there are machines that don't have the fax feature, and there always will be such machines.

Jin is obviously reviewing 2 products he/she does not own simply based upon what was read about the product's features and is not reliable, but it still impacts the overall rating of the product. As of today, the Canon PIXMA MP780 has not yet hit the market, so how is that Jin can compare it to the Epson? Again, based solely upon what he/she read, not based on personal experience.

Some people and small businesses prefer a separate fax machine, and people have no right to downrate a product based on their own youth or ignorance.

This product does exactly what it is supposed to do, and does it very well.

Jin, please stick to reviewing products you own and have hands-on experience using.

Amazon members, please confine your comments to personal experience. This person's 1-star rating has lowered the entire products credibility unfairly.

Jin's review should be deleted.

16 No fax and "All-In-One" ?
I just wonder how they can call it "ALL-in-one" when it does NOT have FAX ? It's space age when private space travel is now possible, but for some reason, this old fashioned FAX is still the major document communication method for business and personal use. I'm very disappointed that Epson's All-in-one doesn't have FAX. Canon PIXMA MP780 All-In-One Photo Printer is the true ALL-in-One, and it is also photo quality printer/copier. And cheaper.

17 Can't Be Beat!!
I bought this Epson a few months ago. I own the Epson 785EPX and get great quality prints from it, but was thrilled at the idea of scanning old pictures, negatives and slides. I have played around with all of the above features and am very excited about the quality I am getting. The only thing is the restore photo feature is not perfect, but I am going to be adding Photoshop and see what I can do with that. The scan quality is excellent with no grainy look. I am amazed at how quiet the unit is as well. This was not a feature I cared about, but was pleasantly surprised by the difference. I even have to go up to the printer at times to see/feel if it is printing. I highly recommend this product. Enjoy!
18 Was only in market for new scanner, but...
As a graphic designer, I'm ALWAYS skeptical of anything that claims to be able to do "everything"...

Initially, I was in the market for a new scanner - I thumbed through some recent issues of MacWorld to try and find something decent and reasonably priced. I then stumbled upon a review for the RX500, because I also wanted to replace my clunky HP Deskjet- which was no good at printing photos, and it couldn't even do text that well either! Why was I keeping this thing?!

I went to CompUSA with the RX500 in mind, and there happened to be an EPSON rep. there, coincidentally in the process of selling an RX600 to someone else. Well, this person was ranting and raving over how great this printer was, and my wife and I just happened to overhear it. You married guys know how important it is to have the wife's blessing, don't you? Well, a couple of photo demonstrations and some copy tests, and we were walking out the door with an RX600 of our own!

I only gave it four stars, because I'm just way too critical of any photos & color prints that don't turn out perfect. But that's my profession, not a reflection on the product. I should have my wife write the review, because she's absolutely *thrilled* with the prospects of scanning & printing old negatives & slides, and printing directly from the camera's memory stick- no need for the nitpicky husband and his crazy Photoshop...

19 Quality all in one device!
There are hundreds of products I could (or should) have reviewed. Some good, some bad. This is the first one I have ever felt strongly enough to comment on.

Being in the IT field I have always been skeptical of "all in one devices". However, after doing some research this is typical of those devices

Pros:
(1) It's photocopier - plain and simple. With or without the PC. Color, BW, enlarge, reduce, zoom - all the features of regular coper.
(2) Digital camera support - memory card or USB cable. Images can be viewed and printed directly - again, without a PC
(3) Ease of setup. Very easy to follow directions. Step by step. It works as advertised with no installation hassles (WinXP)
(4) Scanner & a printer. Attach to the PC via USB - scan to image, scan to application. Very easy to use, and again, it does everything it says it should do

Cons:
Honestly I can't offer any. Maybe the price, but even then you're getting a set of multi-funcitonal devices all in one. How much would a printer, a scanner, and a color copier cost separately. How much space and cabling hassle would there be?

20 Very nice unit
This unit can do it all (except fax). The software is a dream compared to the HP2150 I returned in order to get this. I got the HP because it had built in wireless/ethernet print server and a fax. But the software bundle is all or nothing, they didn't separate out the printer driver...so anyone who wants to just print on the thing must first install 1.5gb (thats GIGabytes) of crap the infects your registry like a cancer. This Epson RX600's software is a dream. They separated everything! Just want to print occasional black and white like me, driver is just 8mb. Want everything and do photo touchups and crazy things and photo albums and scan (like my wife) - just put in the cd and add what you want one app at a time. That's why we went with this printer and returned the HP. Also, one more plus is that the RX600 scans old negatives and can print them perfectly or digitize them for you forever - the HP can't. I LOVE this feature (and yes, it's a combo of mechanical and software differences that achieve this, I dare you to try on another machine). I do miss the HP's built in print server. I bought a Linksys Wireless-G for USB2.0, and it won't work with this printer. Epson wrote me back and confirmed this. This is why I docked this review by a star. You MUST be able to run your printers from a print server. My 4 year old HPLaserJet3150 hooked up no problem, but my new Epson fails? That sucks, and if my wife didn't love this so much, I would send it back strictly for that reason. I do like how it's USB 2.0, it is fast. Separate color tanks (...)are sweet, not like HP where if blue runs out, you're forced to buy all other colors again. This has 6 color tanks all independently replaceable. Nice.
PROS: USB2.0, individual color tanks, scan negatives,LCD screen, front loading usb input for cameras, built in card reader on the front, great b/w quality, killer photo print quality, minimal/incremental/customizable software/driver install (extremely flexible and lightweight)
CONS: doesn't work w/ LinkSys print servers
21 Epson RX600 - A standalone photo lab in a box!
I have had my RX600 for a couple of weeks now, and think it is amazing. WITHOUT USING A COMPUTER, you can copy B&W or color documents that look fine and come out pretty soon after you push the button. However, when printing PHOTOS, this thing is LOTS better than Kodak's printing system in drug stores. It reads virtually any memory card. It reads cameras, CD's, and hard drives via USB on front. It scans color slides, negatives, B&W negatives and makes FANTASTICALLY RICH prints from them. With the tilting color LCD on the front you can crop and zoom photos before printing. It can scan or copy to CD's, memory cards, USB flash, etc, using its front USB port. Also has a Bluetooth adapter option that plugs in the same USB port.

Amazing feature: Print thumbnail preview sheets and blacken circles under pictures you want. Stick these sheets in the scanner and it prints out only your choices!

Naturally it's a great computer printer and scanner. You want to fax? Use it with your computer's modem.

22 A Wonderful Multifunctional Printer
This product is the greatest. It can print, scan, copy. And it looks great with my black desktop. I love the LCD screen.
