1 Working great with Comcast
After discovering our DSL connection had been degraded by new construction in the area it was time to try cable. We were near the limit for DSL any way but then, after some new construction increased our loop length, our DSL service was downgraded to 384k (download). A quick check of monthly service fees and it was clear cable modem service was a better deal. For us, cable service is $20 a month less and, as it turns out, the speed of cable is almost 10x faster.

Like other reviewers I decided to purchase a modem instead of rent. I checked the Comcast list of approved modems and noticed that this Linksys BEFCMU10 was on the list. I made sure to purchase a V3 model. I liked the idea of being able to stack it with my Linksys wireless router. I read elsewhere that some have had compatibility problems with other Linksys products but I had no such problems.

After calling Comcast to give them the MAC address and the serial number (both clearly printed on the modem's underside label) I was up and running. I had zero problems getting this modem connected and working.

I elected to self install with Comcast which means they send you a kit that contains a splitter to add to your home's cable input and a couple of cables. It is important with all cable modems to provide them with the strongest signal strength possible. This means you need to install the modem with nothing else "ahead" of it on the cable coming into your house. This means you should install the splitter as close to the source (where it comes into your house) as possible. If signal strength becomes an issue you can purchase signal amplifiers to boost your video signal to your TV's, etc., but a decent one with adjustable gain costs as much or more than this modem.

With a good strong signal this modem works perfectly. It stacks neatly onto an existing Linksys router too. The build quality is typical Linksys which I consider quite good for comsumer level gear. My only regret is that we did not switch sooner.
2 Very easy to set up
I bought this so I don't have to rent my modem from the cable company anymore. After reading reviews online I made sure I bought the version 2. It seems earlier versions had some kinks. Well, from my experience, they seem to have worked out all the kinks for this version.

This modem was a snap to set up. I called the cable company and provided them with the MAC address (& the serial #, though I'm not sure why they needed that) and as soon as they had the MAC address in their system I was up and running. It is working well so far.

It has a coaxial cable input and for outputs you can use either a USB or an ethernet cable connection. The front of the unit has 5 LED's that indicate (1) power (2) cable (3) link/account (4) send and (5) receive.

The power and cable lights stay lit when the modem is operating. The link/account blinks, which I guess means it has a connection with my account information at the cable company. The send and receive lights blink when the modem is passing data. While all these details may seem an afterthought it was comforting to know the modem was sending and receiving data when I first went to set it up and when I was troubleshooting (see below). My old modem, a Toshiba, only has one blinking light for the data stream and you don't know exactly what that means. Here the send light blinks first and then the receive light blinks when a response comes. When the modem is operating, this happens constantly and much quicker than I describe it.

The only problem I had was when I connected this to the Linksys wireless B router. While the box says the modem works "seamlessly" with other Linksys products, that wasn't the case initially. It was the router's fault though, because the modem operated perfectly everytime I connected it to my computer (a Mac btw, not a PC) instead of the router. In the end it just took some time, about a few hours I think, before the router could broadcast correctly.

The lights were especially useful when I was troubleshooting the router. This seems obvious but my computer picked up the router signal the moment I connected it to the modem, but I couldn't connect to the internet. The send & receive lights didn't blink, while the others were lit, so I knew there was a problem with passing the date back and forth. When the connection finally worked through the router, the lights started up again as they did when I first set up the modem. I've had problems with this router in the past so it was helpful to know it was operating correctly simply by looking at the lights on the modem. Too bad the router can't show that on its own.

Overall, this modem is a breeze to set up and is a smart purchase. At $70 it will pay for itself, vs. renting the $5/month modem from the cable company, in just over 1 year. Add to that a quality modem that hasn't needed reboots, unlike the Toshiba RCN was renting me, and the reason to purchase this modem couldn't be clearer: you save money and you get a better connection from the get-go.
3 acceptable performance
It looks better than the ugly RCA modem but it may not perform better. Like others who don't want to pay the monthly fee for the modem, I bought this to replace the RCA modem provided by Comcast. After I installed the Linksys, the connection drops frequently. I call Comcast and they sent a technician to check. The technician ran a test to check the signal strenght. It was 3. The normal range should between 0 and 16 so 3 is in the low range and he said that may be why the connection drops. The incoming coaxial cable splits two ways, one goes to the TV and the other goes to the modem. That weekens the signal further. He suggested not to split the cable and make it go to the modem directly. After that, the modem works fine. So, the major problem is not entirely on Linksys. However, if the RCA modem can maintain the connection using the same weak signal, why can't Linksys do it?
4 WARNING-Frustrating & time consuming technical support!!!!!
Please be careful of Linksys' technical support! I called the Amazon.com provided number to make sure I could replace my cable company modem with a purchased Linksys modem (I already had a Linksys router and notebook adapter). I was told it was a straight swap.

However, be warned that once you swap out the modem, your Internet connection is gone! What I wasn't told by the Amazon.com tech support person was that I would have to take the MAC address off the modem and call my cable ISP and give them that number. The Linksys instructions do say that (but only after you have swapped modems), but the person I talked to before I purchased this modem did not, so I got caught off guard and had to search for the cable company's telephone number and call them to complete installation.

After this was done, my notebook adapter could not connect to the Internet. Before the day was over, I had placed three tech support calls (to the number provided in the modem instruction). All three calls went to INDIA!!!!

While the Indian tech people do speak English, it is with an accent. They can be very hard to understand. They also have no ability to troubleshoot!!! They must follow a script.

Additionally, each tech support person had to ask the same questions all over again (e.g., model number of the modem, router, notebook adapter, cable provider name, and operating systems of your computers). [Note: Linksys prints the model numbers in extremely small type, so they are really hard to read. Additionally, you have to turn the modem and router upside down to find the model number.] Somehow the Indian tech support people think this all can change since your prior call an hour earlier.

The result is that you can not tell them what you encountered (I caused the problem that required the third call, but they were not interested in knowing what had happened).

On my second call, the man didn't really want to help me and insisted that I go to the Internet address www.linksys.com and select "Options" and pick "netsetassist" or "netsetassistant" to download. I could not understand which name even after he repeated himself. But at that address, there were no such "Options." Doing a search using "netsetassist" or "netsetassistant" didn't yield anything.

While American tech support can be bad, I found this Indian tech support time consuming and frustrating. It is as if they do not understand the Linksys product and therefore are forced to start always from the beginning regardless of what problem you have, or the level of detailed knowledge you can provide.

Yes, I'm finally got my wireless network work after installing this Linksys modem, but it was not a pleasing experience. It didn't need to take so long, or be anywhere as frustrating as it was.

In any case, be warned that you may be dealing with inflexible people who, at times, have as much difficulty understanding you as you them. The product works, but the tech support is really terrible (for reasons that are not necessary).
5 Great Cable Modem
My only regret is that I didn't buy this sooner. I've been renting my modem from Charter for over 2 years now. This modem was a breeze to set up. I followed the instructions, got it hooked up, then called Charter and gave them the mac address. He had me fill out a form that came up on my computer when I clicked IE, then restart the computer, and everything works just fine. I returned Charter's modem to them the next day and will be happy to see that rental charge off my bill from now on!
6 Works Great. A Breeze to Install.
Works great. Took less than 5 min. on the phone with the cable company to get it registered in their system.
7 Another fine LinkSys product!
Once again, perfection has been created. As usual they fubared the first few releases. But, after fixing all the lockups (version 2 and earlier) there seem to be no problems. Great product strongly recommended. (Version 3 and later only - if there is a later.)
8 I am very satisfied!
I just set up a home network, which is now working very fast with zero trouble. I use all Linksys produts, this Cable Modem, and Wireless-G Router with Speedboster and Wireless-G PC Adapter for my notebook computer. The set up of this Modem was easy, and I like the fact that I can stack up the router on top of the modem. Overall, I am happy with this network.
9 Version 2 is broken
Since it was released, the BEFCMU10 has experienced technical problems that linksys has attempted to fix by comming out with new versions of the same modem. These technical issues cannot be resolved by the end user. Updates to the modem software must be sent "down the line" from the cable end of the modem. The firmware that is shipped with version 2 of this modem is very unstable. If your ISP is not making the update availible to the modem, dont buy it.
10 What more can I say, but....
I don't know that I could add any more to Bill Buenbrazo's excellent review on the Linksys BEFCMU10 EtherFast Cable Modem, but I will try.

I too have Comcast for High-Speed Internet service. However, I was renting my cable modem from them for the past two years (after all what's five bucks a month right?). For the price of the Linksys modem and what I have been paying rent on for the past two years (do the math) it finally sank in that, "Hey, you should really buy this modem." Well, I finally listened to myself and did just that.

The Comcast folks were very helpful during my transition. Make sure you follow Bill Buenbrazo's setup instructions and you won't go wrong.

I must stress one important thing though... you need to call your high-speed provider and make sure you give them the model number, serial number and MAC address of the modem before you even try to connect and then as Bill said, "7) Make sure your cable installer or you(buyer of modem), tells the cable office the correct MAC address. Errors will lead to no Internet."

Remember, when all else fails read the directions, but I will say that I have never been disappointed with any Linksys product I have purchased yet.

I also have a Linksys PSUS4 USB PrintServer with 4 port switch, a WRT54G Wireless-G Router, a Linksys WUSB54G Wireless-G USB Adapter, and a Linksys BEFSX41 EtherFast Cable/DSL Firewall Router (4-Port 10/100 Switch / VPN Endpoint).
So far, all have been working seamlessly.

Would I recommend Linksys, hmm... I believe I just may be doing that already.

11 Overall a good modem
I am a loyal Linksys customer, but I will try not to be too biased here. Overall, this modem is great, and it never fails. BUT it never fails IF you only do casual web surfing. Things starts to get ugly when Kazaa or BitTorrent or any P2P sharing program is running. I had to reset it every couple hours. This modem simply cannot take abnormally heavy duty load. So if you are just a regular web surfer, get this modem. And if you are doing a lot of P2P sharing, skip this modem.
12 Try again with Version 3
Bought a Linksys BEFCMU10 (version 2) in January of 2003. Initially had a few problems requiring that I reset the modem. Problem turned out to be an ISP problem. Problem fixed and had a year and a half of excellent service.
Yesterday, my Linksys BEFCMU10 failed. I bought a new (version 3) and am back in business.
At $10 per month to rent a modem from my ISP, I am still money ahead buying my modem. However, the Linksys modem does get hot and the heat is probably exacerbated using the modem with a stakable Linksys router as I do.
13 Ditch the Dish, and the Comcast modem
Save money from the monthly modem rental fees and buy this one for keeps. I honestly believe that Comcast's piece of crap modem they gave me for rental (I believe it was an RCA-brand modem) caused my connection to drop off at least once a day for a few hours at random times of the day. Ever since I bought the LinkSys BEFCMU10 EtherFast Cable Modem, I've never been kicked off once. Comcast is still my cable provider, but now (thank God) I have a different modem. Save your money and sanity from the crappy Comcast RCA rental modem. You'll thank me later.
14 Nothing is "FREE" with Adelphia startup
I signed up withj Adelphia at CompUSA and paid the $69.95 + local tax. I get $20.00 mail-in rebate from Linksys and $50.00 mail in rebate from CompUSA. That'll tie up $70 for about 6 months from both mail-in rebates.

With the BEFCMU10 connected to my shut-down PC hooked up to cable and ethernet hooked up to my PC. Powered up the CableModem and my PC. Opened internet explorer and was greeted with an Adelphia web page asking for a user account number and zip code. Next page asked whther I was a new user or cghanging modems. Entered the account info and entered. New page says that it would check my modem. It took about 3 minutes and I was greeted with a smily face saying the modem was working and registered. In about 10 minutes, I was up and flying.

Worked great with the BEFSR41 V3 router.

15 It Does the Job
I got this modem from Best Buy for free and haven't had any major problems. It does get a little heat but as does any modem or router. I've had mine on for several months and it's only luke-warm. Not hot but any means. The only bad thing about this modem is the high transfer rate lock up as in other reviews. First off, on my modem this has only happened a few times and only while using BitTorrent. Unless you are a huge P2P user it's not a problem and even then it rarely locks up. It's a firmware issue not a hardware issue. So it can be fixed. A newer version of firmware has fixed the lock up problem. Most new modems should be shipped with it. If it doesn't, your ISP can upgrade the firmware if they fix it's needed. I get great speeds and have nothing bad to say about it. Also, I have a Linksys router and they do match and are stackable which looks neat and saves space.
16 V3 is better than the latest Motorola Surfboard Modems
OK, I'll probably get flamed to crispy critters for saying so, but this modem is better than the Motorola Surfboard. Hear me out. Several months ago, I signed up for Comcast cable modem Internet service. Along with that, I got a brand new Motorola SB5100 cable modem. I was renting it from comcast. I'd read many reviews on it, and believed it to be a great cable modem, based on those reviews. And it was a great modem, usually. Web pages loaded fast and online speed tests confirmed that I was pretty close to the maximum speed that the cable company had provisioned me for.

The problem was, my Internet connection with the Motorola SB5100 would mysteriously freeze on me quite frequently. Not often enough to stop me from using my Internet connection, but often enough to be really annoying. I later switched to Earthlink (Earthlink through Comcast) cable modem service. The price was lower, I was able to use my current SB5100 (still leased from comcast), and I got some free dial-up hours, also, for travelling. After my modem was re-provisioned for Earthlink, I still had the annoying freezing problem. Unplugging the modem and rebooting the computer didn't help. Many phone calls, e-mails, chat sessions and even a couple of visits from the cable company did not solve the problem.

A Linksys BEFCMU10 (V3) solved the problem!!! Since I bought this Linksys cable modem (and returned the Motorola SB5100 to Comcast), my Internet connection has been rock-solid stable, no complaints at all. Also, with the Linksys modem, my connection speed has increased, both up and down. I'm now consistently seeing online speed tests that exceed the speed I'm supposedly provisioned at, averaging about 3500 down and 500 UP!!! So the Linksys is both faster AND more reliable than the Motorola.

The Linksys was also very easy to set up. A quick call to Comcast had it set up for (Earthlink through Comcast) service. Then I threw a Netgear WGR614 wireless "g" router into the mix. I wanted to do that a long time ago, but I waited until I was sure my Internet connection was finally STABLE, as I didn't want to complicate an already iffy connection. Now all my computers have lighting fast, stable Internet connection . . . including my 802.11g notebooks. I couldn't be happier.

I know that there are many reviews that say, basically, "buy a Motorola because the Linksys is crap and the Motorola rocks!!". I believe the version makes a difference though. My Linksys BEFCMU10 is version 3. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this Linksys cable modem to all my friends. In my experience, it kicks the crap out of a Surfboard. :)

17 Linksys V2 Cable Modem... Slow (9/10th speed drop)
I bought this modem at best buy and got it for 60 after rebates. I went from the genernic modem that charter was using and pulling 300k downloads (2MB service) to linksys pulling 40k downloads. The speed test went from 1929kB to 350 kB. Unacceptable. It was easy to set up with all my linksys gear that is why I gave it 2 instead of 1 star.

The internet is so slow I could almost compare it to dialup in some ways, pull one download and surf speeds are cut to a tenth of the speed. We had MSN DSL before this and it was 500k and pulled 75k downloads so we went to charter cable for 300k downloads (and higher at times 600k +) . With this modem we are 1/10 of that.

Called linksys and they were of little help. I am RMAing this unit for a V3 and we will see how that works. For now all I can give it is a 2. Linksys really dropped the ball on this one.

18 Make sure you get the latest version - 3
I had purchased this cable modem from Amazon around September 2003. Had the same "lock-up" problem as described in some posts. Linksys tech support was not much of a use. However, since it was still under one year warranty, I exchanged it for version 3 (original was version 2). It had cost me additional $15, but version 3 works fine.
19 Looks great, but can become unstable
I bought this cable modem about six months ago because I liked the idea of its compatibility (both electronically and aesthetically) with my existing Linksys wireless router. That big stack of blue plastic and blinking green lights can be strangely satisfying. However, as of late, when under high bandwidth conditions, the modem will stop sending any data. Its status lights indicate a connection to my home network, and to the internet, but its "Send" light will extinguish and the unit will refuse to transmit any information until it's unplugged and reset. Certain webpages seem to exacerbate this. After looking online, this seems to be a common problem. I currently have the "Version 2" of this modem, and supposedly linksys is now shipping the "Version 3." I'm returning mine tomorrow in the hopes that I can find one of the newer Linksys ones on the shelves and maybe I'll be able to keep my big blue stack.
20 good modem at a good price
I was happy with the modem. installation uneventful with comcast cable modem, dell 4600 computer, netgear router, and vonage telephone service. Everything is working perfectly at good speeds. for the price ($38 after discount), beat the modem supplied by comcast
21 Okay cable modem, does lock up sometimes
I am a big fan of Linksys products. They've always been very affordable and get the job done. However, I would have to say this is my least favorite Linksys product. I bought it figuring it would look good on the "stack" with my Linksys router, switch and wireless AP.

Overall it works relatively well. However, in certain situations I ran into issues. If you run connection intensive applications that open many connections, the modem does have a tendency to lock up. Cycling power seems to correct this. I've seen other people post similar issues with connection dropping in certain situations. I am a software developer and often run applications that will open many simultaneous connections, so this was an issue for me. I have since switch modems and no longer have this issue.

Overall it works well, just requires the occasional shutdown/startup to clear it out.

22 does what it is supposed to do
My cable company was getting me for $5 a month, and I was paying it for a full year, then they lowered it to $3 a month and I wasn't so upset anymore. When I see a deal like this, I have to go for it. When a rebate is offered, this will pay for itself in no time at all. I opened it up, and without reading the directions, hooked it up just like the one the cable company gave me. Gave the cable company a call, and gave them the MAC address and now I'm saving $3 a month. Works just like the Scientific Atlanta box that I had. It sits on top of my SMC router and fits nicely.
23 You can have mine
If you want to use the internet, don't buy this piece of **^$&&*(.
24 BA-ZING! Use this modem if you are using other Linksys!
First of all, if you are like me, you want to pull your HAIR OUT every time you see that cable modem rental charge on your bill. I wishe I had bought my CMU earlier, because, in the amount of money I've paid COX or Comcast, I could have bout several modems. So, there is reason #1 to buy your own modem!

Secondly, this modem, like all linksys products, is easily configured and has nice web administration. My modem has some monitoring features much better than the Toshiba modem that I was using with Comcast (Cox also uses it. Another modem is made by Scientific American, which is a good modem). The biggest problem I had was with Comcast. For whatever reason, they continued to cofuse (B)ravo with Eight (8) on the MAC address so it couldn't provision properly. Just make sure you have all your MAC and Serial information for your provider... your ISP probably won't let the modem auto-provision... so you'll need to set it up before using the modem with the provider.

The other nice thing about this modem is, if you are like me, it integrates really well with other linksys products. My config is a CMU with a Wireless-B router. I have to say that when I hooked up the CMU with the router, it ran MUCH better than the Toshiba and the router. I don't know exactly why this is the case - ostensibly there should be no reason for it.. but the CMU and the Wireless-B from linksys are totally sympatico or something...

You will need some sort of router with this sucker. I don't recommend hooking your comp right to the back of the modem box. There are USB/ethernet drivers for it - and I didn't try them, but, linksys' stuff in the past works pretty simply... and I imagine this stuff is as easy to use.

The modem status lights are pretty straightforward... although they are kind of hard to see what's what without getting up close to it (that's kind of a probleem with all Linksys stuff tho - it's not a biggie).

My modem runs a bit hot - so make sure you don't place anything over it (unless it is another linksys product - which has enough clearance on the feet). It is kind of nice in my situation because I have my modem and whatnot in the ceiling of my TH - and it keeps the units nice and warm...

Otherwise, great modem, great price, very reliable, and totally FLYS with other linksys stuff. I say hook it up to a BEFSR41 or a Wireless-B and you are GOOD TO GO!

Good luck

25 Junk
After 5 month's of use the Linksys BEFCMU10 went to crap. I have received unbearable tech/customer service from Linksys about the modem and their BEFSR41 router, I decided to buy the Motorola Surfboard SB5100. The Motorola seems to run faster and smoother than the Linksys ever did. I do not recommend the Linksys BEFCMU10 modem to anybody.
26 High hopes, wouldn't work.
Plugged it in, called the cable company, couldn't get it to identify the incoming cable signal. Called Comcast, called Linksys. Both very helpful, both agreed it was a bad modem. Returned it (easy as always) got a new one, same exact sequence of events. Amazon rerfused to send me another on to try a third time. Can't give it a higher rating even though all othe linksys products have worked perfectly for me.
27 Piece of cake. Faster than Motorola SB4200 by far.
Great value for the money. When I first set up my home network I was using the free Motorola SB4200 modem from Cablevision OOL. Screen pop was okay running through my router...not as good as running the modem straight to the pc (which was decent). Thought I'd try the Linksys Ehterfast Cable Modem with my BEFSX41 router...POPITY POP POP! What a difference! Great combination. You can't go wrong. Don't bother with crappy hand-me-down modems, break out the crowbar and buy a Linksys modem and a Linksys router and hit the net.
28 Affordable, fast, full featured
Nice cable modem for the price, especially if you have other Linksys equipment (e.g. router) since you can stack it.

Have been using Linksys equipment for years and have been fairly pleased.

29 This is a great product right out of the box!
My COM21 cable modem died on me after about 7 years of service, and I went and bought this Linksys modem. It is much faster than what I was getting out of COM21, and looks great on my desk stacking nicelyon top of my Linksys router and VI-FI Acess point. I am using at least 7 different products from Linksys during last 4-5 years and I had never have problem with any of them. Linksys products are simple, reasonably priced and they work workwonderful. higly recommended!
30 Reliability Problems
Setup easy, performance fine, but died in a few months. Same problem with BEFSR41 Router. This seems more than just coincidence; previously used Linksys and they were good products. Now they are substandard from reliability standpoint. Am replacing all network products with Netgear; will not buy any further Linksys products.
31 FAST IS FANTASTIC!
THIS CABLE MODEM IS SUPERFAST! I wouldn't have bought one of these, except my cable company started charging me $5 a month rental fee for their mediocre Motorola Surfboard. I connected via the Ethernet port (not the USB), and with one call to my ISP (cable company) I was up and running. Highly recommended for folks with Adelphia Cable's Powerlink (east coast).
32 Amazing
Linksys is just great stuff all around. Works great, sets up easy, does what it should END OF STORY... Highly recommended...
33 Hangs every once in a whule
I have 3-4 computers connect to this modem at any given time.
If there is a lot of traffic the modem just hangs !
I need to restart it (a 30sec process) and everything is back to normal ... but it's really annoying that I have to restart it ..
the freq is about 2 times a week and if I create a lot of traffic even every 20 min !!
34 Saving Money Times Two
Picked up this little gem after my last modem rental -- $3.00 a month for the past two years to "rent" one from MediaOne > AT&T > Comcast. Back in September, Amazon was running a "killer" deal: $59.99 for the modem, free shipping, AND a $30 mail-in rebate. Figured a ten month ROI, plus improved firmware, what did I have to lose? Comcast set up was even easier than following the Quick Start instructions. After hooking up the new modem to my PC (NOT the router like I tried to do the first time), just enter their special site on my browser (sas.we1.attbb.net), enter some info from my cable bill, reboot, and I'm up and flying. No MAC screw-ups or anything. Plus I like the way my "Linkys" look stacked up. If you're considering this modem, don't forget the matching router. Happy webbing!
35 Modem locks up During p2p file sharing
See the other comments about the modem locking up! This modem will lock up if you do peer to peer file sharing. My experience was that the modem would have to be power cycled every 1-2 hours when doing large downloads. I replaced this modem with a DLINK DP102 and have had no resets. I'll sell my Linksys on Ebay.
36 It works like a charm! Great value for the money!
Howdy folks!

Bill the game developer back to tell you about the Cable Modem(BEFCMU10) I purchased from Amazon.com; to add Internet to my wireless network.

Comcast is our cable provider here in Seattle. If you are interested in adding internet to your wired/wireless network; I suggesst the BEFCMU10 as your modem of choice. Why? Check out these features:

Stackable design
5 easy to read LEDs
Quick boot-up
Comcast uses Linksys for the network stuff
etc.

Here is what I did for pain-free installation.

1) Connect the modem via RJ-45 directly to the computer, if you can. You want to make sure you don't have a dead modem.

2) Your computer should be able to see the modem and try to configure it. I have XP Pro and it saw the modem fine.

3) You can configure it with the computer OR connect the modem to your network since you know the modem is not dead.

4) If you decide to install on network, turn off the power to computers, router, etc. Install the modem with your CAT5 cable to your router. Turn on your modem, let it boot up, then fire up the router, then your computers. Make sure you watch the LEDs with each step.

5) Watch your LEDs carefully, noting that your router is picking up the signal from the modem.

6) If everything works great, you are about to enter broadband internet and loving it. All is needed now is for your cable company to create your account, put in your modem model #(serial code) and MAC address.

7) Make sure your cable installer or you(buyer of modem), tells the cable office the correct MAC address. Errors will lead to no internet.

8) Install the software given to you by your cable company on the main computer that you will use the most. I would install the software on a computer that is wired to your network, if at all possible. The software will engage the cable networks to finalize your setup per your account and MAC address on your modem.

9) This modem might take anywhere from a 30 seconds to 2 minutes to find and acquire the signal from your cable company, so don't jump to conclusions that it doesn't work or that your modem is dead.

10) Now, turn everything off again, starting with computers, router and then modem. Wait about 2 minutes and then turn everything on the reverse: MODEM(letting it bootup), then ROUTER(letting it bootup) and last, COMPUTERS.

11) Reconfigure your web browser to connect from LAN, instead of dial-up. You should now be able to connect to the internet through your cable modem and cable company.

Final thoughts:

If I remember correctly, I did not have to use the installation CD that came with the modem. Just follow the "Quick Installation" procedure. The boot-on and boot-off hints I picked up from other users, thanks guys; it works like a charm. The CABLE LED should remain solid when you are "registered" with your cable company. You might have to register more than once, if the first time it doesn't work. If your computer freezes in the middle of installing the cable company software; like mine did, don't panic. Just reboot the computer and start from the beginning of the install again. Although I like DSL; I was fed-up with all the DSL hype because I can't get DSL here. Our phone lines in our area are old which translates to mean "crap". Plus having DSL, you might have two(2) bills; one from phone company AND one from the ISP for your DSL broadband account. Cable broadband is just ONE bill and no-hidden fees or surprises.

I would recommend the BEFCMU10 to anybody who is interested in cable broadband. No doubt in my mind you will love the speed and the ability to chit-chat on the phone while you cruise the net.

Enjoy!!!

37 Good deal so far
Just received the modem. Unpacked. Followed the instalation manual and it's done. You will just have to call your cable provider to setup the MAC. Be ready to give them the MAC, number, Serial number and the modem specification number. The MAC number and the serial number are provided below the equipment but Linksys smartly attached those numbers right on top of the soft box so you don't need to flip the modem when the operator ask you for this data.
All process ... arrive at home and be connected with the new modem took less than half hour !!! (it's because the huge delay to talk with the Comcast customer service).
Another tip ... if you are using a Router (in my case wireless connection) after you are done with your cable provider, turn off everything and then turn on in the following order: modem - router - computer.
The modem seems to provide slightly faster connection than my rented one - RCA DCM245.
That's it save money in your cable bill and enjoy the rebate from Amazon. The savings that you get with this modem are gonna to be fully paid in ten months.
Good deal so far.
38 I love broadband
It does exactly what it's suposed to do, which is a resounding mark of support in the electronics industry. After the cable company got things right on their end (three visits, including one to replace the main line), the thing started right up. I lost the internet connection once, but reset the modem and restarted my computer and it came back up. You just plug it in, call with your MAC address (from the modem), and you're up and running. The instructions make it look slightly more complicated if you need to use USB, because you have to install a driver. I'm using ethernet and it runs right out of the box.
For those of you looking at this modem because you're considering high speed, all I can say is go for it. I was using dial up for over 7 years, until about 12 hours ago, and I can say that I've hardly gotten off the computer. It makes a world of difference, and I'll never go back unless I go broke.
39 Not a reliable modem - too many resets and poor tech support
I experienced an issue with my internet connection resetting every 4 hours ever since I purchased my Linksys cable modem. I called my firewall manufacturer, sent extremely detailed diagnostic logs, and ruled out the firewall as the cause. I then had the cable company check the line and they changed several connectors and removed a splitter to give me a very high signal strength. Still the connection reset every 4 hours. I called Linksys technical support and they recommended that I "unplug the cable modem for 120 seconds to clear out all of that bad packets and the that will fix the problem." Wrong, no change. I got a loaner Motorola SB5100 modem from my cable company and my connection did not go down one single time during a 14-day period (verified by my firewall and the cable company router.) Goodby Linksys DOCSIS 1.0 cable modem. I've switched to a much more reliable and more advanced DOCSIS 2.0 Motorola SB5100.
40 Reliable, Fast Performer with Easy Setup
I'm using this cable modem with Adelphia PowerLink service and getting great results. Setup was very simple - plug n play was so quick that I almost missed it. Since then, it's just done exactly what I've asked it to do with no problems. If you want to plug it in and forget it, then this is a very good choice for you - just check with your ISP for compatibility first.
41 Great product, previous reviews were correct
I recently switched to a cable ISP and researched the purchase of a modem through AMAZON. I found the customer reviews very helpful as I ran into the same problems most other people have. These include the fact that the USB connection for this modem doesn't work (does LINKSYS read these reviews?)and that the cable company's "techie" kept on entering the wrong MAC and serial numbers. Once the cable guy hung up and re-called, getting another "techie", the codes were entered correctly and the modem was up and running. Now, will this "crash" after about a year as the majority of the older reviews say and will I spend hours on the phone with a clueless LINKSYS technician?
42 Always having to reset the modem
This modem works marginally..I have had to reset the modem at least twice a month since I purchased it..After nine months it died...
43 Why Not 5
Well not to be to picky but the price was right and this modem has yet to fail me. I have purchased 3 now and no problems but the truth is you should never really expect your broadband modem to fail. One Exception would be possible electrical damage but other then that if the thing doesn't work out of the box then you either bought the wrong thing or it is broken. Anyways back to my rating I would have givin this product a 5 if it was DOCSIS 2.0 but 1.1 is good enough for my needs at the moment and truthfully there is little difference. The reason for a 4 rating at least is this modem keeps itself cool. For one other modems I have used tend to give off a lot of heat. There are more then adequate vents on the top and bottom of the modem. When you take into account how small this modem is compared to others it really works better. This is a good thing since you can stack linksys items and if you are like me and want to keep them out of the way and ususally in a less then desirably ventilated area you don't want it to overheat since that can lead to a life reduction in the product. So Enjoy your bandwith.
44 Fantastic with Adelphia Cable
Just got this and a Linksys Router set up for a PC with Windows XP and an old laptop with windows 98. The install took minutes for both Windows XP & 98. Fantastic speed through Adelphia. Trivial Install. Two thumbs up.
45 Excellent Product
I have had this modem connected for three weeks now and it seems to be faster than the modem I was using from Cox Cable. It also works great with the WAP54G that I got.
46 This modem has major design flaw
This modem has a design flaw that causes it to lock up if the bandwidth gets too high. I am fortunate to have an ISP that provides very high bandwidth, and this modem locks up anytime the bandwidth exceeds 1.5 Mbps for more than a few minutes. I know several other people on various cable networks that have the same problem. It works fine as long as you are only playing games, surfing, etc. but if you download a lot of files or use file sharing networks, do not buy this modem!
47 Works out of box with Charter
This is the first cable modem I have purchased and was warry about problems I had heard of others having. Opened it up and called my ISP to change the MAC address (read it off the bottom of the modem). They said it would take about 15 minutes for the modem to connect ... 5 minutes later it was connected and working fine. I figure without that [money amount]/month charge it will pay for itself in no time.
48 Good Modem
I tried both the Toshiba PCX2200 and this cable modem. I found the Toshiba one is a bit more rigid but the linksys one is a bit faster. I do have a problem with this modem. I seem to have to screw and unscrew the cable connection most of the time for the connection when turning on and off the modem. I agree with the last reviewer on the heat problem. When they are separated, they are cool but when they are stack, they get hot. That's the only thing I don't like about stacking especially when they are turn on at all time. Anyone experience melt down?
49 A great cable modem, but it gets hot!
I don't know why I waited two years before purchasing my own modem. I would have saved 2 years' worth of modem rental fees with Comcast Cable.

This is a great modem, and replaces an RCA modem I was renting that was always going offline. I NEVER have to reset the Linksys modem (pulling the plug), and the performance seems a tad faster and more consistent. If you have a Linksys router, their devices are all stackable, so you can save desk space.

I rated it 4/5, only because of one bad feature: heat. While Linksys devices are stackable, the devices get really HOT when stacked on top of each other. I don't know if it would cause a meltdown or anything, but right now I'm trying to figure out how to create some buffer between the two. When they're apart, each stays cool, so I'm pretty sure it's just a question of being too close without enough air circulation.

50 I returned it. It wasn't compatible!
I returned the Linksys BEFCMU.10;ver2, because I didn't check which version Linksys modem was compatible with my local cable company's system before I purchased. This version(#2), at the time I purchased, wasn't. Had it been compatible, I'm sure it would've worked fine. I've not had any trouble with Linksys products in the past. I've rated this modem with a 3 as I wasn't able to test it.
51 Great product
I replaced the Toshiba modem that I was renting from Cox ($15/mo) with this Linksys cable modem. Modem prices have dropped considerably since I got cable 2-1/2 yrs ago. The setup was very easy (I get nervous around computers). I used the ethernet port to make the connection. It took a simple phone call to Cox to change their settings to match my new address and I was up and running in no time. Haven't had any problems. I use this cable modem in conjunction with the Linksys 4-port router. Another convenience is that the cable modem can be stacked with the cable router.
52 Works great with Cox
I bought this modem and did a self-install with Cox High-Speed internet and was up and running in about 10 minutes. I highly recommend this modem.
53 Easy to set up, and it works !!!
I just purchased the Linksys BEFCMU10 ver 2 and replaced a Toshiba modem that I was renting from Cox. I literally opened the box, set up the modem, called Cox to update the MAC address and serial number for the new modem, and was back online within 15 - 20 minutes. I connected my pc directly to the modem to make sure it was working, and everything was ok. I didn't lose any speed by changing from the Toshiba, and I may have gained a little. Next, I powered down the modem, connected it to my Linksys Wireless Cable/DSL Router, powered both units, and once again, I was back online....wireless mode now. This unit is much smaller and lighter than the Toshiba, but I am very happy with the purchase.
54 Works just as advertised
I signed up for AT&T Broadband (now Comcast) cable Internet access, and afer reviewing many alternatives (including just letting them provide me with a modem for a few bucks more per month), I decided to buy this. It worked perfectly, right out of the box, with no hassles. The installer even said it is one of his favorites to install, because it almost always works. I remain very pleased; speeds are high, configuration was simple, and it integrated smoothly.
55 Happy
I have used this modem for about 5 monthes very happy with it saves me the cost of renting a modem from Comcast. I am alwasys on line and my downloads are very quick and my email also.
56 Nice, but it was difficult to install.
Rather than continuing to rent a modem from my ISP I bit the bullet and bought this modem. I may have had more difficulty than most with the "Easy Installation". I had to spend an hour on the phone with the ISP's service department, then another 45 minutes with Linksys service after it crashed.

Every thing is working great now and I notice a definite increase in speed while on the internet.

57 works great
I'm running WInXP on a 1.6 GHz P4. It works great, no problems whatsoever. I am considering using their wireless router/adapter soon. Way to go Linksys!
58 Good product; Extremely easy to setup
It took me only 10 minutes to call my ISP (Comcast) and get this cablemodem provisioned. It is that simple and easy. Some people said that Amazon.com was shipping version 1 of this product but the fact is that they are now shipping V2. I got mine as the one shown on the picture. I definitely recommend this product if you do not want to keep paying $5 to your ISPs forever!
59 Works just fine with AT&T Broadband/Comcast, easy setup
Very easy 4-step process to install. I've had a leased modem for about a year and purchased this modem to save $3/month that I was being charged to lease the modem through AT&T. Only setup issue I had was that I am using a Linksys Wireless Access point DSL/Cable router and I needed to disconnect this for my cable company to setup my new modem for some reason. After they setup the new modem I hooked it back up to my Wireless router and everything works fine again.
60 Modem Exchange
I purchased this modem on December 23, 2002 when the modem I was using went south. This modem's small size makes it convenient to sit on top of my tower. I find the lights on this modem easier to see than the lights on my previous modem. The installation instructions were simple and easy to follow. I plan to purchase a Linksys cable firewall router in the near future. I would recommend this product to anyone in the market for a cable modem. I would have given it a 5 star rating if it had the ability to unpack and install itself. Yup, I find it a good product.
61 Solid Value
I bought my Linksys Etherfast almost two years ago now. It has been solid and easy to use. I had it set up in less than five minutes and easily recovered from my ISP changes when AT&T left @Home to use their own attbi.com network. It has run without difficulty since I installed it. It certainly could use more flexibility in the firewall configuration but it does do the job. Previous firmware updates wiped out configuration on the switch, but the latest ones seem to hold the configurations just fine. If you want the extra security and ease of use this a the right switch for the price.
62 Simply delightful!
I absolutely love Linksys products. I am a Cox Broadband customer and the set-up for this cable modem took all of five minutes. It took me longer to get it out of the box and get the cables unwrapped than it did to connect it and be back on the internet. Their customer service is great too - I had a problem with my Cable/DSL Router and Linksys immediately sent me a replacement in a matter of a few days. These are great products at great prices - I wholeheartedly recommend anything from Linksys.
63 Works great with cox.net
I finally replaced the Motorola modem that I was renting from Cox for the past two years with this Linksys cable modem. Setup was easy and it was up and running right away after Cox (San Diego) changed their settings to match my new modem.

Update: one year later and it's still going fine, no problems.

64 Linksys That Couldn't Link
After purchasing, tried to install on my computer. After installing drivers, could not get unit to communicate with my IP.
Used my IP Tech Support and Linksys Tech Support with no luck.
Purchased Motorola Surfboard SB4200 and it works great.
65 Linksys That Couldn't Link
After purchasing, tried to install on my computer. After installing drivers, could not get unit to communicate with my IP.
Used my IP Tech Support and Linksys Tech Support with no luck.
Purchased Motorola Surfboard SB4200 and it works great.
66 fast
Im a network tech and was hesitant to go to cable. I found that I couldn't go with DSL, so I bought this modem (and purchased cable service) and whamo...715K download\225K upload. This modem rocks and with ATTBI too. I also went with the Dlink router (the fairly [ok] one) and networked all 6 of my computers to the internet. this required additional equipment, however, since they were already networked via dialup, it was no problem.

I give this modem a thumbs up.

67 Lightening fast!
Easy install, worked right out of box. Just plug it in and everything is done!
Offical tests showed only 5% difference compared to the old one leased from Adelphia, but it is really much faster, at least 30%!
Especially when you download big files from some fast servers.

Strongly recommend to everybody!

68 Don't Rent, buy Do the math
Renting your current modem? Don't waste your money on a rental that could break down. You could have purchased the modem. You probably won't go back to dial-up, so make a wise investment.
69 modem
dissapointed . quite working after 3 days linksys replaced with no problem but had to pay shipping back. you think they should of paid for shipping. their product failed . not my fault it faild
70 EXCELLENT CABLE MODEM
Works like a dream with no fuss, no worry and minimal installation. Using a DELL "DIMENSION 8200", this was less than a P and P job. In fact, the USB connection is redundant because the connection goes live to cable with just a coax to the cable port, and a CAT 5 or above link to the NIC. Beats SIEMENS and D-LINK for consistency and robustness. Minimal fuss all the way. About the only Necessary thing is a Firewall or preferably Norton INTERNET SECURITY, which stops any and every problem from Back door Hacker entry to unwanted spam and advertising.
71 Awesome
Using with Cox. Easy set up and much faster than the Toshiba.
72 [company] is now shipping the BEFCMU10 version 2
...Setup on Cox couldn't have been easier. I called their technical support, gave them the MAC number and swapped out the old rental COM21. It came right up and my connection speed is 10% faster than the old COM21. Now I get the maximum speed for my level of service.

Ignore [company]alternate photo showing the modem standing vertically, that's the old version 1 modem.[company]is shipping the version 2 which normally sets horizontal and is stackable with other Linksys products.

73 An Excellent Product
Before purchasing this modem, I was paying $$$ per month to lease a Motorola Surfboard (SB4101) modem from my ISP. To make matters worse, I had to find a place for the modem, that would be out of the way of all the other wires running to/from my PC. This made it difficult to reset the modem if I needed to. I already owned a 4-port Linksys router, and wished I could stack the cable modem on top of it, thus making my life a lot easier. Linksys has its head on straight. By making several of its products similar in appearance, each component can be stacked on top of the other (similar to rack-mounted appliances), to save space, and keep wires and cables more streamlined. Now that I have the Linksys cable modem, everything looks nice and neat and is so much easier to manage. Thank you, Linksys. Keep up the good work.
74 No problems, yet!
I've had this modem now for a week with absolutely no problems. The only thing I had to do to get this to work right was plug it in. It worked great right from the start.
75 Modem
Modem arrived ahead of time and was very easy to install now running my internet with it.
76 Linksys BEFCMU10 cable modem - excellent
I bought this modem to replace the RCA modem rented from Comcast. I opened the box, obtained the MAC number, serial number, and model number and called Comcast tech support. They logged in the information and then I powered everthing down and connected the modem using the ethernet cable. I also have a hub connected to the modem output for another computer. I powered up and everything worked perfectly. Couldn't ask for more than that.
77 Linksys modem version
The version sold me was version 1. This is an old version. Version 2 is the current version. Requests for the version before purchased received evasive replies. Version 2 has more features. So make sure you get the current version
78 Linksys Cable Modem (BEFCMU10)
Excellent product. I have purchased 4 of these cable modems for myself & other family members using AT&T Broadband in the Seattle area. I haven't had a single issue yet. I have also used Linksys router/switches & network cards, both wired & wireless & they are easy to setup & use. Overall, the company produces good quality products.
79 Great product...but loud
Looks great, sets up easily, and performs flawlessly.
One main problem though: it buzzes like a bee is stuck inside. The power supply drones constantly and is very annoying.

Not sure if this was normal, so I spent 15 minutes discussing this with their Tech Support line, which never seemed to understand what I was taking about. I finally determined that YES this is normal.
So I recommend it, just don't use it in a quiet room.

80 Easy setup, great performance
After getting tired of spending $$$ a month to rent a cable modem I bought the Linksys Etherfast. It's been stellar in every way. Setup was quick and simple with no glitches. Once installed, it has performaed reliably and and with all the speed you would expect from a cable modem. The lights on the front panel are simple and easy to read and it is very simple to operate. In summary, this is really a great cable modem and the price is very reasonable. It would be an excellent purchase for anyone ready to get broadband Internet access.
81 Brilliant Modem. Must Buy
...I then saw this modem, and having had an excellent history with Linksys, decided to buy it. I had the modem up and running in 10 minutes, 7 of which were being on hold with the cable company :). That was over 3 months ago, and since then I have had the modem on 24/7, never turned it off, and it hasn't overheated, shut down, de synchronized, etc. Beautiful flawless performance, and an EXCELLENT modem for my network. Why are you still reading this? Just buy it, you won't be disappointed.
82 Modem was either defective or wouldn't work with Cox
I was really excited to get this modem at a good price.
Got it in the mail yesterday and called my ISP (Cox in Virginia to set up.)
Gave the tech the MAC address and we could never get it to work.
Not sure if
A. the modem is defective
B. this version of the modem won't work with COX
C. I had a bad tech on the phone with me.

I just had the tech put in the rental's MAC (a Toshiba PCX1100) and everything was back up.
Guess I'm gonna ship this bad boy back and buy something else.....

83 Best deal... SOOOO easy to set up!
My parents just joined the world of high-speed internet today, and I got them this brand of cable modem in order to save the leasing costs of one. Well, setting it up was a true breeze (like five minutes) and best of all, the price was unbeatable. I have absolutely no complaints about it and only nice things to praise it for. Way to go, Linksys! I am on my way to purchasing their wireless card to hook up with the wireless network in school.
84 Different Image Then Shown
I recently purchased the modem. When I got it today, I noticed that it was not the newiest cable modem v2. it was the older one, which stands up and is not stackable with other Linksys products.
If you want to purchase the modem, so you can stack it with the router, watch out. The current image that is shown in the Amazon site is the newier one which they are not shipping.
85 No hassles!
Works just perfect. I use COX. I initially had problems setting up the modem and the connection. Only to discover later that the problem was with the cable company. They did not register my MAC address properly. So check to make sure that your cable company has the right MAC address and everything should be fine.
86 Nice modem, works like a charm
This is my first broadband purchase after doing some review. I am very happy with the modem. It is really plug and play. I did have to do some configuration to setup the wired network. I have not upgraded to wireless but plan to purchase Linksys based on the modem's ease of use. I would give it 5 stars only if I owned it longer and it still runs well and if it works well with wireless.
87 Works great--speeds as promised.
I ordered this to arrive just before establishing my ATTBI service. Even though I signed on for basic installation only, the tech who came to set up the wiring also set the modem up (even though it's not included on the ATTBI basic installation). Speeds are as promised--a definite upgrade from dial-up service.
88 Awesome Modem, Wrong Picture
Hello! I have justy renectly purchased this modem at Best Buy, a chain store in my area. My modem has the same model number, but the modem looks totally different. The new one stands up or lays flat, it doesnt look like a router, and its small, about 6 inches high when stood up. None the less, both modems have great performence, weathear you have the new-ly styled one or the first one, both work great. Go to Linksys.com to see the new one and how it looks, Great buy, Better than all 5 of my other cable modems!
89 Works like a dream...
About 1 month ago, I purchased this product. I dragged it home, hooked it up, made a call to ATTBI...lo and behold it was running in about 10 minutes. All they needed to do was register the MAC address and re-set-up the account.

I am running 2 computers (via a Linksys router) through it and I have had no issues.

I saw an earlier review which said ATTBI did not support this product. That is true, to an extent. They will not help you with the modem itself, but they do set up the MAC address to get it to work.

One odd thing that did happen though. For some reason, my account was listed as suspended the next day. However, that was quickly resolved with one phone-call.

Overall, I would highly recommend this product. It was easy to install, works great, AND it has a nice small footprint (takes up little space on the desk).

90 Highly Recommend
The unit was exactly what I expected and needed. I was replacing a RCA rental provided by Comcast. It took longer to get Comcast to add it then it did to install. Included CAT 5 and USB cables for connecting.
91 Good investment. Quit renting at this price if you can.
For $10/month rental fee Cox made the decision to buy a cable modem an easy one once prices dropped below $100. I've had mine for 5 months now and noticed an immediate increase (about 10%) in both down and upstream bitrates compared to the COM21 modem it replaced. Surprisingly the cable modem swap was handled easily over the phone with Cox support.

My only complaint with the modem is it tends to run warm to the touch. The Linksys hub that sits next to the modem stays cool. In my experience, hardware that's warm to the touch doesn't last that long in continuous operation. I took a quiet 60mm fan and simply placed it on top of the modem ventilation holes pulling air through the modem. I'll never know if this prevented modem failure, but for about $5 for the fan I figure it's a good idea since it keeps it cooler than it would be otherwise.

92 Compatibility Problems with AT&T
This modem did not work with the AT&T service at my house (I tried two different units) even though AT&T apparently supports this modem. AT&T service person came by and confirmed that the signal was OK and also tested with both a Toshiba and Motorola modem.

Linksys tech support was easy to get to and generally helpful - although they could not solve my particular problem.

I ended up returning and getting a Motorola 4200 which works fine.

93 Great Product, Pays for itself in a few months
Easy setup, a must have for any broadband cable service subscriber. Called the cable company before I bought the modem to make sure it was compativle, then called the cable company after I recieved my modem in the mail, and gave them the model and mac address numbers(clearly labeled on modem). Then I just returned my old modem that I was renting ... and came home and the new modem was up and running, it was that easy.
94 Linksys BEFCMU10 Cable Modem
I redily recomend this product to anyone that wants/needs their own cable modem. Since we purchased this product our system has been up 24x7 without a glitch and yeilds much better throughput than the one the cable company supplied. It took all of about 5 minutes to install, and that included the phone call to register with the cable company.
95 Works great with AT&T Cable
Works great:
1) Get your Account # ready, and registration # (last 9 digits of Acct #)
2) Turn computer off
3) If you have a router, take it out of the loop, connect directly from computer to the modem thru ethernet port
4) Connect cables
5) Turn on cable modem, let boot up
6) Turn on computer
7) Goto registration page (you probably need to call AT&T Broadband for this info)
8) You are good to go... turn off computer, insert router (if you have one)
96 Lynksys Cable Modem
Lynksys, A brand name I always trust for quality. The one I ordered was defective, But don't fret thats a rare for this company. Linksys has been int the networking business for a long time now and I will continue to buy their products, and I think you should to.
97 WinXP and USB connection not compatible yet
It took a while to isolate the problem I was having with this modem - complete crashes virtually any time I attempted to download something or surf the internet - and it took a second phone call to Linksys support to get a tech who was familiar with this issue, but according to her the existing drivers will NOT work using the USB connection on a WinXP system. They are working to get updated drivers out. She said an ethernet card would resolve this problem. I spent an extra $11 locally on the ethernet card and cable and it now works perfectly. I was on hold for less than one minute both times I called their support line. And it worked fine with Win98 prior to my upgrade to WinXP. I'm very happy with it.
98 strike one...
First modem was dead out of the box. On it's way back to Amazon now with a replacement on the way to me. Couldn't get it to synch with Cox Cable in Northern VA. I worked with Cox support...tried cycling power, re-provisioning, unplugging for hours...nothing. When the installer guy hooked up his (Toshiba) modem, it synched immediately. After two days of trying to synch my Linksys, I decided it was dead.

Also...Wish Linksys would re-label the lights. Seems a bit confusing the way it is (see earlier reviews). My "cable" light never stayed lit (like you would assume it should)...but regardless...I couldn't get an IP address from their DHCP server. I have confidance in Linksys products, so I still give this modem 3/5 stars. I'm sure the next one will work fine (*crossing fingers*).

99 Worth Every Penny
I was tired of the ...per month rental from the cable company and selected the Linksys BEFCMU10 as a replacement. I have used other Linksys products to build my home network and am quite pleased with the reliability, performance and most importantly the "price". The modem was nothing more than one 10 min telephone call to COX Communications with the MAC address and I was back on the net in 15 minutes.
Great product!! Buy it.
100 WORKS WELL WITH AT&T BROADBAND
First I need to thank all of you guys who gave the Linksys cable modem 4 and 5 stars. If it had not been for your reviews I would have sent this great modem back to Amazon.

I spent 6 hours trying to get this modem working, getting help from 4 different techs at AT&T. They told me that this modem was bad and that the cable light needed to stay on and that the Linksys modem would not register with their system. They told me I needed to send it back and get another one. {ALL FALSE} So finally I told them to connect my (their) old modem back up. Their modem worked fine.

As I was getting ready to pack my new Linksys modem up to send it back to Amazon. I decided to try it one more time. Following the exact sequence they used to connect their modem. And would you believe it? It works!!!

My problems:
1. bad tech support.
2. must remove router to register modem.
3. given wrong registration address. (MOST IMPORTANT)
4. computer must be turned off before you turn on modem.

Fool proof procedure to be up and running in 10 minutes:

1. Turn computer off.
2. If you have a router, take it out of the loop. connect directly from your computer to the modem thru the ethernet port.
3. Connect the cable.
4. turn on power to the Linksys modem, allow it to boot up.
5. turn on your computer
6. go to the registration page to register your modem. You MUST do this twice, for some reason it does not work the first time. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT ADDRESS FROM AT&T. They failed to tell me I needed to use "https://" instead of "http://" it won't work without the "s"
enter your account # and registration #.
7. You should be working. Reconnect your router.

"Dot-Product really works! Calculating Z-axis force components has
never been easier."
Yes, you too can take advantage of the amazing properties of Dot-Product. Use
it to calculate forces, velocities, displacements, and virtually any vector
components. How much would you pay for it? But wait, it also calculates the
work done in Joules, Ergs, and, yes, even BTU's. Divide Dot-Product by the
magnitude of the vectors and it becomes an instant angle calculator! Now, how
much would you pay? All this can be yours for the low, low price of $19.95!!
But that's not all! If you order before midnight, you'll also get "Famous
