1 Wow, what a book!
I am a newly diagnosed young woman with breast cancer that over express her2/neu. I am considering taking Herceptin for an early stage cancer. I would not have this possible choice were it not for the wonderfuly minds and efforts of the people that created Herceptin. My thanks to Dr. Slamon and Dr. Ullrich! And really mostly, my thanks to the brave women who faced this horrible disease and enrolled in the trials. This book reads like a novel. I couldn't put it down and read it in 1 sitting. It's a thriller! If I had 1 small complaint it would be that it only very lightly touches on the possible side effect of heart damage especially when used in conjunction with Adriamycin, which weighs heavily on my mind. This is a great read for breast cancer patients and anyone who wants to read a great book.
2 A book that left me speechless
This book gave new light and explored old beliefs about breast cancer. I have never been so impressed by the intellect of such a powerful author as Robert Bazell. Every part of the Her-2 intereasted me and each page left me completely speechless. I would recommend this book everyone willing to explore the idea of an outstandingly facinating book.
3 Good to the Last Page
I had to read this book for my Biotechnology class and although I am close to failing it I found Her-2 to be pretty exciting book.
Her-2 by Bazell and King is about breast cancer, however, it reveals many other interesting things about the drug industry and how progress is made in the medical research field. There are different stories and view points and the authors have succesfully managed to combine all this into a book that both teaches and thrills us. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to learn more about breast cancer and about the insights of creating and bringing to the market a revolutionary drug - from selection of the trial patients to the President's office.
4 HER-2
Whether you are interested in antibodies as therapeutics or in a slice of the Biotech company world, this book is a must read. It details the account of Her-2 as it was discovered and developed into a therapeutic, the story of which provides a portal into the personalities, egos and workings that make up the Biotech world. An interesting point made in the book is - that as smart and as dedicated as these people are, it's difficult to take real breakthroughs into the business driven world.
5 Her 2: The Making of Herceptin
This book is about modern day heroes....every page describes courageous (personal and professional) actions. In an industry (Clinical Research) that is frequently on the wrong side of ethical behavior...it is a tremendous boost to read a story about "everything that has gone right". I use the book as a textbook in distance learning (The George Washington University) college courses. I have sold more copies of this book than the author's relatives...Again, thank you for such a book. Now when is the movie coming out?
6 What a bargain!
This book is a very comprehensive account of the discovery of a revolutionary drug to treat breast cancer. Very pleasant to read, the author guides you through the process which goes from discovering the drug almost by chance, making the trials (from a very human point of view) to the final approval of the drug. If you want to read a very enjoyable book about science, drug development, Phase III trials and human hope, don not look further....
7 A Her-2 Victim's Review
I cried and rejoiced all through this book, which I finished today. I knew very little about my condition, which is Her2neu +3 positivity, the highest level of Her2, until I read it. My first oncologist wanted to keep me in the dark, and if it weren't for folks like Mr. Bazzell, I would still be in the dark. I now have the ammunition I need to be more active in my treatment options. I also am so thankful to read about the discovery of this oncogene, and cannot express adequately enough my gratitude to one of the main subjects of this book, Dennis Salmon, for his dedication to the discovery of Her2 and all he has done to get the drug, Herceptin on the market. Anyone who overexpresses Her2neu must have this book. This breast cancer is phenomenally deadly, and more able to recur and can spread like wildfire, even during chemotherapy and radiation, so thank goodness now I know, from reading this, what can happen, and what needs to be done.
8 A POWERFUL READ
In addition to being an important book, it is accessible and warm . Wonderful writing, and incredible reporting.
9 Powerful
This book possesses the rare combination of drum-tight scientific research and excellent writing. It is the incredible and true story of the making of a drug and its' effect on the people outside the world of science. A facinating read.
10 A must read for anyone fighting breast cancer
I wish I had read this book last year. I ordered while my sister was being treated with Herceptin for a recurrence of breast cancer. Unfortunately, she died before I could get the book.

This book give real insight into the politics of cancer treatment - the passiveness of some oncologists, how an executive's own personal experience with a disease can determine if drug development will go forward or not, and how women are becoming more aggressive in monitoring their own treatment.

Bazell talks about the frustrations of critically ill and dying women in trying to work through the medical, academic and managed care maze to get the treatment they need.

This drug has been the 'magic bullet' for many women. It has been called the start of a new era is disease treatment. It is essential for anyone involved in this disease to read this book, to understand what they are up against and how they can help themselves.

11 A must read for husbands.
My wife has been recieving weekly doses of Herceptin for a year now. A facinating story of how this miracle drug came to be.Reading about how Herceptin grew from a theory to reality, how the marketplace influenced development and the personalities of the people involved made this a real page turner, I couldn't put it down!
12 Cheers to Bazell
Bazell uncovers emotions and stories from patients, advocates/lobbyists, scientists and family members. It is a very moving story -- be sure to have tissues nearby as you read through the Phase I trials.

It could be more well-rounded and present ideas from Genentech's viewpoint as well, and it does end faster than it should. If Bazell or anyone tackles an epilogue to Her-2, I would be the first in line to buy it.

Kudos. A must read for ALL WOMEN.

13 For Thinking Women and Scientists Alike
This is the thinking woman's cancer book. If you are a science buff, cancer pioneer or a woman who wants to know what really happens in the world of science and drug revolutions, read this book.

It's well written, bitter-sweet and manages to be simulataneously scientific and humanistic.

14 Important Book
It's facinating to be behind the scenes in the exciting world of science and celebrity. The two are combined with a heroic and human touch. An important book.
15 Razor Sharp Reporting
This book is written with tight-as-a-drum research and detail. It read like a great suspense novel. As we sit on the edge of our seats for a cure for this devistating disease, Bazel shows us the behind-the-scenes deadlines cancer patients and doctors are working for everyday. This was an unbelievably good book.
16 A Hopeful Story
Her-2 the drug is the start of the solution we've been waiting for..."Her-2" the book is a compassionate look at disease, politics, research and human triumph. The stories of Dr. Slamon, Lily Tartikoff, Ron Perelman and most importantly, breast cancer patients, are woven together in a facinating way.
17 Bestseller
The triumph of this book is not just in that of ana amazing story and triumph for women it is in a style of writing that is as fluid and spellbinding as a best selling novel. I enjoyed it enormously and hope you do to!
18 GRIPPING
Bazell can write! "Her-2" is a phenomenal accomplishment. It's an imporatant read about a new drug. It is also a facinating story about women with breast cancer, scientists and Hollywood millionaires who come together in surprising ways.
19 A powerful and human story about the war on breast cancer.
A heart breaking and powerful book about the women and scientists who are pioneers in the fight to cure breast cancer. One of the first compelling and accessible books about how scientific progress influences our lives. It's an important book, one which I recommend to any woman or any person who has dealt with this devastating disease. I was reminded of "The Band Played On" which also showed the workings of a health crisis from a human perspective. Robert Bazell has written a beautiful and important book. I couldn't put it down.
