Not even the executives at Disney could have predicted the runaway success of this live-action movie inspired by Jay Ward's goofy 1960s cartoon character. Not only did
George make a killing at the box office, but Disney's marketing wizards turned it into one of their best-selling videos. It's hard to begrudge the movie's success, even if this is the kind of mindless entertainment that caters to the lowest common denominator. In any case, it's obvious that kids love this movie, in which the idiotic George (Brendan Fraser) repeatedly swings into trees and attracts the attention of a lovely jungle explorer (Leslie Mann) who decides to call off her engagement to a wealthy snob (Thomas Hayden Church) in favor of the vine-swinging hunk with an elephant named Shep (that thinks it's a dog) and an ape named Ape (with a proper Brit voice provided by John Cleese). Filled with slapstick gags and some funny special effects, the movie can be a bit of a trial for adults, but it's a hilarious treat for its intended audience.

1 Great George of the Jungle movie
This movie was heart warming. And my mother loved it too. Great music for the scenes. Very likeable. If you havn't seen this movie than you should. Give it a try.
2 True to the spirit of the original!
I was absolutely thrilled when I heard that Disney had taken a cartoon I loved from the late 60s and given it the big screen treatment. Naturally, I expected it would die a quick death at the box office, and was delighted when it was actually a hit of some stature. It says something about a show that only had 17 episodes in its original run when so many people remember it as well as they do this many years later. The good news is, they stayed true to the spirit of how Jay Ward did the cartoon, right down to the discussions between the characters onscreen and the narrator (in this case a great impersonation and tribute to the late Paul Frees, one of animation's greatest voice-over people) and the requisite (not to mention obvious) really bad puns...and all the things that made the cartoon as funny and hip as it was back in 1967...they're all here in the movie. Don't look for War & Peace here, just a really enjoyable and funny movie for young and old alike that never gets risque or mean spirited. Brendan Fraser obviously enjoyed doing this (he must have or he wouldn't have played the starring role in Dudley Do-Right, another Jay Ward classic character)...John Cleese gave the perfect voice to the Ape character (very proper and British). This one's a loving tribute to the mad genius of Jay Ward. If you don't think so, you're overanalyzing it or you're looking too hard for meaning here. Get some popcorn, put this one in and get ready for some good laughs...and just try to get that theme song out of your head!
3 WATCH OUT FOR THAT TREE
Taking an animated cartoon and bringing it to the big screen live action can be a risky and oftentimes disastrous venture (Rocky and Bullwinkle, Dudley Do Right, e.g.). But with GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE, director Sam Weisman and screenwriters Dana Oldsen and Aubrey Wells bring the loony jungle hero to life and make it as much fun as a cartoon. Brendan Fraser brings his physical and thespian assets to the role of George, a loveable lunk who manages to survive hitting hundreds of trees, and other assorted obstacles. It's in the true spirit of the cartoons, indeed. I also liked the narrator whose occasional forays into the action itself were fun and reminiscent of Fractured Fairy Tales, also a Jay Ward creation. Lovely Leslie Mann (Last Man Standing) is a good Ursula, her prim socialite a perfect foil for the loveable George. John Cleese adds his vocals to the role of Ape, the Ape, and it's a great addition. Oscar hopeful Thomas Haden Church (Sideways) plays the snooty fiance of Mann, giving an effective snooty performance. Catch Holland Taylor, Richard Roundtree and John Bennett Perry in key supporting roles. Of course, the monkeys, elephant, toucan and assorted creatures steal most of their scenes, too.
GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE is goofy, silly fun, and I found myself enjoying it immensely.
4 Actors Were Not Very Appealing
Brendan Fraser was not bad as the notorious jungle king, but Leslie Mann wasn't that great either.
5 Cheap Disney movie with Frasier being a Doofus
I guess what I find so annoying about this movie is that Michael Eisner pretty much gave everyone including Bradan Frasier, a huge pay check, to make a movie that is full of recycled jokes from Three Stooges movies and Fraiser makes the worst casting choice to play George of the Jungle. The cartoon was forgetable (other then the Theme Song). But this movie is enough to give anyone ulcers.
6 suprisingly good!have a heart.check it out.
this is based on a very old cartoon.the star, brandon frasier is in a few good movies that somehow turn out good.but hes such a wussy.well, george getsadopted by apes in the african jungle as a baby and has lived there all his life.he speaks little english, but communicates well with many different animals.ersala, her man,and some explorers are doing a documentary when they are attacked by a wild animal.her sociopathic boyfriend turns into a big wuss and george saves ersala.she wakes up in his tree house and slowly they fall in love.well, this does not please her man who comes back with some bandits intent on capturing the great white ape who they dont know is george.george,in another part even visits sanfransisco.its great fun!the kids will love it!since disneys been slacking lately in the creativity department, this one miracously ranks up there with some of the best ones in the last 6-7 years. there is some gross parts involving elephant poop.you serious types probaly wont like it.ersala is HOT in a dumb blonde sort of way.her x is a real jerk.theres a talking ape also.hes pretty cool as far as apes go.this movie gets a bad rap,but its coolof brandons movies, this is definately one of his best.right up there with airheads, bedazzled and encino man.most the rest of his movies suck though.
7 What is funnier?
Dudley Do-right or George Of the Jungle? They both were cartoons, they both have the same nararator, and they both feature Brendan Fraser as the star. Oh, and they're both equally silly and funny!
8 This is so stupid you have to buy it
If you have labeled movie shelves at home, you'll have to cut this DVD into thirds. One 3rd would go in stupid, another in funny and another in classics. This movie is so stupid its funny and its extreme stupidity makes it a classic! Ha! Ha!
9 So stupid it's funny.
George, who I'm assuming was raised by apes, is the king of the jungle (lol, NOT). Somehow he manages to meet Ursula, who has a wierdo for a fiance, and George falls in love with her. She takes him back to the city and he does all kind of wild stuff.
Meanwhile, two poachers in the jungle run across Ape the talking ape and manage to capture him. So this brings George and Ursula back to the jungle so George can save his best friend.
So stupid that it's hilarious, but I'm sorry, I can never take Brenden Fraser seriously again.
10 where is the widescreen version???
I love this movie - the wit is funny, the sight gags are funny and the characters are endearing - very hard to do when you are creating a movie from cartoon characters. But where is the widescreen version?? The whole reason for buying a DVD is having the chance to see the movie as it was originally envisioned. If I want to watch full frame, I'll watch television.
11 IN THE JUNGLE. 17th april 2004.
George of the jungle is all mostly in the jungle. He looks after animals, and finds a perfect friend that turns into his wife. He and his wife decide on having a kid. Fun for anyone. Can't wait to see the second. A fun movie.
12 The Funnier Side Of Tarzan (and hotter, too...)
If you thought you saw a funny movie, you haven't seen this. "George of the Jungle" brings out the funniest things in the world that will make you 'bust a gut'! Brendan Fraser plays George, the loveable, hilarious jungle man who swoons after a "perfectly permed heiress" (my favorite line) named Ursula. Shortly after meeting George, she decides to drop her engagement to Lyle (Thomas Haden Church)...and the story goes on from there. From beginning to end, this movie is nothing short of humorous; it brings out the funnier (and hotter) version of Tarzan!! ENJOY!!! :^)
13 I love this movie!
I gotta admit that I love this movie, especially the campy bits. In case you don't know, this is a remake of Tarzan, but in this case, Baby George (Tarzan) falls out of an airplane and is raised by some very intelligent furry primates. Ursula (Jane) comes along while she is on safari with her very arrogant fiance' Lyle, and George gets to rescue Ursula. George is shocked to discover that this fella' is a woman!
Along the way, we get to see George fight a stuffed lion, see him play fetch with a little elephant (who reminds me of my Malemute), run into bridges and dress in flowing gowns. We are treated to Ursula and Lyle's engagement party with a smashed cake and an absent Lyle, and where Ursula's mother threatens George, causing him to leave San Francisco. Of course, we know how it ends- Tarzan always gets the girl, and this version is no different.
There is nothing deep here for adults, but my young children find it fascinating. Brendan Fraser was very buff for this movie, but has a sweet innocence about him that makes him a very loveable character. Leslie Mann as Ursula is beautiful, but sweet and kind as well.
14 George is HOT!!
Family, shmamily. I watched this movie, and will watch it again, because George is mostly naked and gorgeous. I loved his innocence and non-stop quest to get his girl. And even tho it's a kids movie it made me laugh. A sexy sweet jungle man who doesnt have a clue he's gorgeous. Good movie therapy for the single woman.
15 Watch out for that... TREE!!!
George of the Jungle is a hilarious, witty movie for all ages. Featuring Brendan Fraiser as George, who falls in love with a young, pretty woman who is travelling to the jungle to make a movie with her crew. George saves Ursula (the woman) before a lion attacks her, and their love blooms from their. Unfortunately, Lyle, Urusula's feonce, and Urusula's "evil" mother, Beatrice, are plotting to get rid of George. Sound like a silly movie? It is. But it's funny! I reccomend renting it before seeing it, because it might not be your type of movie..
16 the rockin movie
This movie is to good for words! I loved it. it's so hallarious! 5 stars all the way!
17 What a body
The story is too silly for words. I turn the volume down and drool over a half naked Brendan Fraser. What a HOTTIE!
18 hehe
my only complaint with this movie is the annoying Usurla. her voice just grates on my nerves. hilarious otherwise though.
19 Watch out for that tree! :)))
This is the most hilarious movie I ever watch. I love George especially in `armani`, I love the narator, I love the brother ape... For a good laugh don`t miss `George of the Jungle` and unlike this one, stay out of the sequel `George of the Jungle 2`....
20 Very funny
I have always been a fan of the cartoon, so of course I was
wondering how the movie would compare to it. I was pleasantly
surprised to find the movie far superior to the very good cartoon. Fraser is endearingly goofy; he's a perfect fit for
the role of the innocent and sweet George. Then we have an
elephant as a puppy and an erudite ape. Good flick, very
highly recommended. You won't be disappointed, I promise.
21 Good clean wholesome corny fun
It seems that some reviewers find it necessary to insult the intelligence of anyone who enjoyed this movie...and that's really too bad. "George of the Jungle" could never be accused of being deep...but it should appeal to anyone with the slightest appreciation for parody, slapstick, or the old Jay Ward cartoons.
If nothing else, Brendan Fraser in a loincloth is worth watching. And Greg Cruttwell (of "2 Days in the Valley" fame) and Abraham Benrubi (Jerry from "E.R.") as Tiger and Weevil (ummmm...I mean, as the two inept bounty hunters) are a hoot.
22 George watch out for that tree
I watched George of the Jungle on the Disney Channel last night, and only laughed once. And that is when George's dog Shep appeared. Shep is an elphant that thinks he is a dog. And guess who trained him to think he is a dog. As the movie opens, a young boy is missing for the rest of his group. Where we hear the song "George of the Jungle", up into the songs ends the part is in animation. And 25 years later George of the Jungle is grown to man. But little does he know a group his miles away in the jungle. Including a woamn named Ursula Stanhope (Leslie Mann) and a man named Lyle Van de Groot (Thomas Haden Church). Who is Ursula's fiance. But she loses her group and is saved by George (Brenda Frasher) from a lion. Thomas Haden Church looks diffrent in this movie than he looked like in 3000 Miles to Graceland. I think the movie could have been better without the narrator whose deep voice is perfromed by Keith Scott. If you like movies that came from animated tv shows, this is also a must watch.
23 Better than the TV-series!
This movie is better than the Tv-series, including the times where George was wiping Ursula, and then looked down her shirt, and then the time, the african got hurt and got really big bo bos, and the time where George was done and came out naked. This even has a great cast: Brendan Fraser, Leslie Mann, Thomas Hayden Church, Richard Roundtree, and John Cleese as the voice of "an ape named 'Ape'". I give this a ***** (5 out of 5). This is even better than Tarzan.
I SEE A SEQUEL!
24 Lyle!!!
Thomas Haden Church is AWESOME as Lyle Van de Groot!
He's so sexy! I'd take a shower with him under the big expensive waterfall set anytime!
Oh, if Ursula doesn't want him, I'll gladly take him. Somebody has to love a nice, funny, evil man.
25 Dumb but yet funny
When I first saw this movie I kept saying to my self "why am I laughing at this stupid movie?" Comedy has to be a very hard genre to do because you need to hit the buttons just right. The number of sight gags is reminisent of "Airplane!" and "Hot Shots!" Brenden Fraser was terrific. In his more recent films he has shown himself to be a very versitile actor especially in "Gods and Monsters" The elephant who acts like a dog is purely hysterical. John Cleese was perfect as the talking ape named ape. The scene in which ape teaches George how to get Ursula is purely histerical. Out of the three recent live adaptations of Jay Ward cartoons, George of the Jungle is the best.
26 A great date movie!
No, I'm serious, this really IS a great date movie! (And I actually did watch it on a date, by the way.) It has a sweet romance and plenty of slapstick and witty humor. And not forgetting to mention Brendan Fraser's appeal to both men and women (women like him for his charm and good looks, men like him for his goofiness and ability at physical humor). It really does take a talented actor like Fraser to be able to portray a cartoon character and pull it off so well. He is the only actor who can smack into trees and speak with the vocabulary of a 5-year-old and still make the audience root for him as a hero!
I think many people will be surprised at how entertaining, well-written, and well-acted this movie is. Some automatically write it off as a "kids movie", but I believe only adults can really fully appreciate its wit and satire. I was one of those people once--I thought it would be a stupid kids movie until I started reading some good reviews about it and decided to see it in the theater with a friend. It quickly became one of my favorite movies, and I've been watching it frequently with friends, family, and dates ever since!
27 I LOVE IT!!!
[...] this is the best thing since sliced bread. Sooooo funny and cute! I laughed so hard when I first saw it in the theaters that I swear the people around me thought that either I was a lunatic or I thought the seats were tickly. Brendan Frasier at his VERY best, totally hilarious! A definite must-rent or better, must-buy!
28 "George Of The Jungle" is funny!
This movie or should I say remake is funny, why it is even better than the cartoon, and it's made from Walt Disney Pictures, why I give this 5 stars.
29 Swinging Disney Film
This film was made in the great tradition of Walt Disney's live action films aimed at the adolescent audience that his studio produced in the 60s and continued into the 70s. It works beautifully tweaking the formula for the 90's audiences. Brendan Fraser is perfect as George in his own likeable but not very bright way. You really feel for this guy because he wants to do what is right and get the job done. The special effects are excellent because they not only look good but they add to the effect of the storytelling and create an innovative world for the audience to immerse themselves into. The casting is also good. Thomas Hayden Church as an equally not-very-bright cad is perfect. You almost feel sorry for this guy. John Cleese doing the voice of Ape is a riot. He has several funny scenes, especially near the very end. This is film is excellent no matter what age you are. I highly recommend this one.
30 Just when you thought DUMB couldn't get any dumber...YIKES!
I teach 4th grade and have opportunities to treat my class to down-time in form of "video afternoons" about once each month. When I sreened this "comedy" for possible viewing in my classroom (I can't afford unpleasant surprises), I was soon convinced that 10 year olds' intelligence would be insulted if presented with this nonsense.
This "big budget" film version can't hold a candle to the cartoon series I remember from my childhood. What happened? Why do Hollywood Executives assume that today's kids are a few notches behind their parents? The jokes seemed "dummied down", which makes them appear "forced" and completely un-funny.
This film, obviously, did not "make it" to the show. The only film I've "screened" lately even worse than this one was "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls". Destroy that one on sight!
This year's biggest hit with my 4th graders: "Dennis The Menace" (with Walter Matthau) and anything starring the character "Mr. Bean" (available in bite-size TV show format, 2 30 min. episodes per video).
31 18-month-old got the joke
Okay, this is one of my little boy's favorite movies. Granted he hasn't seen very many in his short life, but I can't believe how he took to it! It's second only to a free Jack Stone video that we got from the Lego company. I just had to share that he laughs every time it gets to the part where Ursula meets Ape for the first time, and terrified, she asks George "What does it want?!" and Ape replies exasperatedly, "IT wants ITS physician's desk reference, if you don't mind" and picks up a heavy tome to read. My son laughs and laughs while saying "Book!" I personally enjoy this movie very much, and I would much rather watch this one over and over than something like Barney!
32 Great supporting cast
This movie is pretty funny. In fact, most of the funniest parts are from George's intelligent gorilla friend or the safari guides. Good fun.
33 George of Jungle hits the top on the fun scale!!
Starting out in the movie we see George for what he really is, a fun and loving character, where kids and adults too can join this person.Adapted from the hit caroon on cable network channel: Cartoon Network, this movie is bound to be a classic hit in your household!Me as a reviewer of this movie I can tell you I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!It's fun and humerous, and a classical-new twist to our everyday real-life boring dramas, or soaps we call television! This movie paints a real world, in the heart of Africa,in spite of our original city-life ones.It also lets us get to know this character on friendly terms.Once you witness the magic of this disney movie you'll be crashing into trees too!
34 George is great!
I have a 7, 5 and 4 year old who watch this movie endlessly! If your kids are out of grade school I would not reccommend it. It is funny, simple, entertaining and a movie you can watch over and over again and not get sick of. I could only claim Toy Story as a movie like that before George of the Jungle. If you have kids between 4 and 10 they will love it! Enjoy!
35 George is hilarious!!
We love George of the Jungle. Our four year old can't get enough of this flick. He swings from the bookshelves whenever he can get away with it. He also gives George's yell whenever he is watching. This is a fun and silly movie for all to enjoy.
36 Which came first: The Moose or the Ape?
This movie is good, but didn't do the original cartoon series, created by the magnificiant Jay Ward, who also created The Bullwinkle Show and Dudely Do-Right of the Mounties, enough justice. The opening animated credits would have been better if they actually made them look like characters from the show(like they did in the later two Jay Ward movies).
37 Another RIOT
A movie. An epic! A phenomanom! ONE OF THE GREATEST EVENTS IN MOTION PICTURE HISTORY!!!!! Nah. Just a very funny movie, clean enough for kids. Smart enough for adults. Full of sight gags, Word gags, and a narrator who argues with the cast. There are no bad performances here, just a ton of fun. Well written, well acted, well worth the $20 bucks or whatever. BUY THIS TAPE!
38 Fun Movie, Poor DVD Package
A friend gave my kids this movie--I didn't buy it because the idea of a live-action GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE seemed silly to me. Fortunately for my family, this movie is silly in a good way, gleefully silly, with lots of physical comedy, puns, in-jokes, and high ridiculousness. This movie has good-natured fun. The casting of Fraser and Mann as George and Ursula is inspired, and Cleese as the voice of Ape works wonders. Movies that elicit joyful instead of derisive laughter deserve our attention, so unless you're sensitive about the requisite animal excrement jokes (the easiest way to avoid a "G" rating), watch this movie with your kids. Then watch it with your buddies. It might even be a good date movie.
The DVD package, however, offers another example of Disney's charging premium prices for few extras. Unfortunately, the disc is also pan-and-scan instead of widescreen. If you already own the videotape, you might as well wait and hope that Disney upgrades the DVD package.
39 Rumble in the Jungle
Elementary school kids will love this live action version of the cartoon you remember being funnier. Risque humor and dumbed down story will not appeal to adults, but the funny narration and Thomas Haden Church will. This is no classic, and barely works.
40 Hilarious send-up...
If you watched the originals as a kid (in re-runs or not), and enjoyed the sardonic humor (just as offered up in Rocky and Bullwinkle) and horrible puns, this send-up did an excellent job of offering tribute to the original without slavishly being stuck in a rut.
The plot is a bit weak and standard, but it serves as a vehicle to allow the film-makers to basically entertain themselves and those who enjoyed the humor of the original series. The originals were all about set up for the jokes anyway and this movie serves as a similar vehicle.
Certainly not food for a sequel (I hope), and perhaps not very suitable for people (adults) who didn't understand or otherwise care for the original humor or are expecting the film to stand totally on it's own, it is still great entertainment for children and old fans and may tickle your funny bone even if you haven't experience the originals.
I guess I could offer up 5 stars, yet I don't think this is the best movie ever. I still think it's an extremely entertaining piece for it's intended audience.
41 #2 movie of all time
This is the second best movie of all time next to groundhog day. Don't rent it from the video store, buy it here on dvd. I couldn't have been more impressed when i first saw it. 5 stars.
42 Fall Over Funny
I love it, it has to be one of my most favoite movies. It will make you fall over laughing. Has a good storie line too.
43 Completely wretched
The only reason I watched this movie is because I think that Brendan Fraser is a good actor. But upon seeing it I saw just how awful a movie can get. There is not one funny part in the movie. It is totally moronic and unfunny.
44 Watch it AS A KID
I loved this movie, and can watch it repeatedly- and I'm an adult! The headline reviews for George all make reference to it's shortcomings as adult fare, so just do what I did- sit down and watch it with the kids AS A KID. Yes, it can be corny; yes, the one liners can be predictable; and yes, it can be LOTS of fun if you'll just drop your big-person pretensions and be eight again. My daughter and I can watch this as buddies, not as parent/child, and for that I am very grateful.
45 Pretty good for a kid flick...The Review...
Well, first off I would like to "admit", the first viewing of this film did not go over well with my friend and myself. I thought it was boring and just plain dumb. It lacked something I like to call, PLOT! Well, those times have changed and I have sort of soled-out! Just kidding, it is better than before, though weak in thought. I first saw the film when it was on television and now I rented it on DVD.
The movie stars Brendan Fraser who plays the title role, George of the Jungle. He is not really musculer but I guess neither was the original character. This film is like Dudley Do Right, but this is MUCH, MUCH better! If you are stuck having to pick which of the two to watch, see this w-a-y before you see Dudley Do Right. The film is about George of the Jungle, he looks for love in a girl named Ursilla, a woman from America and George just can not understand why he starts having all of these feelings for another person. His mate. John Clease does an OK job of playing the voice for the character An Ape Named Ape. Ape is George's mentor and guide through his life until he leaves the "Heart of the Jungle."
This is an over all good film, GREAT for kids. If I was a little youger when this film came out, I would of loved it. If you liked this movie I would suggest the following movies, Dudley Do Right also starring Brendan Fraser, 101 Dalamations both the original and the remake and a host of others.
Hoped I helped, Have a good one!
Ryan
46 HILARIOUS & OUCH!
If I am going to sum the movie up, it will be in 2 words --- Hilarious & OUCH! 2 thumbs up to Brendan Fraser aka George who was ssssoooo hilarious. However, he is somewhat typecasted into these silly comedy roles but I've seen him act in With Honors, & I'd say he's GREAT! Ouch, becaue George, despite the long years he has spent in the jungle, still has not mastered the art of swinging from one vine to another, & often bump head-on to trees. Really a big OUCH!
Oh, before I forget,I love that smart talking ape! Such a shame, George did not take after the ape's agility :-)
47 OK
I donno, I didn' like this that much, and I really didn't think it had many funny parts at all, but it wasn't too bad.
48 George of the jungle
My son is mad behind the movie. the only sad part is the video i got it from a friend and i am not able to get another copy anywhere in india of the movie. please help
49 Stupid, boring, and predictable story
IF like to watch a stupid movie where you can predic all comming actions then you waiste your money buy this movie. I had kids watching this movie for the time and they asked me after 1/2 hour of play to play something else.
50 Great Movie
I really liked this movie. Brendan Fraser is really good as the title character and worked well with Leslie Mann. I thought this movie had a lot of laughs and is definitely worth a look.
51 Boring and stupid!
All I have to say if your a George of the Jungle fan which I'm not you'll probably like it but if your not a fan of the old cartoon show or never seen it then stay far away from this movie. This movie was really dumb. When I saw this movie in the theaters I almost walked out. It's one of the worst Disney movies I have ever seen. I think Brendan Fraser is one of the worst actors and the cast in this movie is way far off. I think this is a kind of movie that little kids might enjoy, big kids might not like this movie. It's so cheesy and the jokes are pretty lame. So whatever you do not RENT this video!
52 great ;-))
Whenever I watch this film, I laugh with tears... George, Ape and Narrator' explanations suits well. Highly recomendable ....
53 Goofy fun
So what if this movie was goofy..that was the point! This quirky comedy ranks high on my recommended list..its just too good to pass up! Besides, who can pass up the hunky Brandon in a loincloth...certainly not I! :-)
54 Sorry to report, Disney really misses on this one!
I shudder to report just how corny this film is! What was formerly a cute TV series becomes, in this live-action version, an excuse for mugging and triteness. Though the supporting characters are worthily acted, George himself just does not come across. The main humor comes about with his repeated bashing into trees, and this is not quite enough to create a truly funny film.
The color and effects are dazzling and sharp, and the DVD is a good production. The dog-like elephant is well depicted, and pretty funny. Just afraid the film is too slight to be worth a viewing.
55 "A Classic Element of Physical comedy........"
This is a movie that only gets better the more you watch it. I have seen this movie more times than I can remember and I still feel it is one of the best. It has the perfect cast, and a great performance by Brendon Fraser. I look forward to seeing this movie again soon.
56 Fraser & Mann have star appeal... and a sense of humor!
Taking for granted that this is a kids' movie based on an underrated 60's cartoon character, the results that this movie gets are astonishing. Brendan Fraser builds a "believable" George that finds a perfect match in Mann's Ursula. The pace of the movie is perfect and the jokes are funny and on target. The perfect cast seems like an circus ensemble and makes you forget any comparison with the original toons. If you want to have a very good time with your kids or small brothers this is really an excellent alternative. Buy it.
57 One of my favorite movies!
I have seen this movie many, many times and I don't think I'll ever get sick of it. George is an inept but endearing hero. This movie is very funny, but best of all, it is a great love story. The soundtrack is also excellent!
58 Two thumbs up!
This movie is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Disney did a very good job making this movie enjoyable for adults and kids. Brendan Frasier is the perfect person for the role of George. Go and buy this movie and laugh your heart out!
59 Well done Disney!
George Of The Jungle is a fantastic family movie - from George Fighting Lions to Hilarious asides with the narrator. The narration is fantastic - a very funny element of the film. John Cleese does a great job as "Ape", a talking (guess what! ) Ape! There are lots of daring exciting moments, but as the narrator says at the beginning of the film "don't worry, nobaody dies in this movie; they just get very bad BOO BOO's!" Great movie to watch with your children, or on your own. In fact you could even watch this movie during a lads/girls night in! Oh yes watch out for that......
60 Absolutely hysterical!
I never laughed so hard in my life! Wonderfully silly movie. I enjoyed the cartoon when I was younger and was really excited to see the movie. I didn't believe it could actually be done. If you're looking for just a fun movie, then you have to see George of the Jungle. Those of you without a sense of humour...don't bother.
61 Lighten up!
This movie is terrific! My kids and I love it! As for the people who give it one star, I say lighten up. The film is based on a popular Saturday morning CARTOON!!!!
62 Adults need adult humor in movies kids watch again and again
This movie was the first I took my son to watch in the theater, and now that it is on video, he watches it at least 6 times a week. There is no real violence in it, the human body is nothing to be ashamed of, and as "There's Something About Mary" proved, everyone needs a dose of stupidity at one time or another. The only problem I have with the movie is the use of the word "ass" in 2 lines, but kids learn that anyway. It's a great movie.
63 I love this movie! :)
Sure, it's stupid. Sure it's silly. Do movies always need to have deep intellectual meaning? This one has a great message: love conquers terrible obstacles. This is one of the happiest movies I know. It always puts a huge smile on my face. Brendan Fraser is sweet, innocent, and spends much of the movie without a shirt. :) Every female should see this movie whenever she's in a bad mood--it's sure to lift your spirits.
64 A review from Mr. Entertainment Lover
Hee Hee Hee.... What a silly movie! Yes it's dumb and stupid! Still that's what makes it so funny. I have it in my video collection to watch on a day I'm bored. In this film George falls in love with a beautiful women named Ursala. However her nasty mother and her mean boyfriend won't allow it. From then on it's madness and comedy that will keep you laughing. John Cleese does an excellent job as an ape named Ape and Bredon Frasier is good as the bumbling George. This is a movie for the whole family!
65 A great movie
This movie is very entertaining. It is a great friday night family movie! The only part that isnt so good is that george has hardly any vocabulary and it drives you crazylistening to him talk in tottleler language. But in other words it is a very good movie
66 It is so stupid....IT'S FUNNY
How can someone possibly criticize the funniest movie in history? OK... I admit it sure is corny and definitly not for the intellectual group, but hey everyone needs a good laugh...and George sure makes you smile! This movie is unique, how often do you hear an actor arguing with the narrator or see a man fall 10,000 feet into a river and only get a "really big Booboo?" (my favorite line.) This movie, I admit, does not stimulate thought but certainly provides a component we all lack, a sense of humor and a good laugh. Buy this movie for all ages... for all species.* Also, remember to buy the wonderful, spectacular, uplifting, CD...George, George, George of the Jungle...WATCH OUT FOR THAT TREE!!! :)*
67 wonderful
george of the jungle was a great movie . Brendon is hotttt! and funny this a movie for all ages!
68 Pure fun
I'm usually the kind of person who watches adaptations of Jane Austen novels or intense foreign movies, and I wouldn't have gone anywhere near this movie if a friend hadn't insisted. I loved it! I laughed all the way through! It's sweet and goofy and perfect for an evening when you just want to be entertained and not think. Plus it made me want to run out and rent every movie Brendan Fraser's ever made. (Well, maybe not Encino Man.)
69 A shameful production from a now shameless company.
First let me admit that I am old-fashioned. I like the time when scatological humor was considered low-brow, kept to private, sniggering conversations and not trotted out by once honored companies to serve as a model for our youth. While I believe that the sexual aspects of life are best dealt with openly, honestly, I further believe that sexual innuendos belong in movies aimed at more mature audiences and should not be cast out for our preteens to wonder about. In making this movie Disney has plumbed the depths to find the worst inclinations of our youth to generate profit and has abandoned any attempt to promote more civil behavior. The best I can say for this movie is that perhaps the producers couldn't decide who the intended audience was. Beyond that, the visuals were far below current standards, the acting was below par (especially for humor which is very demanding), and the plot a cliche. When Newsday/Kidsday calls it "Hilariously Funny" they demonstrate their level of critical skills and that Siskel and Ebert gave it "Two Thumbs Up" leaves me wondering if they ever saw it. Don't spend a cent on this one. There are a plethora of truly fine children's movies -- this isn't one of them!
70 What a Pathetic Film!
This film was a total waste of time. I almost walked out of the movie theater since the film seemed to go on forever. The humor, if you can call it that, was hard to endure. Brendan Fraser was ridiculous, he has NO acting ability. Good looks can not compensate for intelligence. The rest of the cast only made things worse. Don't waste your time or money on this video- it's dreadful!
71 OK I know it's Disney, can't be good right, WRONG!
Oh man this movie was so funny, I mean I have an obsession for Monkeys so I just fell in love but so did everyone else who I watched it with. You can't even tell Disney made this, It's just pure comedy through and through and if you think "I'm too grown up to watch Disney" You're missing one of the best comedy's out there!
72 Hilariously Funny! A 5 Star Movie!!
George(Brendan Fraser) is a hilariously funny charecter with a big heart. When he falls in love with Ursula(Leslie Mann)hilarious mishaps happen!A 5 star movie that'll have you rolling on the floor!!!
73 BRENDAN the BEAUTIFUL!!!
I absolutely loved this movie 1 of my all time favorites it is a movie for the whole family. (Not to mention the Beautiful Brendan)I would definitely recommend this and many more Fraser movies.
74 Excellent family movie - where's the widescreen?
This is an excellent family movie for all ages. It's funny and not really violent. It only has a couple of "adult" humor related scenes. One where George says he's "having a special feeling right now" while watching Ursula sleep. The other when Ursula and her girl friend see George getting out of the shower (you don't see anything) and they remark on "now I see why he's 'king of the jungle'".
As far as the DVD is concerned. I've seen it in this format AND laserdisc and the picture quality and sound are similar. I am very confused, however, why it's not in widescreen format. This fact alone prevents me from giving it a 5 star rating.
75 HILARIOUS!!!!
This movie was the best!Itwas so funny. No matter how many times you watch it you cant help but laugh. The narrator is even funny. This is deffinently one of my favorite Disney films.Id go buy it now.
76 Quirky physical humor that grows on you
This is one of those really funny movies that I find myself watching again and again. Sure it's unsophisticated physical comedy, but c'mon! Check yer brain at the door and enjoy! Plus, the DVD transfer looks fantastic, and the sound mastering was well done. The only thing that it's missing is WideScreen format (it's 4:3, like most "kid" movies). An excellent comedy choice!
77 Walt Disney's " George of the Jungle"
Absolutely smashing! The romance-comedy movie was excellent, a sure joy for the entire family.
78 URSULA WAS WONDERFUL!
The performance by Leslie Mann as URSULA was perfect. URSULA makes buying the video worthwhile.
79 So hilarious, it'll have you rolling in the aisles!!
I LOVE any kind of comedy if it has a really fine guy to stare at throughout it. This one is NO exception. Fraser is absolutely precious as the knock-down King of the Jungle who loves his dog and the ape named Abe. As I watched it in the theater, people kept turning around to look at me. All I could do was smile back and hold my aching sides as tears streamed down my face. I watch it again and again!!!
80 Rolling in the aisle hilarity
A great movie! Stress reducer. I laughed so hard I couldn't breathe, and all the kids in the theater were looking at me as if I were deranged. I loved it!
