Compatible with VirginMobile cell phone service, the Kyocera Slider V5 is the first ever *MTV- branded wireless phone. *MTV (notice the asterisks) is a new wireless outlet for MTV-style stuff that's designed specifically for your phone--such as ring tones, alerts, games, video voting, news, and more. *MTV is accessible right from the Slider's top level menu, so whether you want to hear "Right Thurr" by Chingy, or "Take it Off" by the Donnas when your phone rings, it's all there for you.
The Slider gets its name from its snappy keypad-protection system. When the phone is closed, only the screen and navigation buttons are accessible. To make a call, you just slide the outside case up with your thumb to reveal the keypad underneath. The Slider sports a 65,000 color, 128x128 pixel display, much of which is customizable, including its background screens, backlight, and wallpaper. You can also adjust speaker and button volume. For getting online, the Slider provides a WAP browser, plus EMS text and picture messaging with predictive text input.
The phone operates in CDMA 800 / 1900 mode, and features one-touch and voice-activated dialing, a speakerphone, 15 built-in MIDI ring tones, polyphonic ring tone capability, and vibrate alert. The Slider's phone book holds 200 listings, and, for talking in crowded indoor or outdoor environments, the Slider also comes with Smart Sound software, which can automatically adjust the volume of a call based on the surrounding noise level. There's even an emergency GPS feature that lets 911 operators know your phone's position.
For your personal organization, the Slider includes a scheduler, calculator, alarm clock, and a stopwatch. For fun, you'll get 4 pre-loaded games: Tetris, Brick Attack, Race 21, and Doodler. The Slider's *MTV connection also lets you download familiar-yet-unfamiliar sounding games such as "Rock, Paper, Shizzle (sic)", "Fangram", and the potentially interesting "Yearbook Trivia". Additionally, VirginMobile service provides access to VirginXtras: which means even more downloadable tones, movies, and fun stuff.
The Kyocera Slider V5 includes a Lithium Ion battery good for about 4 hours of talk time and 4 days standby time, and a charger. It weighs 3.2 ounces and measures 3.4 x 1.9 x 0.9 inches.
The Kyocera Slider V5 from Virgin Mobile offers diminutive size with a unique sliding form factor that makes it very pocket-friendly. Under the hood, the phone features a brilliant color screen, gaming, support for Virgin Mobile's wireless Internet services, and voice-activated dialing.
Design
The V5's sliding design allows you to reveal the keypad with a push of the thumb. The phone's 128 x 128 display supports 65,000 colors. Most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button. The top right side of the unit houses an extendable antenna while the phone's charging port is housed on the unit's bottom edge. The phone also features a standard jack to accept universal hands-free headsets.
Calling Features
The V5's built-in address book can store up to 200 entries for quick and easy management of your contacts. The phone comes with built-in polyphonic ringtones plus a vibrating alert. Ringtones can be assigned to specific callers so you don't have to look at the phone to know who's calling. Voice dialing is supported so you can dial numbers quickly and easily. A built-in speakerphone lets you talk handsfree while you're on the go. Finally, a sensor automatically adjusts call volume to accommodate the loudness of your environment.
Messaging, Internet and Tools
The V5 covers the messaging basics with support for sending and receiving text and picture messages (Virgin Mobile text messaging charges apply). T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.
The phone fully supports Virgin Mobile's wireless content service, VirginXtras. Use the pay-per-use service to download ringtones, get content and vote in TV-based polls via the MTV area of your phone, or get jokes and updates from Comedy Central. Pick a celebrity voice to answer your voicemail, or get a Sponge Bob thought of the day. Need to jog your memory? Use Virgin's wacky song ID service. Press the Song ID command, point your V5 towards a song that's playing in the room, and within minutes a text message appears identifying the song's title.
The V5 ships with a number of handy tools including a calendar, a calculator and an alarm clock. A voice memo application lets you record brief notes for later retrieval.
Entertainment
The phone features custom Virgin Mobile graphics-- screen savers, wallpaper and menu icons-- that let you dress up your phone to suit your personality. The V5 is also a great gaming partner; four preloaded games are included and more are available via the VirginXtras service.
Vital Statistics
The Kyocera Slider V5 weighs 3.39 ounces and measures 3.46 x 1.89 x .98 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 3.5 hours of digital talk time, and up to 100 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the CDMA 800/1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

1 Slider V5 se 47
I love my virgin mobile v5 phone. its small, compact, and best of all it slides instead of flips. I've had no problems with it at all, the text messaging is great, the games are great. I really like tetris. and *mtv and virgin xtras are espescially useful because you can get ringtones for your phone from your phone. you can also add airtime to your account right from your phone! overall, if your thinking about getting this, you should. A+
2 Hot phone
this phone has many great features like quick open, color wallpapers, poly. ringtones,*mtv ringtones and games, text messeges and much more if you want to get a phone you should get this one!
3 THE BEST PHONE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i just bought the new "slider" phone not to long ago. it is the best phone i ever had, it has awsome ring tones, and the whole MTV thing i think is really cool. i also think it cool because the color screen is really big 4 such a small phone. now all my friends want to go out and but this phone.
THANK YOU VIRGIN MOBILE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4 Slider
This phone is awesome and sleek. IT would be cool if it had a camera but its still a cool phone and I cant tell you how many of my friends want to get rid of their old phones and get a slider.
5 Nice Phone
Pretty nice phone overall. The keys seem small at first, but you get used to it. The ringtones could be a bit louder but its no real trouble. A nice phone for a first time user.
6 Nice but one problem.
Well this beats the snot out of the phone Verizon gave me. I've had it a year and the sound quality is still teh w1n! One problem though, the vibration is really weakass. I mean, I had it in my jacket pocket and couldn't even feel it. I missed a bunch of calls! So I put it in my pants pocket and I could just barely feel it when it rang. Not even putting it in my pants helped that much. I'm frustrated.
7 Great phone
I bought this phone and had it programmed in no time at all. This phone has so many great features, especially the voice activated dialing..something some other wireless prepaid phones do not have. It is small, light and so easy to open with just one hand. I am a bit older than the MTV generation but who cares...I love this phone. The voice quality is excellent regardless where I am calling from and I like the fact that there are thousands of ringtones I can choose from.
It is the coolest wireless phone I have ever had.
8 Hasty decisions
First, the service:
Around August of 04 I finally convinced my mom to let me get a phone. I had seen this phone 3-4 months before in a mall in Texas, I loved it. It just looked cool, a chick magnet if you will. I also liked the Virgin Mobile setup with the top-up cards because there were no contracts. This was supposed to be an emergency only phone which is the only scenario in which I would recommend this phone. IF YOU TALK ALOT DO NOT GET VIRGIN MOBILE!! I bought it without a second thought about it. Never again...
It was fine at first. Other than the occasional incoming/outgoing call it was never used. About a month later my first top-up card was spent. I got another one and decided that I didn't like having an "emergency only phone." My second card went in about a week and a half. The money goes way too fast compared to other companies. The only difference is you can quit without paying a fee, which I plan on doing soon.
Now to review the actual phone. I was rather upset when I found the same phone for some $100 cheaper without MTV. A pretty cool thing to have but something I rarely use. The Virgin Extras are pretty much the MTV function but its free to access. The sliding feature is cool but the exterior screen is vulnerable to scratches and cracks. I've tried but there's always more damage to the screen every time I pull it out of my pocket. The keys are small which isn't a huge hassle unless you're playing one of the games. The speaker is rather nice and the polyphonic ringtones are loud and clear. The one touch vibrate or silent is good if you have to convert it in class or somewhere where it's best not seen. The text messaging is easy after getting used to it. There's a couple different text options so you can choose whichever suits you best. I'd say there's about a 30 minute learning curve.
Thats about it. If MTV sounds like something useful to you and you have a big wallet then I recommend this phone for you but if MTV isn't really something you're after than find the much cheaper version.
9 Virgin Mobile Insiders
I love this phone, it is very small and light, I love the sliding effect, it protects the buttons as well. Most of all, I just like being part of Virgin Mobile. Honestly, it's the most fun phone company ever! I get free stuff all the time, and get to earn points for free top up cards, and the rates are very competitive. There are no overage charges, no long distance fees, no contracts! It's fabulous, I cannot say enough about it. Please join, you won't regret it! I promise!!
10 One of Virgin Mobile's Best
Our friend has the MTV edition of this phone and it always gets attention. The bright color screen on this slider is very eye catching. The ringtones are awesome and she doesn't pay a monthly bill which she loves. One of the top of the line phone's available for Virgin Mobile's Pay As You Go plan.

12 I like it!
I just got the phone for Christmas & I think Santa was pretty good to me. It's a really cute phone & since im gonna use it for emergancys i think its gonna work out great. I'm a college student & i don't have much money to spend on a cell so i think this will be perfect.
My only complain: the cost of xtra Ringtones! That's the only real problem I have.
13 JUNK, JUNK, JUNK
Not only is this phone a piece of junk but VirginMobile is the WORST company I have ever tried to do business with. I just spent 30 minutes on the phone getting through the voice menus to have a recorded voice tell me that they were busy and it then hung up on me. DO NOT BUY A PHONE FROM THEM. YOU WILL BE SORRY IF ANYTHING EVER HAPPENS TO IT. I am now stuck with a high-priced phone that doesn't work and no way to find out where to send it for warranty work because they will not answer their phone and their web site does not list warranty centers, only that same phone number that I called.
14 cool
I bought this phone recently and it has been a hype amongst my friends. They love the bright screen and people I do not even know have approached me, asking me about where I bought my phone. Everyone loves it! I also love the pay as you go features because it just makes life easier for me. I absolutely recommend this phone to anyone!

16 Simply Awesome
My family just bought this phone and we think it is very efficient especially with the pay as you go features. I'm constantly on the go so the pay as you go helps out a lot. I also like the color screen. It's a cool phone and I suggest you go buy it now!
17 Cutest phone ever!
I love my Slider phone. When I first saw the ads for it I just knew I had to have it! It was soo cute with it's sliding action. I love just pulling it out when I'm outside to get people's comments on my phone. I also like it cuz the minutes are cheaper than other prepaid services and has alot of cool features and a nice vibrant screen.
18 Love the phone but service is a step down from Cinguglar
I love this phone - it's really cool - even though I never use the Mtv feature which just gets in the way. Virgin is great and I love how they have the pay-as-you-go features set up on the internet; great customer service also. Unfortunately, the actual cellular service is spotty - they use Sprint's network which is much less reliable than Cingular's. But since I don't make that many calls it's (almost) perfect for me but "you get what you pay for".
19 OK Virgin Mobile Phone
The slider is alright, but it has a bad drawback. I have had the phone for almost a year now and it has been pretty loyal to me since. The first and most frequent problem I have with this phone is the low volume for the ring, I can never hear it! Since I am usually around fairly noisy areas, I can never hear my phone ring and end up missing tons of calls throughout the day. This feature really began to irritate me for the past year, even if you try to find a louder ringtone.. it makes no difference. Another problem is the price! Spending .25 cents a minute is a terrible compared to some other cell phone companies. Every month I end up spending atleast $60 or more. If you tend to talk on your cell phone alot or will be using to call friends and talk for awhile, do NOT buy this phone, you will burn a hole in your pocket. Other than these problems the slider is an ok phone, it has been working for me for awhile and it is easy to use. If will only use your cell phone for emergency situations or short calls and don't mind the low volume, than this phone is for you.
20 Nice Phone
The Slider is a sweet phone. I dont have one but ,I've seen them & they're nice. I have the Vox 8610..which i LOVE!! I like the color screen & i like that i don't have a "contractual obligation"! I suggest that if anyone wants a pre-paid phone..Go with Virgin Mobile!!!
21 A sharp looking phone
My friend has the MTV edition of this phone and loves it. You can't ask for a cooler slider. It is lacking some of the features of other Virgin Mobile phones but all in all it has all the basics plus MTV content and it will adjust volume when your background noise increases. She says it is easy to use and the pay as you go plan is just her style.
22 ******~Nice Celly Telly!!!~*******
The Kyocera Slider V5 MTV Edition Phone is a good phone. The only thing about this phone is that the buttons are a tad bit small. Other than that the phone has every thing you could ask for. Speaker phone, vice activated dialing.......... ext.. The phone has 4 games and a big screen. The phone is compact and has a unique sliding motion. It is the only phone I have ever seen that has a slider on it. The battery has about 4hrs. talking time on it and about 4 days stand by time.
I higly reccoomend this phone to every one and I hope it treats you well
23 My Friend's Superstar Phone
My friend has this MTV edition phone + I am all jealous. It is one of the only phones I know of to feature high quality sound with polyphonic ringtones! Features exclusive MTV content and the coolest hing I noticed was it automatically adjusts call volume based on surrounding noise. Super cool!
24 HAPPY VIRGIN!
I have had my slider for about 8months and I love it!! I use most all features and the signal is unbeatable! I work in a bar at night where things get very loud-It's great to have the LCD face light up when it rings so I can see it-the ring volume is low, and I have missed some calls when using the vib-ring. The keys r a bit small, but the phone is great-you can take it anywhere and everyone loves the slick slide motion!!
25 "The Slider"
I have had many, and I do mean many phones and the slider is the best one yet. The reception can't be beat! I can talk in places where most people loose signals. I have to agree with the ringing being a bit low but overall, this phone is great and I wouldn't trade it for nothing! It's very easy to use and compact. I highly recommend it.
26 A great cell phone!
I think that the slide phone is a fantasticphone because it is very compact and easy to use. You can bring it anywhere and has unbeatable reception to other brands
27 Can't go main stream
I tend to be a rather unusual guy...can't jsut go with the norm. So, as my friends were getting those boring phones that are just candy bars or flips, I just had to go with the SLIDER. Yes, that is the main reason I bought the phone...that and the Virgin PAY-GO plan (but I'm not here to review that). I love the James Bond ring tones (though pricy, I am willing to pay) and was able to get a 007 wallpaper...ok, I have issues. As I used it, I found that the texting was great and the features were wonderful...tip calculator, traditional calulator, voice memo, calender, stop watch, alarm, timer...all great things to have at hand, and fit perfectly in the phone...given 4 stars mainly for the service I am using and that the ringer's could be a bit louder...though the basic "phone" issues are the same as my buddies, the compact size and slider feature is always an eye opener...a perfect fit for anyone who wants a phone that is just a little outside of the norm.
28 Great Phone.
This phone has it all. Sleek design, cool interface, great graphics, and not to mention the sweet sliding function. Truly an innovative design and is quite functional. Everything about this phone is great, especially the No Contract neccessary thanks to Virgin Mobile.
29 I already had a phone but I wanted this one so bad!!!
I had originally went to Virgin Mobile and purchased the VOX8610 and I loved it. It was the first real cell phone I had ever owned so ofcourse anything would do. About two months after I bought it I heard of the Slider phone and I couldn't wait to get my hands on one. <br />
Due to my birthday recently, I could afford to buy the slider. I have had it for three weeks now and I love it. I still can't say which phone (the VOX8610 or the SLider) I would raather use. I love them both. The only thing with the slider is the keys are a bit to small, and I have small fingers. <br />
It's kinda funny because I have butterfingers and my friend told me that I would break it in two weeks. I did, but I wasn't at fault!! The battery died on me. I went onto the VM website and saw that they are having recall for the SLider and Rave batteries purchsed within 120 days and activated. So go to www.virginmobile.com and check to see if your battery is on recall.<br />
<br />
Love ya all lots (especially the hott guys)<br />
~Brynn~
30 OK
THIS PHONE IS OK I MEAN I WAS REALLY EXCITED WHEN I GOT IT. EVERYONE THAT SAW IT THOUGHT IT WAS REALLY COOL! BUT AFTER 6 MONTHS I GOT TIRED. BASICALLY THE ONLY COOL THING ABOUT THIS PHONE IS THE SLIDE PART.. AFTER A WHILE YOU WILL DEFINITLY WANT A FLIP PHONE SO DO NOT GET THIS PHONE UNLESS YOU DONT LIKE ALOT OF FEATURES OR YOU JUST USE A PHONE FOR THE USE OF CALLING AND TEXTING...
31 Awesome phone!
This phone is incredible. It is on the cutting edge of technology, and is a great value. I have had mine for over a year now, and it has never let me down. I love my phone, and Virgin Mobile is a great service for people who dont talk on the phone constantly. What an awesome phone!
32 A Great Little Phone
This is a great phone for anyone who loves to be at the cutting edge of technology. It is functionally big, but small enough to stow anywhere. It comes with alot of options to personalize it, and has really awesome polyphonic ringtones. This is an awesome phone and plan option for anyone who dosent use a ton of minutes.
33 Great choice!
This is a great phone! so far i have no problems with it.. the games are cool.. and i love text messaging. If you are deciding which cell you want.. go with the kyocera V5 MTV edition. I love it!!!!!
34 Cute Phone, decent service
I got tired of paying $30/month and only using about 20 minutes of airtime so I bought this phone and signed up with Virgin Mobile. The phone works fine -- no problems except for spotty reception (which I had with Sprint anyway). The whole transction and programming the phone was smooth. The only problem I had was that Virgin assigned me a number that is long distance from my house. When I called, they said they cannot do anything about it -- a computer assigns the number (again, I had the same problem with Sprint). Other than that things were fine. The service was okay if you can overlook the whole MTV hepcats routine they give you each time.
35 One of the worst phone on the market
I bought my daughter a Kyocera Slider MTV edition phone for Christmas 2003. In April, it completely stopped working. I called Kyocera, the phone was in the warranty period, they would not repair or replace it. Do not waste your money on this phone. Now, it's $150 toy for my 6 year old niece.
36 The Coolest phone ever
If you need a cell phone. You want to start with this one. This is the best prepaid phone out there and it is with the best prepaid cell phone company out there. Virgin Mobile! checkout www.virginmobileusa.com for details and there very cheap prepaid plans. This phone has all the cool stuff including a color screen and ringtones. My phone rings to the theme song of the flinstones...haha You can even arrange wakeup calls get the latest entertaiment news from MTV and a whole lot more...what are you waiting for. You will be in style with this phone.
37 kyocera slider v5 is cool
a friend of mine has one of theses and lets me borrow it all the time it has a lot of features more than i can put here(color easy buttons etc) but its also really compact without being hard to use slide it out and its normal size then slide it back and it fits in your pocket easy plus with virgin mobile you can get all the mtv news etc and instant messaging etc you need plus prepay is the easiest way to go
38 Not a good idea
When I first got this phone I thought it was great, and so did other people, but that didn't last very long. Once you get past the novelty of a sliding phone, not much is there to back it up. I actually dropped the phone the first week I had it, and got a huge crack in the screen and the battery popped out and wouldn't fit in the phone anymore without tape. Yes, very bad. I've dropped phones in the past resulting in no major damage, so this was a bit disappointing. The phone is definitely geared towards younger cell users, with childish screen savers and wallpaper, and MTV extras that you still have to pay for (usually .10 for each service like news, games, etc.). NOT a good phone for large hands or fingers, as holding and dialing at the same time becomes a pain. I have small fingers but it was still a problem.
Service is another story. If you plan on talking more than 100 minutes a month, definitely do not get this plan. Most of my conversations last less than 10 minutes, so I ended up paying .25 a minute (it's .10 after the first 10 minutes). $2 for an 8 minute conversation is HORRIBLE! I've breezed through, on average, $60 a month. I'm going back to a monthly billed plan simply because I'd rather have 400 or more minutes a month for $50 (with tax) and be careful not to go over rather than paying as much as I am now. Plus Amazon has so many deals on phones where you actually GET MONEY BACK, that I couldn't imagine spending $130 or more on a phone again.
Pros? Well it gets decent service and the ringtones are OK as well. Speakerphone is a great thing too! That's all I can think of....
Games are not good at all, although the 21 card game is good to play if you are trying to fall asleep. Stinks that you have to pay to access your voicemail as well (the usual .25/minute cost). This phone just isn't worth the money!
39 VM Phones Rock
My virgin mobile phone is the best. Awesome style, color screen, everything you need expecially for a teen ager. Text messaging keeps me in tune with all my buddies,MTV Connects me to the music like gossip, news, and i get the best ringtones first(makes my friends so jelous). So if you looking for a cell phone for your teen this is the one they can even pay their own bill because just$20 every 90 days its the best better than(tmobile, at&t, or tacaphone)buy this phone!!!!!
40 Virgin mobile user for LIFE!
I love this phone and all of the features. I have had it for awhile now and like the way it sends me updates on everything mtv. You have to run out and by this phone, it has great games, a chic style and I never go anywhere with out it!
41 Lilshizzy loving this phone...!
The 'Slider' is definitely an awesome phone. As soon as I saw this phone on the virgin mobile website I feel in love. It's has just about everything I could have hoped for. It's stylish, uniquely designed, has great reception, almost all the features I wanted (including color screen, downloadable ring tones, and text messaging), but best of all it's pre-paid.<br />
<br />
Overall this phone is awesome, one of the best I've seen and the best I've ever purchased. If you're looking for a unique 'pre-paid' phone, this is the one to get!
42 Get this phone!
Slider style is definitely the phone for me. As soon as I saw this phone on virginmobile.com I feel in love. It's has just about everything I could have hoped for. It's stylish, uniquely designed, has great reception, almost all the features I wanted (including color screen, downloadable ring tones, and text messaging), but best of all it's pre-paid.
If I had to give it a score from 1-10 I'd give it a 9. Why not a 10 you ask, well because of a few features that would have been nice, but I can live without. They include a camera, voice ring tones, and web access.
Overall this phone is awesome, the best one I've bought so far and one of the best I've seen available. If you're looking for a unique `pre-paid' phone, this is the one to get!
43 my next phone
I've been a Virgin Mobile customer for about a year and I'm very happy. I have a different phone--a Vox 8500, which is very small and lightweight, has a long battery life, and has great reception (even in buildings). On more than one occasion I've dropped it, gotten it wet (it's even fallen into snow/rain puddles) and it always works fine. My friend has this phone (the slider) and LOVES it--esp. the "slider" feature, which she loves even more than the average flip phone. I am upgrading to this phone soon!
Their website (virginmobileusa) is very interactive, very easy to use, and I've only once needed to call customer service about my phone (for something that wasn't even a problem). It's great not to have a contract, and although it's not exactly my primary phone, I love it.
44 the slider rocks
this phone is awesome....a great feature is the fact that the face slides down to cover the buttons,so u dont have to put the key lock on,and u can't accidentally dial anyone or anything while its down....this works well when its floating around in ur purse or backpack....i love that u can download ringtones. I use my phone for text messaging daily and the placement of the buttons works for pretty fast texting....the only complaint i have it that im left handed and the "back" button being all the way over on the left of the numeric keypad, its kinda awkward to reach when ur texting fast..
The battery lasts for days, the inbox holds a lot of messages, as always there is a tip calculator in the tools menu(comes in handy), messages send and receive quicker than anybody else's phone that i know of, and i always have a signal even when no one else does....
i drove across country last summer and the time changes automatically and i had a signal all the way....
all in all a great phone.....
45 WoW
Im 11 and in November im getting this phone!!!!!!!Ive seen the commercials ,readthe reviews, tryed it out,and im ready to buy!!!! Tis phone is better than the phone I have now its color screen, small and slider I LOVE THIS PHONE!!!!!!!!!!!11
46 great phone the best yet.
this is the greatest cell phone i have seen yet. i love it. it was bought as a gift for me and i can't thank the person enought
for getting it for me. i fell in love with it. thanx virgin moble
for this kind of cell phone. i am very-happy with it. the features, are great on it.
47 Thats What I Thought
This phone was great for me. Notice that I said "was." The reason for that is it recently broke. I called VM and they said that they could not do anything about that becasue the phone it self was not part of VM. It was a great phone. It broke for no reason. I never droped it left it in the son or anything of that sort. If your looking for a cell phone that has games this is not the one. Yeah it has its feauters, but there not so great. I recomend that you get the latest version of VM which is the Vox 6150.
48 No WAP browser
The Slider is a very good cell phone. I have used one since it was offered on the Virgin Mobel system. However, it does NOT use the WAP browser system as advertised. You cannot use the web on this phone. You are limited to what ever MTV offers on a menu driven list. Adding free ringtones and graphics can be done with the right program (not Kroscera's) and a data cord found online so the phone can be personalised. Battery life is very short. The sounds are loud and clear. I have used many cell phones over the years, Motorola, Nokia, etc....and the slider ranks up there as one of the best.
49 Great phone for people who don't use phones
Me and my wife have used this phone service over the last year and it's been great. We estimate it only costs us about $6 a month because we hardly use up the minutes. We only buy minutes at the end of our 3 months. If you talk on the phone a lot though I would recommend a contract.
One other good thing about them is they only charge $0.10 a minute after the first five minutes. This does not depend on the number of minutes you buy up front.
This phone was great when we went from Dallas to Vegas. It costs us little to use even though we left our primary area code. We made all kinds of long distance calls and it cost little more than $15.
If I could change anything about this service I would ask they grow up a little bit. MTV? Who cares? Give me news and weather virgin mobile! Adults use this phone too! I would pay the $.10 for the extra service of checking weather and news. We hardly use our minutes.
My other question is. Do teens like looking at creepy pictures of other teens on the virgin mobile web site? Do we need to waste bandwidth on that when checking my bill?
Another thing I would change is that yahoo mobile consider virgin a service, this way I could get text message alerts sent to it from yahoo.
50 this phone's so cool!!!
I really like my slider phone. It is so cute and easy to use. I have to pay for the top-up cards, but the price was pretty hefty, it was something like $150 at Best Buy. However it does have a lot of cool features like MTV ringtones and voice dial (which I havent' used yet). Also I like being able to check my balance to see how much money I have left before I need to Top-up. You should check it often because I went through wayyyy too much money the first time I topped-up! No long chats, save those for the home phone. Its something like 25 cents a minute the first 10 minutes you talk. Still the phone was really easy to set up to. And I'm addicted to Brick Attack (the game)!! I think my OK button is kinda loose though...after like...4 days.
51 Nice Little Phone
I really do like the Kyocera Slider. It is a really nice little phone. I love the screen on it, but it doesn't have all that much function, it does't have support for things like animated ringtones :( I was kind of dissappointed to get it, and a few weeks later the Vox 8610 came out for only $99.00. And the Vox has all the cool new features like superphonic ringtones instead of the polyphonic ones. Other than that I really love my slider. It seems pretty resistent to damage. I've dropped it 3 times, and not a single scratch on it. The battery popped off but not a single blemish caused by any of the falls. I'm also really amused by the cool sounds you can have it make while opening and closing. It also has a nice set of Tools including a Calculator, Voice recorder, Datebook etc. And it also has a few really good games (Tetris, Breakout, and Blackjack. I love my slider! even though it was a bit expensive compared to all the other virgin mobile phones.
52 Virginmobile is no virgin when it comes to ripping you off
I purchased two phones for Xmas gifts--the phone itself works great but the provider is a rip off. Their deal is that you pay 20 bucks for air time(25cents per minute). This money stays on the phone for 3 months--if you don't use it, you lose it-unless you 'top' up before the 3 months is over. If you use a cell phone at all you'll spend a fortune keeping the phone active which is what happened with my nephew--he burns 60 bucks a month easily on the plan. My mom hardly ever uses it and had 60 minutes of time available when she had to do her last 'top' up. She used a credit card--topped her phone up and the next day had to do it again because the web service failed supposedly. So, she does this again and now her phone shows the new 20 bucks.
Here's the kicker. When she gets her credit card statement Virgin mobile charged her for the one that failed(and for which she didn't get the time) as well as the other charge.
Because she topped up her phone and the boy's at the same time (her second attempt), when she disputed the first charge from the previous day, virgin mobile suspended service to BOTH phones.
This was done automatically by computer. After 9 days of trying to get this remedied, I gave up--these people lend whole new meaning to the word, 'dishonest'!!!!
Buyer beware.
53 Great Phone!
I have the Alltel TriMode SE 44 version of the Slider. I've had it for a week.
It is a great phone. I use it as my primary business phone and it is ideal for my needs.
Best features are the voice activated modes. You can set the phone up to recognize voice commands where you can either say the name of the person you are dialing, or have it dial by saying the numbers of the phone you are dialing. It also has voice answering, so with a good headset, you really won't have to use the key pad that much. There is even an "expert" mode where you can avoid the voice prompts used on the voice dialing system. It keeps a great signal even in rural areas (Part of this is because of Alltel's great coverage)
The phone is a great size, small enough to slip into your pocket, or in the belt holster. (Do NOT use the belt clip, the phone does not fit in it very well, use a slide in holster). The keys are small and flush, but if you set up voice dialing you won't have to punch in many numbers.
You can download great ringtones to customize it as you please.
It's not loaded with every feature known to man, but it has the ones that you need to make this an intergal part of your everyday life. I highly recommend it.
54 the best thing ever invented
this is the best phone a person can have i mean who wouldn't get this phone. its so many things to do with the phone
Doodler mode- where you can draw real pictures on your phone
speakerphone- this is a good feature to the phone the audio is great.
good signal-this phone has the best coverage every where i go.
mtv access- i'm 15, so i need things like music and mtv news and all the hot gossip.
cute slide up-slide down action
ITS JUST THE PERFECT PHONE
55 The Amazing SLIDER phone
Sure this phone looks badass and cool. BUT, if you're someone who actually uses their cell phone then Virgin Mobile is not for you. I'll admit that the phone is awesome and gets lots of attention. But when I'm spending about $80 a month on it? not so neat anymore. So, if you rarely use your cell phone then a prepaid Slider is good way to go. Otherwise, find a monthly plan and save some money.
56 this is the best phone ever thought of
OH MY GOSH!!! this is the best phone ever it has so many things to offer. Please ,please get this phone if you don't you'll be very sorry you didn't. i just got this phone yesterday and it's like love at first site. if this phone was a guy i'd marry it or him or whatever it would be in a second! you gotta get this phone!!!!!!

59 The Good the Bad of the Virgin Slider
If you are looking for a cool looking phone and want to be able to get cool ringtones and vote on video clash and other related mtv specials then you should buy this phone. I found with this phone that I had to pay a ridiculous amount for my minutes which is 25 cents a minute and then 10 cents after the first ten minutes. This happens everyday so you end up spending as much as you would with an expensive plan but you don't get as many minutes as if you had a different plan. I also can never find a signal so I find myself walking around looking like an idiot trying to call someone. I do not recomend this phone if your a teenager or an adult who uses their phone a lot because it will burn a hole in you pocket.
60 it's awsome!
this is the best phone i have ener had. it has got every thing you would ever want in a cell phone. my favorite feature is the doodler mode which you can draw your own pictures in it. i highly recomend this phone for anyone who wants one
61 Before you buy a Virgin Mobile please be a
I have 2 VM phones and my neighbor has 1. Shortly after the 1 year warranty expired they began to have problems. These were used for occasional and emergency purposes. When we contacted Virgin Mobile they said there was NOTHING they could do except sell us NEW phones at full price. So I spent over $200 in phones only to find out they are throw aways after 13 to 14 months. Virgin Mobile will make alot of money off the 1.75 million consumers that will have to replace their phones. So if your phone breaks don't expect any help from VM and if you have any prepaid minutes they become part of Virgin Mobile's profits. In other words you just donated your $$$$ to them.
Let the buyer beware when you do business with Virgin Mobile. Expect to throw away the phone in just over a year. Shame on VM as they are targeting the young of this country who won't have any way to protect themselves fom this type of scam.
62 Best Phone & Plan Ever
This is a really awesome phone. There are not many cons but I'll make a list anyways:
Pros:
*NO MONTHLY PLAN
*color screen
*sliding is really cool
*automatic keylock when closed
*cheap text messaging
*easy balance check
*comes with 4 good games
*you can draw your own backgrounds and screensavers
*downloadable ringtones
*has room for a lot of contacts
Cons:
*screen is a little delicate
*costs a lot for voicemail
*is really addictive to use!
63 This Phones Is The Bomb!!
This the number one phone I love to have. Despite that it a pay as you go phone it really great to have if you go to school or work. Despite it a prepaid phone it does cost that much. To be honest I really like Virgin then Verizon cause you don't have to worry about a bill every month and no contract. So I rate this phone 5 stars *****.
64 Awesome Phone
I got this phone as a birthday present and I was mad that i couldnt have a plan like everybody else. It's even better than a plan. Now instead of paying like 150-200 bucks a month, 20 bucks will last 2-3 weeks. I was a little dissapointed because I thought there was more web space than just mtv stuff but I love the phone. I told all my friends to get it and everyone likes how it slides. People told me that I'll break the phone but it's still in perfect condition.
65 OK Phone- With some major drawbacks
I was initialy happy when I purchased this phone last November. But my opinion has changed. I'm sure you have read enough glowing reviews so I'd like to list some negative points.
Lets start with the biggest drawback; The ringtone volume is too low! I drive a truck for a living and on its highest setting I still can't hear it while I'm driving, some ring-tones are barely audible even when I'm not in a noisy atmosphere.
So this brings me to the vibration feature, If the phone is not directly up aganst your skin you can't feel it. Low volume and a weak vibration = missed calls. This to me, is the reason I am looking for a new phone. Also, the vibration feature stopped working all together, so that meant sending it back to Virgin for a new phone and unfortunatly all my contacts and downloaded ringtones were gone with no refund.
Some other annoyances: The tip calculator, I generally tip between 15 & 20%, so lets say I tip on the average 17% the phone only gives you the options of 10,15,18,and 20%? Any other phone I've seen with this feature gives you the option of entering your own percentage. You can enter in your own tip $$ amount but that just totals your bill, And if you can't figure out a 10% or 20% tip in your head you should bring an accountant to dinner with you.
I didn't buy this phone for the MTV features, But if you want to use them you have to pay for air time, As with any new toy I played with them in the begining but boy did my account balance go down quick! Not a feature I would recomend on a pre-paid plan.
Virgin says it is .25 cents a minute but according to the phone's timer it costs me .25 cents at 55 seconds.
As far as the pre paid plan goes its not bad. I used AT&T Free2Go before I bought this phone and was going to cancel my AT&T plan but kept it for my wife to use for emergencys. The Virgin plan was about 1/2 the price at the time. But recently AT&T's Prices have come down dramaticly (You can buy a $100 fill up, good for a year at .15 cents a Min.) so I may switch back to AT&T Free2Go as my primary phone service.
I know this is all negative but I'm sure you've also read all the good points about this phone. Happy Shopping!
66 Astoundingly poor service from Virgin Mobile
Virgin's customer service is so astoundingly bad that I believe they HAVE to market themselves to kids so eager to get a phone - ANY phone, that they will put up with Virgin's constantly malfunctioning computer system.
Virgin doesn't have any 708 area code phone numbers available, so get ready to dial 10 digits for every local call.
Get ready to hear, "our system is down right now, you'll have to call back in four hours", or the routine..."I'm not finding any record of your account on my computer"...
I love the pay-as-you-go payment plan, and I really wanted to like them, but...
67 Is better than the other 8 phones I've had
This is simply the best phone I've purchased. I've had phones from my CIngular plan, and some from my T-Mobile plan, and though they were good, there was always one better out there. This is it. I dropped my regular service because of the rising cost, (and found out this is almost the same per year, but I can control the monthly cost - $20 one month, $60 the next) ... the phone has speaker phone (and usually place on my armrest in my jeep, and people say they can't hear a difference from when I have it near my ear, very clear). Voice enabled dialing for those in your address book. You can also speak a number and have it dial when you say dial, gives you an instant balance on your account. Keeps track of total minutes used per day/month/since you've owned the phone. Battery life is good. The ONLY bad thing I can say, is that the glass front could be covered or something. Is outstanding. Would and have recommened it to everyone. When I use it in public, people do stare and ask what type of phone I'm using.
68 Finally, a pre-paid service & phone worth switching for!
Let's face it, pre-paid services are designed to take advantage of people with bad credit. They're forced to accept high per-minute charges on shabby phones with even worse reception.
But not all of us have bad credit. I was formerly an AT&T subscriber and before that I'd been with Verizon for years. I like having a mobile phone with me at all times, and I want great reception, caller ID, a nifty phone, great customer servive, etc., but I simply don't put enough minutes into my phone to justify committing to $40.00 per month for a year (or two).
I've been aware for a while now that pre-paid service would be better suited for me. But because they were all so ghetto-quality, I felt it worth the $40.00/month rather than give up my dignity and be seen with a phone from TracPhone or Liberty Wireless.
Thank God for Virgin Mobile! Not only are they as classy and quality as the big subscrition services, I feel they're better.
Virgin Wireless costs only $20.00 every 3 months at a minimum. Of course at $0.25/min for the first 10 mins. and $0.10 for every min. thereafter, a subscription service would make more sense for someone making lots and lots of calls. But the amount of calls I make ends up costing me roughly $10.00/month. That's a lot of savings!
Virgin's customer servive, online and over the phone, is fantastic. Although I haven't needed much assistance, the few times I had to contact them, I didn't wait on hold longer than 30 seconds. The operators were smart and friendly. And what's most important of all, the reception is as good as AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, Cingular, etc. (my co-workers all have mobiles from all the major carriers; we compare our phones constanty).
Now about the Kyocera Slider V5. This is a top-knotch phone in every way. I'm the only one I know with one like it. The slider idea is nifty. The speakerphone is very good. I agree that the buttons are a little tricky, but they are hardly worth mentioning. I'm also not interested in the MTV motif, but I can assure you, there are only a few ringer/wallpapers/ringsavers from them. The rest are normal, and very nice, I might add. With the exception of a neraly invisible insignia on the battery, my phone is completly MTV-free.
Overall, the Kyocera Slider V5 on Virgin Mobile Wireless is a fantastic deal. I'm 100% satisfied. I recommend this to everyone!
69 Little Pricie Great Phone
Its a great Phone, All my friends love it and it has MTV. I am 13 and it is the perfict phone for me, IT IS THE BOMB
70 BEST FONE EVA!
This was my 1st cell phone i have ever purchased, and i think it's great! It has games, text messaging, ringtones, wallpapers, screen savers, and a bunch more. I like the Virgin Mobile plan, too. You only have to pay $20 every 90 days and thats on $80 a year! If you talk on your phone a lot, this is not the best plan for you. If you do talk a lot, you're better off paying $30 or so a month. But, in my opinion, this phone is excellent and you should definately consider buying it.
71 Virgin Mobile Kyocera Slider
Right now, the Slider is the best Virgin Mobile phone on the market. For my birthday, earlier this month, I received the Slider as a replacement of my Audiovox 8500(which i don't recommend). The Slider has so much more than the Audiovox 8500; a color screen, screen savers, wallpapers, games, etc. Some major pluses of the Slider include its small size, an amazing color screen, and easy access to the menu and contacts. There isnt anything really bad about the Slider accept for the fact that the buttons are a tad bit to small but after a while you get used to them. I will definitely be keeping my Slider for a long time because it fits a teenagers needs perfectly.
72 Absolutely cool
The slider phone from Kyocra is absolutely cool. The color screen is wonderful, but the phone is so tiny when closed! It's just totally impressive. BTW this is also available for Verizon Wireless, but Verizon's network sucks: it has good coverage nationwide but voice quality stinks. The phone sounds better on Sprint's network, which Virgin Mobile utilizes.
73 Slide to Heaven
Oh my goodness! I can't believe my new slider phone! I love it, for a freshman at college this phone is amazing and cheap. I used to be under sprint but they're all about jacking up prices! I needed a new phone seeing as sprint was overcharging and never addressed my concerns fast enought for me so I switched to virgin. Yes theyre under sprint coverage but I dont directly contact them for anything! I usually use my phone for long distance for the most part and its nice not having to pay those kind of fees. With my new slider its quick and easy and I make out better price wise. The only thing I didnt like about the slider was how small the buttons are but I can manage I usually go for the small phones anyway. It was fast to set up it didnt take more than 5 minutes! downloads are fast, ringtones are hot you need this phone! With no contracts you control everything and you can get service almost anywhere Ive even used it in side the school building and with my old fone two steps to you left and your out of service range. But also you cant deny that this phone is the coolest design yet and if you really want to be under the "plan" type services you could always use you VM Slider under Verizon as well! Happy phoning!
74 The bomb
Hey this phone is the best ever!!!!!! i love it haha
75 great phone!
i got this phone as a christmas gift. it's very cool and versatile, and very small. the keypad is a bit small but it's a small sacrafice for such a cool phone. i haven't had any problems thus far with it.
76 Not the best
I recently purchased the slider and before I bought it I looked at these reviews. It looked like a good phone, so I bought it. But no one mentioned the internet only gets mtv and vigin extras content. I tried to get on sum sites but there is nothing I can go on. Also it doesnt get IM forwarding(mobile aim). This phone is good if u want to use it 4 calls and text, but it is not 4 u if u want to use it to download games, receive sports scores, news etc... Dont be confused with the verizon wireless slider, because that one gets internet. im not going to waste my time writing the good parts, so read other reviews if u want to know good things. Just remember NO IM FOWARDING OR INTERNET!!!
77 Incredible
i just bought my daughter a slider phone and she loves it. im so glad that i bought it for her. its hip and unique and very adjustable to what she needs!
78 Poor service, and support
This phone is horrible. Do not buy this phone. For me it broke in the first two weeks (LCD broke, no physical damage on the outside/outer part of the phone). I went to the place I orginally bought it from (best buy), they said I could NOT take it back due to physical abuse. Again, there were no signs of abuse, of the oudside, so how did it break on the inside?
So, I called virgin mobile, they said just take it back to the store from which we bought it, AND that they would exchange the phone. So we went to a different best buy, but the orginal place the purchase, they said the same.
We told them to call virgin, they did, and said it violated their return policy (which buy the way say returns of 30 days, nothing about crappy products). So the clerk hung up, and said she knew what to do, and for us to go get an exchangement phone.
They she started arguing with the manager, and ended up telling us we could NOT return the phone there. So we called virgin AGAIN.
They said they would check the phone for abuse (which was already comfirmed, but not inflicted my any human cause), then he puts his manager on the phone, tells us that if the store did not return it they wouldn't even check. End of story, don't but this phone. Get a phone with a family plan, this phone costs too much to break so easily. After all this, my phone still calls, but I can no longer check anything that would have come up on the screen. Very disappointing.
79 I'm not sure but I give it a thumbs up
Okay. It's like this. I have been researching Virgin mobile and the slider phone. You have probably gotten different types of fees for calls from different reviews, but lets ste the record straight that it is 25cents for the first 10 minutes of each day and 10 cents after that. The back button is a tad bit difficult i hear, but think about it if you have small fingers as myself no prob. Oh incidentally the antenna does raise up.I would like to trust virigin mobile in having this phone appropriated for teens like myself. MTV is a huge plus. If you do not want MTV, Vh1 but want the phone i would still recommend it. I have been a Tracfone user for 2 years and I must say that they have equally good rates but their lowest card is is $20 for puny minutes. There phones are pieces of crap (very old crap)with there only outstanding feature being text messaging. Thir only pro would be that the have about 12 days of standby battery life, but it's no big because you can just charge your phone right.I will try to buy this phone and hope that it's worth the wait and price.
80 Very Fragile
This is an ok phone but not all that good. I love the style. But it is a very fragile phone and if your not careful the screen will crack. This is not a phone for workers. But overall an ok phone.
81 Nice functional phone ... great service from VM
I really like this cell phone and the prepaid service. I have been using it for over 4 months. Like another reviewer said, I too use my home / work phone primarily and this phone incl. service fits nicely in between when you want to be reached or make a call without contract and so on. Plus the free incoming text messaging is a nice touch. The MTV stuff doesn't bother me at all.
The coverage in the metropolitan area of mine (Chicago/Milwaukee) through the frequencies of CDMA 800 / 1900 seems to be no problem at all. I don't chat a lot on the phone and the required $ 20.00 top-ups every 3 months go a long way for me when you consider $ 0.25 per minute for the first 10 minutes every day and $ 0.10 thereafter for any calls on that same day. Hence no call a day = no charge ... unlike contracts.
In addition there are no hidden service fees or any of that. You pay when you use your phone and that is it. The screen, the buttons and the menu might take some time to get used to since it is a tiny phone. I shopped around before I purchased this phone in late November 2003 and this was the best pre-paid phone and service (Virgin Mobile) I could find for my needs.
82 Great for teens
I bought my 13 year old son this for Christmas. It is a great looking phone with all the features he wanted without a contract. I bought the phone and he buys his minutes, so he's learning about budgeting and enjoying a cool cell phone at the same time. We get great reception in our area and when traveling on major highways it has been good as well.
83 Great phone with a few small setbacks
This is a great phone.
It's got some nice basic PDA functions (schecule keeping, calculators, etc.) for people who do not wish to spend extra money on an actual PDA.
The games are decent (Tetris is always good) but I haven't been able to find any downloadable games at this time.
I'm not sure how to access the wireless web aside from the *MTV and VirginXtras pages (though I've read that it CAN be done) but I'll keep trying.
The only REAL complaint I have with the phone is the antenna. When I was pushing the antenna down (three days after purchase) the cap popped off (the large piece that keeps the antenna from getting stuck inside of the phone) and the antenna got stuck inside of the phone. The cap did not BREAK off but became detatched which is strange because I figured that the whole antenna (cap and all) would be one piece.
Overall this phone is very cool and I will enjoy it once I can replace my broken one :)
84 Love this phone
Hello, I got this Phone about two weeks ago and I Love it I can't stop messing with it! There are awesome games and backgrounds and screensavers... the games like brick attack and tetris are my favorite! Also great ringtones and the ones you download play wonderful well most of them... I read other reviews before I got my phone and that also helped me decide to get my kyocera slider and I am so glad I did! so... if you are thinking about getting this phone I think u should!
85 phone
i love my phone but i have a question does anyones phone get hot when its being charged with the charger that comes with it? mine gets hot.
86 Never been this excited over a phone!
After over a two-year commitment with AT&T, I was drained and unhappy and I was wary about making another commitment with another service provider. So I decided to shop around for options and I was beginning to warm up to the idea of pre-paid service. But let's face it, most pre-paid phones look... well, pre-paid. They're hardly flattering at all.
Then I came across the Kyocera Slider on Virgin Mobile's site and after skimming through the features, I found it hard to believe it's pre-paid! I was instantly hooked and ordered for one right away. The phone's design is very stylish and cool, I've gotten a lot of looks with it and people have a hard time believing that it's pre-paid.
I have to say, I have no regrets! I've never been this excited over a phone, especially when it's a downgrade from my last phone. I had a Sony Ericsson T616 with a camera and all the bells and whistles but I have to say, I actually like the Slider better!
I admit, it took some getting use to. The screen doesn't compare to the crisp and clarity of a $300 phone but after a while, it grows on you. The keypad layout was a challenge at first and I found the tiny little "Back" button awkward and hard to use. Being left-handed didn't help much either.
This is a great phone though and I can't stop raving about it! There are actually features on this phone that I haven't seen on high-end phones. You can even set the phone to Airplane Mode, which disables your phone's signal during take-off without turning your phone off completely. It comes with Tetris, how awesome is that? There's a Tip Calculator aside from a regular calculator, scheduler, an advanced address book and lots of other stuff.
My only qualms is that the built-in wallpapers aren't exactly to my taste and I still haven't figured out where I can go to download new ones, if that's at all possible. But aside from that, the Slider's functionality competely won me over. Battery life is amazing for a color-screen phone, both talk-time and standby. And because Virgin Mobile utilizes the Sprint PCS all-digital network, I actually have much better signal with this phone than I ever did with any phone on AT&T.
I highly-recommend this phone to anyone, especially people who are looking for a cool and stylish phone yet cautious about plans and contracts. Virgin Mobile has a very friendly and comprehensive service: no fine prints on selling your soul, giving up your first born or any of that hoopla. The phone is all yours, and you only pay for the time you use.
87 AWESOME
I got this phone for christmas....i love it! it is easy to carry and easy to use. this phone is great for kids 11-18...and everyone thinks is cool.
88 IF U DONT
If you dont like ur phone i will be more then happy 2 take it off ur hands. Please contact me @ my e-mail justpimpen@blackplanet.com or nuke800@sbcglobal.net i really really need another phone thank u so very much.
89 coulnt wait to get it
ever since i clicked the "order" button, ive been waiting minute by minute for this phone to arrive...its got a real good style...its original, and ha s abunch of options..even though the plan is kind of whack, 25 cents a minute...i still enjoy it..
90 Great phone
I've used virgin mobile for a long time and I'm really impressed with the slider. The features are great. The wallpapers and screensavers are cool. You can even create your own wallpaper! There's room for 10 additional ringtones that you can get from the virgin website or through the wireless browser! The service is great. I've never had a problem with it. The only negative thing I have to say about this phone is regarding the keypad. It's a little hard to maneuver. Otherwise this is an excellent phone.
91 Not happy with phone or coverage
Seemed like a good idea to have a pay-as-you go plan. I bought the phone, and have probably spent less than $15.00 per month on calls. But the phone is, um, unreliable. Every so often, I can't access the second level of menus -- the OK button seems to do nothing. When I asked Virgin about it, they responded that the phone was still under warranty, and it could be replaced. Fortunately, I found that I could "reset" it by removing the battery when it gets into this mode. Not exactly smooth operation. I almost lent my phone to my boss in a pinch, then thought better of it.
Also, I'm disappointed in the coverage. I've heard it's through the Sprint network, and still, not as good as the coverage on Sprint network, which, in Minneapolis, is still not great.
I haven't decided yet what to do. I may have the phone replaced, or I may just limp along for a while, then go ahead and get a phone from somebody else. Ironically, I choose this phone over the flip phone that Virgin offered because of the many problems reported with that model.
When I looked at phones, I checked out Verizon because of my husband's phone; he's always had excellent coverage. At the time, close to Christmas, Verizon was requiring that their pay-as-you-go phones be purchased for full price - about $350.00. They have since moderated that, and I wish I would have waited.
92 Glad I made the switch!
I've been a TracFone user for the last 3 1/2 years. After trying to upgrade to a motorola v60i and ending up in costumer service purgatory and getting the runaround for about 5 weeks, I finally told TracFone to take a flying leap and went with Virgin Mobile instead. My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner! The phone was a snap to set up via the website and I've found it to be very user friendly and it has some great features (but then again I'm easily amused as my previous phone was a VERY ancient Nokia 918). I agree with previous reviews that the keys can be a little tough to use sometimes. I also hope that Virgin Mobile can add a roaming fee structure for those times you are out of the Spring PCS network. The fees are pretty straightforward and even though the balance isn't readily available like TracFone, you can request a balance and within 30 seconds, they will text message your balance or you can look it up the VM website and even look at a detailed call history. I'm also not a big fan of the whole *MTV thing, but to me it's not that big of a deal and the other features of the phone far outweigh the *MTV logo on the startup screen. If you you have good Spring PCS network access, want to go prepaid, and get a realy nice phone, this one is for you!
93 Nice phone and yes the antenna extends.
I got this phone for my wife to use with Virgin Mobile as she wasn't using anywhere near the minutes on her Sprint plan.
Anyway, the phone is pretty neat! It does have a extendable antenna. I don't know where the person who said that the antenna doesn't extend got that from.
It seems to have pretty good battery life although since what we have is pre-paid, it hasn't had too many phone calls yet. I did change the GPS to "911 only" hoping that would help battery life.
It also seems to have good reception. It's not as good as my Sanyo 4900(on Sprint) when I compared them side by side on the "debug" screen, but it's decibel readings were not too much higher than the Sanyo.
A negative about this phone is the tiny "back" button. It does takes some getting used to.
Another negative is that Virgin Mobile limits you to specific websites.(although if you can find an older model VM slider you might have better luck with this aspect).
94 Little phone with nice features
Pros:
+ Small
+ Customizable: wallpaper, ringtones, speeddialing, add custom images to contacts
+ Voice dialing is great
+ Security to call only saved contacts (like when my previous phone was stolen)
+ GPS to locate u in case of emergency
+ Nice additional tools: calculator, voice remainder, tip calc...
+ Speakerphone
+ Easy to setup on the internet
Cons:
+ Buttons too small. the internal buttons are hard to press
+ Display when not in use is pretty dark and difficult to see at daylight
+ Battery life is not very good, but enough for a prepaid phone
+ You pay to use your voicemail
+ You are suppose to buy $20 top-up every monyh, but the minimum auto top-up amount is $30.
95 I hate cell phones and the people who use them
I was never going to be one of those people who have a phone plastered to the ear like a tumor. The people who are fearful of other people so they keep a friendly voice plugged into their ears at all times. The only problem was all of my friends became THOSE people. I'd sit at dinner with a friend and a phone. On those odd occasions that a phone would have been handy, my friends would say, "That's right, you don't have a phone, why don't you have a phone?" Because nobody needs to reach me right this instant, that's why. I'm not a doctor or a bail bondswoman. But alas, a couple weeks ago I needed a phone for directions, and the first two gas stations where I stopped didn't have payphones. Worse, the Walgreen's that did charged fifty cents for one call!! It was time to become one of THEM. I loved this phone at first sight, but forced myself to go home and read amazon reviews about it. Many of the other reviewers are like me: cheap and disinclined to commit to a monthly plan that won't be fully utilized. My kind of people. I bought the phone without another thought and LOVE it. I'm not one of THOSE people quite yet - I don't have the phone plastered to my ear while paying for groceries or careening down a snowy highway at 70 mph, but I do love the look of this little thing and look forward to being able to use it when I need it w/o worrying about a contract or minutes that will expire if I don't use them. This is a great deal for light phone users but such a slick little bugger people will most likely mistake you for one of THEM if they catch you with it.
96 Great value in a pre-paid plan.
I've had this kyocera slider for a few months now and I couldn't be happier. The service is a little spotty, but for 95% of the time it's spot on. The phone has so many great features, from the wallpapers, to the games etc. I would recommend asking around to see if your area is covered, but the maps they provide are pretty good. Overall its a great value for a great phone.
97 Will this work in my area?
I live south of Buffalo, NY. I'm wondering if anyone is out there who knows if this'll work in my area? I checked the coverage map, it looks OK, but my friend just bought a virgin mobile (she lives a half hour away) and she gets REALLY REALLY bad coverage, the map even said she would have coverage.
98 this phone deserves more then 5 stars
this is probably the best phone i have ever seen. Also it gives you braging rights when you get clear service and your friends get crap. for example I have service where my parents get left with none. Also virgin mobile will give you an extra $5 dollars in air time when you sign up on-line with
the code hipster
99 Great phone, great options
I just bought this phone a few days ago, but it by far surpasses any cell phone I've had previously. It has a speakerphone option, and voice recognition, so it makes using your cell phone while driving very easy, without having to look at the phone to dial or having to hold the phone against your ear and strain to hear the other person. The options the phone has are absolutely great, and it even comes with tetris as one of the games! I absolutely love my phone, and I couldn't picture a better phone by any means.
100 I Love This Phone!!!
I purchased the Slider this week, activated it in all of 10 minutes via computer and "topped up" today. Very easy to use and good reception. The Virgin Mobile website is extremely user-friendly and fun to use.
I had a contract phone and hated it; the service wasn't that great and I barely used the phone...40 bucks a month down the drain. This phone is perfectly suited to my needs.
I plan on buying a couple more for my nieces and nephew, along with a few Top Up cards. I would feel much more secure knowing they can stay in touch all the time with a reliable phone. They can also have fun downloading ringtones and getting MTV news!
