Turn your desktop into a vibrant, clutter-free space with Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse Blue. Wireless technology, a wider, clear scroll wheel, and signature red optical glow combine in a fun design.
Microsoft's Wireless Optical Mouse Blue features the best of all worlds--no cord, no ball, and comfort that is almost legendary with Microsoft mice.
Two recently introduced mouse technologies come together in this mouse. As the name suggests, it uses a low-power wireless link to transmit its movements to Windows or the Mac OS--the device is compatible with both platforms. The mouse also has no ball, instead using a high-intensity LED and optical sensor to detect movement.
While primarily a USB device, this mouse can also be used with the supplied converter with an older PS/2 mouse port. It connects into most Windows-based PCs without need for separate drivers. Plug it in, Windows sees it, and within a few seconds it's controlling the screen pointer. It is compatible with Windows 98 and later.
Two AA batteries (included) power the Wireless Optical Mouse Blue's optical sensor. The mouse effectively takes a series of pictures of whatever surface it's moved over--no mouse pad necessary--comparing each with the previous one to detect motion. The use of an optical sensor means the only moving parts on the mouse are its two buttons and its clear scroll wheel. The "blue" in the mouse's name describes the sides and back of its body and an inset around the scroll wheel. Its top surface is silver.
The mouse has a good range--we were able to get a response from the screen pointer at a distance of over 10 feet. It communicates with a small, oval receiver, also supplied, which draws its power from the USB or PS/2 socket into which it's plugged. --Simon Williams, Amazon.co.uk
Turn your desktop into a vibrant, clutter-free space with Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse Blue. Wireless technology; a wider, clear scroll wheel; and signature red optical glow combine in a fun design. Comfortably shaped for the right or left hand, this mouse works up to six feet away from the receiver and adds sparkle to your desktop with its silver metallic top and astral blue accents.
1 Worse investment in my life.
I bought this mouse in a store... and when installed it initally worked fine. Then slowly it stopped working and would work if you havent touched it for an hour and then it when you started using it , it would work for 30 seconds and stop responding.
I had no choice but to attach my old corded mouse. I thought maybe it conflicted with my computer. But I get the same problem when I hook it up with my laptop and a friend's PC.
In short this product is a waste of time. Normally I do bash Microsoft software products but thanks to Microsoft hardware products, they fuel themselves for more bashing.
2 Not recommend this mouse
1.) run out of battery too fast
2.) only worked for 1 month.
3 2 mice for the price of 1?
I bought this mouse because I have been using Microsoft mice since the mid-90's. I've moved from ball-mouse to scroll-wheel mouse to optical mouse -- they're ergonomically shaped and they all performed flawlessly even without installing the included drivers.
Alas, not so with the wireless versions. Although the ergonomics are still there, the performance leaves a lot to be desired. The first one I brought home died after a week -- I thought the batteries ran out but replacing with fresh Duracells didn't help. The compartment for batteries is poorly designed, making inserting and especially removing batteries a chore. The door of the battery compartment is difficult to pop open.
The second mouse? Well, it's the one I exchanged. But I could've easily mistaken the transceiver (being the same size) for the mouse itself! Other mouse manufacturers have shrunk the size of their transceiver down to that of a USB dongle. Why can't Microsoft with its proclaimed innovation do better?
Now for the worst part... Even with the installed driver, the pointer-tracking lags behind your wrist movement. For some reason, it is not as responsive as its wired cousin. When viewing large documents (long Web page or MS Word document), the mouse becomes totally lethargic -- often not moving at all and requiring many clicks to activate a button or scrollbar.
Since I can't return it because the box has been opened, I'm basically stuck with it. Good thing I haven't given away my corded version. Recommendation: if you like Microsoft mice because of their ergonomical shape, stay with the corded version of optical mouse -- Microsoft hasn't quite figured out wireless technology.
4 I use this mouse
This mouse works great for me. I hated to have that wire in my way all the time. The only problem is that you have to have batteries so I use rechargeable ones.
5 Could be better.
I've had this mouse for quite awhile now, and the thing that bothers me most about it, is the fact that I need to replace the batteries about once to twice a month! Depending on how much I'm using it. And also, getting the batteries in and out is a pain..I don't know how microsoft could have missed that specific problem when they were testing it. I guess its pretty much worth its price because most wireless mice are a lot more. So for the most part i'm happy with it because I don't want to spend more than 30 dollars for a mouse.
6 forget it
Pointer jumps off screen constantly - major problem. If you like gaming - don't get this mouse. If you like frustration - this thing is perfect for you. Can this mouse really be called a "precision pointing device" when the pointer disppears every few minutes? I think not. I was much happier with the Microsoft corded Optical Intellimouse, which only cost me 1/2 as much as this.
7 not bad, could be better
I liked this mouse for it's form factor. I think the left/right hand design is quite good. I think the one real problem is that the base station is almost as big as a mouse itself. It is not ideal for a laptop, but i only use it when i have a table to sit down at anyway. Bundling up the cord with a velcro wire tie works well enough for me.
Many people complain about the mouse being jumpy. To solve this problem, first try using a lighter mouse pad or surface. If the surface you are using is varried, the mouse will jump. a sheet of paper or light book cover works for me. If that dosn't work, try cheking your batteries.
8 It may be microsoft, but this isn't their best.
I've had the Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse Blue for about 3 months now, and I have been getting very annoyed. It runs off 2 AA batteries. They only last about a month, and that seems bad, but try replacing them. If you can even manage to somehow wedge the batteries out of its compartment, you will most likely have to clean your hands off from the scrapes when trying to get it open. I recommend using a strong thin pen to pry the batteries out. Once you get them out and put new ones in, you will probably have to fidget with them for a bit to try and get the optical light back on. Another thing I have found annoying, are the glitches. Unfortunately there aren't any wireless mice out there that don't. On a lighter note, the mouse is very responsive, and although it few, minor glitches, and the fact it doesn't have the advanced web browsing buttons
that some mice have, it operates very well, especially for its price. I, personally, would recommend a rechargable Logitech mouse. Hope this helps!
9 Great Purchase For My Laptop
I wanted a wireless mouse for my laptop and I was looking for one to go with. This is the one to go with it's comfortable and easy-to setup. ...
10 Cheap, with one minor installation problem
Wireless is definitely the way to go. I've been looking for a cheap way to get into the wireless arena and fortunately they decided to drop the price a bit on the MS Wireless Mouse Blue.
Ergonomically, it feels decent enough, and seems to be made of decent, durable material. It glides smoothly with nary a hiccup onscreen (except when first waking up). The batteries are a little difficult to install; one needs to be almost jammed in for it to go in the slot.
Installation took me two hours though: I plugged it into my laptop's PS/2 port and, after installing Intellipoint 4.1, and after several tries of the install it refused to recognize that I had a wireless, optical mouse (no scroll wheel, etc.). Apparently, the touchpad driver of my laptop was linked to the PS/2 port (which, I was to find, was exclusively for connecting an extra keyboard). Plugging it into the USB port solved the problem with detection.
Oh, also Intellipoint refused to install itself after I updated the touchpad drivers. So I had to uninstall the touchpad drivers so IP wouldn't complain, install IP 4.1, then reinstall the touchpad drivers AFTER so IP wouldn't notice. It's been running fine with no conflicts whatsoever. Everyone's happy, and so am I. It took me two hours to get happy, but it happened.
11 Very good purchase
I have been using the wireless mouse since January of 2003. That is almost 9 months. I have had to change the batteries twice. I use the mouse mostly for games, and only in the evenings and weekends, but is has always worked very well. I get a message on the computer when the batteries are getting low, and I just change them. It is so nice not to have to worry about cords. I am also used to switching hands when using a mouse to keep my hands from tiring. This mouse is very usable with either hand, and it is so easy to switch when you don't have to worry about cords or a mouse pad.
12 Stay away
This is a very inexpensive mouse and I know why. Because you will spend a fortune on batteries. Also, mouse jumps to corners about once a minute, and is hard to control. A dud.
13 great mouse, little larger than planned
I'm using this mouse with my laptop. I'm very happy with the ability to move around without any wires. The part that connects to the computer is almost the same size as the mouse, so if you have limited desk space, it's something to think about. It has a long wire, though, and is supposed to be at least 12" away from the mouse that you use, so you could probably put it on the floor or on a shelf or something.
Another thing you may want to know if you travel alot - I read in the user's manual that it is a transmitting device. So, on airplanes you have to remove the batteries from the mouse. Luckily, this is easy to do, just one more thing to think about as you board. There are two AA batteries.
I was showing some pictures to friends and was able to use the wireless mouse from about 4 feet away from the PC. That was a great bonus.
Make sure you go through the setup for "Set Orientation" - before using this, I had some problems, but afterwards it has been perfect. I use it daily for work and have had it for about 3 weeks. Not one problem.
It's a simple MS Mouse design, so it's not the most ergonomic, but still comfortable.
Overall, I was pleased enough to look it up on Amazon and rate it pretty highly.
14 VERY NICE LADY WOULD BUY FROM HER AGAIN>>>>>>>>>>>>
VERY FAST, SERVICE NICE,WILL BUY FROM AGAIN .
I THINK YOU,HAVE A GOOD SERVICE.
ONCE AGAIN THANK YOU
DEBRA HARTSON
15 Used it for 2 weeks and then it Died
It was working fine for two weeks, and then dead. kaput. muerto. nothing I did could get it started. Should've read the other reviews. It seems it is a common problem. A waste of money.
16 Just awful
I don't know what is wrong. This mouse is jittery and difficult to control. Back it went.
17 A so-so mouse
Some minor problems:
1. Screeching sound developed on the left button after a day of useage. Fixed by taking apart the mouse, and put some lube on where the button contacts/rubs the chassie.
2. Mouse won't power up unless I put a set of fully charged battery. My guess is that it has a higher oprating voltage requirement. Fix: Charge battery before use, or use alkaline.
3. Battery is hard to remove, the door opening is just too small. You can easilly slide it in with an angle, but very hard to do it in reverse. I ended up with my rechargeable batteries scratched(not that I care really).
4. Skin on my hand some times got cought up between the mouse and the table surface. This sounds weird I know, but if you take a look at some other Logitech mouse, you'd noticed that the shape contours sharply inward the mouse body near bottom, and that prevents this from happening. I don't know if this make any sense, but compare those mice yourself and you'll see what I mean.
5. Lots of user reports reliability problem. Microsoft issued a recall on some of their ealier Intellimouse, So I don't really trust their stuff.
6. A bit on the heavy side. I do get used to it overtime however.
Some good things:
1. Unlike some Logitch optical mice, this thing don't light up the whole room like a Chrismas tree when you use it. The light output from the LED is well covered by the non-transparent mouse body. I hate a growing mouse in dark environments.
2. A very Logitech-like button/wheel feel and sound gives clear feedback.
3. Good long range.
4. Looks good.
5. Cheap.
bottom line:
Too much hassle over a simple device. Go with a Logitech insted of this one.
18 Don't spend your money on this one!
Don't spend your hard earned money on this junk, I cannot trust another Microsoft mouse ever again. I just returned this newly bought wireless mouse to Fry's for another one (should have saved the box! I would have gotten a refund). And guess what? Same problem! The left and right buttons only work when they want to!

20 FREEDOM
I LOVE THIS MOUSE! I no longer have to tug at a stupid cord that is inevitably hung up around some other stupid cord! It is also much more responsive than any other mouse I've used. Very easy to install. Definitely recommend if you do any kind of graphic work.
21 decent 3 button optical mouse
I've been using this mouse for 4 months at work now. I noticed the mouse pointer getting erratic, but after changing the batteries it works as good as before.
The mouse feels comfortable in my hand. I like the grooved scroll wheel which has just the right amount of resistance for easy and accurate scrolling. This mouse is not the same as the wired MS blue mouse (which I don't recommend for extended use). The mouse also matches well with my MS Natural Multimedia Keyboard.
A mouse button on the side would be nice, but if you are looking for a basic 3 button wireless optical mouse, this mouse will do!
22 Good mouse
Bought two of these mice and have had no problems. Feel is comfortable for medium-sized mits. Can't speak as to other sized hands (only my own). Tried it on almost every surface except see-through glass top and it works. Pointer is accurate and fast but you can modify your settings as you wish. It has a nice look, range is good (tested 3 metres so far), battery life on ordinary batteries is about 2 months depending on usage (I use mine at the office every day constantly).
Only wish it had a side thumb scroll wheel/button.
23 STEER CLEAR
...I used it for a while and when i would play games the mouse would jump and even surfing the net was a difficult task. You get what you pay for with a cordless mouse. For a cordless mouse equal to a 30 dollar cord optical mouse you would need to buy a cordless worth 80. Dont buy a cheap cordless mouse they just dont work. I recomend a logitech mx300 or a dual optical you will then get precise mousing for the same price. THIS MOUSE DOES NOT OUTPERFORM A BALL MOUSE so unless you want to sit there ignorantly pretending the mouse actually performs well as you get out kick of seeing a cordless optical mouse YOU SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRDOUCT. BUY LOGITECH CORD OPTICAL YOU WONT REGRET IT! IF YOU ARE A GAMER YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY WITH THIS MOUSE! SO IN SUMMARY STICK WITH YOUR BALL MOUSE OVER THIS PIECE OF JUNK.
24 Poor experience
Personally, I had a bad experience with this product. Everything was great on the first day. The mouse was wonderfully ergonomic, the colour was awesome, it matched my mousepad and desktop beautifully. However, the second day, I noticed a few things that were contrary to what I expected. First of all, the mouse's range wasn't even nearly close to the advertised 6 feet. I found I couldn't use it beyond a maximum of 2 feet away from the receiver. This was when there was absolutely nothing between the mouse and the receiver. Never mind that, but I noticed that the left mouse button squeaked every time I pressed it. And this was on the second day after I bought it. I hadn't subjected the mouse to any impact whatsoever.
Maybe this was just an isolated case, judging from all the reviews I read about it. However, due to my experience, I had no choice but to trade this model for a Logitech Wireless MouseMan Optical.
25 Jumping around
The mouse is not working after 1 month of ownership. Open it up, found that it uses quad-coil IF method for the the wireless receiver, which is susceptible to shock or vibration. Don't buy it.
26 Less than ideal
I bought the mouse almost a year ago because it was stylish and a good value for a wireless optical. However, I would say that it is somewhat frustrating to own the mouse. It worked great for the first few weeks. My first clue that it was less than ideal was that it ran out of battery and began to act erratically after just 5 weeks on fresh brand name batteries. I became accustomed to this so that every month or so, I would know to change batteries when the pointer began to become jumpy or lag, making web surfing very annoying. Then, even with fresh batteries, the mouse pointer began to skip and lag. After a frustrating trial with Microsoft and searching the web, I realized that you have to periodically reset the channels by clicking on the buttons on the mouse and the remote receiver. Also, using the USB connection makes a big difference.
It's just frustrating to have this mouse act erratically on such a frequent basis. For gamers, this mouse would be a disaster. For web surfers and office users, the mouse is occasionally irritating.
With foreknowledge a year ago, I would not have purchased this product.
27 DONT BUY THIS, IT DOESN'T FEEL RIGHT!
Read the other reviews about the mouse pointer jumping to the bottom corners of the screen. This mouse just FEELS wrongs to use, I threw mine in a drawer and now use my old Microsoft Mouse. This disappointed me, because I have always loved Microsoft Mice, and have an IntelliEye mouse at work that is the best ... Spend more money and buy another mouse, and dont throw out the packaging!
28 Don't get it
I've had a couple of these mice and they both went bad after about 5 or 6 months. They just seem to stop working and changing the batteries does not help. I just stick with a cheaper, faster, and more reliable wired mouse now.
29 Nice operation once you get used to it
I have had my mouse for about 3 months. It used up the first set of batteries in about a month and started acting up. I replaced them with rechargeable alkaline and they seem to be better. Have had none of the problems others described, but I did NOT install the software. Am using Windows XP Pro and let it recognize the mouse automatically. The feel is a bit different than the older Microsoft ergonomic design, but it did not take me long to adjust to it. The whell has a very good feel to it; much better than older designs. The range of operation is over 3 feet. My base is behind my computer about 2.5 feet from the mouse. Overall, I like it quite a lot.
30 The mouse that couldn't
Don't waste your money, the product is still in its infancy. It is made of cheap plastic, batteries (which it consumes faster than cheese) are hard to replace.
The response of the mouse is poor and lags as you move it around. It doesn't know how to accelerate properly. And if the signal goes out of sync with the base unit you can expect frustration getting them to talk to each other. Stick to a wired optical mouse.
31 Wish I had read reviews before I bought it!
After having spent years loving all of my nice (old-fashioned) MS mice, and being an avid user of practically ALL of their software (OS, development, Office, BackOffice, etc.), I am so unimpressed. I wish I had read the reviews about this thing. When my problem cropped up on my second day, I did a Google search only to find almost everyone who bought it wishing that they hadn't. Me too. It does this thing where the clicks won't register unless it's also in motion... sometimes. As the other reviews preach, I can expect to go through and uninstall Intellipoint 4.1, delete lots of stuff from the registry (this is also Microsoft's answer), and then it will probably work for a couple more days before I just throw it away. $... out the window.
And this thing is still on the shelves!!
32 Sub-par quality
I have to say - I'm pretty unimpressed with this mouse. I made the mistake of buying it from a store without first checking its reviews here. Two major complaints:
- Its bulky with the batteries. I have used a microsoft optical mouse (with wires) at work, and this one feels like three to four times heavier.
- The movement is clumsy: for example, while playing solitaire, the cursor moves to the close-button on its own. Its pretty annoying even for day-to-day work.
I'm no microsoft basher, but this product falls well below their standards. I've used their trackball intellimouse as well as optical wheel mouse, and both were fantastic.
Some reviewers here have written stuff like - it works fine if you dont use it on reflective surfaces like polished wood. Hello! you mean I should not use it on almost any computer rack? And why is it that only cordless optical mice have this 'feature'. I could use the optical wheel mouse on the same surface without ANY problems.
There are a number of folks who switched to this mouse from a corded-trackball mouse. Of course they are going to love it! Optical mice are way better than trackball ones. So if you're one of them, upgrade to a corded-optical mouse, and you'll be very happy.
Thankfully the store had a 30-day return policy. I returned it after just two days. I'm trying an optical intellimouse next...
33 Love the mouse
I've had the mouse a while now and haven't had any of the problems mentioned prior. I use my computers mainly for gaming so I was hesitant at first of getting Wireless, but I wish I had bought earlier! The mouse works flawlessly with Windows XP and all my games, including FPS games where mouse is critical such as Unreal 2, Splinter Cell etc. The ONLY thing I'll miss with this mouse are buttons 3 and 4 I had on my old IntelliMouse Optical. I'll probably be upgrading soon to the Optical Desktop Pro keyboard/mouse combo and giving the Blue to a friend or using it on another PC.
34 Steer clear
This mouse worked well for the first couple of weeks. Then, I unable to bring up Windows on my computer (I have XP-Pro). Found out it was due to the mouse. IntelliPoint 4.1 software was uninstalled and reinstalled. Worked fine, for about 2 days. Now, everytime it locks me out of Windows, I have to shut down, unplug the mouse, start up, then plug mouse back in. Sometimes right button won't work. Not worth your money, trust me.
35 A review about the mouse, not your computer's problems
I got this mouse about two months ago. I love it, especially because I can use it anywhere without that annoying cord getting all tangled up everywhere. I have had absolutely no problems with response time, excessive weight, or any of the other things that pop up in some of the reviews around here.
And, let me add, if there's one thing I hate, it's when some nerd comes along and rakes a product over the coals simply because it "didn't install correctly" or "the computer crashes every time I use it," or "it never worked." What they never seem to realize is that these are problems with THEIR COMPUTER, not the hardware or software under consideration. (I might add, as a footnote, that I have a standard Win98 system, and had no problems whatsoever running it off of the USB connection.)
The only complaint is battery life. Perhaps the batteries that came with it are just cheap, but the mouse it already starting to get a little jumpy (after two months). I can put up with it, thanks to the cordlessness, because when it gets jumpy I just move it on top of my desk, closer to the receiver, and it works fine. It's not jumpy all the time. And I have found that where I keep it on my keyboard tray, about 4 feet from the receiver, works fine when the batteries are OK. The only occasions when it gets jumpy at that distance is if something on the desk is positioned just right so it obstructs it. I'm not sure exactly how that works, but it is rarely a problem. Just pick up the mouse, move it somewhere else, and continue your work.
So, overall this is a great mouse. Relatively short battery life (which is understood with most cordless devices) is no excuse not to make your life much more convenient with this handy little gadget.
36 Safe the Box for your Customer Return
After reading all the reviews on both this product and the wireless optical Explorer (which I found to be better ergonomically), I bought both. I have not had the wild jumping some of the others have mentioned, however, I've had to return both products because of a seemingly smaller but more sinister problem.
I really desired a wireless mouse device and I'm within two feet of the receiver and use a mouse pad. Having two batteries in the device created no issue. The issues is this: even without experiencing the wild movements others described, these two pointing devices are simply not "exact" in their positioning. Period. Wild movements would have been easy to detect. It took me about two hours of use of these two devices to figure out something wasn't quite right and was requiring extra effort.
If you do even a moderate amount of work in Excel, PowerPoint, or lay-out softwares like Adobe or Corel, you will be very frustrated, very quickly (within hours). In Excel for example, trying to select cells and move them, was difficult. In the lay-out programs, trying to grab the sides of things and change their shape, took 3x as long. When one is used to zipping around with a corded mouse, while spending hours in front of the computer working, even slight inconsistencies can drive one nuts. Surfing the web and selecting and clicking on pages, became a chore too. I read all of the directions, tried numerous variations, and utilized several options available in the software, all to no avail. Once again, I did't have the wild experiences others have mentioned, but the "inexactness" of these two pointing devices would double or triple my daily time spent on everyday office computer use. Who needs that? These mice are supposed to make things easier. If you don't mind trading ease-of-use and mobility for a cleaner desktop, buy on . . . but save the packaging for at least two weeks.
37 DONT EVEN BOTHER
If they gave me a 0-star option I would have taken it...I couldnt even get the piece of junk to work...emailed Microsoft and never got a response...IF YOU BOUGHT ONE CANCEL IT OR SEND IT BACK...typical Microsoft method to make money by selling junk
38 stops working after a while.
This mouse worked great (while it was working). Now it will not click on anything without a lot of multiple double clicks, or clicking and draging slowly. Optical is nice, but I reccomend buying a logitec ( I have heard no complaints about them) or just buy a corded optical.
I got this as a gift for a friend (Thanks Microsoft). Now it does not work for them and I can't find any information on the microsoft web site about how to fix it. I have updated the driver, put new batteries in, and it still does not work. Even if I do find a fix for it, is it really worth all this tr
39 Give it a try
I have this mouse now for about a week and i have no problem until now. First days are great, It jumped the first time i used but that is because i use a notebook, which is not hard and flat as a pad, so i fixed that problem. now its been a week and i have a problem with my left button. Sometimes my click wont go thru, I need to click several times just to make it work. I thought the mouse was doomed and my 30 bucks are doomed too. I replace the batteries though and its back to its original healthy form. I just hope it wont have the same problem again, that scared me! It still make its screeching noises, not so good for what they call ergonomic design what so ever. Another thing i hate is the jumbo receiver which is as big as a mouse too. Like having two mouse instead of one. Microsoft needs to fix this problem. overall i give it an average rating since i really like the way the scrolling works. so give it a try, if u dont like it then return, just dont throw the box and barcode.
40 MOUSE DOESNT WORK
The first mouse that came simply did not work which I had to return to Amazon.com(which I will say was very accomodating). Then the second mouse worked well at first but then the batteries kept on giving out. I had to keep on moving the batteries to get the power going. I will return my second microsoft mouse and buy a logitech.
41 Soft and delicate... a lady?
Well I got this for my new computer and on first try...it was so delicate that if u drop it then I am sure it's finito. This mouse had a terrible squeaky noise everytime I pressed the mouse ..luckily I just sprayed some WD40 (NOT RECOMENDED AT ALL) through the small hole and then it went away overnight. Now it works GREAT. It has a very light feel to it which I personally like.
My wife says that it's a "lady" mouse. Thats for sure as it lacks the weight and bulk of my other Logitech ELITE mouse. In all I would recommend this as it fairly cheap and pretty to look at... My friends have been 50-50 with regards to gaming...some like it others don;'t ... I like it for its lightweight and ease of use. Once u get used to it then it's REALLY good...
42 Massively annoying
As I struggled using this microsoft mouse to make it here to write this review, I became more and more furious. I have had this mouse for 6 weeks or so. It wasn't long after buying the mouse that my double click with the left button started to cut out. Sometimes lasting 5 mins other times days. I have spent a few hours on Microsoft Tech support trying to fix it. It finally started working on its own. Today however it stopped working in the middle of a Photoshop project. Can any of you imagine working on a Photoshop project with a left mouse button cutting out? The only thing that kept me from finding out what the interior of this mouse looks like by utilizing a tool I call "My living room wall" is through repeating the serenity prayer while ocaasionally slamming the mouse down on my desk. This thing isn't getting any better for me. If you buy this mouse after I have written this, better check for new drivers or find your receipt.

44 It worked great ...for 6 weeks (m)
I got this mouse as a Christmas gift. I installed it with no problem (despite the fact that the enclosed software didn't work on my PC) and it worked great. I loved the fact that it was optical because I no longer needed a mouse pad and there was no ball to get covered in cat fur. I also loved not having a cord under my desk to get tangled up in and I was considering getting a wireless keyboard to go with it. 6 weeks to the day after I installed it, it quit working. I tried rebooting, replacing the batteries, changing the channel, reconnecting with the receiver and the best I could get was jerky movements that were hard to control and the left button didn't work. I'm hoping I can return it for store credit and then try the Logitech.
45 Don't be hasty!
When I first opened this mouse and connected it to my laptop to go, I had so much trouble with erratic tracking that I decided I might be better off with the laptop's touchpad (I hate those touchpads). I boxed the Blue up and was ready to ship it back to Amazon[.com] when I decided to give it a go on my desktop machine (on which I currently use a wonderful MS 5-button wired optical mouse). I had even worse tracking issues than before and at times completely lost functionality. After a quick overview of the troubleshooting in the thin users guide, I decided to "reconnect" the mouse with the receiver. The tracking returned to its original erratic condition that I witnessed on my laptop. So back into the box it went.
Before taking the mouse to the post office the following, I decided to give it one last go on my laptop. I certainly wanted this to work or I would not have ordered it. The third time, indeed, was the charm. Tracking was smooth and controlled. I could rest the mouse on any surface (even uneven ones) and still it tracked fine. I was elated that I did give it a couple of chances. I am not completely certain why it was not as smooth out of the box, and I am not sure I could repeat the success I had getting this to function adequately. If you took the time to order this mouse, do yourself a favor and take the time to see if it will work for you.
46 This product needs some major work.
This mouse worked just fine when I installed it, although its tracking wasn???t quite as precise as my corded trackball mouse. After four weeks of flawless cord-free use, the left button would not register a click and then a couple days later the right button ... out also. I tried replacing batteries, uninstalling/reinstalling the software, switching USB/PS2 ports, changing frequencies, etc. and it did not help fix any problems.
It seems like Microsoft needs to take this product back to the testing labs and work out the bugs. I would suggest looking for a wireless mouse from a different company or wait to see if Microsoft comes out with a new updated product later in the year. My MS wireless mouse is heading back to the store where it came from.
47 No good... pointer doesn't move to exact location..
the shape of the mouse is ok, just like the normal optical MS mouse. The size is kind of small, not for big hands male.
the most critical problem I found is that the pointer of the mouse will move or "shift" very fast to lower left or right, depending on your motion.
Detail description:
While surfing the web, clicking the links, and reading the info, and move and click some more, you will notice the pointer will shift back quicly to the lower left or right corner of the screen. This motion is like the old ball mouse which have tons of dirty blocking the sensors. You have to lift up the mouse and move again.
This is annoying... I have a wirled optical MS mouse, it doesn't have this problem at all. I used a Wireless Logitech Mouse, it doesn't matter either... only happen if the battery is old or it doesn't synz with the "station". Usually, with a little reset on the mouse channel, everything should work proporly again.
However, this is not the case.
If you play WC3 and Starcraft, you may find this even more annoying.
Finally, if you have the same problem, you are not alone.
48 scientist
Its a good plug and play wireless mouse, but i think its not an engineering marvel. This microscoft product being cheaper than its competitors has manufacturing blemishes. The one I bought makes screeching noises when clicked.
The wireless makes no difference in traditional computer use. This one has a cumbursome 2 meter chord with the receiver and therefore its like carrying two mice instead of one with your notebook.
49 Pretty good
I have not experienced the problems everyone else has talked about. Using the USB connection on my Thinkpad, the mouse has been responsive and easy to use (even gaming). Unfortunately, the hub is a little large for mobile computing, and I consider the lack of a power switch a major drawback since it stays on regardless of whether I am using it or not. Battery life was only about 2 months averaging less than 1 hour/day of usage. Short of pulling the batteries out when I put it in my laptop bag, it is always on, not good! For a fixed desktop I would highly recommend this mouse.
50 really poor performance - don't buy it
Click switch is too deep and isn't adjustable in any way. On top of all, response to a click is slow. It seemed to work well at first, but after a week the click response took even a second sometimes. I'm returning the product. I SUGGEST YOU NOT TO BUY THIS.
51 decent mouse if you get one that isn't defective
It has the great convenience of being wireless with good range. The battery life appears to be decent, approaching a month of hour a day usage. It is definitely not a mouse useable for gaming. It doesn't have the response nor the precision required. I would have given it 3 stars had it not stopped working.
52 Don't waste your money
Looks good, but performance leaves a lot to be desired.
From the start, the tracking was poor, about on the level of a traditional mouse which needs its trackball cleaning -- jerky and eratic cursor movements.
Over time, the left button started to not register a click -- which seems really like a driver problem, because holding the button down does register as a "button down", but a click would not work all the time. Very frustrating.
Now it had just stopped working altogether, which is sort of good, because now I don't feel so bad about throwing it in the trash and doing what I should have done from the start - buy a Logitech wireless mouse...
53 Not jumpy for me now....
I have read some of the other reviews and a lot of people seem to think the cursor is jumpy. When I first used it I had the same problem. The cursor would sometimes fly across the screen or skip off in a different direction. I installed the IntelliPoint software and was reading the introduction. They said not to use it on a reflective surface. I thought this might be my problem and got out my old mouse pad that had a picture of vegetables on it. Since the top of the mouse pad was nylon it was definitely not reflective. After doing this, the performance improved greatly! The cursor almost never skips or jumps now.
If you are using this mouse and are having performance trouble, this is what I recommend-
1. Install the IntelliPoint software.
2. Use it through USB.
3. Keep the receiver closer than 6 feet.
4. Use it on a non-reflective surface, unlike a finished wood desk, plastic, etc.
54 Was OK, now useless
Was using it with my Powerbook and it was OK. Unlike the other comments, I didn't find it to be jumpy at all however the accelleration could have been faster. Now 60+ days in the left button won't work. Tried new batteries, tried different PC. No dice. I have the full blown Explorer Mouse for a year now with no problems and have never killed a button on any mouse before. Now out of warranty and having tossed the box I'm out of luck. A lesson learned for cheaping out!
55 Fantastic... If only the first two would have worked....
This mouse is really great, it offers a lot of benefits. Although the pointer may get a little jumpy at times, it is still a great buy that matches perfectly with a Natural Multimedia Keyboard (also by Microsoft). Because I had problems with my first two devices I'm not giving it 5 stars, they simply didn't work, but the third was the one... and I'm really happy with it. Recommended
56 Don't bother
Easy to install, but annoying to use. Seems to have a delay before the cursor moves, then kind of catches up to you.
57 you get what you pay for
This mouse is designed for both right and left handers. That means your left handed friend can use it without lots of pain, but that also means the other 99% of the time you use it with some pain. Its not worth it. If you are right handed go for the asymmetrically designed Intellimouse Explorer. Also, mine would skip, lag, and had other serious technical problems. It got returned...
58 The best of current mouse technology
I have long enjoyed the wired optical mouse from Microsoft. Recently I got my grandfather (who is missing a thumb on his right hand) the non-optical version of this mouse (this wasn't available yet) and it really made the difference for him! He was surfing the net more and shopping online just because he could easily pull it over and use it with his left hand. With this version being wireless AND optical, there is no reason not to spend the ~$30 to get the best in mouse technology. No jitters and easy to use ambidextrously. Just don't buy it from Radio Shack (one of the other reviewers gave the mouse a bad rating due to their buying experience) :) The receiver for the mouse is about the size of a mouse, but it works 3+ feet away without a direct line of sight -- so no worries!
59 Loving mine after a week!
After spending a week with mine, I can't imagine being without it. Unlike others, I haven't noticed the slightest jumpiness. Battery level is still listed as "good" (best you can get) after a week of fairly heavy use. Not sure how much of this has to do with the fact I'm using it with a Mac instead of a Windows machine, but bottom line is that I really, really like it. It's also more comfortable than the Apple-supplied optical "Pro" one-button mouse I had been using previously and the extra button and scrollwheel don't even need to be mentioned.
60 More clutter than a standard mouse!
I was very surprised upon opening the wireless mouse packaging to discover that the receiver (with very long cord) is about five times the size of my wireless network card. I cannot understand why a mouse would require such a large receiver. Furthermore, this totally defeats the purpose of buying the product if you want to reduce cords and clutter. This should be shown in the product information provided.
61 40 dollars down the drain, thanks RadioShak
I made the mistake of buying mine from RadioShaft because I was in a hurry. The mouse worked great at first. It did jump around for no apparent reason, mostly to the bottom left corner of the screen. Then it stopped working all together after about a week. Like so many others, I tried to fix it in vain. I tried to return it but according to RadioShark, when I threw out the packaging, i threw away my money back, although i had the reciept. Boo hoo. Never shop there, especially for this mouse.
62 Don`t buy it, piece on junk
This is the worst mouse I had. It is exxtremely jumpy. You can`t point anything in the screen, it feels like a Parkinson Mouse.
It is also very slow, I`ve tried with the speed and nothing helps.
This is not a good product so, don`t spend your money on it.
63 Worked great, Until it died
Installed and worked immeadiately . . . until it died 5 minutes later.
The Win-XP Device Manager shows it is installed and working properly, but it no longer controls the cursor. Un-installing and re-installing did not fix the problem, nor did changing channels. What could possibly be the problem with these things?
64 Good for office applications, lousy with games!
I think the title of my review says it all. I gave this mouse only 2 hours of use. It worked ok for using office applications like Excel or Word and fine on browsing the internet, but I was always left with the feeling it is slow and imprecise. When I tried it in Age of Mythology, it was downright too slow to work effectively. I could not click on my units as quickly as my regular Logitech Optical mouse, so I am returning MS' wireless blue mouse tomorrow. Note, I already upped the precision and mouse speed all the way to max, but it was still slow! I do not recommend this item as a gamer's mouse. Leave this to the internet surfers or business users!
65 worked at first...
I've experienced the same dilemma as the person from Ithica, NY.
This mouse worked great the first several weeks, but then the response became very jumpy. The batteries still seemed to be good because the LED was bright. I replaced with fresh batteries in spite of this, but it didn't help. I also tried to 'reconnect' the mouse many times and installed the intellipoint software - all in vain. Completely jumpy - you have very poor control over the pointer on the screen. Its too bad because the mouse has a cool looking design and it's nice that its wireless AND optical. Piece of junk now, though.
66 Nice
Have owned the Wireless Optical Mouse Blue for a few months. This mouse replaced my Microsoft Wireless Mouse because the ball was collecting every piece of dust from the desk...and the desk is pretty clean. The Mouse is small, comfortable, not too many buttons, and no wire or ball. It does cause the pointer to jump a bit when moving at a fast rate, but this never causes me not to be able to click on what I want. The battery life is the same as many other wireless mice I have used...even though the light stays on when the computer is shut down. I plugged it in, did not install any of the software, and it has been working fine ever since. Just have to keep within range of the reciever, but it still works where I cant read what is on the monitor. My rating may be a little generous because I always found the wire on the mouse annoying, and I may be willing to put up with a little barely noticeable imperfections. Overall, I like the mouse.
67 Not working scroll bar
I liked the mouse overall, but the scroll function didn't work. Very little "troubleshooting" in the software, Microsoft online support basically told me to reinstall drivers, etc. Even though I performed initial installation correctly, I redid it, with no improvement. I'll be returning it for a mouse that works correctly - I like the scroll wheel function in a mouse, and am not willing to trade it in, in case a mechanical problem, since it'd be at risk to not work again..
68 Sending mine back....
I have a Logitech wireless keyboard and Logitech optical mouse, both of which I love. But, I thought a wireless mouse would be great and I regretted not buying one initially. However, the MS Blue version is way too jumpy and nothing I adjusted really seemed to help. I'm back to my wired Logitech optical and sending this one in!
69 Works great for a bit....
The wireless optical mouse blue worked great initially--for a full two weeks. All the prior reviews on how great the mouse is seem to come from the first two week period. After two weeks, however, the mouse began to move erraticly and jumped on the screen. The quality seemed to degrade as the batteries lost power. After a month the batteries completely died. After replacing them, the mouse continued to respond poorly. I tried to change channels and the mouse would not connect to the receiver. The pointer stopped moving completely and now the mouse is unusable. Don't buy this mouse.
70 it's okay
I just got this today, it's works great. I read couple negative reviews, I don't know what's wrong with them, I don't have the same problem. I use ps/2 instead of USB, and it works perfectly. It's really accurate too.
The only thing is it's not THAT comfortable as I thought it would be.
71 My Microsoft kWireless Optical Mouse
I like my wireless optical mouse. I no longer have that annoying wire and mouse pad to contend with. I don't have to worry about cleaning the roller. My desktop is uncluttered.
Not only that, it is priced well. I comes with self-explanitory software, easy to install. Right and left mouse click can be edited if one wishes to do so. It's a good buy.
72 Great mouse
When I first recieved the Wireless Optical Mouse Blue, I had a little trouble getting used to it. It seemed to move around on my screen very fast. After installing the IntelliPoint software, I found a feature which let you adjust the movement according to how you use it. After setting this up I have had no problem. I've been using it for two weeks now and have had no problem with battery life.
The mouse fits very well in your hand. Scroll wheel is nice and easy to use and the optical tracking works very good. If you let it sit for a long time with out using it (hours), it will go into some sort of sleep mode. I find that moving the mouse does not wake it up but if you click one of the buttons or move the scroll, it picks right up again.
I was worried that the wireless feature of this mouse would not work very well but I have had no problem. The only instance where it started to skip was when my desk was piled with papers and things were covering up the reciever. Moved the papers away and it worked just fine. Only thing I wish was that it worked farther away than six feet, but that's still a pretty good distance.
My overall suggestion, if your looking for a replacement mouse or you just need a mouse, get this one. It will not disappoint you. Price is very low considering that it is wireless AND optical all in one. But, if you are looking for just a cheap, simple mouse, I would suggest getting a little 5-10 dollar off brand mouse as they will work. If your a gadget lover like me, this will deffinately entertain you.
73 Awesome
Bought this, I keep the receiver 6 feet away from the mouse up on a shelf. No problems whatsoever. BTW, this was the first mouse which would properly work with my KVM switch and with my other system, a Linux system. So now, only one mouse for both computers.
74 Do Not Buy If You Play Games!
This mouse looks pretty cool. But, it lags and skips around sometimes which can be very annoying when precision is needed (ie. playing games) Even on the desktop, the cursor will sometimes skip totally across the screen while you are moving the mouse. It's not really smooth either...if u just look at the cursor, it looks like ur dragging the mouse across sandpaper.
75 Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse Blue
This is the best product since the internet- NO track ball to clean- no cords to mess with- cleans my desk up- Plus it allows you to surf the web without a distance restriction- A++- Thanks Microsoft!
76 Great except more heavy than cord mouse
This mouse is great. I use 802.11b network, 2.4 Ghz cordless phone, and a GSM cellphone(I think also runs on 2.4 Ghz frequency). The mouse doesn't interfere with any of the products. I use to have a Logitech cord mouse which also works great; but it looks ugly (the newer Logitech looks good too, but I think M$ looks better)and has a cord. This mouse is much better looking and obviously doesn't have the cord tangle problem. However, cordless mouse is heavier than cord mouse. Without the two batteries, cordless mouse is only a little bit heavier than the cord mouse. So bottom line, if you got a trackball mouse, definately get an optical mouse IMMEDIATELY. If you absolutely hate the cord tangling together, you can not go wrong with this mouse.
77 A Microsoft mouse on an Apple computer?
Yes, the little blue mouse works perfectly on an iMac running OS X - just plug and play. No need for drivers or special software, just plug it in. I like this over the Apple mouse for several reasons: it's easier to drag and drop files because it's easier to keep the mouse "clicked", it has a scroll wheel, it has no cables, and despite with Apple die-hards might have you believe, the second button is sometimes very useful!
This mouse works well, and is sensibly priced. Keep your Apple one for when friends are ooh-ing and aah-ing at your new iMac, and keep this one for when you have work to do. Microsoft should seriously think of making a slightly more Apple-styled mouse!
78 Horribly Inaccurate
i had been wanting to go wireless for a while, but i also wanted something optical. when i saw the MS had come up with an inexpensive solution, i jumped at the chance to try it.
i'll cut to the chase. the mouse is extremely erratic. first, don't even think about using it with the ps/2 port--the mouse will hardly respond. it works far better on USB, but there's a significant lag that does not go over well if you need the mouse for anything requiring precision. i tried the mouse under a million different OS settings (winXP), changed the mousing surface, played with the receiver, swapped batteries---nothing improved the performance of the unit.
basically, if you're a gamer or an artist, stay away. this mouse will frustrate the heck out of you. shame on microsoft for not testing this thing a little more.
79 It's still a mouse...
I bought this mouse as a replacement for my MS Optical Mouse (which broke). The price seemed reasonable enough, and I'd never had a wireless mouse before so I decided to give this one a try. Software installation from the CD was quick and simple (Windows 2000 Pro) though I had to reboot 'for changes to take effect'. The mouse was recognized once plugged in and it's works just fine.
The lack of cord isn't as noticable as I had hoped it would be. I almost opted for the 'wired' Intellimouse with the side buttons instead (5 buttons in total) - I still think they would be handier than having a wireless mouse (thankfully they didn't make it shaped like a TV remote;)) The Intellimouse software on the CD (you can get it from MS's site as well) is great, I've been using it since I bought my last MS mouse about a year ago.
Battery life seems to be ok - I've had the mouse about a week now and it hasn't died on me yet.
Sometimes the cursor gets a little jumpy, overall it's just like every other mouse I've owned. I wouldn't recommend if you're big into gaming (because it's jumpy), but like I said in the title, it's still just a mouse, and it works fine.
80 Great mouse - but one major flaw
Picked up this mouse on a whim. I have always been a fan of wireless optical mice. Unfortunately, this mouse has one flaw. When I come into work in the morning the mouse is non-reponsive and I have to remove the batteries and replace them to get it to respond.
I think this is because I leave my computer on during the night and the mouse senses the lack of activity and goes to sleep. I think installing the intellipoint software may help resolve this.
Other than that problem - it's a great mouse. very comfortable and accurate.
81 Excellent Optical Mouse, but lacks features of prior version
I have used many different versions of Microsoft's wireless and wired optical mice. Their most recent addition to the pointing device family is excellent with the notable exception of the back and forward buttons generally found on higher end mice. The scroll wheel is a bit larger than previous versions, which is a nice plus. The wireless functionality works flawlessly through its USB connection and the mouse fits nicely in an average sized hand.
