1 Even An Idiot Like Me Can Install It With No Problems
I'm writing this review not because I'm an expert with routers or networking, but because I was able to install this little jewel all by myself without any help from anybody. Believe me, that's a recommendation! I did use the installation CD-ROM and it took me through a completely automated installation procedure (I'm using XP - I don't know how it works with other versions of Windows) and it was up and running within ten minutes max from opening the box to surfing the Net. As far as I can see it is absolutely transparent, no speed changes, no glitches.
If this computer idiot can be satisfied, I figure anyone can be.
2 ok router for the average user
When i first bought this router i loved it. the price was great the size was great and it seemed to do its job until i realized that my 3 meg cable connection was cut in half everytime i connected through the router. I bought the router to be able to hook my xbox up to the internet at the same time as my computer but soon realized also that there NO VOICE in online games!.. so if you are wanting this router for that purpose dont buy it! If you want something to just share your internet connection to other pcs with and dont care that your connection speed is going to be cut in half then by all means buy it!
3 Worked decent for a while, but then up and died
I purchased this router in August of '03. It seemed to work great, although I did have a "freezing" issue whenever I would attempt to access files on a secondary computer on the network. Primary computer seemed to lock WinXP up for about 25 seconds each time. It only did it if I hadn't accessed the secondary's HDD for several minutes though. So I figured it must be some sort of communication issue between XP on primary box and 98SE on secondary box. But after reading about all these horrible experiences so many people have had with this thing, I now realize it was probably the router. I shall find out soon enough.
Yes, "Seemed" is in the past tense here, as this thing up and failed on me tonight - right out of the blue. As others have reported, "Diag" light stays on all the time and won't reset no matter how many times you push and hold the reset button. It's just dead. I'm pissed, because it only had a 1 year warranty. It did work for a little over a year, but come on - now I'm sitting here on a Friday night totally unable to use my network and unable to contact Linksys support until Monday. If I had known it was going to die right after the warranty was up, I never would have "saved money" buying this cheapest of routers at Fry's Electronics. Anything that dies right after it's 1 year limited warranty is up, in my opinion, is a total scam. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS(...)!!!
4 Just didn't work
May have been defective. 1) It would only recognize one of three PC's on the network, regardless of which port they were plugged into. (Apparently it couldn't handle CAT5 cable lengths greater than 6 feet.) 2) The HTML-based interface was buggy, I really wasn't expecting to see script errors from firmware. 3) It runs awfully hot. I returned it the next day, and exchanged it for a "real" LinkSys, which so far is working out great.
5 DEAD at age 22 days
I had originally written a review praising this router. It worked right out of the box, easy set-up. But, 22 days after purchase, it started shutting itself off. Would run fine--for approx. 3 minutes, then "lights out" literally. Would have to unplug its powerblock, wait a minute or so, then replug. Still, just the 3 minutes and off again. Took it back to CompUSA (which was "nice" enough to let me exchange it past their 14-day limit, as long as I paid another $4.99 for their 1-year "walk-in replacement" warranty), swapped it out for another of the exact same model. That 2nd one went belly-up the next day; same deal, but the off time varied from the earlier one's 3 minutes. Tried plugging it into another outlet (not my power strip, thinking it might possibly be that); no change. Returned it to CompUSA the next day, exchanged it for their store brand router. That's only been 3 days, but so far, it's still running. We'll see.
For me, NO MORE LINKSYS *ANYTHING*.
6 Network Everywhere 4-Port Cable/DSL Router
Have had difficulty with getting the unit to work. Installed software with no positive result.
7 Buggy Port Forwarding
For basic functionality (sharing a broadband connection, file and printer sharing, etc), this is a solid little router with few, if any, reliability problems. I've had it running for almost six months, sharing a RoadRunner cable modem between a Win2k PC and a RH Linux PC, and I don't recall it dropping a connection or needing a reset.
The 'fun' starts, however, if you try to use some of the advanced functionality, like port-forwarding. I've tried everything under the sun to forward port 80 to my Linux PC (to run a webserver) but the router wil do so for a few hours (or minutes, or not at all!) then switch to forwarding it to my Win2k PC. As another reviewer here noted, this is a bug acknowledged by their tech support with no plans for a fix (I'm running the latest firmware). As far as I can tell, other features like forwarding non-standard ports (for P2P or voice chat) and the DMZ feature work fine.
If you need/like to tweak advanced features, then stay away from this router. But if you have no plans other than plain-vanilla internet, file and printer sharing, then this is not a bad purchase for the price.
8 Worked BAD with My Earthlink DSL
Wow! I suffered with this thing for 3 days before I gave up and returned it, I bought a Gigafast EE-400R Router instead and most of my problems dissapeared.
Bad things about this "Network Everywhere" router:
1. Runs Hot
2. Internet is very slow, 2wice as slow as without this router!!
3. Tech support hours are limited and are a long distance #
4. Didnt work with Secure sites like Hotmail (Ok neither did Gigafast router at first because of Earthlink's MTU settings but the very able tech support helped me there.)
If you are having difficulty with secure sites Like hotmail or Yahoo mail
try this :
4. change the MTU1 PPPoE client value from 1500 to "1000", and click SAVE
...
9 Great Router
I have had this router for about 6 months and have no trouble with it. I installed it and haven't had to mess with it since. I did have a little trouble installing it, but I called the Linksys support and we got it figured out. The router is a good product and I found the Linksys support was pretty good. Would recomend
10 Great!
Easy to setup, strictly plug and play (XP & ME). So far no problems at all, it has been 2 months. Sure can't argue with the price...I guess thats why it's kind of lightweight, but hey...it works really good!
11 Good Value Router
The router itself is very good... But it also runs at a high temperature and is extremely hot to the touch... And the rebate... well, you won't get it, because I tried but the company said that I didn't buy it within the rebate promotional period... I sent them a copy of the receipt and rebate form again, but I still was denied the money... I guess the rebate people are illiterate.
12 Low-end router with limited capabilites
Yes this router is cheap, but it does not function well. The main reason is that it does not support port-forwarding a key element of a router. I called tech support because port-forwarding did not seem to be working on the NR041, and they told me there was a bug that caused this malfunction. To make matters worse, there is no ETA on the patch for this major problem as Network Everywhere is concerned with their wireless products at this point. I sincerely urge people to skip this router and look for a better one.
13 Not Recommended for Playstation2 Network Adaptor
I bought this for my PS2 Network Adaptor and it does work with Playstation 2 but when I tried to play SOCOM online you can't hear anyone speak. I called up the help desk and they told me that this router doesn't support voice over it and they are looking into fixing the problem but as of now I wasn't able to do anything about it. I also had a problem with configuring ports on my computer so when I asked the help desk and they gave me the runaround with no help at all. Very poor customer service by this company. Also, it's not a 800 number so I had to call across the country for poor customer service and it's not 24 hour service.
14 Great Bang For Its Little Buck
This is a terrific broadband router that delivers what it promises: a fast solution to share an internet connection, printer, etc. in one's home. I bought it because it was the least expensive device of its kind that supported the cumbersome PPPoE platform. A mere twenty minutes after having received the router in the mail, I was happily surfing the internet in the comfort of my own room. The setup is that easy. All one has to do is follow the enclosed installation CD to the letter (with special attention paid to the instruction booklet that's also included in the package) and you'll be up and running in no time too. The router itself is rather small and heats up fairly quickly -- a minor inconvenience I should think. Needed in addition to the router is one RJ-45 cable to connect the router to one's modem. The cable one used to use to connect one's host computer to the modem can now act as a link to the router's first port. This is the path I chose and as such it required that I purchase only one more RJ-45 cable to connect my second computer to the router. Conclusion: great, inexpensive product from a reputable company. Highly recommended.
15 Wow!
I was very impressed with this router...it is small, cheap, and very easy to set-up and use. When I first got it I opened the box, plugged it in and within 10 minutes I had 2 computers and an XBOX all in the same network. I highly reccomend this product.
16 Payback in 3+ months
My situation is that I was paying [$] a month for an Earthlink DSL connection for my desktop, then another [$] a month to connect via dialup on my laptop (Earthlink gives you 20 'free' dial hours in their DSL package, then $1 for each hour after 20 hours of use, capped at [$]). Since I work back-and-forth on the two computers all day, I was hitting that [$]cap consistently.
With that background, I purchased the Linksys Network Anywhere 4-port device. This unit does not come with any Ethernet cables. You need a total of three cables to connect two PCs. Most folks like me have one in place. So, factor the cost of two additional cables into your purchase price.
My only complaint is about the setup documentation - you're advised in a couple of places that unless you really know what you're doing, it's best to just allow the set-up configuration wizard to handle everything. Well, I ran through the wizard-controlled series of steps twice. At the each of each sequence, the program concluded "Link successful." A test revealed otherwise.
So I pulled up the detailed configuration manual (included on the CD in PDF format), and buried down in Chapter 6 ('Configuring the Router') there's this buried text about configuring a 'PPPoE connection.' The wizard assumes Dynamic IP, but the config guide reveals that you want to set up PPPoE 'whenever you require a user ID and password to connect to the Internet.'
Well, duh, that's like 85% of us (anyone using Earthlink or MSN, for example). So what's this text doing buried so deep in the manual? Anyway, you use a browser-based admin interface to configure the router with the User ID and password, then you're good to go.
Once you set up that first computer, it's easy from that point. Because the steps I described above configure the router appropriately, the second PC simply worked as soon as I connected the Ethernet cable.
My total cost, including two 3-ft. cables and tax, was [$]. That means I'll get a payback in a little less than four months. By any measure, that's a heck of a good deal.
17 Truly easy setup and works great with Winxp/Win98
5 minute setup(if that long).
I have WindowsXP n Windows98 on other computer, works great.
You really can't make a mistake.
Didn't need to use included CD.
Just use QUICK INSTALLION data included in box with router.
I run the router all day and it is Warm not Hot.
I would advise like others not to place on a rug though.
Actually never place any electrical or flamable items directly
on a rug(carpet).
18 great router, just don't upgrade the firmware
when I first got the router, it worked fine. But I, like a moron, decided to upgrade the firmware, believing I should have everything up to date regardless of how well it works at first. Then things started to slow down. I could still download at the same rate as before, but there was a 3 second lag everytime I clicked on a web page link (i use verizon dsl). so i tried to downgrade the firmware, which could not be done per the linksys tech support people, so i sent it back for a new one. this time, i didnt' upgrade the firmware, and everything is back to normal, no lag.
the thing gets warm, not too hot. i was scared when i read the reviews that it would melt my desk but thats not the case.
all in all i like the router. it does what i need it to do and it was cheap.
19 great router
for the price, it's awesome. just needed a basic router to run a network and it works fine. set up in less than 5 minutes. definitely recommend it.
20 Buy something else.
The NR041 is manufactured by [a]section of Linksys. Although it does all it is advertised to do, it also will slow down your broadband connection by a factor of 4-10. I thought the first one I had was defective, so I returned it for another. Same results. With a direct cable connection, I was getting well over 1.5 Megabytes per second. With the router, the connection was cut down to 200 KBS. One computer I used runs W98 SE, the other XP home. Same result on both computers. When I finally bought a "real" Linksys (and paid more of course), the connection suppression went away.
21 Can't ask for more in a router.
I've used the flagship Linksys 4-port router for the past year but starting last month...it started to have problems. I couldn't connect more than 3 devices to it, and it kept on losing connection with my cable modem.
So I then bought a D-Link router...but had to return it because it kept on resetting itself (probably due to overheating). Then I got his Network Everywhere (Linksys Junior) and I'm impressed.
It has nearly all the features the more expensive blue Linksys routers have, but is more compact and is fitted inside an attractive metal casing. And it works great...all I did was plug-n-play.
I placed a piece of plastic underneath the router so it won't touch the carpet directly...because the carpet will cause the router to get really hot. So place the router on top of something...don't set it directly on the carpet.
22 smooth ride, kinda...
relatively easy to set up, even using manual installation. it was so simple in fact, that i gave myself more grief than necessary by trying to set additional, useless settings.
the "over heating problem", if any, is very minimal, and understandable for what that little METAL box is doing. router configuration is easily accessable, and allows for more advanced settings for "pro" users.
the only thing i found slightly aggrevating was the fact that on default, it applies a number of filters that caused some initial problems for me such as my FTP and IRC connections. either way, just a minimal nuisance that can be solved with the click of the mouse (actually, a few clicks...)
A- in my opinion :)
23 Great Product - Even Better Price
This is simply the perfect product for a home or small office that needs to share a broadband connections. To start out with, its very small and in durable metal casing. More importantly, it does exactly what it needs to do and it does it well. In my case, all I had to do was plug it into my cable modem and into my computers. I didn't have to do any configuration, but even if I did, it would have been a snap. The price is also great. ...
24 Its ok, good value
it sometimes looses the internet connection, and its a hassle to set up a working ftp/server. besides that i think its a good solution for a home network, or a small bussiness network. its a good value though, buy it and try it!
25 Wow! This is a great product! And it's so small!
...This is great!
I opened the box. This thing is really small! It is smaller
than my hand. I was expecting something twice as big. I'm
delighted that something so small can do the job.
I quickly looked thru the Quick Installation guide. Understood
that I need to power down everything first. So I did that,
connected it to my DSL gateway, my two PCs, one running
Windows 98SE, and the other running Windows XP. And power
them up one at a time. And they just worked! I didn't need
to use the installation CD that comes with it. This is
really plug-and-play! Then I tried running VPN Client to connect
to my office machine 30 miles away. Worked perfectly again.
One of my connection (the XP) even get the 100Mbps LED to light
up. It has a newer [$] IBM 10/100Mb 32-bit Ethernet NIC.
I understand from earlier reviews that it will be hot. I'll be
monitoring that. So far it has been okay. Maybe it will get
hotter when I connect my other two machines to it. I'm running
out of Ethernet cable to connect them right now.
All in all, I think this is a great and compact product.
Highly recommend it. Good luck!
26 Does work fine with Motorola Surfboard Modem and XP
This router works great! Contrary to other review here, I had no trouble networking multiple PC's to share my Moto surfboard modem, both PCs have WINXP on them. Good price too compared to other routers with similar features.
27 Dice Game
Setting up a home network is such a hit or miss proposition, that it is hardly fair to blame a specific product when failure occurs. There are too many variables to deal with.
I tried setting up a home network using D-Link's USB HPN system utilizing the houses's phone-lines with dismal results. I then tried the Network Everywhere 4-Port Cable/DSL Router and succeeded almost immediately. I did have to upgrade the firmware, but that was easy enough. The price is right and if it fails for you, send it back and keep spinning the dice.
28 Great Little Router
I am a home networking contractor. So, I have seen a lot of routers in my work. This little one is pretty impressive. It is of an old school style, it has a durable metal case. It is relatively easy to set up and has some impresseve features for the price. The DHCP ability is easy to use for Windows 98, ME, 2000, and XP. Access to the controls are easy and done through the Internet Explorer by typing a default IP address. I set this perticular model up on a DSL connection. The POPoE was easy to access in the setup and it was rather simple to make it talk to the DSL modem. The firewall is simple and effective, and there are even options to limit it as well. Print sharing, drive mapping, file sharing, and network gaming are all possible with this router. I now recommend this to any client that is looking for a low-cost, easy alternative to the more expensive Linksys hardware. If you know what your doing, or even if you don't, there should be little problem getting this little box to do what you want it to.
29 Don't try NR041 with XP
4 Port Cable/DSL Network Anywhere router works fine with Motorola SurfBoard and Linksys cable modems with Windows 9x, and Windows 2000. Absolutely with NOT work with Windows XP.
30 This router is terrible, try D-Link instead
I got this up and working in no time, however it is unreliable. After about 3 days the router was locked up, I thought no big deal. A week later the red diagnostic indicator stays on all the time and it is completely useless when this happens. Also the reset button is useless no matter how long you hold it down it does nothing...
31 DLink has better tech support
I was in the market for a cheap router solution. The two I picked were the this router and the DLink DI-604. I had trouble setting up w/ both routers, but in the end, I kept the DLink b/c they have support 24/7, where as the Linksys support is only 8-5 PST M-F. Of course, I was setting up the network on the weekend/at night, so DLink was easily the winner here. The Linksys router is less, but in my mind the 24/7 support is worth the extra money.
I agree w/ the review from "An electronics fan from Honolulu, HI USA", who said that no cat-5 cable was included. Shima-tech-services claim that the router comes w/ all the cables. Who do you believe?
32 Easy to Use
Super easy to set up. Just pop in the CD and follow the instructions. I had 2 computers set up in under 10 minutes.
Does all the work for you
33 Effective router switch
Pluses:
Housed in a metal casing, this is very small unit. ..., this is a great bargain!
Negatives:
It runs very hot.
No cat.5 cable included.
No support for larger network (net mask is 255.255.255.0)
Firewall:
Portscan reports all but two ports were in stealth condition. HTTP and AUTH were in closed-status and accessible only from internal interfaces.
Administration:
This router is managed by HTTP interface.
NAT is configurable via browser interface.
Default setting is all you need.
Class C; 254-host support with DHCP.
100-line logs report inbound/outbound access attempts - but no time stamp.
Dynamic and static route can be viewed and edited.
10/100 switch works well and can function as stand-alone 4-port switch.
1st port can uplink to another switch/hub.
WAN interface MAC address can be cloned.
IPSec, L2TP, PPTP passthroughs are supported for VPN.
DMZ host can be defined.
34 Big Bang for Little Buck
I've geen waiting to get a router as a firewall in my home until they were dirt cheap, but good. Here it is...and it works great too. Any idiot could install this thing in minutes, although this idiot made a mistake I want to pass on: If you're using a software firewall like ZoneAlarm, make sure you disable it before installing this router. Although this tripped me up for only 5 minutes, I can see where this would cause a serious headache for a novice (then again, a novice probably doesn't have a software firewall). Other than my initial stupidity, setup is extremely easy and the thing works as advertised. Cheap firewall, and now my laptop can share my home broadband connection when I bring it home from work.
The only negative I can think of is that the thing runs hot. I'm sure this is normal and not a problem. Just make sure you don't stack anything on top of it.
35 Big Bang in a Small Box
So you're worried about someone hacking into your home or small office PC, right? You've been told by a friend who's into computers or maybe the super-busy computer guy at work that you ought to get a firewall to protect your system. Woah, sounds complex, over your head, right? Not so, this 4 port broadband router made by Network Everywhere (it's all Linksys underneath) is simple enough to set up that a 10 year old could get it working in just a few minutes. It's small, unobtrusive form doesn't do justice to what's inside. It's got all of the features of units costing thre times as much and even more than some of them have. Start with the setup wizard and make a few guided choices based on how you are connecting to the internet. The next thing you know, you're surfing just like you've always done, but now you're behind a pitbull tough firewall that will keep the hackers on their side of the line. I almost forgot to mention, this unit will even let you share your now protected internet connection with other computers in your household. It's got a total of four network ports to hook other computers or network equipment to. It comes with all of the cables and instructions needed to be up and running in no time. Can you tell I'm excited about this product? I'm actually the "busy computer guy" that manages a big computer network for a living. I'll be reccomending these to the people that stop me in the hall and ask what they shoud do for their home broadband connections. Quick, powerful and inexpensive, what more could you want?
