1 The worst mouse and the terrible Logitech
I currently live in Taiwan. On April 16, I bought a Logitech Laser Cordless Mouse MX1000 whose Product Number and Model Number are 852152-0200 and LZC50705219 respectively. However, I found that the mouse cursor often jumps unpredictably. This "jumpy mouse cursor scenario" occurs quite often, say approximately three times or above in an hour. This is a very serious problem to me since I usually spend a long time in the front of screen. Then on May 3, I took this mouse to the customer department of the Logitech company. They promised to help me to deal with this problem. On May 5, the customer department returned my mouse and said that, after their tests, this mouse does not have any problems and functions very well. But they did not tell me who performs the tests, how and how long thay performs the tests? Do I need to tell a lie? I cannot believe that the Logitech company demonstrates such a bad, terrible, horrible attitude towards their customer. The worst, I pay about US 80 dollars to buy this flaw product. Therefore, I have to say that Logitech Laser Cordless Mouse MX1000 is the worst mouse I have ever bought (as far as cursor movement is concerned).
2 Expensive, but worth it
My old Intellimouse was starting to wig out on me, so I went to the store today to pick out a new mouse. Frankly, I wasn't going to get a wireless mouse, but when I saw this new laser technology, and felt how good the mouse felt in my hand, I had to try it. It's the most expensive mouse I've ever bought, but it's worth it! It even works on my favorite mouse pad (looks like a "Oui-Ja" board) that I had to quite using because my Intellimouse wouldn't track on it! This thing is so smooth, and so precise that I feel like I've gone from a plastic piece of crap to a fine instrument.
Worth every penny!!
3 Logitech MX1000
First off this is a great mouse! It has good ergonomics, plenty of features, great resolution and no tail! The MX1000 is the most comfortable mouse I have ever used. The shape and size is a perfect fit for my hand. One word describes the button placement and feel.... Perfect! The bundled software is simple and intuitive and works on both Mac and PC. I have verified this with my Windows XP game system and my MacOS 10.3 workstation.
I use the MX1000 as my primary mouse and a Razor Diamondback as my gaming mouse. The Diamondback is not nearly as comfortable in my hand but it's got a huge leg up on resolution and a cord is a plus. Battery life on this mouse is great, I've forgotten to charge it from time to time and I have never been let down. If you do fully discharge it the recharge is fast too. I've used it with 3 different mouse pads (Icemat 2nd ed, Ratpadz GS and a nice little oriental rug pad) and tracking is prefect.
The only problem with this mouse is that from time to time the cursor jumps because it looses connection with the base. This is quickly fixed by pressing the reset button on the bottom of the mouse. This along with the resolution keeps me from playing games with it. Please note the jumping does NOT occur often, but is something potential consumers should be aware of. It happens maybe once a week for me and is not a problem when running office apps and such.
4 Greatest mouse I've ever used
I have had this mouse for about a month and it has worked perfectly for me on every surface I've tried. It has absolutely no lag and has a bunch of buttons such as side ways scrolling and page up and down buttons. You can't go wrong getting this mouse.
5 Laser Lights Out!!
This mouse has all the bells and whistles the tracking is perfect you can move anywhere on your monitor in about a 2 square inch area. The size and shape of the mouse keep your hand relaxed at all times. Recharging is only necessary about every two weeks (if that) even if you use it for a couple hours daily. This is a huge benefit as my previous mouse ate up batteries at a clop of about 4-8 a month. Scrolling is a breeze with side to side and up and down feature. If you are going to put out $30-40 bucks for a wireless mouse step up for the extra $20 it is WELL WORTH IT!
6 Lawrence has problems answered in Growman's review.
Lawrence,
Read the review from GROWMAN a few pages back. He tells you how to fix your problems. They can be fixed and are not problems. You are not using your MX1000 right.
The MX1000 will also work holding the mouse above the surface (without touching) so any surface can do in theory. I use any mouse pad.
The jitter is because of a bad signal (you have metal objects near your base unit! The guide tells you this). Read GROWMAN and your guide again.
This is a pro mouse. MX1000 works no problem.
7 The next revolution in mice?
Well I've been using this mouse for about 4 months now and I figured it was time to write a review. My "mouse history" over the last few years goes from a 'normal' mouse, to an optical Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer, then to a wireless MS Intellimouse Explorer, then to this Logitech MX1000. This is BY FAR the best mouse I have owned or used.
First, the change from a traditional mouse with a tracking ball on the bottom to an optical mouse was a revolution. Mice became so much more smooth and precise. Then came wireless mice and the convenience of not having to deal with a cord and the freedom that provided in where and how you use your mouse made it difficult to ever go back to a corded mouse. Now comes the laser mouse, and unbelievably, it makes a substantial enhancement on the optical technology. It's similar, but better. It's surprising how much more accurate and smooth-tracking it is when compared to optical mice. It's one of those things that you'll just have to experience to really understand.
One thing that I wanted in a mouse was a charging station. The wireless Microsoft mouse just went through AAs like candy and so I decided that a charging station setup was a must-have for my next mouse. What I didn't expect was how long the batteries on this baby would last between charges. I would say it easily goes a couple of weeks without needing to be charged. I probably only charge it once or twice a month (but I only use it for maybe 15 hours a week because most of my time is spent on my laptop). BUT, I don't see why this really matters for most people since it's pretty easy to set it on the charging station when you're not using it. I don't do that because I have the base setup in a rather unconventional place (off the desktop and out of the way, but only a slight hassle for me to get to).
Another thing I really like about this mouse is the button configuration. Do you remember what it was like to not have a scroll-wheel on a mouse? That seems like the Dark Ages now. That's also how I feel about having only two (or one ;) button on a mouse. The addition of the forward and back buttons near the thumb on the MS mice I owned became indispensable for me. The Logitech adds the application-switching (alt-tab) button between them, the tilt scroll wheel for easier horizontal scrolling, and the 'cruise control' buttons above and below the scroll wheel.
If you can't tell, I love this mouse and would buy it again in an instant. I do, however, have some complaints. This has probably been mentioned in previous reviews, but my mouse would skip around quite a bit for no reason at all. I found a lot of information about this problem on the Logitech forums but ultimately just decided to use the PS/2 adapter to connect to my computer instead of a USB port. Problem solved. If you have the software installed, I haven't witnessed any loss in functionality in comparison to having it connected via USB, plus, this obviously saves you from having to occupy yet another USB port on your computer. My other complaint is that the wireless signal seems pretty sensitive to interference (more so than the Microsoft wireless) so you may have to experiment with your base placement before you find the ideal setup for your space.
This is an excellent mouse with very few drawbacks. If I had made a description of what my perfect mouse would be, this has it all (except that I still have to use my hand to move it :)
8 Excellent!
After having used cheap Microsoft wireless and wired mice for a few years, I found myself wanting the extra buttons that seem to be appearing on many mice now, such as the back/forward buttons. It was between this and the IntelliMouse Explorer, but I bought this one because of the advertised laser technology.
I didn't expect much of the laser, a little better than optical at best, but I had no idea it would be this much better! My cursor has never skipped even a little since using this (unlike MS mice) and the reception is great. I can move with pixel accuracy.
The software is also really nice. Almost every button can be customized, including the scroll speed and application switch. This is good because by default the back and forward buttons don't seem to work with Firefox, my favorite browser. I found something online that told me to switch the back/forward buttons to Generic, and now it functions correctly.
Several times I have used this mouse continually for two days without charging it, but the battery indicator never even lost one light.
Overall, I can't tell by the performance that this is a wireless, and the extra functions and ease of customization only make the experience better. I'm glad I gave this rather pricey mouse a chance. If you use a computer frequently, this is for you.
9 The Rolls Royce of mice.
This is an excellent mouse. Up till now I've been using a Logitech MX510. The MX510 is excellent, but I prefer the MX1000. The MX1000 is silky smooth. It just glides and the pointer is spot-on accurate. Now this mouse might not be for everyone. It is a little bit chubbier and heavier then other Logitech mice. This is not problem for people with big hands like me. I find the chubby design & deep thumb groove very comfortable. If your a gamer who consistently picks up and re-centers the mouse a lot, the weight may be a problem. Even though it is a little on the heavy side, it is very well blanced, and the extra large mouse feet make it easy to push around. I have used the mouse to play games like Battlefield Vietnam, Unreal 2k4, & to photo edit in photoshop with no problems. I haven't experienced any of the lag others claim to have experienced. Actually I can't tell the difference between this mouse and my corded MX510 in response times. This is the only cordless mouse I have used without any noticeable lag. The only downside to this mouse is the crappy Logitech software. It does not allow you to assign the extra buttons in games. But you can download a 3rd party program called Logigamer for this. I also like the button placement better on this mouse compared to the MX510. The application switch button is placed in a much more desirable location on the MX1000, and I like the click wheel better, it's a tad smoother then the MX510. Overall this mouse feels very nice, it doesn't feel cheap. That's probably cuz it's not, but it's worth it! Treat yourself and get one. By the way, the battery will last longer then any other cordless and the battery indicator will tell you when to charge. How cool is that?
10 Logitech makes a Quality Mouse debut, wow.
I'm going to have to admit something, though I'd easily whore myself to every category of Logitech product, I despise their mice, every Logitech mouse I've tried I've found uncomfortable. This is mostly due to their small, teardrop shape, my large hand, and a lack of some comfort features I found on Microsoft mice.
The MX1000 changed everything, I waited a while to order it, considering I had no money and there were quite a few reported lemons, mine came in and worked flawlessly from the start. The ergonomic features of this mouse shame any other small "Grooves" in most mice, the only bad thing is you lefties are just that, left out, it's for Right handed mousers only. While I admit that my pinky finger can touch the mouse pad, I attribute this to my larger hand, which is a comfortable fit for the MX1000 and lets me use those fast-scroll buttons easier than most.
I have not witnessed any of the various glitches mentioned by people, nor the possible deviation if the mouse is moved quickly, and straightly, in one direction, there is something I have encountered though. This mouse, when lifted high enough off it's surface and placed back down, will have a less-than-a-second lag, this isn't relevant to most, but Gamers who lift their mice higher off the pad for repositioning during game play might find reason to reject this otherwise fine mouse.
I've used it extensively in games, as I am an avid PC Gamer, and play a wide assortment of the latest, and the greatest (to which no age applies to) and it's worked flawlessly as a mouse. Though on the other hand, the buttons don't work very well with a lot of games, why you ask? Well there is a sneaking evil in this mouse, as there is in all products; they call it a "Fatal Flaw" which might displease a lot of people.
SetPoint, is the software, or lack thereof, it is the largest downfall of the MX1000, it has a total lack of customization, and the forward/back buttons must be changed to work with the widely used open-source browser Firefox. SetPoint is not a gamer friendly piece of software, nor does it give you much to work with, unlike the iTouch software there is absolutely no customization to be had. I repeat, no customization, there are only pre-set options for what each button does, and these can be interchanged, so don't expect something along the lines of the Razor Diamondback.
Laser sensitivity cannot be meddled with either, but the lack of that setting is made up for by cursor speed, scroll speed, and even Smart Move features. This mouse is obviously an innovative product for its Laser engine; the corded version should be wildly popular with gamers as there shouldn't be anything to compete with its precision and power. Hopefully it will be better at handling repositioning in a seamless motion once it's corded.
The time between recharges is a bit off too, and some worry about the integrated battery solution, though it is true for 10 minutes or so the mouse will be good for the entire day. The times between recharges range from a week for the more intense users (myself included) all the way up to 21 days for the on and off average person. The battery indicator is a lovely feature for all us feedback junkies, and gives me a constant indicator as to how much juice is left.
The Tilt Wheel is an interesting feature; my personal opinion is it needs to scroll just a little bit faster on maximum settings, as it is just a little bit too slow for me. The fast scroll buttons are very useful and I'd like to see them used on other mice, if placed better for the majority of people who might not have big enough hands and long enough fingers to really reach them comfortably. The Application Switch is nice if you don't feel like Alt Tabbing, and not having the hold the two buttons to keep the selection on-screen is more than welcome, though I still don't find myself using it much.
I look forward to the MX3100 Desktop Duo, featuring the spiritual successor to the amazing Logitech Elite Keyboard; the MX3100 will feature the successor, the MX300, and the MX1000 Laser Mouse, making them Logitech's new flagship duo, and this mouse is more than worthy of taking part in that duo.
Features 4/5
Customization 2/5
Ergonomics 5/5
Battery Life 5/5 (None much better)
Overall 5/5
(This is not an average)
11 It DOES Work With Firefox!
I just purchased this mouse after reading mostly good reviews about it. Some users have had problems using the MX 1000 with Firefox. For those having trouble, you haven't been playing around with the software long enough. In under 10 minutes I reassigned the back/forward buttons using the "other" setting. Just press "select function" and select "generic button" for both the back and forward buttons. On the center click button use the "middle button" option.
Anyway, my main purpose here is to let everyone know that this is a great mouse. It's not for everyone, as it may seem a bit heavy or cumbersome to those with smaller hands, but it is by far among the most ergonomic mice I've used.
Thus far, my only issues are:
1. For the money, scroll wheel should feel more solid when scrolling.
2. USB cable should power the base station. Cord usage should be MINIMAL with wireless devices.
Otherwise, I am happy. Good job, Logitech.
12 Great hardware, software stinks
Pros: Very accurate and smooth movement even in heavy games, battery lasts very long and charges quickly, lots of programmable buttons, sits nicely in hand.
Cons: Buttons are a bit hard and some of them require hand repositioning. No "Minimize all" button assignment! No profiles for gaming (LogiGamer makes up for this, but it still needs a lot of debugging)! Logitech MUST rewrite the software.
13 Great but too fast
It's a great mouse. Worked as soon as it was plugged in, even without installing the software provided. Customization of the buttons is great, and easy. The only the I don't like about it is that I'm not used to the speed of the cursor, and the sensitivity. There is a feature to adjust it but the way it is default is too fast, and one step slower is far too slow. Wish it could be customized better =/
14 There's no going back to other mice, now!
I purchased my Logitech MX1000 Laser Cordless Mouse about five or six months ago, and I'm hooked. I'm a computer geek -- programmer (web developer), digital photography pro and habitual Internet surfer. I spend countless hours at my computer, and I quickly discover what input devices work for me and which don't. The MX1000 works for me. Its smooth tracking, ergonomic feel and controls, superb battery life and convenient battery status lights and yes, it's coolness (geek) factor due to using a laser, make it the only mouse I use on my desktop computer now.
I will note, however, that the first MX1000 mouse I purchased I had to return for replacement due to a loose left mouse button that provided inadequate resistance and caused accidental clicks. My replacement MX1000 has worked without fail since I received it 6 months ago. I use it daily, for hours at a time. No complaints!
15 The Good, the Bad, and the Mouse
I have two of these beauties and have mixed feelings about them. With some changes, I could rave about them.
The Good
1. For my hand shape and size, this is the best mouse I have ever used, and I have tried and bought many through the years because I have mild Carpal Tunnel that is caused by mouse use and is sensitive to the shape of the mouse.
2. The laser really does make a difference. I have never needed a mouse pad with these mice on any kind of surface, even polished wood and rough plastic.
3. Logitech's MX engine is the most accurate on the market. You can do a quick test of the smoothness of a mouse by moving the cursor at a diagonal across the screen. You will see lesser mice make a jagged path. This is the first cordless I have used that I cannot tell the difference between it and the best corded mice using this test.
4. Some applications, like heavy-duty technical work and gaming, demonstrate a clear difference between cordless mice in action/reaction time. This is the first cordless I have used that keeps up in speed with the best corded models.
The Bad
1. Don't believe Logitech's literature on battery life. Both of my mice won't go beyond one week between charges. This would not be so bad, except no one else at my home seems constitutionally capable of putting the mouse back in the cradle. It takes about 20 minutes to charge it enough for a few hours of use.
2. The price. Ouch!!! Logitech, it is no longer 1984, when your customers expected to pay over $200 for a good mouse.
3. With its large receiver/cradle and its need for 120V power, the MX1000 cannot be practically used with portable computers.
4. A non-replaceable battery. The literature says after an estimated 5 years of use you will have to send it back for battery replacement. Logitech, didn't you learn from Apple's iPod example?
The Mouse
I had high hopes that this was the one, the perfect mouse, after all these years, after trying dozens and owning about twenty. These devices have improved vastly over the years. Alas, not to perfection. Still, the MX1000 is a unique and high quality product, superb in almost every way. But is it for you?
16 Nice piece of hardware
The Logitech MX1000 Laser Cordless Mouse comes in a handsome packaging with a faux hologram pattern hinting at the laser technology employed by this mouse's optical engine. The package includes an AC power adapter for the charging base, the mouse, and the base station itself. Logitech includes a PS2 adapter which is a nice touch for those who might not have a spare USB port. Also included are the mouse software disk and a quick start guide printed in English, French, and Spanish.
Setup was no problem on my machine running Windows XP. The operating system recognizes the mouse almost instantly, and software installation is straightforward. Installing the Logitech drivers and software allows you to adjust mouse speed, report rate, and to assign custom commands to the buttons on the mouse. Surprisingly, there is no way to set mouse orientation. This is a bit of an oversight in my opinion. You see, the mouse is designed to an ergonomic specification, and the way it fits in your hand will not be the same for everyone. Some, like me, will find that mouse accuracy is somewhat sacrificed because you cannot tailor the mouse orientation to your particular taste. This is not a major shortcoming however, and I am sure I will be able to adjust in time. Or perhaps Logitech will update its driver soon to include an orientation adjustment.
There is no mouse lag that I can detect. I have used the device to play fast-action multiplayer online games such as Call of Duty, Quake, Unreal Tournament, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and Soldier of Fortune. The mouse itself has a nice battery meter which always stays lit. It consists of 3 green lights which eventually fade to one red light indicating a low charge. I have tried leaving the mouse out of the charging cradle for a week at a time, and have had no battery issues. Typically I charge the mouse on the weekends only, and I find this to be sufficient for my needs.
The mouse itself has an on/off switch which I do use to power the mouse off at night. Presumably this helps conserve battery power. I have heard some people indicate that the mouse will go into "power save" mode when left idle for some time. I have no documentation from Logitech to support or disprove that statement, but I must say that battery life is nothing short of phenomenal.
I bought this mouse as my first venture into the cordless input device market. There tend to be a lot of peripherals on my desk what with the PDA charger cradle etc. I must say that I am completely satisfied with my purchase. I successfully reduced the clutter on my desk, and I have found that the mouse transmitter does not interfere with my work buddies in adjoining cubicles who also have wireless mice.
This product receives 4 stars because the price is a little high... $49.99 would be a better value rather than the $59.99 I paid. Also, I had a minor complaint about not being able to set the mouse orientation, so it just missed the 5 star rating.
17 Love it!
As a software developer, I love the sideways scrolling feature. Lets me look at more code easily. All of the other buttons are useful for surfing the net. The laser is cool, much more sensitive and works on any surface.
I'm hooked on wireless mice, but don't like burning thru batteries. This has a nice charging/receiving station and a lithium ion battery. One charge should last 10 days.
The only feature I don't like is a button near your thumb for switching applications. Not very useful and too easy to hit by accident. There is probably some way to disable it.
18 OK ....It is laser...so what?
Ya..it is good and have heard good breaking technologies.. Never found it very useful though. Ofcourse tons of problems with the setpoint software which has a jumping cursor problem with this mouse.
Overall the mouse is a good experience but still an overkill. Ergonomically very good and all buttons are awesome too.
19 Smooth, Comfortable, Attractive, Accurate, No problems
The feel seemed odd at first, but it grew on me. The thumb rest was very odd at first, but now I can't imagine not having it. Emits no light (visible light anyway...uses infrared), charge lasts a long time, and recharge is quick. Left and right button click takes slightly more effort than my old Logitech Optical Mouseman, but isn't noticeable after a week or two. Tracking is incredibly accurate, and very fast as well. Took a while to get used to gaming with it (Halo, Halflife 2, etc), as it never misses a beat like my old mice used to, (both ball and optical). Left and right side of mouse have nice soft feel...hard to describe..but it's much more inviting than the typical plastic feel. I havn't had any driver or software issues.
20 Not for the stupid
If people did not write baby reviews and read the good ones like the reviews a few pages back you will learn.
The mouse works with all applications. You need to get the appropriate drivers that allow key assignments. The mouse can be configured to work with firefox. Anything as long as you find the drivers. Ergonomics are different, take days to break in, but a way better than you thought possible. No bluetooth on this version, but on a different MX model. Anyhow read the other reviews for what you need to work. 10 buttons need to be configured. Use PS/2 port if mouse jumps or move base station away from metal. Get latest drivers. Read other reviews.
21 Beware CAD Users
This Mouse will NOT allow the Scroll button to Pan-Realtime. And the Software will not allow you to disable it at all. The only way to use this mouse with CAD is to uninstall the software entirely and abandon the functions of all the other fancy buttons. Logitech must have spent 5 minutes testing this mouse.
22 Top Of The Line?
I purchased this mouse with high expectations: at $80.00+ it had to be good right?!?. Unfortunately, it came loaded with problems. Here are a few: poorly placed buttons that required completely reorienting your hand to use, poor software GUI, incompatibility with other Logitech receivers, LESS button programmability than with older products (no minimize all feature?!?! Come on!!!) and the kicker, random cusor jumping. On the plus side, it did come pre-charged and the on-off button appears to work.
To be fair; it may not perform very well, but at least it's expenive.
23 computerguy8898
This is by far the most comfortable mouse I have ever used. Even for gamers, this mouse gets the job done. The battery gauge is especially useful. I have pretty big hands, so I can reach all of the buttons fairly easily, but I could see how others could have some problems. Setup was a breeze, and I have not had any tracking problems at all. The only problem I have with the mouse is that the forward and back buttons don't work with Firefox. Excellent mouse, well worth the money if you use your computer a lot.
24 Great but look elsewhere
This is a great new mouse from logitech with amazing precision and tons of custimizable buttons but you can find it at other stores for much cheaper. Search pricegrabber.com to find it for as low as $63!!!!!
25 BEWARE: NO BLUETOOTH
This is definitly not the mouse you want if you intend to use it with a laptop because you'll have to carry the clunky base station with you AT ALL TIMES. I had thought the mouse would be bluetooth but I found out the hard way that it is not. It is a great mouse for its brief period of usage but those of us with bluetooth ... at least me anyway ... don't want all the extra assessories.
First no on/off switch for the 900mx.
Now the newer mouse doesn't have bluetooth.
Call me critical but I am extremely dissappointed with Logitech's shortcomings and now they're no longer my favorite mouse company.
26 poor ergonomics
This mouse would be excellent if the ergonomic problems with it were solved.
To use the scrolling wheel, one must orient their hand so it is curved up above the entire mouse - very cumbersome - the tendency is to want to scroll not with the tip of one's finger but rather somewhere close to the knuckle! One cannot simply lie one's hand on the mouse (the Microsoft folks got this right) Also, while scrolling the forward and backward scroll switch are not easy to reach unless one readjusts their hand position (or can you say carpal tunnel). Similarly, the side thumb switches are misplaced too far back. I also agree with a reviewers previous comment that the area to rest one's thumb is too narrow (this is true even for my wife who has itsy bitsy fingers).
The wobbling of the base is something that could have easily been alleviated by removing one of the plastic pads (thus having three instead of four). As it stands, if one is removed from the current design it is even more unstable (arghhh!)(ever heard of a tripod, Logitech?).
What is amazing is that after making millions of these damn mice one company can't get it all right. As it stands I am more comfortable with my $9.99 optical mouse.
27 Incredible Mouse
This mouse is the best mouse I have ever owned by far!!! Its laser first off so it works 100s times better than optical on wood or other grainy surfaces. The base charger is very nice and there are no problems getting the mouse to sit in the cradle properly as I have had with previous mx model wireless mouses. It is the first mouse I have seen or heard of with a scroll wheel that scrolls sideways as well! It also has a power switch on the bottom similar to a small laptop mouse. In addition to the power switch, it AUTOMATICALLY turns off when its not being used. There are three led lights that act as battery meter on the mouse itself!
Before writing this review, I attempted to find at least one thing I could say that I didn't like about this mouse. The only thing I came up with is software related and not really about the mouse at all. I just wish there were more choices in what function you want the buttons to perform. That's all I came up with.
If you have the money and are willing to spend it then this mouse is FANTASTIC!!!
28 Great mouse
I was looking for a mouse that was cordless and did not need batteries.I purchased the mx 1000 and could not be happier it was a breeze to set up and works perfectly. It is extremely comfortable in my hand and very accurate without wandering.I highly recommend this mouse to anyone seeking a quality product
29 Bad Software Ruins An Almost Perfect Mouse
DISCLAIMER: This product's rating is based on user experience in Mac OS 10.3. Experience with Windows may vary.
The Logitech MX1000 is almost the perfect mouse. It has it all the features you'd expect in a $80 mouse. It's comfortable. It feels solid and extremely well made. It's cordless, although the required docking station and receiver has a cord, and if you plug in the docking station's AC adaptor, you have two cords (Isn't the point of a cordless mouse to eliminate desktop clutter?). Luckily you only need to use the AC adaptor when you want to charge your mouse. Since the MX1000 includes an on/off switch to keep the battery from running down when your not in use, it's unlikely you'll need to charge it often.
Many people have complained about this mouse not having Bluetooth, and while this might allow you to ditch the bundled receiver and go completely cordless, you're battery won't last as long, since Bluetooth draws more power than RF. There's always tradeoffs.
I want to say something about the MX1000's major feature, laser tracking, but honestly, I didn't notice a difference between it and my old optical mouse in terms of accuracy. Keep in mind however, I'm not a gamer, so I'm not moving my mouse across the screen at insane speeds, where this feature might come in handy.
So if the MX1000 is such great hardware, why am I giving it 2 stars? Two words: lousy software.
Basically, Logitech's Macintosh drivers and configuration utility are horrible. While I can live with a lousy configuration program which doesn't allow me to adjust basic settings like mouse acceleration and click speed, or change the default setting of the the tilt-wheel from side-scroll to something more useful like forward and back in a browser, I can not live with a buggy driver which periodically causes my cursor to jump half way up the screen for no apparent reason. I've looked into this issue, and according to Logitech, it is not a hardware problem and can be fixed on Windows by installing their latest software. According to my knowledge, they have not released
or even promised a similar fix for the Macintosh, and I'm not going to wait.
While the MX1000 hardware is great, the software is not, and both must work for everything to run smooth. The mousing experience I'm experiencing now is not worth $80, so I'm returning this device and picking up a regular, old wired mouse. I've given up on cordless mice. The MX1000 was supposed to be the best, and I can't use it. Hopefully, I'll be happy with my new Macally iceMouse, which although wired, only adds one cord to my desk where MX1000 adds two.
30 awesome mouse, crappy software
I got this mouse for my birthday and i couldnt be happyer. the mouse itself is comfortable, responsive, and great for games. my only complaint is the software. It is incompatible with Firefox. this is easily fixed by shutting down the software though...
31 A worthy upgrade from the MX700
My MX700 was 'wandering' around the screen when used on my wood finish desktop without a mousepad.
I'm running XP SP2 and never installed the Logitech mouseware. My MX700 worked fine. Not having full button functionality is not a concern for me. The 'back' button worked as did the scroll wheel.
I turned my PC off, removed the 700, plugged in the 1000 and turned the PC back on.
XP fired right up and I was in business. No Logitech software needed and now the 'forward' button works too! More importantly, the 'wandering' has completely stopped and the movement is more precise than ever before.
I can't recommend this enough. While I can't attest to the software issues some folks have since I have no need to use the software, I have none of the other problems mentioned.
The mouse will turn itself off if you lift it too high, but that feature doesn't have any negative effect for me. I suppose there are people who may find it annoying if they routinely lift the mouse too high. That's a matter of individual behavior though.
I'm playing WoWarcraft, HL2, UT2004 and design graphics and edit photos and the precision of this mouse improves the experience.
32 mx1000 problems
i have a couple of problems with the mx1000. I have problems with the software. The side scrolls dont work on certain browsers like firefox also the back and front buttons dont work. i aslo have the problem with lifting it up. It freezes when u lift it up a slight bit so for gamers this is probably not the best and it is very sensitive.
33 Pro choice once you solve the issues
For work or for games the MX1000 reigns supreme once you get the bugs sorted out. Optical is now obsolete as this cordless mouse works with a receiver/recharge unit that has a range of a few meters but really should be used within a few feet of the receiver module - and a laser instead of optics meaning virtually real-time mouse movement with amazing accuracy (for the first time I can actually select text quickly without grabbing the space between words... WOW!) The receiver is a small docking bay with a small backend dish shape. The mouse sits on this for recharging and to be honest you will only have to recharge this once every other few days, even for power users.
The grip of the mouse feels good except for users with very big hands who may find the natural resting grip too small. The rest of us have a thumb rest and our fingers are more downwards on top but this gives us a way more control and also we can tilt the mouse wheel. This design is something new and will take time to break in... maybe several days... but in the end the change is well worth it.
The mouse requires two things.
(1)That the receiver is actually placed away from metallic objects like your monitor and other electrical drives and cables. If you do not do this then you may find that the MX1000 jumps because it looses its signal.
(2)That the surface you use is a very good one, like an ICEMAT II, or something very smooth or else you will get jumping.
If you can not do any of these then your mouse may suffer from jumping and ruin the experience completely as some others here have found. It is a matter of setting things up right.
If you want to game with this 10 BUTTON programmable mouse then you should use LogiGamer's MX1000 drivers after you install the original mouse drivers. Now you have 10 working buttons for something like Counter-Strike.
Overall this is an expert mouse, which means you will need to do a lot of adjusting with it, and spend more on a good surface, to get it really working well, but once you have you will be in control of the best pointing device on the planet.
We are nearing domestic V.R with this.
Pros:
- Laser speed.
- Great grip and thumb rest.
- 10 buttons.
- Wheel tilt.
- Wireless.
- Battery Life.
- Precision.
Cons:
- There is a steep learning curve.
- Receiver positioning is difficult.
- You may need a super mouse pad.
- Gamers need other drivers.
- Occasional jumping means some gamers might not be ready for wireless yet.
- Expensive
34 Warning - Not Worth a Hoot
I was using and will soon change back to my trusty MX700 because...
- very jerky movement and very difficult to precisly point the
- verticle scrolling is also jerky and continues even after you stop moving the wheel
- SetPoint is MUCH less versatile than MouseWare, You can't remap all of the buttons and those that you can, sometimes lose their custom features, I even downloaded the most recent drivers from logitech...to no avail. This was a clean install of setpoint, MouseWare has never been on this new hard drive.
- Lots of interference from the RF to my speakers. The receiver/charger is in the same location as the one from the MX700 was.
- Some loss of funtionality when using the FireFox browser
In conclusion, I feel that this is a step back and not forward from the MX 500/MX700 mice. I used it for 3 weeks to make sure it was not just the learning curve with any new mouse, but the mouse/SetPoint software itself.
EDITED 9 Apr 05 - I gave this mouse to a "ultra-gamer" friend who was going to buy one anyway. He liked the ergonomics and since he doesn't shift his bottons 1&2, he didn't have my complaint about not being able to customize this function. He says that he CAN see a difference with his Fung.net super mousepad. He gave it back to me as he said that the cursor will occasionally jump around and that the modest increase in performance isn't worth the flackey software.
35 The best yet!
I loved the MX 700 and still use it on one computer. But the MX1000 really does raise the bar. It seems to last several times as long on a charge in the base stand. It has a more sculpted shape that I find more comfortable in my hand. It might be more responsive but that's not noticeable to me though it seems as fast and precise as any corded mouse. I also like the 3 lights that indicate how much juice you have left. The older model just had a blinking red light. It also recharges much faster. One software glitch that is annoying and I haven't resolved is that the button that is supposed to send me back to my previous web page doesn't seem to work. So I have to navigate my arrow up to the Back arrow on top of the page which is annoying. Even with that, though I give it 5 stars. I might add that Logitech really backs their products. I did have a problem with one MX700 breaking and they sent me a replacement without question.
36 The MX 1000 is awesome!
I already had a high end cordless Microsoft Optical Mouse. The MX1000 blows it away. I bought the MX1000 for my kids computer but I might have to confiscate it for my computer. It is extremely responsive even surpassing most corded mice I have used. It is worth every penny. I might just have to buy another because it's that good. The ergonomics are very good. The mouse feels natural in my hand. It glides with ease over any surface with ease. It has plenty of button options which are programable.
The only quirk I found was that the back button doesn't work with the Firefox browser. I'm sure I could figure out how to program it. Barring that, this mouse is flawless, the battery is long lasting and build qulity is very good. The mouse fits neatly in the recharge cradle. All in all I find this to be an excellant product, and recommend it highly.
37 Questionable for Mac Users/CAD
I've had this mouse for three months or so, and am greatly disappointed. I have spoken to Logitech Support, and received little help.
The mouse worked well for a couple of months, with only minor tracking problems.
The mouse tends to track erratically, as I'm sure people have posted. Also, my mouse had the tendency to intermittantly scroll, without warning. After attempting every troubleshooting option the Logitech website offered (and some of my own), I called their support by phone.
When I contacted Logitech's Support, I was informed that the Logitech Control Center software was not optimized for the latest Mac OS. Their answer was not to use the Logitech software, which makes the mouse useless for me. The software allows the mouse to track faster, customize the buttons, et cetera. These are features that are required when using a mouse with a CAD program. Without those features, the mouse is less than advertised.
Essentially, Logitech never throughly tested their Mac drivers. The mouse is Mac compatible, but the software isn't compatible. For the price, the software is half (or more) of the lure.
38 Extremely Jumpy
The mouse has a tendency to jump the cursor around the screen when moving. It's somewhat random but the jumps can be very severe. For example, you could be moving in a small area at the center of the screen and suddenly find the cursor at the very bottom of the screen. I've tried both a 3M mousing surface and a regular black cloth mouse pad and the issue was prevalent on both. I thought it would be nice to have the advertised level of precision but the jumps defeat the purpose.
Update - Tried the latest logitech software, been on the phone with their tech support, and the conclusion is for me to send the mouse back to Amazon. Since many others are having favorable results, I'm going to try exchanging it for another MX1000 and hope for the best.
39 Great mouse, so-so shape
I love this mouse in that it is as accurate-if not more than my mx700. I had an mx700, but it broke, and Logitech send me this as a replacement. I wish they just sent me another 700. Although this mouse is incredibly accurate, I have huge hands, and the shape of this mouse is not as comfortable as the mx700. The back is more curved, and so my wrist hits the mousepad/mousing surface. It gets uncomfortable after a while. I love the design of the side buttons, as well as the new cruise control buttons, but the ergonomics aren't great. That is why it is a four star mouse.
40 Awesome
Being a gamer I was leery of this mouse to start with. Because 1 millisecond of hesitation will cost you the game. So most gamers have switched over to this mouse to finally cut the cord.
Pros: No cord, Wonderful Battery Life, and the ergonomic design is just to comfortable to put into words.
I recommend this mouse to anyone. Gamers do not fear cutting the cord, if you buy this mouse.
41 Excellent Product, Well Worth the Money
I have just installed this product on a custom-built XP Pro machine, and I am throughly impressed with its performance. The increased sensitivity was obvious from the moment I started it up. For those of you worried about some of the previous compadibility problems, let me tell you this: DO NOT USE THE INSTALLATION CD THAT COMES WITH THE MOUSE; the drivers and software are long outdated, and a newer version can be easily obtained for free at Logitech's webiste. As for the people who have had problems getting this mouse to work with the Firefox/Advant browsers, there is a simple solution: just open the setpoint software, assign the forward and back buttons to "General Button" under the other catagory in the configuration window, and set the scroll wheel button also to "General Button". This will resolve most (if not all) of the program incompadibilities that I have seen thus far via Logtech's forums. In short, I would highly reccomend this product for its sheer accuracy and customiztion options.
42 Fears Put To Rest!
I was somewhat skeptical after reading some of the information on the internet about purchasing this product. For all of you out there on the fence, let me say "go ahead". The "wobble" problem does not exist on my unit. There is no delay in pointer when I lift up the mouse...Tracking is far better with the laser technology. I have been playing with Pacific Assault and other FPS games. No problems at all. I think this is the new wave of mouse techology and Logitech has hit a home run from my perspective.
43 easy to disconnect
i am a huge logitech fan, i had mx500, mx700, rumblepad 2 etc, but this guy mx1000, really annoyed me, it always disconnected, wobble to top of screen, if you are a game player, your gun point to sky when enemy move to you, what do you feel?
very bad connection.
44 Mac OS X users DO NOT buy this mouse!
I use a Mac running OS X 10.3.7 and have been using the predecessor to this mouse, the Logitech MX700, all year without any problems. I bought the MX1000 today as an impulse buy (also because it was cheap) and wish I had done some research first.
The mouse JUMPS to the edge of the screen or a few inches in a random direction often (3 times in less than 5 minutes at last count). Logitech support forum states this is a known issue and you can correct it by downloading SetPoint. Great if you own a Windows machine, Apple users are left sitting in the dark. They also state the jumping only occurs if you use the USB connection and another solution is to connection via PS2 port. Again, great for windows users but for laptop users and Apple users who have no PS2 port not the best cure.
I would take it back but I am currently in USA and heading back to UK tomorrow morning so can't get back to the store. Since it's still new, think I'm going to box it back up and give it to my dad as an extra Christmas present, he's a Windows user so he can combat the jumping.
Just to re-iterate my point:
This mouse has a know FAULT and the cursor JUMPS. Windows users can fix this with drivers, Apple users are stuffed!
45 Great Idea Poor Follow Through
I bought This mouse hoping it wouldn't have the problems others seem to be having. I was wrong. It had erratic movements and often wouldnt connect. I tried to reinstall software, move base different areas's. Nothing seemed to fix it. Tech support basically blew it off. This was a great idea. Too bad logitech didn't follow through on some testing before they released it.
I would wait another year until they fix it or come out with something that works.
46 not much difference...
I am currently using Microsoft mouse and it is much lighter and comfortable. I like the laser, but I really cannot tell the difference between a laser and an optical tracking... My optical mouse performs just fine, but I bought this just to see how much the tracking will improve... again, not much. This mouse is too big and heavy for me. Like one of the other reviewer said, the grip is really funky! I use my mouse for 5-6hrs a day and this thing is way too heavy!!! it hurts my wrist after about 30min use!!! I was going to give it to my wife, but she cannot use it because of its weight and it is designed only for right handed users... she's left handed... I
47 nice, not for a laptop though
I was hoping it was a re-chargeable, wireless laser mouse, but you have to plug the base into pc making it not very portable. Very fast and reactive though. And works well on virtually any surface.
48 funky grip
ok I am proably the unpopulr one hear, but i am un happy with this mouse.
the mouse proformes with in expectations. it is in fact vary preices and the 800 dpi is vary fast. this mouse requires vary little efort on youre part. I can do around 30 slides in MS powere point in the same time it use to take me to do 20. it realy has helped with my working on day to day stuff.
howerver there is a problem. I can not seam to figure out how you are suposed to grab this thing. On the left side there is a indentation for the thumb, it has a tappered fit heading towordes the front. If you have a fat thoumb (like me I gess) or you grab the mouse to far foward you're thoumb kind gets weged in wich for me is uncomfortable. On the right side there is a ridge that sticks out at the top. This is my biggest hang up. I keep shifting my hand around becouse of this obstruction. I am constantly getting fragged because i am standing around looking at the roof when I should be aming, but instead I am shiftting my hand around to figue out what my fingers are supposed to be doing.
I think that this is a case where I am use to doing things a certin way and now I have to adjust. but I just dont get it. I am use to grabing the mouse on top with my fingers twords the front. with this mouse you will have to grab it from the rear with three fingers on top insted having youre fingers on the front of the mouse.
for the regular stuff like word ms powerpoint and the likes, its great but for gameing it is just uncomfortable.
I am realy unhappy because I love this mouses performance but for long use and fast past gaming it is just to uncomfortable.
If you can get around the grip this an awsome mouse. it is everything logitek claims it to be.
49 NO Lag, NO jumping cursor!
I was looking at this mouse for a little over a week (I previously used the MX700 from Logitech). My main reason for buying this one was:
- I am absolutely happy with Logitech mice, every single one I had was outstanding (and I had a few), but the one thing I did NOT like about the MX700, was the almost useless battery indicator, that only indicated when it was almost too late...
Therefore I was quite happy to learn that this mouse has a much more "sophisticated" indicator, that actually gives a representation of how much charge remains in the battery. I was a little hesitant to buy it after reading some of the reviews on this and other sites, concerning a lag in the cursor movement when picking up the mouse, and a cursor that was erratically jumping around on the desktop, but I decided to buy it anyway, and all I can say is: Wow! Apart from the battery indicator, I also prefer the slightly modified ergonomics over the MX700's. I can't really tell the difference as far as accuracy goes (I have a regular mnouse pad, so there wouldn't be too much of a difference anyway), but I already ordered a stainless stell mouse pad (MUCH more durable, easier to clean, no fabric that gets dirty over time), so I probably will be able to tell the difference then... concerning the errors some reviewers had: I tried to produce that "pick-up-lag" error others reported (picking it up, setting it down, picking it up at a 45degree angle, setting it down, ...), but I could not reproduce the lag AT ALL (naturally, I wanted to make sure the product I had had no "kinks" of any kind). Maybe I have a newer hardware revision of the mouse.
The "jumping cursor" problem was slightly different: I had the same problems with the drivers on the CD in the package, however, as soon as I downloaded the latest drivers from logitech's website (as of December 4, 2004), the jumping issue was gone...
I can only highly recommend this mouse to anyone, who is willing to pay the money for it...
And to make it clear: I have NO ties to logitech whatsoever (other than being a satisfied customer, of course)
50 Simply Awesome
Unlike many of the other reviewers I have not previously considered the mouse to be an integral part of my computer set-up. I always thought that a simple 2 button, 1 scroll-wheel optical wired mouse was plenty. Suffice to say I was wrong.
There is absolutely nothing bad I have to say about this mouse. It was a bit hard to get the habit of turning off the mouse when I wasn't using it, but even so I have had the mouse for three weeks and I have only had to recharge it once so far (coming up on 2 quickly though). A warning (that may be unique to my mouse) trying to use the mouse while it has just come off the middle of a recharge can affect the performance or a minute or so before it settles down. Of course this would not have been a problem if I had done the smart thing and recharged at night
The control is excellent compared to my old optical and the lack of a wire is really refreshing, although surprisingly it did take a while for my hand to adjust for the lack of the wire's extra weight.
The program to customise the buttons is good, as a compulsive tweaker I would have liked a few more options but the 20 or so given options for each should be more than enough for most.
Finally, the shape is very pleasant. It fits my hand very well, although I realised that with previous smaller mice I had often turned the mouse by pivoting my fingers, where as with this ergonomic design I could not and so I have to use my wrist a little more. It takes a little getting used to if you, like me, are accustomed to generic optical mice.
Overall: Buy this mouse! Particularly if you have only used generic mice this is easily worth the cost.
51 not worth the money...
I bought one of these from Best Buy for my PowerBook G4 (as I heard some bad reviews and wanted to be able to easily take it back just in case) about a month ago. I am glad I was able to return it. Yes it is accurate (until it gets near the corner of your screen). No I did not have the wobble problem. But for that much money, the cursor should follow the movement of the actual mouse. It would often times go crazy once it got to the corner of the screen, which was particularly annoying in games. It is also heavy and it isn't so much that the scroll wheel was hard to push, but to push it with the least (proper) resistance required one's hand to be at an awkward angle. I picked up a Logitech v500 instead and found it to be a much better replacement. Not quite as accurate but no bulky charging station, significantly lighter, and the coolest scroll pad, yes not a wheel, a pad. It is also less expensive. Personally I think the charging station kills the whole wireless thing. I much rather have batteries.
52 Good upgrade for MX700, very good mouse
This was a good upgrade to my aging MX700 (still kicking, bought it soon after it came out). Feels a bit lighter, and the fit of the mouse is slighter better (your hand is more cradled by the thumb rest). Tracking, even in FPS games, is excellent, on par with wired mice such as the MX510. On wood grained desks, its much more sensitive to surface movements. Whereas my MX700 would occasionaly miss a beat, this picks up every movement. And on my cuttered work surface, wireless for mice is the way to go.
Well worth the price!
53 Bummed...
It may have better tracking but you won't notice it. It feels like a brick in my hand. You can't successfuly negotiate finite mouse movements when your mouse weighs a ton. My $19 Logitech optical wheel mouse is far easier for the hand and I honestly can't tell the differece in tracking. The forward and backward buttons don't work in all browsers (I use Avant), and the up scroll button doesn't click to acknowlegde the command and yet the down scroll does. The only good thing I can say about this product is the ergonomic design.
54 Best mouse ever!!!!!!!
I thought the old Logitech optical cordless mouse was the best mouse in the world, that one is nothing compared to the MX1000. Easy set up, thank you Logitech for the rechargable mouse, now I don't have to rob the flashlight for batteries. Great tracking, just supurb technology, I am really really impressed. Buck for buck, this is about as good as it gets in new gizmos.
55 Bad for Elite gamers, great for everything else.
This mouse is bad for Elite Gamers, because when flipping 90 degrees to nail a target at long range with ELITE precision, this mouse is bigger and heavier than it's preceding wired mice (like the MX310). What's bad for games, is good for everything else. Your hand just melts into this mouse, and long-term, it's much more comfortable, but us crazed gamers grasp the light itty-bitty mice with the tips of our fingers like we're on caffine, and you can't do that with this mouse, so nono for ELITE gamers, in my opinion anyway. If you're a standard gamer you probably won't even notice the difference.
For everything else, It's a beautifly precise mouse, that has lots of nice buttons, works for days without a charge, and charges in an hour or so. Also, it doesn't "have" to 8 inches away from anything, it's "recommended", I think, but I have it a couple inches from my monitor and computer and neither harms it at all.
56 Perfect mouse
The accuracy of this mouse is far superior to any other mouse I have used (including its predessor by Logitech). Working all day on CAD drawings leads wrist pain so the more accurate the mouse, the less stain involved lining up the cursor. This mouse has virtually eliminated the pain caused by a jumpy or imprecise mouse.
57 Great mouse!
I am by no means a computer whiz, but when I saw this mouse, I just wanted to try it. I have had it a couple of days and am really glad I got it. The included installation directions were simple, illustrated and easy to follow. Basically, charge mouse, plug charger into computer, insert installation CD, follow on-screen set-up, reboot and it works like a charm. No more cord, tracking is VERY responsive (takes a slight bit getting used to)and much more comfortable to use than a regular mouse. Although it has lots of programmable options for all of its buttons, I am content to use the defaults which make surfing and scrolling through documents a breeze. This mouse is well worth the little extra it costs and I highly recommend it.
58 Best Mouse Ever
I love this thing. I tried the MX700 and it was a pig, too big and slow. I'm using the MX1000 w/a Mac G5 and it works great. The tracking is frankly amazing, super sensitive but you don't feel like you are on edge trying to control w/micromovements. I have a small platform for my mouse to sit on so I was wary of this thing being too big, but it works great. In the last 6 months I've been through 5 different mice. This is miles beyond any of the others (including Apple's, Kensington's wireless, MX700, the Bluetake).
59 MX1000 movement
After hooking up this mouse, it was constantly jumping to the top and left side of the screen by itself. Even after the patch installation when I was scrolling across my desk, it would stop moving for a few inchs. I then hooked up my Locitech 700 cordless optical mouse and it works perfectly. I also like the way the optical 700 wires go up to the charger- receiver. There is only one vs two on the laser mouse. I really dont see much advantage to the laser myself.
60 Made for a large hand
This laser mouse works very well. The mouse is too large and too heavy. It is definitely made for a man. So mine is being returned! Another item of interest, the base has to sit 8" away from anything electrical and metal.
61 a smart little mouse without the brains
I am getting this mainly for the battery life. Lithium batteries are simply better than Ni Cad. My Gameboy SP uses one and I have not had a loss in capacity due to not charging it.::D Telephones could follow this example. The battery strength is indiacated right on the little fella it's self, so you don't need the stink'n software to tell you when to recharge.(smart piece of hardware). The conservative look to the MX1000 will impress the chicks too because you won't just look like a stupid gamer,;>) you'll look like you have a home office and making dough.(even if your not). As far as looks go its fine, but that is not a reason to buy anything. This mouse is for games as well as drawing computer pictures and works like the MX510 minus the button config. The two buttons do not work in games(NWN can use the middle push for vertical cam but it hurts the hand). Most games I play don't need the buttons 4-5. I am buying with the LX only if the LX has an item that comes without it's own mouse. RPG's don't need the extra persision and FPS is good only in Fragging other living oponents. My MX510 works great in drawing freehand computer pictures but I've heard this one's better so I am purchasing one.
62 Awesome Mouse
I was looking for a new mouse because I had the cordless duo and was looking for an upgrade. I stumbled across this mouse and it's amazing. I have had no problems at all with it. 100% accurate, it is a night and day difference from my old mouse. If you are thinking about getting this mouse, then I am telling you to think no more, buy it now, you will not regret it. I have it running perfectly on Windows XP SP2, P4, and 1 Gig of ram. I use Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash, Visual Studio.NET 2003 a ton usually about 9+ hours a day, so I am constantly using a mouse and I highly recommend it.
63 Accurate, solid on Mac OS X
I'm using my new MX1000 in a Macintosh environment.
Logitech's OS X driver installed flawlessly. The mouse control center appears as a submenu under System Preferences. Everything is intuitive. Map keys to your heart's content. Center click on the mousewheel is a great place to assign Expose's desktop-exploding F9 function.
The mouse's big selling point -- its laser element -- is a worthwhile improvement over IR sensors. The MX 1000 tracks perfectly on every surface I've tried. Lift the mouse, and the cursor stays where you left it. The mouse instantly re-acquires the curson when placed back on a flat surface. It's really quite impressive.
The mouse is physically stable and much taller than anything I've used before. The bells-and-whistles auxilliary buttons and rockers are easy to master. I particularly like the horizontal scroll function, which is activated by tilting the mouse wheel left or right.
I would like to see more control over scroll and acceleration rates in future releases. The Cruise Control rocker, for instance, is too slow to be useful on my system.
The MX1000 is a great upgrade for Mac users wanting a well constructed, professional-grade three button mouse. In my opinion, the accuracy and stability of the laser element is worth its additional expense. Graphics pros, in particular, will enjoy the convenience and precision of this new offering.
64 Works fine for some, others have problems - I have none
I normally don't write reviews but I see a lot of conflicting reviews here so far and wanted to add my own thoughts. I previously owned an MS Optical desktop elite setup but when in a PC shop here I saw the MX1000 and wanted it as I've had problems with my MS mouse.
I got the mouse home, installed it, installed the software and went to test it on some games. I noticed I couldn't assign a lot of the buttons as I could with the MS mouse until I remembered how I solved the problem with that one. I closed / disabled the software for the mouse and could immediately assign the buttons as usual. Not the best solution in the world but it works and the mouse is still fully usable. The responsiveness was a lot better than the MS mouse and worked on a few surfaces I could never use the optical mouse on. Polished surfaces, a 3D effect mousepad and even the arm of my chair. Battery life is very good so far and I like the indicator lights on the side as well as the ability to turn the mouse off to save the battery. It fits well in my hand and tracks well for me despite what I've read in other reviews.
I've not experienced the 'wobble' that others have found, I assume that it's a production issue that Logitech will resolve as time goes on but is something to think about if you're considering buying this mouse. Tracking issues, again I have none but some other reviews here are from people who claim to have them. Again I'm going to say this is probably due to early production batches having problems with Logitech to blame for wanting to get the product out there fast.
The main reason I'm doing this review though is a review by a "Robert Y. Loh" who lists problems such as lifting it from a surface, trying to use it again and experience delays. Well... I've just lifted the mouse off my mousepad, moved it around the room, shaken it and put it back on and it tracked instantly.
Buttons do not work in most applications and aren't recognised in most games? Disable / close the software, all you need are the drivers installed anyway. The *only* application I've used where the buttons (forward and back) aren't recognised is Mozilla Firefox. They work fine in Netscape and IE which will cover almost everyone. I agree the software installed is bloated but again, all you need is the drivers installed and then you can disable it from loading at startup or close it after booting up.
The other thing he says that really annoyed me though....
"I would advise: stay away for the next month or three, while they work the problems out of this one. Anyone posting to the contrary is probably not trying to make full use of their mouse, or otherwise is posting as an agent of Logitech... "
Yes.... it's a huge conspiracy! I'm an agent of Logitech or computer retarded if I post to the contrary huh? Don't you think it's more plausible that while some have problems, others don't? There may well be more people complaining on forums than saying how great the mouse is but that's the same with a lot of things. People complain because they have issues, a lot of people with no problems will never think to post "I have no problems, this mouse works fine for me" so I wouldn't count that.
In my opinion, there are obviously production issues that are causing problems for some but then there are others with no problems. It seems to be pot luck if you get a good mouse or bad one, Logitech need to get onto that fast or risk losing customers and earning a bad reputation. The only thing I'd agree with is that if you're considering buying this mouse, make sure you understand the current issues *some* people are having.
65 WOBBLES
The mouse itself is great, but there are a lot of them going around that do not lay flat on a surface. I got one of them sent to me from Amazon. This is clearly a defect that Logitech has acknowledged, but for some reason they are still being sold.
66 Great Mouser
Bought this mouse last week when my other mouse died. The response on this mouse is somewhat slow to pick up when you begin moving, so you travel more than the mouse actually moves. Outside of that, the radio works fine (I think that is where the slow to initally move comes from), and the laser is much more reliable. My last mouse was MS's optical mouse. I couldn't use it on my table top because there wasn't much in the way of a pattern or anything. I always had to use a pad or something. But this little mouse works on surfaces where the optical wouldn't! This truly is a terrific mouse!
67 Please do not look directly at laser with remaining eyeball
This mouse goes where no mouse has gone before, right onto a black laminate desktop. Tracking is flawless -- I have not experienced the "wobble" problems mentioned by other users. The fit and finish are excellent, and the mouse feels very comfortable in my hand. The whole experience of using it is buttery and luxurious.
I'm still on my first full battery charge, but it's been a couple of days and the battery indicator is still at the top.
One thing about this mouse that is new to me is that the scroll wheel action is very light. You can operate the wheel reliably with only a grazing fingertip. I wouldn't have thought I would like this, but actually it's great. I also find the "cruise" buttons surrounding the scroll wheel to be very useful, but their positioning is somewhat awkward; I still haven't figured out exactly which part of what finger you're supposed to press them with.
As at least one other person has mentioned, the right and left mouse buttons are kind of stiff. They have a pleasant feel, but there's definitely more effort involved than I would prefer.
The thumb operated buttons are a nice idea, but I find that only the center and "back" buttons are within easy reach. I have to twist my hand slightly in an odd way to reach the "forward" button.
Even though there is room for improvement, this is definitely the nicest mouse I've ever used.
UPDATE: Actually, it turns out that one of the buttons on the side of the mouse does not work consistently, so I'm having to send it back for exchange. Apparently my mouse is not without quality control problems after all...
SECOND UPDATE: After about 4 weeks, I'm totally in love with this mouse. My replacement mouse works flawlessly and I have no complaints at all. I would upgrade from from 4 stars to 5, but Amazon doesn't seem to allow this.
68 Good Idea, Bad Mouse
Bought this mouse 2 days ago and don't like it much at all. Laser is great, wireless is great, but latency leaves much to long for. Due to its wireless setup (supposidly), the mouse will only do a maximum rate of 125hz. May not mean a lot to most people but higher rate equals smoother tracking. On Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 which is a slightly older optical mouse you can make this rate as high as 500hz. This is much better and as a result I will be returning my MX 1000 to the store. Better luck next time Logitech. If your thinking game mouse then don't bother with this one. Save yourself some money and get a MX 510 corded mouse.
69 Best mouse I've used to date and I'm a gamer
I've seen all the negatives and read the complaints. I bought this mouse without reading any reviews. However, I started to read the complaint and even visited the logitech support forum... some minor complaints. I started to think I should just return the mouse before even trying it. I'm glad I tried it, because it's the best mouse I've ever used. I upgraded from a Logitech MX500 corded opitcal.
I must be lucky, because my mouse does not have the "wobble" or "weeble" and it does not lag when I pick it up. Maybe it's because I didn't install logitech's drivers, I went with the default plug and play.
I currently play Counter-Strike: Source. With the new laser system, it feels like I can hit any pixel on the screen (using 1280x1024 LCD). I highly recommend this mouse.... don't let few bad user reviews get you (it's getting great professional reviews). Try the mouse out for yourself, it will speak for itself, trust me.
70 The new star of my desktop
Like many other reviewers here I upgraded from the MX700. Unlike some other folks, I do not have driver or "wobble" problems, and the MX1000 seems to be an upgrade over the MX700 in pretty much every way. I especially like the better button placement and the increased size. It even works a little better in fast-paced games, which is great!
The increased size could be a problem for some folks with smaller hands. Average size and up and you should be fine.
The charging cradle is lighter than the MX700's, but I also found it to fit the mouse better. Once in a while I would drop the MX700 in crooked and it wouldn't charge. That doesn't seem to be a problem with the MX1000.
As to value, if you are on a budget I would suggest the MX700, it is still a fantastic mouse--and I took mine to work when I upgraded at home--but if you don't like to compromise on input devices I suggest springing for the MX1000.
71 I love It!
Bought this as a replacement for the mouse that came with my computer- that one was hard to use, hurt my hand as it was big, and did not conform to the shape of my hand. This laser mouse, is , well, fantastic! No cords in the way, it is shaped to fit your hand, and easier to use- I am really pleased with it, and am going to recommend this mouse to my family, who all use the old fashioned corded ones. This thing rolls anywhere- no mousepads, or hanging on to the mousepad as the corded one sticks to it- just a great item!
72 Needs better drivers
I was initially excited about this mouse, and it does work well over ANY surface.
However, it did not work with my existing wireless keyboard from Microsoft. My system would lock up after about 20 minutes. When I removed the mouse driver, it would work fine for about 2 hours before it locked up.
Even when I switched to a non wireless keyboard, the mouse would still lock up the system. It didn't matter whether I used the driver or not.
I scoured the message boards looking for an answer to my problem, and I noticed a lot of other users having different problems also. It seems that Logitech developed a good product, but didn't spend time to make sure that the driver was compatible with XP and other hardware/software.
73 Wait until Logitech gets their act together
Search the internet for "MX1000 problem" before you buy. Many units are not level and wobble when on a flat surface. Many users report issues with lag. The Setpoint driver software has issues. I've contacted Logitech and they expect me to pay for a toll call to get an RMA number, pay for shipping, and then wait 6+ weeks to receive a unit without the wobble. Do yourself a big favor and wait this one out. There's no excuse for Logitech letting this slip through quality control and then expecting the customers to bear the expense. On the plus side, the mouse is very comfortable.
74 Great idea, bad implementation
I am a gamer so I'm very particular about the mice I use. Logitech is a great mouse maker and I'm a happy owner of an MX700. The MX700 was the first mouse that was created that was actually workable in games (including FPS). So, I was excited about a new cordless that used a laser. Anything that improves tracking accuracy is great for gamers.
This is where things go downhill. I bought the MX1000, spent about 5 minutes getting it set up (after fully charging it first) and went to town. On the plus side, the tracking is truely excellent. No question about it. There's nothing out there that's as good and I've tried almost every mouse made. The battery life appears to be also very good. This thing is extremely efficient about controlling its power useage. Ergonomically, it is also very nice.
Unfortunately, it has two major problems:
1) the right mouse button is too stiff and even caused me hand strain in a game where you have to use the right mouse button a lot. This may be specific to my particular sample, but it's something to watch for since if there's one like that, there's probably more.
2) the mouse wobbles. It's like a weeble...it wobbles but it never falls down. I'm not kidding. I even tried shifting the weight in my hand to compensate but it still wobbled. I tried it on 3 completely surfaces and got the same result each time. This is simply unacceptable and completely invalidates its use for gaming. I wouldn't even use it for productivity apps...it's that annoying.
Honestly, I can't see how this mouse made it out of the prototype stage with the wobble problem. Using it for 10 seconds would make this apparent. Sadly, my dream mouse must wait until Logitech comes out with it's next iteration (whenever that is). Until then I'll stick with my trusty MX700.
I would have given this mouse 1 star but the excellent tracking buys it 2 stars.
75 Best Mouse I've ever used
I am extremely happy with this mouse. I had the MX700 for quite some time, but it never worked quite right on my cheapo, all-white, laminate Ikea desktop. I typically had to lightly pound the MX700 on the desktop to wake it up. And the pointer frequently gave out as I moved it across my screen, and I then had to lightly pound it again. I typically had the same experience with other optical mice from both MS and Logitech.
The MX1000 is a completely different beast. It jumps alive the moment I touch it, the pointer moves when I want it to, and all other features are quite responsive.
I am not a gamer, so I can't help you there (though I can really whup up on Solitaire). I am a simple telecom real estate consultant. I frequently use graphic design programs to render drawings for my clients, so I do need some level of accuracy. This mouse has been perfect for that.
The battery life has been outstanding. I gave it a full charge when I first got it, and didn't have to re-charge for almost two weeks. I am still on my second charge (though I have been travelling a lot recently), and it still shows no sign of diminishing.
My only gripe with this mouse is that I sometimes use it with my left hand. I have had to disable the buttons on the left side of the mouse, but they are buttons I never used anyway.
I have not attempted to use the mouse without the Setpoint program, so I can't help you there, either.
I highly recommend this mouse if you want one that works when and how you want it to. It far surpasses anything else I've used.
76 Best mouse I have used so far
After just 30 minutes of using this mouse, I knew it was leagues ahead of my old mouse. The size, ergonomics, and overall feeling of this mouse is just superb. Everything is quick and responsive, and you are comfortable to boot while you are clicking away, which is a necessity because of how long you actually use the mouse. This mouse fits my hand like a glove.
The application switch button is very handy, and I have used it countless times already. The cruise scrolling buttons are awesome too, I don't have to go over to the scroll bar at all anymore. If I want to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page with the mouse, I just "cruise" down there. The actual scroll wheel is a dream to spin, and makes virtually no noise at all. Very smooth scrolling. The side scrolling also comes in handy quite a bit, especially if you are viewing large pictures on the web somewhere.
It shuts itself practically off after about 7 seconds of inactivity, in which the battery LEDs go off. As soon as you move it, it snaps back to attention, with no lag at all. If you leave for a few days, you can also shut it off totally via an on/off switch. Charging it takes just minutes.
All in all, this is one hell of a mouse. The best I have used in fact. Well worth the money, and if you have never used a wireless optical mouse, the difference between a ball mouse and this laser mouse is astounding.
77 Best mouse ever
I upgraded from a MX700 (2nd best mouse EVER) and I love this mouse. I hear there a problems assigning the extra buttons in games but I'm sure you can do this by changing to buttons to execute keyboard shortcuts.
BESIDES THAT, ERGONOMICS AND PRECISION ARE ***PERFECT***. Also the charger and battery indicator are great. This mouse is VERY easy to pick up during fast paced games.
The only complaint I have is the forward and back buttons are a bit harder to click than on the MX700.
78 A different opinion
I just upgraded from an MX 900 to the the MX 1000 and I have no complaints whatsoever...in fact I'm elated with my purchase. I find this new mouse to be exceptionally responsive and precise. I find no problems with sensitivity and my mouse has a range that is more than an adequate. (After reading the review below I tested my mouse by placing it on top of my TV which sets several feet away from my computer desk and it worked as if the mouse was scurrying away only inches from the receiver....The reviewer below must have some sort of interference problem, which I do not, despite the mouse receiver sitting right next to a speaker and my monitor). Truly I was hesistant to upgrade my mouse but I have no regrets....One other noticeable improvement is the instant recognition and responsiveness of the mouse upon booting up my computer which was an issue for me with my MX 900 bluetooth mouse which was not always recognized upon turning on my computer and this was a major pain in the a$$. This mouse is a tad expensive but certainly the best I have ever used. I have had no problems with the software included with the mouse. A great product or else I am extraordinarily lucky.
79 MX 1000 A Good Idea Poorly Done
As a happy owner of a Logitech MX900, I thought that the upgrade to the MX1000 would be a no brainer. So I purchased one.
There are pluses in the MX1000 over the MX900. It has a better fit in the hand, there is a battery status indicator on the MX1000 whereas the MX 900 does not have this feature. (You have to use the on screen battery indicator.) But there is also a lot not to like about the MX1000.
The mouse itself does feel better than the MX900, but the receiver is flimsy and much lighter than the MX900 reciever making it less stable. The buttons are super-sensitive and easily clicked by mistake. It would be good to have the ability to turn off certain buttons but there is no way that I could find to turn them off. (You can unassign them, but then the SetPoint application interrupts your work asking you to reassign the buttons should you happen to accidently click an unassigned button.)
The cursor flies to the top of the screen without warning, selects text without warning. In short the mouse is so smart that it outsmarts itself and its user at times. Some of this may be due to my big hand, or even cockpit problems. But there is no way to know because Logitech provides no on line or web support for the product.
The mouse has awful range. It works on my computer desk, but refuses to work on my mouse shelf 4 inches below the desk. Moving the reciever unit around makes no difference. The MX900 is quite happy on my desk or on the mouse shelf.
I removed the MX 1000 and have replaced it with my trusty MX 900. I am a happy camper again!
80 Great natural fitting mouse
I'm a owner of the older MX700 model and recently got the MX1000. I can't say the MX1000 is a quantum leap over the 700, in fact the forward button near the thumb took a little use to, but once my hand unlearned the 700 and learned the new form, it felt like a glove. It's great that the new mouse now has the tilt wheel like the MS Wireless Intellimouse Explorer. In terms of look, I actually think the MX700 looks cooler than the MX1000, perhaps they will come up with newer color scheme later on in the release.
The biggest improvement in the mouse besides the form factor is the position/rearrangements of the buttons on hand, especially the task switcher button near the thumb. It's so much more logically placed now that I 'actually' use it where as in MX700, I often forgot about the tiny button and uses good old <alt-tab> key.
The battery life, I also noticed has greatly improved, I believe because it's got a more intelligent power management system. I often see the power indicator goes dark after a few moments of inactivities, but as soon as I start moving the mouse again, the indicator goes back on instantly.
I also agree with some of the reviewer that the charge base is now much more forgiving in terms of catching the mouse in place. In the old MX700, I often find the mouse's IR light blinking after situating the mouse on the charge base because it was slightly off position. I have yet been able to position the MX1000 wrong in the base.
All this shows me that Logitech take their mouse really seriously and obviously has taken heart to many of the user's feedbacks and made a better mouse...ah...trap. :-)
Lastly, I have never encountered any wobbling or skipping problems with my mouse no matter how hard I try, so perhaps someone got a lemon or something.
It's 5 stars for me. Go out and get one if you love Logitech mouse.
81 A Great Mouse - for most people!
I have been using a Logitech MX700 mouse for a few years now (since the day they were first sold) and I love it. I now love my MX1000 even more!!
Up front: If you are an EXTREME gamer or relying on this for many hours of professional photo editing - other specialized mice may better suit your needs. Wired opticals usually work best for intense games and very small, light mice are best for hours of fine photo editing. (The MX1000 is the same weight as the MX700 but 6oz is a lot of mass to push around all day pixel-by-pixel editing photos even thought the MX1000 has bigger slide pads on the base and moves more easily than the MX700.) And by the way, mice are easy to change. I have on occasion put on a $10 1oz mouse just for a day to do 10 hours of photo restoration.
As for the MX1000 in general:
Great feel, super responsive, good placement of features (for a right-hander). IF you are coming from a mouse like the MX700 then this feels "turbocharged". You will LOVE IT! 21 day battery, no annoying red light, SMOOTH buttons, multiple scroll buttons, etc.
I waited 3 weeks after they came out to buy mine afer hearing a lot of mixed press on this mouse but finally just took the plunge. Very glad that I did. I spend a lot of time on the computer and this is making my life a lot easier. I feel like a child that just got a new toy for Christmas. Few pieces of computer hardware make me feel that way.
82 This mouse works perfectly for me
I have had the MX1000 for over a week now and I find it to be the best mouse I have ever used. My old MS optical and Logitech optical would sometimes lag, especially if I let the mouse set unused for a minute while I read a news article or something. This one reacts instantly and accurately. To answer some critical comments let me say this. I have used my mouse on wood, glass, ceramic tile and cloth. It worked. If you have a problem with a glass topped desk put a piece of paper under the portion of the glass where the mouse will be used. If you are worried about the battery dying, the mouse and the battery are guarenteed for 3 years. Battery life is 3 weeks if you never put it in the charger/base. Even then a dead mouse will charge enough in 10 minutes to last all day. The reason it has a charger plug in addition to a USB connection is that a USB port only provides 1/2 Amp of power. This is not enough to charge the battery as quickly as you would want. The mouse has battery level indicators so you will always know if it ever gets low. Mine hasen't read less than full in a week of 12 hour a day operation. I am not a big Gamer so I don't know if the mouse will work in all games but it works on the few that I play. I have been able to reprogram the mouse buttons to do everything the keyboard does including the F keys.
83 First Best mouse ever used
Hello world.. i just got the mx1000 today and i have been inlove with the mx 700. i was thinking gee a mouse really cant get no better then this (mx700) .. i also thought this mouse is so easy to use for everything its just access at the finger tips.. and its also great for playing pc gaming.. nice a nd smoother movement.. then as i was in a chatroom for a game. someoen said sometihgn about the mx1000.. i was liek WHAT!!! what the hell is the mx 1000. then i went to the logitech website and saw.. at that moment my expression was like a 10 year old boy on christmas... with its new design for the mosue and the charging station and a new on off button makes it a million times better then that mx somethin..lol.. i have been using loigtech products for a long time now and they never fail with any mouse maybe a few other prodcuts.lol which we all know.. but this mouse is hot stylish and easy to use makes anything you do online way better. well almsot anything.. its so quick... well take thsi review helpful even if you got confused.. im just to excited.. this mosue is the shizzzznit
84 Mouse wobbles like an old table; No back/forward in Mozilla
When using the mouse on any hard surface, the mouse wobles back and forth. Apparantly, this is a widespread problem since there is a lengthy discussion on Logitech's own support forums regarding the issue.
Also, the back and forward buttons do not work in the Mozilla web browser.
I highly recommend the MX700 over this mouse.
85 Pleasantly Surprised
Up until now, I've always used Microsoft mice (and wired ones, at that). I've been trying to replace my old Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer because it was generating spurious mouse-clicks. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a local, wired, version of that mouse. So, in desperation, I bought this Logitech MX1000 Laser Cordless Mouse. I was very surprised that I liked it. It's about the same size and heft as my old Intellimouse, and I don't have to mess with a cord. Its tracking seems to be dead on. I've tested it on my old, black, somewhat fuzzy mouse pad, various parts of my desk, different types of paper, and my tummy. It's worked perfectly in all cases. The only things I can characterize as being negative are that 1) I had to remap the Back and Forward buttons to ALT+Left Arrow and ALT+Right Arrow so that those buttons would work properly in Mozilla Firefox (my browser), and 2) I wish the charging base got its power via the USB connection instead of from yet another power transformer.
After another reviewer mentioned it here, I did notice that the "scrolling focus" behaves differently in different applications. In my case, Internet browsing is probably where I'd see that the most. But, Mozilla Firefox behaves "properly." So, I'm ok. Since this behavior depends on the application, I'm guessing that it's a difference in how the applications are coded and not something to do with the mouse. Purely conjecture, though.
Again, surprisingly, I highly recommend this mouse.
86 Save your cash..
I've been using this for several days. Very disappointing. When tracking on a slightly frayed destop blotter, the cursor wobbles back and forth as if being viewed through water in motion. It does fine on smoother surfaces but it's odd that my MX700 works flawlessly on the blotter and other surfaces. Tracking speed is subjectively no different than my MX700. Bottom line, unless the beefier form factor of the MX1000 is something you have to have, save your money and buy the MX700.
87 Wait until they have completed development
I have tested the MX1000 for ten days, and I deeply regret having spent money on it. Having used a MX700 for a long time, I noticed some serious flaws (mostly driver-related) which have led me to dump the MX1000 in favor of my old MX700:
What makes the MX1000 totally unusable for me is a scroll wheel problem under Logitech SetPoint v2.11:
When working in Windows Explorer (or Internet Explorer or most other double-pane programs) with a Folders pane and a Files pane visible, the scroll wheel ALWAYS only operates in the "active" pane where the selection bar is, also when the mouse pointer is located (or pointing) on the other pane. To change "scroll focus", it is necessary to click in the pane that should scroll and activate it (thus losing the previous selection or even inadvertently initiating an undesired action), or to use the scroll bar which would be silly because that is what the scroll wheel is for!
When working in a double-pane window (such as, e.g., a split window in MS Word) or in multiple document windows within one application, scrolling also only takes place in the currently activated window, independently from the position of the mouse pointer!
(This means you have to click inside the desired window to use the scroll wheel at all, thus unavoidably losing insertion point location or selection!)
To productively use the trackball in a work environment, the current behavior is unacceptable. Have you ever tried to scroll through multi-window lists? Or worked on a large monitor in MS Word with three or more active document windows? Or in a split window in Excel? Who ever has will easily understand that the scrolling behavior I am talking about is indispensable and that the current "design" is not only unintuitive, but counter-productive and thus unacceptable.
The scroll wheel should operate in a logical and intuitive way in the pane the mouse pointer is pointing at (NOT necessarily clicked at); i.e., if just pointing/moving over the Folders pane and using the scroll wheel, this pane should scroll (without getting activated); if pointing over the Files pane, that one should scroll.
BTW, it seems some software companies have recognized the general problem and solved it on their own: E.g., Adobe: in Acrobat, scrolling is just as it should be (try it with a Bookmarks or Pages pane open), and also in Photoshop's file browser (which has multiple lists and sub-windows); also in V-COM PowerDesk and TrackerV3 v3.60.
I have sent a bug report to Logitech and received an arrogant response that boils down to "It's not a bug, it's a feature"! That is unacceptable.
There are some other minor problems (double-click does not work properly, wheel button activation is far too hard, etc.), but this faulty scroll wheel behavior is the reason why I will not use the MX1000 and went back to my old MX700 (running under MouseWare v9.73 which is just perfect - don't use any later version!).
88 Response to Gamers
I wanted to respond to T. Campbell's excellent comments. You'll see my original response below, where I heaped praises on this mouse. I'll acknowledge the delay issues experienced by T. Campbell and others. After reading T. Cambell's review, I tried my best to get my MX1000 mouse to show the delay, but I couldn't. I picked my mouse up, moved it around, and set it back down and moved it, and the mouse pointer moved instantly without any delay at all. If there was a micro-second of delay, I couldn't see it. Again, I'm not a gamer, and it could show up if I were playing a game, but after all my efforts, I couldn't get my mouse to delay, after trying many times. I also tried the mouse on a yellow legal pad, with no problems.
I'll admit many folks have experienced the delay issue; OTOH many folks have had no delays. I still don't know whether there are merely bad mice out there, or whether its an internal issue. I would think that if it were an internal issue with the laser, everyone would experience the same problems. I read on another message board that this may be a firmware issue that Logitech is working to correct. Hopefully that will be the case, so even heavy duty gamers can enjoy this mouse as much as I am enjoying it.

89 A driver bug makes it unusable with a KVM switch
Switching between computers will cause the mouse wheel and extra buttons to fail until the computer is put into suspend mode and resumed. This is caused by a (probably simple) bug in the mouse driver, but rather than fix the problem Logitech just says they don't support KVM switches. Switching to a standard ps/2 mouse driver takes care of the wheel problem, but you won't have use of the extra buttons or side scroll. My impression is that Logitech is too big to care about their customers.
90 Great Mouse! but...
I'm a big fan of logitech mice. In fact I own many different logitech mice. MX 1000, MX510, MX500, Mouse Man Dual Optical and so on. But this doesn't make me an expert on logitech mice. This is only my option, and my experienced with the mx1000 in comparison to other mx mice.
pros:
12 bind-able triggers that's two more then the mx500 and the 510.
Better layout of buttons then the mx 500 or 510
No red under glow
quick recharging time
wireless
on and off switch, reset button
led battery level indicator
responsive
reads on some wood surfaces better then the mx500
cons:
heaver then a corded mouse
to replace the rechargeable battery one must take apart the mouse
picky compared to the mx510
wireless is not blue tooth
sensors slightly to the left side of the mouse
IMPORTANT: picking up the mouse, and then putting the mouse down in a new location can cause PROBLEMS. Problem in the form of a delay. This is a huge problem for gamers.
The new angle of the optic sensor, and the use of a lazier dose allow for better reading on some surfaces. The lazier being more efficient then an led allows for longer battery life, and the red dot is a tangible point that the sensor can focus on, Making it easer for the sensor to track movement. Because of this improvement logitech can now use a smaller read area, while giving a boost in accuracy. Allowing them to sample images at a faster rate with less over head then the mx510.
By no mean is this new technology perfect. I have found that even thought this mouse dose read on some surfaces better then the mx 500 or 510. It also fails to read some surfaces. Such as a yellow legal pad, used in many business. And the mx500 can read as well on many of those surfaces, and the mx 510 will read on many of those surfaces even better.
And then there the pick up delay. Every time the mouse is picked up, and then put down it may take a few seconds for the mouse to start reading again. This can cause delayed reactions in gaming. This isn't some thing noticeable, unless your a gamer player, and play allot of games. Even then many people don't relies it's the mouse. This isn't some thing you'll notice browsing a web site, or working in photo shop.
So witch mouse is best for who?
MX500 for most gamer is perfect, it read well, good dpi, but no so sensitive that you'll have to turn down the mouse to use it.
the mx 510 is a great mouse for people who have large screen, use projectors, or have a hard to read muse surface. Or people who just want a cool paint job.
MX1000 is a grate wireless mouse, with sleek curves and fast recharge time. Because it lacks blue tooth this isn't the mouse for portable computers. Because of 5 to 10 second lag that can happen when picking up and putting down this mouse. I wouldn't reconvened it for serious gamers. But for the idle player, web designer, people who just want a wireless mouse, graphic designer, video editors this is a great mouse.
91 Replaced my MX700
Uninstalled Logitech's mouseware, installed Logitech SetPoint, no problems. I tried to force my MX1000 to repeat some of the problems I've read about and havent been able to. The problems some people are reporting with the mouse's buttons not responding in games....the solution is simple. For example, in Battlefield 1942, if the default button assignment for entering/exiting a vehicle is "E", then you simply go into the SetPoint properties and change the button properties to "key stroke" and hit "E". Sure it changes what the mouse does when not gaming, but if youre using a mouse like this to get the max "on the fly" commands, then you probably really dont care if you have to click the "back" button in your internet browser instead. Having said that, the feel of the mouse is great, the tumb recess is a godsend (unlike the mx700), the battery can go for days on end without being recharged (on day 3 now), and it's super sensetive. The battery level leds are a nice touch, and it scrolls left and right too. What I don't like about it is the fact that the scroll wheel has to be pushed down on harder than the MX700, and the scroll wheel clicks arent as firm or defenative as the MX700. Expensive, but a worthy replacement. By the way, cordless mice are fine for gaming. I used my MX700 for massive gaming since the first week it came out, no problems.
92 Love this Mouse
After reading various reviews about this mouse, and seeing some people having problems with it, particularly gamers, I was anxious for my MX1000 to arrive. Would it be one of the devil mice, with problems people were complaining of, or would it be one of the angel mice, about which others issued glowing reports?
I received my laser mouse and last night opened it . . . and I now love it! So far I've not detected any of the delays reported about this mouse. And mine is steady as a rock, without any wobble, as reported by some. To me this is the most comfortable mouse I've ever used. I love it way it fits my hand perfectly, with the extra space for the thumb rest. The buttons seem to be well located, and easy to use. The wireless feature is a dream--from the moment I fired it up, it's worked perfectly, and I haven't had to hit the reset button at all. After a few seconds of inactivity, the mouse goes to sleep to save the battery, but all it takes to wake it up is to put my hand on it, and it takes off without any delay. The receiver works a fairly long way from the mouse--I've got it about 5 feet away from the mouse now and it works like a charm. I also love the fact that I can set the mouse in the recharging base and it fits perfectly without any fiddling with it to get it to connect with the recharger--you just set it in the base and that's that.
I'm not a gamer, and will use my mouse for general office work. Therefore, even if my mouse had the delay some have talked about, it wouldn't affect me. However, on my mouse I've tried various ways of picking up the mouse and setting it back down to see if I could create a delay, and I've not been able to do it. So if there is a delay, I couldn't find it. While I understand several gamers have reported the delay in their mice, I haven't seen it. So I don't know whether the delay is as a result of the laser technology, and is not a defect, or whether some just got hold of a defective mouse.
Bottom line--I love this mouse and would highly recommend it to others, particularly those of you who are not serious gamers. For those of you who are serious gamers, I'd suggest you find a store like CompUsa that has the mouse on display, so you can try it out with movements you normally use in your games, to see if the delay issue is there and if so, whether it affects the way you propose to use it for games.
I recognize this mouse is the first laser mouse, and could have issues, but I've not seen any for me. If you are a serious gamer, you may want to wait a while to see what develops and if there is a problem, see if Logitech can issue a patch. If you are not a serious gamer, I'd highly recommend this mouse to you!

93 Accurate but heavy
I got this mouse to replace a Microsoft Wheel Mouse optical that didn't track well on my wooden desk surface. On the plus side, the Logitech mouse is every bit as sensitive and accurate as they claim it is. On the same surface that gave traditional optical mice fits, it tracks smoothly and hyper-accurately. For accuracy I'd give it a perfect 5 star score.
But there are a couple of drawbacks. First, it's incredibly heavy for a mouse. My old wired optical mouse weighed only 3 ounces. This bruiser weighs 6.5 ounces. That doesn't sound like much, but repetitive motion injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis can be affected by tiny differences in the force needed to press keys, or move mice. That's not to say it doesn't move easily; the glide pads on the bottom let it move easily and fluidly with very little "stiction." But it's going to take me a long time to adjust to pushing it around.
Second, it's heavily contoured for right-handed people. I'm left-handed; I can use the mouse with my right hand, so this isn't a deal-breaker for me, but dedicated southpaws beware: this isn't the mouse for you.
Back to the positives: the power saving feature works seamlessly. If the mouse is inactive for a couple of seconds, it goes into a sleep mode. But when you move it, it wakes up instantly with no perceptable lag. The wireless connection is also lag-free.
This is a MAJOR step forward in terms of accuracy and tracking. If you've ever been annoyed by a mouse that was jumpy or didn't track well, you should consider this mouse. If you're in the market for a cordless mouse, and you're right-handed, and you don't mind a mouse that is a bit heavy, you won't go wrong with this mouse.
If you're a lefty, or have any sort of repetitive motion wrist problem, I'd say skip this one.
94 Very Pleased
I got my new Logitech MX 1000 Laser mouse and I am very happy with it. Sure is fast. It has alot of nice features that are worth having a look at. I love Logitech products. I have owned several items from them and have not been disappointed. I would buy from them again.
95 A wonderful investment, if you can spare the cash.
I've been using Logitech and Microsoft optical mice for over three years now and I haven't had alot of bad to say about most of the products I've used. The only problems I've ever had was with my Logitech Mouseman Dual Optical; the cursor was very jumpy and the mouse was picky about its mousing surface.
I switched over from a wired Microsoft Intellimouse about 8 months ago to a Logitech MX700. It wasn't because I wasn't pleased with its performance, I was simply tired of the cord always getting caught and having to pull it. I actually replaced an Intellimouse because the wire was damaged from all the pulling. After I made the switch, I have to say that I was very pleased with the wireless performance of the MX700.
I was however not elated. The MX700 was pretty heavy and once and a while the cursor would still jump, once every other day or so. I also was annoyed at having to recharge my mouse every 3 days; I actually got into the habit of charging it for 20 minutes every day which worked fine. When I saw that the MX1000 had come out and claimed to fix all these problems I got pretty excited.
To say the least, I'd say the MX1000 has lived up to the expectations. I've been using it for just under a week now and I think all of the problems I've mentioned with the MX700 have been fixed in Logitechs newest product. The MX1000 is lighter, if only moderately so, but it has larger glide pads so it glides as good as my super light Intellimouse did. Thanks to the lithium Ion battery, after six days of use my battery meter is still full. There also hasn't been any problems with the pointer jumping around and the movement is much more crisp than the MX700. A great feature they added to the MX1000 is an on/off switch on the bottom. I won't try to appeal to people who say that wireless has lag where wires don't because Logitech has proved that this isn't the case, especially with the MX1000.
If you can afford it, the MX1000 is a great investment for anyone who uses a computer for many hours of the day, cubical lords and hardcore gamers alike.
96 Rushed to Production
Numerous problems plague this mouse. Lift it from your surface and try to mouse again and experience delays. Buttons do not work in most applications, and are not recognized in almost any games. They are also trying to replace their "MouseWare" drivers with a new 'SetPoint' software, with a tremendous reduction in features (less than 1/2 the button assignment options) and an incredible bloat (~17MB instead of 2-3MB).
I would advise: stay away for the next month or three, while they work the problems out of this one. Anyone posting to the contrary is probably not trying to make full use of their mouse, or otherwise is posting as an agent of Logitech...

97 Sensitive, responsive, comfortable, but still has issues
This was my first time buying a cordless mouse, and I have to say that I am satisfied with it.
Form factor: The mouse is quite large, which might be a problem for those with small hands or who like small mice, but I like the feel. It is understanably heavier than my corded mouse, but not as heavy as I thought it would be, given it has a rechargable battery in it that is supposed to last over 12 hours. One of the few things I didn't like is that the chargable base is also the wireless receiver. I think a smaller adapter that some wireless mice use would be better, leaving the charger to be placed in any position needed (you are not supposed to put it near any electronic devices, or it will interfere with the reception).
Performance: The mouse is very sensitive, very small movements are captured perfectly on many surfaces my LED optical mouse would not work well on. I can whip the pointer all around the screen with no loss or error, which is what the LED mice did poorest with, I think. I have no complaints at all, and I believe their claim that it is 20x better than an LED mouse. The mouse kicks off after a few seconds of inactivity, but comes back instantly upon movement, without having to move the mouse around for a second before it turns back on.
Other: The driver/application suite that they bundle with the mouse (SetPoint) is completely useless in my opinion. The only thing they really are needed for is to map the application button on the left side. The HID drivers in windows XP worked just fine, and I happen to think that the windows mouse sensitivity settings are better. I also wish they wouldn't have bothered with the little metal sticker on the front, it comes off way too easily... they should have just kept the bottom-front smooth.
Lastly, I had to return my first mouse because of some bug that made it jump up about 1 inch on the screen when I would move the mouse inside menus, in a list of links, or anything else that would make the mouse select different things quickly while moving upward. I tried it on many machines in different locations, and it did the same thing. The second mouse has worked fine for the 2 hours I have been using it thus far. I wonder if this will be a reoccuring bug, or if it was just a fluke...
Because I had to return it once, and the other small issues I had, this mouse was very close to getting 3 stars for me, but because it works well for what I need (I do very little gaming anymore) and seems to outperform my other mouse which I loved, I think it deserves 4.
98 Not a Gaming Mouse???? DUH!!!!
This is a good mouse for most applications, but not gaming. Anyone looking for a top notch mouse upgrade needs to consider some things before purchasing:
First, if you are a gamer...don't go cordless. Corded mice are better and none is better than the logitech MX510. The people reviewing this mouse with a lower rating because it sucks on games should know that all cordless mice suck on games. It's a fact that's been known for quite some time now. Also, keep in mind that cordless mice are heavier and bulkier because they contain batteries. If you are a gamer looking for the best available mouse for gaming applications, buy the mx510. If you do other applications besides gaming and have your heart set on cordless...buy this mouse.
99 Good product but a not yet there
I was in the hunt for a wireless mouse for my gaming needs after the Logitech ifeel mouse died out on me, after looking at the features of all the wireless mice available and also curious because of this new technology I went ahead and bought this and boy, need I tell you I am disappointed with it. I needed the mouse for my games, not some casual games but the likes of doom 3, Farcry, etc, so I didnt even bother testing the mouse's performance with day to day mundane activities which can be performed with an ordinary scroll mouse for $1. For the latest games, this mouse is virtually useless; like another reviewer said the games dont even recognize the other buttons on the mouse so u r stuck with playing with just ur std mouse buttons, so what do u do with the rest of the buttons, u can send them back to logitech for now or u can map them to stupid tasks like opening a browser, playing winamp or any other absolutely geeky, practically stupid tasks. So if u r a gamer u would be better off picking up the MX900 which is more bang for bucks than this futuristic mouse.
100 AWESOME MOUSE!
I can't say enough about this mouse. I have used a variety of different optical mice over the past 4 years from the likes of Kensington, Logitech and Microsoft and none of them can compare to the MX1000. I am visual designer and a casual gamer and I have not experienced any of the issues that the other two reviewers have mentioned. I have found it to be so much more responsive and accurate than any of my previous optical mice. So why the 4 stars instead of 5? Well, I am concerned about the life of the lithium-ion battery inside of the mouse and the lack of access to it. The manual did not indicate if it is accessible or replaceable. Other than that I have absolutely no complaints.
