Nokia 6820 Phone - Next Generation (AT&T)

Compras Nikon
Bluetooth
Overview

Compatible with AT&T cell phone service, the Nokia 6820 is one of Nokia's series of phones featuring a cleverly-designed flip-open QWERTY keyboard, intended to provide quicker and easier text input. When the keyboard is in use, the 6820's high-resolution 128 x 128-pixel, 4,096 color screen automatically rotates from a vertical to a horizontal orientation for easier viewing. There are also a bunch of other great features with this phone, including a digital CIF camera and video recorder, Bluetooth infrared data transfer, voice dialing, mobile Internet connectivity, high-speed data transmission, and more.

Calling Features

Used simply as a phone, the 6820 features a 4-way joystick for easy navigation to a variety of calling features, including voice dialing for up to 10 numbers, voice commands for up to 9 items, integrated handsfree speakerphone, and the ability to record and send memos, conversations, and sound clips (up to 90 seconds). You'll also get the usual array of polyphonic ring tones, calling modes (including vibrate) and much more. Nokia also supports TTY/TDD (Telecommunication Device for the Deaf), and hearing aid support for the Nokia LPS-3 Loopset, (adapter and Loopset sold separately).

Messaging and Internet

The phone's snappy new design makes it ideal for messaging; you can actually type on the QWERTY keyboard, no more hunting and pecking through the ten key system. In addition to text and picture messaging, you can also send up to four linked messages with up to 160 characters each, and take advantage of distribution lists and predictive text input. The 6820's XHTML browser provides high-speed data transmission via GPRS or EDGE, and access to work and private POP3 and IMAP4 email accounts. You can also send MMS (multimedia messaging service) packets containing combined image, video, text, and voice clips to compatible phones or PCs. To expand your phone's functionality, you can download additional Java applications to add to the ones already included with the phone: E-mail Client, Instant Messaging, Converter, World Clock, and Portfolio Manager, among others.

Organizer

The Nokia 6820's organizer features include a 3,000 character notepad function (now easy to use with the flip out keyboard), as well as the usual phone book with up to 500 contacts, a full calendar, and a to-do list with priority levels, among others. You can also sync up your organizer data with your PC wirelessly via your Bluetooth connection, using the included software (Sync ML or Nokia PC).

Cameras, Fun, and Games

An integrated CIF digital camera lets you take 352 x 288 pixel photos, which you can view on the phone's 4,096 color display, or send to your computer or via MMS to a friend, using the XHTML internet connection. The camera provides night shooting mode, a self-timer feature, and a video clip recorder. Additionally, you can add thumbnail-sized photo images to contacts in your phone book, change your graphical user interface with a variety of themes, and download new ring tones to add to the ones already included with the phone. There are also two games included with the phone: Bounce, Bowling, Chess Puzzle, Water Rapids, and Backgammon

Vital Statistics

The Nokia 6820 weighs 3.53 ounces and measures 1.85 x 4.21 x 0.79 inches. Its Lithium Ion batteries are rated at a minimum of 490 minutes digital talk time, and 420 hours digital standby time. It runs on the GSM at 850/1800/1900 MHz. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

In the Box Nokia 6820 cell phone, 850 mAh Li-Ion battery, rapid travel charger, headset, and AWS SIM card.

1 Gr8 phone...as far as its intended functionality
This is an awesome phone.....But its not for everyone....The primary users should be those who are messaging addicts...Do not buy it for its camera feature
2 Finally a phone that not a toy.
For some reason cell phone makers keep moving into making more phones that are more like toys. Musical ringers and games couldn't matter more to me. I recenty got this phone and have phone i really like. A couple of feature that I really enjoy are:

1. Its easy to read the text on the screen. And in some applications you can even adjust the text size.

2. Fast user input. I'm use to typing on text messages on a normal keypad, but the option of opening up a qwerty keypad is a nice change.

3. Access to my POP email. This was the selling feature for me. The phone has an application that I can set to download email from my business account directly to the phone. This is much better then using the browser.

4. Speaking of browser, it has a decent one, but the EGPRS data transfer is the best part. Very fast.

5. Bluetooth Connectivity. I can backup my contacts, notes, pictures, etc right to my PC. And if you have Outlook, you can have a full sync to your phone. (If you have Outlook Express like me, you can only sync your contact list. Still good enough.) And i'm looking forward to using it with a headset soon.

6. It has normal ringers. I know thats not a big thing nowdays, but I like my phone to sound like a phone. I'll totally miss it if its some musical melody or song (and it comes with a few musical ringers if you must have one. They don't sound half bad and you can download more.

7. Sound quality is great. People can clearly here me. And the speaker phone works well, even in the car.

The reason i'm giving it 4 stars is because there are a few areas Nokia could have improved on. The battery life on the phone runs about 3 days on a normal charge. Its not that bad a headache, but I've used a few 6 day battery life phones. Also, while the screen color and has some tight pixels, its also has a slow refresh. And the camera quality is very low. I didn't get it for the camera, but I've seen much better quality on other phones.

Overall this is a phone that I am very pleased with and it may be replacing my palm soon as I can more comfortable with it. I would suggest this phone to anyone who likes to have access to their email has a good serious business phone.
3 Nokia really missed out with this phone
This phone has a large array of features that you think would be useful. If you are wanting a camera phone...go somewhere else..liek the lg1400...I love Nokia...but this phone takes small tiny pictures...even for a camera phone...and dont even dare think about shaking any..lol....It is a novelty cam at best...other cams offer twice the resolution...The screen is small and not too sharp....and it does NOT have a speakerphone...it is called a loudspeaker...Cingular was quick to point that out to me. It is no where close to what you hear motorolas volume at. Especially the nextels ..which can be too loud....I find myslef having to put it on loudspeaker if I am in a noisy place and holding it up to my ear....the volume just isnt too great overall...or maybe I am just going deaf at 26. It is a cute and small phone...nice conveniant size...and the keyboard is surprisingly easy to type on...I have enjoyed that part of the phone a lot..The battery life is nothing like what amazon reports it at....so dont get your hopes up there...Nokia is taking a step in the right direction with this phone...and they have a lot of useful orginizational tools here...just treat it as a mid grade phone that introduces you to the nicer things and you will be fine. These newer phones are not as sturdy as the old 5100s and such so be careful...:)...
4 Awesome phone!
This phone is great because:
1.It has a QWERTY keyboard.
2.There is a camera.
3.You don't have to press numbers to write a message.
4.It includes the phone, charger, battery, and headsets.
5.You can download gmes, applications ,and ringtones.
6.The phone has a videorecorder that records a while.
7.The phone has a recorder also.
8.It is very easy is to send a message because it is made for messaging.
9.This phone is great!
5 This is not a "camera" phone
This is a great phone for communication. I've used it for accessing ICQ, send out email messages, send out text messages. It works great for my purpose.

What it does not do well is taking photos. Forget about the camera, it's virtually junk. The ring tone is not impressive compared to something like the Sony T620. Only 16 bit vs available 32 bit ring tone capability.

The phone is small, but offers a nifty querty keyboard that you can open up and use. It takes some getting used to, but I'm a fast learner and fast typer so it works great for me.

It has speakerphone... oh yeah, speak to it like you would a walkie-talkie and you never have to press your ears against the thing to listen.

This phone is all about communication and not about how good it looks. Don't expect themes, fancy icons or large LCD screen to view photos. The Nokia 6820 has color, but only at ... 4000?

One thing I wish it could improve on is the voice dialing, should allow for more voice dialing setup than ... I think it max out at 7 or 9 numbers. The number dialing pad is a little bit difficult to press, but it probably bothers other people more than it does to me.

Oh, yes... one other negative point about the 6820 is that the navigation is SLOW! Much slower than Sony's T620. 6820 uses Java, so that could be the problem... but going through the menu is way too slow compared to other phones. It doesn't freeze up or have any bugs, but I wished it could go through the menu a bit faster.

The color of the phone and the design is really nice...

Oh, it offers infrared and Bluetooth connectivity. Very useful to transfer files or manage files via a laptop/computer. I transferred tones and images between my phone and my friend's Sony T620 without any problems.

6 Great phone!
1.It has a keyboard kind of like a computer has
2.Has a camera
3.You get a SIM card, headphones,and a charger
4.You don't have to use the numbers when you write a massage
5.It is an awesome phone!

7 the best phone i seen
this phone rocks if you like pimp phones get this one cause it is really good camara 2x zoom inside great it is the phone of your dreams !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
8 Another great Nokia product
I doesn't get much better than this... If you need a small phone and do a lot of text messaging or IM, then this phone is for you. I upgraded from a Nokia 6200 and I am very pleased. The full QWERTY keyboard is the best part. The 5 way joystick is easy to use and accurate to the touch. Sure the camera isn't great, but what phone camera is? If you need a camera go get a real one! I highly recommend this phone, plus Cingular is a great company to use as the provider.
9 I had the 6800 fomr the gate
it seems that as a second entry from the beloved 6800, nokia missed a great opportunity. They added a lame camera and still the same screen?? It seems they just shrunk it a bit and added EDGE/Bluetooth. geez.. they could of hit a home run if they juiced up the screen res. and upped from series 40. Can you beliveve they didn't go to series 60??? The camera wasn't needed since you buy all those attachments already for the 6800... some really nice camera attachments are out there plus other things for the radio etc.

I am about to change to it anyway if it isn't a step back since I have a bug in my 6800 that seems to not go away... shame.
10 Simply the Best
Positive Points:
Good Key pad, Good Sound Clarity, Speaker Phone is helpfull, Can be used as Organiser.

Negative Points:
Buying it from AMAZON.com

11 Solid Phone, but screen and camera subpar
This phone works great for the main reasons for which I bought it. It has great battery life, good reception, and bluetooth capability. The fold out keyboard also makes entering numbers into the phonebook and text messaging a breeze.

I didn't really want a camera phone but thought that it was neat that this phone had one. I was really disappointed by the camera and screen on this unit though. It is nearly impossible to take a usable photo on it and the screen leaves a lot to be desired. If the screen and camera were a little better, this would definitly be one of the top phones on the market.

The bluetooth is very convenient (an added headset makes talking while driving much safer), and the loudspeaker is adequate. Reception and battery life are far superior to my old motorola.

Overall, this is a solid phone eventhough I feel that it is a bit overpriced. Had I known the camera and screen were this poor, I would of spent the extra money for a V3. I know I did not buy it for the camera, but why would Nokia add a feature that is almost unusable? Kind of a bummer. If you want a solid phone that with good battery life, reception, loudspeaker and bluetooth this is a good buy if you can find it priced for under $200.
12 Excellent Phone
I enjoy using this phone: it is clear, loud enough, has good reception, has speaker phone (!!!), and most of all it is very cool. The only "complaint" is that it would be really nice to have the same phone with higher quality camera.
13 good functional phone, not very cool though
I've had this phone for 5 months. I haven't had any problems during this time and overall I am happy with it.
Pros:
- Full keyboard is great for text messaging or adding contacts/notes
- Good reception
- Small and lightweight
- Sound quality is good
- Loudspeaker is useful, especially when you are put on hold.

Cons:
- Screen can display only 4k colors. Most phones today support 64k. The colors are not very vivid. Due to these factors I never really use the camera.
- The ringing volume and the quality of the speaker leave something to be desired. My friend has a sony t610 and there is no comparison.
- The fliptop is a bit flimsy
- Doesn't have some advanced features found on phones like the motorola v600 and sony t610
14 Good cell phone + Basic PDA
Features that made me buy this phone:
1. Sync up with outlook without any issue(real easy).
2. Small in size + Full QWERTY keyboard
3. Fast response to contact search.
5. Blue tooth enabled
6. Tri band.

Pros:
# Full QWERTY keyboard
# Fast outlook sync up (works great after I downloaded the 6.2 version of the software from nokiausa.com)
# Free PC suite software that is really stable and let's you edit a lot of stuff in the cell phone through PC.
So practically you can edit all your phone data from pc.
# Blue tooth/IR works great for outlook sync up. I did not test it for blue tooth head set.
# Small size
# Fast software response.
# international.(tri band)

Cons:
# poor camera/graphics quality
# reception is not nokia quality (Nokia 6010 is much better than 6820)
# ok battery life

Bottom line it is a very nice cell phone with all the basic PDA functionality.
It has everything that I need. :-)

15 Love the keyboard, but more memory would be nice...
This phone is great... I bought it for the keyboard and text messaging, but have fallen in love with the calander and other features. The camera is fun, but the quality is not great by any stretch of the imagination.

My only big complaint is the limited memory. If you want to add a snapshot to many of your contacts, or add too many new games, you are going to run out of space fast. On top of that, you can't delete a lot of the applications. There are games I know I will never play, but I'm stuck with them wasting valuable memory space. Still, for my purposes, this is the bast phone out there.
16 Comment on Fas "Fas"'s review
It definitely possible to send a text message to an email address without using the mMode. You just go to Messages+Text Messages+Create SMS Email.
Othervise, I also love the phone. So far, I have no complaints, and I highly recommend it :)
17 Dell Axim X30 users MUST read
this phone is small, and has qwerty keyboard
I have this phone unlocked to use with T-Mobile
however, this phone has severe problem connecting with Dell Axim X30
that is...the bluetooth don't like each other, causing freeze all the time, even upgrade ROM to A05 on Dell; no problem on ipaq
18 WoW
This may lack Smartphone features but it's loaded with Smart ideas

This phone is like a mini office on the go. Entering data and text is no longer a chore. The qwerty keyboard feature is what sold me on this phone. The phone is loaded with other features not noted by the other reviewers.

Use the joystick and navigate....

>Menu>Applications>Collection>Select application

Here you will find 3 useful software programs:

ConverterII: use to converts most temps, weights, areas lengths, volumes & currencies

PortfolioII: use to enter investment info

World clockII: use to find worldtime using a map

Next Feature.....The ALARM CLOCK will wake you up. It's easy to set. It's loud and the light bars on the keypad flash brightly.

The light bars are actually bright enough to illuminate a soft glow of light that is usefull for opening doors in the dark.

The qwerty keypad has a backlit button.

The camara is a low resolution unit and pictures are grainy. However, set the image quality to high and these pictures are suitable for emailing and inserting into projects.

Some things I don't like about this phone:

1. The screensaver is stupid! It's a black screen with the time.
To date there are no downloadable screensavers available.

2. The screen resolution is not optimized for graphics, pictures are pixalated and some wall papers block phone info on screen.

3. This phone is really small..I wish the screen was a little bigger.

4. Non expandable memory shared by graphics and data.

Overall it's the best phone I ever owned. AT&T service has been great so far and Amazon was super fast in sending the phone out it was ready to use on arrival. Thanks

19 Excellent phone, but somewhat fragile
I did my research when buying this phone and thought it was the best option at the time. Overall I have been quite happy with the phone and it's functions. However, it is not as sturdy as other Nokia products. One accidental drop on loose dirt damaged the light. I owned a Nokia phone that survived a trip out the window of a moving car without so much as a scratch. Don't carry this phone without a protective case.

The sound quality is significantly better when using the headphone, but unless you have very large ears you will likely find the ear piece too large and uncomfortable. While this should be an easy problem to remedy I have not found headphones fitted with the requisite adapter readily available.

As for AT&T GSM service I have been less than impressed. Text messages can't be sent to email addresses unless connected to mmode and are charged as more expensive mmode KB and even then it's a slim chance they'll actually arrive. I have spent hours on the phone with AT&T and have not been able to resolve the issue.

I have not once had a correct invoice. Good luck.

I have been an AT&T customer for three years now and am quite disappointed with the decline in their customer service and in the quality of their new services. They do, however, trump Sprint and with the acquisition of Cingular are promising expanded services. We'll see, I'm not buying out of my plan yet...
20 Absolutely Fantastic Phone!
I have overall been disappointed with Nokia in the past, finding that Samsung and Motorola tended to have better quality phones. While this phone obviously doesn't have the same quality construction as Motorola does, the Nokia 6820 is the best Nokia I have ever used. What makes it so great is the versatility and the number of features it has. The best features that I use most often are:

1) Great audio quality overall. Handset quality is great, as is the speakerphone quality and the headset audio quality.

2) Camera phone. A decent camera phone for taking quick pictures, movies, and having general all around fun with.

3) Flip open full keyboard, so that thanks be to God I finally get to stop fumbling around with that stupid intuitive text input that never works. Anyone who sends a lot of text messages, uses the calander or organizer will absolutely love the keyboard.

4) One nice thing about Nokias is that they have a ton of ring tone and game choices. If you love your cell phone games or changing your ring tones everyday, Nokia beats everyone else.

5) Bluetooth wireless technology, so that I can transfer data to and from my computer without messing with any cables. This is great for putting photos and memos on the computer and transferring calander data to my phone.

My biggest concern is that I have found Nokia phones lower quality construction to lead to lower prices, but they also don't last as long. I can tell using the phone that it feels a little flimsier than Motorolas do, but as long as I'm not planning on droppingg the phone or running over it with my car it should be just fine. I wouldn't use it for business purposes and hand one out to all my employees, because you tend to want a little more rugged a phone for that. Other than that it meets or surpasses all of my needs and surely won't disappoint any already established Nokia phone fans.
21 Wouldn't wish ATT on my worst enemy
Love the phone. ATT is absolutely the worst. I have had ATT for 4 years. Against my better judgement, when I added my daughter to my service, I renewed my contract and bought a new phone. In the past, every change I've made to my service (upped my minutes, etc) has resulted in errors in billing (always in their favor, of course) and HOURS on the phone trying to get them fixed. When I made this change, again they messed up. Due to past experience, I made a note of the time when I placed my call. I was on the phone for 3 hours and 7 minutes. I finally told them to just disconnect my service, after being transferred to the wrong department numerous time, being on hold for 30 plus minutes each time, only to have someone, again, tell me that I had been connected to the wrong department. When I finally got the right department, he acknowledged there was a billing error but refused to correct the problem unless I made a phone payment for the amount due. I recieved the bill on September 16th, it is now September 25th. My bill is not late, he just said it was their policy. I told him to disconnect my account, so I'm stuck with a phone I love with no service.

I am the most patient person in the world but I can tell you it is just not worth it to deal with this company. I also had a friend do the same thing recently because when she called they told her that "what they advertise and what you get with your service isn't the same thing".

I knew better, and still did it. Hope you can learn from my experience. And yeah, they did activate the phone right away like was said in another review..but that's it as far as service.
22 ATT Service
Guys...I normally dont write reviews.....writing this out of frustation......This is my first ever review

If you wana save your time ..energy....money.....PLEASE DO NOT BUY ATT SERVICE..(Though I am with them for last 3 years...cos of my lazyness)...you will be disappointed......ATT customer service ..is THE WROST. Customer service REP.....doesnt know about Plans....they dont know how to talk to customer....n so on...(I can not explain my experience cos its 4 week.....4 hrs long story)... PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT BUY ATT SERVICE......this is my humble....request....Even after reading this....if you decide to buy ATT service...i would say you r the foolest guy on the earth....cos till now i am the foolest....(using it since last 3 years)....all the best
23 Both the Phone and Service very Satisfactory
A few weeks backs back, I ordered this phone along with AT&T service through Amazon. I had done extensive research before deciding on going for this one. I initially wanted a flip phone but did not like any of the Samsungs or Motorola's available.

I was initially debating between the Motorola V600 and this one but finally decided to go for this one for a couple of reasons. I went and looked at the V600 at Frys and it appeared to have a very cheap exterior, especially the keyboard. I wasn't sure if it was durable. Moreover I read that the V600 doesn't come with the necessary cables and/or software which would have to be bought seperately. Though the V600 had some advantages like Quad band GSM, flip style and a nice screen, the cons overweighed the Pro's and I opted for the 6820.
I received this phone a week back and should say that I'm quite impressed. All the features I tested, such as Bluetooth, Infrared, Qwerty keyboard work as advertised. The following are my opinions about this phone:

Pros:
Bluetooth - Works like a charm with my jabra headset. I can turn it on/off on the fly. But beware it drains the battery.
Infrared - Used it to sync the phone book with outlook. Transfer pictures. Edit phone book. Works like a charm.
Software - The phones comes with a lot of free software that I found Very useful.
Reception - Excellent
Qwerty Keyboard- This definitely is what makes this model unique.
Looks much better. Slicker and stylish compared to the 6800. 6800 is like the neandrathal of 6820.
Wealth of other features like Voice activate dialing, EDGE etc.
Customizable Menu's, comes with three different profiles, Normal , Silent and Meeting that you can customize even further.

Neutral:
Speakerphone - Low on volume but still serves the purpose

Cons:
Poor Screen quality - I mean for such a small screen they could have a 65000 pixel resolution. Samsung has a much better screen at a much cheaper price.
Camera - Again I know that this is not supposed to be its strength but I felt the quality of the camera was very disappointing. Why have it in the first place if its useless ?
GSM bands -Not a Quadband phone. What a shame, I can't flaunt it in India.

There were some features on the phone that I wasn't sure about. Once I went through the manual it was very clear. So for users who want to leverage the large range of features that come with this phone, I highly recommend reading the manual.

Coming to the service, I've been very pleasantly surprised by AT&T's prompt response.
FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN SWITCHING TO AT&T FROM ANOTHER CARRIER: Once I received the phone by mail, I contacted AT&T to port my existing T-Mobile number over to AT&T and they did it immediately. The trick is to not activate the number thats assigned to you when you buy the service through Amazon. By the time my phone was charged and I turned it on the transfer was complete and I was good to go. And what to say about the coverage, I always seem to be having a strong signal no matter where I go. No more missed calls and garbled voices on the other end.
So far its been a great experience after switching from Samsung and T-Mobile.
I would like to revise my rating to 5 but its too bad that Amazon doesn't provide that facility.
24 Not AT&T
I just felt the need to back a few people on AT&T Wireless. They are the worst! I have had soooooo many unwanted charges on my bill. They have the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Also, I am in college and go to see my parents only 1 1/2 hours away and I have never been able to use my phone while seeing them. Never! This is after AT&T promised it would work in that area. After the contract is up I will never return to such crappy service.
25 NO AT&T
AT&T has the worst customer service ever. Do not buy from them you will regret it. The phone is good but at&t is horrible. Expect unwanted charges on your bill.
26 Great phone I hope
I plan to be moving overseas and the present phone could not support what I needed. So I bought the 6820. I took it to verizon to have the chip put in and the guy behind the counter just looked at me blinking like a frog in a hail storm and said verizon doesn't have sim cards. Oh well, here's hoping the system overseas called "Orange" can do better. We'll see. Great size and weight.
27 Great Phone, Surprisingly good service from AT&T
I recently lost my T-mobile instrument...a clunky Nokia 3650. As I was not qualified for an instrument rebate on T-mobile and could take my number along with me, I reluctantly moved over to AT&T (After reading poor reviews on their service) and bought this phone.

-AT&T surpassed my expectations and exceeded the A+ service I was getting form T-mobile. My Number was moved over without much trouble at all.

-Great phone..has everything I need and more (I am quite an advanced user)

-Great looking, compact and light. Excellent battery life

One piece of advice which could save you $$$ is, check to see if your company has an agreement with AT&T. Even on personal phones...my company did and I save 14% off my monthly bill with no activation fees.

In all, this phone feels a generation ahead of my Nokia from exactly a year ago..what a difference a year makes. You will not be disappointed!

28 would love to have it but Amazon has become a mess and...
can't deliver the goods. After ordering, I received a notice from Amazon that I had to call AT&T to complete the credit process. When I called the number provided, AT&T told me that they had no record of the order and gave me Amazon's number - her supervisor had informed her that she was not to waste any time on Amazon customers. So after spending a considerable amount of time trying to work with Amazon people, I'm now told that they are standing by their original message. WHAT A BUNCH OF IDI0TS! how do they run a biz like this? It would have been nice if they could actually fullfil the order...
29 6820 Good, but know what you are getting
Now had the phone for about a month, updated:

I like the phone, got it 1 week ago,
it does what i wanted it to do.

Pro:
*Voice dial seems to work very well
*Sync over infrared works fairly well

Cons:
*Speaker is NOT as loud as i would like,
hard to hear even if set to highest level

*Camera exists, but pictures are really bad
I would say snapshots are useless, but in movie mode
it's a bit better. The max video/audio recording time is 100 seconds
you can probably fit 3,4 video clips.
I would say if looking for camera phone, look somewhere else
(a bit irritating to have a feature that works below acceptable)

*Cannot customize joystick shortcuts
Hardwired to Contacts (good)
Calendar (good)
SMS (so-so)
Camera (bad, since the camera performance is bad)

*Keypad buttons hard to press, have to use two hands to call:
one to hold the phone, another to dial the number, old phone
was much more driving friendly.
The two light bars also make it hard to feel the button locations

*Screen color resolution is bad (bad pictures from camera look even worse)

*Key guard mode is complicated to activate
But there is automatic key guard activation, lets say activated in 2 minutes,
although if you have headphones it make beep, which makes you wonder if there is an
sms or voice mail

*Screen saver is poorly done -- shows clock which is exactly what one would want,
but you can barely see the time and the icons for waiting messages are really
small and impossible to see

*Loud speaker option does not have a separate key, as well as the volume control
and if there is something on the screen (like if you dialed a number then dial
an access code or something) you cannot adjust the volume

*Mute option is not (easily) available (very useful when dialing in access codes)

*The ring tones that come with the phone are bad (just because it is a business
oriented phone does not mean it shall sound like computer beeper from the 50th).
You can transfer midi tones over the infrared, but it turned out to time consuming
since the midi on the phone sounds quite different than on computer speakers

30 Amazon is great.. phone is great, just say away from AT&T
WARNING: AT&T representatives ("Dawn: R361" and "Max: N360") themselves said during my troubleshooting (as detailed below) that I should NOT have bought through Amazon, and that they have received a barrage of complaints from Amazon buyers! I still really like Amazon, but they're integration with AT&T is non existent. People should not have to wait 2-3 days for service after they receive the phone. Buy the same phone on Amazon, but a different carrier.
31 Great Phone
I have tried SprintPCS, Verison Wireless and now ATT and decided to go with the 6820. I love the phone - syncs (using bluetooth) great with my outlook on my PC/laptop and the bluetooth headset (Jabra BT250) works great as well with it. The keyboard is just amazing - very useful to quickly add an appointment or send an SMS. The only regret I have is the screen size (compared to the font size used) - wish it were a little bit bigger (made me consider the 6600 from T-Mobile for a while but the 6820 is a winner overall for me). The camera is inferior compared to other phones but again this is not a camera, its a phone first.

Pros:
+ Keyboard, keyboard, keyboard ...
+ bluetooth
+ small and compact
+ Nokia PC Suite that syncs flawlessly with Outlook
+ builtin Loudspeaker
+ Infrared

Cons:
+ Screen size
+ Lack of customizability in the Calendar app (specifically for font size)

32 Does everything well
I got this phone specifically to have a phone that I could sync with a PC. Unlike the Motorola V600, the Nokia PC software suite is free. (Don't use the software that comes in the box. Download the new version off the Nokia web site.)

I bought a USB bluetooth adapter, and installed the drivers for that. Then installed the phone software. I got everything configured and did the synchronization. Bottom line is that within an hour I had a phone with my MS Outlook contacts, calendar, and notes all synchronized. Everything worked flawlessly. Transferring pictures to and from the PC worked flawlessly.

As some have pointed out, the pictures and video are not high-quality. Yeah, well it's a phone after all. You want great pictures? Get a digital camera. The pictures and video are good enough.

The interface on this phone is particularly easy to use. For me, the test of a good interface is whether I have to read the manual. So far I've done everything I wanted to do, and haven't cracked open the manual. Eventually I will, but having not done so yet shows the quality of the user interface.

Did I mention the fold-out keyboard? At first I thought I wouldn't use it much. That lasted until the first word. Then I was sold. Another nice feature is that if you've locked the keyboard (through the software) when you open the fold-out keyboard, the lock is removed.

Your previous Nokia power supplies (e.g., 8260, 3560) will work with this phone, but the headsets will not.

Sound quality/connectivity is at least as good with this phone as with my old TDMA phone.

In short, an extremely well thought-out phone.

33 It's a great phone when it works
I got this phone about 10 days ago. This was the phone that I always want. I could schedule appointment and with ring tone to remind me. However, I have just transferred my phone number to this new toy yesterday, and it stopped working the same nite even after having charged for one whole nite.

I bought it from amazon.com for free, but i could not find any customer contact number on its web site to speed up the return/replacement process.

Now I need to wait 5 days for the old number being transferred back to my old phone. I am a licensed massage therapist, I depend largely on mobile phone to keep in touch with my clients. You can imagine the inconvenience and potential loss due to this piece of unreliable device. Maybe it is the price to pay for getting something free!

By the way, my personal experience from the phone service activation, the AT&T wireless service is the one that you should keep away from at all cost.

35 Why Blackberry when you can Nokia 6820?
This phone can do it all! You can check your home, corporate, & M-mode e-mail. The bluetooth connectivity is incredible. The camera isn't exactly a megapixel, but who cares? This is a cell phone. Wireless internet is truly high speed if you have EDGE capability. It isn't as fast as DSL, but it certainly beats dialup.

The best feature is the full qwerty keyboard. It takes a little time to get used to, but after a few minutes you will wonder how you got along without it. It is so easy to check and reply to e-mail messages that it almost makes the Blackberry obsolete. The only thing that a Blackberry has is the push e-mail. If you don't need the message immediately go with this phone. It certainly puts all others to shame. Nokia certainly put some time and effort into this phone. All I can say is that they did it all right.

36 Everything I Need
This phone, an upgrade from my Nokia 6800, has everything the 6800 was lacking: Bluetooth, better web browser, smarter interface, and a camera. The key difference between the 6800 and the 6820 is that the 6800 has an FM radio where the 6820 has the camera. Also, the 6820 is smaller & lighter than the 6800. My favorite feature is still the full QWERTY keyboard; I'll never go back to the old triple-tap keys for text again.

This phone is the perfect bridge between a regular mobile phone, and a PDA/PDA phone. Helpful "get organized" features consist of a calendar, note pad, voice recorder, alarm clock, wallet, and to-do list. You have great flexibility in choosing which features to assign to a quick "go to" button, and the items can include features, profiles, and even web site addresses.

Overall, I am 100% satisfied with this phone and feel that it is well worth the price. If you are a PC user, you can use the Nokia PC suite application to sync your computer & phone. If you are a Mac user (like me), the 6820 is not yet supported by iSync. However, you can transmit files via Bluetooth and can send Address Book cards to the phone, also via Bluetooth.

37 Amazing phone ......
Everything's top of the line ... bluetooth, excellent speakerphone, great reception, in built camera and a flip out keyboard. One thing that sticks out like a sore thumb is lack of 65K colors, which makes the pictures taken by the camera and the background images pretty dull compared to a Motorola V600, which has all the above mentioned qualities as well and a great color screen.

39 best of all phone and i wish i had the phone with a service
you could do every thing with this phone ex text message/internet access/degital camera/speakerphone .
40 What can't it do?
I've had it for two weeks, it's pretty cool. Bluetooth, fold out keyboard, camera, voice dialing, syncs with the PC, works as a wireless modem. People are jealous of the keyboard.... Reception is fine, voice quality is good, battery life is good. Nokia's PC Suite software gets better with every revision. Yes, fip phones are all the rage, but you still have to triple tap the keys too much when you text people. I suggest you go see this phone, it certainly was a must-have for me....
41 Best Interface Available, Speedy EDGE Performance
Like Nokia's model 6800, the 6820 provides a full QWERTY keyboard in a foldout design. This affords a typing speed that greatly exceeds that of other phones and mobile devices. Unlike the 6800, the 6820 uses ATT Wireless's speedy EDGE network that will allow efficient use of this superior interface.

(For more information on the foldout, compact QWERTY keyboard, please read my review of the 6800. In my opinion, the design is superior to anything else on the market, including Blackberry and Treo.)

As an owner of Nokia's 6800, the similarly designed predecessor to the 6820, I was enthusiastically waiting for ATTWS/Nokia to provide an EDGE compatible phone with a similar interface. Prior to the 6820, the only other EDGE compliant offering was the uninspiring 6200. For those unfamiliar with wireless data networks, EDGE represents a incremental upgrade for carriers that provides double the performance over GPRS data rates.

While far from true 3G performance, EDGE provides bandwidth exceeding that of dial-up (claimed up to 130 kbps). This allows users to experience performance 2x faster than GRPS, which, unfortunately, fluctuates substantially more than voice performance. Third party tests of the ATTWS EDGE network also show fluctuations of 150%, depending on geography and distance to the cell tower. My initial, albeit unscientific, tests show that data network accessed via the 6820 is noticeably faster with a reduced latency when compared to the 6800.

There are four major improvements in the 6820 over the 6800: 1) EDGE 2) Camera 3) Bluetooth 4) enhanced joystick. Another change, which I don't like but may be considered an improvement by some users, is a size reduction of roughly 15%.
The smaller form factor and screen is not helpful in my opinion. For example, ATTWS has recently released a traffic congestion map in a partnership with Mobil. The map is barely readable on the 6800. The smaller screen reduces the utility of these new services.

The enhanced joystick now allows users to depress (five way instead of four) to select items. There are also some additional buttons to improve navigation. Clearly, the interface is designed to maximize the use of high-speed wireless data where the user may need to send/receive quick bits information such as stock quotes or sending a last minute email.

If aesthetics are important to you, the flashy design of metallic blue and silver body may not be appealing. Likewise, cosmetic lights on the main keyboard may be undesirable.

Being an early adopter who experienced many problems with ATTWS's rollout of GSM/GRPS, I am concerned about ATTWS's ability to support a new network from a customer service perspective. When there is a technical problem with data performance or functions like email, customer service is seldom helpful. Similarly, the ATT Wireless store staff's understanding usually lags the technology by several months.

In summary, the Nokia 6820 could be the first phone in US that can truly function as a robust, fully mobile data entry and retrieval device. If it were a bit larger and less flashy, it would nearly be ideal.

Camera
Bluetooth

Con's
Smaller Keyboard (than 6800)
