1 broke - after two years of constant use
Pro: Has that Porsche name on it.
Con: Big deal - still looks rather unimpressive.

Suggested use: backup??
Actual use: how could anyone use this hard drive for back up when it's so unreliable! And slow, even under the best of times!

Drive died after 2 years of infrequent use (only when I'm editing my home movies) or backing up my documents. While a recovery was possible, that kind of defeats the purpose of 'backup,' doesn't it?

Second: slow. Often, it took about 10-15 minutes to move a 1 GB file (about twice what it took on another portable HD I've used).

Conclusion: Avoid.
2 Great for a back-up hard drive!
I don't understand people who leave this on all the time and then get surprised when it stops working. It heats up quickly. It's not meant to be a computer. External hard drives are for backing up files. I have a regular desktop computer. Then, every week, I turn on my Lacie hard drive, back up my documents, then turn it off. It works perfectly.
3 I feel cheated
I bought this (LaCie 160GB USB2.0 Desktop Hard Drive ( 300700U ) P3 design by FA Porsche) drive by searching on drives for a Mac. First I found that it as formatted will not accept many Mac-acceptable file names. Then I learned that reformatting can only be done from Classic. Not worth my time, or yours.
4 so far so good
bought my lacie drive 1 month ago as a slave drive for my apple ibook. so far, it works pretty good. the speed is a bit slow though. its only good as a backup. it took me 5 minutes to get it running after receiving it.
5 A study in simplicity
My 2 yr. old Dell Desktop has been acting up for a while and was getting worse. It was crashing quite often and all my peripherals: printer, scanners and cd burner were being affected. I spent many a weekends trying to fix the problems to no avail. So for 2005 I resolved for clean sweep of my computer. This involved formatting C and re-install windows, Ahhh what a cleansing experience it was!

I needed to backup all my files first. Since my CD writer was malfunctioning, I had to find another way to backup all my files, about 20GB worth. I've always had this fear of opening my
computer case so I decided to buy an external device to house my files. My options were: a 20GB Apple Ipod (for temporary storage, then use it for music), an external dvd burner, an external hard drive. I decided that the simplest and most economical way was to buy an external USB hardrive. I chose the LaCie 160GB USB2.0 Desktop Hard Drive. It was the cheapest drive per GB here at Amazon.

The LaCie Hard Drive turned out to be just fantastic. It was study in simplicity. What you get is a plain grey box about the size of a VHS casette. Now I don't know what this "Porsche Design" is all about, how hard is it to create a grey box? There are 2 holes in the back, 1 for USB, one for power and a on/off switch. I plugged in the power and usb cord, flipped the switch and VOILA! Windows assigned the next drive letter and I clicked and dragged everything to the LaCie drive. And that was all there was to it. I didn't even install the software that came with the it.

I've no problems so far, I highly recommend this product giving it the highest rating.

ps. will update in 6 mos. to address reliability concerns.
6 No problems
I have been very pleased with this drive. I owne a Dell 8100 notebook it was a plug and play. I see others have had problems with this drive. I have not. Though I do only use it for holding music. I play it often and on random play doubt makes a difference but it has never overheated, locked up or the likes. I also have been able to hook up multi ports without haveing to turn it off. I would think that was a computer flaw not a drive flaw in loseing connectivity but Im no computer tech. I recomend this drive.
7 don't buy LaCie hard drives - they will die young
I bought a 60 GB LaCie Pocket Drive USB2/Firewire drive in August 2003, for $349.95 from Microwarehouse. Died December 2004, 3 months after manufacturers warranty ended.

Customer service was unhelpful, told me that there are only 4 manufacturers out there, and all have the same warranty. So I'm out $350.00.

My company also bought a LaCie d2 FireWire , 80 GB (300656) Hard Drive, which died after 3 months.

8 Fair
I commend this piece for it's value but every Product has it's shortcomings including this one.

My Specs: p4, win xp, 512mb memory

PROS:
-true plug and play
-great value
-small size (to help you conceptualize- about as big as a VHS cassette but lacie's peice is 3/8" thicker)
-quiet

CONS:
-overheats easily
-transfer rate is a bit slow even if it us USB2.0 (my comp is usb 2.0 capable but i do transfer large files as big as 3 to 6 gigs)

In my opinion it was worth buying because as i see it the pros outweighed the cons. I don't use this hard drive for constant use. When i want to watch a movie or listen to music i just use this bad boy. If your going to buy a dedicated hard drive why not upgrade to an internal one? a couple of my friends use their ipods for file transfers whenever we go over each others apartments and i bring this. It's 1/3 less then their cost and it's storage space is 7/8 larger.
9 UNIT HAS DIED!
I've had this drive for several months and was happy with it until I disconnected the unit while I was away for one week...since my return the PC (Wind. XP) does not recognize the drive...and no sound (hard drive spin) is coming from it. LaCie website indicates the unit can be shipped back to them for repair HOWEVER all data will be lost!!!!
10 Exactly what was promised
Plug it in, instant fast 160GB hard drive with very low footprint.

I have had LaCie Monitor for two years with no problems. Products are very high quality and perform above average. Would definitely buy again.
11 Spotty performance, useless for iTunes
I purchased this hard drive to use as my music library with my Mac and iTunes. It doesn't work. As the drive heats up, iTunes will only play portions of a song, then move on to the next song. This does not happen with other hard drives, just the La Cie Porsche design hard drives and many others have had the same problem (check the iTunes forum over at Apple.com and you'll see).

Also, when hot, the drive will frequently do odd things, showing full folders as empty. Yes, these drives are cheap compared to the prices of others on the market, but in the end, you get what you pay for.
12 Good product at a good price
I've had this drive for 6 months now without trouble.

Another reviewer complained about the drive letter changing when another device is plugged in, but this is how Windows works and has nothing to do with this drive. Same review complained that this drive is not easily bootable, but it's not advertised as a bootable drive, either, and few customers care about that anyway.
13 it's hot but it works!
i have two of these drives and i am purchasing a third. they over heated my mac g4 tower when i was stupid and put them on the top. i moved them to the side and they work perfect. i took one on the road and it was a gem
14 Very good product
I have been using this drive for 4 months and I am very pleased with it.
I am using it with 2 pc (laptop and desktop) and I perform full backups quite often.
The drive is fast and reliable. It's smaller than the maxtor and accom date drives that I have.
I recommend it.
15 Cheap in every way
So your thinking, hey this seems like a good deal. Well paying a cheap price means getting a cheap product with problems. First off the size of the disk is aproximately 149GB. Half the time it doesn't run like it's USB 2 more like 1. The most annoying thing about the drive is that it's not programmed with windows to recognize other USB devices. If you happen to turn off the disk (Which needs to be done every so often from overheating and freezing up)and plug in another USB device (like a quick drive) while It's still off, and leave that other device plugged in, the disk, when turned back on will suddenly be under a different directory and anything you were downloading will be cut off and will not complete. The data will still be there but the download relying on let's say H: as it's write directory will not appear when the drive is suddenly changed to I: or J: and so on. This isn't permanent though and you can usually get it right back to the letter you want you just end up losing your current downloads. Three stars for the good price and the fact that I've never really lost any data yet although I've only had it for 8 months.
16 Good Product, poor support
I'm happy with the speed and reliablity of the drive, however I wanted to make it bootable. I exchanged several email's with them and they eventually told me to "go find a free one on the Internet". I can't believe that they don't know how to make there own drive bootable, or even point me to a specific place to download a tool that would.

When I bought an HP USB key drive they had a small tool I could run to make the drive bootable, supplied by HP. If I can't make it bootable using format, sys.exe or any other normal means, I expect the company to provide a tool for me. I don't think that's asking too much. Poor customer service and support.

17 Very unreliable
After about an hour of use, this hard drive just stops communicating with the computer. Information can't be stored or retrieved. Turning it off and then on again sometimes helps, but not for long. Turning it off for longer (> 1 hour) does allow it to be used again, but only temporarily.

After trying everything I could think of to get it to work consistently, I returned it for a replacement. The replacement behaved exactly the same, which indicates this is probably a design flaw, rather than a defective unit.

(I'm using a Compaq PC with XP, and have had no trouble with other USB2.0 externals.)

18 Rock solid - great deal
I got this drive for less than $190 (no stupid rebates needed).
It was very easy to install on my AlienWare PC.

I use this drive for backup and mp3. So far so good. It's fast and very very quiet. I had to carry it a couple times and I appreciated the small size/weight.

I would buy it again. If you are serious about your data, it's a good purchase.

19 Great drive for PC!
I bought this new drive from LaCie a few weeks ago. So far it has been great. I am using it under XP. It is fast and quiet. It is smaller than some other external drives that I bought in the past (2 maxtor and 1 iomega). It looks very good (better than the picture...) with "Design by Porsche" on the side.
I would definitely recommend it.
20 Bad deal, Good Hand Warmer
I have a client running 8 of these drives by La Cie and they have replaced 6 of them within 1 year of purchase. They are not designed to be left running 24/7 because they overheat. My client has lost years worth of data due to the failure rate. What's with using Firewire still anyway? Get a FN clue La Cie and put a fan inside and lose the firewire, fricken MAC lovers.
21 Very good deal
This drive is very small (compared to other drives that I saw) and very quiet. It looks very good (with "Design by Porsche" on the side).
It was very easy to set up and so far it works great.
I searched the web for a good deal and I found this drive for a bit less than $199. I would buy it again.
