1 Great for daytime, mediocre for nighttime.
The title says it all - daytime pictures are crisp, clear, and brilliant color. Incredible, actually. The detail is great, and the pictures are incredibly lifelike.
Nighttime pictures utilizing flash are mediocre - they come out grainy and the colors are a bit on the muddy side.
I frankly don't know if it's an underpowered flash or just the nature of the beast; even close-up flash, where the power of the flash shouldn't really matter, comes out the same way.
However, I must temper this with two possible explanations - 1) that nighttime pictures just [are poor] because they do with any camera - I haven't tried other cameras or 2) - my expectations are out of whack because the daytime pictures are just so darned good.
2 Very good camera
This camera is a very good product. I have taken more than 5000 photos with it and the majority of pictures are great. If you are looking for a good camera at a very good price, then this is your camera of choice.
3 Awesome for the beginner
I've got 2000 35mm photos, and I've always wanted a digital camera. I purchased this one, after months of research, in Mar 01. Simply put, it's been the best purchase I've ever made. I love it. It's simple, I never have to change from the default settings, it takes beautiful pictures, and everyone thinks it's really expensive. The quality of the photos is unbelieveable. You won't want to switch from the 1MB .jpeg files. The USB/VHS cables work great. I've literally had NO PROBLEMS out of this camera. If there could be some improvements, I'd like for the flash to work a little better. Also, you have to pay attention and have the trigger half-pulled to get those action shots, but I think that's to be expected with a digital camera. I bought this camera..and got the 128MB compact flash card... The compact flash card is much cheaper now. I can walk around and take 120 1MB, high quality pictures, outdoors and NEVER run the one battery I own out of juice. That was a big concern of mine, but it's really no problem. You won't need the extra battery and charger. If you love to take photos, and you're not an expert, I highly recommend this camera. (This is not a BS write-up, I really do recommend it.)
4 What's not to like?
There are very few things not to like about this camera and they are far out weighted by the many things this camera does. I don't like the overall feel of the camera, it feels cheesy. I don't like the LCD in the sun, you must use a shade to see it. But that is really nit picking once you get down to the features that include saturated color for overcast days-it's like putting Fuji Velvia in a film camera to punch up color. Black and white with red and yellow filters as well as sepia and I don't have to carry filters! I love kicking back, with the camera hooked up to my TV, and watch the slide show feature on a big screen, which you can do because the images are so sharp. I purchased the wide angle attachment and, although it has some distortion primarily when photoing buildings, it is sharp. 11X14" prints come out looking like a lab did them when you shoot in raw mode. Here's a tech tip -put the camera on a tripod, set the ASA to 400, set the film to black and white and hold a wratten 87 filter in front of it while exposing and get the look of black and white infrared film. This camera puts fun in photography and is well worth the price.
5 Just great pics, no gimmicks
I took a photography class in college and have owned various Nikon SLR's. This was the first digital point and shoot that satisfies both easy carrying and wife use and still is super high quality. The guy who says its garbage on close up shots should have checked the Kodak website and done the firmware update, the new software fixed that glitch. The update was super easy to do. This camera won me a photo contest with a pic of my cat, and it constantly amazes us with its quality pics, and I hardly use anything but the 2.2 megapixel or LESS. The exposure controls 2stops +/- are excellent and right on top of camera. Depth of field is also on top, easy to use. A diopter is given on the view finder. (...) The battery is a high quality one and lasts a decent amount of time if you don't use the screen much. Only non's want to use the screen anyway, use the viewfinder.
I would like to have a remote for slide shows on TV, and maybe movie capacity but like my review is titled, this is a very solid camera (fell on it once on a rock) that just takes awesum pictures. The software is basic, you can only transfer files pretty much, but I already had some olympus software for editing.

FYI - We use amazon's o-photo service and love their service. Its by Kodak as well and provides fast service that has not dissappointed us.

6 Simply AWESUME
This 4800 is of finest quality, well engineered, light, controls are well placed, and the pictures are simply AWESUME !!!
7 Not for everyone...
I've shot about 600 picture with the DC4800, and some of them turned out very good, however a lot of them didn't. This camera can be manipulated to almost every situation but in many everyday conditions it just seemed to have problems. I would bracket shots, try every combination of adjustments, and often not end up with a usable picture. I even exchanged my frist one for another unit because of poor focusing.
Finally I got tired of the thing and got a Canon S110 instead. It doesn't have as many user variables, but never the less it delivers way better and consistant picures.
Sure the Kodak has a higher pixel count, and a better lens, but for my needs the Canon does a better job. Add the compact size, which means you'll be more likely to have it when the opportunity arises, and the Canon is a tough act to beat.
One nice feature both these cameras share is that they both feel solid, they have good heft. The S110 feels like it's milled from solid blocks of stainless steel and glass. The Kodak is close. Most other digital cams feel plasticky and cheap in comparisson.
8 kodak dc4800 personal review
I own 2 Kodak dc4800 cameras and would not even consider another camera for my own personal use. This camera is full featured, menu driven and no other camera in this price range has the dc4800's ease of use and/or picture quality. The camera also comes complete with software for setting up your camera and extracting pictures from the camera and transferring them to hard-drive or disk. For the money, this is the best camera on the market in my estimation. I reviewed and tried quite a number of cameras. This camera is overwhelmingly the top of the line; again, with ease of operation and price favorability.
9 A lot of very nice features at a very attractive price
I have used this camera extensively now for six months and I am still very happy with what it does for me. As all cameras, it has a couple of quirks and drawbacks such as limited power supply, average image quality, as well as no longer being a state-of-the-art camera. However, the BIG pluses are the quick and easy to learn and use hardware and software interfaces, a PC contact for external flash units, great color performance, and most of all the 28mm wide-angle lens!!! I would recommend this camera even at this late date to first-time digicam users.
10 Kodak 4800
An easy to use Digital camera, with plenty of functionality and flexibility. I completely recommend this camera for entry level users to expert users as the camera has a good depth.
11 VERY NICE CAMERA... FOR EXPERTS AND NON EXPERTS !!!
I am an artist and need pictures taken all the time, everywhere, so I can reproduce them in my paintings... the camera is been so helpfull because I don't have to wait for developing films. I snap a shot and thats it. Beautiful pictures, colorfull, neat, full of light. The only thing is that the camera comes with a 16 mfc instead of a 128. The battery also gives you no more than 3 hrs of use. Except for that I think its a very good one. I would like to learn more about photography, speed, light, exposure etc, so in the future I will be able to manage it manually, which I think it is the best way to take perfect pictures.
12 Fantastic value for an A-! digicam
Bought this camera in April and have taken hundreds of pics with this versatile camera, indoors and out. I just keep it on auto mode in all departments and it does a great job in bringing me the pics I want. Garnished this camera with a 128 MB compactflash card, extra battery w/case and the complete lens kit
and this baby doesn't stop surprising me with its quality work. Even 8 1/2 X 11 size pics come out as sharp and clear as a 4 X 6.
One of the best buys I ever made on a camera (I have plenty of film cameras that I will retire).
13 Good camera for a novice (me)
I bought the Kodak 4800 after some quick reviews of other digital cameras in this price range. I supplemented the camera with the additonal battery pack and carrying case, and the battery charger is a lifesaver (although the case was worthless).
The camera takes good pictures, has an easy-to-use features setting and the battery life is pretty good, although I felt more comfortable with a backup battery.
The only thing I didn't like is the feel of the camera in my hand, although I eventually got use to it. I'd prefer something a little smaller, and the 4800 has some weird angles with the lens and buttons.
Overall, it's been a great camera for a novice photographer.
14 DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA
This has to be the worst camera I have ever taken a picture with. Compare this camera picture quality of DETAIL to another with good quality like a Nikon, there is no comparison. Nikon hands down. I don't know if any of you who left a review have ever taken detailed up close shots with this but the detail and clarity is simply blurred. GARBAGE!!! Get a Nikon 950, 990, or a 880. Nikon can make a camera!
15 Kodak's DC4800 is a winner
I have been using a Kodak DC4800 since last June. This is an excellent digital camera that takes excellent pictures. One thing that disappoint me is the weak built-in flash unit. Most of the digital cameras on the market today has the same problem, not only the Kodak DC4800. I am using an external Vitivar 285 flash unit with an L type of flash bracket with the Kodak DC4800. Now, the indoors flash pictures are very nice when I use the Vitivar 285 flash unit. The outdoors pictures that this camera takes are just breath taking, excellent. I am very happy with the Kodak DC4800. The first thing that I brough for the DC4800 is a 128MB CF card and an extra battery w/charger. The reason that I brough the Kodak DC4800 digital camera was for the 28mm wide angle lens, the small size and that it can be use as a Point & Shoot camera. And it was the less expensive 3.x MP digital camera on the market at that time. Highly recommend this digital camera to anyone.
16 A camera for power users!
In case you're womdering... the "internet bundle" included in this camera means that you get a 64MB flash card instead of 16MB, and you get an extra rechargable Li-Ion battery. You definitely need both items. (You can survive with 16MB if you carry your computer with you everywhere so you can contstantly empty the memory.) You have to have an extra battery for this camera. The Kodak supplied battery is only rated at 3.7V and 1100mA-hours, which isn't as much as a camera with 4AA batteries usually gets. (4 Ni-MH provide about 4.8V and 1200mA hours!) And Kodak's special battery is the only one this camera takes!! So you'll need an extra for sure.
The pictures themselves are excellent. You get a 3x zoom lens, a choice between ISO equivalents of 100, 200, and 400, MORE than enough shutter speeds, and there are 3 choices of aperture (f/2.8, f/5.6, and f/8). You can have manual control over all of these settings or let the camera automatically choose, although with the automatic control the camera doesn't always take very good pictures. If you take control, however, and you know what you're doing (and its easy to learn!) you will always get good pictures with this camera.
The reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 is Kodak's choice to include its own expensive battery instead of using cheaper rechargables, and the fact that the camera doesn't do very well on the automatic setting.
17 Awesome new camera from Kodak, well worth it.
This new Kodak digital camera's color and sharpness is unbelievably crisp and clear. Includes all software for editing on your PC. This is a great camera to bring on a long trip or just shooting around for fun. Recommendation: Buy
