HP No. 78 tri-color Inkjet print cartridges feature a precise combination of design and a specially formulated ink system that contributes to world-class image quality, print speed, and reliability. The cartridge has an integrated print head and ink supply ensuring a fresh print head every time the ink is replaced. Precise, micro-fine ink drops produce outstanding print quality. HP No. 78 cartridges provide ultimate photo quality with HP's enhanced color layering technology from PhotoREt III for smooth color transitions and realistic flesh tones. Specially formulated, dye-based ink creates bright, vivid colors, and photo images resist fading longer.
1 Cost of Ink
I have had printers since 1996 and still cannot believe the mark up on these cartridges. At these prices, one could just buy a new printer after 2 refill expenses. A new printer comes with the small cartridges yet at the price of the printer complete boxed set, it seems rediculous not to consider just replacing the printer at some point.

I have refilled HP cartridges and refilling them is just fine. The only secret is when to refill the tank. If you wait till the black tank is no longer printing, you've already burnt up the print head so that one would be trash. Refill them when they reach about 20% full and they work fine.

Ink tanks are too pricey in mho. That's why folks are selling refill kits, remanufactured cartridges etc. The reman's should be used right away during any warranty period since the print head could be damaged. If there's an issue, at elast you could return it for a repl or refund etc.

FYI, I went for the Canon Pixma recently since I can now just simply look at the tanks, see the ink level and do as needed. Those tanks are independent of the print head so, easy to refill or simply replace them for about half of the HP's.
2 Please be careful
I found, through experience, that the REMANUFACTUED or REFURBISHED are absolutely worthless. I wasted my money thinking I was going to save.

The color with these REMANUFACTUED or REFURBISHED is horrendous, you would be better off using a crayon.

Quote of the Day:

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has a few things to say on

the subject of towels.
Most importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For
some reason, if a non-hitchhiker discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel
with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a
toothbrush, washcloth, flask, gnat spray, space suit, etc., etc. Furthermore,
the non-hitchhiker will then happily lend the hitchhiker any of these or
a dozen other items that he may have "lost". After all, any man who can
hitch the length and breadth of the Galaxy, struggle against terrible odds,
win through and still know where his towel is, is clearly a man to be
reckoned with.
-- Douglas Adams, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"

We cannot command nature except by obeying her.
