1 Does not cover java .14 (NIO)
First off this is a well written book. And it's sections on the various protocols is good.

However, it does not cover using the NIO (java 1.4) networking API which is much faster and more efficient. So this book is very useful if you are still having to write for java 1.3.

But if you are writing for java 1.4 (or 1.5), then it has some useful stuff, mainly on the various protocols - but does not cover anything about how to handle the actual network communication.
