An incredibly high 3,000:1 contrast ratio (3 to 6 times higher than that of many comparable displays), exclusive four-point color management circuitry, and a host of other high-end video features make the JVC PD-42WX84 42-inch high-definition widescreen plasma TV an appealing choice for the demanding user.

The 16:9 wide-format screen features a native resolution of 1024 x 768, and can display high-definition video at a resolution of 770p (in fact, it scales up or scales down all video source signals so that they display properly at 770p). Its four-point color management works by taking pinpoint samples of each of the four display colors--green, yellow, red, and blue--and compensating to achieve the right color balance. In addition, its selectable TheaterPro 6500 Kelvin color temperature setting is the NTSC standard, allowing programs to be seen as they were intended to be seen.

Another plus for film enthusiasts, the TV features 3:2 pulldown, which reassembles the frame sequence of your original film-based content from DVDs to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material. Digital edge-correction circuitry, video noise reduction, and on/off switchable velocity scan modulation all contribute to excellent-quality imagery.

The 36-watt BBE High Definition audio system with Advanced HyperSurround and Active Hyper Bass includes two direct-drive slim side speakers and a separate subwoofer for full, rich sound.

Additional convenient features include aspect selection and zoom, an icon-based menu system, an interactive plug-in menu, and a multifunction timer. For checking two channels at once, the PD-42WX84 can show a split-screen image with zoom, as well as picture-on-picture with 12-channel multi-indexing. It has both a sleep timer and a 10-minute shutoff feature. The included electro-luminescence-based remote control has all buttons illuminated, and includes hyper-scan high-speed channel changing.

The PD-42WX84 accepts two sets of high-resolution component-video inputs (either Y Pb Pr or Y Cb Cr, auto-sensing), DVI input with HDCP copy protection, 3 S-video inputs, 4 A/V (composite) inputs, and an RF input. Most of these inputs are on the separate--but included--tuner box.

1 Effective 8/2004 this is Consumer Report's 2nd Best Plasma
Clearly an amazing set, and second only to the Hitachi which is over TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS more expensive. Best deal in town, people, based on testing by the most recognized non-profit consumer testing organization.

This is an awesome, high quality product and I just bought two! Pay no attention to negative reviews, usually only unhappy consumers comment at all. Excellent plasma television set!

I found an AMAZING wall mounting installer if you need one. My televisions are up and the sound is INCREDIBLE, way better than I expected.
2 Incredibly disappointing
Do your self a favor and don't waste your money on this poor excuse for a plasma screen. The pixilation is incredibly obvious and there are much better screens out there for a lot less money. Sony, Samsung or even Gateway would be a better choice. Compared to the set I have, a $200 CRT would be a better choice. This is a $4500 boat anchor.

On top of everything else, JVC's customer service (which borders on being non-existent) is terribly rude and not helpful at all. They are unprofessional in the extreme.

3 Terrible Plasma
This plasma has great specs on paper, but actually looks terrible. The color banding and pixelation is horrible in all resolutions and formats. I tried this tv with every connection it had from multiple dvd players and a pc. The problems were obvious regardless of the source.

I sent it in for repair only to hear back from JVC that it is performing within specifications, which is pretty sad considering I have a 25 year old CRT that looks better.

Avoid this plasma. The specs and price may look good, but the plasma itself is horrible quality.

4 Really Bad So Cal Service!
Poor analog picture quality regardless of source (including component input). Severe solarization from bright or reflective picture content. Spent 5 months trying to have it repaired and now it's worse! HDTV 1080i w/HDCP only works with the Samsung Direct TV Receiver. HDTV/HDCP/DVI compatability a BIG problem! Actual HDTV via DVI input looks good when I finally got it to work! These issues might be the reason that the price for this model have dropped over $1500 in the past 6 months! DON'T BUY JVC! Much better choices out there!
5 Simply Fantastic
We're really amazed by this TV. We had planned to buy another Plasma screen TV that cost more, but we ended up choosing this one because it blew the others away. It's great from it's features to the way it looks. It's Just an awsome buy. If you are in the market in this price range, look no further. GET THIS ONE.
