Disney's 1986 Flight of the Navigator combines a strong ensemble cast and classic '80s soundtrack with dazzling special effects for a high-flying sci-fi adventure. While searching for his little brother in the woods, 12-year-old David Freeman (Joey Cramer) falls down a ravine and is knocked unconscious. After what seems like minutes, he returns home, only to discover that eight years have passed since he was declared missing and presumed dead. Even more mystifying is that David hasn't aged, nor can he account for the time lapse. Meanwhile, NASA officials stumble upon a futuristic spacecraft and are determined to assess what David knows about it by locking him in a top-secret lab for scanning and testing. His only chance of escape is in the spacecraft manned by Max, a wisecracking robot. Cramer gives an earnest performance, which overcomes an imperfect script, while enough one-liners and imaginative animation will keep families engaged. Watch for Sarah Jessica Parker in one of her first film appearances. Rated PG for language. (Ages 6 and older) --Lynn Gibson

3 Excellent!!
One of the Best movies of my childhood. along with movies like (Goonies, NeverEnding Story, Labyrinth, Short-Circut, Invisible Kid, E.T.) and etc. This movie has amazing memorable moments that you will always remember. And no other movie has a genuine story like it. Let me say this, even if you are an Adult, This movie will still catch your interest. I watch it still and i am 21 now.
4 good for the whole family
A film by Randal Kleiser

"Flight of the Navigator" is a wonderful movie that is good for the entire family. It is the story of 12 year old David (Joey Cramer). David is sent by his parents to look for his younger brother who is late coming home. David searches in the woods, and after finding his brother, David falls off the edge of a small cliff into the valley below. When he comes to, shortly after, he returns home only to find that someone else is living there and has no idea who he is. David soon learns, from the police, that he was presumed dead 8 years prior. After being reunited with his family we see that while everyone else has aged during the missing time, David remains the same age he was when he fell. Meanwhile, NASA has located a spaceship which has crashed and they want to examine David to find out what he may know.

David manages to escape in the spaceship and with the help of the robot Max (Paul Reubens), evades being recaptured by NASA scientists. On the craft, David learns of what happened to him, why, and how he can rejoin his family. Along the way he meets Carolyn (a young Sarah Jessica Parker), an intern at NASA and various alien creatures that look like Muppets.

"Flight of the Navigator" is cute, funny, and an enjoyable movie. It is appropriate for children of all ages. Plus, it has muppet aliens. How can you beat that?

5 Wonderful film!
When I spotted this on the sales rack, my jaw dropped. Though in hindsight it may sound just plain silly, for some reason it just never occurred to me that this movie would ever be available for sale in any format. I absolutely loved this movie when I first saw it on television, and then never saw it again, but never forgot it. Some scenes from the movie were so memorable they have played in my mind many times in the years since. I loved the wisecracking and playful, endearing alien robot. For some reason the scene where they're travelling back through time, that particular scene's really stuck in my mind over the years. I immediately ordered it from Amazon.com, and am absolutely delighted to have it now in my collection. This is the kind of movie that can be watched again and again.
6 An underrated classic on DVD for the first time!

Young David Freeman ( played by Joey Cramer) was living in 1978 then suddenly when he gets a fall, he wakes up 10 years later still fresh and young to find out he's in 1986. He also discovers a knowledge of the farhest reaches of outer space, he is taken in by NASA to be studied for his strange powers. He finds an usual spacecraft from space in NASA then escapes into it to go anywhere he wants to and makes friends with a robot named " Max" and sees some strange space critters.

An underrated gem that is a well made if complicated sci-fi fantasy adventure movie that is bright, interesting, exciting, and has great qualities. Paul " Pee-Wee Herman" Reubens provides the voice of the sassy "Max", the special effects for it's day are quite good in comparison to today's CGI effects and contains an early appearence by Sarah Jessica Rabbit, it's a must See.

The DVD is clear as crystal with great sound but no extras at all, well that's alright cause this movie is finally on DVD.
7 Best Movie Ever Made
This movie was one of Disney's best movies they have ever made, why no sequal appears to have been made I can't understand why not, maybe if enough people buy the dvd someone will look into making a sequal and realise the potential in this forgotten classic. Sarah Jessica Parker has abig enough income, and im sure it was this movie that probably made her so popular, I think it's about time she gave something back to the community and made a sequal for this movie. I for one would definatley buy the sequal and any sequals made. I have heard from several people that they claim to have seen a sequal, but with years of searching I have not been able to confirm a sequal made, if anyone is aware of a sequal please email me on wfn@xtra.co.nz.
8 The best movie ever made to this day!
If you have not seen Disney's "Flight of the Navigator," then you have not seen a great Disney movie in your life. Others have come close, like Disney's "Angels in the Outfield" with Christopher Lloyd. However, when young David Freeman falls into a revine just to come back 8 Earth years later, this is where the whole movie begins.

I will admit that it does have a slow start, but after David climbs out of the revine, the movie just shoots like a spacecraft from there, literally. Hey, if you are looking for a famous celebrity in this movie, young Sarah Jessica Parker from "Sex in the City" is in this movie. Rent it, buy it, do whatever you have too. Just do what I have told countless others to do, see Disney's "Flight of the Navigator." It's the best comedy ever!
9 One Disney film NOT MILKED!!!
This is one of those rare Disney films that didn't get milked for all that it is worth. It kind of dissapeared and now it makes it reappearance on DVD, finally. I must say, this was probably my favorite film when I was a kid in the eighties, next to The Monster Squad (still waiting for that DVD release) and the Thundercats TV Show (this one NEEDS a DVD release). I haven't seen FLIGHT in a while but that it is available on DVD, I'll be sure to buy it. The more someone buys thae bare bones releases of these films, the more the studios realize there's market for them with deluxe DVD editions with tons of special features. Still looking forward to own this. Hey, whatever happened to Honey, I Shrunk The Kids? Just the first one, the sequels don't count...
10 See You Later, Navigator
While meeting his brother in the woods in 1978, David Freeman falls down a ravine. He gets up to discover that it's suddenly 1986. Where has he been for the last 8 years? Meanwhile, NASA has found a space ship. Is there a connection? Can they find a way into the ship? And who keeps calling David inside his mind?

I loved this movie as a kid. While the first part seems slow and rather obvious if you've heard of the premise, the second part is a fun ride. Once David meets up with Max, things pick up and the movie switch from mystery to comedy. Watching it today, I was impressed by the special effects. This movie is almost 20 years old and they still hold up very well.

This is basically a movie only DVD release. The film is presented in wide screen and surround sound. But for the price, you're getting a great deal.

While not great cinema, this is a movie that the entire family will have fun watching together. Get it today and enjoy.
11 One of my favorites as a kid
I waited a long time for this to come out on dvd. Bugs me that the companies don't get it right the first time though. They release the dvd with no extras what so ever just so they can release a special edition a few months later. Disney did the same thing with Tron. I'm sure they have a lot of stuff they could've put on this dvd but they chose otherwise. I would've liked to see some trailers at least and it doesn't even look like it has any.

Anyway Flight of the Navigator is a great movie for the whole family. It's under-rated and a lot of people might not even have heard of it. It's about a boy who's accidently sent to the future by an alien space ship. When he finds his family they wonder why he hasn't aged a day. Scientists then run tests on him to find out where he was. He decides to escape and find a way back to the past and getting a ride on the space ship is the only way back. Once he gets on the ship is when the movie turns more goofy as the alien is voiced by Paul Reubens (Pee Herman) after all. The movie is still tons of fun and it does have some clever science fiction in it too for a kids movie. So eventhough the dvd has no extras what so ever the movie itself is worth checking out.

12 best kid sci-fi movie ever
I saw this movie some 20 years ago when it was released to the movie theaters. The cast selection was good so was the script. I have bought this movie an am glad that no dialogue was edited out (unlike some other movies I've seen.) It would ruin the quality of the movie if the Disney censored some of the words from this film. I always like a good science fiction film, but don't be dubbing in or out any words. I love Joey Cramer's acting, he is a natural in this film. Joey Cramer was great in a 1987 movie called The Stone Fox with Buddy Ebsen, look for it when it comes out on DVD.
13 This is for my mom
My mom has enjoyed this movie for years, but we never owned it; however, I have decided to change that and order her her favorite movie of all time, "Flight of the Navigator." This is a great family movie that includes humor, science fiction, and a family that sticks together. I would recommend that every child watch this movie, even if it is before their time.
14 Compliance. A great movie!
This sci-fi film is a classic eighties movie filled with humour, drama and adventure from start to finish. This is a must see for all ages! The part where the Beach Boys 'I Get Around' is a funny moment.

I already have both the UK region 2 Version (widescreen 16.9) and the S. American region 1 Version (Full Screen 4.3) both officially released in these territories already. It's nice that US customers can now enjoy this terrific movie. Though the Region 1 version I have includes the Theatrical trailer as well as other extras. I hope there is a choice between full screen/widescreen options because this movie was filmed in full frame and cropped/matted for theaters/cinemas. So if you are used to the Vhs/tv broadcast versions this is the full screen original print. And will be losing picture from top and bottom for the widescreen release on DVD.

Let's hope this US version has loads of extras like audio commentary, featurette etc.

15 A must see for children from 5 to 90
When our family first saw this movie,it set up a lot off long didcussions at the dinner table, about what such an event would be like for our sons, and us,of course as parents we could see the down side to having our sons kidnapped and not brought back for eight years! You have to hand it to the younger generation they only saw the adventure and I have to admit their enthusiasum really over came our reservations! I'ts a great movie to be watched with the family(in case there are any questions)and then just turn them loose to watch it when they want, let them have there dreams that allow them to reach out much further in life and accomplish anything (if) they want it bad enough! I know I didn't give away the plot, but in this case I know first hand that telling the plot to a child will only ruin it for them! They will thank you more for the suprises! I can say this from years of raising our children and now I'm buying it for my Grandchildren. Thank you very much for rereleasing it! Thank you.
16 IT'S ABOUT ....... TIME!!!!
Okay, it's about time. this dvd has been so overdue. and i so hope it has at least the theatrical trailer, and widescreen format. yes it's a cheesy movie. and it has sarah jessica parker with purple hair returning from a twisted sister concert, but it's still good, i remember it vividly when i was very young. anyway, DISNEY, PLEASE DON'T PUSH BACK THE DATE ON THIS ONE. WE NEED IT, IT'S IN OUR BLOOD!!!
17 The best disney live action of the 80's!!!!
Just to let people know. This is coming to dvd on June 1st 2004. It's stated on comingsoon.net and also here. You have to type: Disney's Flight of the Navigator. Yeah, they are kinda of hiding from you all. So, go pre-order it will only be $13.99!!! A great price for a great dvd!!! This movie will be well worth buying on dvd, now let's all get Disney to release another great movie, Songs of the South!
18 Awesome
I'd have to say, this movie is by far one of the best 80's movies ever created, which goes right along with The Goonies as well. I recommend everyone to see this movie because it is done remarkably well and is such a terrific film.
19 Delivery from Phaelon!
This DVD has taken forever to finally get here! This film, along with "Return to Oz" (Faruzia Balk), "Cloak & Dagger" (Dabney Coleman, Henry Thomas) and "Condorman" (Michael Crawford..yes, THAT Michael Crawford) are my favorite 80's movies, and extremely high on my all-time film favorites list.
Plot summary: Kid from mid 80's falls into ravine, wakes up 13 years later to find his life and world changed. At the same time, NASA finds a downed almond-shaped, silver spaceship. We find out the kid and the ship are connected, NASA is P.O'ed, and the kid becomes The Navigator, the only source of info the ship has to reach it's home planet as well as re-deliver it's alien-fauna cargo. Awesome designs of the ship, great solid film! (Cute pufmarrin, odd Pee-Wee Herman choice for the 'bot...)
20 Forget it, it will never be on DVD
This is a great film....but it is just another swept under the carpet 80's movie.

Today's "MTV" generation only watches movies which contain one or more of the following elements: scantily dressed women driving fast cars, tattooed muscle guys jumping out of airplanes, or skin tight leather wearing kung-fu fighters.

The Flight of the Navigator contains none of the above elements. So even though I like this movie, I have to face the fact that it will never make it to DVD.

Get on with your life. Get the VHS version of it along with a VHS version of Heavenly Kid from 1985.

Hey......at least Threes Company and Back to the Future are now available on DVD.

21 It's about time!!!
I have loved this movie since I was a kid! I am so excited for it to be released on DVD. As soon as it is available, I will be buying it. This movie is a classic, and I loved all the little martian guys. =)
22 Damn good flick
This movie made no sense to me when I was a kid, but it was still ill. When i was older i realized he went back in time, knowing that made the movie even iller. Who wouldn't want to ride in a space ship with a robot eye, and beach boys tunes.
23 Awesome Movie! Derrick loved it so much!!!
I just watched this movie last night and I would have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I was surprised at how this movie was very entertaining and it has special effects that rivals today's movies. My favorite line was when the alien ship (Max) says to a fat dude: "Too much twinkles eh...oink, oink!" Hahaha, that just got me off guard...i couldn't believe an alien would be talking smack! I was rolling in laughter! Thats one classic line and now i'm using it on my good cousin Derrick!
24 Its finally in DVD
I only saw this film one time in my life and when it was over, I instantly fell in love it. Tried too buy in stores but it was like it never existed, I couldent find it anywhere. Now its coming out in DVD, AWSOME! I higly recommend this film.
25 One of the best to be on dvd
Flight of the Navigator, wow. I haven't seen it a long time, but it's still my favorite movie of all disney flicks. Ever since I heard of DVD I have been checking at amazon.com week after week for it to come out, and now I surely hope it does, and SOON!
26 Review - what else is there to say?
I always enjoyed "Flight of The Navigator" when I was a kid, and ever since DVD technology was introduced I've been waiting for it to be released in that format.. but it never did, and still hasn't come out yet. I hope that it is released on DVD very soon; hopefully before my social security expires. However, unless my luck changes, it will never come out on DVD.

There's my "review", thanks.

27 The Black Lab is from Columbus Ohio
The movie is great! My dog is the Black labrador, the one catching frisbee in the beginning of the movie. His name was Ben. He placed fifth in the world at the Gaines Frisbee Dog competition. He was hit by a car the next year. He was an amazing animal. This is the only footage we have of him.

Great movie!

28 The Best Family film of the 80's!
I've seen this film on vhs, it was great. But on dvd, which I was waiting for a long time makes it the best. It's the perfect family film, the plot to me was actually enteresting for a 1986 disney film. I saw it in theaters, for the first time, and I really liked it. Paul Ruebens voices Max to me was really enjoyable. I've seen it at least 15-20 times but still, it's one of my favorites. I would recommend this to others. On a scale of 1-10 I'd give it a 7.5
29 NOT just for kids!
I'm a sci-fi fan from way back. I've got in my collection, War of the Worlds, WestWorld, Forbidden Planet, Alien(s), and many, many more. Flight of the Navigator is an enjoyable movie to watch. My son and I went to the 1st showing of it in our town. We also went to several other showings of it. While many of the other reviewers remember seeing this as a child, I'm here to tell you, It's NOT a kids movie!
Flight of the Navigator is on a level with the Ray Harryhausen movies, if you're familiar with them. They're movies that are clean enough for the whole family, thought provoking if you let them, and just plain entertaining, without being dull, boring tripe!
If like to watch movies over, and over again. And you'ld like to watch them by yourself, or with your family, get this movie. It's an enjoyable break in your day.
30 Flight of the Navigato
I really loved this movie as a kid and I have looked for it for the last few years. I want to show my kids the "special effects" my day had. As well as the great joy I experienced as a kid.
I REALLY hope Disney does remake of this on DVD I would and it to my collection in a sec.
31 Nostalgic Eighties Flick
I have nostalgic memories from watching this film as a kid in the eightees. Along with "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "ET: the Extra-Terrestrial", this was one of my favorite sci-fi films. The concept of aliens and UFOs fascinated me. Unfortunately, it seems to have fallen out of circulation. Luckily I was able to get a copy of the VHS some time back. I hope Disney will re-release this film on DVD so we can see it in its original widescreen aspect ratio.

Joey Cramer is David Freeman, a boy living in a picture perfect Florida town in 1978 with his parents and bratty kid brother. However, he finds his life changed when he is knocked out in the forest for a few minutes, or so he thinks. When he returns home, he finds that it is 1986. David has been missing for 8 years, yet David himself has not aged. David's parents are now eight years older, and his bratty kid brother has grown up into a quite decent 16-year-old. David's quest to find out what happened to him will take him to an alien spacecraft run by a computer named Max.

The first half of the film is structured like an eerie mystery as David and the police try to piece together what happened to David. This is perfectly complemented by Alan Silvestri's eerie score. The film loses some of its mystery later on, but it's still highly enjoyable. The spacecraft looks incredible, and the scenes where David gets to fly the spacecraft are really neat. I think though I liked Max better before he assumed his Pee-Wee Herman voice (voiced by Pee-Wee himself).

The ending nicely tied things up. Too bad we don't get to see what becomes of David's crush on the local girl.

32 Please bring this movie back on video and DVD
Flight of the Navigator was one of my favorite movies when I was a Child. I would love to see it come out on DVD because I like to collect movies and this is one that I need to add to my collection.
33 A Great Disney Family Movie
This is a great family movie. I enjoyed watching it when it was first released at the movies and I still enjoy watching it. I wish that Disney Studios would release this movie on DVD. If they ever get around to it I will add it to my collection.
34 Reminiscent of the best of the Heinlein young adult novels..
Flight of the Navigator is a far better movie than we'd have a right to suspect.

Plot spoiler if you read further:

A few minutes into this film, 12-year-old David Freeman (Joey Cramer) is on an
errand to retrieve his 8-year-old brother, Jeff, when he falls into a gulley and is
knocked out. Regaining consciousness, David returns to his house, thinking only a
few minutes have passed, and instead of his parents and brother finds a locked
door and an elderly couple living there.

Taken to the police station, David is identified by computer records as a boy
reported missing eight years before. Despite the fact that he hasn't aged, he's taken
to the Freeman's at a different house nearby, and when he sees his parents
obviously older, he faints. He returns to consciousness again on a gurney on his
way to a hospital bed. A few minutes later, while his parents are called out of the
room by a somber-faced doctor, David is left alone with his brother Jeff -- who is
now 16.

This is ostensibly a Disney movie for kids -- and later on there is a lot of comedic
Disney hijinks -- but the first half hour of the movie, as David and his family deal
with the trauma of his time relocation, are some of the most heart-rending and
chilling sequences I've seen in any film.

Spoiler over.

This movie reminded me of some of the time-relativity sequences in Robert A.
Heinlein's novel, Time for the Stars. The characters are well written and the actors
do an excellent job, particularly in the scenes between Joey Cramer and Matt
Adler, as 16-year-old Jeff. The distraught parents, Cliff de Young and Veronica
Cartwright, are also excellent -- and Howard Hesseman and Sarah Jessica Parker
round out a great supporting cast.

Special kudos are due to Paul Reubens (best known for his character Pee Wee
Herman) who was originally credited under his own name for lending his voice to a
major character in this film, but had his name removed from the credits, replaced
by the pseudonym "Pall Mall," after Reubens was arrested for alleged indecent
exposure committed in a movie theater seat. (I've never understood how Reubens
was convinced to plead "no contest" to the charge, after theater security cameras
showed him in the lobby buying popcorn at the time of the alleged offense.)
Considering that Disney's Hollywood Pictures division released Powder, directed
by a convicted and confessed child molester, Disney should show some backbone
and restore Reubens real name to the credits.

If you can get ahold of this movie, see it -- and maybe Disney will see fit to release
it again -- on DVD, I hope.

35 Great movie - vote for it !!!
This movie is a great adventure. It is great for all ages. I ask everyone to vote for this movie on Disney's web site so, they will release it again. Just go to [there website] and vote.
36 laughter's the best medicine
Excellent movie. My husband, myself and our teen daughter loved this movie. Luckily I was fortunate enough to purchase it here on VHS when it was still available. I would like to see it on DVD also. Like the previous reviewers, I found myself wanting "The Dark Crystal". A while back, it too was not available. I wrote an email to Jim Henson studios asking if they planned to release it. I was told "NO", but lo and behold, a few months later I bought it here and on DVD at that. Send e-mails to Disney asking if they plan to re-release it. It can't hurt.
37 Flight of the Navigator
this video is very interesting and it is a history real,I would like that it left in dvd to be able to comprarla, only I see it in television
38 This should be re-released
I love The Flight of the Navigator. i always have but when it was out on video my Mom didn't have enough money to buy it. We were to busy trying to keep things together in our house hold. We saw The Flight Of The Navigator on t.v and i knew that once we had enough money we would be able to buy it. Well the years passed and we are out of our depression period with enough money. But one problem.. It's not in stores!! We despretly need to have this great movie re-released so the memory is not forgotten. And i think others agree!
39 Part of the Movie Legacy of my Generation
This is a fantastic movie. Brilliantly imaginative, well-written, performed, directed. "Flight of the Navigator" is one of those movies that represents my generation's childhood (with the likes of E.T.), and the fantasy, imagination, and wonder that was so prevalent in the 1980's and seems somehow lost today.

This movie is a teasure from a recent but gone era. It's a kid's movie, and an adult's movie. It's a movie for everyone - now and forever.

And the soundtrack is stunning as well. This movie needs to be released again on VHS and DVD. Perhaps someone will read our reviews who can help.

40 Flight of the Navigator - An A+ movie
Flight of the Navigator is a movie like no other. For a movie of its time, the special effects are amazing. It is for any age viewer, and its replay value is endless! When I was younger I watched Flight of the Navigator all the time. I hope it will be released again, especially for DVD. It is worth every effort!
41 memories
i remember this movie from way back from when i was a kid....and its been 15 years and im still looking for the vhs so i can go back and relive that....that is about one of the only movies that i remeber from childhood and i still love it.....i have heard of reviews that it was ok and that its not one of the most memorable movies that we will have...but for me it was one of the top 5 of my childhood....
42 A classic movie for all age groups
This movie carries a wonderful story packaged in a mix of comedy, sci-fi adventure and human drama- young boy abducted by alien machine, enters into time-warp, returns home & finds so many things changed and finally re-united with his family. All of this accomplished through many hilarious scenes with his alien captor/friend.
43 Wonderful
I used to watch The Flight of the Navigator all the time, it's a great movie for people of all ages. I am truely hoping it will be re-released so I can get a copy.
44 Flight of the Navigator
This movie is great for everyone. It's a Disney classic in my eyes, and I would love to see it re-released on video. I would love a DVD of it. As a child, I watched this movie over and over. It ranked up in the top, and after seeing again after many years, it still brings back that same wonderment and love. I recommend anyone who is willing to use their imagination to watch this movie!
45 A Childhood Memory
This movie was both breath taking and inspiring to watch as a young child. I recommend it for all ages and hope that it can be as important in another childs life like it was in mine. It's a beautiful story. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for it's re-release.
46 The Flight of the Navigator
One of my favorite movies for years, this movie brings out the importance of family and living our lives by enjoying each minute, never taking anything for granted. Recommended for family viewing and for older children.
47 A Great Movie for Kids and Adults
We have been searching for a copy to purchase and only to find it out of circulation. My son request this movie every time we rent movies. It is rarely available then, I've even asked the rental place if we could buy there copy and they said no, it's always out. Great for the whole family, and we never tire of it!
48 Flight of the Imagination
Wonderful movie for kids and adults alike. It's a kids' movie, but grownups will enjoy this one with as much child-like enthusiasm. Two hours of innocent fun & adventure! Wish I could find a few to buy for friends and self.
49 it rules!
this movie is my favorite movie in the whole world and i would reccomend this movie to anyone in the world
50 One of the Best Sci-Fi Children's Movie out there!
When I was younger I saw this film. I loved it, it made my imagination soar. I want to find a copy of it for my nine year old son. I know that he would love this. I can't explain the feeling I had when I saw this film. It rates real hi with me. Other films that can't be beat would be The Explorers, and The Last Starfighter. All these 80's Sci-Fi films were very entertaining.
51 Still entertaining to all ages
I'm so glad I bought a copy when my teenagers were little, now I loan it out to friends with young children. They really enjoy it! Would be fun to see on the big screen...Disney, what do you think?
52 Greatly entertaining and thought provoking.
Great family film with comedy along with touching moments. You root for the boy to outsmart the authorities and right a mistake.
53 Great high-tech sci-fi child action-adventure with attitude
Though this film might actually be improved by cutting out a few dated or odd lines, here is the best space-ship ever. This will make your 8 to 14 year old's mind fly as this child has to be the navigator.

Disney, please re-print this film. Gordon H.

Quote of the Day:
