Jawbreaker

Rose McGowan vamps it up mercilessly as the "Satan in heels," a teenage-bitch queen whose birthday prank gone terminally wrong leaves her best friend dead, choked to death on a jawbreaker the size of a fist. Rebecca Gayheart, with her sparkling eyes and a smile that could melt an iceberg, is the good girl at heart who becomes a social pariah when she drops out of the group, trading her plunging necklines for librarian-lite sweaters and long skirts. Jawbreaker wants nothing less than to be the Heathers of its generation, but only intermittently hits the mark, such as when McGowan turns a mousy nobody into the next big thing, a slutty tease whose craving for attention soon challenges McGowan's supremacy. "She's evil," someone finally realizes, "and she's only in high school!" That's unfortunately the best Darren Stein's film gets. For all its catty talk and surface glamour, it's a flat, broadly directed satire that never lives up to its evocative title. Features an appearance by teen rock punks the Donnas as the prom band. --Sean Axmaker
1 Everything is peachy keen..
In the same vein as Heathers, Jawbreaker is a darkly humorous high-school tale of 4 best girlfriends who "kidnap" their friend Liz Purr on her birthday gagging her with a Jawbreaker, and accidentally killing her. The three girls freak out, then Courtney, drives them to school and makes the decision for all of them that they are not going to tell anyone, and call in sick for Liz pretending to be her mother. Since Courtney is the leader of the group, she is the one making all the calls. They return Liz to her house after school and put her back in her bed. But Fern Mayo shows up unexpectedly with Liz's homework and see's her dead body on the bed. She is then interrogated by Courtney, and convinced by her with bribery that if she keeps the secret she will make her beautiful, popular, loved and feared. So, Fern is now transformed into Vylette, Courtney's "creation", and Julie is kicked out of the group because she doesn't want anything to do with it, but is too scared to tell because Courtney threatens her reputation, and sais that she'll tell Detective Cruz that they all saw her do it. We then progress as Liz's body is discovered, Fern becomes more and more like Courtney, and Julie sits by and remains helplessly desperate in her own sorrow. So she finally musters up enough courage by the time that Courtney and Marcy ruin Fern's reputation and everyone knows that shes really a "loser". With Fern and Zack on her side she tries to tell the Detective but Courtney has already sealed the evidence by having had sex with a random stranger on Liz's bed before the police found her, telling the Detective she wasn't a virgin, and that she liked strange men. So Dectective Cruz doesn't think Julie knows what she's talking about and Julie is given some of Liz's old things and find a recording on a card of Courtney admitting that she killed Liz and plays it over the speakers at the prom.
2 I KNOW SOMETHING BETTER TO SEE
you know, I have this on DVD, and I wasn't impressed. girl chokes on jawbreaker, friends pose nude body for police and parents to find, and everyone makes it to the prom to find out who is really nice and who isn't?

You should buy HEATHERS on DVD. It's a lot better.

3 Rose is great
I really enjoyed this movie and I have seen small parts of the movie but not until now have I seen the whole thing. I think everyone needs to see this movie it is one of my favorite movies of all time. The begining my throw some people off but I really don't think you can do that but it could happen. It is a good look at popular girls and what they have to do to stay on top.
4 EYE CANDY
There's a demonic undertone to this black comedy that delineates the cruelty of teenagers; and also, their lack of self-understanding, and their commitment to only please themselves. For instance, the scene where hunky Ethan Erickson is waiting for his beloved Rose McGowan to arrive, he tries several different poses on the bed; resorts to stripping to his underwear, and then when she arrives, she baits him with a popsicle. You can tell he's uncomfortable in licking the popsicle, but you can also see the delight in McGowan's eyes in making him suck the popsicle. When she uses this to bait him as to what he would like done, we can see the cruelty in McGowan's character.
The idea of having someone die from choking on a humongous jawbreaker is original, but at the same time, the coolness and nonchalance the girls display in their friend's death is frighteningly realistic ... to a point. Not one to bash teenagers, we do need them after all?, the movie still makes us see all the things we hated about high school.
While McGowan is excellent in her bitch queen role, her destruction at the prom is almost as devastating as Carrie's in the well known horror book/flick. Rebecca Gayheart as the tried and true Julie sinks to McGowan's level in this destruction. Julie Benz is appropriately ditzy as Foxy and Judy Greer as Fern Mayo/Vylette also well cast. Erickson is a perfect choice for the self-absorbed and hedonistic Dane. Chad Christ as Julie's dramatic boyfriend does well, and once again shows how in high school, if you are a drama freak, you're probably homosexual.
The movie falls apart in several places, but does have some good cameos from Pam Grier as Det. Vera Cruz; Jeff Conaway as Foxy's dad, who does a cute Tiffany impersonation; and wastes William Katt and PJ Soles as the victim's parents. (Ironic, they both appeared in the original CARRIE).
Not a classic, but does pack some punch in what it's trying to say, it's just afraid to come out and say it: teenagers are cruel.
5 "Jawbreaker" has a good hook but then bait & switches on us
"Jawbreaker" begins with the accidental death of Liz Purr (Charlotte Ayanna) as the result of an encounter with the titular confection. That act is the hook for a young audience to watch this 1999 black comedy but it is really just an excuse for yet another rather lackluster version of the movie where the elite young girls at a high school savage each other (i.e., "Mean Girls" without Tina Fey's wit). The problem with this movie for most people is going to be that it is going to strike them as a case of bait and switch. You think this movie is going to be something along the lines of "Scream" or "Carrie" and it is really more like "She's All That" and "Can't Hardly Wait."

The accidental death sets up three plots lines. First, Queen "B" Courtney Alice Shayne (Rose McGowan) is on a mission to make sure that nothing happens to her position atop the school hierarchy. Second, good girl Julie Freeman (Rebecca Gayheart) feels badly about killing their best friend and rethinks her membership in the elite group. Third, wallflower Fern Mayo (Judy Greer) is transformed by Courtney into the vivacious Vylette, who gets to replace Liz. There is a fourth member of the group, Marcie "Foxy" Fox (Julie Benz), but she is Courtney's loyal stooge and is incapable of independent thought. Meanwhile, Detective Vera Cruz (Pam Grier) is investigating Liz's death and is questioning the girls.

The character of the detective is a pivotal one in the film because she reveals the flaws of this film. I mean, come on, we are talking about Pam Grier playing a hard-nosed detective, and she gets taken for a ride by a bunch of teenage girls who do not break a sweat. There is some confusion as to circumstances of Liz's death, thanks to Courtney's efforts, but the disturbing fact that somebody called the school pretending to be Liz's mother to explain she would be home "sick" seems to get forgotten by the time the police haul in a suspect. These are not the brightest kids to begin with and their effort to cover up their crime only works because in the end this drama has to be played out at the high school prom and not in some precinct house or juvenile court.

McGowan was nominated for an MTV Movie Award for Best Villain for this film and she has a fine time being the cold-hearted queen of the school the story requires. But the more over the top she goes in terms of being so nasty to those she demands bow down before her that you end up wondering what is wrong with them rather than with Courtney. Gayheart does a good job of playing her uncomfortableness with what is going on, thereby grounding the movie from time to time in something resembling reality, while Benz vacillates between frightened fool and sarcastic sidekick. The cast and the performances are good, but not good enough to cover the problems with the basic story and in the end "Jawbreaker" does not finish as strongly as it started.

6 Just When I Thought Rebecca and Rose Had True Potential
This film alone is the number one reason Rebecca Gayheart and Rose McGowen will never become top actresses or earn the respect of Hollywood. While young actresses like Julia Stiles, Kristen Dunst, Claire Danes, Christina Ricci and Jennifer Love Hewett have branched out to make films people can take seriously, actresses like Gayheart and McGowen give the " teen " scene a bad name. And that's terrible considering these so-called teens were in their thirties when this film was done. The problem is not with Jawbreaker. Yeah the movie is stupid and as entertaining as an engrown toenail, still Rose and Rebecca have kissed their futures as serious actresses gone forever. I used to enjoy both of these ladies in previous films. But once I saw this I realized they weren't even trying to be noticed as serious actresses. If they were they wouldn't have even looked at the Jawbreaker script ONCE. Jawbreaker is terrible but it's the lead actresses that should be embarrassed. Not the filmmakers.
7 Great, but no masterpeice
I first saw the USA version of the movie. At first, I didnt really care for it, but as I watched it more I started to like it. It's about 3 vixens (One later dissaproves, and then drops the "group") who accidently kill their best friend, Elizabeth Purr by a birthday prank. It's like Clueless and Heathers together, its not dark like Heathers is. Later on Courtney Shane does WHATEVER it takes to cover up her murder (She even slept with a stranger). The school geek, Fern, found out about it. The day Liz was 'sick' she was assinged by Ms. Sherwood to deliver her homework, and overheard everything. Of course Courtney has to do whatever she can to cover it up, she transforms her into the beautiful stylish Vylette. Over the movie thoguh, Vylette becomes as Wicked as Courtney, and of course she cant stand taht, so she revealed her identaty ASAP. I wont spoil the ending, you'll ahve to watch it for yourslef... but overall I highly recommend it. It's a good movie, but defenitly not a masterpeice.
MPAA: Rated R: Sexuality, Language, and Violence all involving teens
Age range: 14-19
My rating: 14+ (Hey, you'd see this stuff everyday if you are in Middle School and High School)
8 morbid
This is a morbid comedy about a gang of girlfriends who do a prank that goes totally wrong. Jawbreaker in the mouth and the girl ends up dying. Girls feel guilty. Can they get away with the crime ? You'll see. Sounds good but really it isn't.
9 ew.
Quite possibly the worst movie ever made. They were obviously going for some kind of quirky artistic direction with this, but the colors are tacky and headache inducing.

The script is terrible, with constant ramblings about nail polish color and beauty marks turning into fish on the backs of peoples necks. While I know not much brilliance should be expected from a teen movie, this was particularly painful to sit through. I could seriously feel my brain rotting away.

10 Ethan Erickson
Being a teen guy I wanted to see this movie for hot girls. Instead Ethan Erickson "Dane" caught my eye, he is one hot guy. Look at his body, he has great abs, muscles, and a very hot face. I liked it when he had to work on the "big stick", and Rose McGowan told him not to come yet. I wonder what Ethan is up to these days, I have not seen him in a movie since. I hope he is still hot.
11 Fun Movie!
This movie was meant to be taken lightly and fun! I bought it mainly because I am a huge Rose mcgowan fan, and I LOVED it! Rose is a great actress and she carries the film great. It's a great under rated "Teen" movie with an awesome soundtrack!
12 Jawbreaker
It's funny because my friends and I had an inside joke with this movie. I got to be Courtney. This movie is really.. different. In some ways it is predictible, but it also shocking. Even just describing the beginning would be giving too much away. It is a funny look at death, popularity, looks, and friendship.. Whoever said 'nice guys finish last' obviously didn't see this movie..
13 What You Do With Your Candy Is Up To You.
This movie tries to be a modern version of "Heathers" and fails pretty badly. Just like a jawbreaker - flaky once you sink your teeth in, and just as hard to get through. Rose McGowan is the only one even trying here and she deserves better material than this. It's billed as a comedy, but there's really nothing to laugh at except some glaringly huge plot holes. I will give the film credit for being eye-candy colorful - how sweet - maybe the director should be a production designer instead.
14 A highly entertaining dark comedy
I can understand why some people don't particularly like this movie, but I enjoyed it immensely. Of course, I enjoy anything featuring Rose McGowan, but the movie itself is actually a lot of fun. If you tend to take movies seriously and have trouble suspending your disbelief, this movie isn't for you, and a short description of the movie should easily convince you to take your cinematic interests elsewhere. I happen to like over the top movies about high school life, and Jawbreaker takes the stratification of high school society, something we are all acquainted with in one form or another, and runs with it. Rose McGowan plays Courtney Shane, considered by some to be "Satan-in-heels." She is your ultimate clique queen, operating the controls of high school popularity and approachability with the help of faithful and reliable henchbabe Marcie Fox (Julie Benz) and two goody-goodies who somehow manage to stay cool despite hobnobbing with their social inferiors from time to time. Rebecca Gayheart (who finds herself in the odd situation of being rather invisible whenever McGowan shares the screen with her) plays Julie Freedman, and she is in fact complicit in the unusual death of Elizabeth Purr, sweet little angel and fourth member of the ruling babes of Reagan High School. Courtney, Marcie, and Julie celebrate Liz's 17th birthday by disguising themselves, sneaking into her room, tying her up and gagging her, throwing her into the trunk of their car, and eventually releasing her to enjoy the hilarity of their innocent little prank. Wouldn't you know it, something goes awry. The insanely large jawbreaker that Courtney stuffs in her mouth before taping it closed manages to work its way down Liz's throat. With their friend dead, the three girls must take action quickly to avoid detection; Courtney is a natural at evil plotting and quickly enacts a plan. Unfortunately, class geek Fern Mayo happens along and overhears the big secret, prompting Courtney to take drastic action; in return for Fern's silence, she will transform Fern into the beautiful, popular girl she has always wanted to be. Julie wants no part of it, but her own guilt and complicity leads her to do little more than go schoolmarm and reject her evil friends.

This movie does raise issues about high school life, but it does not attempt to make some meaningful statement . The common stereotypes are presented but not dwelt on. Those who would not understand how nice, sweet Fern could be enticed into going over to the dark side were obviously not among the nerds and geeks of their own graduating class. Even though Courtney was hated as much as she was loved, the vast majority of her peers wanted to be like her, immensely popular, beautiful, intimidating, and awe-inspiring. Sure, she is selfish, evil, and uncaring, but that's part of her charm. I personally prefer her to Julie, who pretends to be something she is not and blames Courtney alone for an act she herself played a large part in.

Don't even try to think about this movie; you're not supposed to learn anything here. This is entertainment and nothing more, and I for one was greatly entertained. The ending leaves a little something to be desired, but all in all this is a marvelous dark comedy. Rose McGowan makes this movie cool all by herself, but the kicking soundtrack is more than ready to assist in this endeavor whenever called upon, which is quite often. The music is almost a character in and of itself, beautifully assisting in the creation of whatever atmosphere is required for each scene, and its incessant energy never allows for a moment of drag as the story works itself out. There is quite a bit of profanity in the script, and it is this much more than Rose McGowan's all-too-brief yet sizzling nude scene that earns this one its R rating. I seem to take delight in praising movies of this type, and I take great delight in praising this one. Jawbreakers is a very entertaining dark comedy.

15 Zero stars!
One of the stupidest movies ever, warped story, terrible acting. Heck, i got something right here for her to choke on
16 Stupid ! Stupid ! Stupid !
I can't believe how very stupid this movie is. The plot was bizzare as heck, the acting was awful. Well at least the chicks were hot, but unless you are 12 that won't matter. Don't waste your time
17 A rare combination of stupid and mean-spirited
This might have been semi-entertaining had the writers backed up the rather tired premise with some strong punchlines. But snide doesn't necessarily mean smart, as the screenplay amply proves. Not even the beautiful Rose McGowan (the only reason the movie deserves 1 star) can save this mess. And the music by the Donnas is beyond irritating. One of the worst films I've ever seen.
18 Bitchy Movie
A movie about three witches putting a "Jawbreaker" into their friend's mouth while she's asleep and accidentally killing her. Original! Yeah, right. This is Rose McGowan's kind of movie. ... I wish Pam Grier pulled a "Foxy Brown" on all of these 'girls' rears. Not funny, not cool. For the mindless folk only.
19 Not funny, but way entertaining
This movie rocks!! So entertaining! best quote:

Julie- our best friend is dead! do you have any idea what that means?

Marcie- that your shoe in for prom queen?

20 What amazing teen movie
ilike it ,i like the actress rose McGowan in this movie she is an evil character with that foxy girl what an amazing movie ..
21 what are yall smoking
possibly the worst movie ever. dumb plot. mediocre acting. not funny or scary seen it all before in a better movie.
22 YAY!
This was a great movie with a cool DVD. It all started out as a
simple birthday prank...gone totally wrong. One of the girls
stuffed a golfball-sized jaw-breaker in her mouth to keep her
from screaming. The girl accidently swallows the enormous
jawbreaker and chokes herself to (real) death. The death sparks
unknown scandell...but no one knows it is her. I reccomend it.
Rent it at your own risk.
23 Jawbreaker featuring Rose McGowan
I thought that Jawbreaker was one of the most fun and scary films I have recently seen. Not only was the plot good but with the brilliant line of great actresses, it was a good film to watch!
24 the most painful 40 minutes of my life
This is the worst movie I have ever seen in my life. The first time I ever walked out of a theater was during this .... I kept thinking-"this can't get any worse and then watched in horror as it did." The script and the acting seemed to be in a competition as to who could do a poorer job. It looked like it was put together on a twenty dollar budget. Plus the jawbreaker was the size of a baby's head. If you buy this movie you will regret it,... Never tell anyone you own it.
25 Surreality Does NOT Bite...
This eye-catching Darren Stein teen satire caught MY eye several times while flipping channels, but I'd never caught the film from the beginning. Finally, I watched it from beginning to end, and I enjoyed it so much, I watched it again. ............. Rose McGowan plays Courtney Shayne, a viciously hateful head of a 4 girl highschool clique. All four are beautiful, stylish, spoiled and naturally, cool with capital "C". There's cohort Julie Benz as Marcy Fox aka "Foxy" (her neckplate states), she is a stereotypic "dumb blonde" unquestionably following Courtney's rules. Rebecca Gayheart plays Julie Freedman. She's a wholesome, sweet girl looking for fun, and friendship. .............. The movie opens fabulously as the three girls disguise themselves, and break into their friends bedroom on her birthday. They figure they'll "Feed her pancakes, and strip her... (ect.)", and they'll all have fun giving her an unexpected surprise. We come upon the unusual title of the film, whenCourtney brutally stuffs a "Jawbreaker" golfball size candy into her mouth and then duct tapes it shut. The three then throw her in the trunk of the car. When they arrive at their destination, the trunk opens again, to reveal a far bigger suprise than the one they planned. Their friend is suffocated, eyes wide, dismayed, and unmistakably dead. All this in the first 5 minutes!! ............... The three girls react in totally different ways. "Foxy" freaks, Julie wants to tell someone and get help, and Courtney, being the leader, decides coldly and calculatingly to cover it all up. They take the friends body back home to the bed where they kidnapped her from, and try to make it look like murder. While the three argue about what to do, into the house walks nerd Fern Mayo (Judy Greer). While delivering homework to the now dead classmate she has secretly idolized, she overhears what happened, and see's the body. To shut her up, Courtney offers her a makeover, a new identity, and passport to chic and cool to rule the school. From a pact with the devilish Courtney, "Violet" is born. After all, Fern is a Plant, so Violet is a Flower, according to Courtney's logic. Violet, now the new mysteriously cool chick everyone wants to know better, comes to overshadow Courtney's established cool rule, and all the more deliciously bitchy trouble begins............... This movie is a true masterpiece in the teen genre realm. It touches on similar ground with "Heathers" as well as Keanu Reeves early effort "River's Edge." It's not laugh out loud hilarious, but it is most definitely, a black satire. There are amusing cameos from Carol Kane as a slightly indignant teacher, and speaking of "Foxy", the old 1970s "Foxy Brown", Pam Grier is terrifically dour and surly as a detective hilariously named Vera Cruz. ............. Besides the highly amusing and watchable cast, the film is such a visually attractive treat as well. The vividly sharp candy colors, and frequently surrealistic moods and moments in the cinematography, create even more of an offbeat and quirky feel, than the plot alone delivers. ............... All this and an outstanding soundtrack with the perfect song for every scene (the slow motion school hallway saunter of the three leads to "Yoo-Hoo" from Imperial Teen is my favorite) further takes this up yet ANOTHER notch, making "Jawbreaker" a must see, as well as a must hear!

27 The best!!!!!!!
Jawbreaker is by any means, the best. This dark comedy, it is just the best movie you can ever watch. If you don't own this movie then go out and buy it. I am not kidding. Look forward to the end of the movie, one of the best endings. This movie made me laugh and cry that's why it's a five!!!!!!
28 Teen movie tries hard, but doens't succeed
For years, I have been hoping for a breakthrough movie about teenagers. Jawbreaker is not that movie. It tries hard to be hip, funny and satirical. Perhaps it tries too hard. This is not to say there are not some good moments in it, but, like most recent entries in this genre, it winds up trashing the audience it is aimed at. This trend, I believe, is at the core of what's wrong with a lot of movies today. More on that later.

Once again we have a high school ruled by a group of tyrannical brats, in this case three girls. [The school, by the way, looks like the ones in every other picture. In Movieland, no schools have been constructed since the end of W.W.II.] In the opening scene, we see Courtney [Rose McGowan], Julie [Rebecca Gayheart] and Marcie [Julie Benz] playing a prank of one of their girlfriends. Wearing masks, they break into her bedroom, tie her up and throw her in the trunk of a car. The idea is to publicly humiliate her. Courtney thought it would be efficient to gag the victim with a jawbreaker, and when they open the trunk, they find their friend has suffocated.

Gruesome as this sounds, many successful comedies have been based on similar events, dating back at least as far as Arsenic and Old Lace in the 1940s. Writer and director Darren Stein, though, does not have the deft, whimsical touch such plot devices require. His lead characters are not bizarre or dizzy, they are simple mean and aggressive. One girl does find a problem with the crime and the attempts to cover it up. Yet it takes her forever to take affirmative action, probably because the movie's theme seems to be that some people will go to any lengths to be popular. When the homely, awkward Fern [Judy Greer] accidentally finds the girls out, Courtney's solution is to offer to transform Fern into someone just like herself. Fern jumps at the chance.

I am not one of those who blames society's perceived anguish over today's teens on sex, violence and alienation in movies and on TV. Way back in 1955, James Dean, Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo played truly troubled young people in Rebel Without a Cause. In 1976, audiences flocked to Carrie, in which a tormented teen with psychic powers got revenge by trying to kill all her classmates at the prom. We delighted at the antics of the sex and drug crazed kids in 1982's Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and we related to an alienated kid in the much praised Heathers [1989], whose solution to his girl friend's troubles was to kill everyone who made her life hell. These subject matters are nothing new, and this list does not include all those gruesome smash hit horror movies.

The difference today, as I mentioned at the beginning, is how lowly the characters are. Every other word they speak is a profanity. If nothing else, this would eliminate a chance for a good script. The teenagers are shallow, they are relentlessly materialistic, and they have zero capacity to think for themselves. While I do know young people who act that way, they are a small minority of the ones I know. The rest may be trendy and a bit obsessed with rebellion, like prior generations, but underneath, they are just as bright and worthwhile as their parents and grandparents were. The way teenagers are represented in entertainment today can have no effect other than lowering their self-esteem, which, in turn can lead to all sorts of problems.

29 Jawbreaker Rocks!
I think "Jawbreaker" is the best movie in the world, it's obviously my favorite movie. This hilarious movie is about three friends, Courtney Shayne (Rose McGowan;"Scream", "Ready to Rumble"), Marcie Fox (Julie Benz; "Satan's School for Girls"), and Julie Freedman (Rebecca Gayheart "Urban Legend", "Scream 2"), who kidnap their friend Liz (Charlotte Ayanna) on her birthday and gag her with an enormous jawbreaker, they tie her up and put her in the trunk of the car, and drive off to a diner. When they open the trunk, they find out Liz swallows the jawbreaker (it's gross there's a huge lump in her throat) and dies. Julie wants to go to the police and tell them it was an accident, but not for Courtney, she dosen't want to get [...](as she says) so she decides to cover it up and make it look like Liz was raped. When they go back to Liz's house to set it up (her parents are on vacation, so that's how they could do this), a geeky girl named Fern Mayo (Judy Greer;"The Wedding Planner") comes to drop off Liz's homework. When Marcie moves her head she screams because she thought Liz looked at her,, so Fern goes to the back door which was left open and goes upstairs while hearing them talk about what to do. Julie says she dosen't want anything to do with it, and goes to open the door, when there is Fern standing there. When she sees Liz dead she goes and runs away. Courtney promises her that if she dosen't tell anyone, they'll make her one of them (beautiful, popular, everything). So Fern, whose name gets changed to Vylette, of course, agrees, and becomes way to popular to be in their "clique". Well, Courtney and Marcie get really mad and put pictures of Fern's school picture all over the school, and everyone turns against her. Well, Julie and her boyfriend Zack (Chard Christ) join with Fern to bring Courtney down. I'm not going to reveal the ending for those of you who haven't seen it, but for those who have, I thought the ending was hilarious.
30 stunk
this movie should have flopped. i expected funnieness in it and i did get some unintentiontal laughs at rose mc gowan. dont watch this its absolutley horrid.
31 Coulda been but wasn't....
This movie, had it been written and acted better, could have been a classic. The elements were there. The plot was there. Maybe it was the editing...I don't know...but there were moments of sheer brilliance, I promise. McGowan's Courtney Shane sums up her influence by telling Vylette that "Courtney Shane is priority 1." Shameless! There should have been more scenes between Foxy and her father (who serenades her with Tiffany's "I Think We're Alone Now") and between everyone and Pam Grier. All of the actresses were too old to play high-schoolers...I think 22 should be the maximum cut-off age, and these girls are pretty well beyond that, especially Rebecca Gayheart, who if she isn't 30 already is definitely scratching at the door. They looked silly next to Tatyana Ali, who still looks young enough to play a high schooler.

Some parts of the film are ridiculous...how would Courtney's having sex with a man in Elizabeth's bed somehow imply that she was raped if there was no physical evidence on the body? If she collected his semen and put it there, we certainly didn't see it. Plus, how did the whole school not realize that Vylette was Fern? I'm sure the teachers knew. Why didn't they? It's ridiculous.

Other than that, decent film, some good laughs, great music. You may prefer to rent it rather than buy it if you've never seen it....people either love or hate this movie, there's no middle ground.

32 "Learn it, Live it, Love it!"
What are three beautiful teen queens to do when they accidentily kill their best friend (by choking her with a JAWBREAKER) as a birthday prank? Well what they end up doing will be having you question how much your friends actually care about you.

Rose McGowan has an uncanny knack for playing evil parts. Her role as "satan in heels" Courtney is very entertaining. Julie Benz cracked me up with her portrayal of the dumb blonde Marcy Fox, or "Foxy" for short. Rebecca Gayheart is the goody-goody (believe me she fits the stereotype) Julie who beleives in doing everything right! Other than getting a little old in the middle, this movie certainly delievers. Again, believe me the plot gets a little repetitve but the dialouge makes up for it big time!

There are some details that if you haven't seen the movie (what's wrong with you?)that shouldn't be revealed, so I'll just keep them to myself. All in all this movie was great and I really appricated it. One last note, if you're looking to laugh you won't find many here (why, think of the classic "Heathers" it's like that). If you're looking for an entertaing film with a good plot, this is for you!! I enjoyed it and i hope you do too!

33 fantastic teen comedy send-up!
JAWBREAKER is a fantastic homage to the classic horror films of the 70's and cult high school films of the 60's.

Three bitchy teen queens (Rose McGowan, Rebecca Gayheart and Julie Benz) are thrown into a frenzy when a birthday prank backfires and they accidentally kill a close friend, a jawbreaker mercilessly lodged in her throat.

Enter the hopelessly dorky Fern Mayo (Judy Greer) who stumbles onto the real reason behind the mysterious death. The girls have no option but to win the girl's silence, and include her in their circle of elite, but not before changing her image and her name...to Violette.

Featuring veteran comedienne Carol Kane and legendary "blaxploitation" star Pam Grier, JAWBREAKER is a superb film, written and directed by the talented Darren Stein.

The DVD includes director's commentary, interviews and behind-the-scenes, music video "Yoo Hoo" by Imperial Teen and the trailer.

34 Death totally bites!
What happens when you accidently kill your best mate on her birthday? Hey lets just put her back in bed and make it look like she was killed.....lurking around the corner is a witness...someone who will tell...what do you do? Make her so popular in return for her silence. Lets meet the lovely girls who commited the crime:

Courtney "Satan in heels" Shayne (played by Rose McGowan) - she's the leader, the one with the power. But will she cover up her deadly secret?

Next we have Marcie Fox "Foxy" (played by Julie Benz) - she very much looks up to Courtney and if Courtney says something it must be right. But will she succeed in covering up her deadly secret?

Then theres the angelic Julie Freedman (played by Rebecca Gayheart) - she knows what they did was wrong and wants nothing to do with happens next. Will she keep the secret or will her angelic personality tell her otherwise?

Then the teen dream herself Elizabeth Purr - she didn't ask to be killed on her birthday did she? Will her death play on her friends minds so much that they finally admit to their crime?

Its non stop teen fun and bitterness until the end! These girls are so obsessed with fashion and popularity that even a crime so close to their hearts can't get in their way.
Watch Jawbreaker - you'll never look at one the same again!

35 GIRLS ARE...
This kind of movie, are ussually stupid. But this one is great!!
You have beautiful Rose McGowan, graet funny and an incredible soundtrack!!!
This one of the best teen movies ever.

36 She's evil, and she's only in high school."
This movie is no major work of art but it is a whole lot of fun for the slightly twisted of you out there (I put myself in that category). This movie always cracks me up. Rose Mcgowan is so good being bad in this movie that it is fun just watching her. She is a real talent. Angel's Julie Denz is also in the movie. While the DVD is not necessarily jam packed with great features as say a Sam Raimi movie would be, it is still worth it to see and hear Rose's performance a little better.
37 deliciously creepy
Occasionally some brilliant movie makers slip in without fanfare what should become a classic in a genre critics love to hate. Critics probably didn't even have to watch this to decide to trash it, but if so they missed a real gem! Rose McGowan is a most tauntingly intirguing villain in a role she was born to play. And Rebecca Gayheart really shines as a major supporting character. Too bad she's so entrenched in TV acting and hence movies are mostly robbed of a wonderful talent. Were it not for the Academy's bias against this kind of movie, those two could have been shoo-ins for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.
Get yourself a video of this, avoid an excessively creepy night, don't eat to much, hold on to your chair and prepare to be thrilled!
38 Do not mess with the fabulous four
I was pretty sure I'd like it since a dear friend said it was something I'd like, so I borrowed it from her. Well it has Marilyn Manson playing a small part, which I'm sure Rose talked them into (thats over), and great music- check out the sound track, and great acting. It includes Rose McGowen who is so great at acting (she leaves you hating, admiring, and wanting more out of her) among many others. Although it has a somewhat dumb plot and a couple of very annoying blonde girls, I like it and it's essence. I'd recommend it to everyone who does or doesnt like teen movies.
39 A piece of excellence!!
All i can say about these three girls is Wooty Woo!!! They are gorgeous aren't they? Anyway Director Darren Stein provides us with a sparkling movie filled with juice, comedy and candy all in one bonus pack of a movie!!
Well Done
40 "Satan in heels" described it best
The first time I ever saw Rose McGowan was when the previews for this movie came out. I was blown away, and looked for her other movies ASAP. Honestly, this isn't the Doom Generation, which is the best movie, in my opinion, for watching Rose at work, but you will have a lot of fun watching her in this one. Jawbreaker does not pack the punch of The Doom Generation, probably because this movie had a wide release and had to satisfy censors, etc. It's more of an eye-candy type of movie... getting to see Rose in a very glamorous role, an in-control queen pulling strings and keeping everyone around her on an edge between laughter and terror (the lunchroom scene, "I'd better never have children..." is priceless). On the socially-redeaming front, she "only" kills one person in Jawbreaker, much less than her body-count in Devil in the Flesh.
41 Terrible shallow movie
I can't see how anyone can like this movie. It tries to be clever and sadistic(like Cruel Intentions) but it just sounds stupid and shallow. The actresses who play these high schoolers are closer to 30 than 17. The ending where Rose McGowan's character gets what's coming to her (again-like Cruel Intentions) just makes you laugh. Rent this movie if you haven't seen it. Don't waste you're money on buying it.
42 Clever and cynical
Okay, okay, I understand that the plot of this movie is somewhat stupid, but as a teen girl, I loved it. The dialogue is clever, although unrealistic. My favorite character is Courtney "Satan-in-heels" Shane. Marcie Fox is your stereotypical dumb blonde, Julie is the angelic one and Liz Purr is the "perfect" teen. I watch this movie so much my parents are sick of it!!!! But, I love it.
43 The best dark comedy since Heathers
This has got to be the best dark comedy since Heathers. The movie is so briliantly funny. It was so funny.Rose McGowan was perfect as the leader of the group.Rebecca Gayheart did a great job as the good girl.Julie Benz was perfect as the dippy one in the group. The movie was perfectly cast.I don't understand why this movie got such trasky reviews. It's awesome!!
44 terrible terrible movie
Even if you are in to the teeny-boper movies, you may not like this one. I was 16 when I rented it and I almost couldn't finish it. I don't know if I did. My boyfriend was even a little irratated that I'd ruined his evening by picking out such a lame movie. WASTE OF TIME! Only buy this movie as a gift for someone whose seen it and already really enjoys it or if you've seen it and like it.
45 A total whatever teen comedy related to HEATHERS!
Rose McGowan stars as Courtney Shayne, the most popular and beautiful teenager in high school along with Julie Benz, Marcy "Foxy" Fox who is Shayne's posse, and also Julie (Rebecca Gayheart), the leggy one, and of course Liz Perr who loses her life and is the main plot in this hot teen flick about betrayl and popularity! A prank brings the whole school to tears after a school queen is killed on her birthday accidentally swallowing a jawbreaker and now her girlfriends must cover it.
46 Worst Movie
The plotline is female three friends (led by Rose McGowan) kill a fourth female friend and try to cover it up, then there is a witness (who is a nerd), so then in return for the witness's silence, they turn her into a popular girl. Eventually one of the three friends breaks away and wants to tell police the truth about their dead friend. Eventually as an added twist everything goes wrong when the now popular nerdy girl becomes more popular than the evil McGowan. This movie is only good for frustrated teen boys. Another thing that bugs me is that there is odd peppy music almost pornoish in sound and as you see on the cover everyone wears bright colors. This is the worst movie I have ever seen, and it is more like a T&A teenage fantasy than a suspense movie.
47 Something Went Horribly Wrong
I wasn't expecting much from this movie ... I was just looking for some mindless fun. Uhh, no. It wasn't funny, wasn't creepy, wasn't even entertaining in a campy kind of way. The story makes no sense, the acting was atrocious and the whole high school situation was *completely* unrealistic. I kept expecting the film to get better, but it didn't. Rebecca Gayheart was the best thing about this movie (and - while I'm sure she's a great girl - that's saying something). Marilyn Manson's cameo is just gross. I like satires and black comedies (e.g. Ravenous), but this movie just left a sour taste in my mouth.
48 this stinks. it's that simple
c'mon. if you want to see a flick that deals with cliques, and high school pranks and splintered friendships, then see the classic "Heathers". this movie tries so desperately to be something it's not. the script is horrible...the direction is horrible...the movie is horrible. get "heathers" and see what this movie wanted to be yet ended up falling flat on its face.
49 Good, but not great
A well executed movie, lots of clever dialog, good cinematography and excellent use of music. The story is arbitrary, but that is irrelevant.
50 A Watered Down "Heathers" for the 90's.
"Jawbreaker" is a Title, a Title looking for a Premise. It may have found a Premise, but someone should have been looking for a Script, cause this film could have used one. I had Heard the Excruciating Reviews, so I waited for video, I wasn't expecting much, so I wasn't really dissapointed, but still, it's not a great movie, it's barely a good one.

The Three Stars, Rose McGowan, Rebecca Gayheart and Julie Benz are all Great Looking, Funny, Charismatic young Actresses. It's a Shame they have to Spew such Lame Dialogue. McGowan is lucky enough to get a Few good Zingers in, but they're too few and far between.

Pam Grier has an amusing extended cameo as the Hard Nosed Detective who see's that something ain't right, and the Cameo by Marilyn Manson is Subtle but Effective and ultimately Vital.

51 Awesome film
The only reason I bought this movie was because Rose McGowan was in it. She played my favourite character in Scream and I was dying to see her in something else. So when I saw this in a shop for £6, I bought it. And am I glad I did! Rose McGowan was excellent playing Courtney. Rebecca Gayheart was good as Julie and so as Julie Benz as Marcie 'Foxy' Fox. I would recommend this film to anyone, so long as you can cope with several close ups of a greying corpse with a massive lump in it's throat. If you haven't done already, rent it out, especially if you're a fan of Rose. She really does give an excellent performance you won't be disappointed by. Well done Rose!
52 A Cheesy Plot but really is a great movie!
This movie really surprised me. The story about how a girl could get so upset with another's popularity that she decided to kill her with a jawbreaker seemed like such a corny idea. But my best friend reccommended it so I tried it anyway. Wow! It turned out to be one of those movies where little lines will pop into your head and stay with you. Rose McGowan played your ideal bad girl. I actually walked out of the theatre not taking to much of a liking towards her. It's got great music as well.

I definitly reccommend this movie's soundtrack so go look that up as well.

53 The Best Movie!! A Must See!!
This movie is the best movie I have ever seen! It's one of those movies you can watch 100 times and still love it! Even though it was sad what happened to Liz Purr the most popular girl at Reagan High, It was GREAT! I could keep write this reveiw and tell you how great this movie was, but I fix'n to sum it up. It was good! Go rent it and I promise, You'll LOVE it! Go rent it today. Don't forget the name,Jawbreaker!! :-)
54 this movie puts 'HEATHERS' to rest
when this movie first premiered all the critics were calling it a rip-off of the 80's classic(if you can call it a classic) HEATHERS but this film was actually entertaining. yeah the plot is only but so believable but its still fun to watch and who can resist rose macgowan. its way better than the boring and just trashy 'heathers'
55 Cheesy, but Funny!!
If you liked "Heathers", you'll like this movie. I do think that it is a bit more dark and definately more warped than heathers, but enjoyable and funny. Rose McGowan was great in this and absolutely gorgeous. The transformation of the ugly duckling and her revenge was perfect. In twenty years it'll be just like those b horror movies of the 50's and 60's we all love so much.
56 Best movie ever
I think that Jawbreaker is the best movie I have ever seen it is intresting and funny. I recommend this movie for teenagers 13-19 anyone else might not get it, or it is way to immuture for them anyone who has not seen this movie i strongly recommend that you do!!!
57 This movie rocks....
This movie is one of my all time favorite because I totally love Rose McGowan. She was made for the part of Courtney Shayne and gave a great performance. She made you want to wish that you could be her. The movie plot was ok but the colorful clothes, songs, and cool cast made this movie a must see. I recommend those who are Rose McGowan's or Rebecca Gayheart's fans to definitely see this movie.
58 jawbreaker = awesome movie!
i really enjoyed this movie. why? because it kinda took a look into what is going on in high school today. at some times, it shocked me, but mostly it made me laugh. i could have gave given it 5 stars, but it kinda disappointed me at the end. i wanted to see Courtney pay for what she did!
59 ...........perfect funny movie!
this is a kind of movie u could watch every day in fact it is very funny and well made. the actors are very good and rose mcgowan is perfect in her part. there are no boring scenes and everything is ok. anyway it isn't a kolossal or something like that...a commedy that works and that will make u laugh 'til the end! i can't give it 5 stars because the performance of the characters isn't perfect but still good. watch it and buy it! believe me..
60 *~*~Jawbreaker*~*
I thought Jawbreaker was one of better movies I've seen. I loved it! Its sort of a mix between a movie like Clueless and another part made up of up sickness. I like Rose McGowan (Courtney) as an actress. They all were good in this comedy. Enjoy!
61 great movie..
My favorite movies include Psycho, The Three Faces of Eve, The Bad Seed,Devil's Advocate, The Sixth Sense, Stigmata, and Jawbreaker. If you had to choose a movie that did not belong in the above group, the obvious choice would be Jawbreaker. I don't like very many newer movies (especially so-called "teen movies"), but this was excellent. I watched this for the first time merely to see the 15 second Manson footage, but, in fact, I ended up adding yet another movie to my list of favorites. Rose McGowan was magnificent in portraying Courtney in her diabolical endeavors, and the movie should be watched by any fan. The only complaint I can think of is that the ending was a little too predictable...but what ending isn't? It's an hour and a half of lovely evil.
62 Naahhhhhhh
I liked this movie better the first time I saw it, when it was called HEATHERS. Seriously, Rose McGowan tried, but couldn't carry the movie. Her voice is so b-tchy, whiny and bratty it got annoying, like someone blowing a kazoo in my ear for 90 minutes. One good thing about her is she is built like a real woman with hips instead of the usual anorexic standard for actresses these days. Kind of like the feminine ideal from the 50's, except all the raunchy tattoos kind of ruin that effect. The cameo by her boyfriend, Mr. Manson, was kind of amusing. But the movie seemed like they were making it up as they went along, and very predictable. Terrible script, and your believability is stretched way too far. After Courtney (McGowan) and her clique kidnap one of their pals, things go awry and she (the pal) ends up dead. They drive around, freaking out, all except for Courtney, who has the brilliant plan to call the high school, pretend to be the dead pal's mom, and call in sick for her. OK, what is one of the first things the police would ask the kid's mom after she turned up dead? Sheeeesh. Rebecca Gayheart's acting is slowly improving. I give this movie two stars, one for Pam Grier, one for the sheer mean-spiritedness and bad taste of it. But that's not enough to save this dog of a movie, and the jailbait band The Donnas weren't enough to save it either. Oh, and I liked the Donnas better the first time I heard them, when they were called The Ramonas and The Runaways. I wouldn't bother, unless you are a big Rose McGowan fan.
63 A dark movie with a great plot..
Definately a good movie! I was drawn to see the movie as soon as the previews came out.. It was cute.. funny.. a tad disturbing.. and played out beautifully. The leading role of Courtney Alice Shayne (McGowen) was by far my favorite.. I think she somewhat over shadowed the rest of the characters (spare perhaps Julie) and overall it was just beautiful. Definately go see this one.
64 VeRy CoLoRfUl MoViE!
The first thing that grabbed me about this movie were the COLORS! From Rose McGowen (Courtney) and her bright red lips and shiny purple nails, to Judy Greer (Fern) with her BRIGHT PINK outfits, to the nasty purple brusies on poor dead Liz Purr's body, the colors of the film will jump out st you. Probably along the whole Jawbreaker/candy theme. It works.

Rose McGowen gives a knockout performance, that perhaps only she could give. She plays evil to a "T" and makes you wish you could be her.

Pam Grier is in this movie as Detective Vera Cruz, and she gives a great performance as well. Her facial expressions scream "I'm irritated" through all of her scenes, and it goes great with her charcter. She is an asset to this film.

The director's commentary is interesting to watch along with the movie, her gives a play-by-play on what happenes in the movie, how it was shot or where, and gives a few behind the scenes tidbits. His voice really works on your nerves after a while though.

The only thing stopping me from giving this movie a 5-star rating is the fact that they give Rebecca gayheart (Julie) a totally uninteresting and useless boyfriend. he DOES NOT need to be in the movie at all. Yes, he comes in handy at the end (I can't say why without giving it away) but what he does at the prom could have easily been done by, say, Fern.

65 more freaky than it is funny
the dead body of Elizabeth Purr really freaked me out with the jawbreaker in her throat.some funny moments in this movie but it is mostly scary to me
66 Heathers want to be
This is a cheap immitation of the excellent 80s dark comedy Heathers. The script was completely stale. This movie fails miserbly on every front.
67 Don't even think about the negetive reviews on this page
We all know the plot. We've heard it a zillion times over before. But, this is undeniably a GREAT film. This film doesn't have humor, I admit it. But, what this film does have is depth, style, and an irrestibly charming and campy appeal. The cast delivers the full range of tones for their characters (McGowen is fiendishly exceptional/Benz is remarkably versatile) and the visual screen effects (while nothing new) are a cut above most other films using the method today. I recommend this film for anyone who likes a good movie, but I automatically count parents out.
68 Good thriller with a bit humor of "Clueless"
The original story, the performance of Rose McGowan (Scream) and the humor makes this a well to watch movie for a fun evening with friends.

Don't expect a masterpiece, just enjoy the movie.

69 Cool
It relates to the way some teens really are and what cliques you are in. I mean sime teenagers are rude and some are as sweet as can be. This movie just represents that and takes it to a hole new level. This is a good movie.
70 the funnest movie since 'Scream'.........
the first time I saw this movie...i couldn't believe how stupid and pointless it was....the second time....i thought about the same thing....but by the third and fourth time...I ended up loving this movie...pay close attention... some of the lines are really really funny...this movie, although having many flaws,is so fun to watch...and it does show the cruel poloitics of high school well...."This is high school, what is a friend anyway"...that ending line sent chills down my back...because it is so true....this film was amazing...see it and enjoy...
71 AWESOME TEEN FILM!
3 friends(Rose Mcgowan - Courtney Shayne aka Satan),(Julie Benz - Marcie Fox aka Foxy),and (Rebecca Gayheart - Julie Freeman aka the leggy one) play a prank on their best friend, Liz Purr (Charlotte Lopez - Liz Purr aka the Princess Dianaof High School) by kidnapping her. But as a twisted stroke of genius evil Courteney gagges her with a huge Jawbreaker. But when they but her back in bed to make it look like rape, a homely girl named Fern walks in and would rat them out. But the 2 willing girls (Courteney and Foxy) gave her a makeover but she turns on them and joins with Julie (Rebecca) to bring them down! Guest appearances by Marilyn Manson (Sick man),and Pam Grier (Vera).
72 I Got Candy
Three girls playing a prank on their best friend for her Birthday realize they killed her (by gagging with a jawbreaker and locking her in their car trunk) and have to adopt a wallflower into their elite when their effort to cover it up fails. As the Prom draws near, the flawless four go into separations and their new investment stabs them in the back. Hilariously entertaining comedy, with all the right touches of sick Marilyn Manson style horror and some of the best quotes in film history come from SCREAM star McGowen. A must-see.
73 This movie is GREAT!
When I first watched this movie i thought it was absoloutly clever! I really enjoyed it. I love this movie because u have no clue what will happen next! All the characters are great!
74 GREAT FLICK!
THIS WAS BY FAR ONE OF THE BEST FLICKS OUT THERE! IT WILL CERTAINLY BECOME A CULT-CLASSIC. THE CAST IS YOUNG AND WONDERFUL...THE STORY IS HIP AND HILARIOUS.

FIRST, I GUESS YOU NEED TO KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT THEM...THE BEAUTIFUL ONES. THE FLAWLESS FOUR. YOU KNOW 'EM...THEY WENT TO YOUR SCHOOL, TOO. FIRST THERE'S COURTNEY (McGOWAN) WHO WAS LIKE SATAN IN HEELS...AND HER PAWN MARCIE (BENZ), A LEGEND IN HER OWN LITTLE MIND. THEN THERE IS JULIE (GAYHEART) DOOMED TO BE POPULAR BECAUSE OF THAT FACE...AND LASTLY THE TEEN DREAM HERSELF, LIZ PURR... WHEN AN ORDINARY KIDNAPPING PRANK LEAVES THE FURTURE PROM QUEEN DEAD (ACCIDENTALLY GAGGED WITH A JAWBREAKER), A DEADLY SWEET PRANK LEADS TO COVER-UP MAKEOVER IN THIS EDGY AND UNPREDICTABLE COMEDY. BUT THERE WILL BE NO MERCY AS PROM NIGHT ARRIVES, AND THIS SPIRITED TALE COMES TO ITS CRULE CONCLUSION...

ROSE DELIVERS A TERRIFIC PERFORMANCE AS A BITCHY (AND EVIL) HIGH SCHOOL PRINCESS. REBECCA PULLED OFF HER ROLE AS AN INNOCENT TEEN. JULIE TOOK HER ROLE SERIOUSLY AS COURTNEY'S CLOSE HENCHMAN. OTHER GREAT PERFORMANCES BY ETHAN ERIKSON, JUDY GREER, PAM GRIER, CHAD CHRIST AND MOSTLY CAROL KANE. BUY THIS FILM NOW!

75 rebecca gayheart in jawbreaker
I would suggest this movie for rent and not for purchase unless you are a fan of rebecca gayheart or rose mcgowan. This was just another teenie-bopper flick that didn't have anything that i could remember.
76 Gotta See It!
Everyone wanted to be them. You know who they are. Every high school has girls like them. They rule. First there was Courtney, also known as Satan in heels, self-elected "most popular." Then there was Marcy Fox, known to the rest of the world as Foxy, a legend in her own little mind. And Julie, doomed to be popular because of that face AND because she was best friends with Liz Per. Everyone loved Liz. Not just because she was smart, rich, popular, or beautiful. Even though she was all those things, everyone loved Liz because, well, she was sweet. It's a shame about what happened to Liz. That's no way to wake up on your 18th birthday........

"Omigod! What's in her throat? Courtney?" Julie is so upset by the death of her best friend. But she just can't tell what happened on that horrible morning. The morning her whole world turned around. How can she prove that Courtney did it? That Courtney killed her? Buy Jawbreaker and see!

77 Don't even think about it.
I made the mistake of buying this incredibly bad movie right here at Amazon, and I'd like to tell everyone not to do the same thing. Everything is wrong here, girls change constantly from being quite evil to being saints; I can buy Rose McGowan, she is evil and stays that way (although her performance is basically one-note). But Gayheart's part is a joke. Why did she hang out with McGowan when she has such a good heart in the first place? This just doesn't add up. Certainly, "Heathers" it isn't, no way! There is a commentary track on the DVD and obviously the director had fun making the movie. Unfortunately, the viewing experience is painful.
78 God Awful
This is quite possible the worst movie I have ever seen. I can not believe I am admitting to have sat through it. It clearly tried to be Heathers but it doesn't even come close. The plot is ridiculous, the story goes nowhere, there aren't any likable character, all of the characters are undeveloped, many parts of the story line just don't make any sense, it's annoying, disturbing and bad. Usually I like annoying, disturbing and bad, but this wasn't good.
79 Carrie Meets The Heathers
I was totally impressed by this movie. It is amazing. It has been 7 years since I graduated and I can honestly say that Darien Stein captured the horrors of the high school higharcy. Rose McGowan portrays the character Courtney as if she was born to play it. The Marylyn Mansion cameo is so awesome. It reminds me of the heathers mixed up with Carrie. Rebecca Gayheart just knows how to do the whole sweet innocent girl act. If there is any version to own it is definitely the DVD. The Commentary by Stein is so fantastic it really adds to the enjoyment of this feature. I watched the director's commentary with the subtitles so I could follow what was going on while listening to how the picture was brought into being. After viewing the movie and myself picking up some of the visual imagery it was fantastic to see how the director intended it to be that way. The whole creation of the Jawbreaker in the beginning and How Stein intended the visual imagery that was definitely apparent; shows that at least someone in Hollywood is tying to give us value for a seven Dollar movie and especially a home video. The only purpose to purchase the video is to view the movie at home as many times as you like; at you're own time so you can catch all the things you missed the first time, but do not wish to pay 7$ a pop to see it at the theater some 10 times. The purpose of owning a DVD of the video is to have more features than VHS can give. Such as Special Features, Subtitles, the Original Trailer that attracted you're attention when you viewed the movie, as well as great picture quality. "Tri-Star" delivers all this and more with "JAWBREAKER" My only gripe is I wish they had put the Girls theme song YOOHOO video in the special features.
80 Pretty Good
I was really excited about seeing this at first cause im a big fan of Rose Mcgowan but i must say i was a bit shocked at how bad it was yet like all bad movies i always end up loving them, i dunno why it always happens, but i was somewhat drawn to this film, i just watched it over and over i really enjoyed it after a few times, its a great movie dark, funny, and everythign you need to make a hit these days, i recommend it!
81 Jawbreaker?
If you're thinking about watching Jawbreaker because you want a solid storyline, then don't.

It doesn't have one.

Jawbreaker is supposed to be about three high school friends who lose their best friend, Liz ,after an innocent prank goes wrong. They spend the entire movie trying to cover up her death and play it off as a murder. Unfortunately, the school geek, Fern, has seen the body and knows who really killed Liz. So Courtney ( Rose McGowan ) makes a deal with Fern that she can't refuse: If Fern keeps her trap shut, then Courtney will make her popular. ( Fern changes her name to Violett after becoming popular )

If only they would have stuck to that basic plotline, then the story would have been more solid..

The movie had a lot of holes and loose ends left, and just some downright ridiculous parts, for example: when Fern/Vilett is "dancing" on the hood of her brand new red convertible while surrounded by a gawking crowd... need I say more? And the cheesy " You're never going to get away with this.." lines just need to go. I felt like I was watching a bitchy scooby doo flick at times..

BUT... the movie has its redeeming qualities.

For instance, I personally think that Rose McGowan plays her character Courtney beautifully. ( If you could call it that.. ). I always admire someone who can really pull of playing a bad guy in a flick, and she really can. Of course, as the movie progresses, her character does get a little hokey.

The supporting characters were good, but they really didn't help the plotline all that much.

But bringing Marilyn Manson into the film, who can be seen here without all of the gruesome stage makeup, was really a neat twist, seeing as he and McGowan were or still are dating. I'm not really a Manson fan myself, but I wasn't expecting to see him in a movie, even if his girlfriend was in it.

If you like Quentin Tarantino style movies, then you would like this one, because it obviously is one. The costumes are good, and the movie is definately original in some aspects.

But.. if you are the kind of person who doesn't really get into the deeper meaning of movies and who likes to be able to understand what you are watching, then Jawbreaker is definately not for you. At least, not to own.

82 Save yourself
This was one of the five worst movies I have ever seen. It was gross, attempted to be artsy fartsy, and frighteningly strange at some parts. After I got done watching the movie I wanted to take a shower and pray the rosery to cleanse both my body and soul. It sucked.
83 Heathers - Lite
Fun movie..Like a previous reviewer said "Heather's meets Clueless". It definitely tickeled my sick sense of humor and if you don't expect to much out of it you should enjoy it too. My only nitpick is that it tries to convince the viewer that that the police would have fallen for the (rather unbelievable) death scene the girls wind up creating. After all, it is stated she is a virgin at one point, doesn't the medical examiner catch that in the autopsy? Also, I wish the investigating detective had been developed a bit better as she starts out tough and you think a potential match for the head of the group but winds up being a gullible boob. Overall a good movie to while away a Sunday afternoon on.
84 The Critics Are Harder On This Than A Gobstopper!
I have never seen a dark comedy (at least I think I haven't). So this is a good introduction. Everyone who's criticizing it probably thinks it's exaggerative, yet stereotypical adolescent behavior. But that's the amusing part- Rose McGowan took oblivion, cold-heartedness, and superficiality to a higher planteau than the norm (the clothes looked great). And Julie Benz played the team ditz to a "T"... what a dingbat! Rebecca Gayheart, I thought was insane for leaving the clique, yet I thought her moral character outshined the darker. And Elizabeth Purr, well... had no role (but she looked quite iced). The makeover of the nerd was typical, yet they put a twist on it, and she metamorphed into an egotistical tramp. But all 'n all, this is a good movie to watch when you can spare 2 hours. The plot is not the hated abomination that everyone makes it out to be. Yes, the backfiring of McGowan's scheme (her recorded words resounded with callousness within the silence of the room) was predictable, yet I found it extremely hilarious because it was like "dead air," & everyone threw their corsages (or punch cups) at her. 'Jawbreaker' has it's dark and humourous highlights (almost too dark to be even close to real!)
85 Heathers this ain't
At first veiwing, I thought this would be a dark comedy, and it starts like one: death of a long-time friend first evokes panic, then is replaced by an almost callous attitude ( as seen in the high school bathroom ) and eventually deception and betrayal follow. The bright settings and clothes are a stark contrast to their grim deed, and Rose Mcdowell plays her role wonderfully. Unfortunatley the plot soon turns ho-hum as the movie progresses, losing it's scathing humour and becoming cliched in its "thwarting the evil ploys" of Mcdowell. Also, there were numerous plot holes in the movie, especially concerning the "crime scene" and the police' acquiring of the suspect. I guess the only comparison to this movie would be Heathers, which far out shines this pale copy.
86 Not bad!
Rose McGowan plays the perfect high school princess type (picture a 90s teenage Rhoda Penmark from "The Bad Seed")on her vicious little escapades. I won't call it a cinematic masterpiece (which I doubt was the intent) but it's got a good soundtrack, and it's good campy slumber-party fun.
87 Clueless meets Heathers
Rose McGowan kicks serious booty in this movie, and it inspired me to rent the directors cut of Doom Generation. Its easy to see why Marilyn Manson was attracted to Rose, yet what the heck did she see in him? I love your music Marilyn, however, you are uglier than sin in this movie. If you liked Heather or Clueless, you'll love this movie. Its destined to be a cult classic, especially at all girl sleep overs.
88 My new Favorite
Wow! This movie is awesome. Yes, on the surface it appears totally shallow(it is). It is extremely funny and worth seeing again and again. It is well worth anyone's time. I recommend this without a doubt.
89 REAL BAD
Don't ever see this movie, it is horrible. It's not even alittle funny. Don't waste your time
90 really terrible
The movie is simply not worth watching. The characters are, to put it charitably, one dimentional. The soundtrack is the only thing making it worthy of attention.
91 Roses are red........... and sometimes evil
If you are a hard core Rose fan, then watch this movie... if not, then don't. I liked it. It might have been a little stupid at times but, those are the best kind of movies. Watch and find out for yourself.
92 I am petrified
The movie starts out with 3 girls waking up their friend, stuffing a jawbreaker in her mouth, putting duct tape over her mouth, tying her legs together, and then throwing her in the trunk of their car and driving to a gas station. When they open the trunk (after some hard off road driving) they seem strangely perplexed and shocked to find out their friends has somehow expired in the trunk. As the girls gape at the unsightly bulge in her throat, they begin to spaz. But relax, Rose McGowan is NOT petrified. She simply calls the girl in sick. After various escapades including the positioning of the "teen dream's" body, a brief stint with Marilyn Manson (you don't want details, trust me), helping the dorky girl become popular so she'll keep her mouth shut, and ultimately, Rose winning prom queen and then being exposed during her acception speech. If you feel compelled to rent this, do what my friends and I did: make yourself one of the characters. Fer real.
93 very entertaining.
This movie was very funny, but stupid at times. The performances were extremely well done, and Rebecca Gayheart looked amazing. Rose Mcgowan and Julie Benz were also very good in it took, and Rose can play an excellent villan, because she looks so evil in this movie, but she's very hot.
94 Wow
Wow, like this movie was really cool. I just couldn't believe how the girls, they like wore these stylish clothes. I mean, like that is why I always watch movies for the such stylish clothes. Like, i really loved the underwear that liz was wearing i rushed out to buy a pair just like them after watching this movie my mom says i am a necro ever since the accident with the microwave i have been attracted to movies like these...watch it today!!!!!!!
95 If you want to waste 2 hours see this movie!
Okay the previews are better than the movie it's self. I mean the only good part was the sex sceen with Marilyn Manson. I really thought that they ripped off HEATHERS. I really like Rose but that was it. I think that was a waste of my life and my money.
96 Good twisted fun
When I first saw this movie, I didn't know what to expect, it coming out about the same time as Carrie 2 and other "teen death" flicks. However, it was a very good movie, worth buying when the price drops. There were some tedious moments in the film, along with moments where you wish that a rabid squirrel would drop out of a tree and bite somebody, anybody.
97 If your bored, u'll enjoy it
When i first saw the preveiws for this movie, i just figured it was gonna be another stupid movie and a waste of time. But, surprisingly, it wasnt that bad. The storyline was hysterical. Who would of thought, killin ur best friend on her b-day by shoving a jawbreaker down her throat? Then on top of that, havin the biggest "nerd" find out u did it! Me and my friends had a ball crackin on it, but neverless we did enjoy it. Itz definatly not a must see, but if you n your friends are bored go out and rent it, u can get a lotta cracks out of this one!
98 I thought it would've been better...
I thought this movie was good, but at the same time I thought it could've been better. The movie has some really talented and fresh faces in it, especially Julie Benz. The movie had a good concept to it, but I just thought that Rose McGowan's character as being the meanest of the mean was taken to an extent that was too far. Other than that, her deviousness was superb. I need to see this movie again since the soundtrack is great.
99 this movie rocks !!!!!
Jawbreaker is a must see movie. it's totally cool. Rose McGowan potrays her character perfectly, and i love the clothes she wears in the movie. Rose does a wonderful job playing an evil popluar girl, who is mean to an innocent, geeky girl. it reminds me of the pepole at my school. I think it was funny. Rose, keep up the great work ! you are my idol !
100 Unoriginal And For The Most Part Bland
This movie reminds me of the film that came out around ten years age called Heathers, only Jawbreaker isn't as good. This movie is quite prosaic and unoriginal. There's nothing new or surprising. The acting is fine, and the plot is okay, but that doesn't always add up to make a great film. Not recommended. Forgettable and predictable. Watch Heathers instead.

Quote of the Day:

Even the best of friends cannot attend each other's funeral.

-- Kehlog Albran, "The Profit"

I argue very well. Ask any of my remaining friends. I can win an argument on
any topic, against any opponent. People know this, and steer clear of me at
parties. Often, as a sign of their great respect, they don't even invite me.
