Wire-speed switching and Linksys reliability in an 8-port Gigabit desktop switch
The Gigabit 8-Port Workgroup Switch provides non-blocking, wire speed switching for your 10, 100, and 1000 megabit network clients.
Drop this switch in place of your current workgroup hub or switch, and you can upgrade your high-requirement workstations to full Gigabit speeds as necessary, while continuing to service other clients at their current speeds.
Or build your network from the ground up, with appropriate link speeds for each user's requirements.
Apply this switching power to your current hub-based Ethernet network, and your data traffic efficiency will improve several times over.
Connect your Gigabit-equipped workstations to the Switch's 10/100/1000 ports for full-duplex, dedicated bandwidth of up to 2000Mbps! It's perfect for graphics, multimedia, and other applications that have to move large files across the network quickly.
With the Gigabit 8-Port Workgroup Switch, you can connect your existing 10/100 Ethernet network to your Gigabit server backbone without any additional equipment.
All ports are auto-negotiating, and have automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover detection, so you don't have to worry about the cable type.
Address learning and aging is supported, as well as 802.3x flow control with head-of-line blocking prevention to keep your high-speed clients from bogging down in lower-speed traffic.
The Gigabit 8-Port Workgroup Switch from Linksys is the perfect solution for your desktop Gigabit and 10/100 networking needs.
- Eight 10/100/1000Mbps, half/full duplex, switched ports
- Forwards and filters packets at non-blocking, full wire speed
- All ports have auto speed negotiation and auto MDI/MDI-X crossover detection
- Supports address learning and aging, 802.3x flow control and head-of-line blocking prevention
1 This switch is LOUDER than you can ever imagine!
First let me say that I love Cisco and Linksys products. I love them so much that when I wanted to replace my old 100 BaseT switch I use for the 4 computers I work with at home I didn't think twice about buying the SD2008 switch, and so I didn't bother to see if there were any reviews written about this product. That was a mistake, as I can see now that I'm not the first one to complain about the noise of this switch.
This switch is LOUD. VERY LOUD. Louder than all of my other computers and network equipment put together by AN ORDER OF MAGNITUDE! I can't believe how loud this switch is, and am shocked to see something like this come out of Linksys. I feel this product should come with a warning label on the box, and it truly should be recalled because of this amount of noise. I'll be trying to return this thing later this week. I've seen at least one other similar Gigabit switch which has a fanless design, and that will be my criteria from now on. I've also found a web page describing how to open this switch and replace the fan with a quieter one, search Google since I don't think I can paste an URL here.
2 Other reviews are right.... this thing is LOUD
I really couldn't believe it when others noted how loud this thing was. I ordered it anyway. Unfortunately, they were right. This thing is egregiously loud. It's in my upstairs bonus room and I can hear it from my master bedroom downstairs. It's louder than all the rest of my computer equipment combined. Too bad too, because it's an attractive piece that seems to work fine and fits nicely on my desk with my Linksys router and Linksys Vonage box.
Anyone need a good switch to put in a closet?
3 great switch, but very noisy fan
I do like the performance of the switch but linksys must have gotten a real deal on some cheap used jet engines and converted them to fans. This sucker is NOISY! Way too noisy for a home or small office environment.
p.s.
I wish I could change my vote to 2 stars.
Although they answered the support line quickly, I was told that the noise of this product is as designed and it really isn't intended for a small office, but rather should live in an already noisy data center where it can just add to the din. I am going to return mine and find another brand that actually wants it's equipment to be used in a small office. Sigh...
4 Noisy fan; poor RMA service
We purchased a Linksys EG008W at the beginning of 2004; the fan was very noisy from the beginning, but workeded ok out of a remote basement closet. However, after six months, the fan failed altogether. Linksys RMA has been a disappointment--they claim they are "backordered" on replacement product. Sheesh.
Although the product seemed to work as advertised, given the noisy fan and Linksys' impossibly slow RMA and poor warranty service, cannot recommend purchasing this product. AVOID
5 A Very Good Switch
What every one has sed about it being a bad switch is all BS.
i just got mine today and iv put it to hard work and push it to its limits and its ran perfectly.
"When my daughter touched it at my direction she received first degree burns on her fingers" that is such a big lie, 1. if it got that hot the plastic case would have melted 2. it would not have past the UL test
"warning, this is loud" its not that loud at all, heck my laptop is louder than this switch.
the speed is amazing, i copy a 1.7gb file from one computer to the other in 40sec vs 10min on a 100mbps network as long as u have gigabit NICs
6 Junk
In a nutshell:
2 units - 2 broken fans within a month - and these things can cook eggs while the fan is running. I want to replace the fan with something better than the crap they have, but they force me to RMA it since it's snapped together... not screwed. Which sucks because I wouldn't mind replacing this cheap crap-fan with something quieter & better quality.
7 Replacement fan?
Yes, I can agree to people already mentioning THE NOISE this device produces. It was so unusual to hear such a loud sound from LinkSys product. I have several different LinkSys devices and all are quiet. This one is not. Beware! It is louder than most computers are nowadays. LinkSys - oh no, CISCO as now owner of LinkSys should be ashamed. EG008W is intended for HOME use, isn't it? Not for noisy server room but for our sweet home? Tell us how to get it less noisy. Much less! This current noise level is unacceptable (it sounds loudly as I am writing this commentary).
If anybody has found good replacement fan and/or knows procedure how to replace the noisy fan please write your advice here!
8 Noisy and dangerous!
I have been looking for a low-priced gigabit switch for some time and when I found out about this little Linksys baby I thought, "Victory is mine!" My dream of a massive home surveillance system transmitting hundreds of megabytes of video streams of my wife and kids to my control room would at last come true.
As soon as I plugged it in the noise of the fan was deafening. I literally have to shout to be heard over it. To make matters worse, it runs ultra hot. When my daughter touched it at my direction she received first degree burns on her fingers. Now I know why it has such a loud fan.
In addition, I didn't notice any speed increase with file transfers, although I tried everything, even holding it upside down while a copy was in progress (this technique works great with my DLink 10/100 switch, believe it or not). I feel ripped off and am currently dealing with Linksys to get a refund or some free products out of them. We'll see how that goes.
9 warning, this is loud
I got this installed last week and it works great. The only problem I have is that it runs pretty hot and its fan is loud. It is installed in the panel in the coat closet. With the panel door locked and coat closet closed, I can still hear the switch humming from the outside. Otherwise it works great!
