1 Trash
This machine is a constant frustration. Out of the box, the software is buggy and has never worked right. Tech support is poor, and they are able to do little more than parrot the instructions that come with the machine. Constantly jams when sending faxes, freezes up when sending large faxes, and has never successfully scanned an item. I operate a small business and thought this machine would cover several bases at once, but have been constantly disappointed. HP should be ashamed for putting this garbage on the market.
2 Buggy Software
So mom needed help scanning and e-mailing some documents. No problem. Hit the "scan" button on the OfficeJet, and go, right? Wrong. Hitting the button would bring up an HP splash screen on the computer, but it froze there. Lesson learned: the "scan" button on the machine is useless.

Then we went into the "HP Photo # Imaging Gallery" software. It worked for 3 scans, but on the 4th one, it appeared to scan fine, but the document file never showed up in the gallery window.

We tried it with another scanning application, and again it appeared to scan fine, but the software never received the data. No error, nothing.

I tried downloading a "critical update" for the HP software, and it arrived as an executable WinZip file. Unfortunately, it tried to unpack to a directory on C: but the computer in question doesn't have a C: drive, so the WinZip self-extractor said "Drive c is not a valid drive, unzip operation canceled" and exited.

Anyway, I then noticed the link that lets HP analyze your system for needed upgrades, but it found that the driver for the OfficeJet was up-to-date.

My HP Scanjet also 3300C has funny drivers. They don't like it when I disconnect power to the scanner before "disconnecting" the scanner in Windows. I think it used to crash Windows, before I upgraded the drivers. Now it merely complains. But it shouldn't complain at all!

Also, my uncle tried getting the fax part to work, but he hit an unresolvable problem (I don't remember what it was).

At work, we also use a different model of OfficeJet for faxing. That has problems feeding paper, and it just doesn't work as well as the Brother machine that sits beside it.

From now on, I can't recommend any HP device with a scanner, due to the poor quality of the drivers. But to be honest to myself and HP, I still like my Deskjet 970CSE. And the OfficeJet 6110 prints fine, which is why I give this 2 stars instead of 1.
3 Wonderful Multifunction Printer
I pruchased this unit so I could make copies for Sunday School and do light faxing and scanning. I have to use the unit increasingly for scanning documents into my computer.

So far, I have had no problems to report on this unit.
4 Took It Back For A Refund Just In Time
I bought this one because I wanted the flat glass for the copy function. However, it wasn't worth it. This printer tries to do too much, is cheaply made, and has a user-unfriendly menu. The software is full of bugs. You will be spending many hours trying to figure things out and calling India where customer service seems to be located. I was very lucky to get it back to the store within ten days for a full refund. And as you might figure, the store was a pain in the neck and said that they couldn't believe that I was having trouble with this model. Duh!
5 weak
Had this machine for 6 months and hate it. Loud and annoying. Very buggy and difficult overall to manage Waste of money. Next time I'll read these reviews.
6 avoid this model!
I had a 2410 all-in-one at home and since I'd heard 6110 is the more suitable version for office applications, I purchased a 6110 all-in-one for my office. The experience was no different than a disaster.
First of all, the printer wouldn't feed the paper correctly such that all lines were printed at a large angle with the paper! We had to make our own modifications and with trial and error we finally found the proper cardboard thickness to be glued to the edge to improve the situation.
To fax several pages one is given the option to either load originals on the glass or use the ADF (automatic document feeder) feature. Unlike in 2410s where you don't have the ADF feature yet are able to scan several pages from the glass to the printer's memory, then connect and send all pages; on 6110s you cannot scan from the glass to the memory. All you can do with the "glass" option is to first dial, then scan a single page, and then fax that single page. The ADF feature, on the other hand, will not let you fax double-sided papers. The smart ADF doesn't let you add extra papers once it has started feeding them in. This means that you are not even given the chance to load one side of the paper hoping that you'll load the other side once it has been processed by the printer. Believe it or not, this means that to fax a double-sided paper you need to copy one side to a different paper and then fax both pages with the ADF.
The menu is also another awful feature of the printer, which is amazingly user-unfriendly. Unlike on 2410s, you have a hard time selecting your desired option from the menu, since after a few seconds (that is, 1-3 seconds) the sub-menu jumps back to the main menu. Worse is the case when you don't want to select an option and it does it automatically for you. This happens quite often when you're searching through the options and it automatically sets the paper settings to the default without your approval.
As far as I have experienced, the only advantage in 6110 (compared to 2410) is the ADF feature but there are many many problems associated with this model that make it a quite unpleasant experience.
7 Deservedly Discontinued - There Should Be a Recall
The worst HP Printer I have ever owned. Mechanically nice, but what good is that when the software is so poorly written that every print job is an adventure?

You may find that a perfectly routine print job simply stops printing, forcing you to go into the print menu and restart the printer. Or that your grayscale presets have changed to color. (When I complained to HP about this, they said it was a known issue but they had no useful solution.) I have had the printer for about a year at least, have upgraded the software and used it many times -- I see no improvement. It's as buggy as it was on the day I got it.

Do not buy this printer, even used. Do not accept it as a gift either, unless you have endless amounts of free time and don't have anything important to do with your life.
8 Love / Hate Relationship
I love this machine. I have 2 of them, one at work - one at home.

The home one has never scanned properly. It will not scan from the flat bed. It always tries to read from the paper feeder on top. I have a lot of scanning I'd like to do but I'm not putting precious one-of-a-kind photos through a mechanical feeder.

The one at work has always worked wonderfully for my purposes - scanning, color printing & duplication, small job reproduction, and mailing lists. We print on everything from envelopes and vellum transparencies to heavy card stock. But I am the only user and I am aware that it likes gentle treatment. Still, I get a lot of quality work done on it. The color quality is exceptional in my opinion. Considering it only cost us $250, it's definitely a keeper (we're an academic department, higher education level).

To me the 1st flaw with the machine is the touchiness of the delicate technology. The 2nd is that it costs a lot to run if you're going to do a lot of printing. Toner is high (though typical) but cartridge life is low.

I would not do without mine and will buy another one when this one dies if they & their consumables are being sold. I just wish the cost of the toner would come down.

Thank you.
9 Do Not Buy This Printer!
I have had problem after problem with the HP 6110 All-In-One.
It started with the paper jamming and eventually it stopped printing alltogether because it "claims" that its out of paper. Another great example of poorly engineered American electronics. THIS PRINTER IS PATHETIC!
10 Out of warranty - coincidence?
IIs it really a coincidence that so many hp 6110 and 7110 machines fail a few months out of warranty?

I was happy with my 6110 until the 14th month, when it sat down and refused to move. A "warming up " message would come on, and stay on - permanently. this blocked all functions, and any inbound faxes were refused as the machine "thought" it had a power failure. Restarting the machine between 6 and 12 times would free it up until the next time it froze again.

All the remedies suggested on the website were tried (full reset, part reset, plugging it in to the cat) to no avail. The firmware download was useless.

Web help sent a week's worth of useless e-mails and did not seem capable of believing that the machine was really plugged in to the wall, and not a power strip. They washed their hands of me without answering any question directly and then supplied two consecutive invalid numbers to call.

I have subsequently learned that the machine is terminally defective, and is not repairable. It seems hp have known about this machine fault for some time. This is apparently due to a sensor which will not detect the scanner bulb correctly and shuts off all functions. The machine has done 4500 pages in 14 months against the hp rating of 3000 pages per month.

I am surprised that a company of this reputation should be producing sub-standard machinery. Their website is testimony to the trouble that can occur.

If you are going to buy one, say a quiet prayer first. You have a more than outside chance of getting one with a built-in death wish. If you get that far, and need to use support, give yourself a fortnight, and wear soft shoes, because you will end up wanting to kick the dog or any other poor creature within reach.
11 Same as the rest ok till a jam
Worked ok till fax feeder jamed. 1 week trying to fix it will probably give up on it.
12 The Quick-Buck Banditos strike again
This thing is OK when it works, but like all the other items offered by the mega-conglomerated PC devices and systems giants, it is obviously a shining example of how marketing triumphs over all corner-cutting and lack of support. I have just about had it with the likes of Compaq, HP, and of course Ledd. Er, I mean Dell. The "sell em and leave em" attitude is just too much for me to bear anymore. This machine is just that. Like other HP computer products and systems I have known over the last several years, it has so many corners cut that it is nearly round. I suppose the price reflects this, but people should see that mainly you still get what you pay for. A PC for $299 is not a powerful workstation, and an All in One printer/scanner/fax for under $200 here is not a professional office quality machine, either.
13 Decent Machine; Absurd "Service"
I got this machine in February, '04, and registered it at the HP web site. I just called HP about maybe getting an extended warranty...They told me their records showed I got the machine in 2002. This machine was not even in existence in 2002! This is typical of HP. Another time I purchased a PC and an extended warranty from them. Later, when I called them to use the warranty, they could not find any record of my having the warranty. (They finally did find it...after some days.)

I own several HP products, and have registered all of them on-line at the HP site. But I just spoke to customer service, and the woman I talked to said her records do not match up at all with the record of my purchases on the HP site. She is showing me as having bought this printer, and a PC, before they were ever made! Also, and get this, she was not even aware that HP had an on-line database of customer registrations, but when I made her aware of it, she would not even recognize my record of registrations that is on it. What is even more crazy, is that HP had two different files on me, with somewhat different registration dates. She told me they might have gotten some info. mixed up with another customer!!??? (But she was not willing to change anything unless I could send her receipts.)

Now my machine keeps telling me I am low on black ink, even after I put in a new cartridge. And the feeder tray falls off if you barely bump it at all. I had the d135--a forerunner of this machine--for about a year, and then it just stopped printing. (It was just barely out of warranty.) Fortunately, this machine prints and faxes okay, so far, but I have not had it for quite a year yet...

Warning: If you deal with HP, save all receipts and other relevant data; their record keeping is insane!

14 Great product...for a little over 1 year
Same as many other reviews. This all-in-one worked great until one day the dreaded "carrier jam" appeared. Seems that many owners experience this total melt down with this printer.

It should be called an all-OR-NONE, since it will not print, scan, fax or copy.
15 usual hp quality
Only had this a day, and I'm no expert, but this seems to have the usual quality and ease-of-use that HP delivers. So far, so good. My only quibble was that there didn't seem to be a (necessary) USB cable included in the box. I had a spare, so I ended my evening happily enough...
16 Carriage Jam Error
I bought my HP 6110 about 18 months ago. It has always been a noisy printer, and the ADF never worked that well. Recently there has been lots of carriage noise, and now a "carriage jam" error shows up. I've checked it out several times, no jam I can see. Back to CompUSA for an exchange tomorrow under my 2 year extended warranty. I'll be selecting another printer, not the 6110, but I haven't figured out which yet. It will be a Canon or Epson, hope I make the right choice.
17 Great... For a little while
I bought the 6110xi about a year ago. Originally, it worked fine, a couple paper jams here and there, but decent overall. The print quality is good as is the scan quality. And thats about the end of the good news. Lots of big problems after that. First, if you get some kind of print error that you cannot fix, you cannot use any of the other functions of the machine, e.g. Faxing, scanning, etc. Why anyone would engineer something like that is riduculous. Paper jams become more frequent, cartridges dont last long and are expensive, lots of faxes jam in the document feeder (wound up faxing two pages and leaving the room only to discover that it jammed and sent 109 blank pages to my recipient). Then finally, after a few months, it gave me a carriage jam error, which was nonexistant, but i couldnt clear the problem. HP told me to take it to a local store and they would send it to them to get fixed. Went to the store and they refused to take it. Called HP and they told me to try again. Took the printer there again, and got the same response again. So now, because of some simple carriage jam error (which, upon reading message boards, seems like many people have had the same problem with HP MFT's) i cant do anything with it. Finally yesterday, after exhausting all avenues of HP support, i became totally frustrated and the printer took a ride down the basement stairs - unaccompanied. Looking for a Canon replacement today.
18 HP is not my choice
I am a long time PC user. I have purchased HP, Cannon and Epson printers. I will never purchase HP or Cannon again having learned my lesson with software and installation of HP and to a lessor degree, Cannon. Epson shines and is always my first choice.

Seems like users need to access support quite frequently with HP products, good luck.
19 Don't Waste Your Time
I bought this printer for small business use. Within three months I had to exchange it (fo the same model). Now, a month later, I am looking for a replacement and a different brand... save yourself the trouble and look somewhere else.
20 hp 6110 is a POS
Dont buy this printer, or anything from hp. Their customer support is horrible, the printer is a POS. Mine didnt even last a year. They told me they dont even have the parts to fix my printer, and they would sell me another one for $260.00. Yeah sure, I will be right there!!!! Not a chance. Look elsewhere.
21 Don't Buy This Machine!
It's been nothing but trouble. It jams constantly. I have to baby sit each page as it comes out!!! The scanning is bad as someone else describes. It's not very compatiable with MACs. I wanted to like HP products, but this has killed that in me. I will NEVER buy HP again. This is just crazy. I'm goning to have to toss it and buy something else.
22 piece of junk! Stay away
Not only the machine did not work from the beginning as well as the 2 replacements they sent me. The first machine had a short and the machine was dead. The second machine the fax did not work, the 3rd there was a stain in the scanning glass of 2 inches in the inside. HP has a terrible support center rude people, they dont care. I am getting my money back! HP stay way! Bad business.

For the 8 months that I owned the machine, the scanning is not precise and it will often scan an area different from the designated.

The printer is slow, the quality is so so.

If you are receiving fax from some older machine it will not receive that is what the costumer support center told me.

Also the scan program is bad. Dont recomment at all.....
23 Incompatibility is breaking my frickin' heart
The scanner is incompatible with Acrobat 6.0. When you try to scan to a PDF from within Acrobat, you are prompted repeatedly to reinstall the printer drivers. If you hit cancel 2 or 3 times, Acrobat then loads and you can scan as needed.

From the reverse side, you can't scan to Acrobat from HP's Director interface.

As a result of these issues, I've had to shelf my brand new copy of Acrobat 6 and acquire a copy of 5. The most frustrating part of this experience is that HP was extremely lacking with support. I went back and forth multiple times between HP and Adobe. I finally reaced a higher-level tech with HP that informed me of the incompatibility. You'd think they would put something in their database to let the lower-level guys know of the issue so they would stop making you jump through hoops: uninstall, reinstall, repeat.

Now, when do we get the updated drivers?

Also, the whole issue with not being able to set scanning preferences is absolutely inexcusable.

Bad drivers. Bad support from India. My money goes elsewhere in the future.
24 Poor Quality Design and Customer Support
I have owned the HP 6110 All-In-One for over a year now and have experienced numerous problems with the product. First the machine has a propensity to "disconnect" from the PC for no reason, forcing a reboot of the PC to reconnect. The HP "Customer Service" people and I use that term loosely indicated that they had never had anyone report this problem. I told the Customer Service Manager that this was an obvious software issue, which he denied was the case. Yet, a few months later there was a software patch on their website to fix this problem. (The patch cut the frequency of this problem somewhat, but did not fix the problem.) Second, the paper handler picks up two pieces of paper frequently when performing double sided printing (which was the primary reason I bought the product in the first place), resulting in pages for a two sided document. Third, the ink cartridges are of small capacity and have to refilled or changed often, which is expensive. The scan and copy functions work satisfactorily, but the printer function is of very poor reliability.
25 Another Reason to Use a Mac!
Good things for smart people! This machine is a compromise, of course, but, all things considered, It's great.I would give it 5 stars, but, it doesn't do all things as well as stand alones. All of you complaining, I see, are using windows. I know the pain... Also, about HP's having "carriage" troubles, that's very simply a cleaning job. The clear tape that runs the length of the carriage, Keep it clean!
Other than that, HP has it all over Epson (stupid dirt and dust collecting paper feed), it's a good professional quality machine, and you can't beat that duplex (print on both sides) option. A no brainer!
I've owned them all, and needed an all around, I'm happy I stuck to HP.
Pete
26 This isn't a bargain....
Hewlett Packard lists the retail price of this printer as $299. Amazon.com, I'm disappointed!
27 Works fine, some follow up comments
I originally reviewed this printer on December 7, 2003. It's now been about six months, so I thought that I would post some follow-up comments.

The old workhorse HP r80xi that we had turned out to be too expensive to repair - there was a main board malfuntion that was going to cost over $250 to fix, so we junked it.

This HP 6110 still works fine. Main drawbacks remain:

1. Noisier than the r80xi (which was already pretty loud)
2. Sometimes slow to print.
3. Ink cartridges are small and low capacity - need much more frequent replacement than r80xi.
4. Paper feeds are not as reliable - occasionally get two pieces or more of paper fed in together - what a mess!.

Some additional things that I have figured out with the 6110 since the last review:

1. Windows XP works great with this printer! Office 2000 Scan function works great! HP printer and scan software that comes with 6110 work just fine also. No problems here.

2. I passed on getting a print server to link this printer to our three home computers at the time of the first review because the scan function would not work with the print server - only the print function would. Since then I have managed to link our three home computers to this printer through a USB semi-auto switch (which I got at trianglecables.com). With this device, each computer has a little software switch that you switch on at your computer to activate the USB line to the 6110. You can print AND scan through this USB switch! The only drawback of this system is that now you have a second set of lines to run beside your ethernet lines. Plus, a USB network works only as long as your computers are not too far apart (the power dissipation of USB lines are only spec'ed out to about 15 feet, although trianglecables.com sells a 20 ft cable that works fine - longer lines have to be joined together in 15-20 foot segments by powered USB hubs to renew the strength of the signal).

3. There is an option in the printer Preferences menu on Windows XP that allows you to print last page first.

4. By using re-manufactured cartridges and searching for the cheapest cartridge prices on the Internet, I've gotten the cost of the cartridges close to what they were with the r80xi.

All in all, I would have never gotten this printer if the r80xi were still alive, but it looks like it's here to stay,

28 HP's legacy of mediocrity continues
I did not buy this printer. I got it for free. I bought a v40 at Sears, and Kudos to Sears for replacing that HP when it developed "carriage stall". I'm quoting HP technical support (I know a lot of people who had a similar problem at about the same time I did). I just needed something that did stand alone faxes for my wife's use, and now that I've experienced HP, I would definitely recommend products by Epson or Canon (which I also own products by). I work in graphics and computer sales, so hopefully my advice will carry some weight. Most disappointing is the fact that HP continues to crank out printers which CANNOT load a piece of paper straight. I'm not even going to go into how bad the software, scanner and technical support from HP are here; this isn't a novel. On the upside: it does print really crisp and clear.
29 Works great... but
This all-in-one works better than the Brother MFC 5200c. The Brother unit had several problems that we could not overlook and had to return it within 1 week. After much research, the HP OfficeJet 6110 seems to be the winner. We had this unit up and running in no time. The software is large and took longer than average to install. The fax function works great, and everything seem to work as advertised... Until we started to print takeout menus for the restaurant. For longest time I could not figure out why it always cuts off the buttom 0.5 inch on a 8.5 x 14 paper! As it turns out, the printer's margin is set at 0.46 inch! This just doesn't seem logical to me, if you can print borderless photos on this printer, why limit the margin to do any less? To me it is artificially set in the firmware to limit the capability. I do not want to buy another printer just to print another 1/4 inch on the buttom of the page. This is too bad because I would have give it 5 stars if I could figure out a way to decreas the margin at the buttom of the page.
30 Good, but liked Lexmark's X6170 a little better
I did a lot of research on these all-in-ones, and my top two choices were this HP OfficeJet 6110, and Lexmark's X6170. I owned both for two weeks and as a result have a very good sense of their strengths and weaknesses.

First of all, these machines are highly comparable, in terms of print speed/quality, ease of use, size, and set up. Both are stand-alone faxes if desired. However, they each have little features that distinguish them, for better or worse.

HP OfficeJet 6110: Extremely noisy -- makes lots of clunking sounds during printing. Paper trays are conveniently located at the bottom of the unit. However, printed copies come out somewhat curled at the edges. Cannot use fax features from the computer to which it is hooked up (i.e. cannot fax from within Word or other wordprocessor programs -- This was a big disappointment, after using that feature on the Lexmark extensively.) Also cannot fax from another computer on a home network. However, it has a solid design, and a slightly smaller footprint. Has a "power save" mode. Can accommodate an optional 6-colour cartridge for photo printing.

Lexmark X6170: Has the ability to adjust fax transmission baud rate, which came in handy when faxing to older fax machines. Can fax from within applications on the connected computer, and from another computer on a home network. *Much* quieter operation, nicer, more intuitive keypad, with (refreshing) blue lights on the control panel. Also, a more interesting design. The paper trays are less accessible, and use a slide-out extender, which I don't prefer. No power save -- it's always "on". About $50 cheaper than the HP.

Ultimately, for reasons related to problems with static on my phone lines, faxing to certain machines was a problem. Lexmark's customer support was very helpful, but ultimately I had to return it and have kept the HP. Still miss some things about the Lexmark, tho...

31 If you have Mac OS X don't buy this!
Currently (4/12/2004) HP does not support two-sided printing on the 6110 even though the hardware is available for this and it used to work until they updated the OS and the driver. HP tech support is terrible. They are hard to understand and did not know until more than an hour on the phone that the driver wasn't written for double sided printing anymore. Their advice was to wait for the updated driver (still not available though it has been over three months). Most of the features on the panel of the printer will not work in conjunction with the computer, for example the button that would allow you to scan at the printer without going back to your computer each time to tell it to scan to the hard drive. This is a major hassle if you want to scan numerous docs or pictures.
32 Will work very well for most people
After reading reviews and doing some research I found this HP multifunction to be the best for the money. It is a printer, fax, copier and scanner. The many function buttons on the unit makes it easy and quick to use without a computer. You can use all the functions without a computer, except the scanner. The print quality is top-rate. I printed a brochure that contained graphics, pictures and text at medium quality on the HP and the same brochure on my Epson at high quality, and the HP was noticeable better. However, ink on the HP dries much slower than the Epson. So, be careful not to touch the printed page for several seconds until the ink dries.

The installation was simple and easy. The scanner lamp can be set to turn off from 1 to 12 hours saving energy.

One feature I really like is that you can use the HP with an answering machine connected. You simply set the number of rings on the answering machine to a lower number than the HP. Example: set the answer machine to 4 rings and the HP to 6 rings. When you receive an incoming call, the answering machine will come on and play your message. At the same time, the HP will monitor the call, listening for a fax tone. If there is a fax tone, then the HP will receive the incoming fax. If no fax tone is detected, then a voice message can be recorded by your answering machine. If you pick up the phone before the answering machine and hear a fax tone, then just press 1-2-3 on your phone. The HP will take over and receive the fax. You will never miss another voice call or fax again.

Pros:
Replaces a fax, printer, copier, and scanner.
Can use an answering machine.
High quality printing.
Switch out the black ink for a Cyan-Magenta-Yellow cartridge (HP 58) and get amazing color photo prints.

Cons:
Uses up ink quickly.
Average to low quality on scanner.

Bottom line:
The HP 6110 does most everyday jobs very well and I am happy with it thus far.

33 Poor scanning
I wish to write to express my unbelievable disappointment in the scanning ability of the HP Officejet 6110.

The primary reason I purchased this MFC was for the automatic document feeder to automate my scanning. Unknowingly to me, I can scan faster by hand than I can with this device.

My issues:
1: Software

A) There is no way to save your scanning preferences. When scanning using the TWAIN driver, all scans are done at maximum resolution and color depth and then outputted at 1 bit if all you want is black and white. This makes scanning a page take forever, even when all you want is black and white. When using the WIA driver at least it will scan in 1 bit BUT the default setting is full color, 200 dpi, and A4 paper size. To change to "black and white", 150 dpi and letter size takes 4 mouse clicks and must be done EVERYTIME you scan a new series of pages.

B) The scanning drivers do not play well with PaperPort meaning you lose the ability to collate 2 sided document scanning.

2: Hardware.

The scanning setup is painful. The scanner head is docked at the far right. When you feed documents via the ADF they are rolled past the screen on the far left. So, the first sheet is fed in, the scan head moves over to the left, scans the one page, then moves BACK TO THE FAR RIGHT!?! The next page is fed from the ADF and the scan head moves BACK to the far left, scans that page, then moves BACK to the right. This is repeated for EVERY page. Why can't the scan head stay docked to the left and scan in all 30 sheets before moving back to the right (like it does when faxing)?.

In my tests, scanning with the WIA driver and using the ADF, it only scans 2 pages per minute. When I scan by hand on my old scanner I can do 3 pages per minute.

Otherwise it prints well and faxes well but as my primary need is scanning I will be looking elsewhere. I will be returning this and posing the above comments on Amazon, CNET, e-opinions and others to warn people to look elsewhere if they want an ADF scanner.

34 Stay Away
This unit is a replacement for another unit. Both units stopped working in the first 3 months of service. I will send the 6110 back to HP and figure it was an expensive lesson. The customer support is a joke. After a week of exchanging emails on how to fix the problem, I was told to contact a real person. The real person then took me thru the same procedures and it still won't work. Guess I will look for another brand to buy. This is my fourth HP product that has failed. Two HP 6110's and two Pavillion computers.
35 Absolute Worst Printer.....I Will Never Buy HP Again!!!!!
The printer was easy to set up out of the box..I will admit that... that was the only thing that was easy to do.... the install was IMPOSSIBLE.... I am running Mac OS 10.3.2 the latest OS. I used the driver from the CD. The computer never was able to add the printer even though it found it. The computer was able to try scanning but it had communications errors. I was never able to get the drivers to finish the install. I called HP Customer Care. HAHAHA! They suck so bad! India is really sinking the levels of tech support to new lows. After being sent to Apple for tech support (HP needs Apple to fix HP's problems???? *confused here),

I was sent back to HP. It was their driver after all. The woman told me my computer was the cause of the problem. It was not because I has just reinstalled the OS. I called HP again and was told to do the same lame troubleshooting steps. After 10 tries of doing the same thing, it's not going to fix it!!! I am so upset that HP has wasted my time and my money. This printer was not cheap, either!!! HP has totally lost a customer for life! I hope they know that. I wish I could give this horrid machine a 0, but unfortunately I cannot. Stay away!!!! Far far away.

36 Simple, sturdy and reliable.
I bought this to replace the nightmare Lexmark 4-in-1 that I had fought with for 18 months without success. The HP 6110 is a tremendous improvement.

Any all-in-one device is an ambitious undertaking and so far after 6 months this one is living up to the tasks --- all four. The only thing I was worried about was if my 5 year old Compaq with 64 Meg RAM and Windows 98 OS would be able to handle it. Well, so far after 6 months it is working flawlessly. It installed easily with my USB cable that I already owned and the HP print and scan program which has an icon on my desktop is simple to use as is the photo editor.

I used it this past Christmas to create about 55 greeting cards using HP greeting card stock which I bought from the HP web site. I had no problem using different size cards of different textures and the photo printing has been excellent.

I have also been impressed with the scan ease and quality. There is simply no substitute for a glass panel scan surface and this one works perfectly fine.

The only negative comments I might make is that is comes in only one drab color scheme which is dark gray casing with a light gray top. Hey it's not a piece of art but it works likes a champ. Also, it's not exactly whisper quiet.

37 Excellent all-around machine
My home office space is very limited. So I knew an all-in-one multifunction was what I needed. I originally purchased the Brother 5100C based on the low, low price. But I was very displeased with the print quality of the Brother. So I sold it to my sister-in-law and went out and got the HP 6110. I chose this because of HP's print quality and the fact that I don't really need some of the bells and whistles like photo card slots or network printing. I was not disappointed with this HP.

Print quality is excellent as I'd expect from HP. I particularly love the ability to change out the black ink for a Cyan-Magenta-Yellow (HP 58) cartridge to get 6-color printing. The difference is well worth it. My wife and I used this machine to print out photos for our christmas cards. With the black ink and standard color cartridge, you could see the black dots in areas. With photo glossy paper and the HP 58 cartridge installed the quality was photo perfect to my eyes. Most of my friends thought we had reprints made at a photo lab. I find ink usage to be reasonable. I printed out about 100 Xmas photos with ink left over. Plus ink prices are actually reasonable considering how much older HP models and many Epson ink cost. The copy function works very well and is pretty much idiot-proof. The fax part is a real bonus. Pretty much straightforward fax features. The only part somewhat lacking is the scanner part. It works fine for most folks, but scanning photos is subpar with the image looking flat and with little life (hence my reason for only 4 stars). But I suspect most professionals that require high quality scans would most likely not be in the market for an all-in-one anyway so this is a reasonable trade off.

Definitely would recommend this unit. Though there may be cheaper multifunctions out there I truly believe this one is worth it. The last printer I may ever need to buy with the added bonus of having copy, scan, and fax capabilities all rolled into one.

38 Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. HP....
Mixed emotions was once described as "seeing your mother-in-law going over the cliff in your brand new Cadillac." Well, this printer has left me, after months of ups and downs, with very mixed emotions.

When it worked, it was impeccable. The print quality was exceptional. The sheet feeder made faxing legal size docs effortless and fast. The ink cartridges, which I refill rather than replace, lasted longer than most inkjets. Business cards, postcards, glossy greeting cards, photos, faxes, copying, all perfect. Or was it?

Without warning, items sent to print just WOULDN'T. I couldn't clear the printer without restarting my computer, assuming that it didn't cause my usually stable computers (yes, I tried both) to crash. The problem, according to the troubleshooting guide at HP's website, is driver problems when used with Windows 98. While they were aware of the problem (even the salespeople who took it back knew about the problem) no fix is available, other than to get XP, I guess. The live tech support folks in Canada or India were very nice but they just basically just held my hand while I uninstalled and re-installed the software repeatedly trying to get it to work properly. By the way, the software doesn't even properly uninstall to reinstall without a "scrubber" program they email to you or that you can download from their website.

Why a company would do this is beyond me. A multi-function user isn't typically a cutting edge sort of techie-they're like me, using it to do the work of 4 machines in a home office or small business. I would assume I'm not the only person out there that is doing fine with Windows '98 and that might not want to get into major upgrades just to have an HP printer. Incidentally, I purchased a very inexpensive HP V3520 printer while this was all going on and it works just fine, as does the Lexmark 6170 that I replaced the HP 6110 with.

I will write a review of the Lexmark soon, but I like the construction of the HP better, the footprint is smaller, less edgy, etc., but the Lexmark WORKS every time, so I'll keep it!

39 Dont buy the HP 6110!!!!!
I couldn't be more disappointed with this printer. I print about 50-100 pp per day and have to replace the black ink cartridge about every 2-3 weeks. In addition, the printer outputs documents in reverse order which is a real hassle with longer documents. Look somewhere else for a better value and more convenience.
40 AAAAAGGGGGG!!!!!!
I would give this unit 5 stars from a fuctional aspect but ZERO stars for reliability.

I used to love this printer until it started having problems. The original until failed when the USB connection died at the printer level. The second replacement unit failed after two weeks, when the flatbed scanner stopped working. The third unit just got RMA'd with a printing problem. The documents only print partially, and then it gets spitted out.

If there was a lemon law for electronics, then this unit would take the cake. The only thing I can say, is that the support guys in India have no problems in sending out replacement units.

41 Perfect for me
First - I love my printer! I only gave it four stars because, to be honest, it is the only multi-function printer I have ever owned (and I use it very lightly). So this is hardly going to be a comprehensive review. I have owned mine for a year now, and I use it at home for printing (I haven't tried printing photos), copying, occasional scanning, and faxing. I love it! The combo flatbed (necessary for copying pages from books) and feed tray (necessary for sending multi-page faxes or copying many pages at a time) is really the only way to go. Combine this with the great space-saving ability of this machine (everything in one!) and you really have a great deal. Initially, I had a problem with the pages printing slightly crooked. I emailed HP, which was no help at all. I ran all the diagnostic tests, to no avail. Finally, I happened to notice that the back plate to the printer wasn't latched properly - and in fact, it WOULDN'T latch properly. With a little bit of paper stuck in the latch to force it to close (annoying, but hardly worth paying the shipping to send it back to have it repaired) it worked fine - no more crooked pages.

True, the ink cartridges cost a lot. OEM cartridges are cheaper, but then you run the risk of damaging your machine - the best option is to find cartridges at your local Costco, and stock up when they are in stock. Given that I only use this machine at home for occasional use (I am a student, so I definitely DO use it), and that I try to print everything in black and white, and usually on the fastest, least ink-intensive settings to save $, I have no complaints myself about the ink usage. If you print intensively, or have to use the best quality settings, you will probably resent the price of the ink cartridges, but I do not mind so much. Neither do I have any complaints about the drivers, as other people have had (according to their reviews); after running the included installation CD on my Windows XP Pro, Windows XP Home, and Windows 98 machines, all of them successfully printed from my small home network. (Those of you with network problems should try running the software on each computer, not just the main one.)

If you are looking for a top-quality, industrial machine for intensive/business use, why are you looking at one of the cheapest multi-function combo flatbed/document-feed machines available? If you want a machine for a small home office or personal use, and you want the convenience and space-saving ability of a multi-function, all-in-one, combo flatbed/document feed machine without paying an arm and a leg for one, and don't mind shelling out for more expensive ink cartridges to make up for the inexpensive price of this printer (or, like me, are willing to print out at fast-quality instead of best-quality all the time), then I highly recommend this printer - it has certainly served me well so far, and I am quite happy with it!

p.s. You WILL need a USB printer cable - easily purchased at your local radio shack or any other computer or electronics store, or you can order one from amazon. It is rather annoying that HP won't include a cable, which really doesn't cost that much, considering how much you are shelling out for the machine, but there it is. So don't be shocked when you can't hook it up out of the box, if you forgot to get a cable with it!

42 Great Equipment, Just Slow
I got the HP multi-function printer/scanner/fax/copier for work. It does a great job at everything it supposed to do. The sheet-fed scanner is a huge time saver. I can copy, fax, or scan without having to switch pages on the flatbed. It saves a tremendous amount of time. The color printing is of excellent quality. It was so good, I found myself having to scan old photos for half the people in the office, which was not a time saver.

I only had two complaints. When I first got it, the sheet feeder squeeked. It did the job, but it was very annoying. I finally got sick of it and sprayed some WD-40 they had at the office here in all the wheels and gears, and the squeeking stopped. The other complaint I have is the speed. The scanner resets to home position after each sheet-fed page instead of staying where it is and waiting for the next page. Printing also takes some time, even on lower quality print jobs. If I had a customer waiting for a print job, it was always much faster just to print to the network laser and walk across the building to get it. The software can get awkward on multiple pages, but there are plenty of software packages out there that can do the job, including that which comes with Windows XP.

In the end, I think it would make a great home device, which is what it's really built for, or a nice desk machine in a small office.

43 Photo printing capability way over-rated
After reading all the reviews and comparison shopping, I opted to replace my good old T45 (which had an internal part break off that could not be repaired) with an officejet 6110. I bought this model rather than a less expensive one on the positive reviews for its photo printing capacity and we do a lot of digital photography in my house. We had to return the first one as it continually gave us error messages on setup and wouldn't print a sample page. The second one installed immediately and seems to print, fax, scan and copy as well as the old one, but the photo printing has been a huge letdown: we can only print about 10-20% as many photos compared to the T45 before the color cartridge is out of ink and the quality is nowhere near professional. The color isn't that true to the photos viewed on the computer, either. I may return this one as well.
44 Does the job very nicely
I bought this to replace an old laserjet and have been very happy with it. Copying and scanning work well and printing from either the ADF or the flatbed has given me no problems. I am using it with both MAC and PCs on the same network -- no problems there either (after I downloaded the latest MAC drivers).

Copy quality and speed are great for our home office. Photo quality is pretty darn good too. The printer uses most paper --- including borderless 4x6 with is a great snapshot size. I have a higher end photo printer too (an Epson 2200) which is great for larger more "serious" photos but for quick jobs I often use the HP.

Can't confirm the negative comments about drivers/software -- have had no problems with either OS. I do agree with the comments on the inks -- three separate color cartridges would be better -- but that's a small ding.

There are many multifunctions out there now -- and several are likely good. For the money and features, the 6110 still seems to me (after about 4 months) one of the best. Highly recommended.

45 Save your time and money
I bought one of these thinking the automatic feeder would save me loads of time. Now instead of minutes it takes hours. HP's tech support's only advise was to buy more equipment and to reboot my computer. I thought they realized we outgrew that trick 10 years ago. When I tell the machine to read from the feeder it reads from the flatbed and vise versa. Don't spend your money on this untested product. The only nice thing I can say about this product is that if you can keep it working for more than 1.4 minutes it can print four pages on one sheet of paper.
46 printer's great - install's horrible
I got this muti-functino printer about a month ago -- took me about 3 days to finally get it working. Called up HP several times b/c scanner/fax drivers weren't being installed properly.
However, after all that, i finally got it installed & since then, it's been working great. I would recomend this for any1 looking for a multi-function printer ... but, during the install, just be a bit carefull & try not to get too frustrated
47 Good printer. Drivers did not install properly at first.
Good printer. Drivers did not install properly at first and required several calls to HP's help desk. Not that it works, I really like it.
48 It's the drivers, stupid!
HP is known for dreaming up some great ideas in hardware. This multi-function is one of them. Too bad the folks who write their drivers don't have the same abilities. The drivers for this unit are the weak link, and this could be a 4 or 5 star unit if even the tinyest bit of thought went into the drivers.

The scanner on this unit defaults to maximum optical resolution and maximum color depth. Worse, even if you adjust the resolution and color depth for a scan, the unit sets back to the defaults after each and every scan. This means that if you are using the automatic document feeder to scan 30 pages of text, you cannot select 200 dpi in B&W - you must use 300 dpi at full color depth. So instead of your scan saving in less than 2 megabytes of disk space for 20 pages, your scan ends up consuming several GIGAbytes of disk space! Worse, when you go to print your 20 page black & white text file, since it was scanned in color, it will now print in color (a slower, more expensive process - even when the only color is black) That is just plain stupid and renders the document feeder all but useless.

I returned my HP and bought a Brother. Brother works with Paperport software, the industry standard. HP forces you to use their own clunky software. HP's manual says you can use Paperport, but after trying it with very limited success, HP customer care informed me that the scanner will only work properly with HP's own software. Brother's drivers also allow you to easily and permenently change the scanning defaults so you can taylor your scanner to what you do the most of, instead of forcefitting your life to what HP wants.

Disclosure:
I own a fair amount of stock in HP-Compaq.
I own No stock in Brother.

sad, but true. I wish for the sake of my portfolio that HP would get with it. Look at the way Brother does things and emulate them. Please!

49 decent if somewhat flawed multifunctional printer
Our four-year old R80xi workhorse multifunction printer quit printing one day. After spending a week trying to coax it back to life, I finally took it in to Radio Shack to drop off for repairs. It is still waiting a diagnosis as I write this.

During that week, the whole family felt the need for this multifunction printer. I didn't realize just how much we had come to depend on it.

When I looked at a replacement, I compared this to HP's 5510, 7110, 7130, and 7140, as well as the psc2410 and psc2510. I briefly looked at the Canon and Brother multifunctionals, but didn't really seriously consider them since their printer cartridges didn't seem to be any cheaper, but are certainly less ubiquitous.

I settled on the 6110 mainly because of the price and features - autodocument feeder for faxing, HP's Photo Smart technology (the 5510, and 7110-7140 have an older photo technology), alleged networkability, and the low price. The 6110 price was less than half the original price of the R80xi.

I almost didn't buy the 6110 because of all the complaints posted in customer reviews about it in various websites. Finally, I gritted my teeth and decided that we really couldn't live without one of these things, and so I decided to buy it. I bought it locally from Staples because they had a rebate offer going, and because I could return it more easily if I really hated the thing.

So, after about a week of use, I thought that I should address some of the issues written about this printer - some turned out to be true, some not:

CONS:

1. Smaller, lower capacity, and MORE EXPENSIVE inkjet cartidges. This actually isn't a fair comparison. The R80xi's inkjet cartridges are much older technology and have become much cheaper over the last year or two. If you take HP's posted online prices and print capacity ratings for the inkjet cartridges, then the 56 black cartridge of the 6110 is 23.4% more expensive than the 45 black cartridge of the R80xi (per sheet of paper printed), while the 57 tricolor cartridge of the 6110 is 66% more expensive than the 23 tricolor cartridge of the R80xi. If you look at discounted prices, however, the difference is even more striking - the 56 black is now 38.8% more expensive, while the 57 tricolor cartridge is some 258% more expensive. That's right! That's two and a half times more expensive!

2. Scanner function of 6110 CANNOT be networked! I was told by HP's pre-sales agent that the 6110 could indeed be networked, by attaching it to the HP 175x external print server. However, after getting the 6110, I found in the user's manual this statement that the scan function of the 6110 WOULD NOT WORK if the printer was hooked up to a print server. The print server works only for printing. And so I have not gotten a print server for the 6110. Currently I have it print off one computer only. The other computers can print through this computer across the network.

3. Flimsiness - the two main areas where the 6110 is flimsier than the R80xi is in the inkjet cartridge locking mechanism and the plate holding the paper for the automatic document feeder. Two small plastic tabs hold the ADF paperfeeder plate in place.

4. Slow - definitely prints slower than the R80xi. Much of this slowness is in the waiting period at the beginning of the print job. It almost seems as if the printer CPU was some older generation (cheaper) model and it just had to slog quite a bit to figure out how to print the document.

5. Lower quality control - the main thing here was the dust covering the entire flatbed scanner glass pane. The underside of the glass plate also had some streaks of some type of filmy residue. Fortunately, this filmy stuff was mainly at the edges and so I have not tried to take off the entire cover plate to clean up the underside.

6. No USB cable included. Yes, this is a pain, especially since these specialty electronics stores seem to think that this is where they can make some added profit out of you by charging exorbitant amounts of money for a USB cable. So plan on looking around a bit for a Type A/B male USB cable. I found one for just a few bucks.

PROS:

1. Works well with my Windows XP (Home Edition) and Office 2000 system. I have been able to use the Microsoft Scan program (part of the the Office package, I believe) and have not had to touch any of the troublesome HP scan software mentioned by others. Dunno what other people's complaints are all about - probably they are using different OS/software.

2. Fax and copy functions, and autodocument feeder all work fairly well. Have not looked into this issue of holding the incoming faxes in memory. We don't get that many unsolicited faxes. I'm not that big of a fax user - the ADF was mainly for my wife.

3. Quality of photo prints is MUCH IMPROVED over the R80xi. And this is with the regular 56/57 cartridges. The 58 photo cartridge is supposed to be even better! (and more expensive! - the 58 photo cartridge is rated for only 125 sheets of paper - compared to 391 for the 57, and 649 sheets for the 59).

4. Scanner light can be set to turn off after one hour!(user manual explains how to do this). Several reviewers complained about the scanner light always being on. Actually, the default setting is for the scanner light to turn itself off after 12 hours. You can adjust that down to as low as 1 hour. The R80xi had a similar setting where the the scanner light was turned off after 12 hours, but it could NOT be set to turn the scanner light off sooner. So this is an improvement

5. Smaller than the R80xi.

Anyway, I am planning to use remanufactured inkjet cartridges on the 6110 to keep the costs down. I am also hoping to get the R80xi repaired and back into action. This new 6110 printer will then just become a backup copier/fax/scanner/printer until the inkjet cartridges start to get cheaper.

50 Get the Lexmark x6170 instead
I purchased this and the product was found to be defective immediately. The store I bought it from had another "returned" item for sale and after I returned mine learned that nearly half come back defective. I usually don't write reviews, but thought I'd save someone else the trouble, according to the guys in the store the Lexmark 6170 is a much better product and with the $50 rebate is only $200 now.
51 LOUSY. Don't bother
This machine lasted 137 days. Used it maybe 80 times. HP would not replace it, they insisted on repair. I Sent the machine in and it was returned unchanged. They still would not replace it. I had to send it in again. I have had to buy another machine to replace it. Terrible service and a piece of junk.
52 Scanner disappointing
I installed it on Windows XP pro. It's an OK printer/fax, but I am very disappointed with the scanner. I use the scanner a lot just to move multi-page documents off my desk. The scanner is rater slow. For some unexplainable reason the scanning element moves to the home position to the page feeder scan position (the position it needs to be to scan from the feeder) and back ON EVERY PAGE. The scanning software provided by HP (HP photo Imaging and HP director combined programs) is very hard and slow to use. I much prefer Microsoft Office Document Scanning, but it fails with the HP scanner and only half of each letter sized page is scanned (I have played with the configurations to try to fix it). With Microsoft Office document scanning the scanning element moves even more back and forth. To solve the Microsoft Office Document scanning problem HP customer support only suggested to reinstall the software (I did it a few times, no improvement) and eventually suggested that I should not use Microsoft Office Document Scanning! I like the multi-page tiff format, for some unexplainable reason that format is not available from the "scan" button on the machine or in the scanning software menus. Somehow HP photo Imaging still let's you save files in the .tiff format from the menu (but from the menu no other familiar format e.g. gif, jpeg, Acrobat ... are available!!). The familiar formats are only available by configuring the hardware scan button. Note that the scanning lamp is always on (why?) and the printing head is noisy when the machine is powered up (cleaning itself??). The paper supply is small and the last page is always printed on top (so you have to reorder you documents unless you print the first page last). All in all it's disappointing.
53 Owned it for an hour and I love it
I have a Dell PC running Windows XP and had zero problems installing this. Took about 20 minutes. I was upgrading from a cheapo Canon S300 that decided to stop working yesterday, and this is really my first experience with a modern color printer that cost over $200.

I'm VERY impressed. The B&W regular document quality is outstanding, easily as good as my old HP laserjet, far better than any other inkjet I've used. The color is very good as well. I printed one photo, just to test it out, using HP photo paper, but using just the regular ink cartridges (WITHOUT the photo ink cartridge), and I thought the results were excellent.

Tested the copy, fax, and scanning, and everything works perfectly and was very easy to use for the first time, without once looking in the manual or reading a help file.

The rating should really be 4.5 stars. Minor quibbles that prevent it from getting the full 5: It would be nice if it came with a USB 2.0 cable, and it would be nice if the fax software integrated more with your PC, as others have said. I primarily plan to use the fax features for faxing out anyway, as I use an e-mail service to receive faxes.

But for someone like me who's self-employed and wants a good printer, fax machine, copier and scanner (in that order)for a home office, with some pretty good photo capabilities as well, this multifunction is pretty awesome.

54 EXCELENTE!
EXCELENTE impresora. EXCELENTE COMPRA!!
55 VERY POOR FAX MANAGEMENT
We purchased a hp 6110 and found its fax management entirely unsatisfactory.

There is no facility to manipulate broadcast transmissions. we work with various project groups, and of course set up speed dials etc for them. but if I want to send to only three of say 5 people in the group I have to set up a new group. Which is impossibly time consuming.

Our hp 590 multi function unit, which had died, did this with a beautiful pop up menu system on the PC. For some reason HP have dropped this from the 6110 software. HP's support services were nearly useless, and I spent many frustrating hours on the phone, and more than the machine cost on our IT techs time trying to sort out if we had incorrectly set it up. I am still not sure if other Hp product eg the 7130, will do what we want as I could not get a convincing answer from hp, or the retailer.

Its probably ok the occasional fax, but as an office machine I dont think acceptable. So it is going back and I am searching for an alternative.

Thanks to everyone who has posted comments (specially on alterate machines) and I hope my comments help someone else.

56 Great Price, Limited PC Interaction
Pros:

You can't beat the price for this multi-function printer. Does a great job scanning (with options to email, imaging, word, etc.). The print quality is better than I expected (I really didn't buy it for the printer, but the other "functions"). And the Auto-document feeder is great for copying and faxing.

CONS:
*Can't Network - Only supports USB (and parallel). I wanted to connect this printer to another computer but "operate" it from another...couldn't do it (you can share the printer through the network, but you can only use the software on the connected computer).

*No Fax Software. You can't send a fax from your computer using the printer, nor can you store faxes for viewing before printing. Bummer. I get fax spammed so much, I would have loved to preview and delete if I didn't want the fax (without printing). Even my 4 year old HP all-in-one did that!

Overall a good product, but falls short of totally satisfying me. Then again, I can't argue much due to the price.

57 Total Disappointment
I have always used HP multi function products with much success, the HP 6110 is a dud ! I have had three shipped to me & spent much time & effort setting them up only to have each one fail. The fax works only sometimes & only to certain numbers. I other parts work but are very slow & the machine makes the same grinding noices that convinced me to replace my old HP 570. How I wish I had it back !
58 Works great out of the box
Printer is easy to set up. Worked perfectly out of the box. The control panel on the printer is easy to use and so is the software which you can use to control the printer as well. This seems like a great product for a small office such as mine. My previous printer was an older model HP laser printer; when I changed over to the inkjet I was concerned about text quality and print speed. However, I am impressed with the text quality and speed seems good. The print quality of scan and fax looks fine to me. I scanned a few of my photos after I set up the printer -- I thought the scans looked clear and pretty accurate. My only negative comment is that the feeder trays and cartridge holder clips feel like they are made of flimsy plastic -- but I guess that's par for the course these days.
59 Excellent all-in-one
I normally don't like all-in-one units since they seem to be jacks of all trades but masters of none. This unit, however, is one of the best I've ever used. My company has definitely put it through its paces; we use it for 100% of our faxing and photocopying needs, and we also use it was one of our primary office printers.

A lot of folks on here who have given it bad reviews are likely having computer problems. (To the fellow who complained that it doesn't work with Windows ME: that's Windows ME's fault, not HP's. ME is one of the worst versions of Windows ever. To the fellow who complained that it prints, except it jams when printing from the Internet: if a printer can print from some programs but not from others, then 99% of the time that means your computer has a problem, not the printer!)

No, it doesn't come with a USB cable... but as somebody who resells and configures printers for a living, I can tell you that a decreasing minority of printers actually come with the cables these days. Also, HP's Mac support on this printer is spotty, and don't try to use it as a standalone (IE, without a PC attached) since you need a PC to do some basic configurations (such as telling the fax machine to print faxes rather than store them in memory.)

Keep in mind that if you're buying a new printer because you're having problems with your old one, your problems might be with your computer, not with the printer! Before making any major purchase like this, it's a good idea to get your computer checked out by a shop or an IT person to make sure your computer is in good working order.

Bottom line: if you have a good, new computer running Windows XP, this is a great unit.

60 Rather Impressive Machine . . .
This is another fine product from Hewlett Packard. It is a scaled down version of the older "d" series and the current 7100 series all-in-ones. While it is a quality machine for home office/home business applications, it is also a 3rd generation HP photo printer, like that in the current line of HP Photosmart printers.

The 6110 caters to quite a large audience. It has most of the features of the HP 2210 (it is lacking the 6-in-one memory card reader), but it has several things that its comparably priced little brother does not. It has a form feeder, which really makes faxing and copying easier. It has speed dialing capabilities, and has an 80 page fax memory.

The 6110 has the ability to scan at 1200 x 2400 d.p.i., which is on par with their top-of-the-line stand alone scanners. It can print 4X6 borderless photos, black & white at 19 p.p.m, and color at an impressive 14 p.p.m.

The only drawbacks for this machine are that it uses the #56, #57, and #58 cartridges that require swapping between the #56 & #58 for photo printing, and that the capacities of these cartridges are less than the ones used in the 7100.

61 HP Officejet 6110
After reading other reviews and a recommendation from the salesman at Office Depot I decided to purchase this unit. I installed it today in about an hour. I have tried all the functions, send and receive faxes, scanning, printing, and copying. I am very impressed with the quality of the unit and it's output. Everything worked, even better than I expected. I am using Windows XP
62 Great Product
I bought this product, and Iam happy so far. The set up on my desktop was a breeze. I have only had it a few days, but iam very happy so far. The only thing that confused me, whille setting it up was that when I installed it on my laptop, i could not use the "quick scan" button on the machine. It took about 4 hours before we realized that that the printer will not run in the background on a laptop, you will have to manually open the program and press scan. I also had some trouble when emailing scans, I did it the first time, but you may have to work some things out with it, but it is an aswome product!! But note that the USB cable does not come with it, i had to wait another week to get it. The ink cartrages are soooo small, that I have a feeling they will not last long. I say give the printer a shot, it prints fast, easy setup, great quality, you should be happy!!!!
63 6110 and Mac OS X Jaguar printer driver issue
This printer is fantastic even though I didn't think so at first. The problem is that the printer driver on the cd-rom that comes with the 6110 is incompatible with my OS. I use OS X Jaguar (10.2.6). The printer driver that comes with the printer says it's for OS X for the 2110, 2210, and 6110 officejet printers. I guess that's kind of true because the driver did work fine during it's entire first day of use.

However, the next day, the printer driver would not allow me to use the scanner, and it frequently required two attempts to successfully get a print job through. When attempting to scan from the printer, I would always get the message, "Unable to Connect to PC." When attempting to scan from the PC with the HP software, my computer would be busy doing "something" (I don't know what) for a VERY long time. Then, when the scan preview window finally appeared, it was empty because nothing had been scanned!

I finally fixed this problem by going to the HP website and downloading the latest printer driver specific to OS X which is the following:

Description:
HP OfficeJet 6100 series software/driver

Release Date:
2003-05-01

Revision:
6.0.7

Size:
45.56 MB

I downloaded this driver, uninstalled the old HP software and driver, disconnected the USB cable, restarted my computer, connected the USB cable, and installed the new HP software and printer driver. Almost everything works great now. I can scan from my computer, but scanning from the printer only worked the first time I tried it. After that, I started getting the "Unable to Connect to PC" message again. That's too bad, but at least I can scan from the computer software with no problem. Hopefully, HP will release another driver to fix the problem with scanning from the printer. Either way, I'm deducting one star in my review for this printer driver issue. Other than that, everything good said about this printer in all of the five star reviews is true:

-Great color and B+W print quality
-Great photo printing (be sure to use the optional 6-color photo ink cartridge and premium glossy photo paper for best results)
-Great copying quality
-Great scanning quality (when the driver works)
-Great ink usage. I've read complaints about this, but I've printed quite a few photos and both ink cartridges still say they are at 90%.

I haven't tried the fax yet, so I can't comment on it.

Basically, if your OS works fine with the printer driver for the 6110, then this is a great multifunction printer to buy.

64 This baby is awesome
I just got it today. Flawless setup, copied, scanned, faxed great and faster than expected. It is a very good looking printer setting on your desk and has a lot of options. Only drawback I see is that the ink cartridges are freaking small, so I doubt they'll last very long. Seems to be a better printer than dad's G95 printer which I thought would be hard to beat. Also is cool you can feed it one envelope for addressing through a special slot for fast printing (have to remove paper for multiple envelopes)
65 overall a good all-in-one
I own this printer for about two months now and it has worked great so far. All the printer features are usable with ease when my home laptop is not docked and the software is unavailable. For quick, everyday copying or printing, I find the 'quality' button on the printer useful - 'Fast' mode runs the catridge once on the paper but produces a conveniently usable output and the 'best' mode is outstanding.

I have not given this a five stars because I am not happy with the color scan quality. And no comments on the photo printing because I do not use it.

The product is reasonably priced compared to the similar ones on the market. At the time of buying I narrowed the choices down to the HP 2210 and this printer - I preferred the automatic document feeder to avoid baby sitting the machine, did not need a memory stick slot and went for this one. I am very happy with this product and would recommend buying it.

66 Doesn't Work with Windows ME, it's awful
I am an office manager of an advertising agency, upon in depth research I choose the 6110. Upon in depth usage I wanted to throw it out the window. Everything and anything that could go wrong with it did. It is not compatible with Windows ME or for usage on a network. It took 3 different returns to HP (a new machine resent 3 times) and it still wasn't working properly. So finally I am having them take it back and give me a full refund. I've only had it for 6 months. Be sure you're machine will work with this monster.
67 I hate my HP all-in-one printer.
I have an older HP (Office jet G55Xi). It worked sort of ok for a year or so (each print job did crash the network), but when I upgraded my network well it quit working. I have the Jet direct server, which can be upgraded, and presumably that would help, but it requires a PC (I have macs) to do the upgrade. Soft PC does not seem to work. SOOO I figured I can just use the USB port. No such luck. My mac cannot find the printer when I hook it to the USB port. However, the HP installer does crash my computer. So, I call them. Its out of warranty. Please have your credit card ready to pay for support. NO F'N way buddies. I will never buy another HP product, and (especially if you are a mac user) I urge you to consider companies that actually make usable products. It makes a pretty good copier at least. Other than that its a rather expensive paper weight.
68 HP6110 is a homerun!
I wanted an easy to setup and use printer with sheet-fed copier/fax and flat bed scanner that would print in color as well as BW.

I found that setup and most/all functions were easy to set up and use. The print speed is fast and quality is great, especially the color photos in 3 or 6 ink cartridge versions. The 6110 looks good, takes up very little space (as compared to my fax, printer and scanner today), is quiet and fast.

The only two things I didn't like about the unit were:
1) No USB cable included, but this is minor,
2) You can't fax from any application directly through the 6110, you need to use additional software not included with the 6110.

So far I think this is the best multi function printer I have ever owned, in this regard I agree with most of the earlier reviewers.

69 Quality multi-function printer at an affordable price
I purchaced the HP 6110 printer about a month ago and have used it extensively. The copy, scan and print funtions are easy to use and the quality is superb! I have only used the fax capabilities on 2 occasions so far so won't elaborate on it. I use this primarily for photo printing and it does a great job. Even scanning 4x6 photos at 1200x1200 resolution print an unbelievable 8x10 enlargement (using optional photo cartridge). I would suggest an extended warranty as their are many moving parts in this device although HP is known for their quality.
70 GREAT MACHINE
I did a LOT of research on multifunction machines and finally decided to buy the HP 6110. I am thoroughly happy with my decision. My primary uses are photo printing, scanning and once-in-a-while faxing and copying. The print quality is great - I love the enhanced 4800 dpi photo printing. An 8 by 10 print from a 4 megapixel camera looks like it came from the photo store. Wonderful!

I'd read several reviews that stated that the machine was hard to set up. I have come to the conclusion that those reviewers did not follow the poster that came with the product - it was SO easy to follow and I had no problems whatsoever. Setup on Windows XP was flawless.

Don't forget to get a USB cable - they do NOT include one with this machine.

Overall, I am very impressed with the 6110 and I am truly happy with my decision. Highly recommended!!

71 Love this machine!
Best features of the printer are the auto paper feed above the flat bed scanner, the auto paper sensing (knew that I had left labels in the document feeder when a fax came in and asked me to insert paper so it didn't waste a sheet of labels for a fax...pretty sweet), great job printing professional glossy documents, fast, and reasonable lasting print cartridges. The only thing I miss about my 2210 is the camera memory slots for uploading picutres.
72 No Problems At All
I almost didnt buy this MFD because of the negative reviews but boy am I glad that I threw caution to the wind. After a year of printing regular docs on my LExmark X73, I bought a digital camera and found that the X73 would lock up about 3 inches into printing a picture. After two weeks of trading emails with LExmark Tech Support, they copped out and blamed it on the application I was using. Pretty weak argument given that I couldnt print using 4 different photo applications! Do yourself a favor, stay away for Lexmark products. So, I bought the 6110 last night, had it hooked up in less than 15 minutes following the installation poster to load the software on a Windows XP system, hook up the printer, and print my first test photos. Thats when I was left in awe. This was a "test print" so I didnt massage the photos at all from my Fuji 3800 (Great Camera by the way) or use HP's photo paper or even swap to the photo ink cartridge. I used some old glossy photo paper and printed two 5x7's on one 8.5x11 sheet. When I grabbed the print as it popped out of the printer, I couldnt believe my eyes. I cant find any dot patterns at all, the colors are as true as when I was standing there taking the picture and overall is every bit as good as a print from a photo processor. I Highly recommend this product.
73 Exactly what I wanted!
I wanted a printer, copier, scanner, and fax machine that would print in color as well as BW, be easy to set up and use. I wanted a flat bed copier for copying from books as well as a sheet-fed copier/fax for multipage documents. This one fit the bill. The print quality is great, parts are easily put together, paper easy to load, all functions easy to set up and use. It looks good, takes up little space, is quiet and fast. An extra, nice-to-have feature is the reduction/enlargement copy feature. I could finally reclaim space used by my old scanner, printer, fax--all of which were separate appliances. I've had the 6110 only 3 weeks and just the fax feature has more than earned the price I paid for it. The fact that a USB cable was not included with the 6110 was no problem. With all of the machines I've had, I wound up with extra cables so I didn't need to purchase one. I love this machine and am completely satisfied with the quality and functionality of my Office Jet 6110. Forgot to mention, I use it with my Win XP-HE with no problems at all.
74 Get machine!
I needed to replace a fax machine and also wanted something that could scan onto our computer which runs on Windows XP. This printer really works well. I have received many faxes and also sent a few. No problems at all. The print quality is excellent and it is very easy to scan. The only thing I haven't done is print photos. Set up was very easy -- it installed quickly on XP with no problems. I would highly recommend this machine.
75 Big promises, big problems.
I bought the HP Office Jet 6110 All in One because I am working from home and need copying, faxing, scanning and appreciate the compact size of this machine. Upon receiving it from HP, I realize that HP does not include the USB cable. That's the first annoying thing. You get everything hooked up, and HP leaves out this cable! Why?

As soon as the software was downloaded, I began to get error messages on my screen and those other messages that say "this program has performed an illegal function". Printing was fast, except it stalled after one or two pages! There was no deleting documents from the "queing" file.

I went to the HP website to get "technical assistance" the kind where no human is there, only links to questions other people have asked. You could go crazy wandering around this enormous website trying to input your question. For example, my printer would "delay" and not print so at hp.com I typed "delay" and "printer". Hundreds of items came up--seemingly unrelated to my question.

My other complaint is that the parts in this machine are [] plastic and poorly designed. The ink cartridges are held in place by really brittle plastic holders that are difficult to operate. The feeder tray does not snap into place. The paper feeder is a guessing game as to how the paper loads.

All in all, this all in one is another example of trying to do too much and achieving too little.

76 Excellent and economical office multifunction device.
This well-rated machine fully lived up to expectations. Color copies are high-quality, the 33.3 kbps modem is faster than most (28.8) so faxes move along briskly. Document and graphics scanning is more than adequate, and included software lets you do basic touchups. The included OCR software accurately places editable text in a word processor for further editing [haven't challenged capabilies with more complex layouts such as newspapers or magazines, however]. After 3 months of moderate use, I'm still printing with the original cartridges [the two-way 'HP Director' shows how much ink remains in each cartridge--neat].

My one problem has been the flimsy plastic automatic document feeder (ADF) guide that inserts into the ADF with two little tabs. I never achieved a solid fit, so that each time the scanner lid was lifted, the ADF guide slid out. Eventually, one of the supporting feet broke off after yet another drop, so that the guide is even more unstable...this is a fine and solid machine, well-suited for a home office with useful software included. Do note this is an USB (not parallel) cable connection, so make sure your computer has USB.

77 Good printing, Horrible Fax
If your primary use for this machine is as a fax/copier then don't get it! We sent the first of these back after HP told us that it was defective. The second one had the same defect. Maybe the term is "design flaw"!

The machine was saving every fax that it recieved in its memory. After about a week the memory was full and some of the features (such as copy) stopped working. HP informed us that to clear the memory we had to print out all faxes in memory (what a waste of time, paper, and ink since we had already recieved all the faxes) or we could unplug the machine for a while then plug it back in. Sure enough, unplugging it worked, but isn't this unreasonable. What if someone is trying to send you a fax over the weekend, the paper or ink is out, and the memory is full? The thing just won't work! Isn't that what the memory is for anyway?! HP said there was no way to turn the memory function off either.

If you don't plan to use the fax often, then this is a very nice machine. The print quality is very good and the six color photo cartridge option is excellent. It is fast enough and the control panel is very easy to use. Of course, we didn't have it very long to determine durability (only a few weeks).

We used it as a stand alone unit, so I don't know how well the software / scanner features worked.

78 HP 6110 all-in-one
Great Machine................
What a great surprise, after reading about all the problems with other machines(both HP, Canon, Brother, Epson etc...) I was really expecting some problems with setup and use.
What a great suprise, the setup was easy and painless. All the functions work without any problems. I have had the machine for 2 months, I use MS XP. Pat
79 Amazing, Amazing, Amazing!!!
I've tried every function on this machine and it works perfectly! Love the faxing and the scanning. Color copying is also a major plus. Running on Dell with XP. Setup was easy. I absolutely love this machine.

Note that if you are sharing a fax line with a phone/dsl line (basically have only 1 wall jack, like me) to make sure you use a phone cord that only has 2 gold connectors (look in the head on either end). Most regular phone cords have 4. If you hook the 6110 up with a 4, the 6110 will say that it is "off the hook".

80 Beware of Digital Answering Machines - Revisited
I am updating this review from a two star rating to a four star rating. Initially I had a problem with the integration of the fax function with a digital answering machine. The system was supposed to allow a answering machine to work in line with the fax. The answering machine would pick up and the fax would listen for fax sounds and take over if they were there. It didn't work. I called HP support and was told that the system had trouble with digital answering machines - they tried to fix it but eventually suggested I take the machine back. I wrote the CEO of HP complaining and my phone started ringing within days. Since then HP has put a fix on their web site which worked well. I chose the second option which is a unique ring pattern for fax messages. If not for my difficulties with support this would be a five star rating. This is a really nice multifunction.
81 NO DSL - hardware fails
This is not acceptable for anyone with a home office for the simple reason that this fax machine will not share a DSL Line. Since I use a DSL line for our fax line at home, this was a complete waste of time.

After surrendering to the idea that I must use the fax on my regular phone line, I encountered yet another error - my line rang busy all the time - prompting a call to the horrible tech support group with HP.

I spent four hours working with tech support (who couldn't seem to spell "Stevens") until we determined that the fax wouldn't release the line after it made a call (i.e. like leaving the phone off the hook).

82 Solid performance
I purchased the HP Officejet 6110 AiO really to just try it out. I had been looking at a number of photo printers, scanners, etc. I was torn between seperate units and the space that would be required and the thought of an all-purpose machine.

I was immediately pleased with the ease of use and the great quality of output. The scanner does a solid job and I have scanned and printed 5x7 photos that look very good (even without the optional photo ink cartridge that I haven't purchased as of yet). The small "footprint" of the 6110 really is what makes it a benefit to my home office.

I have tested this machine extensively and I have had no problems with the document feeder as other reviews have indicated. The print speed is amazingly fast when in "draft" mode, and even in "best" mode the print speeds are very quick. The only complaint that I have to this point is that the hinges on the copier do not expand, which makes photo copying from books more difficult.

Overall, I would give it a 5, but nothing is perfect.

83 An excellent machine for a low price!
... After having a fitful night's sleep due to the incessant whining of my little girl dog, I was quite exhausted when I purchased this. However, I had a friend in need who requested a scan. So, I hooked it up to my P2 Celeron computer with Windows xp Home on it. I followed the instructions on the installation poster exactly and had absolutely NO PROBLEMS with it. Even while completely exhausted and somewhat flaky. It works just fine and I look forward to getting the optional photo cartridge to give that a try as I do a lot of digital photography. I don't know why others have had problems with their machines. Maybe their paper jams were due to humidity levels or maybe their paper was old or not fanned out prior to inserting into the printer. Maybe their fax printing was just a glitch. Regardless, at this date I have performed all Microsoft Windows xp home updates and have had no issues with this printer at all. I absolutely love it. ...
84 A machine that does it all except the laundry!
Okay. I am not one to give 5 stars to everything. I am usually very critical, but after reading the reviews of others, and knowing my personal experience I have to say they must have got stuck with a dud. And, since it's always important to download the latest drivers regardless of whether or not it came with a disk is my motto. Also, I noticed the complaints coming from Windows XP users. I say, that's the problem. Windows XP is the WORSE operating system created to date, and it is what drove me away from Microsoft. The last straw so to speak.

I have successfully faxed, scanned, copied, colored copies, and printed on this machine without a hitch. I was initially concerned about the ink, since the cartridges seemed rather small compared to my late HP Deskjet 832, but I have printed 100s of pages without changing them, or losing print quality. Also, the software comes with a nice gage to let you know where you are with your ink.

I've printed photo quality pictures with this, and I understand that there is even a special photo cartridge which I will soon be purchasing. This is a money saving alternative for small business owners or home users who don't or can't spend thousands of dollars on a color laser printer, xerox machine, fax machine, and scanner. I also can't stress enough how much SPACE it saves. Although tall, they managed to keep the width and depth small enough so that it still rests perfectly on that ledge that some desks come with (such as mine).

I've made 50 copies of a sheet filled with data using the normal setting, and clocked it at about 3 1/2 minutes. I've stood in front of a xerox machine longer. I don't understand why people have problems with the fax machine, either. When you do the initial setup it asks about your phone line, and you can adjust the settings to know whether it's a fax or a voice call. I've had no problems with the machine deciphering between the two.

The only thing that I haven't tested or are sure about is networking. I am wirelessly linked, and my router has no USB adaptors. Since it's outdated anyway, I think I will upgrade my router for one of the extreme models, that come USB ready, and try it out. I'm sure it shouldn't be a problem.

I am using Macintosh OS X Jaguar, and my husband uses Windows XP. He can use the machine, but setting up the drivers initially were a hassle.

85 difficult and cumbersome printer
timely and difficult to setup.
automatic document feeder does not catch very well. have to give it a few tries.
fax auto answer does not work all the time. many times fax went on when it was a voice call.
still haven't got print and scan to work even though usb cable works fine. called hp, said maybe software version (recvd 2.0). they are sending v. 2.02. I have windows xp home version.
Overall, would not recommend purchasing this product unless you fully test it and definitely would not recommend buying over the internet as very difficult to unpack and repack.
features look nice when reading description but does not work as written.
86 HP 6110
I JUSY GOT THIS MULTIFUNCTION HP 6110 YESTERDAY AND LOVE IT. SET UP WAS EASY,ALL THE FUNCTIONS WORK GREAT. I HOOKED THE FAX TO MY PHONE LINE AND IT WORKS GOOD, EXCEPT CAN,T USE THE PHONE WHILE RECIEVING OR SENDING A FAX BUT I CAN LIVE WITH THAT. THE PHOTO QUALITY ON THIS MACHINE IS VERY GOOD, I USED PHOTO PAPER, DID,NT EVEN USE THE NUMBER 58 INK, THOUGH I GOT IT JUST INCASE I DO NEED IT IN THE FUTURE.HOPE IT CONTINUES TO PERFORM WELL..
87 Great Idea...still a few bugs?
My main reason for purchasing the 6110 was to replace an old Brother-560 fax machine. At the retail outlet I realized I could upgrade my printer (and what an upgrade the 6110 printer is!), and replace my scanner at the same time. First lets get all the great things out of the way. It scans, prints, and copies better than I have EVER seen before. My problems are with the FAX RECEIVE. ALL faxes that I receive are cut-off on the right side. A perfect 1/4 inch margin shift to the right on ALL faxes that come in. I have returned the unit and am on my 3rd one with the same problems. So far HP tech support has no answers. This unfortunately may be my reason for going to another manufacturer.
88 Printer Function has Problems
When printing from the internet, the printer will jam. Also the printer will restart the computer on it's own. The fax and copy parts work great. I am using windows XP
89 Could easily become a five star
This machine has everything I was looking for: multifunction, automatic document feeder, envelope slot, ability to copy legal size (through the ADF only, flatbed is only up to letter size) and reasonably priced compared to competitors' models. I'd suggest that HP put a backlight on the display, make the fax setup instructions a little more user friendly and change to separate ink tanks from the 3 color cartridge.
I've only had it only 1 week, so I can't comment on how long the ink will last. So far I have faxed, copied, scanned and printed photos as well as text. All is great.
90 I love this machine
The 6110 seems to offer the best of several worlds. It is a flatbed scanner/copier AND has a sheet-fed attachment that allows you to scan or fax up to 35 copies at a time. This product is much better than I anticipated. The included software has worked flawlessly for me (surprise, because I use a Mac running OS X), automatically inserting scanned items in to the program of my choice, and giving the user several helpful options for copying and faxing. It copies and faxes without requiring the computer, in color as well as B/W. It's quiet, a pleasant surprise, after reading about some other HP all-in-ones. It has been sold in Europe for a while, but only recently arrived in the states. Printing resolution is equal or superior to the HP 970 series printer that I previously owned.

Cons - The 6110 does not have slots to read memory sticks and other similar photo image storage devices. If that's a need, consider some of HP's other products, like the D series, or the 2110. You'll pay at least $...more for the photo slots plus the sheet feeder on a flat-bed. I didn't need them, preferring to download photos through USB.

And one final bonus, for me at least. The duplexer that came with my previous 970 is the same one that fits the 6110. So now I have two-sided printing (big paper saver) AND didn't have to shell out $... more for it.

Really happy with this purchase.
