1 worst peice of junk imaginable
This unit is terrible. Paper stutters, jams, spits out two at a time or worse one and a half at a time, printer tries to print on high ink setting no matter what the preset shows, fax answers the phone no matter what settings, total ink, paper, label, time waster. freemusic@billkahler.com
2 Other reviews confirm a very high failure rate
My own experience with the psc 2210 has been remarkably similar to the worst that other reviewers have described: repeated failures, comnpany refusal to stand by its products, poor technical support. What has struck me is how high a percentage of reviewers have given the 2210 one star out of five - and that seems grudging for many of them!
Reliability is the most important consideration for me, and, in my experience, the 2210 is simply not reliable. Given the low expectations we have gotten used to for consumer electronics, that in itself is not shocking. What DOES disturb me is the "We've got your money, so we're happy even if you're not" attitude that seems to go all the way to the top of the HP customer service organization. As a result, HP, a company I used to admire, is off my list.
3 No problems so far.
I bought this printer when it first came out, I'm not sure how long that is maybe about two years ago and as far have had no problems with it. You can make copies and fax without it even being hooked up to a computer. I use it fairly often about three times a week and I think it is very easy to use. The pictures I have printed out on it are great quality. (I always use HP ink and high quality photo paper)It has never jammed up, faxing and scanning are easy, the ppm speed is decent and you can print pictures straight from any type of media card. Overall it is a great all-in-one at a great price. For the people who are having problems with printing and jamming, I would recommend using better paper, HP ink and you also have to take the time out and clean the printer like it tells you to in the manual.
4 Good printer, but does not last long
I purchased this printer almost a year to the day that it broke down. It did everything that I needed it to do, however, it jammed and no longer will initialize. Because of the cost of repairing out of warranty, I will probably purchase a different product rather than repair this one. I spent a week trying on my own to repair it,and then discovered my warranty had run out. Hewlett Packard has online help, which was not able to fix my problem either. My last printer was Hewlett Packard and I never had a problem with it. Because they are building everything with cheap plastic now, I am disappointed in my 2210xi printer. I used to brag to everyone about how wonderful my first printer was, and now I am bummed with this one.
5 Good quality and speed, poor durability and stability.
I do graphics design only in my spare time, so I didn't even put that much of a workload on my HP PSC 2210 -- maybe a dozen scans every two to three weeks, 10 black-and-white pages a week, and maybe 10-20 colour pages a week. I used the fax maybe twice or three times, and the photocopying function five or six times.
Given this light a workload, this thing should not have been malfunctioning as early as it was. But barely a year after I got it -- a year! -- the printer was on its last legs. After one paper jam, the scrolling became inaccurate and I couldn't get the 2210 to print one simple, black-and-white Word document without all the lines going out of alignment. Realigning the cartridges didn't help; it was the physical scrolling mechanism.
Even before this, I never liked the 2210 much. It printed fast and photos look pretty good, but the software was clunky and there was something wrong with the way the software interacted with the printer -- two out of 10 print jobs would freeze up midway. While most printing software allows you to continue the job and finish it, this one did not -- it scrolls the half-finished printing page out, then resends the entire job. When you're talking about a colour-intensive graphics-design job, that's a lot of ink wasted. I'd thought it was the USB connector and switched to two different USB hubs, then plugged the USB cable direct into the computer, but the problem did not alleviate. And it's probably not because of my applications, because Word documents froze up just as often as complex Photoshop documents. And while two out of 10 doesn't look bad on paper, it adds about 50 per cent to the time you need to print out, say, a 120-page screenplay -- effective negating the printer's speed and then some.
Buyers beware.
6 It's Great When It Works, Lousy when you need support!
The features on the hp psc 2200 series all-in-one are really wonderful, when they work. After about 6 months, problems started to arise. The first was the photo card getting stuck and not releasing. Called support and went through all kinds of instructions to no avail. Got cut off from India somehow and immediately called back. I think I got someone in the USA because there was no accent and was immediately put through to a technician who argreed that the machine was faulty and to please return it when the "reconditioned" replacement arrived.
The next machine worked for about 3 months and then started having problems, all lights flashing, refusing to do anything.
Talked to India again, after trying all sorts of things, nothing worked and I was told that they would replace it, BUT then they said that the machine was out of warranty and was registered to someone else (from the serial # info). I explained that it was a reconditioned replacement and still couldn't get any satisfaction. I finally asked for a supervisor and got the same song and dance, finally he asked for my receipt to be forwarded to them, I explained that I didn't have the receipt, they said get it over the internet and print it out, I said, "HOW" The printer won't work. Finally, after me going into hysterics, they agreed to send ANOTHER replacement. I ended up returning it unopened as my son came and found the problem and fixed it.
Since then, I have had more problems with the FAX, but now they
have mysteriously cleared up! My warrenty will be up in about a week or so and after reading about how one consumer was told that he would be charged $58 to talk to a technician, I am getting nervous. As I said, great machine, but lots of problems and lousy support. I would suggest that HP consider getting their support back to the good old USA. I would never buy one again.
7 Buggy Software
This product comes with the WORST software. I've had to reinstall it at least 5 times by now! Don't waste your time!
8 Strike 3 for HP
After having an HP computer that has caused me nothing but headaches, a HP digital camera that froze up on me within a week of its purchase, now I had this HP product completely die on me after owning it only 1 1/2 years--From the start, the darn thing would never scan--HP tech support (farmed out to INDIA) was worthless-told me it was a software issue-and one of their suggestions was to upgrade to Windows XP--which I had to do later anyway as the explorer browser on my HP computer got corrupted and wouldnt work--see a pattern here? I DO!!--Will NEVER buy another HP product again---the estimate to get this thing fixed was $195-- a circuit board costing near $150 being the prime item needed--purchase price was $277 a year and a half ago--not much point repairing it--newer and better all in ones are available for less now--just make sure when buying one to NOT buy those marked HP.
9 Beware of HP Customer support
I had this printer for about 10 months when it started having problems. It worked well before that. I called HP tech support and I got these people in Inda who had me try different things. They gave me a number to fax my information and case number to because the machine was still under warranty -- but then I got no response after that.
10 Hunk of Junk and bad support
I have had this printer 14 months when it just stopped working. When I turn the machine on, all it does is blink lights. When I called HP support they said it would cost $55 to talk to a technician. They would do nothing at all to help unless I paid more money because the warranty was up (12 months). They did not tell me if the machine was fixable or not. I already paid $300 and do not want to pay any more for this hunk of junk. I will never buy another HP product. HP does not support their products.
11 Excellent machine
I have had my 2210 for over a year now and it has performed like a champion. I've had no issues with this printer what-so-ever. Print quality is excellent; color copies are excellent. I have also used the copier function to make color copies of photographs and they are near perfect to the original photo! Having the memory card slots is a huge plus and I've had no compatibility problems using the various brands of memory cards I have.
This printer deserves a 10 rating in my book!
12 DISAPPOINTMENT
Like others, I was initially impressed with the ease of installation and use and quality of the printing with this machine. I bought this multifunction machine as a gift for a family member, who is not very computer savvy; however, this would also be something that I could use when borrowing her computer. Unfortunately, after I bought it, she let it sit around the house until she got a new computer and a new computer desk. I personally opened the box and hooked it up for her this past July 4th. This item was used infrequently, generally as a printer. The only time it was used as a fax machine, on February 20th, it did well--only to die two days later. Now when trying to turn it on, it makes a horrible noise, and it looks like there is a problem with the belt drive. After a period of time, a message reading "Scanner Failure to Initialize" comes up then asks you to turn it off and back on. You can't use it to do anything. A call to the Customer (No) Service rep also resulted in frustration. Their records indicate that this item was purchased in Nov. 2002, and so the warranty is up. I can tell you for a fact, as I told the rep, the box containing this item was opened and this machine was first used on July 4, 2003 (that is the day I went out an bought the USB cable for it and hooked it up). So, we also have an expensive piece of junk that is not under warranty based on the date of purchase(but in terms of use is brand new). I personally spoke to the Customer Service rep who essentially called me a liar, saying that this machine was nearly 2 years old and that if there had been a defect in its workmanship within the first year, when it was new, it would have been under warranty. Well, this machine was within its first year of use--brand new, out of the box. Now it would cost more to repair it than to buy a new one. The rep also invited me to upgrade! If their product is so shoddy that it couldn't survive 8 months of infrequent use, why would I want another one and sink more money into this black hole! Given their lack of responsiveness and poor consumer relations, I'll not buy another HP product.
13 Top of the line printer quality and ease of use.
A great piece of machinery for the home office, easy to set up and indespensible to have around the house. Need a copy for the kid's school? Done. Scan those monthly statements for backup? Done. Print some photos? Done. Send that fax to your doctor? Done. I absolutely love this machine, it's time saving features allow me to tkae of all my small business needs right from my home office without having to run to Kinkos. HP does it again and their customer support is as always, top notch.
I highly recommend this printer for anyone who wants the home office to get a little more self-sufficient.
14 Good Printer
This is a very good and easy to use printer. Has Fax, printing, scanning and copys all in one. Pictures turn out nice and very nice quality and look to it. Got this in April 2003 and still works well. Highly Recomended. 4 stars- It is pricey though.
15 quit after one year
I liked the printer until it quit after a year and two months it shut off and it wouldn't come back on. I called hp and they told me to get it fixed, but when I called to get it fixed I was told that it was considered disposable and it would cost more to fix it than it was worth. I called hp 5 more times just to be told that there was nothing they would do to help me since my warranty was up, even though it was only up by two months. I now own a three hundred dollar plastic paper weight.
16 never again!
we have had so many problems with this printer....and their product support is awful...we continually have to shut down our whole system in order for the printer to work...then after minutes it won't print, we downloaded a new driver, took 8 hours to download, thought that would solve the problem....not on your life!!!!
never again will we buy another hp....
17 Major Installation Issues, Incompetent HP Support
First of all, I am not a novice with computers, and I have never had a major installation issue with any peripheral until this one. I have the latest version of Internet Explorer including all updates, WindowsME with all critical updates installed including the latest Windows Installer, I have a 1.2 processor, 384 RAM, and an 80GB hard drive...much more than HP says is needed to successfully install this product. I followed the directions to the letter, and the product seemed to install perfectly. At the end of the installation, there is a prompt to reboot. After the restart, the Fax Setup Wizard is supposed to appear and then a congratulations on the successful installation of the product. However, no matter how many times I installed (after uninstalling), the final part of the installation does not take place. Please Note: There is no option to cancel the installation during the process. Also Note: To uninstall, you must go through Add/Remove Programs AND a DOS uninstall utility. If you do not, you will leave large, useless files on your hard drive. Anyway, HP referred me to Compaq who referred me back to HP.(Interesting that HP and Compaq merged, but are maintained totally separately). Compaq charged me $30, even though my HP is still under warranty, they wouldn't talk to me without a credit card number. After days and days of HP "Support" (I hate to call it that), I have had to reformat my hard drive because after so many attempts at installing and uninstalling, my OS became unstable. HP sent me a replacement and had me send my product in for "repair". The replacement did not come with replacement software and I had exactly the same problem with the installation. HP sent me an updated install disc. Guess what? Same problem. The error messages that I get are not even listed on their web site even though if I use Google or Yahoo I see complaints for the error messages associated with this HP product. This is my first and last HP. Thank goodness I purchased a two-year warranty. I plan to return it asap. I am by no means an expert with peripherals, but I have installed various pieces of hardware including hard drives, modems, sound cards, etc. over the years and have experience with over 100 software titles. I have never had a serious glitch in installing software until now. This product seems like it would have been a great peripheral. I thought I was buying a pretty decent name as HP has been around for a long time. If you have any other choice in all-in-onces that you are considering, almost anything is likely to work better than this product...at least the support will probably be better.
18 Great Printer For Photos - Other Functions Lack Speed..
This printer prints wonderful photos and the proof sheet option is very useful! I must say I no longer need to go to the photo shop for any printing or editing of my digital pictures! Got Copy?...Set up to make a copy is quite simple...If you need your copy in a hurry..don't bother with this printer..You will spend more time waiting than copying. I replaced my HP flatbed scanner with this unit and am wishing I still had my scanner with the copy feature..Needs improvement!
19 Check the model #. Is it also a fax machine?
I think the reviewer mentioning the Walmart price of one hundred and something did not notice that the printer advertised is the 2210 without the fax function. I almost did not catch this myself. If that is not the case. Nevermind. Now, I must say, the 2210v is a great printer, a great fax machine, and a pretty good scanner. That is all.
20 I like mine
I'm running windows 98, and i'm not having any problems with it at all. The only thing I found out is that you can buy one at WalMart for $129.00. Yes it's true. It was $148.88.
21 HP 2210 for $...
While simply browsing my local Target store for a particular Lexmark printer, scanner, copier (around $... everywhere else) I happened up on the HP PSC 2210 ALL-IN-ONE. ON CLEARANCE, REGULARLY $... I couldn't believe, naturally I grabbed it up and could not be happier. Photos print beautifully. My digital camera takes good pictures, but this printer makes them great.
22 Low end computers beware
I am running a Dell XPS T450 at 450 MHz with 96Mb RAM (which meets the minimum requirements, although the software did alert me that my level of RAM was not enough for optimal performance) and Windows 98.
The software kept freezing at 81% during installation which prompted a call to HP support. After a very very long call, a FedEx'ed CD from HP with new software and some Google searches, I found out that this is not uncommon among users with low end or old computers. The installation never really finishes. All I could do was force quit the installation application and restart the computer.
Most functions worked -- the scanner scanned to the computer, the memory card bays in the front loaded to the computer and I could erase memory cards while in the bays from the computer. The copier and fax machines worked well, but they are not routed through the CPU to function. All that did not work was the print function, which is still the most important function.
The software is a little primative as well.
The print quality was very good, especially when printing onto photo paper, and the option to print directly from memory cards is fantastic.
If it wasn't for the installation issues, I would definately keep this machine.
23 Hobbled by horrid software
Watch out, this unit comes with > 160 MB of software. What are the odds of that working reliably? Besides having a poorly integrated interface, the software doesn't work reliably under Windows. I've had to uninstall/reinstall all the software a couple of times, swap USB ports, power everything off and back on. And this is just to print a sheet of paper!
I would recommend sticking with a simpler printer with simple, well-integrated software.
24 Great Quality for the price
Using for copying only. Execellent for BW copying. Great for color copying but too slow. For 5 or 6 color copies its fine. I am amazed at the quality this machine produces copying color prints. I have taken standard 4x6 prints and enlarged to 8x10. It is nearly impossible at times to tell which is a copy and which is a original. It helps to start with a good quality original.
25 A Great Basic MFD
I'm very pleased with this purchase. It was a replacement for a 8-year-old MFD, and it has fulfilled all of my goals. No, it's not a top-of-the line printer/copier/scanner/fax, but frankly I didn't need one. I do just 5-10 copies a week and a scan or fax here and there. Every once and awhile, I use it as a backup for my laser printer. For my needs, it's great. I love that I can turn off the fax or set it so it "listens" for fax tones before answering. The copy quality is actually superior to the local library's machines. Installation was flawless.
26 Three different stores...three strikes you are out !!!
I purchased three of these over the weekend at different local electronics' superstores here in Austin. Each one had a slightly different paper handling problem and all three of them had the same problem faxing.
First problem:
Let's begin with the faxing problem. When entering a fax number using the printer's keypad it would not accept a "pause" in the sequence of numbers when dialing with a phone card. I called HP support and the said they were aware a few of these printers had this problem but three out of three!
Second problem:
Each printer had different paper handling problems!
With standard letter size paper I would get a "paper to narrow" error message and the message would not clear until I turned off the printer. One printer would intermittently error out with an "empty paper tray" message even with varying amounts of paper in the input tray! Two of the printers would paper jam after printing less than 10 pages. I thought the paper feed problem might be due to my paper so when I returned the printers to the stores where I purchased them they were able to duplicate these same problems.
One of the store technicians said this printer model has a very high return rate
Conclusion:
After wasting hours of my time I finally gave up on this HP printer (and HP in general). I then consulted a consumer magazine for just an inkjet printer and I bought a Canon i550 which is their top rated printer. Tip: When deciding on a printer, to buy, also consider the cost of printing. HP uses small inkjet cartridges The Canon i550 printing cost is nearly half the printing cost of this HP printer. Buy the way, the i550 worked perfectly out of the box, no problems and the Canon printer drivers are more modern than HP's printer drivers! I hope you find this information helpful.
27 Manufacturer's defect
If you don't mind that this product is missing a prong that goes on the back of the front panel cover, but otherwise works great, than go ahead and buy this product. It works great other than that. But,for me personally, I am frustrated with HP whom I've contacted twice already about the problem and still keep getting sent the same defected cover twice already through the mail.I even went to Target where I bought it and had the manager opened three other boxes and they were all missing the same prong on it and even she said it was a defect. For the price that I paid, I feel that I should receive a product that is in perfect condition without any defects.Especially since it's brand new.I'm seriously thinking of returning mine if they don't fix the defect this time. So, use caution when buying this product.
28 This is the worst printer I ever owned!
This printer constantly has paper jams, which are easy to clear but quite a nuisance. For every 10 page document I print, I have to get at least 3 of them out of a jam, and then go back and reprint those pages. Also, it's the slowest printer on earth! Even when I switch it to black ink only, low ink drying time, etc., it still is like molasses. I have had unbelievably bad luck with HP, so maybe it's just me.
29 Dell 8200 with XP BEWARE!!!!
I bought the HP 2210xi all in one and it was a nightmare to use. It never installed properly. The software went OK but the hardware never recognized. When I contacted HP support via a non-(800) number, they were unable to assist me after an hour and forty-five minutes. Another friend purchased this same product and had similiar problems but eventually got the printer to work. However, there is a constant warning icon on the taskbar that never goes away and the "safely uninstall hardware" icon is constantly present. Under device manager the "?" icon is present. She, too, uses a Dell 8200 with XP. HP believes there is either a problem with the Dell chipset or the inability of XP to allow their software to write to the registry. I have tried all the patches and updates and re-configured the registry but to no avail. I am quite computer savvy and yet this product's installation (which has a very user friendly and easy to understand setup guide) eludes me. Sounds like a great purchase for the money and decent specs. but not fully compatible with a Dell 8200 running XP Home Edition. The customer support did try their best and apologized but this was a long distance and quite expensive phone call. Just BEWARE before you purchase. If you do a search for this product on Google's newsgroups (which I should have done before my purchase) you will see that many other people had this same problem and never resolved it, either thru contacting Microsoft, HP, Dell or all. I am still looking to purchase an all in one and I am open to any suggestions.
30 Shockingly Good
My impression of "all-in-one" devices was that they did everything 'OK' but nothing really that good. I've been extremely happy with the 2210 in that it has exceeded my expectations in every way. I'm running it with Mac OS X, the printer gives great results on documents, and digital photos look quite good as well. I've done a few test scans and was shocked at how good the results were. Fax and copier.....great stuff, in fact I had a hard time believing my eyes when I did the first couple color copies on this unit. And the ability to put my Digital Photo media cards into the printer, print out a "contact sheet" of all images on the card, then mark the images I want to print out full size, place the sheet back in to be scanned and then have the desired images pop out of the printer.....great stuff. I saw a few negative reviews before buying this and almost backed off; specifically comments about paper jams...I've used it daily for the past two months and have yet to have a jam. I'm glad I saw past those complaints and grabbed it.
31 Impressive little printer (and scanner, copier, fax)
Update:
I have had this for a year now, and still find it to be the best printer/copier I could ever ask for. The printouts are beautiful, and I do a LOT of baby pictures on photo paper. The copier doesn't interrupt the computer which means my wife can continue playing games when I need a quick copy of a contract or latest baby photo. I've used the scanner very little, and had some color correlation issues, but they seemed to be software related. (A digital camera is more convienient as a picture scanner anyways). The card reader does not read the new Pro version of Memory Stick, so I had to buy a card reader with the latest camera.
Original review:
I bought this a week ago, and am blown away. The printout pictures are incredibly sharp. It is quiet and fast. Text looks much sharper than my old Epson Stylus Photo. I've never had a problem with an HP printer, and so far this one has not disappointed me one bit.
32 Almost everything you need
The HP PSC 2210 Multifunction is a compact printer/scanner/copier/fax that handles all tasks well. Photos come out looking great, printouts can be printed in draft mode to save ink, and the copier is slow but functional -- unless you have huge stacks of collated copies to make. I haven't put the scanner to great use yet, but the few tests I've run look promising. As a nifty extra feature, you can insert various digital camera memory cards directly into the printer and either print out photos directly or transfer them to your computer. This is extremely handy if you don't want an extra wire hanging out of your computer for your camera.
The two major drawbacks to the 2210 are that the ink is terribly expensive and that the machine is not easy to use across a home network. Over the long run, this machine will cost a pretty penny, but its convenience is well worth the ongoing cost. The networking problem is more serious for those with more than one machine at home. Using a hub or buying a print server will likely allow you to print across the network; scanning is a little more dubious.
For those looking for an excellent printer that can also double as a scanner and simple fax and copier, the 2210 is an excellent choice. For the relatively few advanced home users with more sophisticated needs, this machine may end up frustrating you as you push it to its limits. Too bad, because it is almost perfect.
33 Great value at twice the price.
This is by far the best All-in-One for the home on the market today. Since buying it, I've stopped printing digital photos from my PC - the memory card reader and Proof Sheet function just makes it too easy to print directly from the camera - any digital camera.
The photo quality using 4 inks is great - it's all I usually use. Buying the optional photo cartridge to make it a 6-ink printer makes the print quality indistinguishable from film prints as well as any other printer on the market.
34 HP psc 2210 All-In-One
Have owned this machine for one month and I could not be happier. It is tremendous high quality in every respect. I would recommend this machine for anyone who has a need to print high-quality color photos and any other color images. Bravo HP!
35 HP got it right
Every feature of this machine seems to be fine tuned. The faxes we receive look like a laser print. The text comes out clearer than my xxxxx laser printer. The card reader is at least 20 times faster than the serial cable that came with my Olympus digital camera. Scanning is fast, clear, and easy to set up. The printing software is intuitive and easy to use (but basic). Sending multi-page faxes is easy. I really feel that I got a lot for a very decent price.
36 Six Color Printing is Great. Get the PSC 2110 Instead!
I bought this PSC 2210 all-in-one as an upgrade to my trusty HP 950 in order to get HP's new six-color, borderless printing. The six-color printing (accomplished by trading out the black cartridge for another three-color unit) is great. It's every bit as good as what I get from my HP 7550 Photosmart printer - for both text and color photos. Unfortunately, borderless printing can only be performed when photos are sent from a PC -- and not when printing directly from a memory card. If I had known this before hand, I probably would've purchased the less [spendy] PSC 2110 instead -- and gone without the extra cost of the PSC 2210's memory card reading feature.
As background, the PSC 2210 and 2110 are identical units except for the built-in card reader which allows the PSC 2210 to print directly from a memory card -- either by selecting the photo's number in the LCD menu, or by "bubbling in" a proof sheet and scanning it, after which the PSC 2210 will output all of the selected photos automatically. Unfortunately, since neither method will print without borders, I've found myself by-passing the card reader entirely - and outputting my photos almost exclusively from my PC!
As a positive, PC World magazine (in their November, 2002 issue) has verified HP's claim of a 73 year photo life when using HP's Premium Plus photo paper. Since archiving my photos is an important issue to me, I found this news to be very reassuring.
In terms of general capabilities, the PSC 2210 is also an excellent color and black & white copier. The scanner's resolution is good enough to make e-mail quality images, but inadequate for producing higher definition photo enlargements. (I don't use the fax machine so I won't comment here.) One of the most outstanding improvements of the PSC 2210, though, is its much lower profile, which gives the unit a sleeker and more stylish appearance on my desk. This was made possible by the six-color system's shorter ink tanks, and by eliminating the dedicated 4" x 6" paper tray found on the HP 950. Snapshot paper is now fed through the regular paper tray -- by adjusting the width of the paper guide accordingly.
If you're in the market for a new all-in-one, HP's new six-color printing system is fantastic! But for borderless prints -- save the hundred bucks - and get the PSC 2110 instead!
37 Buy this printer
I'm embarrassed to say how many ink-jet printers I have been through over the years. I even bought a Tektronics (Xerox) Phaser laser color printer since I was so disappointed with my purchases.
Browsing through printer depts., I happened to hit the demo button on the PCS 2110 and was very impressed by what I saw. I then placed a glossy brochure on the scan bed of a series of printers and the 2210 was by far the most realistic in reproduction. Then I looked at the price and dropped my jaw.
A truly great and inexpensive printer. Glossy photos look like they came from a photo lab. Even small envelops feed without trouble. Insert a memory card and print a proof sheet and you can check what you want printed and the printer reads your choices back in through the scan bed. Clever!
A printer that automatically aligns itself? Brilliant!
I don't work for HP or own their stock. Simply an honest review of the last printer you'll need to buy. No regrets!
38 Warning for Windows 98 users: Stay away from this all-in-one
What a disappointment! After two weeks of wrangling with customer service to determine why my new 2210 won't print, I came across a page on the HP website that admitted that for users of Windows 98 who may be "on the low end" of the minimum recommended system requirements, the printer won't print from Windows. My computer is a 500 mhz Intel processor running 192 MB RAM, which according to the manual, was well within minimum requirements. I've thrown everything off my computer just to get this thing to work; I've uninstalled and reinstalled the software six times; I've gotten a new disk (from a neighbor)and tried that; I've downloaded the enormous "new version 2.0" of the software from hp's website ... I've done it all. Something about this software will eat up your system resources, and HP admits that there's a problem and it's "investigating it."
If this sounds like a fun adventure for you, then buy the product - but if your processor isn't at the high end, then seriously reconsider until HP works out the bugs.
39 Great Product, Poor Support
I couldn't find anything that explained where to get an additional driver (ME) for Windows XP print sharing. This is required when the host is running Windows XP and the remote PC is running Windows ME. The online email response I got didn't address XP and didn't tell me the file name of the driver or where to get it. With home networks becoming common, help loading printer drivers to support multiple computers seems like a pretty basic support task. A phone call to a support tech didn't help either. The support tech was incompetent and borderline rude. His supervisor said they couldn't help and said to call the PC manufacturer. Why would I call the PC manufacturer about where to get an HP printer driver? Great product. Absolutely terrible support.
40 Typical Problem
In many ways...this is a great piece of equipment for people who want a basic second set of office equipment...particularly for home. It has already saved me in several situations when I needed to send a fax, make a few quick copies, etc. Nevertheless, the damn thing has a problem with its paper feeder. More often than not, it picks up too many sheets of paper, has a paper jam, or spits out slightly to extremely crumpled pieces of paper. If not for this...I'd say this is great...unfortunately...this is too major a flaw to overlook.
41 Should Have....
purchased the first time I was in the market for a printer. But I went out and bought a ----- and it's no longer in service. I bought this item at 5 o'clock and had it up and running by 6 o'clock(due to traffic, it took a while to get home) The set up instructions were easy to follow, fool proof (and I ought to know, I'm a fool). The colors are bright and printing is fast. I am just very impressed and happy I purchased this printer/fax/scanner/copier!
42 software problems
I was really excited to get this machinge, however after an entire non productive working day of trying to install the software and waiting for and working with HP tech service, I gave up. Despite having the recent version of Windows installer, this software didn't install properly on Windows ME...nor will it uninstall the components that did make it to the hard drive. I read an earlier review about this problem before I bought it, but was swayed by the positive feedback of others. Beware of this product if you have Windows ME - this is beyond annoying. Tech did note that they have had problems with this - I'd say they still do!
43 simple to use, packed with features, and a great value
I am extremely satisfied with this printer. Plugged it into my iBook for the first time and was printing high-quality color photos from my camera in minutes. The prints-from-memory-card feature is extraordinary; it eliminates the download-from-camera-to-computer step entirely. This printer produces a nice proof sheet which you mark up with photo printing instructions and lay back onto the scanning bed. One minute later, your photos are done. This is the innovation that will wean me off standard print photography for good. Also very useful: you can upload images to your computer from your memory card through the printer. Photo print quality is good so far. You have to purchase more ink cartridges to get the highest grade 6-color printing, which I haven't tried yet.
Also provides quick, crisp black text output, easy fax and scanning functions, helpful set-up software and tutorials... all in a reasonably small, good-looking machine.
**Remember to buy a USB cable--it doesn't come with one.**
44 worse than I expected from an HP product in this price range
HP PSC2210 is an overall decent machine, which may please an average occasional user. However, its performance falls way short of what HP claims in the manual and on the box. I was frustrated with the scanner performance and dissatisfied with the printer, and ended up returning the product and buying Epson Stylus CX5200, which in my opinion performs much better for less money.
INSTALLATION: I installed the software on Dell Dimension 4500 (P4, WinXP, 2 GHz, 768 MB RAM) without a glitch. The process took a long time - over 5 min, and occasionally nothing would change on the screen for over a minute, although I could hear some hard drive activity going on. On a slower computer, one can easily get a wrong impression that the installation hangs, although it does not. I did not experience any of the installation problems reported on Amazon earlier. The software package is rather extensive, has basic tools for image editing, optical character recognition, and enables one to create video CDs which can be watched on most DVD players.
SCANNER. The scanner works fine if all you need is to scan an image to paste it into Word or post on the web. A 4" by 6" photograph takes 12-14 s to preview, and about 35 s to scan at 600 dpi. This is on par or faster than what you would expect from stand-alone scanners in the same price range. However, if you scan a photograph into Photoshop and look at shadow areas, you will see bluish vertical streaks, which are artifacts of the scanner. Additionally, the scanner tends to emphasize all dust particles and scratches, particularly at 600 dpi or 1200 dpi resolutions. This makes the scanned image looks a lot worse than the original at 600 dpi and horrible at 1200 dpi. 48-bit scanning, although supported, is a total disaster. First, once you turned it on, the preview takes forever - 70 seconds! Secondly, since the bluish streaks in the dark areas are even more visible in 48 bit mode, the scans at 48 bit are as good as useless since you cannot improve the picture in the shadow areas without making the scanner artifacts visible. I have an Epson Perfection 1650 at my office, and could compare the scans obtained from the same photograph with very bright and very dark areas. Sorry, HP, but Epson's scans are incomparably better.
PRINTER: I have not tried photo printing, but tested text printing rather thoroughly. HP should be ashamed of its misleading the customers by claiming that it prints up to 17 ppm in B&W. I guess, HP measured this speed by printing blank pages. I measured printing speed of a double-space formatted black and white text and obtained 5 ppm in "normal mode" and 7.5 ppm in "fast draft". This is only 1.5 times faster than my old slow HP710C. For comparison, Epson Stylus CX5200 which I bought instead of this HP printed 7.5 ppm of the same text in "normal" mode and 12-15 ppm in "draft". Ink cartridges are tiny (17/19 ml) which is about half of the size used in HP 700/800 series printers.
COPIER: Can't complain, works fine, although it can copy only as fast as it can print. Has a number of useful zoom/brightness/quality adjustments, accessible through the small LCD screen and four multifunction buttons.
OTHER GOODIES: It has 4 slots which accomodate any existing type of memory card. Index print can be generated automatically; then you take a pen, check the boxes on the index print which pictures you want, how many copies, and what size, scan the index print again, and the PSC2210 recognizes the marks and does the printing for you. Sounds pretty cool. I have not tried this feature since I prefer to upload my digital images to one of the .com companies which prints them on real photopaper at a lot lower cost than it costs to print them on an inkjet at home.
BOTTOMLINE: Many users will be happy with this machine, if they do not expect a lot and had no chance to compare it with other models. The built-in fax and ability to print pictures directly from memory cards may be appealing to some. However, the quality of scanning and the printing speed were a lot lower than I expected from an HP product in this price range, and falls short of what the competitors offer at the same price.
45 I LOVE THIS PRINTER!!!!!
The HP 2210 is an absolutely excellent machine. The printing is fast. Copying is simple and gives excellent results - I copied the cover of a magazine onto Kodak Glossy Photo Paper and got a copy that looks as good as the original. Next I copied a wallet size photo of my daughter, and you have to look at it very carefully to tell that it's not the original. Black and white copies are clear and crisp. Scanning is easy and gives great results. Printing is fast and clear, and doesn't slow the computer while printing. Setup was so simple - the only way to screw it up would be to not follow the instructions (which are easy enough for a child to follow). The ink cartridges are easy to install, and less expensive than the cartridges for the other brands of printers I looked at. Be sure to get the photo print cartridge, it's worth the extra couple of bucks. I have not tried to fax anything yet, or use the photo card option, but so far, I have no compaints and lots of praise for this great machine!
46 Great Multifunction machine, high ink cost
I brought this machine 2 weeks ago. The installation was smooth on my XP machine. Copy and scan works great, so is normal printing on plain paper. Photos look perfect on the HP premium photo paper samples included in the package. It is very, very slow when using the 4800*1200 optimized color DPI output setting, though. Don't use Kodak premium photo paper, there is too much red on the printouts.
The only major complaint I have is the cost of ink.
47 Multifunction printer for the Mac and OSX
I was looking for a multifunction printer that would work with Mac and OSX (10.2). This looked like the right mix of quality and features. I have checked all the major brands and decided that HP had good name and features. I was worried about the driver but my worries were unfounded. I checked the HP site and they said the most recent version of OSX 10.23 worked fine. Indeed the product was shipped timely and I was able to set it up and load the driver from the included CD and it immediately was recognized and added to my printer list without any hitches. True plug and play! Everything works great although I haven't actually tried to fax anything yet. I would recommend it for Mac users wanting an OSX native multifunction printer
48 problem free!!!
had to write after reading all the horror stories of installation, they are absolutely not true. Thanks to the guys who posted and said don"t hook up the printer until after software install. Not that you can miss the signs on the printer saying not to. Comes with a step by step install chart and went perfectly. Have tried everything except scanner and it works great on my DELL with windows XP. The guys who took thirty hours to install either cant read or are just disgruntled Ex -hp compact employees!!!
49 This machine is perfect !!! I feel lucky to own it !
Just got this machine from a [store] with ... discount coupon. The set up is easy, user friendly. I am running window XP professional edition and the software set up is perfect and smooth. I have already tested the print, fax, copy and scan function. It seems perfect on my machine. What's wrong other people said they couldn't set it up on window XP ? Hey ! This machine is really good with that price. Thanks HP...I am very lucky to have a chance to own this machine.
50 A satisfied Customer
Don't let the problematic XP reviews fool you. HP posted a new PSC2210 driver set for WindowsXP on their website on 2003-01-31. This printer is a great value. I wish it could accomodate all 3 cartridges at the same time to avoid swapping between text and photo; however, it is still a good bang for the buck.
Just one complaint. The cost of the cartridges is high and they do not go very far. Be prepared and keep some extras on hand.
51 Great all around
I just can't see why people have problems installing this baby. I have windows ME and after fallowing setup poster i had no problem using this machine. It took me twenty minutes from the time i got it out of the box to my first printed page. Scanner works great and so do the photo printing. Haven't used fax or memory card but so far i could't be happier with this product. I have been shopping around for all-in-one and for the money this is the best deal in any town.
52 Think twice (maybe even three times) before you buy this!
I have spent the last hour trying to set up my parents' new 2210; it has already jammed seven times just trying to align the print cartridges! Don't waste your money on this thing; there must be a better printer out there.
53 Love my 2210
I've owned my HP2210 now for about two weeks and I love it. I've used almost all of the photo print capabilities and find them to be excellent. This is particularly unusual since I am a 35MM photo buff. The quality on the 2210, using the 58 print cartridge and HP photo paper is consistant with my 35MM prints. I've enlarged existing 3.5 X 5 prints to 8 X 10, printed digital shots and printed shots E-mailed to me. They are absolutely beautiful. The install went without a hitch following HP's install poster. I run Win XP and had no problems with the software. The unit does have a large footprint on my desk but with this kind of capability...who cares. The black printing is comparable to other inkjet printers, just fine of home use. The copy capability is very good for our light useage. I've used the scanner and it's output is very good, like other HP top quality scanners. I haven't faxed anything yet. we are not heavy fax users. I wanted the capability just in case. Overall, I see this unit lasting us for years and giving us a home capability comparable to any small office.
54 Worth every cent
This printer works great. I like the digital photo features. I have not used the fax machine yet. Good quality printer. The HP ink cartridges are a little pricy, and they're small.
55 Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat
I set this printer up for my son in law and ran off a few pictures from my Minolta Dimage 5 digital camera. The pictures were better than I would have got from a film. I printed a proof sheet, selected the prints I wanted, in the size and quantity I wanted, pressed the button and Lo! perfect prints, up to letter size. The printer did it all!!!.
I am going to get one for myself.

56 DON'T DO IT!
This printer has been a disaster. I had high hopes and never did get the scanner to work after many hours, weeks and high phone bills w/hp customer support! Apparently the software is NOT compatible w/Windows XP so don't even bother to try it if that's what you have. Save yourself the time and trouble. I wish someone would have warned me!
57 Great all in one, decent photo printer
Printed 8x10 photo, taken with a Olympus Camedia 3000 digital camera, in HP's photo glossy paper and got such a good result that gave up on the idea of buying a dedicated photo printer.
Hyper-fast draft printing mode that is a God-send to print proofs of texts. Text quality is acceptable for an inkjet, but far from a laser printer. If you need high quality text go for a laser.
Easy to use as a copier or fax. Instructions on the LCD are in plain english and easy to follow.
Very good software to print photos, could be better on image editting - but I think that would be asking to much from HP. :-)
Overall, great printer for small/home office in search of a do it all machine that doubles as a nice photo printer while printing acceptable inkjet-like text!
58 Excellent Printer, bad software
I got an excellent deal for this highly rated printer. Photo printing was amazing so was the copying and scanning. I used HP 58 for photo printing and printed both 4x6 and 8x10 photos with excellent results. Where this printer fails is the poorly written drivers and software. I connected to an XP/P4 machine with 512MB RAM. Scanning 8x10 photo at any bit rate resulted in memory errors. Apart from scanning, I experienced frequent freezes and HP processes will not shut down when I shut down the pc and had to be killed via Task Manager. HP sent me an updated software CD which didn't help. I returned the printer. Shame on HP.
59 Best compact all-in-one!
I wanted an all-in-one (printer, scanner, copier, and fax) for quite a long while. After some extensive research (comparisons and bargain-hunting), I fell in love with this machine! The look, feel, reputability, features...all passed my "buyability" test. I got my husband to buy it for me as my Christmas gift. He loves it too! The copy speed and color quality is great! and it fits neatly on the computer workstation.
This is also a great product to buy if you have a digital camera. It comes with its own port that fits almost all digital cards. I used to have to 'hook up' the cable from my camera to the computer, but now all I have to do is insert it in the machine and it will instantly print a proofsheet for you and/or you can just easily save the pics on your computer.
This is really a great buy!!
60 Good printer, not as good installation, iffy tech support
I'm actually happy with the printer itself, but there have been a few rocky moments. The software installation has a couple of times where there are extended waits and to a normal person it appears that the CD is bad or the system locked up. I eventually found that if you just keep waiting and don't touch anything it will eventually finish successfully. My big disappointment so far has been that when I have used the proof sheet feature to try to print some 4x6 prints directly from a memory card, in spite of my selecting borderless on the proof sheet it prints the photos with a border. Online tech support walked me through several test prints which succeeded in nothing more than wasting paper, ink, and lots of time. My HP P130 photo printer prints borderless from a memory card just fine, but the PSC 2210 does not, and for me this makes the direct print from memory card feature a lot less useful.
One aspect of the memory card slots deserves some mention. It is a good idea to make sure that all writes to a memory card have been saved before it is removed (or you could lose data) and a Dazzle USB 6 in 1 card reader I have allows you to right click on the drive icon, select eject (it doesn't actually eject the card, you have to pull it out), and know that you're good to remove the card. Both the HP PSC 2210 and the P130 give an error message when you "eject" the card, but then don't complain when you actually pull the card out. I think HP could use just a little more polish on their software for this.
61 Good hardware profile, but Software was a major problem.
I looked at many models to replace my scanner, HP color printer, and brother fax machine, and finally decided on the PSC 2210. The feature list was extensive, the price was good (with the holiday sales) and the low-profile size was perfect for my office. I was very excited when the printer finally arrived at the doorstep.
Unfortunately, after several days of diagnostics, installing and uninstalling drivers, applications, and operating systems, I'm excited to return this product and end my headaches.
From the start, the software had problems installing. It would stop mysteriously at 19% or 49% and I couldn't even kill the process using Task Manager (win2k + winXP). When I finally got the software installed, after many reboots, I encountered several lockups. You cannot just install a small suite of drivers: you have to install an extensive application suite (~150 MB).
Scanning was the most problematic. I had problems using third-party programs and scanning via TWAIN. The scanner would start scanning, but wouldn't complete the scan. Then the programs would complain that it couldn't find the scanner. To start the whole process over again, I had to turn the printer off then on, and restart the computer. I never completed a scan 100%.
I even went so far as to completely install a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro on a separate partition, "test run" the OS for a few hours, and then install the HP Printer Software. Same problems immediately after installing the software. I even encountered applications hangs while uninstalling the software.
For those who will continue and buy this printer, the only advice I can give you is to make sure you can return this printer, and to test out all the features immediately when you get it. My paystub doesn't say "HP Quality Assurance Department", so I'm returning the printer.
62 Fantastic Product
This product met then exceeded my expectations. For example, I was not really expecting much with the digital camera slots on the side although I do have an Olympus 3030 digital camera. To my suprise, when I inserted my card into the slot, the HP software took over and made printing and managing the transfer of pictures incredibly easy. Not to mention I did not have to use my camera's USB cable and suck all the juice from the camera to conduct a transfer.
63 High Expectations Unmet
After much searching for an officejet to replace my old HPk45, I decided on the 2210. It was the right size, had the right features and the right price. However, after setting it up, I found that it would not scan when attached to my new Dell Dimension 4550 running XP. My first call to HP resulted in this advice: Dell has problems with their USB ports, and, get a powered USB hub. Dell denied a problem. My second call resulted in more honesty. The rep admitted that the printer has problems and that corporate has not addressed them because of their preoccupation with the Compaq merger. Only lately have they taken notice of the complaints. I asked the rep which Officejet he recommended, and he replied unequivocally, the D135. So I returned the 2210 and bought a D135. It cost more, but it has more versatility, is less costly on consumables, and it does scan!!!
64 Surprisingly Good
Very high quality photo production, copying, faxing, character recognition scanning, printing. Easy set up. Great online support. It even takes the card from my Olympus digital camera, prints a proof sheet that allows the user to indicate which photos should be printed in full size. Even copies the disk contents from the printer to the computer. Very pleased with the purchase.
65 What a cool product!
I just purchased this printer for my girlfriend who loves printing photos and creating stuff. I had the printer up and running in under 20 minutes. The pictures are stunning. The software is pretty cool. I have not printed useing photo paper or the photo ink. I am sure the pictures will be even better!
66 Pleasantly Surprised
I was a little leary in buying a multifunctional machine, but after buying and trying this HP PSC 2210 Multifunction Copier Plus, my fears were relieved. I've tried every function. Even sent a fax using my regular phone line and it worked like a charm. ( I didn't have to send the fax, but I did it just for for giggles.) My photo copies are hanging on the wall in my dining room and relatives are nagging me for blow ups of family photos I've shot and copied with the HP 2210.
So far so good.
67 Useful and attractive
I have used every function on this machine except the fax in the five days since this machine was delivered. I am very pleased with its performance. The HP 2210 is for low volume or for low speed use. If you need a lot of copies quickly, this is not the machine for you. But for purely personal use, it's great. I'm very glad I bought it. I bought mine from HP directly, btw.
68 Great Copier, Great Printer, Great Scanner, Great with Linux
It all started out when I wanted a nice flatbed scanner that would work with my GNU/Linux desktop computer. I quickly found that a decent scanner was going to cost me. It was at this point that I realized that since my printer had been on the fritz, I might as well get a MFD so that I would have two devices in less space.
The PSC 2210 is everything I wanted and more. It works nicely as a copier, and the scanner seems to be really top notch. Likewise the printer produces sharp, crisp text and life-like photos very quickly using the drivers HP developed for Linux. The built in photo card reader with index prints and easy print selection make this device even better. Oh, and as an added bonus, you can mount the memory sticks or other photo cards through the PSC 2210 under Linux for convenient access!
If you are looking for a high quality printer and/or scanner, I highly recommend this unit. HP officially supports it under GNU/Linux, which is a big plus for those of us who prefer something other than Windows. So what are you waiting for? Click that order button...
