The NEC LCD1765 17-inch TFT active matrix LCD monitor combines strong performance features with a slim, attractive design. A 0.264 mm dot pitch, 400:1 contrast ratio, 225 nits of brightness, and a recommended screen resolution of 1,280 x 1,024 result in crisp and clear images in nearly any setting. The wide 160-degree horizontal viewing (140 degrees vertical) and adjustable tilt make viewing comfortable from nearly any angle. The unit's light weight and slim profile also make it easy to position.
The NEC LCD1765 includes a 15-pin miniD-sub cable for analog input, and offers VESA compliant power management with a low wattage power saving mode equivalent in output to power off. It is backed by a one-year warranty on parts, labor, and backlight.

1 my beautiful 17 inch NEC LCD
I got my MultiSync LCD-1765 about half a year ago and it is so nice. It sits on my desk, freeing up tonnes of room for my keyboard which is always nice. It is built very sturdy, which in my opinion is a good thing. It looks bigger than it really is, says most people. I play quake3 Rocket Arena on it all the time and its quite fine. It turns off and on in less than a second, which is faster than some CRTs I know. It is one of the best LCDs I have come across so far. NEC is a good brand to trust. It matches my grey logitech MX700 wireless mouse. I gave it 5 stars because I have found absolutely no fault with it.
My next plan is to get some kinda adapter to hook this up to a playstation 2 video output, tv cable, or dvd player. I dunno if having a DVI input would have made this LCD any easier to hook up but ah what the heck. I will get a Vesa wallmount for it also and mount on my wall so I can watch movies from my bed. Overall, it has done a good job so far. It still gets 5 stars for that.
The only thing that would have made this an amazing deal would be a lower price tag. Don't get me wrong this is fair value for money. But I wish I could have spent 300 on it instead of 500.
Any questions about my LCD? email is = sonicvybe@yahoo
2 Determine a monitors Sharpness
Most stores have WinXP as the OS. To determine the sharpness when displaying type faces - find out where the keyboard and mouse are located. You may have to ask a clerk to get you out of the screen saver to the "desktop" window of WinXP. Press Start/Run.. and type in wordpad and press enter. Then mouse over to the font size and get it to Arial size 12. Then type rounded capital letters like O Q P R G B D C. If I saw the O as a 8 sided stop sign -- I would reject that monitor. BUT there is a way to get the display to be in ClearType. Hit Help to learn how. Then after ClearType is active the capital O etc will display as rounded letters.
On this NEC 1765 monitor I saw it as rounded letters - so I wanted to buy this one. But I hate the plastic front covering because of the reflected glare from background light. Thats why I rated this with only 2 stars. Dont get me wrong - this is a very good monitor NEC usually is.
I just bought a 19" monitor lizzard by Sharp which has a contrast of 700:1 and 3 analog inputs which can be switched from a button on the front + it has a DVI input making it ready for the future. The screen display has a button to change the display instantly from a colorful gaming mode to a more subdued modes. I havent opened the box yet but folks here on Amazon gave it 5 stars.
3 Beats the competition
I looked long and hard at Sony, Samsung and Envision monitors before I bought this, and I have been very satisfied with my purchase. It is crystal clear with text, graphics and movies. Set it up with decent speakers and it's great for DVDs.
4 My two cents...
Like other reviews posted, when you step into the monitors section in CompUSA this monitor will catch your eye. Not because of its style (at least not for me), but for its incredible picture quality. It is flawless for viewing DVDs and playing video games - enough said. One concern I had before I bought it was the glare. In the stores there is a glare. However, this has not been a problem for me. The only time I can see a glare or reflection is when the screen in completely black - which is never the case when I'm using it. I have no complaints, but will echo that fact that the base is stiff. But this is of no real concern unless you plan on moving or tilting your monitor frequently.
5 Is It High Quality CRT??!!
The colors are so realistic and bright that I can't help think that it's a CRT. The difference is that with these I can fit two in the same space it takes to have one CRT. Whether turned on or off it always looks like a beautiful picture frame. But when playing a movie or game is when it really shines. I dare you to compare side by side with more expensive LCDs and see for yourself. You will be amazed.
6 Clearly the Best "Looking" LCD for the Money !
Let me first say that I researched 17" LCD monitors for over a month before settling on the NEC 1765. After reading dozens of reviews, online and off, I narrowed down my choices to the following: Samsung 173p, Sony SDM-HX73, and the NEC 1765. The Samsung 173p (note that there's a huge difference in picture quality between the 173p and 173s models) admittedly has a SLIGHTLY better (brigher) picture aided by its 700:1 contrast, but it also cost $200 dollars more. I'm happy to report that I was able to buy the NEC 1765 for $450 with a $50 rebate and a $50 sale at Circuit City. The Samsung also has a slower response time of 25 ms (versus 16ms for the NEC) which is not favorable for playing games or watching action movies (both things which my hubby enjoys using the computor for). Then there is the SONY SDM-HX73. It has a high contrast (500:1), a FAST response time of 16ms, as well as decent integretated speakers. Plus, a unigue design. But when I went to my local Fry's and saw the 3 monitors side by side, the images on the NEC LCD simply looked BETTER, BRIGHTER, and CRISPER. Also, the SLEEK and modern NEC made the SONY look bulky. And even though having integrated speakers save space, they pale in comparison to a good set of exterior speakers. Finally, the NEC is the only one that incorporates a HARD SCREEN protector which allows me not to stress out if someone touches the screen (like my 3 year old). The only criticism I have read about the NEC is the glare issure but I simply adjust the angle of the screen (it's only bad if the light source is directly behind it). Personally, the only complaint that I have is the 1 year warranty. I have to say though that having inspected it, it's built like a tank - there's nothing FLIMSY about it. Plus, it arrived with ZERO DEAD PIXELS. I replaced my 19" CRT monitor and as pleased as punch - I should have made the switch sooner. With my new LCD monitor, and my wireless Microsoft keyboard and mouse, my "aging" computer got a MAJOR styling update!
7 I'll never use a CRT again after buying this LCD monitor
This was not my first choice in computer monitors. I originally bought a Viewsonic CRT monitor because I wanted true colors for my photography. LCD's have always scared me off, as people say they have unreliable color. After two defective CRT monitors, I thought it was time to embrace the new technology.
I did a side-by-side comparison of all the popular LCD monitors. Two brands really stand out: Sony and NEC. I chose this NEC because of bright backlighting, engineered specifically for photo editing. And, it really is bright. Unlike a CRT, it doesn't buzz, flicker, or wobble. It's rock steady. The colors are vibrant and make photographs look three dimensional.
True to the disadvantages of CRT's, viewing from angle makes the colors look a little warm. Viewing from an elevated angle makes part of the screen look a little darker. As the saying goes, "Just don't do that." If you tweak your colors and keep your monitor pointed straight-on, this beauty will out-perform any CRT I've used. The stand is fully adjustable and, unlike a CRT, you don't need a fork lift to adjust the viewing angle.
The stand was a bit stiff and it took me a little courage to snap it into place. Odd for a high performance monitor, this one is analog rather than digital. My video card can drive both. Again, I was not disappointed. Although there are the usual tweaks, size adjustments, offset adjustments, etc - there is button on the side which does all the tweaks for you. This is wonderful. What once took me fifteen minutes for each video mode now take a few seconds.. click / done. Wow.
The monitor is so compact and light, that I I did have one minor difficulty when I picked it up at the store. They couldn't find it! I guess they weren't expecting this compact 13lb box with its own carrying handle. I was impressed again. Not a dead pixel to be found, rock solid, bright BRIGHT colors, razor sharp images and text, and zero flicker at 60hz. I'll never go back to CRT's again.
8 I LOVE IT!
This is so far my favorite LCD 17" monitor I have used/seen and being that I setup computer systems for doctor's offices for living I've seen a lot.
My parents got this model for their home computer and everytime I use it I just absolutely love it. It is SUCH a sharp and clear and high contrast image and it seems like the refresh time or whatever is really good too. I've played counter strike on it a LITTLE bit, but what I did experience was great. I know LCDs aren't supposed to be for gaming but I think that is changing and pretty soon LCDs will be very acceptable for gaming as this one already appears to be. Another feature of this monitor I really like is the hard plastic cover. A lot of people are used to being able to touch their CRT screen because it is hard glass, but as you might know touching an LCD can cause ripples and damage if touched too hard. The hard plastic cover is GREAT! It makes the monitor very easy to clean and protects the monitor AND it's hardly noticeable as far as image quality goes. It does not diminish image quality as far as I can tell. I LOVE THIS MONITOR!
9 Seeing is believing
As I stood at the counter of an automotive service shop, I was totally "blown away" by this beautiful lcd display perched in front of me......It appeared to be from the future or at least somewhere far from Oklahoma City....I couldn't take my eyes off of this monitor;......classy and sturdy looking... I didn't know about resolution, pixels, contrast, and all that stuff; however, I knew this: "It was like looking into clear liquid"....I could see every little detail of the order from any angle that I stood.(I never dreamed an invoice could be attractive-looking) ..This was the 15" model #lcd1565 on the counter but looked so much bigger...In comparison to many lcd's , it was a little pricy for a monitor with only a one year warranty, but I was totally sold!..I bought the lcd 1765 17" and it looks fantastic!!!..Watching dvd's is totally incredible...My grandson put on a dvd,"Finding Nemo", and I'll swear it seemed to put us right in the water..It looks like we'll have to get on for the office now......I produce tv commercials and I'm sure that it wouldn't hurt my business if everyone could see the T.V spots on this monitor..hmmm?
Obviously, I would recommend this classy #...you'll have to see it to believe it.
10 I cannot give enough praise for this monitor
I have been using this monitor for aobut three months now. The picture is exceptionally bright, even, colorful, and balanced. I was concerned about the glare off the acrylic screen protector, but it turns out it is easier to avoid glare than the "naked" models (they simply diffuse the glare). It is extremely easy to clean, I wonder why other manufacturers won't do this. The quality control is very good: absolutely no defects. The monitor has a futuristic "Star-Trek control panel" looks to it, but it it is done in such a tasteful manner that it does not get old at all. Movies are great on this monitor, but it is absolutely perfect for text and gives me no eyestrain for those 8-hour coding/writing/analysis sessions. I have not seen a better monitor, especially at this price. Highly recommended.
11 Excellent
When I go to the computer store to look at LCD monitors, they all seem to fall into one of two categories - those that look good and those that look great. This one is definitely one of the latter. I chose it mainly because of the acrylic covering that protects the screen. In our house, it is impossible to prevent small fingers from touching the screen. I was also waiting for a monitor that could display video and action games without too much ghosting. This NEC unit did not disappoint. Don't be put off by the location of the hard-to see control buttons (on the side of the bezel). A little fooling around orients you to NEC's scheme, and once it's set, you can forget it.
Criticisms:
1. The stand folds for travel, but is really, really stiff. You can't raise the unit more than a couple of inches off the desk.
2. No digital interface. Only of concern because I intend to keep this monitor for many years, and who knows for how long new video cards will continue to support analog? It doesn't matter for now - the picture is rock-solid.
3. The warranty is only for a year. I expect one-year warranties from second tier vendors, but not from NEC. This thing is built like a tank.
4. I am getting a bit tired of silver and black color schemes, especially on bezels. Sony used to make a glossy black unit with an acrylic screen. A real stunner.
Conclusion: For the price, you can't beat this value.
12 Best image for a 17" monitor
Great contrast, great response time, super sharp image, nice style. As with all LCD monitors, you need to use the 'native' resolution for best image quality. The only thing I wish is that they'd come out with an 18 and 19" version of the same monitor (they've got 'em in Japan!).
13 Great monitor for the money!!!
I'm an apple macintosh user, and stand by apple products all the way. I very seriously considered getting an Apple 17" studio display, but the cost is a little out of my league. After careful research on the net and checking it out in store, I decided on this NEC LCD1765. The style is retro and slick (one of my favorite stylistic devices is the blocky gameboy style gradient fade on the frame around the actual display), but more importantly the display quality is SUPERB! this looks as good to me as the apple LCDs (which i use every day at work)... Negative points: Funky button layout... may require a few "auto adjusts" to properly lock a crystal clear picture (but once this is done it doenst need to be done again unless you change the settings). Lack of DVI input. Once the picture is clear tho it is CRYSTAL clear, even with the lack of DVI. I can't really tell the difference. Good deal for the money! Sony style, apple quality, NEC logo on the front!
14 Sweet Machine
This flat-panel monitor looks very good for its price range. I bought it mostly because it has one of the lowest response times (around 16ms, or 60Hz) that I saw for monitors under $600. That speed makes it great for movies and it handles video games (I tried it on Halo and GTA: Vice City) beautifully. Like all flat-screens, it is a bit fragile and from what I've read and heard, it's fairly common for pixels to burn out. So I bought a bought an extended 3-year warranty from the retailer where I got it, and I'd recommend doing the same if you are going to make the investment. It doesn't have an anti-glare filter on it, but I don't miss it. This monitor is ultra-stylish and a very sweet machine. I highly recommend it.
15 Superb Monitor
This is the best LCD monitor I have seen at this price. It is bright, crisp, and the colors are very accurate after a little calibration. The contrast is also very good. The monitor is very clean looking and extremely futuristic looking. The response time is excellent and I had no problems with ghosting on either movies or games. The images seem to pop off the screen with splendid realisim. The only drawbacks I see are the 1 year warranty, and it would be nice if the base swiveled. If you can live with these two minor drawbacks go for it because you simply won't find a better display under $600.00.
16 lemon
This monitor developed a burn-through line within 3 days and had to be returned. Perhaps I just got a one-off bad one, but I didn't bother to replace it with another of this same model. Also, if you try to set the screen area at anything less than 1280x1024 (as you have to to see any smallish print), an annoying message comes up every five minutes right smack in the middle of the screen telling you that your resolution is less than optimal. I couldn't figure out how to get this message to close -- perhaps it's somewhere in the manual -- but who has time to bother?
17 Best of the Best
This monitor is the best LCD I have ever used. The quality of the display is amazing and must be seen to be believed.
18 "Picture-Perfect" Monitor
This monitor is the greatest monitor I have ever seen. From the extremely fine display to the way it blends seemlessly with the rest of the decor. The best part is when there is only a picture on the screen, it looks so much like a picture in a frame that I want to hang it on the wall. A true 5-Star monitor!
19 Nec LCD 1765
This Monitor is GREAT!!! I have had it a month now, we also have a flat panel monitor. When we bought the flat planel we thought the the picture quailty was superb, however the picture quailty on the NEC is fantastic. If you watch movies or play lots of games you really need this monitor.
