HP OfficeJet D145 Inkjet Multifunction

Compras Nikon
Bluetooth
Combining four premium quality machines in one, the HP D145 OfficeJet is ideal for offices that emphasize quality but have limited floor space. Measuring just 22 by 16 by 13 inches, this unit includes flatbed scanner, fax, and color duplex copier, and a printer that allows you to print photos directly from your digital camera.

You can scan objects up to 8.5 by 14 inches; thicker objects like books and magazines are easily accommodated. With standard resolution up to 1,200 x 4,800 dpi (enhanced to 9,600 dpi via imaging software), your graphics and photos will achieve true, vivid tones and rich color depth.

The printer processes sheets at 8 pages per minute in black and 7 ppm in color. The automatic document feeder handles 50 sheets of standard paper in letter and legal sizes. The input tray holds 150 sheets, 22 envelopes, or individual pages of labels, transparencies, card stock, or glossy photo paper. Photo resolutions up to 2,400 x 1,200 dpi will give your images a professional look, while print resolutions of 1,200 x 600 ensure that your text documents are clearly legible. The same attention to detail is offered in copying: 99 duplicates can be made from a single original, and features like fit-to-page, mirror image, poster, and two-on-one are standard.

The 256-level grayscale fax sends and receives in just three seconds per page, and includes features for forwarding, polling, and blocking junk mail. The D145 is compatible with Windows and Macintosh systems, and connects via a USB port. Hewlett Packard includes a one-year warranty on parts and service.

Small businesses and home offices are looking for photo-quality printing combined with high-performance faxing, scanning and copying and excellent productivity. The HP Officejet d145 delivers remarkable color printing, faxing, scanning and copying to the office user.
1 Wonderful WHEN IT WORKED!
I purchased the d145 in January 2003; approximately two months after the one year anniversary of the purchase (and the end of the warranty period), it ceased to function. Having owned at one time or another : a Lexmark X73, a Compaq bubble jet BJC-600 and a Brother laser MFC 4550, and NEVER having had a problem with any of them more serious than a paper jam, I suppose I was defying the odds when I elected not to purchase the warranty upgrade. I thought HP was just a reliable as some of the others; now other wiser individuals tell me they have faced similar problems with HP, namely breakdown of one part or another just after warranty expires.

Specifically, whether from a computer copy or from the copy function itself, it became impossible to complete anything without the message "Scanner System Failure" appearing as the machine shut down. For a time I was able to trick it in to making a single copy by shutting it down, then turning it back on fast. However, soon even that "trick" no longer worked. Of course, all the troubleshooting hints failed as well. At one point I even thought perhaps the room was too cool for the printer and went so far as to swaddle it in blankets! That generated two copies!!

I finally got around to calling about printer repairs, having pressed the Brother back into action, but the answer is almost universal, that for an ink jet it is usually cheaper to buy a new one than to repair an old one. A laser printer is far easier to repair, I am told, as the parts are easier to access.

My advice, if you want to buy the hp d145 do so ( it WAS wonderful when it worked), but protect your investment, buy the extended warranty.

2 danger will robinson!!!!
this is a terrible machine. it is the noisiest piece of equipment we have ever purchased. it eats toner. it feeds paper 2, 3, 4 or more pieces at a time, especially if copying on reverse side. it goes thru so many motions to print one copy that you almost forget what you were there for. when working from computer it reduces copy to one tiny corner of paper for no reason, in the middle of a run. it is a piece of junk and we will replace it as soon as we can get over the 500 bucks we were ripped off. the only guarantee we can give is that we will NEVER buy an hp item again!
3 Poor reliability: a clunker
I bought one of these expecting it to be a reliable machine designed to last heavy use. Even though I only use it lightly, the print and scan carriages often crash, the print heads come loose and are marked as bad, the windows USB drivers don't survive hibernation properly, and the thing starts flashing all lights and demands to be rebooted half way through a print. If it was still under guarantee I'd take it back. Even now I'm thinking of buying a replacement as I need to get a new cartridge (and that is a significant percentage of the price of a replacement) Oh yeah. Buy a printer with separate cartridges for each colour. You always run out of one particular colour first, so why throw away the rest?
4 Worst product to work on macintosh
I bought D145 a year ago and despite rares drivers update it's still using 25-50% off CPU even when not printing, i can't scan and it's so slow to print. Don't buy HP product for mac !
5 Ink RipOff
I should have done more research into HP printer cartridges before I invested in this MFC. I run a small business and need a reliable, cost-effective printer. In order to save a significant amount of money, I use refilled cartridges. HP has put a time bomb in its cartidges by setting an expiration date on the cartidge. Even if the cartridge is still full! It totally stops working with no override available (there is an override for the ink level for refilled cartridges). Thier explanation for this is to protect us from degraded ink...The real reason is to force you to purchase expensive new ink cartidges at regular intervals whether you need them or not. It is interesting that they only do this on business oriented machines and not on the cheaper consumer models. The cheap machines must not need the "protection" from a degraded ink. I guess if ink costs per page is not an issue and having a ready supply of recently purchased ink cartriges on hand is within your budget, then this is the unit for you.

This thing is history!

6 Too many features, no function
I have struggled with this machine from the beggining. It is a case of a machine trying to do too much and not getting anything right. If you need very basic limited quantities printing, scanning and faxing then it is ok. Trying to create photo projects and printing graphics is a nightmare- for every one print, there are 3 that go wrong. Also does not handle well for irregular sizes- cards etc., must hand feed, no batch printing. Not worth the money or the space savings, and HP does not stand behind the product.
7 Fair multifunction performance
Performance from this multifunction Officejet is inconsistent. Maybe its just me but it tends to mangle envelopes when attempting to print, is a temperamental fax machine and it requires rebooting (shut down the unit, wait 10 seconds and boot back up)once or twice a month. Unit is also extremely noisy. On the upside, Unit prints and copies consistently well and the plug-in flash card feature for printing photos is quite handy. I suggest demoing competitive models before deciding on this Officejet model.
8 A true workhorse inkjet multifunction ... finally.
The d135, d145 and d155 share a common printing engine with Hewlett-Packard's high volume business inkjet series of printers, and yet this multifunction machine comes in at similar cost.

The built-in card reader is only so-so, lacking the features to transfer any data but photos that a full-blown CF/SM/MS reader would carry, but it is convienient. What this does offer, and the reason this was purchased over the less pricy d135, is both full duplex printing and scanning and copying. For printing out documents several hundred pages in length, it's a great money saver to be able to do double sided.

In addition, this printer is unique among all other standard sized inkjets available in that it uses the thermal self-cleaning inkjet technology, not utilized by Epson or Cannon, who use vacuum inkjet which is prone to clogging, that uses seperate ink cartridges and print heads. This lowers the overall cost of running the machine, as well as reducing or eleminating the color ink wastage usually assocated with multi-color cartriges.

I've had this machine for six months, have already run over 5,000 pages in sharp inkjet with color graphics, and by now this machine has already paid for itself over doing a similar volume with any other inkjet printing engine available. While it's not a laser, in a small volume situation this could easily eleminate the need for a laser printer.

9 Great multifunction device
My husband & I really, really wanted a copier & scanner - this product does the trick. I bought it based on CNet's rating & amazon customer reviews. We were a little worried that the ink would bleed when touched & that the output wouldn't be great. However, to date, we have been very satisfied with this product's performance - printing & copying. Its well worth the price & i'm glad i didn't fork out the extra dollars for a laser multifunction.
The set-up was just a little bit weird. I needed to cold boot before the product starting working. This product will be useful if:
- you copy stuff once every week or so
- don't insist on laser quality printing
- you intend to print photos
- upto 5 people need to use it
- you don't want a superfast printer.
10 It really should get 4 1/2 Stars in my book (updated)
The Officejet d145 is the second multifunction HP I've had, the first being a g85 series. Having it all together is a great feature, and the d145 has one over my previous multifunction in that it has slots for my digital camera memory cards (thin, thick and even the memory stick). And, what's terrific is that when you insert your camera's memory card into the d145, it asks you if you want to upload the pictures. When you press "1" for yes, it creates a folder in "My Pictures" for the particular months the pictures were taken and uploads them. The print quality is as good as my photosmart printers, which is terrific!

Faxing and copying are effortless, with fax numbers taken from Outlook and other address books.

The d145 would have gotten a 5 Star rating from me had the scanning software been as easy to use as what came with the g-series multifunction I had. When you scanned with the other, it asked you what you wanted to send the scanned article to (Word, Wordperfect, PaintShop Pro, etc.), with the d145 you have to establish the applications that it will scan to. This may not be a problem with other buyers, and once I learned I needed to do it, it presented no problem.

One last item, I have an unbelievable number of items hooked-up to the computer that has the d145, so many that I use two USB routers to expand the number of USB ports. I've noticed that some items, such as my PDA desktop cradle, caused my d145 to go slightly haywire with the LED's flashing. Making sure both did not share the same USB expansion router solved the problem.

Overall, the d145 is the best multifunction printer, copier, fax, scanner, I've every had, and I'd recommend it to anyone wanting the best of all worlds.

UPDATE: I recently purchased an HP Camera for my Step-Daughter (Photosmart 720) and one for myself (Photosmart 850). Both use the little SD memory cards. The d145 I purchased only a couple of months ago does not have an SD slot. So make sure your camera's memory is compatible with the slots on the d145.

11 Getting better all the time
H-P is finally catching on the time and attention-deficient home office worker who wants plug and play and professional results. My d145 started up right out of the box and works "reasonably" well, with few hangups:

Print quality - great, even on glossy or ordinary paper. You can make a photographic print that looks like real photo process.
robustness - careful, "light" plastic
speed - good
scanner - works well
fax - nice operation
software - limited, funky, kind of a joke

envelope printing - perfect!!!!
Smart card - a gimmick. For $100 less you can get the same machine without this feature. If you need it, very handy, otherwise, not a big deal.
Lacking: transparency mode for scanning negs. The software ought to be able to let you turn off the lamp during scanning. But it does not. Oh well....

Anyway it cured the clutter! One laptop + the d145 = entire office.

Bob

12 Lots of Problems
This printer doesn't print consistently with my Windows XP laptop. It fails to print on most documents because of connection problems with the laptop. I am using it with a new Compaq 2800T running Windows XP Professional. All of the software is standard and updated. HP support has been very poor with suggestions like plug the printer directly into the wall. When it prints, the printer is noisy, uses a lot of ink, and has only average print quality. It also seems to be constructed of cheap parts.
13 Great multifunction, but below average print & scan
I shopped long and hard before I settled on the HP d145 as the multifunction solution for my home office. Compared to the other affordable ... all-in-one machines, this one was the best. Although it was the most expensive, it's not perfect by any means.

PROS:
Fast plain paper prints and copies. EXCELLENT, mind-boggling plain paper copy quality. In fact, I printed some photos for a friend, and after printing 4 or 5 copies on photo paper, she preferred the plain paper copy over them all. Double-sided prints are a nice convenience, and the paper feeder is nice when you need to copy something that's double-sided and/or multiple pages. A big time saver over scanning the pages one at a time, figuring out how to place the front side in the feeder to copy on the reverse, etc... This feature alone makes the machine worth the price. The card reader works great, and although I usually just download my images to my PC and pick them for printing from there, the few times I've used the index feature (for when I just took a bunch of photos and wanted to show them to somebody right away), the speed and ease of it was very nice. The onboard LCD is comprehensive, easy to learn and use, and my 9 year old son figured out how to make copies on his own in about 10 seconds.

So why didn't I rate this machine 5 stars?

CONS:
Put simply, photo printing. I own a cheap (less than one hundred dollars) Epson color printer that embarrasses the d145 when it comes to photo printing. Why would HP put a PHOTO CARD READER on this machine, and then offer such lousy photo printing quality?! You can't print anything borderless without using a paper cutter or scissors after the fact. My Epson machine will print beautiful borderless 8.5 x 11 photos that are much sharper and photo-like at a fraction of the cost. Now I see that HP has a new model, the d155, that comes with an onboard print server, but appears that everything else is the same as the d145.

SCANNING: Not impressive. The spec sheet would lead you to believe that this machine can do some quality scanning, but I was very unsuccessful in that area. I have an older, SCSI HP Scanjet 5p that won't work with Windows XP, so I wanted something newer that would take it's place... The d145 scans were full of static and noise, as if it was running some sort of sharpen filter by default. I spent 30 minutes reading the manual and going through the settings trying to fix this problem with no luck. If you are content to scan at lower resolutions for web use, then the scanner is probably fine... but if you want high resolution scans for printing, I have some reservations about this machine. Also, it gives you the ability to "Scan to..." a few different applications, like Outlook, Word, and HP Scanning software... but I couldn't find a way to scan to my program of choice, Photoshop. I had to scan, then cut and paste to get the images into a graphics program for editing... which they needed desperately for touch-up because of the noisy scan.

CONCLUSION:
If plain paper printing and copies, ease of use, speed, and saving space are your priorities, then this machine is PERFECT. However, if you want to print nice, frameable photos, I suggest you do what I did and buy a dedictated photo printer ... You might also want a dedicated scanner as well.... which sort of defeats the point of an All-in-one doesn't it?

14 D145 The best unit I ever bought
Great Unit. Setup was easy and worked flawlessly under Windows 2000, XP and ME systems in my house.
Its a bit loud and uses lots of ink but worth the investment !

Best product I have owned hands down.....

15 Somewhat Overrated, plus Fax problems
I was planning to get the D135, because I viewed the card reader as a gimmick (I've already got one). I found the D145 at a decent price, so I got it instead. The card reader actually turns out to be a very neat feature. When you put a card in, it asks if you would like to download the pictures! The proof sheets were cool. The double sided printing and copying is nice.

Onto the negatives:
I was disappointed with the photo quality - compared to my old Canon s800, the image was blurry. Print speed was adequate. When I tested the color copying, I found that a cyan colored patch in the original had been printed a greenish tint. Other colors were fine. The color calibration didn't fix the problem. The D145 would also slightly smear copies on one corner. THe D145 is somewhat large. All of that I could live with, except that the damn thing WOULD NOT SEND A FAX! It could recieve a fax just fine, but not send. My old cheap panasonic fax machine had no problems whatsoever. HP Support was useless - they would keep responding with the same sequence (test the line, try using a phone on the line to see if you could place/receive a call, is DSL on the line? and so on). While they were decent tips, it became tiresome the third time they asked you to do it.
16 No 800 Phone support
The other reviews did not mention these problems.

There is no 800 Phone support from HP. After being left on hold for over 30 minutes it became obvious that HP was not going to support help me on the instalation problem I was having, the Ink Carriage would not center for loading of ink. Three hours to install a printer!

There was no documentation that stated that you cannot write to the Memory Card. To get high quality scans you must run a seperatre program. Both were key reasons for buying this product. Also, to network this printer or to use parallal cable requires very expesive attachment.

Still looking at the other features work, but will probably return this by the end of the week.

17 Works Fine for Me
Well, I just got the printer today. My first multi-function print. It replaced my old Canon BJC3000. I had a minor problem with the lower feed tray not being detected. Took about a minute to fix. Then, after the print head alignment, I put it through the works. Scan, copy (1 and 2 sided), printing (1 and 2 sided), and faxing.
Results?
Everything went without a hitch. I highly recommend this printer for general home office use.
As for the negative reviews, check this printer out for yourself. You can go to almost any computer/office/electronics store and ask them to give a demonstration of it's capabilities.
18 GREAT BUY
I shopped for a MF machine for months. My old HP printer was starting to go bad, and the scanner stopped scanning. We just purchased a digital camera and it was time to replace the old. The HP officejet 145 was the greatest purchase! Not only did it replace my scanner, printer, and fax, I know can copy color documents rather fast with great reproduction.
The software that is included is awesome. I can now take different photos and place them on one sheet of photo paper. This alone saves money in wasted photo paper. There are many options for photo layout and it becomes very hard to tell them from film.
This product has all the things rolled into one. For a home business, it really fits the bill.

If I had one complaint it would the motor that drives the scanner. It sounds like HP used the least expensive one they could find. It's kinda loud.

19 Good experience so far
Own the printer for about a year now; I drive it with Windows 2K Server sharing it to my home network; Works very nice;
A little slow to print pictures at high quality (as expected), but does a very good job. Only Thing I don't like (and that's why I don't give it 5 stars) is that there's not a manual-load tray, or input slot; I miss that when I want to print just a page in some sort of different paper or letterhead; You got to load the paper in the only tray there is and it is a little cumbersome when you try to load just one page or two.
Besides that, it is vey snappy, and love all the duplexing features it has, like copying from two-to-two one-to-two, and other combinations.
Faxing is very sharp (receiving and sending), the software is adequate; I recommend it to run it in a powerful machine (it could be slow on old processors)

I think I got my money's worth.

20 ...
Good People,

This ... product has inspired new levels of anger and frustration at the computer industry. I hate this machine and everything it's made of. It has been a problem since day one. Now it just won't print. Irony #437? When it prints, it's gorgeous.

It has bad drivers that so screwed up my flawless new Imac that I was convinced it was Apple. "Kernel Panic" they call it. Yeah - how about mud in the gears? Slow was a dream. Normal - forget it.... It took HP weeks to figure out there was even a problem. When they did post, all it said was a blank link for a week.

It has unreliable print queues. Forget actually knowing what will print when.

It is loud, awkward and I am calling HP first thing tomorrow to send it back for a full freaking refund.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!

...

21 Works wonderfully with XP!
This all-in-one has definitely met my expectations in all 4 of its functions. It does exactly what it says its going to do and fits very nicely in a home office environment. I think that maybe some of the negative reviews here may have been due to the customers expecting a machine that will run copies, fax documents, print photos, and scan as fast as their nearest Kinko's Copies. If that is what you are expecting, then go to Kinko's Copies (or to your office job) to get your print/fax/copy/scan job done. As far as I'm concerned, the resolution on this machine is fabulous-even in "normal" mode, and it does a lot for such a compact piece of equipment. You can use the HP's software or Xp's "camera & scanner wizard" to scan documents and images. It does it all very cleanly and intuitively. Oh, and it does automatic double-sided printing if you set it to do so (i.e. go to "File" in toolbar, scroll to "Print",click on "preferences", click on "features" tab, check "double-sided printing" box), which is a great (and hassle-free) way to save paper! It also beats having to drive to Kinko's or go to work when I need access to a fax machine or scanner. This is my first HP as well as "all-in-one" purchase, and I am impressed.
22 "Out of Box Failure"
If you look at features, this is the multi-function of choice. It's got it all, 33.6 multi-sheet fed fax, full duplex copying, legal sze flatbed scanner and hi-res printing, all in color or B&W.

I had read about potential reliability and other problems. But I figured if it works, it'll work great. Today I brought one home from. All told, I put 4 hours into buying it, trying to get it to work and then returning it.

It could not align the print heads and print a test sheet. Twice I loaded the print heads and ink jet cartridges. The ref. manual and website had no recomendations for this specific problem. The printer would try to align and then spit out a blank sheet of paper(off the table and onto the floor no less, kind of like a toaster). Since my first HP printer (5L) turned out to be a pile of junk, I had no patience to again suffer through HP tech support (on my dime) just to get the stupid thing working for the first time.

I am through with HP. Canon will most likely get my business. Check out the upcoming F60 and F80 (on website but not in stores yet).

Roy

PS. Market price (retail) for this item is($$$).

23 Not ready for Prime Time
The HP d145 is a new product that I took a chance on.

I had it for one evening most of which I spent on the computer with HP on-line support.

There were problems initializing the machine after the printhead and print cartridges were installed which required a "secret code", only known by HP, to unlock

The install documentation is abysmal.

The final straw was when I finally got it hooked up and the FAX didn't work. After another hour on the support line, the tech support person said that I needed to make an appointment with an HP service person.

I will be returning it to Staples tomorrow for a refund.

My biggest concern is not these problems but the idea that my business would be without a copier, a printer, and a FAX if anything at all goes wrong with this kind of unit.

Buyer beware. Certainly not worth the risk.

24 145 is a BUST
I hate to say it but this thing is a BUST. The photoshop & print features are very good, as is overall quality but....

The scanning features as they relate to data transmision directly to Word do nit function in the XP environment. 2 hours with Tech support on the phone did not help. All they did was give a "backdoor" to make it work. That isOK, but for [item price] you would expect full functional;ity in all features.

BEWARE XP users.....

I returned it and went with a Canon product.

25 Constant support needed
If you have a network be aware that this can be a nightmare to keep the manager working. On one of my computers I gave up the manager and used the scanner from other software which works. Be aware not to use Tweak-XP it will attach to your printer files and try to load each time you try to print. A nightmare at best. I do like the features but like others I have 3 other printers on a jetdirect hp and this dosen't work. They have more work to do on this one.
26 It worked for 60 days! >:-(
Pros: Excellent features and physical layout.

Cons: Software has strange quirks and it died after 60 days. Not happy!

The Bottom Line: I would recommend this unit if HP stood behind it. Replacing it with a refurbished unit after 60 days of very light use is ludicrous.

Recommended: No

I bought this unit, the 250 sheet tray and a 3 year warranty which promised next day replacement if the unit failed. On the positive side, I was highly impressed with this all-in-one, the features and physical layout are excellent and it works well with my telephone system. On the down side; just short of 60 days of ownership and I come home to find every damn light on the thing blinking like crazy and it telling me to turn it off and then on. After reading all of HP's technical docs, I call them and in 5 minutes they arrange to replace it with a refurbished unit. Their excuse: the product is so new that's all they have and on top of that there's a backlog and I'll have to wait 7 days to get the replacement. Clearly they shipped a defective product and people are returning them like tickets to a bad movie. I'd wait a few months until they fix the bugs. I'm a very unhappy customer, too bad because my job requires me to purchase hundreds of thousands of dollars in IT hardware every year and I have an excellent memory.

27 Not compatible with other HP All-in-ones.
This may be a great printer, but if you have another HP All-in One installed, it requires that you uninstall the other printer or, if you call tech assistance, they can tell you how to set it up so that you can use one as a printer only. I bought one, drove to a job assignment 150 miles from a retailer, prepared to set it up, and found out that it was not compatible with my HP PSC-750. One or the other had to be uninstalled. Also requires a different ink cartridge than most other HPs, also a negative. I use one printer in my truck and one in the office, and need to have both installed on my laptop. Guess I would need to buy a different brand of printer/copier for the truck to use this. Too bad, I would have loved the print speed...
28 Simply the best
I have been searching all over for a printer like this one. I really needed an all-in-one printer because I do alot of things on the computer. The cost is another thing. I found that at [local store]you can get this printer for [money]. This price was good since to buy all the seperate things this machine has, you would spend a fortune buying a seperate fax, copier, printer, and scanner. The printing speed is also very fast which is helpful. This is a great printer also for people who don't have alot of space to put a printer. alot of other all-in-one printers are big and bulky. That is why I like is nice small compact design. Even though it is small, this printer gets the job done. I think this is the best all-in-one printer on the market today. If you go all over the internet looking for more information on this printer, every time you will see that this printer is simply the best.
29 The First Truly Great Multifunction Printer
This is the second MF printer I have owned, and it supassed my wildest dreams. The printing quality is very high in both color and B&W. The copier and fax capabilites are very simple to use. And the HP software is very easy to scan in pictures. Even the ink cartridges are reasonably prices ... Setup was a breeze with the USB connection. I set it up in under 15 minutes.

I would highly recommend this printer for some one looking for a all-in one machine. While it might be a little expensive, the quality is very high.

30 HP d145 just in and great
This hard to find new all-in-one printer scanner fax copier meets all my needs and has one benifet over the Canon F50. I reviewed and looked over both. The Canon F50 is a bit more attactive but even though it has a wide flat bed scanner it will only scan letter size flat bed documents. The HP d145 has a legal size flat bed scanner. I need the legal size copier for real estate work so I went with the HP. They will both copy or fax legal through the automatic feed tray. The paper feeder wheels are wider on the HP. Reviews indicate the HP software does not dominate the operating system software as much as the Canon does. I like that. If more attractive and not such a dark color it would get five stars from me. The HP d145 installation CD should be Version 3.0 not Version 1.0 as was packed with some units.
