Design
The i830 is no ordinary clamshell. Like other Nextel phones, it's built tough for construction and utilities industry users. The outer casing features a durable anodized metal covering that kicks the style up a few notches. The phone sports a large 130 x 130 TFT color display with 65,000 colors. Meanwhile, the outside cover features a supplementary monochrome display that can display time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The trademark Direct Connect and menu scrolling functions can be controlled from the side of the phone. An attached cover protects the unit's USB data, handsfree headset, and charging ports. The phone's control pad also features a five-way button that can control most of the phone's functions. The phone's software features one-touch shortcuts to phone features and easy, icon-driven menus.

Calling Features
The i830's built-in address book can store up to 600 contacts for quick and easy management of phone numbers and email addresses. The phone comes with built-in polyphonic ringtones plus a vibrating alert and you can assign unique ring tones to contacts for audible notification and caller identification during incoming calls. More polyphonic ringtones can be added via a Nextel Online add-on plan. Voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names. You can also speak numbers and control other phone features with the sound of your voice. Access the last 20 sent and received calls for quick call return or number storage via the recent calls list. A built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear, and the i830's GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911.

One of the key features of any Nextel phone is support for Nextel's Direct Connect walkie-talkie technology. The i830 fully supports the service, which allows for one-touch conversations with anyone else on a Nextel phone. It's like a having a CB radio with enough range to cover all of North America. The i830 also features a walkie-talkie private speaker button. This switches from the external speaker to the earpiece for private conversations or to minimize disruptions in quiet environments.

Getting on the Internet anywhere is easy with the i830, as well. Nextel's optional Nextel Online package allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. Nextel Online also features games, ringtones, realtime news and sports updates, virtual address books, and more-- all delivered to your Nextel phone.

The i830 ships with a datebook that lets you book meetings, plan events, and set alarms that will automatically turn on the phone if needed. You can store a phone number or Direct Connect ID and initiate a call from a datebook entry (datebook Does not sync with other software programs). There's also a voice recording application that can record phone conversations if you need to replay directions or meeting times. A time and date clock are included, as well.

Entertainment and Software
For those who want their i830 to match their tastes, the phone allows you to customize the idle screen with your choice of hundreds of available images. You can also download new wallpapers directly to your phone with any Nextel Online plan.

1 A Lot In A LIttle Package
Pros: This is a great phone. It can do everything you want, from the direct connect to calling, speakerphone or not. But is also has Java apps, web access, and text messaging.

The color screen is bright and easy to read. Unlike other Nextel phones (I had the i530), this one has a nice screen to see the number calling before you open the phone. You can answer it with the flip ,or still decide whether to take it or not.

I have the bronze, it is a nice color, and attractive little phone.

The DC is great, volume levels super, and it is nice Nextel is finally providing smaller phones.

Cons: Buttons are a little small for big guy like me, and while the battery life is good, does need to be charged about every night..not a problemo.

2 A great phone
Before I purchased this phone I read all the reviews. It was the perfect size for me, I loved that it was a flip phone and had the two-way feature, and THIN!!, but I was still very apprehensive about purchasing it because every review I read said the battery life stunk.

I'm glad I gave it a shot. I don't know if my experience with the phone is unique, but I've never had a problem with a low battery. It also charges SUPER fast. I generally put mine on the charger at night, but I've gone almost 3 days without charging it (low usage). I can get two days of use with one charge, and have regularly forgot to charge it at night, plug it in when I'm getting ready in the morning, and have a full day's use.

Other feature I like include the clear color screen, and sound clarity is fantastic. After having this for a few months, I hate using my roommates cell phone..there is just no comparison in sound.

There are a few things I dislike about the phone. I loved the polished steel look, but it scratches easily. I have dropped mine a number of times and it has gotten beat up. Also, it tends to be difficult to use while your driving (unless you use the voice dialing feature) because the option buttons on the screen (such as "store number" and "back") flip irregurly, and don't tend to be intuitional. I'm also not a fan of the speaker on the back of the phone. There is no alarm either. You have to use the "date book" in order to have an alarm and it's not easily set.

But in all I really do love this phone, it has been the best one I have owned in the past 10 years.

3 stinks i830
I have had this phone for 1year and it is the worst service I have ever had with a wireless company the battery stinks loses life before the day is up I never have service when I want it and drops calls when you are talking I would not advise getting this phone
4 Good Phone
I liked this phone it seems to be tough and stylish. But had ordered it off of Nextels site. They even gave me a code that saved me $50.00. Here it is for you all to share (CL897L) case sensitive. On the shopping cart page in the promo box. It is like an invoice thing. But I think it is a very good phone. You will enjoy the phone. Happy shopping.
5 Best Phone I've Ever Had
First of all this is my third cell phone. Previous to this I had a Nokia 3360 and a Motorola i90c. I will never buy another phone that isn't Motorola and they do it again with the i830.

PROS:
-Sharp, small, lightweight, sturdy design
-Real metal faceplates
-Big, bright, easy-to-read, color display
-Better service than i90c
-Useful applications and games (plus GPS)
-Comes with belt-clip/holster that the phone clips into backwards so you don't scratch the outside display
-Good speakerphone
-Improved power cord connector with dust cover
-Multiple numbers per name all with individual ringtones

CONS:
-Faceplates seem to show scratches (but very cheap replacements on Nextel.com)
-Earpiece a little too quiet
-Buttons can be a little stiff and hard to press
-Battery life could be a bit longer but not bad at all (charge lasts 2-3 days with normal use in overall good service area, 1-1.5 days in mostly no service areas)
-Ant. is hard to pull out.

Overall the good definately outweighs the bad. If you're going to go with Nextel get this phone! Oh yeah, silver looks better than bronze.
6 I want ot buy this phone, but i have one question.
Does this phone have cool ringtones that vibrate and do cool melodies? Polyphonic. Not monophonic. Thanks!!!
7 very sleek..
Better than it's picture and also very small. It fits in the palm of my hand. Great reception

8 Worth every penny
Traded the i730, AT LAST. I hated the size, it's about friggin time nextel offered a small color display phone. Motorola has made excellent tiny phones for years, and I finally get to combine it with Nextel service, which I wouldn't trade for anything. The browser is so useful I couldn't live without it, Biz Finder (I never call information), People Finder, movie times and flight arrivals, basically everything you could want out of a web browser for 10 bucks a month. And supposedly the GPS will actually work in this model (another 15 bucks a month), though I haven't tried it. And the "Address Book" is a convenience I become spoiled by. It keeps up to 5000 numbers in a searchable database that you create at Nextel.com and access through the browser (at a very reasonable speed). So far, the i830 is everything the 730 was just ALOT smaller. IT'S SO FRIGGIN TINY- FINALLY!!
9 One question
I am considering getting this phone but I have just one question: does it have external caller id?
10 Not worth it
I purchased this phone around late July of this year. Although the phone is very sleek and stylish, the battery life and reception on are the worse. I have had so many problems with this phone when placing calls and using Nextel's Direct Connect service that it is not even funny. In addition, the phone is always redialing, especially during off-peak hours. Although Nextel is most popular for their Direct Connect Service and Free Incoming price plans, they are also known for their poor reception. Truth be told, if you go Nextel, buy one of their older model cellphones such as the i95, i90, or i88. A large number of my friends have those models and they never had any trouble out of them. Before this phone, I had both the i530 and i730 in less than a year, and they were a mess as well.
11 TOP QUALITY PHONE AND SERVICE!!!
This phone does not have all the features that other known GSM carries have (AT&T, Tmo, Cingular) but this phone in particular is great in a sense it finally broke the mold that Nextel was known for. They finally created a small phone that actually work very well. It is about the size of the motorola V60 (actually kinda smaller but heavier) and is very VERY durable.

I have been using this phone for at least 3 days so far and i have dropped it on one occasion and it lasted through the shock. This phone has what Nextel people needed which was size and DC.

I highly reccomend this phone if you want just a great quality voice call, BUT if youre looking for features like cameras or video recording please look to the GSM providers. On a side note, Nextel is coming out with their I860 in a few months so please be on the lookout for this Camera phone.

Here are the PROS and CONS:

Pros:
Small size
Durable
Loud Speakerphone
Call reception is great

Cons:
No camera
No BT
bit heavy

If you can look past its simple design you might be in for a treat knowning that it has all the things that we would expect from a Nextel phone.
12 The best for Nextel users
I rate this phone the best for a Nextel user due to it's slim size. I've had mine about a month and am really enjoying not having to strap a phone the size of a brick to my hip.

This phone is essentially a 730 slimmed down. It seems the space savings was achieved with a slimmer battery - because mine does need recharging about once per day.

I've used the 1000,85,95,73 and now this phone. I prefer a slimmer design over battery life. If you don't mind returning to a charger every so often you'll probably like it. If you are away from a power source and on the phone for a while you will need a spare battery or two. UPDATE 3-29-05: Still enjoy using this phone. The small size and solid construction has worked very well for me. If you're thinking Nextel and want a compact phone I'd definitely look at this model.
13 The Tiny i730
I recently purchsed this phone. At first, I was hesitant because I thought it was entirely too expensive. Basically, it is an i730 in a smaller package, but I have noticed this phone has just slightly better reception. What I despise most about this phone is its battery life. I place the thing on the charger every night before i got to sleep. The size is perfect because it does not feel like I am carrying a gun on my belt holster. Overall, I believe it is a good phone, but I do not recommend paying some outrageous price to have one.
14 Best East Coast - Baja Mexico long distance mobile solution
Received the phone (Bronze) last weekend. Very satisfied with i830's performance and with Nextel's costumer service. Phone is unobtrusive and light, yet solid and functional. Coverage around the Hartford, CT area is excellent: no drop calls yet. Direct Connect feature is outstanding: can talk indefinitely with friends and family in Northern Baja California, Mexico (no more costly long distance bills). Overall, a complete solution to mobile communication in a striking, exceedingly elegant package.
15 AWFUL
As a nextel customer for a year I can assure you that I've NEVER had a good experience dealing with them. Their service area is probably the worst I've had (verizon and cingular are both much better). Their customer service is about as useful as a punch in the face and their calling plans are extremely overpriced. Due yourself a favor and go with another carrier, it's a shame because motorola makes a good phone however using nextel as your carrier you might as well be using tin cans with string.
16 Best Nextel Phone To Date
Have had the phone for over a week now. Great call quality, great reception (Dallas area), address book is second to none, LOUD ring tone, great portability. I've always stayed away from Nextel due to the bulky size of their phones. No more.

My last phone was a Motorola V60 from Verizon. The phone is similar in size to the V60, although slightly slimmer. The only negative comment about the phone is that the battery life is very short. If you are a power user, you should always have a charger nearby or at least have a second battery around. For most users, the battery should last a couple days though. With my V60 I was only charging the battery about twice a week. With this Nextel I need to charge it every 1-2 days. The only thing missing on the phone that I wish it had is Bluetooth. Other than that, the phone is perfect for me.

I switched from Verizon after being happy with Verizon for the past 3 years because I recently moved to Texas and I found the Verizon phone was going into the Extended Area Network at and around my work place. Reception was also spotty in the work area although everyplace else was great. I was able to get the phone at a heavily discounted price from a Nextel store (cheaper than what Amazon was selling it for even after rebate and NO I do not have ANY affiliation with Nextel other than being a customer). Also got 1000 anytime minutes for $55, unlimited long distance, unlimited direct connect. With Verizon I was getting 400 anytime minutes for $40. Overall, VERY happy I made the switch.

17 Nice Phone
It is a great phone with GPS specially.
You can subscribe TeleNav service from Nextel to do real time navigation. You never get lost if you have this service.
I tried, it is great!
18 Great phone. Finally a Nextel that fits in your pocket.
This is the nextel i was waiting for. Its slim, works great and the best Nextel I've ever owned.

Amazing thing is that the screen size is the same as i730 but of course the phone is 30%-40% smaller.

The TeleNav feature is great if you're a business traveller. it TELLS you exactly how far your turn is and when to turn. I'd say its worth the extra $10 a month.

Upgrade or buy this phone. You'll love it!

19 Great size + built-in TeleNav GPS system
This is the best phone nextel has put out (minus the speaker phone). Its got everything you'd want.

small size
built in TeleNav GPS that works like those expensive GPS systems
light weight
looks cool

i just wish the speaker was a bit better.

I highly reommend it
