1 Much better than many others!!!
Tokyo SOS is a very good godzilla movie, much better than the newest godzilla movie, Godzilla Final Wars. I mean, come on! It's supposed to be a good movie for the big guy's 50th anniversary! Tokyo SOS will always be the one and only godzilla movie that stands out in the way it does--i prefer not to go into detail, I feel lazy--and so will the first godzilla movie that started it all. --This is all for my dad... :/
2 Awesome movie.
I thought this was a really good movie.I enjoyed the fight scenes. If you're thinking about buying this movie then you should! This was a really good movie.
3 Ummm....
A helpful hint to all whose brothers force them to watch this movie: WATCH ALL OF THE OTHER GODZILLA MOVIES FIRST. Between mini singing Mothra girls and Mechagodzilla and the inept Tokyo army dudes, jumping into the Godzilla canon at this point is too confusing. I enjoy the dubbing on this movie, as there is absolutely no attempt to synch the English with the Japanese, it once again provides the highlight of every Godzilla movie I've ever seen.
4 Lame!
I wanted to like this movie and I approached it with an open mind. I realize you have to just suspend reality sometimes and go for the visuals. Unfortunately the first 45 minutes of this movie is tedious as it focuses on two 4" tall girls that appear and warn that Godzilla is coming. The 4" tall girls sing songs and are about as cheesy as you can get. More mind numbing events occur as the story shows more of Mothra and it's larva then Godzilla. I could not even recommend this movie for children to watch, as the will certainly be board to tears and also *SPOILER* there is a graphic scene where the moth gets roasted alive. So no exactly wholesome fun for the kids to watch. Instead of this movie, I would recommend Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla or Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla both of which have not stop action, incredible special effects and more interesting stories.
5 Wow great Godzilla movie, see it now!!!
No other words to say except this is another visually striking epic series in the Godzilla franchise by Toei.
The movie delivers it all, good realistic sets, great special effects, no more is Godzilla just a puppet figure worn by some Japanese man, no now using the latest CGI effects and technology, Godzilla is a lifelike, strong, realistic and superbaly powerful being.
The plot for this movie might turn of some, Godzilla is the villian and he battles Mothra and Mechagodzilla (whose primarily been a bad monster) over Tokyo.
Actually Godzilla for the bulk of the movies kicks their butts, and gives one great moment after another.
The moment in the movie where Mechagodzilla tries to outsmart , Godzilla for example by hiding behind a building blows up in his face, when Godzilla shoots an electric blast destroying the building and penetrating Mechagodzilla.
Wow!!!
One note: One critic said its playing in US shore, not true, the movie has not really seen a large release in the US, as is the case with foreign movies, the US primarily ignores
them , a shame considering this sci fi epic is pretty cool.
Check out the movie.
6 Renewed my Faith!
This is what gave me hope for the Godzilla franchise now ... i saw previews and stuff for Final Wars which i assume is probably better, but in this to no real fan is let down. Now, people, it is a Godzilla movie ... so it's not a huge budget or super CGI blockbuster, but just a movie true fans of the series love. I don't hate any Godzilla movie, being a fan i enjoy then all. My favorite will forever be Godzilla vs. Destoroyah but this has better effects, but so what, i just think Godzilla is bad a$$. But just like the heisei series, Godzilla looks powerful, Mothra looks poetic and beautiful (as they both should) and Mecha-G never looked better. Please take my advice, watch the Heisei series, in my opinion it's the best but this is a great G Movie!
Long live the King!
7 Sayonara Kiryu!
This is one of the best action-filled Godzilla movies! The sound and picture quality of this movie are outstanding. Director Masaaki Tezuka really puts this movie into high gear. It starts out a little slow, but soon enough the action thickens, culminating in the extended battle scene that seems to take up 40% of the story. Concerning the plot, I think it is adequate, not spectacular - but hey, this is a Godzilla movie - which typically focuses on action rather than on plot or character development.
The special effects in this film are very well done! Kudos to the Asada special effects team! I think some of the most memorable (and realistic) action scenes of Godzilla films are found here. The scenes with Kiryu and Godzilla are just breathtaking. The CGI and digital effects are excellent; they increase the realism of the film.
I like Godzilla Tokyo SOS so much more than the first one, Godzilla against Mechagodzilla. For one thing, Tokyo SOS has more action, better SFX and sound, and more monsters. And don't forget, it has the cute fairies that act as Mothra's ambassadors. The redesigned Kiryu in Tokyo SOS looks and acts more like the ultimate weapon against Godzilla.
This movie, IMHO, is almost as good as GMK (Godzilla Mothra King Ghidorah). In addition, Toho has included on the DVD a really fascinating, behind-the-scenes featurette. Arguably, this rare featurette itself is worth the reason to get the DVD. If you haven't seen this film, I'd recommend renting or (better yet) purchasing the DVD. When you do see the film, don't forget that there is a short scene at the end of the credits. I give this film 4 out of 5 stars. Kudos to Masaaki Tezuka and his cast and crew!
8 Not The Best
Let me start by saying i own all the Godzilla movies in one form or another and am not very impressed with this one. High in spirituality and while the action was good it wasnt anything not seen before. Mechagodzilla and Mothra are wearing pretty thin after all these years and its just more of the same. While i know the alien plots have been used and reused in the Godzilla saga, at least a different type of alien is the norm and would have been a help in this outing. Whether true or not ive read where this will be the last Godzilla movie for sometime so while its not the best by far it is one the collector would want. But if you just want some good Godzilla i would recomend any of the four before this one. I really looked forward to this one and am dissapointed.
9 City Stomping Fun
"Godzilla: Tokyo SOS" (released in Japan under the rather cumbersome moniker "Godzilla X Mothra X Mechagodzilla: Tokyo SOS") is one of the best of the recent Godzilla movies. For those of you who don't like all that pesky plot and character development getting in the way of monster carnage - this is your movie. A startlingly long amount of the running time is devoted to a three way melee between Godzilla, Mothra, and Mechagodzilla, and it's some of the best monster action Toho has ever filmed. What little human plot there is is made a bit more interesting than usual by the presence of Hiroshi Koizumo, reprising his role from the original "Mothra."
The DVD from Columbia doesn't look as good as it should considering that this is a 2003 movie. There are scenes, particularly near the beginning, of very heavy grain, and there are some truly grotesque moments of edge-enhancement. Purists will be happy to know that subtitled Japanese audio is available as well as the English track. Unlike most of Columbia's Godzilla DVDs, there is a rather substantial extra - a Toho-produced 20-minutes behind-the-scenes documentary about the special effects. It's pretty interesting, but definately not for casual fans. Also included are some random trailers, including the Japanese teaser for "Godzilla: Tokyo SOS."
10 Not too shabby
I recieved this film for christmas and I have to say that I was impressed with the special effects. When watching a Godzilla film, one doesn't come to expect a certian technical prowess when it comes to CG work. However, while not ILM quality, the effects here more than get the job done. The opening Jet sequense is particularly stunning, and proabably compromises some of the best CG work in any Godzilla movie. Period. And of course, Godzilla is still a man in a rubber suit, and I must say, he looks better than ever. The movies actng is a bit cheesy and never lives up to the films powerfull score. But this is to be expected. I really dont understand how someone like Roger Ebert can give a Godzilla movie a poor rating because of the effects work. It amazes me how he completly misses the point of these movies. I must say that I was a bit confused by the plot (despite it bieng used more than once in past films) but this is proabably due to the fact that I never saw Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla --this movies prequel. The action is great, the effects spectacular, and the dvd offers the origional Japanese soundtrack. What more can a Godzilla fan ask? Buy it today.
11 Nicely Done but Still a Rehash...
The difference between then and now in these films can be summed up in one word..."writing". The originators of this soap opera featuring a giant lizard (what else can you call it after 50 years and 30-40 films?) simply wrote better stories, and too often in the 90's and 2000 series, classic set-pieces from the 60's films are just re-worked into a different story and setting. This one uses the final epic battle from 1965's Godzilla vs Mothera as its basis. Been there, done that - literally (like 50X). No surprises here.
Also, the modern (2000 to 2005) G era simply featured Mothra and Mechagodzilla in too many films. Fans, young and old, of the series were almost begging to include a new or updated favorite Kaiju.
On the plus side, this film had some of the best effects work in the series - the japanese are really improving their CGI skills, so watch out ILM. And it had some truly excellent miniture city sets. The cityhall building was beautifully made, and I literally, hated seeing the monsters demolish it. Grown Mothra, thanks to some very good CGI, is actually somewhat believable. Larva Mothra looks about the same as it did in the 60s... ridiculous and at the same time very cool. Since it's a machine, Mecha-G was always among the more realistic Kaiju but they're bulking him up with so much weapontry in the latest iteration it is basically imobile and a bit silly looking.
The plot is really nicely handled. I never got bored, and actually enjoyed the non-monster scenes, which is a problem in many of these films, and also something Honda and his editors handled better than their modern counterparts.
The music is understated and appropriate - certainly among the better non-Ifukube scores since Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster. Though there's no memorable melodies, it's subtle, supports the story nicely, and is actually refreshing change of pace over the bombastic well-worn traditional themes.
This is one of the better executed modern G flicks all in all but it borrows too much from earlier films and essentially is a rehash. One tires of Toho using the same few monsters in their stable over and over again. And, the same themes, plot elements, and even set-pieces are just given face-lifts. The latest films in the series, like this one, have been executed just fine. But this series needs some new creative blood, badly. This issue of Toho's "Godzilla Projects" doesn't lie in their execution. It's in the concept phase.
12 THE SAME OLD STORY
I just watched this movie and was looking forward to it. Why, because I'm a fan of the classic Japanese movies. I would not tell anyone not to buy this movie, but be aware there isn't any real reason to do so. It starts off with a interesting link to the first Mothra movie, which would be great if this were a Mothra movie. There is a touching part with Mothra and the new births, which would be fine if this were again a Mothra movie. Sadly it's a Godzilla movie, and again there isn't much of a story here. Aside from the two points mentioned, you have seen everything in this movie before, many times. It doesn't make any more sense then it ever did. Big fight, ruin a city, weak story tailored it seems to kids rather then a serious attempt to be noticed. Someday these directors will get it. Maybe someday Godzilla fans will demand a movie that remembers were it all started. If this is all they can come up with, why not have Ultraman vs Godzilla. They have something in common, the same old story everytime.
13 LET THIS BE, THE FINAL BATTLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got this DVD as an early Christmas gift, it is quite an enjoyable film. I don't know why Kiryu was referred to as Mechagodzilla through the whole movie, when in the first one they called him Kiryu 99.9% of the time. Well the plot is pretty good but to preachy at times, and there are moments when you wish that everyone would just shut up so you can see the big boys going at it. However this movie as many others say is just to set up the epic final battle between Kiryu and the Big G. They threw Mothra into the mix to make it more exciting.
WARNING SPOILERS:
The movie starts out with the cosmos(annoying midget Mothra girls)warning this guy from the original Mothra movie that the bones of the original Godzilla must be returned to the sea because the dead should not be disturbed. The man(sorry I forgot his name)goes to the prime minister to warns him that Mothra will declare war on mankind unless the request is not anwsered. The prime minister says that Mothra destroyed Tokyo 43 years ago and says Kiryu is their only defense. Later on through the movie it's everyone discussing the situation, until a giant sea turtle(Kameobas)washes up on shore with huge claws marks in it's neck, and everyone knows that it's killer can only be Godzilla. Kiryu in the mean time is under heavy repairs after the whoopin Godzilla gave him in the first movie. That guy(from first mothra movie)still argues that Mothra will come and fight in Kiryu's stead. He is still scoffed at. Then the mighty Godzilla rises from the sea, the military is as always helpless against him. Godzilla comes ashore and begins wrecking havoc(GO BIG G),meanwhile that guy from the first Mothra movie(going to be reffered to as MOTHRA GUY for the rest of this review)goes looking for his grandson who has dissapered, and soon finds him laying out the Mothra symbol with desks from a nearby building. The sybol attracts Mothra who goes to battle Godzilla. They fight a fierce battle, but Godzilla quickly begins making short work of Mothra(FYI I don't like Mothra), The prime minister soon decides to launch Kiryu to assist Mothra in combat. Meanwhile on Infant Island(Mothras home) her egg hatches and to Mothra Larva are born, they quickly head to Tokyo to assist their mother. Kiryu soon arrives on the battle field and begin fighting a fierce battle. Godzilla charges the massive machine but Kiryu flips Godzilla over his shoulder, the pilots think the big guy is out cold and approach him. Godzilla now undoubtedly burning with rage lashes out with his powerful tail knocking Kiryu clear off his feet and tumnling down towards him, Godzilla quickly turns over and lets loose his mighty breath blasting Kiryu right in the face and slamming back, knocking him out cold.
Well to make a long story short the Mothra larva arrive and Mothra gets blasted to oblivion, the continue a long battle, Godzilla is eventually stunned and wrapped in silk by the larva and carried off to sea by Kiryu and they desend into the japenese trench. However if you wait half way through the credits you'll hear the mighty roar of Godzilla indicating he is still very much alive.
You will leave this movie very pleased I believe even though I was a little upset by the ending. I still believe people will be arguing over if Godzilla was defeated. Personally I think Godzilla is the mightiest being of all Kaiju and was the true victor, although he was flown away from Japan he survived while Kiryu did not, I think Godzilla was the victor, and to me he will always be the victor to me and I really think he was the victor.
In conclusion this is a great movie with great affects and I apologize for this long review, the major complaint I have about Kiryu is he doesn't have as much personality as he did in the first one. I give this roughly five stars.
14 Godzilla : Tokyo SOS - Not too bad.
Kaiju Eiga fans are in for a treat with this, the 2nd to last entry in the Godzilla series. The movie itself is a direct link to two of Toho's previous creations (Godzilla x Mechagodzilla, and Mothra). So there's quite a bit of story interwined from all three of these movies...
The best part of the film would have to be the monster battles, Mothra never looked better, and Kiryu (Mechagodzilla) is also a nice addition to the mix. Although, I for one, am getting tired of the Kiryu's appearances, and I'm glad that the robot doesn't appear in "Godzilla : Final Wars" (the big guys final film).
The down side would have to be, well, a few things in all honesty. One, Kiryu is never called by it's true name once through out the film... When it is repeated over and over again. Instead, the subtitles read either "Mecha G" or "Mechagodzilla".
I'd also have to say that I like the original title of "Godzilla x Mothra x Mechagodzilla : Tokyo SOS" 100% better then the title that the DVD is going by.
But all in all "Godzilla : Tokyo SOS" is a great entry, and shouldn't be missed by anyone.
BTW - "Godzilla : Final Wars" is already out in the Monster King's homeland and all in all it's doing okay... Though, there are many mixed reactions to Goji's final film here in the States.
Only time will tell.
15 One of the best (Top 5 of all G films)
This has to be one of the best in the series. After being bored with the last MechaGodzilla film, I was pleasently surprised with this one. If the series would have ended after this film, it would have been a fitting ending. Hopfully Final Wars won't disappoint. If your A Godzilla film fan. Don't delay BUY this film.
16 GODZILLA SOS DISSAPOINTS!
Godzilla SOS is a dissapointment in my view. Yes the special affects were great compared to the other Godzilla movies but a lot did lack here. The number one thing that made me give this feeling was the lack of a good story. Im sick of TOHO retooling there KAIJU to take on different roles. Im sorry but growing up MECHAGODZILLA was a bad guy and thats that. If they had done a better job introducing mechagodzilla maybe I wouldnt feel as bad for it. Or why not just make another robot totally new.
17 Godzilla Still King of All Monsters
Despite being a little slow in the middle, this Zilla outing is still fun. The big G does battle again with Mothra (in both Larva and Adult stages) and MechaGodzilla, the bionic cyborg made from the original (as in 1954) Godzilla's bones. Lots of technical mombo-jumbo, bur plausable. The battle scenes are great. Look for those "wonder twins" who are the guardian of Mothra, and of course their cool Mothra song. That's precious.
This is supposed to be the last in the "Millenium" series, but they are working on another Big G adventure. It is rumored to be the last one for 3-10 years. Lets hope not. I enjoy these adventures and would like to see them on the big screen. This is a definate plus to any collection!
18 Big Improvement
Huge improvement over Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, which seemed like the same old crap. This one, which is a direct sequel, has more action, a better storyline (though not perfect), and very good special effects. Its the 2nd best G movie of the Millenieum Series behind GMK: All Out Monster Attack. Get the DVD
19 A Godzilla movie that is simply awesome
I got the movie today(will not say from where because I got it early).I watched the movie right when I got home. It is my 3rd favorite millineum series movie behind G Against MechaGodzilla, and GMK. As far as people saying it is the best Special Effects G movie I dont know it seemed just as good as GxMG and GMK. The movie itsefl was awesome. The battle scenes where off the chain. The battle last about an hour. It's a 10/10 Godzilla movie and I definately recommend it if your a die hard G fan. And it could also be a great Christmas present for kids who like Dinosaurs.
20 Wonderful Big G movie
This is a great film. The special effects, acting, and music are all great. I Highly reccomend.
21 Love this film!
I can't wait for the DVD, but this movie is great! Sure the human interaction wasn't great, but still, the fights, the music, and even the SFX worked! That's enough to make it a five star rating!
The fights were pretty amazing! Even the final battle
The SFX were WAY better than GMK. Mothra never looked realistic!
The musice was awesome. Kudos to Oshima for the wonderful score!
Even the ending, while sad, was beautiful.
So I DEFINATELY recommend this to any Godzilla fans. Most will find it wonderful, while some will find it pointless.
Me? Well, this is definately five stars! If your looking for a Godzilla movie that has great SFX, this is the one!
Congrats to Tezuka for directing this wonderful film. And again, I can't wait to pick this up, as it will feature a REAL bonus feature!
22 Near Great Godzilla
This movie would have warrented 5 stars if it had not been for the poor characterizations and re-hashed script. The recent Godzilla movies are guilty of not thinking "out of the box" and seem to re-introduce the same themes film after film. Yet, in spite of these drawbacks Tokyo SOS is a good film with the best SFX to date. Godzilla fans will be satisfied, and new Godzilla viewers should watch "Godzilla against MechaGodzilla" before watching this one. I am eagerly awaiting "Godzilla Final Wars" the latest and last installment in the 50 year Godzilla saga.
23 It's a Monster Mash with no point to it....
Yes, I saw this movie when it was released in japan and boy does it stink. There are two robot monsters in it including Mechagodzilla. There is Mothra and then there is Godzilla. Is Godzilla a hero this time? Sort of. Mechagodzilla goes nuts and the Big G does take him out,but Godzilla does do a lot of city destroying in this one and Mothra kind of puts a stop to it, although the movie ends with the two beasts kind of parting as friends. a far disapointng movie and not as good as Destroy All Monsters (The Greatest Godzilla movie ever made).
24 KNOW YOUR GODZILLA 101: FIRST LESSON
This is the most recent GODZILLA movie to reach US shores and it was an unusually fast trip. In recent years fans have had to wait as long as
six years for a Godzilla film to make it here. For the uninitiated or new and younger fans of Godzilla here is a listing of all the Godzilla projects
in their most current US video titles. There are many spin-off movies such as RODAN, MOTHRA etc. But I have only included the films in which Godzilla himself appears. The spin-off films are listed at the end. The films with the * next to them are true sequels and pick up where the previous films leave off.
First we have the original classic and its sequel. Both were in black & white and fullscreen. They were released in 1954 & 1955 :
#1 GODZILLA (JAPANESE VERSION currently in US theatres)
GODZILLA- KING OF THE MONSTERS (american version)
#2 GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN (aka GIGANTIS- THE FIRE MONSTER)*
The first series (in color/cinemascope) really starts here. It ran from 1962-69. Most had decent effects budgets and were dubbed very well, either in Japan or in the States:
#3 KING KONG VS. GODZILLA*
#4 GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA (aka GODZILLA VS. THE THING)
#5 GHIDRAH- THE THREE HEADED MONSTER*
#6 GODZILLA VS. MONSTER ZERO (aka MONSTER ZERO)
#7 GODZILLA VS. THE SEA MONSTER (aka EBIRAH- HORROR OF
THE DEEP)
#8 SON OF GODZILLA
#9 DESTROY ALL MONSTERS
#10 GODZILLA' S REVENGE
MONSTER ZERO and DESTROY ALL MONSTERS were very science fictiony and had futuristic settings (the late 80s and 90s) This upset the plot continuity of later films (set in the present).
The seventies series starts here, with much smaller budgets and awful dubbing done in Hong Kong. Most are intended for a child audience:
#11 GODZILLA VS. HEDORAH (aka GODZILLA VS. THE SMOG
MONSTER)
#12 GODZILLA VS. GIGAN (aka GODZILLA ON MONSTER ISLAND)
#13 GODZILLA VS. MEGALON*
#14 GODZILLA VS. MECHAGODZILLA (aka GODZILLA VS. COSMIC
MONSTER)
#15 TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA (aka TERROR OF GODZILLA)*
The eighties/nineties films start here. They are in a rectangular widescreen but not the real wide cinemascope like the first series. The plots are connected, each picking up whwere the last left off:
#16 GODZILLA 1985*
#17 GODZILLA VS. BIOLLANTE*
#18 GODZILLA VS. KING GHIDORAH*
#19 GODZILLA AND MOTHRA- THE BATTLE FOR EARTH*
#20 GODZILLA VS. MECHAGODZILLA 2*
#21 GODZILLA VS. SPACE GODZILLA*
#22 GODZILLA VS. DESTOROYAH*
Next is the "Millenium" series. It was shot in the same widescreen as the first series:
#23 GODZILLA (1998)
#24 GODZILLA 2000
#25 GODZILLA VS. MEGAGUIRAS
#26 GODZILLA, MOTHRA AND KING GHIDORAH: GIANT MONSTERS
ALL OUT ATTACK
#27 GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA
#28 GODZILLA- TOKYO S.O.S.*
#29 GODZILLA- FINAL WARS
In addition Godzilla also appeared in the live action japanese
TV series REISEI NINGEN ZON (aka ZONE FIGHTER (1973). in
the animated Hanna Barbera produced show GODZILLA (aka THE
GODZILLA POWER HOUR or GODZILLA SUPER 90(1978) and the
animated GODZILLA: THE SERIES (1998).
Many of Godzilla's films were reedited for American theatres. Most are shorter than the Japanese versions (only GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA is longer in the US) and some have scenes with American actors (like the late great Raymond Burr) added. Of the films currently available on video, the ones most different from the Japanese versions are GODZILLA-KING OF THE MONSTERS, GIGANTIS- THE FIRE MONSTER (don't even call him Godzilla in this one), KING KONG VS. GODZILLA, GHIDRAH- THE THREE HEADED MONSTER, TERROR OF GODZILLA and GODZILLA 1985. The rest are pretty much the same as the Japanese versions.
Contrary to rumours going as far back as the 60s; KING KONG VS. GODZILLA has ONLY ONE ENDING. It is the SAME in both the Japanese and US versions. I won't spoil it and tell you who wins but.......
Both monsters went on to make alot more movies, so do the math.
Just a thought: In GIGANTIS- THE FIRE MONSTER, Godzilla is the monster, but he is not called that. In GODZILLA (1998) The monster is not Godzilla, but he is called that. Go figure.
Here are the Toho films that either spun-off or were later connected to
the Godzilla series. (They are in no particular order.)
1) Half Human: Story of the Abominable Snowman
2) The Mysterians
3) Rodan (The Flying Monster)
4) Battle in Outer Space
5) Varan- The Unbelievable
6) The H- Man
7) Mothra (The Monster God)
8) Atragon (The Flying Supersub)
9) Frankenstein Conquers the World
10) War of the Gargantuas
11) King Kong Escapes
12) Yog- Monster From Space
13) DaiGoro vs. Goliath
14) Rebirth of Mothra
15) Rebirth of Mothra 2
16) Rebirth of Mothra 3
17) Gorath
18) Matango- Attack of the Mushroom People
19) The Human Vapor
20)Dagorah the Space Monster (aka Dogorah)
25 I Cant Wait To See This Movie
If This Movie Is Gonna Be Better Then Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 3 then Oh Man This Will Knock Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla 3 Away
26 Another Strong Outing in the Godzilla Series
This is the fifth Godzilla movie from the Millennium Series (begun with Godzilla 2000) and the first direct sequel from the series. In that regard, it would help greatly if you saw Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and are familiar with it as Tokyo S.O.S. assumes you already know the groundwork. If you liked Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, chances are you are going to like this one as well. Picking up directly where its predecessor left off, the battle ensues again, this time with three versions of Mothra in the mix... the moth and two newborn caterpillars! The flashbacks to the orginal Mothra movie are a lot of fun too. Overall, the action and special effects, as is always the case with the modern Godzillas, are quite good. The story, while somewhat slim, does have some interesting twists too.
From what I understand, the next movie will be called Final Wars and will feature 10 monsters! Promos for this movie (that opens in Japan in December of 2004) claim this one is "the end." Of course, such was supposedly the case with Godzilla vs. Destoroyah from the Hesei Series, so after a hiatus of a number of years, Godzilla will probably be back again. Until then, a high-budget Destroy All Monsters for the new millennium will certainly be something to look forward to.
27 Godzilla, Mothra, Mechagodzilla: Tokyo SOS
That is the full title of the latest (almost) installment in the Big G's Millenium Series. If you have seen the prior film, Godzilla X MechaGodzilla, then you have basically seen this film, except for one small detail...Mothra. That's right, the magic and mysticism of the Mothra legacy is brought back into the Godzilla series. Infant Island, the Cosmos, and the Mothra Larvae are all here. This is a fun, loud, and well done addition to the Godzilla film legacy. The story and direction is great, the editing and pacing is very tight, the music is great, and the actors are great, including Hiroshi Koizumi, a veteran of many early Godzilla films. Godzilla fans will have a great time.
28 There goes Tokyo! Hooray!
This summer, I attended the Chicago premiere of the latest Godzilla movie: Tokyo SOS! We got there around 9:15 and got in line. Lucky for us, the big crowd arrived after we did, so we got good seats. We waited for half an hour, and then the crowd, apparently knowing that the movie would start soon, started chanting ?gSOS! SOS!?h Then J.D. Lees, the head of the whole G-Fest thing and publisher of G-Fan, came up and made a short speech about how it was so great that people were getting popcorn after the movie was supposed to start, and that it would begin in five minutes. We waited another five minutes, and then?c the TOHO logo! Plastered up on the screen with all it?fs glory! At that point, the crowd went nuts. Of course, being the civilized person that I am, so did I. The movie started off with a shot of Mechagodzilla (or Kiryu, if you prefer) in the repair dock, with all the chords and metal thingies sticking out of him. Then, it immediately switches to a scene of two fighter planed tracking an unidentified object through a thick cloud cover. They try to shoot it down, but they just end up missing. One of the planes takes a picture of it. Back at base, they focus the picture, revealing a familiar shape. ?gOh, no! It?fs?c?h The word ?gMothra?h flies onto the screen, followed by ?gKiryu?h and ?gGodzilla?h. Then, the screen blows up in a fiery explosion, revealing the title of the movie. In my opinion, this scene is right up there with Star Wars and the original Godzilla as one of the best opening title sequences in movie history.
They really don?ft mess around with sub-plots and characters in this movie. After you get past the first fifteen minutes of plot development (who needs that?!), it's pretty much just one long, spectacular battle until the credits roll. The battle was probably one of the greatest in Godzilla movie history. At some points in the battle, you just want to stand up and cheer (which is what everybody did). For example, in one part, Godzilla and Kiryu are standing on opposite sides of a building. Kiryu fires a storm of missle around the building at Godzilla, who doesn?ft even seem to be bothered the explosive impacts. He then fires his heat ray through the building at Kiryu. Godzilla then runs at Kiryu, who grabs him by the tail, swinging him over his head and into a nearby building. Godzilla, now undoubtably pissed off, blasts Kiryu in the face with his heat ray, knocking him out cold. Wow.
This movie successfully combined the ?e70?fs fun with the ?e90?fs ray-shooting slug-fests to create the ultimate Godzilla movie. While the original will remain the best movie ever made, Tokyo SOS has totally exceeded my expectations. It?fs now definitely one of my all-time favorite movies! Where can you get a dramatic storyline, non-stop action, and the coolest monsters ever? One word. Godzilla.
29 finally!
this the sequel to godzilla vs mechagodzilla is from what ive heard not the best godzilla but not the worst. what raises this to five stars is that it will be widescreen with original japanese and subtitles and incredibly it will apparently have a behind the scenes feature produced by toho! this is a major improvement over all other dvds. and it seems that sony is trying to actually make godzilla fans happy the dvds are getting better and better and they are finally getting some old movies along with the new. bravo sony and keep getting the old movies.
