1 Disappointed
I bought this stereo based on the customer reviews and of course the low price. I returned it. The CD player worked for only a few hours before conking out. The digital tuner did not tune stations as well as I can with my other, non-digital radios. But most of all I was disappointed with the sound quality. It was very poor in my opinion and sounded like I was listening to it in the bathroom.
2 SURPRISING VALUE for this price.
I purchased this unit after reading the other reviews, but still had a surprise coming! The unit is better than I had anticipated. The look is great, and the speaker quality is as good as units costing a lot more. I wanted a good radio - for listening to Public Radio, and also the sound quality to listen to my classical CDs. The small remote is more than adequate. I would recommend this minisystem to anyone - and it fits on a shelf very neatly!!
3 CORRECTION TO MY EARLIER REVIEW
Excellent bookshelf stereo. Remote Control DOES work the radio tuner. Being a simple minded 'blue collar' guy, I couldn't figure it at first [the first 3 hours after I opened it, then wrote my review the next day, before double checking it]... ANYWAY, it's a great little unit. Buy it, whenever it's back in stock. Oh and the Amazon.com folks got it to me packed extremely well and in only 4 days!
4 Pretty Good for the price
Got this for Christmas a few days ago. We're using it in our den. Good bookshelf stereo. Sound is really good. Convenient to use for a family with limited stereo 'Know-how.' We like it because the CD door opens easily in limited space. We like the tuner too. Cassette operation is easy and it makes great tapes off of the CD. Be sure to get higher quality blank tapes though. Remote control only operates the CD, hince 4 star rating, but what can you expect for only eighty bucks. We listen to a WIDE variety of music on it and it all sounds good, listening to Cranberries right now, swing, bluegrass, celtic, reggae, blues and of course rock-n-roll sound good on this system, but surprisingly the speakers give good high, mid and low range sounds with classical as well. Good choice for limited budget.
5 Excellant Bday Present for daughter
I must say - I was a bit nervous about buying something online this big. No problems tho! But you can imagine my surprise. This unit is fantastic. The sound is clear, nice balence, tapes well from cd or radio. The digital tuning is definately a plus. The remote, is larger, but you can control everything but the tape player. I was very impressed on the quick shipping just in time to wrap it up, for my daughters bday present. Now... to shop for a cd case!
6 An Excellent Buy
Anyone who wants a high-quality CD player, tape player, and AM/FM radio for a very reasonable price should seriously consider buying this model. It includes speakers, all necessary cords, a remote control, and a guarantee. The sound can only be described as splendid and on top of everything else the machine has a very handsome appearance!
7 You get what you pay for
In all honesty, I bought this because it was the cheapest CD/tape/tuner combo on Amazon at the time I got it. This is probably the reason you're looking at it, too. It's not a bad system, but don't expect the features that a nicer (and more expensive) system offers. For example, the remote control isn't all that great--it doesn't have numbers on it, only a few poorly designed buttons, so you can't quickly switch between presets--you can just scroll through them. Also, you can't use the remote to switch between functions (tuner, CD, tape)--you have to manually do that on the unit itself. And the remote doesn't work for the tape decks. Also, the unit has no audio-in ports, so you can't run your computer through it or tape something off of anything else. I expected a little more.
8 Want the circuit diagram for Koss model HG856
I bought this systmem in Best Buy, Cobb Parkway opp to Ritz Camera , Atlanta GA, I was using it at my home - it worked very nicely.. after my US assignment I had to leave the country.. packed my system KOSS HG856 in my cabin baggage... it went through X-ray screens in ATlanta, hartsfield, London heathrow and delhi.. after I landed here the system is not working.. only the red light comes if i switch it on.. and not the green light.. wondering if the memory is locked.. i didnt bring the catlog from there.. can anyone help me in sending me a copy of the circuit diagram.. of that model.. without that its difficult to trace the problem.

9 Good Quality at a Great Price
I bought an older version of the Koss CD system several years ago and paid more for it. This system has been updated and improved aesthetically plus they have added a digital tuner and remote; furthermore, anyone familiar with Koss knows they build quality systems. You cannot do any better in the sound department so unless you are willing to spend big bucks on your system this product is the way to go. The Koss CD system will not disappoint you!

I don't really understand why so many people rated it with 5 stars? It's not worth it. The sound is poor, espacially the bass. I don't like it at all.

I'm writing from SouthAmerica and have some comments about: Good product. Very Low price. Great value. Don't expect a high-end product but for the price you get a little all-in-one that you can keep close to you if you don't have enough room at home or office. Good design, DBBS System, CD player, AM/FM radio tuner, remote control, Digital Tuner and well designed speakers. So, for all SouthAmerican buyers I strongly recommend to buy this pretty all-in-one.

The Koss Portable CD player is the best investment you could ever make. The quality of the 3-way speakers are excellent, the radio comes in nicely, and the cassete play-back is great. You could have one tape start playing when the other one is done. The CD function is the best. You could listen to the first 10 seconds, or the whole thing. And the tuner lets you fast-forward through a track, like a cassete. No more having to replay a 8-minute track to hear your favorite 5-seconds. It also has a bass option, and a headphone jack. It also comes with a great remote control. This will be the best CD player you will ever buy.

It's great, the best thing I ever bought. I got it as a mothers day gift and it is amazing. Great sound and features, I love the remote. I would pay more money for it because it is comparable. One downfall. The lenth of the speaker wires is small, like 4 feet. I wanted my speakers farther apart (on the top of a book case) so I went out and bought 30 feet of speaker wire for $3.50. It was the best bucks I ever invested for the entire package.
If you want a good system, this is your best bet!
