Logitech MX 510 Performance Optical Gaming Mouse - Red

Logitech has raised the bar on mouse precision, performance, and beauty... again! The Logitech MX510 features an improved version of our already-amazi
1 Not-So-Good for FPS Gaming ...
I purchase this mouse based on reviews and advertising from Logitech that this mouse was specifically designed for gaming. I agree that the optics seem to be more responsive and accurate, however ... the buttons are not designed to take the intense clicking needed for First Person Shooter games. Particularly the left button fails quickly (for me ... within 45 days of use, and I am already on my second, going on third mouse!) Logitech stands behind their warranty and replaces, but it is a pain to get my MX510 replaced every 45 days!! Bottom line: The left and right buttons do not hold up at all! Logitech needs to redesign and toughen these buttons to stand up to their claim that this mouse is made for "gaming"
2 Excellent mouse, even okay for small hands (at least mine).
I don't consider myself hard to please. I don't have any particular needs from a mouse as I don't game. I basically require a mouse to be reliable and usable. A perk is a mouse that doesn't hurt me after long hours of use (because I spend most of my waking hours on a computer).

I own a fairly common/popular basic Logitech optical mouse that is now rather old (the scroll wheel is less responsive and the buttons aren't as springy). I now carry it with my laptop, so I kept an eye out for a replacement.

Things I like about this mouse:

1. Great buttons in what I think are in appropriate (and convenient) locations.

At work we use Microsoft scrolling optical mouses/mice. They have buttons that allow the user to navigate backwards or forwards in internet browsers and honstly the feature became very convenient. I started to miss those buttons while at home with my own mouse, so the feature made my list of desired options.

The two buttons for scrolling are also extremely useful, I think. It provides the functionality of clicking the scrollbar without having to move the cursor to the scrollbar. I haven't yet figured out the third button depicting two windows (don't care/need to find out yet).

2. This mouse is actually manageable for my small hands even though it is not a particularly small mouse. It could be smaller for me, but the ergonomic shape helps a lot. Particularly nice b/c of chronic wrist pain.

I have fairly small hands and the Microsoft mice are basically too large for me. When I use a mouse I find myself lifting it to reposition frequently. This eventually (and reliably) causes pain in my wrist when the mouse is harder to hold and lift. So basically size and shape matter. It is a common Human Factors issue, so Microsoft should address the problem better (at all), but anyway, this Logitech mouse does work for me.

3. Details, such as the logo, and the way the screws are covered yet left accessible by labels that just have slits in them. These design touches appeal to me.

I have to say that before buying this mouse I was basically worried about the size. A friend of mine has a wireless mouse in the same shape, though, and after using that a bit I decided it wouldn't be much of a problem if at all. It's turned out to work fairly well.

Only reason I don't give the mouse a full 5 is because it is still a tiny bit large, something that can be changed/improved.
3 Best mouse I have bought so far
The MX510 is a great mouse for gamers and normal PC users. Fit fit for me was great and after egttign attuned to the mouse I woulg never go back to the other very good Logitech cordless mouse I had been using. That took three days or so of regular use as my muscle memory got used to the new buttons and having a corded mouse again.

The control and feel of the MX510 is good and it really does make a difference in games. The buttons are well placed and all are very useful (page back, page forward, change window, scroll up, scroll down, etc.). It is well cbuilt and the rubber surface along the edges really makes for a good feel while the pearlized buttons and top look nice (I chose the blue, but the red is swank also). The fact that it is IR as opposed to a ball makes this a perfect replacement if you have not made this leap yet.

For sub 30 dollars this mouse is well worth the price. It would have been nice if it were cordless as it has a much better feel than the models higher up in this line that are. Of course there are no batteries or charging to worry about either.

Buy it and don;t look back.
4 Excellent Mouse with many custom buttons
This is a great mouse, for gamer or regular computer user (like me). It features excellent tracking, great ergonomic design, easy to use buttons and good software.

I'm comparing this with Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer SE, which i purchased just a month prior to this month, but returned.

Ergonomic design - the nod goes to Logitech. The MS mouse is little too tall, and it dug extremely uncomfortably into the middle of my palm.

Wheel operation - the nod here goes to MS. The wheel on Microsoft's explorer mouse is a marvel of modern technology - it's extremely smooth, and if were not for the bad ergonomic design, I'd kept the MS mouse.

Tracking - the nod goes to Logitech. It features excellent tracking and smooth mouse movement.

Button location - nod goes to Logitech - the buttons layout is excellent

Number of buttons - the nod goes to Logitech - it features 8 buttons and they're all reconfigurable! I like to have an F5 button, a back/forward button, an F3 button and a close program button -- at the tip of my fingers, and this mouse does it all!

Overall, it's excellent, 5 stars!

5 Perfect For Gaming
I play Counter-Strike, and I had heard a lot of positive feedback on this mouse, so I bought it last month. The accuracy (as long as you can utilizie it) is amazing, it moves across my surface with ease, allowing me less time worrying about getting to my target and more on aiming. I highly suggest this to anyone who games.
6 very smooth tracking but extremely uncomfortable to use
this is overall a good mouse with extremely smooth tracking and will be a superb one for those with big hands, not even medium hands would fit this mouse. it's really really bulky and hard to control. i usually play shooting and strategy games that requires a lot of movements and vivaciousness in my mouse and this one totally contradicts that. its also pretty heavy that makes web surfing difficult. therefore, im plannin on returning it to amazon.com and decided to get the mx310 because it fits my hand well and weighs less, the only thing i regret is giving up the 2 very handy back and forward buttons that the mx510 has.
7 Great mouse for gaming
I heard of the performance of this mouse through word-of-mouth. I had been barely surviving with some cheap generic mouse. This mouse, however, is phenomenal. It's solid, it's accurate, and it fits very well in my hand. I like how the buttons are formed into the design, they respond perfectly. The "back" and "forward" buttons are used all the time, plus they can be bound in games for two extra buttons. I've had no problems with the cruise control buttons, or the scroll wheel.

It's worth the extra money. I play Counter-Strike all the time, and after a few minutes of getting used to the extra sensitivity, my game has improved dramatically.
8 Great Mouse, Bad Drivers
I got this as a gift for Christmas, and the mouse itself is quite impressive. It's tracking is superb, even on polished surfaces. The ergonomics are great, and the glossy finish feels really nice as well as making the mouse easier to clean. The extra buttons (above and below the scroll wheel) are a little difficult to press, but I think it may just take more getting used to.

The problem with the package is Logitech's horrible "Mouseware" drivers. They are buggy, hard to configure, and have a horrible GUI. I had problems with acceleration turning off/on in games, which is really hard to deal with. I reverted back to Microsoft's Intellipoint drivers, which work MUCH better than Logitech's, but unfortunately they don't let you customize the 6th and 7th button (since no Microsoft mouse has 7 buttons).
9 Excellent mouse, with one engineering flaw...
Be aware that these mice -- along with many other cord-based Logitech mice -- emit a high-pitch noise, similar to that of a television or CRT monitor. The part which is emitting this noise is the receptor used for detecting scroll wheel movement, not the optical eye.

Logitech managers have denied there is any problem, even though their Technical Support/RMA department agrees to replacing the mice at your request (which gains you nothing -- the replacement will do the same).

If you are sensitive to high-frequency noises, you may want to consider a different brand of mouse, as you will hear a constant high-pitch frequency while the mouse is plugged in.

If you think this review is silly or outrageous, I recommend you look on Google and on the Anandtech forums for "Logitech noise". You'll find that many others are reporting the same problem. Otherwise, try placing your ear fairly close to the front end of the mouse (where the scroll wheel is) -- you'll hear what I mean.

Logitech, please consider using different set of receptors for your scroll wheel detection. Microsoft, Mitsumi, and Kensington mice do not have this problem.
10 Comfortable, Fast, but fragile
I purchased my first MX510 (blue) in August of 04. It is very comfortable, very accurate (good for photo editing) and very fast. The only complaint I have is that is does not hold up very well. The primary button started to act up around December 2004. I called Logitech and they sent a replacement.(Excellent Customer Support) However the replacement (new not refurbished) has only lasted for a couple months before exhibiting the same problems as the first one. Yes I downloaded the latest driver, tried it on another PC, all with the same result. The primary button begins to fail which causes it to not "hold" when trying to drag and drop and it will click multiple times on a single press. I must give BIG KUDOS to Logitech as they are sending ANOTHER replacement. I admit I do play a LOT of FPS games, but this mouse is a GAMEING mouse and should be able to handle that type of use. I suggested a slight and very simple re-design of putting a stop between the outer button and the actual micro switch that would prevent the "bottoming out" of the micro switch that intense "shooting" may cause. Overall it is still the best mouse I have owned and I highly recomend it. Just try and go easy on the "trigger"!
11 Great Mouse -- Highly Recommended
The mouse is great. The cruise scrolling is an excellent feature. I had to return my first mouse due to a scroll wheel problem, and Logitech shipped me a new mouse with no problems. Very satisfied. I also bought the fUnc sUrface 1030 mouse pad to go along with this mouse and recommend it as well. By the way, I'm a professional computer programmer and spend hours a day on the computer.
12 Great hardware, ho-hum software
I am not a gamer, but spend many hours every day in front of the computer. The Logitech mouse is beautiful, functional, comfortable. Microsoft screwed up with their latest clunky, huge and hugely uncomfortable optical mouse offering. The Logitech 510 fits in the hand and is a delight to operate. BUT I spend a lot of time flicking between different applications and the MS mouse has application specific button allocations eg on some programs you want a button to activate "close window", but on another program you want the same button to be "escape". You can do that easily with the MS mouse, but not at all with the Logitech mouse. Don't let the game tuned hardware sticker fool you - that is just a way that the registry can remember orientations and acceleration parameters, not button allocation. I wished I had known this before buying - Not sure it would have changed my mind, there just aren't that many options when it comes to multi-button, optical corded mice, but it's certainly a shame. The good news is that any keystroke (include CTRL + ALT combinations) are allocatable to any button and there are plenty of 'em. Final annoyance is the spam software that gets packaged with the driver install. I want a mouse. I do not want (although I was offered it during various pop ups during the install) a shortcut to ebay, a media center player, a subscription to a game arcade or the possibility for Logitech to send me messages from "trusted parties" through their desktop alert system. This is like seeing ads before the movie, I have just paid to be spammed at, and I don't appreciate that at all. Poor show.
13 The Best
I am a hardcore gamer. I sometimes play games 12 hours at a time. This mouse is excellent for gaming, I have big hands and it fits perfect. It is also beautiful to look at. I use a Func Surface Mouse Pad and usually use teflon tape on my mouse feet. This mouse feels so good I haven't even put any on yet.

I like the feet, they are very small and there are 5 instead of the usual 4 for extra smooth sliding. The fact that they are so small will save on the expensive teflon feet tape too :)

The mouse is very light, I really cannot find anything bad to say about it. The only thing in question in my book is how long it will last and it seems built well so I expect to be happy a while :) Highly recommended.
14 MX 510 = killing machine
I ordered this mouse because I still had an ancient ball-mouse and this was giving me problems. My hand started to feel bad after one hour of use and I simply couldn't win a match in Half Life against my cousin.

After buying this mouse, not only did it solve the problem with my hand, as it is big and just matches the size of it and just feels good, but it also gave me more kills at Half Life, although I still can't win over my cousin hehe. But he asked me: "what did you do to play better from one day to the other?".

I'm keeping the secret.
15 An excellent mouse! Great performance!
Logitech really do a good job on MX510. The performance of the mouse is excellent. It's very precise. It's great for people who like to play games and design graphics. Moreover, the mouse has a very good design. It's very comfortable. All five additional keys are extremely useful and save you a lot of time to movie the mouse to the back button or task bar.

I have tried different type and brand of mouses. Logitech mouse is the best. It's a lot better than Microsoft mouse especially on functionality and comfortableness. However, this mouse is designed for right hand people. It might not fit for you if you are left hander.

If you haven't tried this, you should try it. You won't regret this.
16 Gaming Performance Mouse
After going through several ball mice and a few optical mice, all made by the biggies MS and Logitech.
I found the perfect gaming mouse in the MX 500. The curser
is true to my hand movement, and the buttons program easily.
Binding the buttons to game interactive tasks like jump, fire, crouch and the sort is very straight forward. This mouse gets my vote for any gamer on your Christmas list.
Not to be reserved for fun and games, it is comfortable and accurate for all users.
17 Hands-down, the best mouse I've ever used
I bought this after my old optical mouse (a free-after-rebate no-name item I got less than a year ago) was on the fritz. I use this at home, where my computer set-up is less-than-perfect since I don't spend as much time using it as I do my office computer, so with the old mouse, I could feel the onset of carpal tunnel after any intensive mouse sessions (for example, selective color correction of photos in Photoshop). However, with the MX510, I've used it for hours on end with no fatigue at all.

The placement of the back/forward buttons is great. I had a Kensington 5-button mouse at work where extra buttons were located at the base of the mouse on both sides, and I was always clicking those by accident. I was not particularly fond of the "cruise control" effect, so I mapped those buttons to Page Up and Page Down. An earlier reviewer stated he had a lot of trouble getting to the Program Swithcer button because he had to "crinch your middle finger up to hit it" but I mouse with my index finger on the wheel, so I never have a problem getting to it. In fact, I hit it a lot when I actually mean to Page Down. Other reviewers have had complained about the stiffness of the wheel, but I find it easy to use.

I ordered mine on November 11, 2004, and the CD came with the latest Mouseware drivers (9.80 as of this writing). My only complaint with them is that I can't map the buttons to do different things in different applications. For example, back/forward are only useful while web browsing. Is there some reason I can't make them do something else when I'm not using a browser?
18 I'm happy with this mouse
Pros:

1. Accurate and responsive pointing.
2. Ideal weight & size(not too heavy when compared with MX700, not too light when compared with Logitech blue)

Cons:

1. No significant improvement in pointing accuracy compared with MX500 ( although Logitech claimed that MX510 was much better)
2. The design of five additional buttions is a joke. The foreward/backward buttons are too high to touch, even worse, the page down button and task switch button are simply unusable due to incorrect button locations.
3. Mouse driver from Logitech doesn't support Windows Server 2003.

To me, the ideal mouse should adpot the body of MS IntelliMouse 4.0 (remove the tilt wheel), use the optical sensor from this MX510, and use the wide scroll wheel from MS wireless optical mouse (none-tilt version).

19 MX510, an excellent choice for the price
I've always used ball mouses up to now. Optical mouses never had the traction I wanted. However, the MX510 has totally changed that. It is fits nicely into the palm of your hand for righties. The look is great and the ergonomics is awesome. Snatch it up before the mail in rebate expires.
20 Very nice - I'm a happy customer, except the shipping time.
The reviews were right on the money on this mouse. I justified the upgrade to myself easily in that it's one of those items that I use often; it's a great product. The replacement was an up-scale optical mouse from the only 'other' main competition, so I'm not comparing this to an old ball mouse either.

I got it for gaming primarily, but I can notice the difference with navigating through other less intensive apps... but the main plus for me was noticed playing FPS games - and that's where you'll notice a much improvement in performance. Great product. However, I have one gripe: shipping took a full two weeks... UPS tried to deliver during lunch time when the office was closed, and they didn't even try to deliver the next day...their second attempt on the third day. That was a bit disappointing as I've come to expect better from Amazon. So I take one star away for that... no wonder DHL is gaining ground on UPS. Amazon was slow to ship and UPS took their time as well it seems.
21 Works perfect on Mac OX 10.3.6, including all buttons
Bar none, the best mouse I ever owned. We run a total Macintosh office, and even with the latest 10.3.6, this mouse and its Logitech software are flawless. I have the two best ExposŽ features (tile all windows, and clear screen) put to two of the buttons. In Safari, I have two other buttons for the back and forward functions. The optical laser is very smooth. I paid well over the fifty original retail for this thing, so at this price, you gotta get it.

By the way, I was using cordless mice before this (Intellimouse and the Logitech cordless). After using this, I can say that I much prefer a corded mouse, especially once they make one this smooth.
22 For people who runs Windows 2003 Server...
I didn't know Logitech "officially" didn't support windows 2003 server until I received it and try to install mouseware.
But... they don't.
Since it runs perfectly well on windows2000 and XP, and I didn't want to change back to XP, I thought mouseware should work in 2003. Logitech just blocked us from installing it.
So, here's a little trick. right click on mouseware.exe, and go to property -> compatibility.
check "Run this program in compatibility for"
and select windows XP.
and then double click the program.
now it should install flowlessly, and you can assign to any button for whatever the function you want.
BTW, mouse itself is amazing. I was using MS intelli explorer 3.0. and I thought if any mouse has better resolution than mine, I wouldn't feel the difference because mine was already too good. I thought human can't sense that preciseness.
but I feel the difference.
It's different.
23 Overall, a mouse you'll be proud to place on your desk
I ordered this mouse from Amazon.com last week and it arrived the day after it shipped along with another item. They just keep getting faster and faster! Now, about the product itself. I am very picky on mice and, since I've never owned a Logitech mouse of my own, was really hesitant to purchase this model. I was really spoiled by my Intellimouse Explorer optical (one of the earliest models) and wasn't looking forward to upgrading, but since the mouse was dying I had no choice. The current generation of Intellimouse Explorers weren't getting such rave reviews and I also wasn't ready to jump into wireless mice just yet, since I feel the technology there isn't advanced enough for daily gaming (though, in the case of the MX1000, I could be wrong)

After weighing this mouse (the red version, the blue was more expensive for some reason) against the MX1000, the price difference and incredible reviews won me over, so I bought the MX510. After nearly a week's worth of use, here are my impressions.

1. The MX510 is both easier to move and more accurate than my previous mouse. It moves effortlessly around the screen and my hand never gets fatigued. This mouse is not only suited for gaming, but excellent for any task that requires LOTS of mouse activity, like graphics editing for example.

2. I actually thought I would never use the two cruise control buttons, but I find them very useful. It is true that the top cruise control button is high up, and you may need to reach a bit further to get to it, but with my hands (which aren't all that large) I don't find it problematic at all.

3. The Quick Switch Program Selector is nice, but I find ALT+TAB to be faster. However, like all buttons on this mouse, the MouseWare drivers from Logitech allow you to map this button to just about any task you like, so if you don't want to use the default setting I'm sure you could think of a more useful action for this button.

4. Forward and Back buttons are easier to reach and click easier than my old Intellimouse.

5. Unlike some people here, I found the sculpt of this mouse to be very form-fitting to my hand (if you're right handed!) I believe the people having problems with that are those with either really large or really small hands, and thus can't be helped.

6. The only cavet I've found is the scroll wheel, which does not scroll quite as smoothly nor click quite as easily as my previous mouse. I'm hoping that, as time wears on, it will get "worn in" and function more to my liking. It works fine, just takes more effort. I can live with it.

I would recommend this mouse to anyone looking for a high-performance, comfortable mouse. This is probably the best non-cordless model being produced today. Great job Logitech!

P.S. be sure to get the latest MouseWare drivers from logitech.com, the ones on the CD are outdated. As of this writing the latest are 9.80.
24 Plug and Play Simplicity + Ergo!
Best mouse I've ever owned so far. After owning several no-name and one Microsoft optical mice, I finally made the plunge and got the best wired mouse of the bunch. The feel of the MX510 is more substantial than any other mouse I've ever tried, more on par with its cordless cousins, the MX700 and MX1000. The mouse feels very comfortable on your hand (provided you're right-handed). It is very responsive and has excellent tracking ability due to its 5.8 megapixels/second, 800-dpi optical engine.

After reading several bad comments about its lackluster software, I decided to skip it and just plugged the mouse in via the USB connector (a PS/2 adapter is also provided). Other than the program switcher button, all the other buttons work flawlessly under XP's default mouse driver. The forward and backward thumb buttons are a joy to use when browsing the Web. The page-scroll buttons on the top and bottom of the scrollwheel enable easy scrolling of long documents.

Overall, the MX510 is a well-designed pointing device. If you need an excellent wired optical mouse, you can't go wrong with the MX510. And at less than 30-dollars, it's practically a steal.
25 GREAT MOUSE!
I hate optical mouses. I can honestly say that I prefer ball mouses to optical ones anytime of the day...that is until I played with one of these. Why did I buy it? Because if you're a frequent gamer, you need to know what works and if you check out any professional counterstrike (it's a first person shoot 'em up gate) teams, their members, the majority of them, use THIS MOUSE. So I snagged one just to try it out...WOW. The feel of the optical lag is NONEXISTENT. The movements of the mouse is 99.99998% similiar to that of a ball mouse except for a few things...no cleaning and no rattling sound of the ball. I can't describe how much I recommend this mouse...sure it seems extraneous to buy a mouse that costs anything more than 5 bucks...but believe me, I bought it and I seriously have no buyer's remorse at all. It's THAT GOOD. The main emphasis once again is the feel of the mouse...not necessarily the contours since that depends on a person's preference, however, the actual movements of the mouse is beyond words superb. This is one of those things that you didn't know you needed or you werent sure about getting because of the price but once you got it, you realized how 1) you needed it 2) it was worth it. EXTREMELY RECOMMENDED FOR GAMERS
26 Good Mouse
Issues:

1) Customization of buttons is questionable. You can't bind some in games, mainly the program switcher and sometimes the scroll up and down buttons on opposite ends of the wheel.

2) The software Logitech provides is poor. Instead of something similar to Microsoft's mouseware, Logitech appears only to give drivers and not custom software to litterally make your mouse do tricks. As such, button binding is not avaliable for all buttons in many programs.

3) The famed program switch button is incredibly difficult to get to. You litterally have to crinch your middle finger up to hit it, raising all of your fingers as well. Also, for some reason, I does not appear to function with many programs, meaning it does nothing.

The Good:
1) Ergonomic, your hand won't get tired at all, (except if you use the program switch button, which is located in the center of the top of the mouse). The foward and back buttons are easily in reach, and do not get in the way due to the thumb impression in the mouse's design.

2) It is very percise, perhaps, too percise at times. For games, it responds well, especially shooters. Haven't had a hardware issue with games yet.

3) The holographic part is pretty cool, and the lack of texture makes cleaning a breeze.

EDIT: The application switcher does work if you install the software from the logitech site. The CD they package doesn't do anything except provide simple drivers. Download the mouseware from the site to actually be able to use most of the buttons. There is a review saying that you are able to bind the mouse to Winamp but currently there is no way way to do it, since the software from the site does not allow you to add programs. If you install the CD first, the software from the site will not install until you uninstall the CD first.

Overall, the mouse is worthy of the awards, and for some reason is a good $20 cheaper then the same model in blue. The 8 button custom function appeal is a overstated, but the mouse is still worth every penny. Basically a great mouse with REALLY Sub par software
27 The "BEST" gaming mouse
This mouse has an 800dpi optical sensor that surpasses all others, especially the popular MS optical mice. If you want a top performing mouse, buy this one. We are avid online gamers and this is the one we chose. The recent price drop (originally it sold for $45-50) to around $30 makes it a "must-have" item. It is top-rated in Computer Shopper Nov 2004 issue, p. 108, and PC magazine rated it tops a few months before.
28 Solid High Performance Mouse..
I bought a red MX-510 earlier this year from Best Buy for $40.00 plus tax; about $12 more than what Amazon is charging for them now. It's an excellent mouse for just about everything from just basic net surfing and especially FPS games. I'm impressed with how smooth and accurate it really is.

I recently bought a wireless MX 1000 laser mouse. I honestly can't tell any difference performance wise between the MX 510 optical and the MX 1000 Laser mouse with the exception of the cordless MX 1000 is heavier and molds to my hand slightly better. The MX 510 is a solid high performance mouse at about half the cost of MX 1000.
29 Better than the MX1000
The MX510 is as comfortable and accurate as the newer MX1000, yet less than half the price. In fact it might be better a mouse: the mousewheel is much easier to click, the unit is less heavy, it uses the stable and proven Mouseware drivers, and the left/right buttons have a much lighter (but still crisp) click for less finger fatigue. The MX510 is sometimes promoted as a gamer's mouse, but don't let that deter you! This is an excellent, comfortable, high-performance mouse for anybody who spends a lot of time on the computer. I've been using one at home and may pick up another to use at work.
30 Great mouse for casual use or intense FPS gaming
The ergonomics of this mouse make it easy to use for casual use or for wrist tiring gaming. The grooves on both sides make it easy to grip and if necessary pick up and move quickly.

The scroller buttons above and below the scroll wheel are great for fast scrolling up/down a large page.

It took a little while to get used to the 2 thumb buttons, but it didn't take long before it was second nature.

The optics have been great and the movement is very smooth.

Overall a great mouse for many uses.

31 Great mouse, limited and simpleton software
I love the mouse. Well built, very responsive. Nice ergo. But "performance" and gaming mice should have highly flexible software. It is unforgivable that Logitech has continued to ignore the need to custom assign any button to any key or combination. This would be simple to do, just like writing a Mac driver for it.... I own an MX500 and I can't get over how great this mouse would be if I could custom assign buttons to more than their pre-canned options. 5 stars for mouse construction, but -2 for the software limitations and refusal to make it truly Mac compatible.
32 Fantastic mouse
By dar the best optical mouse I have used. I have tried various models of the MS optical mouse and the MX510 logitech mouse is the best by far. Accurate tracking and never loses tracking no matter how fast you move. Great on all surfaces.
33 Mouse Performs Well With Office Professional 2003
I bought this mouse in June, 2004 after seeing a demonstration of it on "Tech TV." The logitech drivers installed without a problem. I was able to comfortably navigate throughout the applications of my Microsoft Office Professional 2003 very easily. As compared with the clumsy scroll mouse that I had been using, this MX 510 is far superior. Because I did not want the hassle of battery replacement, I wanted to remain with a corded optical device. The only adjustment I had to make was to buy a solid black matsuited to optical mice.

34 Great ergonomics, but mouse wheel is an acquired taste
I recieved this mouse for free, near-new from a friend, as I did my Intellimouse Explorer 3.0a before that, so I think I can speak without the bias that comes along with wanting to justify/defend a given purchase. I think the MX510 has superior ergonomics (if you're right-handed, natch), particularly with the two side buttons located above the thumb rest. They are on a high ridge, compared to the Intellimouse, and are therefore much more difficult to press acidentally while surfing or playing games. The left- and right- click actions have their buttons seamlessly integrated into the top of the mouse, which is one less thing that can break in the long run. The scroll buttons on the top and bottom of the scroll wheel are nicely placed and useful, even for people with relatively small hands like myself. The MX510 also has some decent heft to it, considering that it doesn't have a tracking ball or batteries inside it. However, the mouse wheel itself is much stiffer than what I'm used to with most of the other mice I've used.

I don't recommend installing the software, however, as I've heard it's a bit glitchy and the pointer acceleration isn't very useful. Without it, you'll get still get functionality for all the but the task switching button. I never use that anyway, and it's also awkwardly placed. All in all, the MX510 tracks excellently and precisely, it just needs a smoother scroll wheel.
35 excellent tracking, but not perfect.
I agree with Kang here... the mouse has the most excellent tracking, but it was way too bulky and uncomfortable for me. I play games myself and am also right-handed. The main buttons and the mouse surface is made of this faux-turtle shell glossy plastic, which requires really really clean fingertips to not slip. I found myself wiping my hands and the mouse every hour.. I went back to my Dual Optical and I'm much happier.
36 Excellent product but somewhat dubious value
I bought this mouse after losing my old MX500 during a move. In general, I would say that you should buy the MX510 only if you don't have the MX500 and play games a lot. It's definitely better than the MX500 in terms of tracking but only if you turn the sensitivity way up. There are few situations outside of certain games where this is necessary so it's questionable how benefitial this improved tracking really is.

The only other difference between this and the MX500 is the holographic cover. This "feature" has no functional purpose other than to look pretty so it's of dubious value.

The MX510 retails for approximately $10-$15 more than the MX500 but aside from better performace in certain games and a different look, it's functionally the same. Thus one has to make a value judgement as to which is better.

At the time of writing, Logitech announced the MX1000, the replacement of the MX700, which is the cordless version of the MX500. The MX1000 features "laser tracking" which is supposedly 20 times better than the current MX sensor and also has a 5.8 megabit resolution. Since Logitech is sure to release a corded version of the MX1000, one might want to wait for this instead of buying the MX510 now.
37 Best Mouse I Have Ever Used - Period!
The Logitech MX510 is a major improvement in ergonomics and precise control over my previous mouse - the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer.

Initially, I was looking for a wireless mouse, but I was concerned about battery life and latency issues. I decided to forego the wireless options and am extremely happy I did.

The mouse should be very comfortable for all right-handers with medium to large-sized hands. The eight buttons are easily customizable and are located in comfortable positions. The software seems solid, though I have not used it extensively.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with this mouse and for anyone who needs precise control and does not need a wireless mouse, this should be their product.

Finally, I love the red color - adds a great flair to the look.
38 Very Fast, Very Comfortable
I just bought this mouse and was amazed buy it's comfort and procision, plus it has 8 buttions, all configurable. and it has even improved my gaming skill. The bottom line is this, This is an exelent gaming mouse, I will even go as far to say it's the best mouse I have used and it comes with my unrestricted recomendation!
39 Fast mouse...
I bought this mouse earlier this year when it was exclusive to Best Buy and before the blue one was out. I've been very happy with it so far. Very quick & responsive. Best mouse for gamers and quicker and more reliable than wireless, with no need for batteries or recharging!! Set-up was a breeze. I like the forward/back buttons on the side and the customizable buttons on top, makes surfing the net easier and more fun. My sole complaint is it lacks the little red LED my old microsoft mouse had, but that's just a cosmetic/design issue. The MX 510 is very smooth and fits my hand comfortably. Amazon has a great price w/ free shipping too! Highly Recommended.
40 WOW!!!!!!
I mean, I've been comparing Logitech MX 510 Performance Optical Mouse and the Microsoft tilt mouse, but this mouse recovers the fact that it can't tilt, but only on spreadsheets do u need t hat ability.. u can change between documents without using Alt+Tab!! wow
41 Best Mouse I've Ever Used
Having been a computer gamer and user most of my life, I've come in contact with many different mice. The mx510 is the best.

The design is the same as the mx500, mx700, and mx900 series, a somewhat tried-and-true style. The forward and back buttons (on the left side of the mouse) are close enough to use easily, but aren't in danger of being accidentally clicked. The up and down buttons (positioned above and below the scrollwheel) take some getting used to, but are useful enough to outweigh this. The up button *isn't* the most natural button, but I'm able to click it with my forefinger easily (despite reviews to the contrary), and my hands are average sized.
The switch application button seems to be the only downfall of the mouse. It isn't as easy to reach as the other buttons and its usefulness is questionable. A friend of mine with the mx700 (same design, just a little older and wireless), however, swears by that button and says he couldn't be happier that it was included. Even in the case of someone who doesn't like it, it really doesn't take away from the mouse; you'd don't have to use it if you don't want to.
Note: I would not recommend this to anyone that uses a mouse with their left hand.

The optical engine is newer and supposedly better than the older mx500s and mx700s. I, however, haven't really noticed a difference, having used an mx700 before. Despite that, it's amazingly smooth. I have heard people online and in person complain that it "jerks" or is "twitchy," but I'd venture a guess that most of those people either do not have quality mousepads or have incorrect sensitivity settings in their OS. One person who mentioned the twitchiness to me in person showed it to me, and then was surprised when I fixed it easily by turning on "Enhance pointer precision" and lowering the sensitivity. The mouse will track on virtually anything: fabrics (if you're using a laptop while sitting on the couch), just about any hard shiny surface (that traditional trackball mice have difficulty with), plastic, paper, metal, you name it.

The software included is easy to use and has never had a compatibility issue that I've seen. Remapping *any* of the buttons to a variety of different controls is easy. For example: I was able to map the up and down buttons to "next song"/"last song" in Winamp, which is one of the coolest things I've seen a mouse do.

Overall it is a wonderful product and a great deal for someone looking for a new, stylish, light, and feature intensive corded mouse.

42 Not very comfortable (I'm right handed)
I'm an avid gamer heavily into online FPS games. So it goes without saying the mouse is one of the more important equipment to a gamer like myself. I took a look at this mouse, looked very snazzy, and the design seemed rather ergonomic. Didn't have a store display model I can play around with, but I still purchased this anyways.

Been using this for about a week now. If you're a FPS gamer, you'll realize that when you move your mouse, you often times lift the mouse up and reposition and move the mouse again. This wasn't made for that. There is a groove for the thumb but the groove on the right side seems to have been made for the ring finger, but feels more comfortable placing my pinkie finger there.

And because of that oddly placed groove on the right side, I'm constantly struggling to find a good position to lay my hands on. I've been on the recieving end of someone's muzzle many times because I was preoccupied with trying to find comfort.

For basic window navigation and web surfing, it's okay. The back page button is real handy, and the autoscroll down button (right below the wheel) saves me the hassle of constantly scrolling the wheel. However, the forward page button and autoscroll up button is placed in an awkward position, requiring you to reposition your hand just to reach those two.

Not a horrible purchase by far. Haven't had trouble...yet.

edit - 3 June 2004:

I just noticed this. Try this the next time you're in a store with a display model of Mx 510. Flip the mouse around so the buttons are pointing at your direction. Now, put your LEFT hand on the mouse. REAL comfortable, aren't they? The thumb groove is not crampy, and the pinkie and ring finger now has a VERY comfortable spot!

Did logitech put the grooves on backwards?! My goodness!

43 Excellent optical mouse with accurate tracking.
This optical mouse has accurate tracking. It can track well on surfaces where other optical mice would have failed. The extra buttons make desktop navigation quicker and more convenient. Because this mouse is chorded and does not require batteries, it weighs very light. Although the mouse is sort of bulbous in shape, it fits people with small hands. However, this mice prefers right handers because of the location of the thumb rest and thumb buttons. I think this mouse is ideal for people who do both office work and gaming.
