Nokia 6200 Phone - Next Generation (AT&T)

1 nokia 6200 - solid phone for the serious user
This is a very good phone. I have had it for a couple months now, and i can't really find any real fault with it. For its small size it is packed with features. It has a large bright color screen which is readable in daylight. It uses EGPRS for fast internet, and in my area, ATT/Cingular has good reception for clear calling. It can operate at 850/1800/1900 frequencies which enables use essentially world wide. The speakerphone is strong and loud, and there is a voice recording feature also. Despite having features of an advanced phone, Nokia has retained its trademark user-friendliness in this phone. Scrolling over a feature with the 4-way nav button activates help text for information. Additional perks include MMS, polyphonic ringtones, and FM radio with headset included in the package.
The drawbacks are small keys, but within a week, using the keypad seems like old hat. Unfortunately it does not have a camera, but this was a generation before camera phones came out. Dust tends to collect under the screen over longer periods of time, but can be cleaned by opening up the external case. I invested in a cheap (made in china) leather case and since then i have not had dust problems. Overall this is a solid phone with features designed for serious users. People wanting cameras and mp3 players in their phones look elsewhere.
2 Solid phone
Purchased the 6200 as a replacement for the horrendous 3595 offered by AT&T wireless as an introductory GSM phone. The 6200 signal/voice quality blows the 3595 away.

The ergonomics are awkward for those with larger hands, but after a few days of use, the keypad is tolerable.

The complaints posted here about "dust under the screen" are bizarre -- just take the back off the phone, snap off the front cover, and CLEAN the inside of the screen and the face of the LCD! It takes all of about 30 seconds ....

3 takes a dip, doesn't skip
This is a great phone, and I was distraught when I realized that I had it on when I jumped in the pool for a couple of minutes. When I took the soggy handset in to get a replacement, I found out that Cingular didn't carry them anymore. Luckily, a rep there was nice enough to sell me her cherished 6200. Two weeks later, I thought I'd just test the old swimmer one more time, and IT WORKS!!! Now I have a backup for my next stupid move, and even more admiration for Nokia phones.
4 Nice phone but going to try a Nokia 8390
I think all the other reviews tell the story: great phone, great features, if you use them. Unfortunately I don't use the phone for anything other than as a phone. Give me a phone I can use anywhere. The color display is a problem for me, indoors it is fine but in areas where sunlight is intense it is very difficult to see the display. If key lock is on it is even worse, my ability to read this display is about 60% of my old 3360. I am going to look for a phone with a LCD display with lots of contrast and all the phone features of this phone (wish me luck). Any suggestions please email waynger@overbeckmachine.com
5 true to the NOKIA name!
You know what? I don't know when people don't just buy Nokia's and make themselves happy. I see all these bad reviews on some of the 'coolest' and 'newesr' phones out there with all these bells & whistles but one thing the other companies forget it actually making it functional enough so the end user isn't pissed off all the time ... I don't get it!

The point is FUNCTIONALITY. I say the above statement because I temporarily got ployed into the new high rez screen flip camera phone nonsense that's going on out there.

First off, I've purchases 2 plans and 6 lines of service with AT&T over past 3 months ... NO COMPLAINTS. What I did was I purchased through all the online web sites that offer money back to you to buy the phones and plans. First one with letstalk, then cellular choices. Both excelent. I tracked the progress of my phone and the shipping, total took 4-7 days for phone activation and shipment. One was with brining my number over also. So overall, time wise was great. Shipment came fine, no problems with phones etc. Coverage also great. Coverage goes hand in hand though, bad phone gives bad reception. DON'T BE QUICK TO BLAME AT&T.

When I got my order I got the Nokia 3200 - great phone by the way, you can see my review on it but it's ugly. I sold it and got the NEC 525. OMH BAD MISTAKE. Dropped calls, calls overlapping eachother, little and to poor reception. I actually lucked out and was able to SWAP that with a Nokia 6200. I have been so happy since. Not once have I had a dropped call or bad reception ... NOT ONCE! Same carrier, same location, different phone ... I makes a world of difference and I believe part of that is because it is TRI-MODE. The guy I swapped with worked for Nokia and wanted a flip phone. I talked to him two days later and he said "This is a nice toy to play with but I'm going back to Nokia in a week or so" and he did!

As for me, I've tried them all late: Nokia, Samsung, LG, and NEC and I must say, no one can beat the Nokia technology. They may not be the best looking phones (well actually the Nokias that are new in Asia, Middle East, and Europe right now are GORGEOUS and do just about anything you can imagine, one plays movies and one even measures your pulse :O)

NOKIA 6200 PROS: (theres just so many)
- SPEAKERPHONE once you have it, can't do without
- TRI-MODE and hense EXCELLENT RECEPTION
- NEVER ANY DROPPED CALLS
- TWO TONE ATTRACTIVE COLOR
- GPRS fast for those who use the internet
- STURDY & DURABLE some might call chunky
- NOKIA TRUE PROFILES
- RADIO ALARM and APPLICATIONS
- IR
-FM RADIO with headset with excellent RECEPTION
- PC connectivity
- EDGE reason for such strong reception, very little nokia's have this!
- SOUND QUALITY very nice and loud, clear, and good volume control
- SMS MMS JAVA if you need
- VOICE COMMANDS
- GO TO MENU OPTION

NOKIA 6200 CONS:
- Not the best COLOR RESOLUTION compared to others out there only 4,096-color
- Not a CON but the back battery cover has a little gap, doesn't fully close
- One thing that is a personal want is that I wish you can change the up and down arrows as they both go to contacts as well as the right key selection, don't need contacts that much ;)
- You'll need to download some GAMES WALLPAPERS and SOUNDS (get them free at www.zedge.no)
6 I love it!
I love it!Everything works great with this cell phone.
7 Finally a phone that wont Drop my lame AT&T signal
After coming so close to switching carriers, the Nokia 6200 saved the AT&T 2 year contact i purchased. My phone search included the LG 4015, Siemens S46 (great phone poor features), Nokia 3100, and Nokia 3595 (all free phones). Well, the saying you get what you pay for couldn't be more true, as the 6200 is the only phone that did not drop a signal. The reception is excellent and that was the most important feature to me.
8 All the features I wanted!
I purchased this cell phone in September 2003. It had a lot of the features that I was looking for - text messaging, color display, and internet capabilities. One of the interesting features of this phone is the radio, which only works if the ear piece (included) is plugged into the phone. Though I have only used this feature once thus far.

I give this phone only 4 stars, because lint and other particles like to get on the screen under the protective plastic.

9 Excellent business-class phone
Pros:
- Excellent inbound and outbound sound quality from included earpiece, handset, and speakerphone.
- Above average RF reception.
- EDGE data connectivity.
- Easy connectivity to PC via IrDA or USB.
- Easy to use user interface with excellent contacts (address book) implementation.
- Ring tones suitable for business use (lots of non-musical ring tones).
- FM radio.

Cons:
- Sub par LCD quality (passive matrix display).
- No Bluetooth.
- No digital camera (may be a plus to some).

- A bit large.
- The battery cover does not close tightly (can be fixed by inserting a piece of paper).
- Not Mac OS X friendly.
- Only one game (and a poor one at that).

Although Nokia 6200 is about to be replaced with 6230, which features smaller body, improved LCD, digital camera, AAC/MP3 audio, larger memory, and MMC memory card slot, 6200 is still attractive for many reasons. For one thing, 6200 is affordable. 6230 will cost significantly more. Secondly, it just works. For many users, particularly to business-oriented users, 6200 has almost all the features you will need.

Let's start with the user interface. The 6200 is based on Nokia's Series-40 operating system, featuring a proven (if somewhat boring) user interface that is easy to master and easy to use. Contacts list works the way one would expect. Its implementation of profiles is among the best in its class. It's highly configurable.

Another nicety is PC sync capability. If your computer features IrDA (infrared) port, which many notebooks do, all you need to do is download Nokia's PC Suite (free). After installing, you can easily sync contacts, calendar, and to do list from Microsoft Outlook or via PC Suite's organizer. Yup, you do not need to enter phone numbers one by one. In addition, you can upload Java applications (including games), wallpaper, and new ring tones with ease, all without connecting to pricy mMode (GRPS/EDGE). Using your PC, just download from many free websites and upload them to 6200 for free! If your computer lacks IrDA, you can purchase Nokia's USB data connection kit. Sadly, the phone lacks Bluetooth.

Although 6200 is a business-oriented phone, it does have few frills. Among the most fun is FM radio. Although the feature requires plugging in the earpiece (or optional stereo headset or docking station), it works well and you can save and name stations for easier operation. Included game is pretty lame, but you can easily download more games or upload via IrDA or USB.

What else can I say about 6200? It is an excellent phone for those looking for professional looking phone with professional quality feature sets that simply works well, all without high price tag.

10 Great phone !!!
I was in the hunt for a smartphone and even tried the Nokia 6820 (loved the flip open keyboard) but was disappointed with the PDA aspect of it and then heard about the Motorola MPX220 to be released in a month and decided to wait for it. For the time being I decided to pick up a Nokia 6200 which will eventually serve as my backup phone. When I brought it home and played with it I was amazed at the phones features and reception for the price. I would highly recommend it.
11 Keeps up the Nokia tradition
Another great phone from Nokia. Well, starting with the good part of this phone: exceptional reception, good call quality, love the speaker phone (very handy), intuitive menus, radio (needs stereo headset), mmode with EDGE tech, etc etc. Have been using this phone for about a month & I completely adore this phone except for its flimsy cheap plastic like feel. The keypad seems to be very cumbersome and requires your nails to dial numbers. This retards me of playing any games too though it only comes packed with a single "bounce" game. I am not a very big fan of camera phone & hence I am happy with the mmode & radio features. Only if it had bluetooth feature, it would've been the best selling phone hands down !! AT&T GSM coverage is quite good in my area and I do hope it gets better across the nation after the cingular merger.
12 Fantastic Phone
After returning my NEC 525 back to the store (poor listening volume), I went back to my tried and true Nokia brand. I purchased the Nokia 6200 and couldn't be happier. I live in the outskirts of Seattle and AT&T reception appears to be improving here. Volume on the phone is excellent and it has a speaker phone feature I use most of the time. Volume control on side if phone is also a nice touch. It's great being able to lay the phone on the seat or in your lap and have a clear conversation. Mmode works great and it has all the features you come to expect as far as contacts organizer, calendar, calculator, etc. It has downloadable ringtones you can associate to a group or profile. Would be nice to be able to associate with specific people but not that big of a deal. The screen is clear and key pad is adequate size. The phone has a growing list of accessories including various styles of cases and headsets. You can even add a combination camera and headset if you like. The headset connection is propriatary but you can purchase adaptors if you like. Phone size is perfect for me - palm size. The first thing that drew me to the phone was it's elegant appearance and distinctive tapered design. The phone also has an fm radio that works surprisingly well with a headset. Stereo headsets are available. One accessory I did try was the Nokia Music Stand/Battery Charger. It was a real disappointment and I would not recommend it -great idea and I hope it get's improved.
13 This cell rocks!!!!!!!!

14 Another great Nokia phone
I bought this phone four months ago and it is always reliable, never drops calls and best of all, has a long battery life and charges up very quickly. I always gets great reception and is crystal clear. The GPRS connection works well for downloading a large selection of ringtones from AT&T mLife. Overall, a great buy and very reliable.
15 the best among all
Nokia, the best among all, it made up of valuable and quality materials, can last longer than all the phones, even when fell from the most tallest building in thr world, can be maitained. so go for nokia phones to prevent your self from spending to go for maitanance of faults.
Thanks.
16 Nokia 6200 Comapred to Sony Ericsson T616
I used both Nokia 6200 and Sony Ericsson T616 with AT&T plan in Washington, DC metro area. This nokia has a much better reception. The battery life is great. Definitely recommend it. On the downside, it does not have bluetooth.
17 light, bright display, decent rececption, prone to drop call
I have had it for a month or so and I mostly like it.
The thing I really like about it is the bright display - really bright! and the keypad is back lit
Built in radio - good reception, and sound throught the built-in speaker is pretty good
Charges quickly and holds charge for a while
Phone book acceess is quick and intuitive
Entering numbers - it would have been convenient to be able to add tags to individual numbers
PIM functionality is so-so. Too cumbersome to navigate and enter data. Alarm clock is single alarm, no timer (Someday all phone will have touchscreens).
Too bad it needs a custom cable = $39.00 (or IR) for PC connections. Why can't they put a USB port on the phone?
Phone drops connections occasionally. Not clear why. But when connected sound quality is superb either through handset or headset.
AT&T service is mediocre.
18 Great phone AT&T Custumer Service Sucks
I bought this phone 2 weeks ago now and so far it works great every where I go. I upgraded from Motorola v70(the worst phone I ever had)
the only problem I have is that I couldn't port-in my previous number to my new ATT account(Amazon does not have any agreement with AT&T) I contacted AT&T customer care repeatedly to do the porting precess and each time I had to hung up after hours on hold (2 hours + and no response!!!!)
bottom line: I you can get this great phone through a carrier other than AT&T that would be a really big deal
19 Best phone I ever owned!
I love this phone. It't the fifth Nokia phone I've owned and by far the best. I have mine through Cingular and it's worked great in the U.S.A. as well as in Switzerland and England. I've had clear reception no matter where I've been. I almost bought the Sony Ericsson T-616 instead, and am now glad I didn't.

20 Great Phone
This is a great phone. Easy to use as all Nokias, light, great battery performance and a nice color display. AT&T includes a headset also. The phone has a radio builtin, also has a speaker which can be quite useful.

And I do think it's definitely stylish - but that obviously depends on one's taste.

I can only recommend this phone.

21 Great Piece-effective may not be stylish
If function is what your looking for, then this is a good piece. Great features, easily programable voice commands, used for easy data transfer over a USB or an infra red connect. I have had clear signal mostly over Missippi, Massachusetts, Nevada and S. California except for couple of places in Florida. Excellent easy touch organiser, and a good sharp alarm. However, the screen is a bit delicate and prone to scratches, so a lcd cover fixes that. Nokia could use a different color scheme instead of the Gold Leaf. Another thing to make it a top of the mark gadget, would be a connect to RJ 11 jack (to plug in a notebook modem socket). Overall, a very useful device, may not be stylish but definately functional.
22 good cell phone, ok GSM service
I love the speaker phone feature. Handsfree kit adapter is not a standard head phone jack. My other nokia hands free kit will also not work with this phone. Good thing is that my old battery charger works with this phone so now I can keep one at work and one at home!
I got this phone 2 days ago and still have not re-charged it! I even got OK signal inside most of the malls. I was getting poor AT&T wireless signal inside my home with my old cell phone 3360 which required me to charge my phone often. GSM signal is somewhat better in my home. So far no dropped calls. Hope AT&T's GSM service gets better with time!
23 Don't believe everything you read!
Don't believe what all those other people said! This phone has been BY FAR the best that I've ever seen or used. It's compact design and functionality is a major plus. I believe some of the complaints that I read were a lack of good reception. I admit that this phone gets awful reception inside buildings if you're not near windows, but that is due to the GPRS service that this phone operates on. That was one major thing that the salesman at the AT&T store said to me. BUT, he also said that down the road in 6 months or so, GSM/GPRS would replace digital like digital replaced analog. So there's hope in store for us! I've also seen a bit of a drawback in the accessories department. It is my understanding that this phone isn't quite as popular yet, but I know if you log on to nokiausa.com they have all the available products. This has been the best phone purchase that I've ever made and I've gone through quite a few. And at the price that it's at on Amazon right now, who wouldn't want to buy it?
24 A ringing endorsement-for any other cell phone
What a p-o-s phone!

I've never had a product of any kind that had a mind of its own quite like this one. Avoid at all costs.

25 Mixed bag
I was expecting a lot from this phone. It certainly seemed to
be a big step up from my old Audiovox. However, there are several
drawbacks as other reviewers have mentioned.

Pros:
- phone is very compact
- national service plan features and pricing are good.
- Tri-mode GSM is supposed to work internationally
- color screen is bright and pretty clear
- you can easily customize the phone's features with menus
- M-mode plan is reasonably priced for 1 MB / month
- headset works well

Cons:
- AT&T signal quality is very poor in Bay Area. I fail to
get a signal about 50% of the time.
- GPRS data connections are even less reliable than voice calls.
- I've repeatedly gotten "SIM card errors" from the phone.
These generally go away when I power the phone off then
on again.
- I've gotten a couple of other errors where the phone
is in "restricted" mode, also requiring power-off.
- Phone has accumulated dust underneath the glass screen cover.
- I haven't found a way to access yellow pages or similar
information via m-mode.
- there aren't many Nokia or third-party accessories available
for this model.

26 pretty much a good all-round phone
my previous phone was a nokia 7210 then i got this is one. the 6200 gets better much better reception compared to the 7210... problems with recepetion however is caused is the actual gsm service an not the actual phone.reception bugs should have been corrected before te service was released. i must say that the color screen is excellent and colors are vibrant and lively. the phone only comes with one pre-loaded game but more are available online along with ring-tones etc online from nokiausa.com. the address book is huge, you can store multiple numbers per contact and the address book synchs easily with outlook express. battery life was impressive, i got about 4 1/2 hrs talk time an stanby time was about 9 days. the polyphonic rings, stereo fm radio(headset must be connected however), infrared, speakerphone, organiser/calender, currency converter, voice activation are some of the many nice little features that this phone is literally packed with. the only downside that i fould was that there are really no accesories for the phone likes cases, front & back covers etc which u can generally get with other nokia's.
27 Nokia 6200
I've owned this phone for about three months.

Pros: Lightweight, can synch w/ Outlook Express, speakerphone(great), headphone, polyphonic ring tones, voice recorder, to do list, good sound from earpiece, side volume control, internet capable, fm radio(only accessible through headphone, voice dialing

Cons: Poor reception (in part due to At&t gsm network), occasional SIM card errors, occcasional no service errors, will not work in some rural areas, small keypad buttons, games, phone case hard to find

In spite of the pros I give this phone an average rating due to the poor coverage of the at&t gsm network. They should have gotten the bugs out before they rolled out the service. I replaced both the phone and the sim card and still have the poor reception and sim card issues.

Also couldn't find the nokia leather case so am using a small erickson that fits great.

Three stars.

28 No phone is perfect. This one met my criteria.
My requirements in replacing my aging (OK, 1.5 year old which was after having a StarTac for 2 years) Panasonic Allure were that the new phone be cooler, have a lower SAR rating, small, better speaker volume, and non flip. And since I replace phones every couple of years, had to be <$.... I got what I was looking for. Plus it syncs with my address book in Outlook via IR. The phone's polymorphic ring abilities are terrible. The screen is too small to really send messages. ATT GSM coverage is only slightly better than their digital coverage. But the volume is good and when I have long conversations I use a headset so I don't care that the phone speaker is tinny sounding. Reception is better at my house than with my old phone, and hopefully I'm toasting my brain a little less with the lower SAR. All my contacts are in the phone and updating them is a breeze. And the phone does have a bit of coolness. Next year's phone is gonna have blue tooth...
29 Great phone Nokia did a great job
Nokia finally stepped up, This is by far the best phone I ever owned. The reception is outstanding, and the battery lasts forever. I can't say anything bad about this phone, The radio has better reception than my car radio. The Internet is like lighting, and size is just right. My friend owns a Motorola T720 and the reception is bad, and the battery dies after two calls. My advice is get this phone, you woun't be disappointed.
30 Annoying dust obscures screen
This cell phone is cute and small and the screen is nice. But the screen attracts dust through the microphone holes, which then gets trapped under the glass, making it impossible to read the screen. My friend has the same phone, and the same problem. Unfortunately this one annoying disadvantage outweighs all the nice advantages of this phone. If you are still planning on buying it, get a plastic cover so less dust gets in.
31 Love the Phone Reception
I am using AT&T and just retired my Motorola T720 for a couple of reasons, first the reception was not that great, second I could never hear it ring. I think it was the model I had because friends of mine that had the verizon version had a louder ring. The Nokia 6200 has proven itself in those areas. The only thing that I wish was different is the headset connection.
32 nice design, but lacking the necessary feature
i bought this phone a week ago when i upgraded from a 5165. with my 5165 i got excellent reception everywhere i went. with this new model, i'm lucky if i can get reception half of the time i really need to use my cell to make a call. it's true, the design is cool, the phone is lightweight, the features are clutch, and the speakerphone puts the icing on the cake. however; nokia was apparently too busy worrying about adding a screensaver and overly-contrasted screen to the phone that they forgot to take care of the internal antenna and make sure it actually worked before shipping these bad boys out to us consumers. good thing at&t has a 30 day refund policy.
33 Very cool
Wow - this phone is great! At first I didn't think the extra $50 over the Nokia 3560/95 (which I also briefly owned) was a lot. But this phone is smaller, has a nicer screen, and even looks and feels better (backlight doesn't creep out the sides, etc). The produces a much nicer picture than other color phones. Downloadings games, applications, news, etc is as simple as browsing the web on this webcam and costs at most $.03/kb with att which isn't bad for no monthly fee. This phone also has great reception. Better than the 3560/95 in my area. I haven't travelled with it yet but the biggest limitation travelling will be finding GSM towers, not the phone.

In short - good phone worth the money.
