Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002, Standard Edition is the latest version of Microsoft's highly realistic aviation simulation--the top-selling PC flight simulation ever produced.
FS 2002 introduces many exciting features, including interactive air traffic control (ATC) and auto-generated scenery, plus challenging new aircraft and stunning visual enhancements that truly make
Flight Simulator 2002, Standard Edition "as real as it gets."
Flight Simulator 2002, Standard Edition includes a wide variety of aircraft for you to fly--from a new Cessna 208 Caravan floatplane to the Boeing 747-400 jumbo jet. You can splash down in a lake, hover in the Bell 206B JetRanger III helicopter, practice aerobatics in the Extra 300S, or fly like a famous World War II fighter ace in a Sopwith Camel. FS 2002 Standard includes a total of 12 aircraft.
The most dramatic new features common to both the standard and pro editions are the interactive air traffic control system, crowded skies, and auto-generated scenery.
The interactive air traffic control feature adds a new dimension to Flight Simulator. Now you can ask for takeoff clearance, get vectors for an instrument approach, and hear other traffic as you fly. In fact, the "other traffic" is itself a new feature: a new artificial intelligence system generates air traffic around and between airports.
It'll be hard to pay attention to the air traffic, however, as the scenery in FS 2002 is so attractive. As you fly above cities, towns, farmland, and dramatic landscapes, Flight Simulator adds buildings and vegetation appropriate to the terrain below. Office buildings, factories, homes, farmhouses, and trees smoothly blend in on the horizon and fill the entire area with detail that adds unprecedented depth and reality to the game.
Other features include more than 21,000 airports, multiplayer capability, improved weather effects, a moving map and GPS system, in-depth flight analysis, and more.
1 Fly, Baby Fly
You all know, great game, great graphics, etc. This review is THE CONS.
1.Sometimes you can't move your plane as soon as you start and you have to restart the flight because in 2 seconds, the engine broke down.
2. Many geographical errors. The Statue of Liberty isn't there. Microsoft put to much work in details.
3. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGG load times.
2 -Junior Pilot
- To Fly is all i have wanted since i was little and game was right for me. Last christmas i got this simulaor and a sidewinder joystick. This game is so real i find myself yelling in my room because im doing barrel rolls in the extra. i play this simulator every day when i get home from school till i go to bed.You never will get tired of this simulator
There are so many things to do on this simulator including:
-Select a flight-where you choose a flight already made.
-Create a flight-you can choose your own plane, choose anywhere in the world you would like to fly and all the conditions of the flight
-Learn to fly-take lessons from instructor,Rod Dimacho, and earn your private, instrument, commercial, and airline transport Licenses.
-Multiplayer- Fly with other aviators online
-Library- You do not go to the local bookstore anymore! Get your charts, Ground school handbooks, and many others.
The only bad thing about this simulator is that the graphics arent the best. You may be thinking that if you fly off in your town that you can see your house but thats not true. Also you cant get the exitement of crashing out of this simulator, all it does is stick the plane in the ground and if you do not want to crash just turn that setting off and you will just bounce off things.
If you dont have enough money tot ake lesson or you just want to practice this simulator is for you.My uncle is a pilot and he is amazed on how i can fly just by playing this simulator.
Hope you liked my review!
3 could have been better......................................
The only reason I gave this game 4 stars is because i love airplanes. But there are some things about this that are just bad. for instance, when you go and try to taxi to the gate, GUESS WHAT?? There is no GATE!!!! Also the air traffic control is a little difficult to understand at first. AND the buildings suck on this game. ANd i go to put on maximum traffic and i go to land at LAX( one of the biggist airports)and there is like 1 or two planes at the airport, I mean what is that??? And landing is one of the hardest parts of this game. I come down at like 138 knots and roll of the runwway. The last thing about this game is that taxing is stupid. A real pilot wants to just go at a steady speed down the taxi way but instead i got to power up and then power down and then power up and the power down. [...]
4 This game flies high!
The avionics are great! I can takeoff, fly, and land in Hundreds of
airports around the world. It has giant skyscrapers such as the Sears Tower of the Gateway Arch. Fly NINE different aircraft, NINE!
I love this game!
The only thing is that my computer is kind of slow and freezes the game after about 15 minutes.
I LOVE THIS GAME

6 flight simulator 2002
flight simulator 2002 is a fantastic game with great features and scenery. When I first got this game I found it quite hard in the fog or thunder clouds but after going to tuturial mode helped me a lot. Another thing that I liked about it is the sound and looks of the planes.
7 Not fun
Flight Simulator 2002 is a good game but when you fly the planes you do nothing. You just end up crashing because theres nothing to do in the game. One plane wont even get off the ground. I dont know why they put that plane in the game.
8 Excellent Rebate turnaround
I must say, short of Circuit City rebates, this is the fastest rebate I have ever seen - check received within a month of posting the rebate. Seems like other buyers have had similar experience with rebates directly from Microsoft.
Although Amazon does not provide the $20 rebate form, download it from Microsoft website, print both the front and rear sides on the same piece of paper - it works. Just a warning though, the forms is maddeningly small. I thus included another normal paper with the same information written in normal size.
This review is mainly about the rebate. The product itself is one of the best in its class but I have not tested it exhaustively yet. I have upgraded from Flight Simulator 2000, which was good - this one is even better for the limited things that I have tried so far.
9 Fun, but System Requirements MUST be updated
I had a lot of fun with the realistic graphics, but it takes up so much disk space so it often lagged. It was really slow..
When I was switching computers to a Windows XP Home Edition, it crashed the machine, despite it saying that it is compatible with XP. So please, Microsoft, make a public announcement that it isn't compatible.
I miss so dearly playing this game. It is just so much fun!
10 great sim for P4 owners.
You wake up at the controls of a small airplane. You're engine is already humming, but the plane isn't moving - must be those parking brakes. You're parked at the back of a runway of a small airfield with just one runway. Off in the distance, a huge dark tower looms, piercing the sky. What could just be the start of a Steven King novel or an episode of "Twilight Zone" is just the latest and prettiest edition of Microsoft Flight Simulator. Those who've flown older versions of MSFS will know what to expect - better graphics and sound, a database of airports and airspace, more included aircraft, better looking aircraft for those you can add-on (using 3rd party files) and a customizable editor that allows you to choose where, when and how you will go, and what color 747 or F-16 will get you there. FS2002 also continues MS's tradition of incorporating features of 3rd party add-on software offered on older versions of FS. FS2002 comes with a speaking interactive ATC (though others had "added" ATC years ago) to go along with all of those verbal lessons (FS2002, like FS2000, comes with a speaking flight instructor, though the new one seems as prone to getting hung-up as the old one). The tweaked graphics engine seems to allow for more realistic texturing of airplanes (from the glossy finish of a freshly built Mustang to the flat black of an SR-71), and more acceptable realistic movement of animated flight-control surfaces, flaps and landing gear. In addition to exteriors, panels and flight models, add-on aircraft now have "effects" (contrails, afterburner). Ground texture is also improved over FS2000, making for much more convincing low-level flight. Instead of the stiff blue of the water in older versions of FS, rivers, seas and oceans have waves in FS2002, probably to highlight the inclusion of seaplanes.
One annoying detail - long load times. This is compounded by the fact that you can only change one aspect of a flight at a time (time of day, location, weather), requiring the program to reload the flight each time.
While nothing will rock your socks off in FS2002, it's a solid and enjoyable sim that allows itself to be pretty much what the individual user wants it to - from an entry-level sim to a challenging one. I ran this program smoothly on my P4 (2ghz) w/WinXP & a Geforece3 card. I had planned to hold off on FS2002 since I already had FS2000, but I'm glad I got it nevertheless.
11 Just Ordered 2004
Great program, but I am looking forward to the dual monitor support in the 2004 version. Definitely plan on getting something to fly your plane with besides the keyboard. It is hard to beat at this price. (...)
12 Great! As good as MS FS2004. Excellent experiences!
If you run out and get this program thinking your getting a game your wrong. This is a flight Simulator and that is what you get. If your a pilot or an aspiring pilot and want to get some practice flying or try out what it takes to fly an aircraft this is a good way to find out. I've run this program on my PIII 1.1 GHZ WIN-XP laptop with 512 MB ram and 32 MB graphics card as well as a Celeron 1.2 GHz 256 MB ram and integrated 11 MB graphics and it has performed well on both systems. Have even flown between the two systems over my home lan with great ease. This program is much better with a flight stick and is rather difficult to attempt with a keyboard. I use a MS Sidewinder force feedback 2 stick and it works great. Program is a hard drive hog on full install though using up 1.7 Gig per system. Thankfully Microsoft does not make you have a CD in the computer to run the program so you don't need to have the software handy after install. Overall I think it's the best SIM out there besides MS FS2004. If you're looking for a game look at Combat Flight Simulator 2 or some other shoot-em up game.
I bought my first FS software to fly the number one freeware aircraft simulator on the Internet - The TR-3B Flying Triangle. I flew fighters for the Air Force in late Vietnam, specifically the F-111 and am rated commercial also. The TR-3B Flight Simulator for Microsoft's Flight Sim, is based on the writings, lectures, and TV interviews of Edgar Fouche who wrote "Alien Rapture." (See amazon)
Why? This is what the genius who developed it wrote: "For the experienced flight simmer on FS2002 PRO, I have developed this complete exotic amphibian TR-3B package, which is now available as freeware for download. It includes 3 models - the purple Astra, blue Locust and white Hellas - and as an extra 4th model the TR-3X with its own speedy attacker flight dynamics. The package includes TR-3B panel & gauges, noise cancellation sounds, fsuipc and special lights effects.
This TR-3B is a heavy tactical reconnaissance aircraft equipped with a magnetic field disruptor that reduces the weight by 89 percent (it is not the same as anti-gravity, though). It has been created for Microsoft Flight Simulator. All gauges are included.
The TR-3B can float like a speedboat at Mach 1.5 over water, fly like a heavy helicopter, like a bush plane, a business jet, like a military jet and lift like a rocket. Cruise speed is approx Mach 4.7 at FL340 and above, and approx Mach 2 at sea level. Service ceiling approx 69,000 feet ASL. Super stable. FSFREEWARE, SURCLARO, FSPLANET aircraft simulator sites have reported as many as 5000 downloads in one week!
I searched and read many many web pages about his book and the author, Edgar Fouche including; startfinish(put in the dot com.)biz/wise Click on links for Fouche and Flying Triangle. You will find his full presentation, and the download links for the TR-3B. Great Top Secret aircraft simulator which I recommend, and fantastic details on it. So try some of the free aircraft simulators instead of the poorly designed Lock On: Modern Air Combat.
13 Wonderful!
I recently purchased this as an upgrade from FS2000 what an improvment! The graphics are much better (except in the cockpit for some reason all of the walls are grainy). I love the ATC function. Wonderful game. Highly recommended.
14 A Giant Step Up from FS 1998
I've used FS 98 for several years and wanted to have improved graphics and realism. I'm a casual user, not a gamer. FS 2002 graphics are very good. Realism is improved with more ground detail, air traffic control and better flight characteristics.
I use a basic joystick and flight characteristics are smooth. Landing, for example, are easier in FS 2002.
Overall, a great casual user game but, with the Ground School and other learning capabilities, FS 2002, can accomodate the avid flyer as well.
A great deal with the MS $20.00 rebate thru August, 2005. Just find the rebate form and keep your receipt.
15 The Best of FS Simulations
I've had them all since FS4. 2002 is by far the best of all. Games like this can be very problematic, both within themselves and what they can do to your system. Not the case here, at least not with me. I originally installed FS2002 on a Windows ME system. Since then, I upgraded to Windows XP and the Simulator just hummed along without missing a beat. Of course there are things that could be improved (maybe a little more accurate ATC) but what do you want for $50? The Real World Weather works great and you'll want to add FSNavigator and some of the great AI aircraft to keep you company on those long flights. I've heard the horror stories about the new FS2004 and I'm in no hurry to dump my 2002. It's been too good to me.
16 Great Improvement, Although could have been even better
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002, although outdated by now, is still worth every penny. You can fly to any airport around the world, even the tiny ones.
From Leguardia to Malvern Mun (Small town in Arkansas), you can fly all over the united states, with a borrage of planes. This game lets you experience the Landmarks of the U.S.
You can fly as a freestyle mission or you can fly one of the missions Microsoft gives you, such as circling the Colluseum or flying from New York to Japan.
The only problem with the flights to unknown or small airports, is that the graphics and the land under you is all repetitive and dotted with little buildings, it's all the same.
Overview:
Fun- 10/10 great for you flight buffs.
Grahpics- 7/10 Awesome in well-known places, but repetitive onceyou get into the unknowns of the U.S.
Gameplay- 10/10 Just liek you're a real pilot.
Difficulty-N/A Not really any difficulty.
Overall-27/30
This game is a lot of fun to play, if you know what you're doing, but if you wamt the real combat experience, I reccomend Flight simulator: Battle for Europe.
Try this game out though.
17 ??
Looks like I got to write just to see the reviews: never owned it, of course, just shopping! Stupid set up, ain't it?
forget the stars!
18 HERE'S A HINT!
I want to answer a question that is on a lot of peoples mind! I have just ordered this game but have played it on school computers! Many people are dissapointed in that you can't crash on this game! Well, you can! Just go to the AIRCRAFT button on the top file bar on your screen! Go to the bottom of the menu that pops up, click REALISM & (some other word). Scroll through the provided links until you come to a place that says CRASHES or something like that. On your screen, it probably says:
IGNORE CRASHES
Unhighlight it and highlight:
RECOGNIZE CRASHES and RESTART or something like that!
Now you should be on your way to destroying the city of choice! HAPPY FLYING!
19 Clear for Take-off!
I played this game at a relative's house, and I liked it so much that I want to get it for myself!
I started out just creating flights and crashing the plane (there are no crash graphics, which was a bummer for me, the plane could hit the ground with the nose, but then just pop back up and skid on it's landing gear! The planes wouldn't sink in water either!), but then I started 'learning' how to fly the plane! That was where I got hooked on the game. "Learning" how to fly was a lot of fun, it was like you were really flying with an instructor in the cockpit with you (well, it is a SIMULATOR)!
Next, the graphics are very good, and the sound effects are very realistic! The physics of flying are also great and so are the weather physics! I recommend buying this sim, but only if say you want to fly realistically. If you don't, just buy some other game (such as a fighter pilots game).

22 "As real as it gets"
Introduction
I bought Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 because I had recently been given Jet Fighter IV and I loved it. But, I was looking for a more realistic game so I went with FS2002. Realistic is what I wanted and realistic is what I got! This game is incredible. You soon find out why Microsoft can only put a new version out every 2 years. From the 21,000 airports to the 12 or 16 (Standard edition vs. Professional edition) completely flawless planes...and helicopters....and glider. Microsoft definitely does not fail in reaching the game's slogan of, "As real as it gets".
Game Play - 9.5/10
Whether a novice or a real life pilot, FS2002 has great game play. You can adjust the realism settings from extremely easy to ridiculously hard. If you are new to flying, do not be afraid. The game comes with a 188 page training handbook that covers all of the basics. But, don't worry, it isn't all reading. After each section you can practice what you just read in the air with Rod Machada himself. Once you feel ready, you can go for your pilot's license. After that, if you want, you can go for your commercial pilot's license.
So, if you are not a beginner, or after you take all those lessons, what can you do? Well, the answer is, just about anything you want. You can do one of the 50 pre-assigned missions or you can do the best part of the game, free flight. Take off from any airport you want and land at any airport you want. Just make sure that you signal the airport tower on the Air Traffic Control radio first. This new feature enables you to contact airports before departure and landing or to get clearance to go through their airspace. You can even hear other planes on the ATC. This reminds me, there are other planes in FS2002! This new edition allows you to see other traffic in the skies and on the runways. So make sure you look out for them.
One of the hardest choices about flying may just be deciding what plane to fly. You can choose from 3 commercial Boeing planes, 4 Cessna personal planes (including an amphibious plane), 2 World War I planes, a stunt plane, a glider (you have to use `slew controls' which makes this very unrealistic but still fun), a Bell helicopter, and 4 others if you have the professional version. Every plane handles very differently. Don't attempt to do turns and climbs in the 737 that you just did in the Extra stunt plane. You will quickly overstress or stall the plane. That is just how realistic the game is. The only thing better would be jumping in the actual plane. You can see why they use this game for actual flight training!
Graphics/Sound - 9/10
My local area is the San Francisco Bay Area so the first thing I did was to go see how realistic the scenery was. Boy was I surprised. The game included every bridge from the Golden Gate to the Dumbarton and every stadium from the Cow Palace to Candlestick (3Com). But, the most incredible part was the downtown skyline which looked to be exactly like real life. The only thing more realistic is the terrain which IS perfect. The auto generated scenery is also a nice feature. You can pretty much make the weather what ever you want and when you do, the graphics show it all very nicely. Overall, the graphics get a 9/10.
The sound is another area where FS2002 does not skip on. From the engine noise to the wind to the 15 different voices you can choose to be on the ATC, the sound just adds to the game's reality. Overall, 9/10.
Play Time/Replay ability - 10/10
Well, the last two days I have spent about 12 hours playing this game. You can download more planes, airports and even the real time weather and fly in it. I don't think I need to say anymore.
Final Recommendation - 9.5/10
Microsoft FS2004 may be out right now in which case you may want to spend the extra money and try it. But, for a guaranteed great game, purchase MFS2002. You just cannot beat that! Just make sure that 1) your system can handle it before you buy it and 2) you don't have anything important to do for a while because this game will take up a lot of your time.
23 Flight simulator 2002 is the boom
it is like flying! you can fly from any airport in the us big or small.I give this a 5 star review becuse it is fun....
24 READ THIS ONE!!!

this is the sweetest flight sim on the market you fly sky high the graphics are sweet and the palnes are awesome. I HIGHLY reccomend this game to any body that doesnt have this. I LOVE IT. THANKYOU BILL GATES!!!!!!
26 Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002
This is typical of Microsoft products....they don't work and they charge you to try to fix them. I loaded the game on Windows XP, Pentium 4 and it took seven (7) tries brfore it loaded. when I try to play the game I get a "scenery load error" and every thing outside the cockpit is grey or black. So far there has been no response from Microsoft on my request for assistance via email. I am not surprised.
27 great sim
this is the best sim on the market. it is loaded with scenery evan though they dont have the gates, little cars at the airport, and passengers. The other things that you are able to use flight plans that The atc will guide you. Right now I wouldn't buy it because fs2004 is coming out in 4 or 5 months.
28 "The best of the best!!!"
THIS IS THE BEST, AND I MEAN THE BEST FLIGHT SIMULATOR OUT THERE!!, THE GRAPHICS ARE AMAZING, AND THIS GAME WOULD SURELY GIVE YOU MORE OF A THRILL, IN THE CONCEPT OF FLYING, I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THIS GAME TO ANY ONE WHO LIKES OR EVEN DISLIKES THIS FLIGHT SIMULATOR 2002, " THIS IS THE BEST OF THE BEST!!"
29 finaly a peace-ful non shooting game
the best sim ive ever played but if you like shooting buy combat flight sim 3 by microsoft but i like this and i highly reccomend you get this! it has very butiful scenery and makes you feel like a real pilot!
30 As Real as it Gets!
FS2k2 is even better than all of its predecessors. The best features of it are a new air traffic control system, an improved GPS system, improved virtual cockpit (a feature that was in FS98, but not FS2k), and a new seaplane (Cessna Grand Caravan Amphibian) and Boeing 747. One thing I wished Microsoft had improved was the quality of the jet planes, as well as put liveries from real-world airlines. The latter can be solved by visiting any flight sim website. One bad thing about FS2k2 is that the Concorde is gone. I was able to pull out the Concorde from FS2k and install it in FS2k2, but it does have a couple of glitches. If you are a big flight simmer, make sure you visit [URL] and download more planes and other features. Oh, and make sure you get AFCAD and TrafficTools, by Lee Swordy, and AITM, by Thomas Molitor, which are necessary utilites when using add-ons. See you in the virtual skies!
31 Great Simulator!!!
This game is GREAT for anyone who loves planes, or has any interest in them, for that matter!! This is by far the BEST simulator game out on the market! I only gave it 4 stars because it does have a few glitches here and there, but it is still a GREAT game! I will say though, it is well worth the money, but, I think you would get a better deal by getting the Professional Edition! So check it out! You won't be sorry!
32 It's a flying sim - not a game
If you run out and get this program thinking your getting a game your wrong. This is a flight Simulator and that is what you get. If your a pilot or an aspiring pilot and want to get some practice flying or try out what it takes to fly an aircraft this is a good way to find out. 33 awsome
im a simulation lover i play this game all day. this is the best one i played yet I own the 98 and 2000 version also but 2002 is the best one. the graphics are awsome and online play is even beater with air shows and escort missions and all sorts of things. some of the airplanes have spoilers and retractable landing gear. and all of the air planes have flaps of course when i got 98 i did not know any thing about flying an airplane now I know alot. so if i were u i would buy the game.
34 Great graphics and real time flying
Flight Simulator 2002 is the best thing to being real. Now if the paint on the outside of the airplane would say the real companies like Delta, Southwest, United and American, that would even better. The best teacher in pilot traning is in here. There are real time graphics. My favorite is Las Vegas, you can see all of the casinos like Luxor, MGM Grand and the one that you see first from the skies... Statosphere. There are real time graphics and airplanes which makes it really good.
All airports are here even small ones like military bases and cargo fields that have only 1 a small runways to airports with more than 4 runways like Chicago O'Hare. They pack all this in one box of 3 CD's.
One bad thing about this game is the long load times even when you have a great computer... Still long load times. But this does't take the fun out of the game. Great game but it costs an arm and a leg to buy it, I think it is worth it.
35 Great Realism, But lacks the "Game" Part
First off, this is a Great Game. If you are truly interested in aviation then you might want to look in to this game. I am Interested in Flight simulators, but the problem is, is that there are not a lot of "fun" aspects of the game. You dont shoot down any aircraft, like in war flight sims. All you do is fly. Simply Fly. You can cut engine power, to add a twist, but thats it. dont get me wrong, the game is good, its fun to fly but you just cany expect much more.
Some of the good things are the realism. Its simply as close as you get. There are so many airports, you can fly to your homeotwn, if its New York City, or some small town in kentucky. You also have the opportunity to fly a wide variety of aircraft. Some of us might be able to fly small Cesnus, but i doubt that many will ever be able to fly a fully loaded Boeing 777.
In Conclusiion: If your intrested in aviation, not just flying a P-51 and nockin off 109's but interested in flying small aircraft(or large), than this is the game for you. I am glad that I bought this game. I dont play it all the time, but its a nice game to play and you can test your skill and learn alot. Its all how interested you are.
36 Probably the best Flight Simulator available for the PC
MS Flight Simulator 2002 is a very detailed game that lets PC users attempt their skill at flying in a simulated environment. The game platform is a very accurate 3-D model of the entire Earth's surface, and features many many airports all over the planet. My favorite feature is the real-world weather conditions that you can download from the internet. Unfortunayely, the fog/ visibility effects looked better of FS 2000. The cloud formations look great on this one, though. I just wish they would include more aircraft, like a twin-turbine Cessna, or a military jet, like F-16 or MIG.
Depending on the type of PC you have, the performance of this demanding program will probably slow the frame rate down, especially when flying over very detailed cities like New York or London with broken clouds and other air traffic. Just be sure to check the specs and make sure your PC can handle it.
37 Just Flying
... Once i got FS 2002 it took up a lot of space for the full install (1.3 gigs) but i think it was worth it. The graphics on this game are great, not only can you land and take off from almost every airport you can think of. The also have an air traffic controller (ATC), I think its cool. This game is great for people who just like to fly, but i do suggest that you buy a good joystick. It just makes the game all the more fun, the only thing i dont like about this game they only have like 8 planes, but I do hear you can download almost any plane off of the internet from Fed X mail planes to British AirWays. ...
38 Game or tool?
Looking to have a lot of fun? This might not be the program for you. Looking to learn a lot about flying planes? Then this program will be a great tool. The graphics in the game are great, and the game has every single airport you could want to take off from; from your big city airport to the dirt runway behind your cornfield. A lot of attention to detail was put into the program. The program is a great deal for the money it will cost, but if you're looking for a fun game, this might not be it, but it does have a lot of potential. Don't buy this unless you plan on buying a nice joystick.
39 In Training
After waking up one morning and FINALLY running down to the local air port to find out about flying lessons, I was told to check out Flight Simulator for some practice before I actually get into an airplane, myself. TURN UP THE HARDWARE ACCELERATOR!! If you have video card problems... Please don't beat yourself up and get this software... But, if your computer works handy-dandy, BUY IT NOW! So far I have flown out of Omaha to Denver, Denver to Las Vegas, Las Vegas to Phoenix, and Phoenix back to Omaha. Granted, it has taken me about a month to actually accomplish this (because after flying for 3-4 hours straight, I'm not too much in the mood to do it all over again really quick, and do it right). I've been flying in the Cessna Skylane (which is what I would actually be flying to get my pilot's license) and it makes it look so simple, except for the turns! (I hate turning!) Although I still haven't flown for real, so I don't know how real FS is, I wouldn't doubt it's any less hard than the real thing!
40 Flight Simulator 2002
This game is fun, but the graphics could use a little bit of help. Those of you who like FS2000 or FS98, you'll love this one. Although some planes have dissapeared, the game is much more engaging.
41 "Vicarious existence is a ... waste of time"
INTRO: The main aspect of this game I have a problem with is the graphics. In particular, the terrain at low altitude needs much more work. For example, the shadows that are cast from the skyscrapers are much too dark, they look like little black holes [albeit square ones].
QUESTION: If your brain has the ability to store & access roughly 80 Terabytes of information, then how many zeroes and ones do you need to effectively map the world?
ANSWER: Waaay more than the number contained on these three CD-ROMs.
GROUND SCENERY: The first airport I took off from was Sydney. Don't expect a level of detail where you see Novotell or anything close to that sort of realism while you're rolling down the taxiway. Don't expect to see "Sheremetovo 2" written in cyrillic on the terminal building at Moscow airport. Don't think you'll be able to fly past your local city recognising all these landmarks either. At most, expect two or three recognisable structures per city. Even with all the graphics settings at maximum, look closely and all you'll see is rendered textures and polygonal bitmaps.
CLOUD GENERATION: So what do I like about FS2002? I love the clouds. They can appear very white and wispy, or they can seem dark and stormy. The clouds are fantastic! Even so, there is one thing missing with the "cloud modelling" which would make them even more realistic. You can generate virtual clouds that look absolutely true to life, but they simply cannot produce a sunset. If a cloud moves in front of a setting sun, it only looks like a thick smoke/fog/smog with a very feeble sun trying to penetrate through it. There is absolutley no "silver lining" effect - now that would really be something to behold: a virtual sunset!
ARTIFICIAL REALITY: One youngster commented that when you hit the ground, the plane doesn't even break up or anything. When I read his review, I thought "Yeah, but he's a kid - what does he know?" But I think for a simulator that claims on the front of the box: "Flight Simulator 2002 As Real As It Gets", it is a rather misleading statement. You can dive straight into the ground at over mach 1, and the plane will merely stick in to the ground with the nose and fuselage "buried" up to the leading edges of the main wings - with no impact crater or explosion! Is that as real as it gets? I sure hope not. Can a 747-400 /really/ fly upside-down or perform 30,000 foot loop-the-loops? I have absolutely no idea, but it sure was fun executing these manoeuvres!!.
FINAL OPINIONS: I simply can't believe they market this game as a game - they should sell this strictly to pilots (in duty-free shops at airports worldwide) - there is simply not enough action or suspense for the average gamer. On the other hand, if you are a pilot, or you'd like to be a pilot, or you're an aviation fanatic, then I can sincerely recommend this.
I realised after playing for the first time, that I could have actually booked a *real* 1.5 hour flight for the price of this game. I was extremely disappointed at first, but occasionally I've grown to enjoy the "game" for what it is (a simulator). ..
42 Incremental Improvement
I have a private pilot cert. I used FS98 to improve my landings, when I was training. It was just good enough. The thing about landing is you have to gradually pull back on the yoke to stay in a certain configuration, relative to the runway. When you fly around with an instructor, you are paying the big bucks to do something lasting 10 seconds. Anyway, you could get better at doing this with the flight sim.
I didn't like FS2000 because I thought the landing sim was sloppier. The one is 2002 is better, and the graphics are good enough that you can judge where the runway is and just fly down. That means you can turn off the power (to the sim aircraft) and pretend you are doing emergency landings...
A lot of flight instructors have griped that their students come in off of MS FS and they don't look out the window. In other words, they fly the instruments because that's how the flight sim works best. As the graphics improve, you have a better shot at seeing how you are, relative to the horizon, and whether things are going the way you want.
You can get a set of pedals for this sim. The problem is one of using rudder and ailerons in turns. When you get down to the runway, you have to cross control to stay on the centerline. This is tough with a twist control for the rudders.
43 If you like Just flying its Good !
I recieved Flight Simulator as a X-Mas gift . I installed it on my Pentium III 750MHZ 256SDRAM O/S Windows Me ATI RADEON 32MB Graphics PCI. It has never crashed my system yet , Iam confused with these reviews by people with Pentium 4 1.8 Gig systems with a ton of RAM saying that it crashes their system, they must not have something configured correctly. I gave the Simulator 4 stars because I believe it lives up to what it claims to be a good simulator with great graphics. My cons are the amount of hard drive space it takes up aprx. 1.6 gigs on my system with full install and if you just like to fly Iam sure you will love this simulator . I have a need for more action in a PC Game and find this one rather boring . If it wasnt for those 2 negatives, I probably would have given it 5 stars.
44 A 3-D model of the entire Earth's surface
FS2002 is a great flight simulator. It has airports from all over the globe, including many third-world countries. The cities are rendered beautifully, and the lighting effects are true-to-life. The real-world downloadable weather feature is fairly accurate, but the visibility/ fog effects could use some work. It is possible to crash into other aircraft, but you must toggle that setting through the realism settings menu. When the weather is activated and you fly over New York City, the game does slow down somewhat. If you are interested in flying simulators, this is the one to get. Many landmarks, especially in the US, Europe and Japan have been included in the program, and the US cities, as well as London, Paris, Rome, Athens, Berlin and Moscow are accurately modeled. My only problems with the sim are the bad fog and visibility effects, and the fact that rivers do not match the bottoms of the valleys in some landscapes. The lake and river glitches from FS 2000 have been fixed, however. A very good flight simulator, even though it's from Microsoft.
45 A GREAT game...
I spent a lot of time reading a lot of reviews, some good and some bad... but I finally decided to buy this game. I never played a flight simulator before and I was suprised with the quality of the graphics. They are not too good when close to the ground, but when you fly up (10,000+ feet) you feel like you are really in a plane. My favorite places to fly are around the tropics at sunset, because the water is clear and the sky is really nice looking. If you are hesitatent to buy, it is worth the full price.
46 HORRID, ABSOLUTELEY A WASTE OF MONEY!!!!!!!!
I bought FS2002 when it came out and I was excited about this one becuase I had gotten FS 95-2000 and it kept getting better, plus have a pentium 4, 1.8 GHZ, 1012 RAM, i was expecting the graphics to look just as good as the ones on the box, but boy was i in for a big mess. The graphics are so bad, my comp freezes every 15 minutes, so many errors, i practically cry that Microsoft did such a bad job. The airplanes are so cheap that the skins load all over the scenery, you can't even crash with another airplane, u just go through them. If you crash in water, there is no splash, the airplane just hits it and gets stuck in one place!!!!!! Thats just crap, 1 star!
47 If only all MS products were this good.
I bought version 3 - I think it was - 10 years ago and played it for years - so now I decided to get the current copy. I still love it. You really get your money's worth with this one, since there are endless combinations of scenery, aircraft, weather conditions, etc. One word of caution, it does require a good computer to run this program.
48 WOW!
I have a Pentium 4 1.9 GHZ, Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card, Nvidia GeForce 3 Ti300 Graphics card, and 256 mb of RDRAM and MS Flight Sim is amazing! The graphics are excellent and the frame rate is better than everyone says it is. I especially liked the scenery it was great and non-repetative.
49 flight sim
I got flight fs2002 in december and i sill play it 2 times a day. The visuals are the same as real life. There are more planes then fs2000 and now washington dc is in the game. there are over 21,000 airports to choose from and if u just got the game u can set it to easy mode so u don't crash. Also there is on-line and network gaming so u can play with the friends who have fs2002. Now u can talk with the airports with the air traffic controler feature. There are a lot of flight lessons u can use to get started. Also there is one plane that microsoft don't tell u about, and i works just like the others. Over all flight simulator 2002 is the best flight sim you can get.
50 Nice, but didn't fully live up to the hype for me ...
Let me say right off the bat that for anyone who wants a "true" flying experience, this is the simulator to get. My personal favorite feature is the "realism" settings, which effectively lets you adjst a variety of options from "real" to what I call "easy", which means that you can easily get into the air to do some "sight seeing".
I only have 2 gripes about this game:
#1 - The graphics on MY machine are not even close to what you see on the box. I have a Pentium III Xeon machine (667Mhz), with a 32MB ATI All-In-Wonder card (the chipset is pre-Radeon). After playing games for a couple of years like Need For Speed III, I thought FS2002 would look fantastic. However, to me the ground looks just like that game "Flight" from a few years ago, except with a few buildings here and there. The FS2002 scenery doesn't look nearly as good as any driving simulator that I have seen in the last 3 years. Sure, you can adjust the detail levels, but I'm just saying unless you have a fairly new machine, don't expect the eye candy you read about and see on the box. One final note ... although the ground looks lousy (at low altitudes), the buildings really are amazing, even on my slow machine.
#2 - In order to save some hard drive space, I chose the "custom" install menu. There were checkboxes for many regions around the world to include in the installation. I left out about half of them. Well, now every time I turn the game on, there is an error message that pops up lecturing me that a certain file (and it includes the menu path) is not loaded. My point is that if at all possible, do the full installation, because if you do a "custom" installation, you might run into some bugs.
All & all this is a really neat game IF you are a true aviation enthusiast, with a nice assortment of aircraft to fly. I give it 4 stars.
51 Amazing Scenery
Wow, If you want simply the best flight simulator or gaming expierience get Micrisoft Flight Simulator 2002 now! Unbeleivable scenery and detailed cockpits and airports make this game legendary . I recomend this game to a young inspiring pilot or too just people who want a jaw dropping gaming expierience.
52 The detail is amazing
I bought this game the day before New Year's Eve, and I'm still amazed at the detail. In Vegas, George Carlin is headlining at Bally's and the Bellagio fountains are in full swing. The entire Los Angeles area from a high altitude looks EXACTLY what it looks like in real life (I fly over it frequently). Actually, that goes for every city. Even taking off from a small, non-descript island in the Philippines, all of the surrounding island geography is correct. Simply amazing.
53 Realism
My dad is a liscenced pilot. I let him try out Flight Simulator 98 for a while. Despite slight handling flaws, he thought it was pretty accurate. He was most amazed by the fact that very small and local airports are represented perfectly, along with exact replicas of real world landscapes. The graphics back then were not the best, but I am hoping that the graphics in this game will help bring out the large strides in gaming technology from then to now.
54 If You Like Crashes
In my original review, I wrote: If you like crashes (computer crashes) you'll get them.... I got a lot of patient help from Microsoft and we determined that my on-the-mother-board sound capability was the culprit. I got my son a new sound card for Christmas and results have been much much better since. Another key to enjoying the game was receiving my CH Products USB Yoke for Christmas. With these improvements, I have been having a blast. Even my kids, (ages 18, 24 and 33) who are devoted to the latest video games found that realistic flight simulation is a lot of fun.
I would still complain that, while the step by step lessons are very useful (yes, I can even stand Ron's corny humor) there are a lot of inconsistencies between what the instructor tells you during the lesson and what is printed in the flight school manual. Also the Cessna 182 seems to handle differently on "real" flights compared to the lessons. This can be quite frustrating.
However the lessons are fun and effective (if you have some patience). I hope to complete my instrument check ride this week! (Just don't go for any rides with me!!)
55 lots and lots of airports!!
This game is really great! The graphics are excellent. I live in Pietermaritzburg and the game has got oribi airport (called Pietermaritzburg airport in the game) and the landscape here is excactly like in the game. It's got basically every airport in South Africa. It's got airports I never even knew existed! In flight simulator 95 it's only got 2 airports in South africa in this game it's got ...well, lots of airports. Probably more than 80. At first the game really messed up our computer but now it's working very nicely. The virtual cockpit is great! In fact everything to do with the plane is great. Oh, sorry everything in the game is great. The weather,ATC,autogen scenery ... everything. This game is only rated 4.5 stars. Come on!? I think it deserves 5!
56 bubbly and anxious to try it
hrumph... i don't have it yet, but as the saying goes, it's in the mail... and i'm very excited to try it out!! My system is a 800MHz Pentium III, with 256MB RAM, and a PCI Voodoo3 card. bleh.
I don't know if this will be sufficient, but I don't see why not.If FS2002 is anything like FS98 and FS2000, it's going to be a heluva game!!!
57 The Best of The Series!
This is the best game ever! It has th 747-400(Jumbo jet) plus tuns of other planes! Buy it! It is the BEST!
58 Flight Simulator 2002 is THE simulator!
Flight Simulator 2002 is THE simulator!
There is no comparison for Flight Simulator 2002. With the new scenery and Microsoft Direct X technology, this game destroys the bar between reality and fantasy. The graphics are extremely realistic down to the rivets on the planes! Microsoft has done a great job with real satellite images and wonderful 3D senery generation. Flight Simulator 2002 compared to 2000 is like Windows 98 compared to Windows XP. It is a leap into the future.... (The game can be bulky: 1.8GB full install)
59 Disappointing
I have a 650mhz P3, 256 RAM machine, with a GeForce 256 graphics card and can only run trouble free with the low to medium display options (38-43 frame rate) and the graphics are a long way from the beautiful screenshots on the packaging. Aside from the graphics, the game is extremely detailed and of very high quality, but since so many reviews focus on the graphics, you may want to rethink if you have a low end machine.
60 best simulator yet
wow, that was my first reaction when I played the game for the first time. This game is perfect. The best thing about the game, besides the graphics, is the atc. No matter where you are, the atc always informs you and gives you directions. I also love the artificial inteligence they put in now the sky's are crowded.
This is the best simulator yet. I would reccomend this to any one.
61 Awesome game - when it doesn't crash
This game is beautifully done and a joy to play - when it's not crashing my system. This game has many pionts in its favor: awe inspiring scenary, take off or land at any airport you can think of - no matter how small, and the new floatplane means you can take off and land anywhere there's water. Unfortunately this game crashes my system hard and often. It has crashed my system in ways I've never even seen before. On average about one crash per 30 minutes of play time. Reboots have needed to repair the registry and display settings have had to be reset.
The flight instruction is great, except that the manual is filled with annoying (non)humor that makes reading it a real pain. I just want flight instruction! If I want comedy I'll turn on the comedy channel.
This program has great potential. I'd have given Flight Simulator 2002 a five it it didn't crash my system so often. As it sits now I won't be playing this game any more until Microsoft releases some patches so that I don't end up spending more time rebooting than playing.
62 Great Improvement!
Wow! This is my word for this game. If you owned last years FS 2000, you know what I am talking about. Ok, from the start, those of you who are thinking of buying this game, here are the newest things: (ATC, Artificial Intelligence Traffic, Auto Gen Scenery, new planes, improvements in the game)
The ATC too me boosts the game up another hundred notches. This is just smart, the ATC knows where you are, where to go if you filed a flight plan, what to do, and sounds very real! There is no airplane without Air Traffic Control, and this addition just makes this simulator even better! Next is the AI Traffic in this game. Microsoft added other planes to fly with you, so the ATC can also talk to them and you, making it even more real. You now have to hold short of the runway so another aircraft can land. How great is that compared to last years version? OK, this Auto Gen thing is supposed to generate the landscape and make it beautiful, and at first I didnt see a difference from the first version and this one. Then I went to settings, and changed it, and went back flying. Wow! What a difference, it is beautiful. And flying at night is great, I mean the lights (Beacons, NAV, Landing) look so great, even when you land, the lights show up on the runway all of the sudden, it is nice. Oh, and the landscape is nice. Go to a major city, such as San Francisco or Chicago, and see how great the tall skyscrapers look. Las Vegas at night is amazing! The new planes are the Cessna Floater, and the mother of all planes, the Boeing-747. The 747, the mother of all planes is finally here, which I am sure many of you are happy about!
Oh, and a note: When you first start the game, the imaging is good, but could be better (ex- the skins on the plane can be a bit messed), go to settings, and fix it up. Go back to the game, and wow, it is amazing.
One question I have to those that know the answer: How come I see a screenshot online of an airport, and there is a gate (boarding gate from terminal to aircraft) in the picture, but not in the game? Is it only for the professional version?
Those of you who have the love for flying, and the love for planes, this is the simulator, program for you. And if you are a user of FS 2000, what are you waiting for? Get this game! Actually, those who love airplanes, flying, and everything else about aviation, this is your game! WOW!
63 A giant leap from FS2000
I just purchased FS2002 standard ed. over the weekend, and I have to say it's incredible compared to FS2000. The scenery is rich and generally authentic, and the virtual cockpit view makes the game much more realistic than the previous version. A note on system requirements: I'm running an Athlon 1.2GHz with a ATI Radeon 32 graphic card and 512mb RAM, and the game runs smoothly at the highest screen resolution and all scenery options enabled. Hats off to the FS Team at Microsoft on this one! Thanks!!!
64 Noteworthy Improvements but One BIG Problem
I have to say that this sim is a great deal improved from the 2000 version. It has greater environmental detail, The Air Traffic Control interaction is a worthy improvement, and among many other things, the flight dynamics have been improved. And, even though I have a 450 Mhz Pentium 3 with 192 Mg's of RAM, it still runs very well on my computer...it only becomes the infamous slide show when I set the sound and display to the highest levels.
The big "BUT" is that the skins on the airplanes are all messed up. Sometimes the colors are in the opposite phases, sometimes they are all shuffled up (the faces of the pilots are on the tail and the engine skins are on the sides of the fuselage), and sometimes they are on the wrong planes(the Landmark Airlines skin for the 777 will be on the Cessna Seaplane and it won't even fit).
I'm hoping for all my fellow simmers that this is a problem with my computer, not with the program. I suppose if it is, then MS will make a patch for it.
65 The mother of all flight sims has finally arrived!
What the giants at Microsoft have managed to accomplish with Flight Simulator 2002 is simply astounding! Gone are the resource eating and maddening slide shows offered in FS 2000, which for the record, I loathed (hate is such a strong word isn't it?). What we get in turn is a highly and richly detailed virutal world (from the planes to the terrain) that is guaranteed to make even the hardened heart of the most jaded flightsimer soar!
Straight out the gate FS 2002 pulls away from the pack with an untouchable collection of options and tweaks and it's in these tweaks that we find what truly makes it shine. The system requirements (as stated on the box) are a PII 300mhz machine, with 64mb of RAM and a 8mb video card, now that may get you flying but it's fair to say that to take full advantage of every beautiful pixel FS 2002 has to offer, you'd better be packing a mighty big stick indeed, like say a P4, 1.8 ghz machine with a truck load of ram (256 plus) and a 64mb video card. That said however the endless options FS 2002 offers, makes it quite friendly to middle of the road machines. My PII 450mhz system for instance with 256 Mb of RAM and a 32mb ATI Rage 2000 Xpert Pro video board gets me into the air nicely thank you with an average rate of 14 frames per second on the low end to over 30 on the high end. And although the graphics options for my system need to sit toward the lower end of the spectrum FS 2002 is still nothing short of breathtaking! From it's use of satellite ground imagery (roads and landmarks are accurately rendered), auto generated scenery, textures, shadows, lighting and finely detailed airports, buildings and even trees (which intensify the sensation of speed near the ground) to it's amazing AI and voice commands from airtraffic control calling out directions and commands from any of 20,000 airports, everything stitches tightly together for a simulated flying experience that simply makes you forget your sitting at your desk top. The cabins of the aircraft are now virtual 3D environments, sinking you deeper into the sensation of actually commanding some of the worlds most famous and powerful aircraft. Nice additions to the FS series are a floatplane and the mother of all commercial work horses the 747-400, Microsoft also threw in an F4U-1A Corsair, which is not listed on the box, nice bonus.
If there are in fact down sides to FS 2002, I've missed them (or over looked them) while exploring the heights of this remarkable simulation. No I take that back, it would be even better if I had a more powerful machine!
Now if you've got the system speed and hard drive space (at over 700mb it took nearly 20 minutes to load) prepare yourself for the ride of your life (but be sure to upgrade your drivers first). FS 2002 is a winner, making you wonder if they could manage such amazing visual miracles with this one, what can we look forward to 5 or 10 years down the road, wow!
66 This looks amazing
Hey, im only 10 and ive been on the internet since I was 6 but anyway. Ive never played a flight simulator but this looks great.
I was also wondering if you could fly across the whole state and see everything like in ga see the stone mountain and kennesaw moutain. And can you fly around the whole world?
67 It looks Cool!
This Game Looks Cool, the Graphics look good, but it still remains to be seen if it runs good and if the Graghics are really as good as they look? The Requirements are a bit much. But besides that I think it is probably a great Game!
68 Based on screenshots
This is the most realistic simulator out there. They are finaly using satelite photos to do the landscape, very impressive.
69 this game is amazing great Buy ...
if you are an enthusiast or pilot, this games is for you. I have flight sim 2000 but from the new features, planes, scenery and graphics, fs 2002 looks amazing. Microsofts website has some pics of the game which are very impressive. From the look of the pictures this games is definetly a must have...
70 New planes.... New game....
The new planes are distinct. The Boeing 747 is making its appearence for the first time. Other fav's like the 777 and learjet will be back also. The new auto-gen system configurates the surrounding areas so that they appear when you can see it (i.e. If you can only see past the horizon, then the computer knows not to generate any un-needed information) This will be a great game- But! .... Don't miss this Flight-Sim! -GodzillaJ25
71 Flight Simulator 2002 review by Habeel Ahmed
I would say if you want to buy a kind of Aiplane game, then you should by the Flight Simulator 2002 or any other Flight Simulator product.Because if you have Flight Simulator. There are lots of utilites avalible. Like lots of free program's by which you can add new seneries in your Flight Simulator.Lots of programs to make Aircrafts. I have never seen a game in which you can edit something. And another thing because lots of people have bought Flight Simulator you wil find more people on the multiplayer sections of Flight Simulator 98,2000,2002.
