Linksys (WUSB12) USB 11MBPS Wireless Adapter
1 Item used for Tivo
I was able to use this item on my upstairs Tivo to connect to my network wireless Linksys router WRT54G (located downstairs). It took me awhile to find the gateway, but it finally connected. Now I can use multiroom viewing with my two TIVO(s) located in seperate rooms. Love it!
2 Perfect for Tivo!!!
Like other users have stated, this adapter is PERFECT for Tivo. Plug it in and Tivo recognizes and upgrades the device. So easy to use, I highly recommend it!
3 incredibly frustrating to set up on XP
Linksys normally puts out a great product, but I have had nothing but grief with this one. You need the patience of a Shaolin monk to successfully configure this device if you already have other wifi devices on your network. All of my other wireless products are linksys also. I should be able to simply connect the device to a usb port, load the driver, and viola! Right? Wrong! Setting up this device on my desktop interfered with my pcmcia wifi g card on my laptop. Also, if you want to place your tower underneath your desk, the USB cable provided is woefully short. I'd suggest getting at least a 2 ft USB cable so that you can mount this device on top of your desk. Also, the signal is pretty weak. Therefore, I don't suggest using this product if there is going to be any kind of physical obstruction between the device and your access point. One of the biggest draws for me to buying this product is the portability. The thought of having a portable usb wifi device was intriguing. It even comes with a lanyard so that you can wear it if you wish. However, as this device requires tweaking to get it to work properly, it is not truly plug and play . I cannot in good conscience recommend this product.
4 Painless and quick
Absolutely painless install on my TiVo. The TiVo box even detected that this adaptor needed a firmware upgrade and then did the upgrade for me. Took less than 5 minutes to install and works great!
5 Excellent for TiVo
I was able to network my TiVo to my home (wired and wireless) network within five minutes of opening this adapter. TiVo recognized, updated and configured the adapter without a glitch. It has worked flawlessly since installation--the connection to my network is always excellent. I'm quite happy with this device.
6 Execellent
I bought a new Gateway desktop computer. I already have linksys wireless router. With WUSB12, my new computer connected to the internet easily. Takes me less than 5 minutes to install. Excellent product. I will buy more from linksys.
7 Works great...
I recently reviewed the Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless routing gateway which is a great product. This review covers the wireless adapter that allows any device to recieve network access via the thin air.

Features:

WEP support -- A basic encryption protocol that can be broken if a cracker has the time and horsepower to do it, but for most home networks perfectly acceptable to keep your network happeings away from casually prying eyes.

Small unobtrusive design -- comes with a convenient pen clip and necklace for carrying around if you are on the road. I will use this a great deal as my laptop is my mobile business.

USB Interface/extension cable -- A convenient USB interface (1.1) is provided, more than fast enough for pretty much any use.

Installation:

The software installation varies with the OS you have running but is next to seamless either way. (I installed it on XP and win2000 without a hitch) On my network I use a unique SSID, WEP encryption and MAC restrictions on the router to make sure that the connnection is as secure as possible. Depending on weather or not you are using these features you may have different steps to take for attaching to the network. I had to install all three but after doing so I was able to connect to the WLAN without issue. Using the laptop 3 meters away reported "excellent" signal strength, moving it 2 floors up reported "very good" with no noticeable reduction in speed outstanding. The link has stayed strong without any drop out's but it's only been a few days. I configured another machine to use the adapter on the second floor, set it up to print wirelessly to the print server on my wired network and configured internet access in a few minutes.

Summary -- The device does what it is supposed to as far as I can see and does it without drop outs. A good example, I was able to wirelessly play mp3's on the laptop from a wired machine while my girlfriend used the laptop to wirelessly surf the web and watch videos from launch.com allwithout any hickups or apparent reduction in speed. Makes me wish I got into Wi-fi a bit sooner! All in all a great adapter for your WLAN, highly recommended.

8 Holy Moly, it was easy to setup........
It was very easey to set up and use. First I allowed the MAC address in the Linksys 802.11g router. Then I plugged it into my laptop, installed the software. I set up the SSID and 128-bit WEP and off I was surfing from my living room. I get pretty good speeds from about 50 ft from router. Decent speeds about 150 ft from router as well.

I would buy another and recommend it. I read in a previous review that it gets hot to touch. I have not experienced this, even after 8-9 hours of use.

9 Easy Wireless Networking
This adapter is a very handy device. It's simple to set up and very easy to install. A great way to avoid opening up your computer case. Just plug it into a USB port, pop up the antenna, and load the software.

This adapter is designed for use with a wireless router, such as the Linksys Wireless B Broadband Router I use. The cable modem plugs into the router and then the router broadcasts the cable signal throughout my apartment, making it simple for my several wireless enabled devices to pick up the Internet and get email.

This is a terrific, no-hassle device for a good price.

10 TIVO users rejoice!!
This little beauty is the real deal. No more 100 foot telephone cords snaking through your living room. Pop this little baby into the back of your TIVO, follow the instructions on the screen, and you are set!

The instructions that come with this adapter are for use with a laptop or desktop, they do not apply if you are installing this on a TIVO. Go to your TIVO menu, plug in the adapter and follow the instructions on the screen.

I was able to get this adapter up and running in less than 5 minutes. My TIVO automatically told me I had to update my firmware (it also told me how to do it). Then I just entered my closed network SSID and it was up and running. Beautiful!!

11 Tivo users cut your phone cord!
Bought this device to connect Tivo and my Apple Airport and it works wonderfully. Installation took about 15 minutes and there were no complications. True plug and play.
12 Save on adapters, save on screwdriver time.
I spotted the WUSB12 on LinkSys website prior to its general availability which was about a month after I had gotten a Linksys Wireless G router. I had an immediate need for one and got it as soon as I could.

Its a little bigger than I had imagined from the picture but still very compact. Absolutely a time saver over installing hardware about the same effort as PCMCIA adapaters.

I use it daily to quickly enable old Win 98 desktops I have for wireless when I need them to be networked. Since I don't need to have them all active at once I saved on the cost of permanent hardware (PCI or other) and the small size makes it easy to deal with (versus other USB wireless adapters).

Installation was a snap, software easy to install. I have used it with Win2k, Win9a and XP systems. The extension cable is a must and makes use with rear USB slots on desktops much easier. The built in antenna is not always necessary but at a distance from the router I did find it very helpful. This is another place the extension cable comes in handy as you can orient the entire adapter to the optimum location for transmission.

The only issue I have had relates to the antenna when I've used the adapter on laptops. Some laptops have the USB port inverted from the normal position this mean that the antenna ends up pointing down. If the computer is actually on your lap its probably okay but on a tabletop the antenna just can't open.

All in all a great product. I'll be getting another one shortly.

13 Works Great with Tivo
I initially purchased the Linksys WUSB-11 v2.8 from Amazon but found out that my Tivo Series2 did not support the 2.8 version, only 2.6 (Tivo now has a beta upgrade that will support v2.8). I had heard of signal strength problems with the WUSB-12 so I was hesitant. I went out and tried it anyway and it works perfectly. Tivo recognized it immediately and installed a firmware upgrade automatically. I get 70% signal strength, my access point is in my office and the Tivo is in the living room.
14 No power issues for me
Unlike Dan, my Tivo loves this adapter and reports 76% signal strength to my access point, which is located on another floor of my house.

Configuration of the adapter using the Tivo software was amazingly easy. Tivo even had a firmware upgrade for the adapter stored on my local box, which it applied automatically. No more phone line for me. Anyone want to buy half a dozen phones? :-)

cheers,
Steve

15 TiVo loves it!
I bought this specifically to connect my TiVo to my wirless LAN. Worked like a charm. Plugged it it. TiVo recognized it. Upgraded the firmware. Found the network and runs like a charm.
16 Couldn't get it to work and neither could Linksys
Another waste of time beta testing hardware. Tried this on a Sony laptop running Win2K. Software installed without a problem then the WUSB12 installed without a problem. Unfortunately, the software doesn't recognize the adapter and the adapter can't be configured to work without it. Linksys tech support was clueless so it back it went. Next...
17 Just hooked up my TiVo.. Whoot!
Wow! So easy. So nice. So simple. I am using the Home Media Option for my TiVo and I bought this to connect up to my network. I plugged it in. Tivo detected it. I changed my wireless settings in Setup and I was connected to my network within 5 minutes.
18 No problems.
I really like it. I have several versions of Linksys wireless adapters for various computers. All work great, but this is the easiest to use, since it is USB.
19 Super Dreamy
I didn't have to do a damned thing but plug this baby into my TIVO and it started working. Super dreamy.
20 Brilliant concept, Terrible performance
I thought this product was a brilliant concept - the form factor is great. No wall-wart power supply, etc. However, the performance is terrible. I've used almost every Linksys wireless product with the BEFW11S4 - the PCMCIA card (WPC11), the Wireless Bridge (WET11), and this one. The other products perform much better.

I bought two of these for two home machines. They both struggled with reception (only about 30 feet away, through a couple of walls), getting 0 to 20% signal strength, averaging probably 8%. It would drop out completely for a while at times. This is WITH the linksys signal booster on top of the BEFW11S4.

With the machines in the exact same place I hooked up a WET11 bridge instead. I get 80% signal strength or better, and no dropped connections. It is much faster, presumably because of less error and retries.

I am returning both of these and using either WET11s on my machines, or trying the WUSB11 adapter, which has an antenna. Hopefully that one performs better. The form factor is not as good and it requires power, but at least it should work well.

21 Wirless USB for Tivo2
I bought this little guy to use with a Tivo2. Plugged it in and it was recognized right away. Very small form factor, and "cool" design. I notice I get only mid-level reception using it - but I attribute that to the placement of the device (on the floor in a closed TV stand)
22 Worked
Rather anticlimatic. Installed drivers and I was up and running.
23 Drops connection from time to time w. WinME?
(Updated/revised 2/24/2004). I bought this product for use at home with the Linksys WRT54G wireless AP/router, and for use on the road with various hotspots. The installation and configuration were very easy, and at home I get close to 100% signal strength (albeit its only going through a single wall). I had no problem configuring the two devices to match and interface.

Plugged into a WinME PC, the connection drops frequently, and it requires a reboot of the PC to restore it (even with the latest firmware and drivers on the WUSB12, the WRT54G, and WinME). Killing and restarting the WUSB12 utility on the PC doesn't reconnect, nor does unplugging/replugging the WUSB12, it seems to require a PC reboot, hence I suspect the problem is with WinME or perhaps that PC's USB support.

Plugged into a Win2K laptop, and used with various hotspots (Borders, Starbucks, Kinkos, Holiday Inn), the product however works great, no lost connections unlike above. Its a very nice package and form factor for carrying in the laptop bag, although signal strength in those locations is usually a little poor.

The WUSB12 seems to run quite hot, I'm surprised it gets as warm as it does, almost uncomfortable to hold in your hand, not that you normally would ....

24 It's small and it works
I like this adapter for my wireless network. It's small, and it can attach directly to a USB port or use the included USB extension, if space don't permit. I've had a problem with PC Card-based adapters, and this is an improvement over other USB adapters, because you don't have to use the included cable.

It's also great for travelling, because it can fit in a shirt pocket with the clip on the cap if you're looking for hot spots.

25 Got a bad one....
I bought this adapter to work with other Linksys wireless products. The range is much worse than the WUSB11, love that product. I tried installing it on Windows 2000 and worked with support for near 2 hours and they still could not get it to see the Internet. It could ping the router and the DNS server but could not ping yahoo.com nor see the internet. The support people were not very polite nor customer oriented on this one, I called at midnight on sunday so maybe that had something to do with it.

My experience with Linksys support suggests that they will want to blame the hardware as fast as possible. This is good for customers and returns but horrible for the company. I really like my networks that I used Linksys for but I would prefer better support and website driver download.

26 Only if you need the form factor
The industrial design on this product is great! Compact design, and a slick folding antenna.

The driver/software support is horrible. It took me 2 days to get it working with a Sony VAIO. The software install disk failed and I had to manually install the drivers and the documentation provided was poor and didn't cover all the properties settings for the drivers.

The worst problem is that Linksys claims this product is "hot swappable" which is a half-truth. You can plug it in and it will activate, but if you unplug it, then plug it in again, it will not reactivate. If you check the Linksys support FAQ, they admit "You may require a reboot after unplugging the device". Hardly "hot swappable"...

27 Totally sweet!
I have a wired & wireless 802.11b Linksys network, which has been working well for some time (and now works even better since the addition of a Linksys Wireless Signal Booster).
Recently I became a Beta tester for Tivo's new home network (which I'll review +++ once the NDA expires), so my Tivo-2 needed to access the network via its now-active USB ports. I bought this WUSB12, took it out of the box, plugged it into the Tivo, and I was done. Turning on the Tivo, I went to setup and found it had already recognized the network. I selected the network as my connection choice, it tested the connection and then executed an entire day's download in about 15 seconds. Wow.
The device itself is slick, looking like some kind of big Sharpie. Sliding off the pen-clip cover exposes the business end of this USB device, and also allows access to the release button for the little antenna. There are 2 lights in the base, one for power and one for link detection. The package includes a little USB cable (if you need one) and a lanyard to carry this thing around your neck (not me). I did install the software, which was painless and in my case (network is not password protected) not really necessary. I predict this is going to be a very successful product as more and more wireless networks are deployed in public places like schools, libraries, malls and coffee houses.
28 Excellent range - nice form factor
Sometimes I get burnt by adopting new technology before its well tested, but in this case I feel like I made a good choice. Windows XP detected the card right away, asked me for my drivers, next my 128-bit WEP code for my SSID and I was off and running around the NET! I don't know if there's Linux drivers yet, but as long as your using 98SE and above - and like being able to carry around an adapter on a keychain - this is the wireless adapter for you!

Note: I bought this since I could not surf the internet and access my removable hard drive at the same time. I was unable to use my usb 2.0 pc card together with my dell truemobile 1150 wireless pc card adapter. I own a laptop with one PCMCIA slot.

Most of what I really need to know about how to live, and what to do,
and how to be, I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the
graduate school mountain but there in the sandbox at nursery school.
These are the things I learned: Share everything. Play fair. Don't
hit people. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess.
Don't take things that aren't yours. Say you're sorry when you hurt someone.
Wash your hands before you eat. Flush. Warm cookies and cold milk are good
for you. Live a balanced life. Learn some and think some and draw and paint
and sing and dance and play and work some every day.
Take a nap every afternoon. When you go out into the world, watch for
traffic, hold hands, and stick together. Be aware of wonder. Remember the
little seed in the plastic cup. The roots go down and the plant goes up and
nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that. Goldfish and
hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the plastic cup -- they all
die. So do we.
And then remember the book about Dick and Jane and the first word you
learned, the biggest word of all: LOOK. Everything you need to know is in
there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation. Ecology and
politics and sane living.
Think of what a better world it would be if we all -- the whole world
-- had cookies and milk about 3 o'clock every afternoon and then lay down with
our blankets for a nap. Or if we had a basic policy in our nation and other
nations to always put things back where we found them and cleaned up our own
messes. And it is still true, no matter how old you are, when you go out into
the world it is best to hold hands and stick together.
-- Robert Fulghum, "All I ever really needed to know I learned
in kindergarten"
