HP PSC 1315 All-in-One Printer

1 Great For the Price...
First of All this All-in-One is great and works fine for me.

The Bad thing about it is installation took long time, the Installation Disc came with it was corrupted and stuck at 90%, i had to download the drivers from website (it wasn't too hard however..).

Another problem was after installtion everytime i started the printer it printed the test page, it happened like 9 times, finally reading the test page i figured out that test page was supposed to be scanned to align the printer (my bad).

Other then that no problem at all, print quality is great and speed is very good for the price i paid. I bought 1315xi model which came with photo papers and i print few of them quality is almost same as the walgreen.

Scanner is absolute perfect, scanning quality is amazing.

The great feature i like about this one is stand alone copier, thats what i use this machine for most of the time. Copier is excellent.

The bottom line, this printer is great for the price i paid,
I read lots of reviews about people having problem with HP products, i am not one of them.

Hey every product gives problem every now and then, HP products are tend to creat problem at installation, but once its installed it works fine.

So if you are looking for Low Priced Good Quality product go with HP, if you have lots of buck to spend go with some thing else
2 Bad printer, terrible service
Ever since we bought this printer, it's been nothing but trouble. We spend over a dozen hours (really, on the clock -- this is not an exageration) with tech support people. Finally they promised a replacement printer within three days, and almost a week has passed, and it hasn't even shipped yet.

You can do much, much better
3 Good value, but be careful!
The printer is good overall, but I didn't know that it was incompatible for wireless printing. My 5 year old HP inkjet was compatible to Netgear's print server, so I figured a new printer would be compatible, but it turns out the HP PSC printers are not network capable. If being able to wirelessly print is important to you, pick another printer.
4 Good Printer for the money
After reading reviews on this printer I almost didn't get it. But the price was to good to pass up on for a printer that does everything. And so far I haven't had anything go wrong or bad. I read that some people were having trouble loading the software. And maybe some paper issues, but that could have been on another printer or another site. Anyway, please see below for my install, I hope someone may find this helpful.
1st: Follow the guide install sheet, set up the printer with the paper, ink cartridges etc. (also, go ahead and put it where it's going to be, don't plug in the USB yet though)
2nd: Load the software, can take a little time. This is where I ran into a slight issue. I got an error after the load, I kind of blew it off and thought it's fine, it wasn't. I tried a couple of little things, nothing worked. So I went in and un-installed anything related to the HP printer install. Then I re-installed the software over, (unplug the USB again before you do this if needed)
The second attempt worked, boom, printer was good to go. I suggest removing and re-installing the software if you run into any problems. Don't waste your time troubleshooting unless your bored.
3rd: The paper, I almost forgot, don't jam it in there to far, just place it gently.
The entire setup maybe took me two hours, I'm guessing though, I didn't time it.
Good luck, and enjoy the printer, I give it 5 stars, I hope it doesn't prove me wrong :)
5 OK, unless you need to print small address labels
I like this little printer, but be warned that it has a problem that tech support doesn't know how to fix and HP now admits "there is no permanent solution at this time" as "the feed rollers are slipping on the surface of the label, causing the page to load incorrectly" (...). The workarounds that they offer do not always work, so you will waste lots of labels, ink and time trying to get the job done. The only solution I've found, which works most of the time, is to cut off the margin above the first row of labels so that it starts printing on the label instead of above it.
6 Pretty damn good!!!
This is a pretty good printer. My favorite thing about it is that it is very convientent. It is a copier, scanner, and printer all in one.

The printing jobs on it are pretty fast, though I wish the copier was a bit faster (especially color, took about 2 minutes). Though, overall, I was impressed with the print speed. Only took seconds for a full black text page.

The printer did not come with a USB cable, which had me pay an extra $20 for it. Though, that was a 2.1 speed USB, so it was supposed to be expensive.

Not many paper jams, though there were one or two times the paper had to catch itself, though the printer was good at that.mponamoab

I have used the scanner, which is handy-dandy, but I do have a digital camera (DSC-P73), so I rarely used this future. Though, at the spur of the moment...

The price for this was very good for this. I only paid $100 for it, which was cool.

Overall, I highly recommend this printer. It was a great deal.
7 Great Product for a Great Price
This is an ideal unit for people needing a printer/scanner/copier all-in-one.

While the printing isn't exactly photo-quality (what do you expect at this pricepoint or for a unit that does so many other things) it is more than acceptable. I use the printer for maps, directions, Word documents, etc. and it has suited my needs extremely well.

The scanner is better than I had expected which is wonderful. It scans both photos and documents extremely well and quickly.

The copier is also fairly fast and efficient and suits my needs wonderfully.

I've had the ink cartridges for nearly 4 months and haven't had to change them yet. While the cartridge replacements are pricey you won't have to change them too often which makes it affordable.
8 FABULOUS , FABULOUS !!!!!
Simply , THE BEST , all in one , for all money categories.
I dont understand , why waisting , more money , on some expencive models, when this baby, works FABULOUS !!
I have had many printers ets.. through years, but this is stuning.BEWARE only that this price is only STARTING PRICE. Much more you have to spend in next days , and weeks , for papers, and cartridges, becouse , you wont to get quit , with printing , copying , scaning , when you see, this photos.
9 Nice Inexpensive Compact All-in-one Printer with Pricey Ink
Many people have given their detailed reviews (pros and cons) of this all-in-one printer. So I'm not going to elaborate on my feedback. I got mine at the after-rebate price of $59.99 (a great deal), and for the price it's a very functional, decent all-in-one printer that fulfills my wife's needs--a compact-size machine with a single button to copy & print without ever turning on her iBook. Some consideration for a potential buyer to have is its rather fast consumption of ink--the black ink ran out after printing out about 150 pages of a document--and its little pricey Blk and Multicolor ink. (Unfortunately third party generic or remanufactured ink cartriges for this printer are not widely available; so I ended up buying the HP OEM ink, and buying a few of them cost me more than I had paid for the printer. Maybe that's HP's game plan.) If you're a power user and are thinking of using this printer as your only or primary printer, you may be better off purchasing a printer alone or another all-in-one printer that uses cheapter ink. Otherwise, I'm satisfied, and so is my wife.
10 Must have been lucky
I bought this printer at Wal-Mart last week. I hadn't read the reviews here on it because I had planned to buy a Canon MP390 which WM didn't have.. Had I read the reviews I probably wouldn't have considered this make and model. That may have been a shame because the 1315V has worked well for me so far.

Thanks to Bonz' advice below I very carefully followed the 15 or 16 steps given on the set up sheet IN ORDER. Then installed the software as instructed. Took a long time loading but it worked for me.

My pro's are:
Copy and scan produce excellent results.
Print likewise.
Photo copy seems adequate altho this is first really photo capable printer I've had. I suspect upscale machines or purpose dedicated machines would do better. I'm still working on sizing the photo copies (being 68 years old this doesn't come easy).

My con's are:
All mouse activated software responses seem very slow tho my computer is probably middle of the road fast.
Haven't found a way (if there is one) to turn printer on from context menu, or turn it off anyway but manually. My Lexmark did.
Doesn't seem to show the ongoing count as it copies. (Lexmark had that too).
Doesn't scan to PDF format like the Canon apparently does which could be a valuable tool for those who print longish documents or send out documents regularly.
Seems to use ink a skosh fast but on balance will probably be cheaper than the HP & the Lexmark I had before.

Sounds like a lot of negatives but for roughly $80 I consider this machine a BEST BUY for average printer needs. Power users should probably spend a little more.

11 just read Alan G. Kirk's review before buying
We totally endorse Alan G. Kirk's review. No excuse for this sad excuse for usability. Took it back. We believe the technical support "person" is an avatar running the Eliza program. The only reason for 2 stars rather than 1 is that the printer works. Other alleged functionality is not really there.
12 The button panel label stick is lame!!!
I have been working with computers for over 20 years and have bought and installed many many printers. Never have I spent more than 5 minutes setting up a printer. With HP PSC 1315, however, I spent over an hour pulling my hair out, until I finally gave up and called HP tech support for assistance. My problem with the printer, essentially, was a button panel label sticker, which had to be installed on top of the printer. The quicksheet, which I faithfully followed, had only a vaugue warning that the printer would not work until the label was installed. It did not have a sufficient warning (even in the user manual) that the back of the label has a universal bar code marking which has to be placed over a narrow scanning slot. The only direction the quicksheet, and the manual, gave was to align label straight with the edges. I did this but the scanner is is very fickle, apprently. The "out of toner" and "out of paper" LEDs along with the "copy black" and "copy color" lights kept blinking the whole time until I managed to re-seat the label (after painfully ripping it out from the printer).

The HP tech support person was very quick to point out my problem, which seems to indicate the frequency with which this problem occurs with this printer.

What was HP thinking? Be warned and be careful!
13 OUT STANDING!
I love my new HP, it was so easy to install!!! Having a scanner, printer, and copier all in one is just so great! The copier is so handy with my grand children always needing copies! I strongly recommend this product. Will always buy HP products in the future!!!
14 Not bad for it's price
I just got my HP 1315 this week and finally had the time to set it up. With the installation process, I suggest that it will be more simple if you just follow the instruction that came from the box. The setup process was really long which got me kind of anxious, but at least it went smoothly.

What I like about the printer is the printer, scanner, and copier function as it is a very convenient little unit. The size is compact and using it is very simple once you have it all hooked up. The print quality of the scanned picture is impressive. The copying function is good in that you can choose to make either color or black. The only thing I am slightly disappointed is that that when I print a document directly from my computer, the print quality is not too good, but with a multi-functional unit, there are some compromises.

Overall, I think it's a good printer for it's price range. I especially like the fact that the unit can copy without being connected to the computer. However, I also forsee a lot of ink cartridge money which shall be spent in the future.

15 Nightmare Installation
If your computer is 3 years old or older, stay away from this printer. In my 26 years of installing hardware and software, I have never experienced a more frustrating ordeal. I have invested approximately 8-10 hours in attempting to get this unit to work, but to no avail. The scan function is DOA. I spent over an hour on the phone with HP tech support (outsourced to India--pronunciation hell--nothing against Indians, the accent just added to the frustrating ordeal). I uninstalled and reinstalled at least six times, went into msconfig and turned off all extraneous boot items, tried four different USB cables and three different hubs--and no hub at all, a direct connect to the computer. Failure. Apparently there is an invisible, undiscoverable conflict with this unit and my older hardware. I give up!

I am returning this unit. I will never, ever in my life even for one half second consider another HP product. They've already robbed me of enough time, and their tech support is sketchy.
16 Great once you figure out the paper selector feature
I WOULD RECOMMEND BUYING THIS MODEL but wished I had read a review like this one first to save me a bunch of time - which, is why I write this. I hope it helps...

First, I bought this as a factory reconditioned item January 4th, 2005 at Staples. Normally, I would never consider buying a reconditioned printer, but at $70.00 USD, what the heck - Staples is easy going and never gave me any return problems.

CAUTION - this printer (or any other - anymore) DOES NOT COME WITH THE USB CABLE. You must buy it seperately.

FIRST TIME SET-UP: I have learned from years of frustration with HP drivers, it is just easier to get the quick hookup sheet and follow it exactly as it says. Even if you are a computer expert, save yourself the hassles, swallow your pride, and use the hookup sheet. Many of the other review posts I've read that complain about problems after installation, would not have had any problems if they just followed this simple rule. The instructions are easy to follow for any level computer user.

Now with that said, I will say that it took FOREVER to finish the software install. I believe it took so long because it was looking for every possible picture file in every possible location on my hard drive.

PRINTING: This printer prints very well - exceptional for $70.00 :) Although, it does not print even close to the speeds shown on the box. But, in HP's defense, I haven't found an ink jet printer yet that does, by any manufacturer. Draft mode is fast, Normal Draft mode is a very nice feature that is in between draft and normal. Example: Text printing with some colors and tables, I printed about 1 page every 8-10 seconds in draft mode, every 40 seconds in normal draft mode, and a grueling 1 minute and 50 seconds for normal mode. I didn't even try best mode because I didn't have the patience, and I wasn't printing photos.

READ THIS IF PRINTING ON ANY DIFFERENT PAPER STOCK. Boy I wish someone told me this - would have been great to actually put it in the online manual. When printing on labels, thicker paper, greeting cards, transparencies, etc... Go to printer preferences, change the paper style to "OTHER SPECIALTY PAPER". This will solve the - PAPER DOESN'T FEED PROPERLY problem I have read about in other posted reviews (and had myself). I was ready to chuck this printer through the window after ruining countless labels - not to mention lots of ink (printing in normal mode). Fortunately I happened upon this new-to-me feature (PAPER STYLE) while trying desperately to fix this problem.

SCANNING: Worked fine - no problems. Not the best scanner in the world, but again - for $70.00 you can't go wrong here.

COPYING: Worked fine - no complaints.

LAST COMMENT: This printer is LOUD! No matter what you do (print, scan, copy), it sounds like something might not be put together right. I have just learned to get used to it and not print after everyone else in household has gone to sleep.

Hope this helps...

17 Where the heck is the USB cable??
I just bought the HP PSC 1315 a few days ago and got
it today. I was very excited to own this printer
seeing that the last one that I bought was four years
ago and since then, I had lost the cables to it (both
electrical and the parallel port). I figured $100 for
a copier, scanner, and printer was a great deal
(versus $50 for new cables). So I opened the box,
pulled out the newer, sleaker, more compact model and
all its contents: two kinds of ink, electrical cable,
software, instructions, and the expensive printer
paper. I searched around for the USB cable that I
needed to hook this beautiful looking machinery to my
computer. But alas- there was no USB cable. I quickly
went back to all the documents to see the contents of
what was shipped to me. I checked the box, and sure
enough, at the bottom of the list, in small, bold
fonts were the words: USB cable not included. Then
beneath that, in small, bold font were the words,
Optional Accessories: USB cable, followed by the model
number. I was thinking- why the heck did they send me
this beautiful printer and no cable??? And more
importantly how is a USB cable (or any cable that
connects the computer to the printer) optional but
expensive printer paper that came with the printer,
not? I went online to see how to go about purchasing
this cable and found that it costs me an extra $20
plus tax and shipping. I would've rather paid an extra
$20 to get the cable instead of having to wait further
for it to come. After waiting anxiously for my printer
in order to print stuff from my computer (which I
assume most people do with their printers), I now sit
staring at my new printer and have to wait another
three days for my USB cable. Why the heck did they not
include this cable with the printer?? And more
importantly, why didn't the ad for this printer not
tell me that the cable wasn't included?? If people
don't use the cable, they can always toss it. I'd
expect more people need it then don't. Once I get the
cable, I'll update this review with how well the
printer works but for now i'm really disappointed.

18 Slouching toward plug and play
You think by now plug and play would mean there wasnt a need to contact tecnical support repeatedly in an effort to get a device to work-especially when you try to run it on windows xp. But i guess hp figures its some of its customers need to be software engineers to get there products to work or spend hours with technical support and get nowhere.
This product makes me believe hp engineers dont know what thyre doing
19 Great Product
Originally, I purchased prints of my digital pics through Kodak.com. After I paid $99 for this printer, I decided to give it a shot with the free photo paper that came with it. My (4x6)prints look better than if I had taken them with a traditional 35mm camera and had the film developed.
20 Excellent Multi function printer
I just bought a second one for my parent in laws. It is great for personal use. Exceptional quality, photo quality print on kodak photo paper, hey if noone even noticed it was printed. The copy feature is excellent and saves trips elsewhere. I homeschool my children so the copy feature is definitely an exceptional tool.
It prints really fast and has built in memory so it isn't taxing your system to print (unlike lexmark in particular). The scanner works great, I've scanned documents, pictures, worksheets, and more. The ability to also do a color copy is really nice. While I've only used it a couple times its still nice to know its there.

Setup is a breeze, the only glitch I had to do is delete the printer from device manager then install the software.
Aligning is a snap, it prints the alignment sheets you put it on the scanner and it aligns itself.

There isn't a more simple printer. Lexmark is cheaper but it doesn't have the memory buffer, is a system resource hog, and
takes forever to print color (despite claims).
I've never seen a canon that worked for any real length of time.
Epson is okay but can't hold a candle to this plus constantly is running into bugs.

Both HP and Lexmark make sturdy reliable printers and I've used both have been pleased. Lexmark's downfall is its time on printing and system resource usage. So this is your best bet for
this price range.

I've been happy and you will be as well.
21 An ordeal to set up, but OK thereafter
I adviced my parents to get this printer, since they were in need of an all-in-one solution to their printing, scanning and copying needs. A little under $100 seemed like a reasonable price to pay for a unit that would do all three. And all was nice and beautiful until the CD that the printer came with wouldn't work, so I decided to download and install the software from the HP site, which was going to take forever, because it was over 340MB in size... I ended up downloading it at work (over a fast connection) and burning a CD with it, and finally setting it up, after three attempts.

Being a technically-inclined person, I found this unit to be all but user friendly. I cannot imagine the frustration of someone with little patience or limited computer knowledge. If that sounds like you, pass on this one. You will remember me if you don't. Even though it's a nice printer/copier/scanner after it's set up, honestly I think it's not worth the effort it took to set up.
22 The worst printer
Do not buy it, it simply do not work, the problem?? The drivers.
go for an epson or lexmark or whatever. Don't waste your time and money.
I know that the people from HP will not recognize it, but they know I am telling you the truth.
It is a shame, how a company that says they are the best, can make a printer with the lower quality control. Again it is a shame.
23 Great if you don't need to print labels
It scans fine (tho slowly) and makes lovely copies. The print quality is great. However, it has a huge problem making labels. They do not align properly most of the time. A sheet of regular paper is OK so it doesn't seem to be a software problem; maybe it has trouble grabbing the paper. Of the three times I've done labels with it, I got them after several attempts the first time, it worked the second time, and this third time it would not align in five attempts. This included attempts with and without regular paper and/or extra label sheets under the label sheets that I was trying to print.

Office Depot had a hard time finding print cartridges for it
24 This little HP does the basics well.
The best feature of this printer is the copying. You can make up to 10 copies, one page at a time, either black and white or color. Given the price, its a nice little addition to the home office. The copies are about 95 percent (subjective) quality of the original.

As far as scanning goes, it's a pretty good scanner. The HP software is fairly intuitive to use and not overburdened by too much functionality.

The print quality is very good, however I've seen faster and very slightly better print quality in dedicated ink-jet printers within this price range. I guess that's a small compromise considering the unit copies and scans as well.

The printer seems to go through ink somewhat quickly, so make sure you pick draft resolution for day to day printing, which looks pretty good anyway. Ink cartridge replacements are cheaper than some other vendors relatively speaking. There are double capacity cartridges that can be bought more economically in packages of two.

As far as photos go, the printer is pretty good but I would recommend a dedicated photo printer or use snapfish.com instead for photo printing.

This unit does not fax. I have a separate fax unit that somebody gave me, so no problem. My computer isn't near a phone line anyway.

The printer is slightly noisy and jiggly in its day to day operation. All told, this unit comes highly recommended at doing the basics well, at a very low price point.
25 You get what you pay
Some of the pages that I have printed do come out a little crooked from time to time but for the price this is still about the best printer you'll find for under 100 dollars.
26 Don't buy it
Printer's quality is bad. It printed everything skewed. The tech support guy could not fix it. Also the printer driver blue screen my machine twice.

Look somewhere else.
27 Fine scanner HORRIBLE printer
It's going back tomorrow. I don't know if it's a glitch or what but it's horrible. It just can't grip my paper. Everything I print is crooked and goes off the page. Some lines are printed crystal clear and others are fuzzy. I've tried plain paper, thick paper, etc. I've adjusted settings. I've aligned cartridges. Oh and let's not forget to mention the paper gets jammed at the end EVERY SINGLE TIME. What a waste of time, energy, and money.
28 HP doesn't do Classic
I've had luck with HP printers in the past. This one prints and scans ok for the low price BUT if you're a Mac user, beware. I use OS X, and the printer worked, but when I tried to print from a Classic app (Photoshop 6) I got an error message. When I contacted HP support I was told that they don't support Classic and that I would have to reboot and print from OS 9 if the app wasn't OS X native. A real pain, as I use Photoshop a lot but have no real need for the upgrades. I think this information should be on the box, but it wasn't. Instead the copy says it is OS X compatible. Classic is part of OS X, and there are a lot of Classic apps still out there.
29 Good Printer, but has its flaws
It is very prone to the paper getting jammed. However, it is still the best all-in-one you can find for such a cheap price.
30 Ok printer compared to others
Update: I went back and bought this printer again. I think it's the best all in one you can get for the price. It still cuts of the sides of whatever I scan if it's placed in a corner, but I can place it in the middle because the scanner area is not sloped(so it wont slide). I bought this for school and I think it's been pretty good once it was installed. Maybe a keeper, but I have a year long guarantee.

I bought this printer from COSTCO for $99. It took a very long time to install. The printing quality is excellent compared to a Lexmark that I just bought. However, I tried to make a copy of something and it doesn't matter where you place the document--the sides of the picture will be cut off! I didn't try placing it in the center though. I just got angry and took the thing back. It also doesn't have faxing capabilities which I don't think is necessary, but it would have been nice. I bought a Lexmark x1155 for $60, and it also cut of the sides of my document and the quality of the picture is horrible compared to the HP. I'll be taking that one back tomorrow. I'm just looking for a decent all in one!! Perhaps I'll go get the HP 1210 and I hope that it will work better.
31 Good All-in-One for the Price
short story - great unit for the price. Great printing and scanning and acceptable copying.

long story - I originally bought this unit on the spur of the moment due to a great deal. It's an HP so I thought it would be great based upon past experience. I got back home, read the other reviewers, and second-guessed my decision. I would have taken it back, unopen, but my college-bound daughter was very excited about the scanning and copying. I'm a long term IT Professional so I decided to give it a try, very hesitantly, on her brand new PC.

Setup was not difficult at all. Clear instructions were included although it clearly says NOT to connect to your computer until you have the software fully loaded. Not sure what happens if you don't read! I did think the sofware installation took quite a while on a brand new, high-end PC, but it didn't give me any issues.

Immediately, my daugher began copying, scanning, editing, and printing. The printing is great quality and would say the same for the scanning. The included sofware allowed her immediately to do editing. Again, she quickly made her favorite picture the background on her PC. I did notice that the cover to the copier has a little give, but I DID only pay $100 for it. Also, it cuts off a small portion of copies, but in my test, it was part of the very bottom URL line of an internet prinout . . . hardly a tragedy. I won't be using this for professional quality copies anyway. The copies were a remarkable likeness of exactly what I copied . . . no graying out occurred.

So, we are quite happy so far. HP may have corrected it's original issues so keep this in mind. I am wondering how long the print cartriges will last. They are somewhat smaller than my HP Photo printer, but not a large concern at this point. I have not yet priced the replacements.

Short advice is this is a good all-around-device for the price.
32 A good value in a very compact package
My experience with this unit is very different from the previous posters.

I bought this nodel because I couldn't find the cheaper 1210 model in stock, and I'm glad I did, (...). It worked flawlessly right out of the box with my Mac PowerBook computer, and I'm very satisfied with the print and copy quality. Even photos look great on plain paper (I haven't tried printing on photo paper yet). It prints somewhat faster than the 1210 model but is otherwise quite similar. The compact size is a real plus, especially when using it with a laptop, as moving it around is very easy.

I rate it at 5 stars, not because it's the best printer/copier/scanner out there, but because its combination of reasonable quality, ease of use, compact size, and affordable price hit the "sweet spot" for me.
33 Software shut computer down
I bought my HP PSC 1315 at COSTCO without researching. It worked nicely when first installed on my Athlon processor with Windows XP home. The next time I turned on the computer the installed HP software immediately kicked my computer into restart. Very frustrating was the blue screen error message that remained up only long enough for an idiot savant to read.

I have spent too much time on other computer equipment that didn't work and after a few quick checks decided that there must be a printer/scanner that will work without hassle and returned this one.

34 Look before you leap
Tried to hook up to a 3yr old Compaq Deskpro EN with windows 2000 professional [could not get program to fully load or configure] & I spent many hours on the phone to HP with NO luck at all.The scanner/copier lid had a lot of play & when I tried to copy a Birth certificate it cut off 1/4in on 3 sides & a 1/2in on the bottom. The only thing I was impressed with was the photo editing abilities. I returned the PSC 1315 for a refund & bought a Cannon MP 370.
