1 2 time failure
Bought the 2175 for $99.00 CAD (after rebate) at Future Shop in Canada. After going through the set up the thing would not power on. I'd get a 'test-system' notice and then nothing. No matter how many times I retried, same thing. HP support says bring it back - it's defective hardware. Bring home my second one. All is nicely installed, but then run into the same problem reported by reviewer Bedfordx...grinding sound and message 'scanner failure'. Had to power off and on and try again...same thing... HP support tells me...bring it back, it's defective hardware problem...It's back for good...I then went with the Lexmark X6170...awesome machine with much better functionality...and it WORKS! ...joe in Canada
2 Not for high quality photo scanning
If you are looking for the convenience of an all-in-one scanner/copier/printer, the HP PSC 2175 might be okay for. If you want to make high quality scans of photos, however, the PSC 2175 will be a big disappointment.

No matter what resolution you choose to scan a photo in, it will come out too contrasty and subtle details of the photo will be lost. The colors come out flat and grayish. There is also visible cross-hatching. The software allows you to make adjustments to brightness and contrast, etc., but the interface is clunky and you can't see how your adjustments have affected the photo until you scan it. I cannot recommend this product for people who are primarily intersted in scanning photos.

Also, the scanner I purchased (by mail) came with some fogging and dust on the inside of the glass and HP customer "service" is a hellish experience (which is only available on weekdays and limited hours on Saturdays).
3 Excellent multifunction printer
Highly recommend this printer. Scan, print (B&W and color photos, graphics and text) are superb. Set up is easy. I experienced no setup problems nor have I had any problems since. Also, I purchased a refurb PSC2175. I recommend considering an HP PSC2175 refurb over new. It comes in an HP box labeled "refurb" with everything packaged as new. Sealed print cartridges, etc. I paid $72 for mine (including shipping). Just make sure that if you go the refurb route, it is "factory" refurbished by HP and not some third party vendor. The HP factory refurbs come with the same warranty as a new PSC2175 and are guaranteed by HP to meet new printer specs. I am very impressed by the quality of the this printer in every area, especially considering the price.
4 Real nice machine
I can't add to what the other reviewers have already said, but this is a really nice machine. The best all in one I have ever owned.
5 Great printer- I'm impressed!
This printer is really fantastic! I mostly use mine to print documents and photographs.
It prints photos on regular copy paper which are so perfect that when I frame them, they truly look like "real" photographs. What a great way to get very inexpensive photos printed, in any size you like!
Additionally, the quality of B&W and color prints are excellent. No complaints at all.
I love that this machine has a copier- it's very, very convenient. No more running to Kinko's for a quick copy of important documents. This does the trick in seconds. I love that.
The scanner is useful, too- for example if you have a photo you want to duplicate. You can just scan it and print as many as you like.
This machine has saved me plenty of time and money, and in that sense it has truly paid for itself.
The black ink cartridge replacement is $19.95 and the color ink cartridge replacement is $35.00, and both are readily available. I wish the black ink cartridge was a little larger, but in the big scheme of things that is a very minor detail.
I can't say enough nice things about this printer. I am glad I bought it.
6 I have discovered the prolem with these printers
I have done my research on reviews about this printer and a lot of people have complained that they couldn't get this printer to work. I think I know what the problem is. The USB port on the back of the printer has 4 metal pins in the center. They look bent which is by design. However, the problem is that it is very easy to bend these pins so that they bend towards the center and don't make contact with the USB cable. This can happen especially with refurbished printers where there has been previous wear and tear on the USB port from prior installations. I had intermittent connection problems and problems setting up this printer at first but after discovering this minor problem I bent the pins outward so that they made a good connection and everything worked! I've been doing IT work for over 8 years so troubleshooting is what I do best. This printer is an excellent deal if you can get it around $100 or less as of 9/29/04. It has very good print quality (very close to color laser quality) once you get it up and running.
7 Very pleased w/ the printer so far
I haven't owned this for long, I'll be the first to admit. But after reading some reviews re: the long installation process I wanted to reassure people on that account. I timed the process from removing it from the box to all features up and running through my computer- 25 min. I don't consider that long at all.

It's very user friendly and gives very good copies and photos. We had the older PSC 750 w/ its photo editing software. I was pleased to see that HP has tweaked the software and improved the "remove red eye" function.

We own a HP computer w/ memory card slots. I think it's one of the best features of the computer. I'm looking forward to being able to use the printer in the same way. No more fussing w/ a USB cable and the software.(...)

8 Horrible printer! You want frustration, buy this printer!
Horrible printer! You want frustration, buy this printer!

I bought this printer last year. Since then, I only have frustration and more frustration trying to use this printer. HP offers one year warranty on this printer. I'd prefer not to have any warranty at all. I've contacted HP tech support and they keep sending (shipping) defective printer after defective printer to me. Not to mention countless hours on the phone trying to solve the problem.
There's a GRINDING sound every time I turn on the printer. It says, align cartridge. The GRINDING sound continues until it says SCANNER failure.

I've always used HP products, but after the experience with this printer, I'll think twice. The funny thing is, before buying this printer I came to this page to read the reviews. I liked it. Now I am stuck with this problem because I found the reviews helpful. What's going on? How come it works for you and not for me?

HTH,
a sincere reviewer!

9 good choice
This is a very nice printer/scanner/card reader. I did a bit of research before buying this unit and am very pleased at the results. It does a very nice job for the money. I got it even cheaper in the store.
10 Excellent printer
Recommended this unit & set it up for my mother-in-law. The print quality is great, and the printer detects paper type automatically (no more mistaken settings on photo paper!!). The card reader is a boon, especially since her old card reader stopped working after an OS upgrade. The supplied software is a little creaky on OS X but it still is an incredible value for the money.
11 Goes through ink like CRAZY!!!
I upgraded to this device because i thought my HP Deskjet 882C (about 4 years old) was getting tired and needed replacement. Boy was I wrong. The PSC 2175 has almost exactly the same quality, though the print speed is much faster. There are two major annoyances. (1) even using HP Bright White Inkjet paper, the printer (sometimes) pulls several pages into the device at a time. Nothing I do can seem to stop this. Tried different paper, tried flipping it over. HP tech support never emailed or called. oh well. (2) I got the printer on March 1st. I print a couple pages a week... In fact, I haven't even gone through 1 package of 500 sheets of paper. It tells me "the black cartridge is almost out of ink." You've got to be kidding. I've printed a couple hundred pages and it wants more ink? The 882C could go almost a year on my print load with one set of cartridges. The 2175 is asking for more after 3 months. It's nice that it notifies me that it's low so I can order another one, but if it continues at this rate, I can't afford to buy over a hundred dollars of cartidges a year. In summary, I wish I had my 882C back... This printer got very good reviews, but I have been very disappointed with it!
12 It jammed the first day we got it and would not unjam
This printer jammed the first day we purchased it and would not unjam, even after the paper was removed. The manual that came with the printer and the online support were terrible.
13 This is a great value!
I followed the set up instructions very carefully to avoid the problems others had. It went without a glitch until I rebooted and got a black screen instead of my desktop. I shut down the laptop and disconnected the USB. Remember to turn the printer off before rebooting. When I started the laptop again, all was fine.
So far everything is working great: scans photos fast and they look perfect even on regular paper, printed business docs, made copies, all come out great. I have yet to try printing photos from a Smart Media card.
This machine is so easy to operate and doesn't take much room at all - I definitely recommend it.
14 Printer does not work. Support was horrible
I purchased this printer for my mother. This was my 5th HP printer purchase. I was horribly disappointed. I followed all software installation instructions and after installing the driver my pointer would freeze periodically. If I would print the pointer would be fine. Also with the printer off everything was okay. With the printer turned on and idle nothing would work. I looked all over the web for solutions to this problem. I updated the firmware on the printer directly. I also called HP support and they told me to defrag my drive. I defraged it and the same problem occurred.

I also found sometimes when I would connect the printer it would freeze my computer all together and it wouldn't respond to any keystrokes or mouse commands.

I am sick of outsourced support that just recommends doing stuff to buy time so they can get you off the phone. They were completely unable to solve my problem and I returned the printer back to Amazon.

I am a software engineer and know the symptoms probably are an interrupt problem with communication between the printer and the computer. Beware of this printer and its horrible software.

15 Good Printer. Bad scanner.
As a printer, this machine suits my home needs well. It is fast, decent quality, and the ink is fairly inexpensive. My only complaint is that the scanner is very poor, even by flatbed scanning standards. The parallel port Mustek scanner I bought at Wal*Mart five years ago does a better job than the 1275.
16 HP Provides Excellent Support
When my HP PSC2175 arrived, I immediately set it up and could not get it to work. Being fairly literate with technology, I was pretty sure it was not something I was doing wrong, so I called the HP technical support number included with the accompanying written information.

I was connected to a technician quickly. He was very patient and knowledgeable and ran me through a number of checks to see what was wrong. It turned out that I had to return the unit (yes, a bummer), but HP made that easy. They sent me a new one within 5 days. All I had to do was set up the new one, put the old one in the box the new one came in, and slap on the UPS label to return it.

While I would have preferred to avoid the above hassle, HP was exceedingly professional and responsive. And, my replacement unit works great. I love it!

17 Outstanding!!
I bought this printer because of a need my wife had for a fast color printer and a lack of available office surfaces. I had an old scanner as well, but decided to replace it with this unit as well, and get a coppier out of the deal as a bonus. I wasn't really prepared for the photo printing quality that came out of this thing! The package I bought came with a sample pack (11 sheets or so) of photo quality paper (but no photo ink cartridge). We now have scanned reprints, enlargements, and reductions of our wedding pictures framed in our living room as I type, and no one can tell that they aren't professionally printed. It's simply astounding. I didn't buy this machine to print photos and so I haven't bought a photo ink cartridge yet, but I probably will now, though I can't imagine how much better the quality of prints could possibly be.

If you're not into printing photos for framing at home, no problem, this printer is fantastic at being a simple inkjet printer. It's very fast printing color documents, and extremely fast at plain black text (faster than my samsung laser). It also does something that I've wanted inkjets to do for a long time: self alignment. It has some sort of light (laser or otherwise???) detection device inside that allows it to print a page of lines and patterns, scan them for alignment and adjust itself for optimal printing. Gone are the days of pinting out a sheet, squinting to decide whether line 13 or 14 is the best and then typing the numbers into a form in a dialouge box. It uses the same amount of ink and paper as the old method, but with no demands on you. I was kindof dreading aligning the cartridges, so when it did it on it's own, I just about fell out of my chair!!

I also love the fact that it has a multiple type memory card reader built in. You just plug your memory card from your digicam or whatever into the printer and suddenly you have an extra drive letter on your machine which you can write to and from fairly quickly.

The scanner is also fantastic. You put something on the flatbed, you hit the scanner button on the printer, it gets a list of photo-editing software from your computer and asks which program you'd like to send the scan to, you select one and hit the color or b&w start button. That's it! It's such a great feature to be able to send the scan to PhotoShop without even having to touch the computer.

In closing I'll just tell you that this is my first electronics review on this site. I don't write about things that I just got (bought this printer around 2 months ago, and have used it heavily since) or that are so-so in quality. I was totally blown away by the quality of this printer, especially for the price they're asking. The more expensive versions include a color LCD screen for computer-less photo printing and a fax machine.... so pick your model to suit your needs... but pick an HP PSC 2100 model of some type... if they're all like this one you're gonna love it.

18 Bad HP Customer Service--now includes an update 1 year later
The printer arrived with a one inch wide semi-opaque film on the underside of the scanning window--it almost looked like mold or some other "growth" from sitting in storage too long. This film is next to the parking location of the scanning mechanism. I thought I could take it apart and clean it but found out it was permanently sealed. HP offered to replace the defective printer. Shame on HP for sending out a refurbished unit (it was actually labeled refurbished)! The refurbished unit was worse! The underside of the scanning glass was entirely smeared and the top side of the scanning window contained a deep scratch. I sent the refurbished unit back. Edge to edge copying is not performed--approximately one half inch is missed around the edges of the paper. Printing quality is good. Media readers are reliable. Windows XP and Linux friendly. This printer is a good concept. I just wish HP would follow through with decent customer service.

P.S. I am now noticing how many refurbished units are available for sale (take a look at the "Used and New" offerings under this listing, for example).

An update one year and one month after purchase. . .

The printer has now stopped feeding paper. I took off the back "cover" that is used to clear paper jams and cleaned the rubber rollers thinking that there was paper buildup on them. Hardly any buildup at all. I cleaned them anyway, hooked it back up, and it still would not feed paper. My one-year warranty ran out one month ago (how convenient for HP!). You guessed it, I will not be purchasing another HP product.
19 Great
I just recently bought my hp psc 2175 and I love all the features it has. I have printed a lot of pictures and the quality is great. The digital camera slots is the one feature that I really like. It is also great to copy without the computer on. I only wish the cartridges were larger. HP is a good product.
20 Great Product
This is a great product. It was easy to install and use. It prints, scans and copys great. I purchased this product because of the great reviews it has gotten and can now testify to it.
21 A pleasant surprise
I've found buying printers very frustrating over the years. I had a poor experience years ago with an HP and an equally frustrating time with a Xerox Multifunction more recently. Both were top down and both ate paper. After too many months of feeding one sheet at a time, it was time for a change. Was reluctant to go with an ink jet as I've only bought laser before. Spent months looking and eventually decided on this model vs $... more for the 2210.

It's a pleasure. The design is excellent. Scanning, copying and printing are more than acceptable. The machine is suprisingly quiet. For those of you who are on the verge, take the plunge. If you're going to fax frequently, go for the 2210.

Congratulations to HP on this vastly improved design.

22 Even easy for Me!
I am no computer Geek, or Goru for thay matter, just a stay @ home, homeschool mom. With all the copying and printing we do for school and projects, this was a great buy. I turned in my old HP printer and scanner for this one machine. All we did was drop in the disk and follow the simple directions. The photo software I already had was compatible with the new HP2175 software. Photos downloaed from our Camcorder of fieldstrips come out clear and crisp and the printer is quick and quiet. The whole system is easy enough for my 12 yr.old to use.
We Love it!
23 Excellent print quality. Supports 4 memory cards for photos
Excellent printer. After some comparison shopping, I found this printer was the best value for the price.

It's an "all-in-one" device that does printing, scanning and coping (color or black/white). It hooks up to your PC or notebook.

The print quality is excellent, especially for photos (I was pleasantly surprised with the incredible quality of the color photos - you'll be able to print color photos just as good as the camera store)

The copier is excellent and I especially like the fact it's a "flat-bed" style copier/scanner. There are some Copiers that only let you copy a piece of paper, but this device is like a normal office copy machine (but much, much smaller) where you can lift the lid up and place a book on top of it, which is useful if you need to copy a page from a book you own, like your cookbook or hiking book. I can now keep my cookbook in good condition and don't have to carry a heavy hiking or touring book on a trip - I just bring a copy of the pages I need for a trip. I recently found this very useful when touring a city. In fact, it was so useful that I'm going to look into eBooks for my iPAQ for trips. With this printer, you can scan a page from a hardcopy book in order to get it into your hand-held (by scanning it into your PC and then moving it to your hand-held). Though I would prefer to buy eBooks software for my iPAQ that has this information organized like a library.

The scanner works very well. It's especially useful if you want to scan something important into your PC to save forever. I tend to collect a lot of papers, so this scanner really helps me cut down on the amount of space I'm was using to save hardcopy papers. This scanner lets me toss out papers I would normally be saving, so no more growing heaps of piles of papers on my desk. I scan papers into my PC for storage and then toss the paper out.

The unit is conveniently small, and yet it can copy up to A4 size paper (which is larger than legal paper). Sizewise, it fits nicely on my small one-drawer filing cabinet where I used to keep my LaserJet 6L, and there's still room for my large conferencing phone.

Now that I have a copier, I no longer have to run to work or Kinko's to make a copy of my tax forms. Too many times I've left important personal papers at our copier at work (embarrassing!)

After buying the product, I discovered it has a really neat feature that I now use all the time: it supports four different types of memory cards (CompactFlash, SD, SmartMedia, and Memory Stick.)

I have a digital camera and an HP iPAQ 2215, which both use CompactFlash card. This means, I can take my CompactFlash card from either my camera or iPAQ and pop it into the printer and print photos without bothering with the PC. It's fast & easy. I really like it.

My iPAQ 2215 acts like a portable photoalbumn sometimes, so it's nice to be able to print photos out by simply popping the CompactFlash card into the printer. This printer is a great gift for your Mom & Dad if they like to get a lot of photos from you. When you visit your parents, you can show them your photos stored on your iPAQ and print out the ones they want by popping the compact flash into the printer. It's as easy as that and it's photo quality too.

You can upload your photos from either an iPAQ or camera to your PC by simply popping the compact flash into the printer and pressing Scan to PC. I find this useful when I want to have a large view of my photos stored on my iPAQ - I move them to my PC from the iPAQ by popping the compact flash into the printer. I find this easier than hooking my camera up to the PC (where the photos originate.) (I don't always have my camera plugged into my PC, so find it easier to pop the CompactFlash into the printer rather than hooking up the camera.)

It's a very easy printer to use and to install - just pop the CD in and click "okay" and plug in the cord.

A few small things I wish it had (though, no other printers on the market seem to have this either, so it's minor): I wish I could plug my Creative Labs camera directly into the front of the printer. I also wish iPAQ 2215 could plug directly into the front of the printer so I could print the photos or files directly stored on my iPAQ. (But this isn't critical because I can do it anyway by just popping the iPAQ's compactflash into the printer). But one thing I wish it had: I would love to be able to plug a Memory ThumbDrive (by USB2) into the front of the printer in order to directly print photos stored on the ThumbDrive. (A thumbdrive is a tiny stick that fits onto a key chain - you can plug into any PC by a USB2 connection - it's like a miniature, portable hard drive.) Basically, all three of these ideas would involve HP designing a USB2 input into the front of their printers (something I would think they could easily do, but for some reason, no printer on the market does this yet.) These three ideas are items no printer seems to do, so it's minor. And I can print from my ThumbDrive by simply plugging it into my PC or laptop.

After doing comparison shopping, I found this all-in-one printer, copier, and scanner to be the best device on the market and it's very inexpensive for all you get. I'm really happy with this product and just love it!

This is an excellent printer, copier, and scanner - you can't go wrong with it.

Hope my comments have been informative.
