Tilt Wheel Technology

Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse with Tilt Wheel Technology makes scrolling easier, smoother, and faster than ever:Wireless no mouse cord or recharging station!Comfort for either hand
Designed by ergonomic experts for your comfort.
1 MS comfort Mouse
I've had this mouse for about 4 months and really love it! I am trying to find one for my laptop as well. It is smooth and easy to handle. I would definitely recommend it for your PC.
I have developed carpal tunnel from using another wireless mouse for my laptop which requires a more forceful click. I can really tell the difference from using this MS mouse and the other red one.
2 oh so nice
i decided to try wireless so that i wouldn't have to fight with my cat anymore, whose favorite place to lay when i'm on the computer is (where else?) right in front of me on the computer desk! he was always laying on the cord, making things difficult.

i was very surprised by the quality of the mouse and the ease with which it installed. it was so simple, i was done in two minutes.

at first the sensitivity of the scroll wheel caught me off guard. my old mouse's wheel would kind of click in short distances at a time, while this one can go continuously. it's very smooth, and once i became accustomed to it, i thought it was very nice!

the mouse is a bit heavy, but i find that i don't have to pick it up and pull as often as i did with my corded mouse, so it's a trade-off. and in case you're interested, i'm using the mouse only about three feet from the receiver, which is under my computer desk. i have never had any intentions of leaving my computer desk with the mouse, so i can't tell you about range.
3 Precision and comfort are the game
This lightweight wireless optical mouse from Microsoft continues the company's solid line of input devices. The best features of this mouse compared to the competition are:

1) Excellent precision. As a pointer device you really want the mouse to go where it should, so precision is very important. As with other MS optical mouses (BTW, we uber-geeks call them "mouses", and we call the furry rodents "mice"), this one is high-precision. It's almost like the mouse knows where you want the pointer to be.

2) Responsive. A click is a click. A lot of wireless mouses tend to miss a click or two often, but not this one.

3) Comfortable. I suffer from carpal tunnel. This mouse is one of the most comfortable ones I've used, although it's still not perfect and still causes wrist and palm pains after I use it for an extended period of time.

4) Good battery life and pure plug-n-play.

This mouse is optical, so works on any flat surface except glass and mirror. It's also free from lint and dust that can plague a traditional mouse's ball bad. I can't comment on its range since I have the transmitter on my desk so it's pretty close to the mouse itself.

This is an excellent mouse because it's easy to set up, easy to use, and comfortable to hold. I highly recommend it.
4 Working very well so far
I have got this mouse a few days ago, and it works quite well. This is my first wireless mouse, so I can't compare it with anything. I have put the transmitter on my computer, which is about 2 feet away and 1.5 feet above where I use the mouse. So far it works well without 'warping'.
5 Feels good works poorly
I've used this mouse for about two weeks and am sending it back. First the good - it installed easily enough and set-up was quick. The ergonomics of the mouse are great and the buttons and scroll wheel seem well manufactured. Now the bad - even after fresh batteries I couldn't get very far from the monitor, so it has very weak reception. When it was close enough, it was sketchy whether or not it would recognize a button click. The crummy performance has encouraged me to send it back and try something else. In summary, I like the design and feel, but it falls short in reliability.
6 Misprint ... 3 Foot Range should read 3 inch range
Amazingly, I didn't really read the tech specs for the MS Optical Wireless Mouse version 2.0 before I ordered it. Unbelievably, the documentation says the wireless range is 3' (ie: 3 feet -which by the way is pretty useless). I had ordered 2 of them for computers in conference roomb. Both of them worked ok for about 5 minutes, then started getting hung up and the pointer wouldn't move .... rebooting and reloading ensued, then, I found that if I move the mouse to within 3" (That's 3 INCHES) the mouse works fine... I can move it outside of the 3 inch range and it starts hanging up. Fresh batteries...nope, same thing. Changed the Mouse and RF receiver channels, same thing still.......So, I hooked up the old trusty Logitech RF Keybd and mouse that I've had for about 5 years and it works fine, up to 14 FEET away. (so the MS problem isn't radio interference or anything apparantly, it is just shoddy craftmanship.
7 Good design, needs better user defined customization
PLUSES: The Microsoft Wireless optical mouse has a great feel, rock-steady movement and cursor control.

MINUSES: The "Tiltwheel" technology has limited use. Hopefully, Microsoft will add user-defined functionality to the scroll wheel tilt (like backspace, etc) so it is a useful addition to the normal mouse.
8 Very Very Very comfortable!!!!
Did I say it was very comfortable?? :)
I bought this mouse about 6months ago and I didn't have to replace the battery yet!!! Amazing! and i use it 5 to 6 hours a day! I suffered from carpal tunnel syndrom and my doctor recommended I buy this Microsoft mouse. Since i started using this mouse, i don't feel any discomfort from using my computer. And because it was designed by Microsoft, i had no compatability issues with my computer.
9 Not bad at all
This is actually a pretty good mouse. The price is up there for a new one (40-50 bucks) but I really liked it accuracy and ease of use. The scroll wheel is a nice heavy feeling on it when scrolling. It's a smooth scroll without any clicking noises or anything like that with the side to side scrolling. I recommend getting this mouse if your lookin for a nicer than normal mouse. I am giving this 5 stars because I've used it for hours of gaming and regular day use (internet browsing) and loved it every day. You can find them cheaper on the net look around before purchasing, it's your best bet. Oh and make sure you buy some recharable batteries if you don't feel like wasting a bunch of batteries every 3-5 months. It's cheaper in the long run!
10 Great Job Microsoft (I doubt I'll say this again in my life)
This is a (sigh) great mouse from microsoft. I love the way it fits my hand. The scroll wheel is incredibly smooth and allows for more sensitive scrolling. Also, like the box says, this mouse is very economical (when it comes to batteries). I have found it to have great battery life. I was able to use it without having to replace the batteries for 4 months. (I use my computer a little more than most people.) My one complaint happens to be wiith the selling point of this product. The tilt wheel. I barely use it because it cannot be programmmed to do anything except move from side to side in large documents. (I have a large flat panel display and I keep my resolution at 1024x768, so I never really have documents that need to be scrolled side to side). I was hoping it could at least be progammed to move back and forward in my web browser or highlight text. Still this is a good mouse that is reasonably priced.
11 poor ergonomics
I acquired one of these mice in a Microsoft Optical Desktop 2.0 bundle.

The scroll wheel also scrolls sideways, but this is of little practical use; it also requires far much more force to use it as a middle mouse button that it's useless for gaming.

This model is much higher than most normal mice I'm used to, and I found myself getting a sore hand after using it for more than half an hour.

If you're after an ergonomic mouse by Microsoft, consider one of the newest series three Microsoft IntelliMouse models. If you're after a decent symmetric pointing device, consider something simpler such as the Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse.
12 OK mice for everything except gaming
This mouse is great for multitasking, and the tilt wheel certainly is no gimmick, but there is a slight lag, which is noticable only in games. There is a cool feature that allows you to only have one battery in, and the mouse still works. The single battery has to be placed nearthe middle or there is a strange feel to it without a proper center of balance. Wireless is a lot more comfortable than a mouse anchored by a wire, but if you want a gaming mouse, go logitec. They make the best mices for gaming.
13 Great Mouse!
Although a bit on the heavy side, it has good functionality. It scrolls smoothly with great tracking speed! Installion was a breeze and batteries last well. I'd say, it's worth it but the tilt wheel is just a gimmick.
14 not perfect
Yes indeed, it is an ergonomic mouse and easy to carry with your notebook. Why am I rating with 3 stars? My first intention on purchasing this mouse was to use it during oral presentations, this device is supposed to work with a distance up to 6 feet from its receiver, but in the real life, it only works within a distance of 3-4 feet... The problems increase when there are other electronic devices close to the receiver, fact that diminishes the quality of signal transmision. If you are a teacher or one of your tasks on your work is to give oral presentations, I only recommend this wireless mouse IF you also buy an USB extension cable that can help you get the receiver closer to the mouse... In this way you won't have to worry about distances.
15 Definitely a good mouse - but not perfect
This is a good cordless mouse. It's sensitive to touch and it has programmable buttons which is a big plus. It's ergonomic. The downsides are not major ones. It is a little heavier/bulkier than I expected and I was disappointed with the color (I wanted blue and it looks gray to me). Also I was not happy with the fact that the receiver is not the kind built into the USB plug. I bought this to take with my notebook when travelling but with the bulkiness of the mouse and the annoyance of the corded receiver, I will just use it at home and buy another for travel. Also, it's far too expensive.
16 Inadequate driver software
The driver software does NOT work with any version of Windows except Windows 2000 and XP. The mouse itself appears to be mechanically excellent, but the lack of driver support is unacceptable. Buy Logitech instead.
17 Pretty Darn Good (in Spite of the Company)
As much as I am compelled to bash Microsoft for their buggy software, I can't help recommending this mouse. A previous reviewer noted the different shape, but to me the shape actually gives you the sense of a more secure grip on the thing. I admit though it took a few weeks to get used to. My only other observation is a lack of feedback in the scroll wheel. In the old wheel mice you could feel a slight notch at each increment that you rolled the wheel. Not so with this one. So this too takes a bit to get used to when estimating how far you need to roll the wheel in order to go half-way down a page. But those are truly minor quibbles. The installation was a breeze, and it does go easy on the AA batteries. The tilt wheel is a bit of a novelty, but it actually does come in handy on occasion. As far as optical mice go, it is very responsive. You certainly can't go wrong on the price. If you've never used an optical mouse, imagine never having to clean crud and dust bunnies out from inside around the mouse ball. Overall, I'd say if you're in the market for a new mouse and don't need buttons all over it (like the more expensive wireless Intellimouse), snap this one up.
18 Excellent value
Bought this great mouse in January and although I use it approximately an hour a day, maybe two....the original batteries are still going strong. Very easy to use and a pleasure not having the wire in the way.
19 Crummy
This mouse is the most awkward and non-ergonomic mouse of any of the MS products I have ever used. It has a weird, tapered, bulbous base that forces your fingers into positions that are not natural. It actually feels more comfortable if you grab it backwards.

My simple MS Intellimouse Optical (corded) mouse blows this one away in shear comfort.

The side-scrolling wheel takes up too much real estate on the top of the mouse. The wheel action offers no positive feedback if you rely on that feature in games. I do.
The wheel button includes a feature to toggle through open applications. First of all, I usually have 10 things open at once so its faster to use the taskbar. Secondly, the pressure required to activate the button is brutal.

I was a bit dismayed to find that the driver was not Win98 compatible. All over box it says 'Windows and MAC'. Only in the fine print on the bottom of the box does it say Win2000 or WinXP only! My bad for not reading every square inch of the box.

I'm a big fan of Microsoft products in general. They USUALLY do their homework, but this one must have been designed by the new guy. The smooth scrolling works great in documents and web pages. But that feature alone does not compensate for the wack ergonomics.

20 Best Mouse I have ever used
This mouse is very responsive, great feel in your hand, excellent battery life and looks great.

I have had this mouse at work for 5 months and the battery level is still almost full and I use it 8 hours a day 5 days a week. I used the high end logitech and the shape just didnt feel a quarter as good as this mouse. The sideways scroll is great for use in excel spreadsheets but nothing else really.

People this mouse is not for a laptop, the size of the receiver would defeat the purpose of use with a laptop there are better solutions available with smaller wireless mice for laptops.

This mouse is great in games, yes the scroll button is hard at first to swtich weapons but when you get used to it, it is smooth and very nice to use.

I would definately buy another one of these mice.

21 Excellent product!
First, let me address a couple of issues that previous reviewers have raised.

The drivers: Yes, you do have to unload the existing mouse/touchpad drivers if it conflicts with this one, but that does not make your old mouse/touchpad non-functional. You may just lose some special functions, but the basic functions should still work just fine.

The transceiver part: Did you expect that 'wireless' meant 'magical'?? Of course there's gotta be something for this mouse to communicate with, and that is a mouse sized piece with a 3-4 foot cord. This can go almost anywhere near your computer (away from the monitor & CPU preferably). Just set it and forget it. Mine required no frequency setting at all, it just worked.

There is no ball, only an optical sensor which looks at the surface you use it on to determine if its moving. It must be used on a surface that has some texture/pattern to it. A mirror or highly polished surface, or something completely plain (like a solid colored counter) won't work properly. But you can use it on fabric (pant leg, shirt, bedsheet, etc), your hand, your dog, etc. ALMOST anywhere.

The sensitivity is great, the scroll wheel has some tension to it, so it doesn't just spin like the old versions would. Its sort of like having a car with some road feel to the steering vs. one that you can steer with one finger. It gives you better control to have that little bit of tension, and I like no clicky noise.

Ergonomically, I think it is shaped well for my large hand. Smaller hands may not work as well (e.g. kids, petites) reaching the buttons, etc. Uses 2 AA batteries, which I think is great. Easy to find and cheap when you need to replace them. No waiting to recharge or $10 special batteries to buy.

All in all a great wireless optical mouse. I highly recommend it.

22 This is a Kids Opinion
yea, im a kid, and my dad wouldnt buy me a new mouse since he said the one we had (wired, not opitcial) was still working, and he was right, so i bought this mouse because bluetooth was MAD expensive, and i installed it

and it worked. however, the next day, i tried it and it just all of a sudden screwed up. the pointer started getting laggy, and the mouse still was MAD ssensitive, making me lose in cs ...like 0:5 ratio!!!!!

and this is what i say, DONT BUY IT

that cheep tilt wheel thing was so stupid, you barely need it, and the mouse design isnt good for the "right" part of your hand

-bad mouse
-bad design
-overly sensitive
-sux for laptops
-tilt wheel is just another one of those gimmicks (it works, but you rarely need it)
-SUX

23 Nice mouse :)
Nice mouse, feels very good in your hand, smooth movement and precise. Only the slightest hint of lag, noticeable in games but non-existent anywhere else. Tilt wheel is a useless gimmick, even a disadvantage. The whole wheel feels weird with fluid STEPLESS rotation which makes it TOTALLY NOT suitable for FPS games: it's overly sensitive, so sometimes you TOUCH it by accident and find the next (or previous) weapon in your hands, very frustrating in the middle of a fight, and because if the same reasons, you can't really make use of the middle mouse button in games (or more likely anywhere), the button needs a very firm press to begin with which is discouraging. I would say the whole wheel (scroll, tilt and button) are the mouse's drawback, may be the only. M$ should ditch the gimmick wheel in favor of something more practical and pleasant to use. How about the wheel that was on the original intellimouse with intellieye? IMO that is THE wheet to beat.
24 unbelievable bad
Usually I read some reviews online regarding a product before buying it. But this time I did not...I owned the "regular" MS Optical mouse since 2000 and when it gave up (left button is not functional anymore) a week ago I could think of any other replacement than another MS optical mouse...it was that good.
ALso, I wanted to go big:) and buy a wireless, thinking that less cable arround my laptop will look and feel great.
BUT:
- it works if you "plug&play", just that the sideways scrolling function is not recognized and it will not work. If you want to make it work, you have to install the software...BUT SURPRIZE...it will install only if you uninstall the touchapd software of you laptop...go figure...
- opening the package brought another SURPRIZE...it's wireless alright, but the other end which connects to the laptop/desktop is composed from a "mouse" sized thingie (the wireless receiver) with a 1m or so of cable attached to it...thus my intention of relieving my desk of cables was not a succes.
- installed the software, rebooted the laptop...and started to...well TRY to use the mouse...to understand my expression, please remember a BALL! mouse...BUT A BAD ONE on a dirty surface (without a mouse pad)...yeap, it was that bad. After an hour of trying to change the channels I gave up, also because my hand was killing me.
It worked only once...in 2 full weeks of use...
It is a great looking mouse...but I don't know why is this BAD!...
MICROSOFT...please make a driver which will not conflict with the laptop's touchpads, make the mouse work like a "wired mouse" and most important...try to build a "laptop version" of it, without that second "mouse" receiver and the meters of cable hanging...
Don't change the looks...it looks nice but I needed something which works...so I went back to the store and bought a "wired" Optical Intelly Mouse for almost 30% less...and it worked like a charm from the moment I sticked it in.
25 If you plan to use this with a laptop, read this.
I purchased this yesterday and returned it today. I wanted to use this with my Thinkpad. I could not load the driver and application to use the additional features (tilt wheel) because it conflicts with the Thinkpad touchpad driver. On Microsoft support site, it states the fact that it conflicts with some popular touchpads. I was disappointed that Microsoft forgot to print that on the outside of the box and wasted my time. Also, what is the deal with this scroll wheel? It is sticky and hard to move. I replaced it with a Logitech MX700, plugged it in, loaded the driver and bingo... It is perfect!
26 Unbelievably bad
This is a horrible mouse. The motion is jerky and imprecise (using it with an Aluminum Powerbook), and the effort of trying to control it causes shoulder pain after any prolonged use. I tried to get my wife to take it to use with her Windows 2000 machine, and she hated it just as much. I plan to throw it away. And leave it to Microsoft, in the age of Bluetooth, to make a wireless mouse that requires a big mouse-shaped dongle that plugs into the computer with a wire. Duh.
27 Warning! Worked for a while then sucks!
I bought this wireless mouse a few months ago and have had numerous problems. This mouse just plain hasn't worked for me. I've tried every type of surface known to man and the mouse still has problems working properly. Buttons don't work, my left-right scroll doesn't work, pointer doesn't move correctly. My old Microsoft wired optical mouse was fine on the same surface. I seem to have good connection and battery, but can't continue to fight with this thing. I'm plugging in my wired mouse. I do have a Logitech wireless at home and it works great. Make sure you really shop around before you buy.
28 Burned Up
Received the mouse March 10, 2004 and it quit March 21, 2004. When replacing the batteries as though that was the problem, it smelled burned inside. Big disappointment in quality.
29 Tilt feature cannot be configured
Mouse works well overall; but the tilt feature cannot be configured by the user (unlike the other buttons).
30 Cheap Wireless Goodness
A surprisingly good wireless offering considering it's price. I have yet to experience any connectivity problems, and it has a decent range. The most surprising aspect is its accuracy. I have yet to experience the lack of accuracy that a lot of people complain of with other wireless mice that are even more expensive than this one. It's also pretty light considering you have to stick two AA batteries in there.

A surprsingly good offering from Micro$oft, considering its price. Highly recommended.

31 Nice product
I have only been using this mouse for a few days now and I already really like it!

It's a little larger and weighs about the same as the standard corded Microsoft mouse that I had been using and feels a little more comfortable.

The optical feature alone is much better than the ball. It's much smoother and I don't have to spend time cleaning the rubber ball and wheels.

The package comes with the mouse, a receiver that plugs into either a ps/2 or USB, (it comes with an adapter)two Energizer AA batteries, the software disk, and booklet.

All you have to do is install the software (which takes a couple of minutes), restart the computer, insert the batteries, plug in the receiver and it's ready to use.

It is great not having a cable to get in the way and I can store the mouse in the desk drawer when not in use. The mouse will go into a power saving mode after a short time of not being used. There is no on / off switch to forget to shut off.

The middle scroll wheel is also a lot smoother than on the standard mouse.

Overall I am happy with this product and think that it is worth every penny.

*** UPDATE ***

After a little over a year, the mouse still works great. I have not had any problems with it and it has not needed a battery change yet.
32 Perhaps the worst mouse i ever had!!!
I bought this mouse as part of the wireless desktop 2.
I'm extremely happy with my new keyboard but i really hate this mouse. it's bulky, it's slow and the middle mouse button requires actuall pressure until you here a click for it to work properly.I will finish saying that the tilt feature is probably the most useless gimmick ever.I love microsoft mice i always had a microsoft mouse and my favorite one is still the blue optical USB one. I prefer a mouse that fits comfortably in my hand and feels like a natural extension. no matter how much time i gave this WOM2 it still feels like an uncomfortable piece of junk.
33 high quality build and performance, worth your money
This product is worth the 35 bucks I spent on it. It's beautiful and it works. Just install the software, plug it in, and you're set. It performs just like a wired optical mouse. It feels a little heavier but it's something that you can get used to over time. No lags, no "wake up" time when you move it really quick after long periods of rest (despite the power savings mode). Now my left-hand-mouse-user dad can move the mouse over anytime without pulling the cord. This is how my old mouse got damaged. The only complaint I have is that it feels quite awkward to press the middle button, probably because of the new feature that enables the wheel to be tilted left and right.
34 Works With Mac OS 8.6!!
I love this mouse! I originally got it for my Compaq P4 running Windows XP, but I found out that it works on my 98 iMac running Mac OS 8.6. I didn't even need to install the drivers. I plugged it into the keyboard USB slot and it was ready to go. You gotta love Apple. The only downside is that you can only use the right and left buttons on the classic Mac OS. I love the design of the mouse as well. The color of the mouse does not exactly match the picture. The color has more of a steel/blue metallic look. This is the perfect mouse for everyday users who want a little style.
35 A fantastic product
This product outperforms any standard mouse hands down. It is responsive, quick, and very easy to use. The cordless feature is very nice because you don't have to worry about constantly readjusting the cord so that it doesn't get twisted or tangled and interfere with your usage. Also, the wireless receiver is very powerful and can be placed several feet away without sacrificing any functionality. Although there are more expensive models for sale, this version is very good and is definitely a wise investment if you spend any amount of time surfing the internet or using a computer.
36 MS Wireless Optical Mouse (Steel Blue) vs Logitech MX700
Reviewer: jbw98ga from Martin, GA United States
It is my good fortune to use a Logitech MX700 mouse at work and a Microsoft Wireless Optical (Steel Blue) mouse at home. Like many reviewers, I initially found them both to be too large and heavy. But after making the transition, a "standard" size mouse now seems small, awkward, and toy-like. Of the two, the MX700 is noticeably heavier. However, one should consider that it is an ultra precise pointing device, so not only is the weight comfortable once one has gotten used to it, but it is also an aid in performing precision work (just as professional photographers often prefer heavier cameras over lighter units). I have been using the MX700 for over a year and the MS mouse for about two months now. I had no installation problems with either unit and have experienced no problems in their operation. I have not yet had to replaces the batteries of either. I find both to be smooth, accurate, and error free. I am not a gamer, so I cannot speak to the appropriateness of either unit for such use. One distinction between the two is that the MX700's scroll wheel gives a ratchet-like click while the MS mouse is unbelievably smooth. Such preferences are highly subjective, but I prefer the feedback of the MX700's click. My major complaint with the MS mouse is that it's "glide" on the mousepad is not very smooth, no matter what mousepad or surface is used. I have gotten used to this, but if the prices were equal, this issue would weigh heavily against the MS mouse.
There is much to like in both of these units and the purchase choice could hinge on either personal preference or on cost factors. My "price is no object" winner is the Logitech MX700, based on my perception of superior performance, near perfect ergonomics, and the fact that it is rechargeable. However, at the time of this writing it is significantly more expensive than the MS mouse (75% more at Amazon.com). In my opinion one truly cannot make a bad choice in choosing between these units. I believe that the MX700 is absolutely the best mouse on the market, but the MS mouse is good enough to warrant consideration and to win the decision if money is an overriding issue.
37 avoid Microsoft mice like the plague!
I will never again buy another Microsoft Mouse! I received one of these as a Christmas gift, and Microsoft has changed the Intellipoint software so that you cannot map different keyboard keys to the buttons. You are obligated to choose from the "dumbed-down" list of commands that Microsoft has deemed "useful to everyone." I had an earlier version of this product a few years ago, and it was great for CAD, etc. because I could program the mouse buttons to work in specific programs, but now that appears impossible. Also, the "tilt-wheel" is useless in my opinion. I can already tell I will get chafing on my fingers from pushing the stupid wheel side-to-side. What's wrong with two wheels?
38 Beware the tilting wheel
In other respects this mouse is pretty good. However people who use the wheel as a button (for example, opening new tabs in Mozilla), should know that while that capability is still there, it is tricky to use. The tilt functionality is triggered instead, more often than not. It is very hard to press the wheel down perfectly vertically, so as not to tilt the wheel.

The tilt functionality itself is not that useful anyway, so on the whole this is something of a backward step.

Apart from that, the mouse has good ergonomics, and tracks the movement quickly. I wish they did a left handed version of their top of the line mouse (the Explorer), or failing that added more buttons to the symmetrical models such as this one.
