1 terrible service
My wife and I wasted hours and hours trying to get HP service. HP has outsourced customer service to several developing countries, and each time we called, the representatives were unable to locate the record of our previous call. We were told time and again that we would be contacted by a "case manager" but that never happened. After weeks of trying, it became obvious that we need to discard the product (still under warrantee) and buy a new (non-HP) product ourselves.
2 Paper Feed
I can echo the comments re the paper feed. I've been using the 450 since December 2004, and it worked great at first. Especially pleasing was the wireless bluetooth connection to my iPAQ. But, as others have indicated there is a problem with paper jams and feed in general. Sometimes it thinks it's out of paper when there are 4-5 sheets still in the tray. Lately, even though I've cleaned the cartridges, it has been dropping large ink blotches on the print-outs that I can get to feed. Frustrating! Had real possibilities...
3 PAPER WON'T FEED
I have now owned 2 of these printers and I thought they were very good at first. However, after a couple of months I started experiencing paper feed problems. The printer just won't grab the paper. You have to try all sorts of paper amounts in the feeder before you come up with a proper thickness where it grabs. My patience has run out on this second printer and I will go back to the Canon.
4 very portable, sturdy & reliable
I'm not sure why some other folks have had trouble with this printer - I have never had a single glitch & I have put it to the test. I travel a TON & take my laptop & printer with me almost every trip - the HP 450ci has withstood the wear & tear of over 50,000 of travel (air, car & train) in the past 9 months & aside from a few scratches here & there you'd never know it wasn't fresh out of the box.
I also have used my HP 450ci to print almost anything you can think of - text docs on regular mid-weight paper ("new" or recycled, both work fine), 8.5x11 photo paper, 4x6 photo paper, transparencies, labels, even t-shirt iron-on transfer sheets - not a single problem. Hope I didn't just jinx myself! :)
Seriously though - if you're looking for a portable printer that's rugged enough to really travel, but also looks slick sitting on your desk or pulling it out of your bag in a client's office , the HP 450ci is THE way to go. IMHO. And no, I don't work for HP! I actually am not a big fan & have NOT liked some of their other products, but the 450ci hasn't let me down.
5 excellent portable or desktop printer
If you need a portable printer this is a great choice. It is well-built & solid without being too heavy to take with you. At the same time, it's versatile enough to be your everyday desktop printer too. I have tried a number of the "portable" printers that are available and so far the HP450ci looks the best, is built the best, and has lasted the longest even with a lot of use. In summary: It's well-built, light weight and the print quality for text & pictures is good.
6 Pretty but very disappointing
My wife gave me a HP Deskjet 450CI for XMAS 2002 as I was travelling a lot and it seemed a decent solid printer that was compact if a little expensive. I was looking for a basic printer that could do most basic printing in a compact form. I was not looking for awesome performance in any aspect.
The good: Printer prints decently and quickly. Printer is pleasing in shape and compact.
The bad: Printer does not handle cardstock (fairly common deficiency here) or full size photo paper.
The ugly: Printer suffers NUMEROUS jams (to the point of being unuseable) - paper is pulled in approx an inch, jams, then software comms problems begin. I have seen the problem discussed in a number of online forums. This apparently is a design problem relating to the pinch plate which may have been corrected in printers made after July 2003. If you are in warranty, HP will fix the problem but if you are like me and the problem occurs after the warranty expires fixing this design defect is on you.
Bottom line: Before buying: 1. Make the seller take the printer out of the box so you can check the production date (only located on the serial tag on the bottom of the printer) (how many vendors will do this?). 2. Verify that "no kidding" this design defect has been corrected.
Postscript: I have been highly satisfied with every HP printer I have had until this one. This printer has not yet gone through a single complete ink cartridge and has never run card stock or photo paper. I do not want to deal with repairs so today I scavenged the ink from this one - threw away the 450CI - and installed the ink in my new HP PSC1350. The jury is out on the PSC1350 for now.
7 Love this printer...
This printer works great, excellent HP quality with complete mobility. The resolution of the printouts, B/W and color are fabulous. We haven't tried photo paper yet, but so far it is versatile in printing with different media.
8 Road Warriors Listen Up!
This printer has possibilities! It has completed 6 airplane trips checked as luggage and worked the first time every time. Although those trips only represent 2 months, its a better record than the BJC-85 or the HP-350 I owned (see my Amazon reviews). Dazzling print speed for a portable, really nice print quality and regular size ink catridges.
Thanks HP!
LONG TERM UPDATE:
Well, as it turns out, my short term enthusiam and 5 star rating for this printer has been dashed by on going problems -- primarily paper jams. I now own two of these printers, one I use while the other is being repaired under warranty (I bought an extended warranty). Losing confidence in HP, my G85xi all-in-one just quit also (won't feed paper). Repair costs as much as a new all-in-one.
9 Just what I was looking for .....
Really thrilled with this product ....I'd used both the Canon BJC 55 & 85 before and been constantly frustrated. The HP is much more 'solid', great design, yet small and compact. Best of all the print quality is superb - much higher res than the other models on the market, and the colours come out looking great. Sheet feeding is good ....no 'catcher'so you have to give it enough space. But overall, for those with limited space, who want the option to travel, but who want to produce good looking results - its a great buy.
10 Nice Printer
If you need a portable printer this is a great choice. It's very light weight and the picture quality is good. You can print different size photos, print on transparencies (which I have not tired) and print watermarks. My only complaint is that the power adaptor and power cord do not stay together. If I move the cords or bump into them they often come apart. I'm not sure if this is a problem for this model or it's just my printer. I'm looking into it.
