One of the world's smallest, lightest 140mm zoom cameras, the Stylus Zoom 140 QD enhances photographic performance without sacrificing portability. The fully automatic operation includes quartz dating, autofocus, autoexposure, and auto loading and rewinding. The multi-autofocus system ensures focus accuracy even when your main subject isn't in the center of the frame. Its clamshell barrier design provides worry-free protection against the elements.
One of its best features is the variable-power flash for natural color tones. The red-eye reduction flash mode emits a series of pre-flashes right before the shutter snaps, allowing the subject's eyes to adjust to the light level of the flash, which reduces the red-eye effect. Night scene flash mode automatically lowers the shutter speed to ensure that both foreground and background are properly illuminated for night scenes. Fill-in flash mode softens the sharp contrasts for a more natural look in photos where your subject is in both bright light and dark shadow. Flash-off mode is available when flash photography is not permitted, or for special moody effects using available light.
Other features include macro close-ups from as near as 24 inches (wide-angle) and 35 inches (telephoto), and a self-timer. All this makes it easy to just relax and take the picture.
1 Worst camera I've owned - - I threw my money away
In July 2004, just a month after I got the 140 QD CG camera, it started jamming when I'd extend the zoom lens. Made a series of horrid clicking sounds when I'd extend it, or try to pull it back in. Put in fresh battery (again), tried again - - jammed up, wouldn't rewind the film at the end of a roll, lost all photos. Boxed it up, sent it back to Olympus at my expense, and received it back about 3 weeks later, with a xeroxed piece of paper - - no letter of explanation as to repair or problem - - just a schematic of the film case, yellow-highlighted, and all I could gather from this lack of information was they were trying to tell me I was loading the film incorrectly. That would make the zoom lens and lens cover jam and click and take out-of-focus photos? I think not. So, back from the factory, I proceeded to try again, and the camera worked for about a month - - by December same problems were back - - several rolls of film later, photos still coming back out of focus, zoom lens jamming, lens cover jamming. Haven't decided yet whether to return it to Olympus and tell them they've lost me as a customer, or throw it off the highest cliff. Don't waste your money on this product. It was disappointing to find out that Olympus doesn't seem to care about communicating or making things right. This was my first and last Olympus product, even though I'd heard great things about their stuff.
2 Wonderful! Simple to use, great photos.
The two most important features to me are the quality of the photos a camera takes (with and w/out the zoom), and how quickly the picture is taken when you press the shutter and quick speed between photos. This camera delivers both those features.
I had an Olympus Stylus for years, then a year ago thought I should get a new autofocus camera and read snappy advertising by Nikon about their special glass lens technology for incredibly sharp pictures blah blah blah. I was sold. That camera took terrible fuzzy or grainy photos with the zoom, and not that great without the zoom lens. And the worst part was the wait time between photos with and without the flash. We'd press the shutter also, and there would be a few second delay before the photo was taken. By then all the kids had moved and we had to set everybody up all over again. Do not buy a Nikon lite touch.
I love the Olympus. We've taken it to the ocean and snapped four rolls of film. Every photo was sharp, colorful, and good quality. I cannot tell you how releived we were when we got the photos. Olympus makes a great product at a great price without a lot of pomp and circumstance.
3 Very Good Camera
It doesn't suck. I cannot believe some of the negative comments about this camera. I've had one for a while and it's always taken great pictures. The only problems that I've had is when the people at Eckerd screw up the processing (but they have ALWAYS reprinted at NO COST) to correct the problems. For a point and shoot, it does a great job of focusing. 1 last thing, use Fuji film. I have always had better results with it than Kodak.
4 Too bad it didn't last!
I bought this camera about 2 1/2 years ago. I was very satisfied with the picture quality under a variety of conditions. Unfortunately, a couple of weeks ago it quit focusing. As it turns out for this type of camera all photo repair shops send the unit in to Olympus to have it repaired. If you want you can send it to Olympus directly yourself. The problem is that regardless of the problem, the repair is a flat rate ... which is rapidly approaching the cost of just buying a replacement camera. Disappointing...
5 Excellent!
I think it is great! It is the kind of camera I've always wanted. Very light, compact and easy to use. The images are perfect!! The zoom function is perfect and it is NOT noisy at all. I am very pleased with my purchase. Thanks, www.Amazon.com for the good recommendation!
6 Love this camera!!
I had an Olympus Stylus Zoom 80 for a few years, but I decided I wanted a longer zoom. I shopped around and came to the conclusion that I wanted to stick with the Olympus Stylus series, not only for the price, but because I knew for a fact how great the pictures would turn out and how easy it was to operate! I have had the Olympus Stylus 140 for about 1 year and absolutely love it. It takes awesome, CRYSTAL CLEAR pictures - and it's a point-and-shoot! It's design is sleek and light-weight, the viewfinder is accurate, and the film rewinds pretty quick (good when changing rolls to catch all the action!) It's also very quiet (which is great for the times you're at a wedding or some other event where people might get irritated with outside distractions). I just honestly love everything about it...most of all the resulting pictures, which is really the most important thing! When people see the photographs that I have taken and tell me they have never seen such amazing photos, I proudly tell them what kind of camera I have (and I do consider myself an amatuer)!! I would highly recommend this camera to anyone. You will NOT be disappointed with your purchase!!
7 Great for a Classroom!
I have used this camera for several years in primary and kindergarten classrooms. It is perfect! Really gets great shots as it allows you to zoom in on kids' interactions without making them feel uncomfortable with a camera in their faces. It is easy to use and fits my hand comfortably. Do carry an extra battery so you don't get stuck in the middle of the field-trip- of-the-year without POWER!
8 Good zoom bad mechanics
A large zoom range. Most others don't go as high as 140 for the price. I did not shoot photos with it because I was put off by the noise of the zoom lens. The camera was not as small or balanced as I had hoped. Plus the zoom is not continuous. It jumps to preset settings.
9 Don't Leave Home Without It
The Olympus Stylus Zoom 140 is a good buy for people looking for
an easy to use compact 35mm camera that is small, lightweight, and
capable of taking good quality photos. The range of the telephoto
zoom(80-140) is capable of handling most picture requirements.
The camera also offers additional functions such as flash, with
red-eye reduction, flash for fill, and a self-timer. The camera
is listed as "weather-resistant." When not in use, the Stylus 140
Zoom's sliding compartent cover protects the lens and makes the
camera suitable for transporting in a pocket, purse, etc.
10 If you get a black stripe in your prints....
... just open the back of the camera and put the little, black plastic doohickey back in it's place. my european vacation prints were ruined cuz you don't know this has happened till you print them out. clerk at photo store said this happens with other cameras too. no need to ship camera and pay bucks to fix this.
11 Reeeally nice!
I got this camera to use on the fly when a larger camera would be too cumbersome; to the beach etc. and I have found it to be really good. I have owned many cameras, some of them point and shoot, and this one is the best one I have had. The pictures really are very sharp and well-balanced, and the zoom is unbelievable in such a little fellow! Also, the film is always in place, you don't have to worry about coming home from safari with 36 to-die-for pictures of rare wildlife...only not, because the film wasn't put in properly (this actually happened to me once, on safari).
The only slight annoyance, and it is very slight, is that you have to half-close the cover in order to activate the retraction of lens etc. then wait until it is safely in place, and THEN close the cover fully. After a while this is second nature and I only mention it so nobody thinks I was paid for this review.
All in all, this camera far surpassed my expectations and I highly recommend it.

12 Great Camera.
Very Good camera, best camera i've had yet. Everything about this camera is FANTASTIC!
13 A Poor Showing By Olympus
Disappointment is the best word to use in describing this camera. It has nice features with the zoom, self-timer, red-eye reduction, etc., but in the end cameras need to take good photographs and this one doesn't. I found the picture quality to be quite poor-- the colors are dull, not vibrant, especially when taking outdoor shots. The zoom lens also is a bit too much-- when you go to 140, the picture tends to blur. And I should add that the camera shutter speed is slow so you better have steady hands if you buy this one.
This camera was a major shock to me. I purchased an Olympus SR70 (I think that's the model) back in 1991 and I never had a problem with it. Plus it took fantastic shots. After 11 years, it still takes better pictures than the Stylus Zoom.
14 Amazon survivor!!
From May to June I went to the Peruvian Amazon for a course. I decided to buy the Olympus Stylus Zoom 140 camera, because it was for all weather and I heard that the zoom was good. The Amazon is a very hot and humid place, so be prepared! The interesting part of this is that the camera actually fell in the Amazon river, and it dived in it's case. The boat turned back to rescue it, and it was recovered working as new. Since that my camera has been working perfectly. That camera is really weather resistant and it is an Amazon survivor!! The only thing I don't like about it is that some objects are hard to focus when you get too close, but I am still very hapy with it.
15 CAMERA
CAMERA WAS EVERYTHING THEY SAID IT WOULD BE. ARRIVED ON TIME.GREAT DEAL FOR THE MONEY.
16 Great camera but...
After comparing our previous camera to our digital it became clear our 35mm needed help. So we focused solely on picture quality with our Olympus Zoom140 camera. The pictures turned out very clear, and the zoom is one of the easiest and most accurate I've seen. I have only two complaints. First, the price is a little high. And second, it doesn't do very well reducing red eye.
17 Unreliable
I bought my Olympus in August 1999. A year and 8 days later, the slide cover jammed rendering the camera unusable. My camera shop sent the camera back to Olympus for repair and it was fixed for $120. Olympus noted that the one year warranty was barely expired but made no accomodation. One year later, in August 2001, my camera jammed again in the same way. I returned to the camera shop and explained my predicament and displeasure and they sent the camera to Olympus who responded with an estimate for $112. Who needs a camera that costs $100 plus every year beyond the initial cost. Not to mention being caught on vacation without a camera.
Beyond the repair issue, I found the picture quality to be mediocre; worse than the Nikon that was my previous camera or the Olympus's that I owned before that.
18 Great quality product
I first bought this camera for a holiday where I didn't want to carry my bag of camera, lenses, and box of tricks.
I find it very hard to go back after using this gem. It's ergonomics are very good. The metering has been almost faultless. I have shot many rolls of slide film, which requires much more accurate exposure, and they have come out well every time.
So when the camera was stolen, I had no hesitation in ordering another one. I also ordered the extended zoom 170 for my wife, as that had just come out.
After trying both, I prefer the 140 zoom. The 170's zoom is a little jumpy, and you can't always get the exact zoom length you want. The 140 zooms much more smoothly.
As for build quality, I certainly can't complain. I recently accidently dropped the 140 from about 3 feet onto a concrete sidewalk. It scratched the camera's plastic case, but the camera was unphased, and continues to perform perfectly.
If you want a versatile, great quality, good value compact camera, I can't recommend this camera highly enough.
19 Review after ST. LUCIA vacation
Disappointing picture quality. Grainy, dull colors compared to my previous Minolta camera that I have had for several years but is starting to break down (my fault). Not worth the money. Close ups were clearer. Not good with distant, scenic shots.
20 Great small camera
I have an Cannon EOS for times when I am serious. When I am traveling or am limited on space, I use this camera. It works great!
21 Nice quality pics, very good ergodynamics
I own a Nikon N6006 SLR and set out to buy a point-and-shoot for convenience. I bought both a Minox CD 140 and an Olympus Stylus Zoom 140 QD. I shot a roll of film with all three at once, then blinded sorted the the match sets of three pictures of each image based on which were best. My findings:
1. The Nikon SLR was not consistently the best. In fact, the difference between the pictures from the SLR and the two point and shoots was remarkably smaller than I expected.
2. The Minox had somewhat better color, focusing, and contrast than did the Olympus. The difference, however, was slight.
3. The Olmpus was better designed than the Minox. The Olympus fit better in the hand, the clamshell cover gave more protection, it had a greater zoom range, the viewfinder was slightly larger and set back from the camera body (so your nose doesn't bump the camera as much), and the diopter adjustment was nice. On the plus side for the Minox, the placement of the Minox zoom buttons was more comfortable for me than than the Olympus ones, and the Minox turned on and off markedly faster than the Olympus. Also, the Minox case was more practical.
Both point and shoot cameras would be excellent options. Get the Minox if picture quality is paramount; get the Olympus if you want more features and better comfort in your hands.
22 Great Camera!
I bought this camera a couple of weeks ago and used it for the first time at Disneyland. I'm thrilled with the results.
Film: I used 800 Dx film (the type I always use)--1 roll of Fuji; 1 roll of Kodak. Both rolls came out great.
About Me: I am an amateur camera user, not a professional. I have always used point-and-shoot type cameras for vacations, special occassions, etc.
Convenience: The camera easily fits inside a fanny pack, along with a small wallet, comb, sunglasses and an extra roll of film. At only 9 oz, it is almost feather-light. The buttons are easy to use; you don't need a pencil or other pointed object to press them.
Lighting Conditions/Features Tested: I tested all of the camera's features (except the timer) in a variety of conditions--through the windows of the Monorail both while stopped and moving, inside rides with the flash off, in bright sun, in the shadows and shade of Tom Sawyer's Island, etc. Splash Mountain proved an excellent place to test the camera's splash resistance.
Photo Quality: Nothing seemed to fool this camera. All of the pictures came out crisp, sharp and clear with exceptional color, at all levels of zoom. People pictures came out unusually well with very true skin color.
Windows: I am particularly pleased with the camera's ability to shoot through windows. It does not have a "landscape" or "infinity" mode, nor does it seem to need one. The camera consistently focused on objects beyond the glass, and pictures came back without glare.
Flash Off Feature: Unlike other cameras that require you to activate the flash off feature each time (each shot) you want to use it, the Olympus Zoom 140 flash-off remains activated until you either switch to another mode or turn the camera off. In places where flash is not permitted, this allows you to take numerous photos without having to press the flash-off button each time.
Viewfinder: Like many point-and-shoot cameras, the viewfinder is slightly above and to the right of the lens. But unlike other cameras I considered, the Olympus viewfinder has guides that help you allow for that...and prevent "chopped off heads" in pictures. The adjustable diopter is also very easy to use. It works beautifully except when the camera is zoomed all the way to 140, at which point it is slightly blurry. (But the pictures still come out great!)
Zoom: The zoom is extremely easy to use and allows you to zoom to any point within the range. There are no preset zoom stops.
Minor Criticism: My only slight criticism of this camera is that the window that displays the number of exposures and the flash mode is not lighted. But that can easily be overcome by carrying a penlight so that you can read the display in dim environments.
Summary: This camera produces excellent pictures, is very easy to use, and is well worth the price. It has definitely exceeded my expectations.
23 Sharp pics, great features
Strengths: Versatile camera, Great range with zoom, Produces sharp photos, Lightweight, Perfect for traveling, Somewhat weatherproof
Weaknesses: Feels a little fragile in your hand; be careful with it! (As with most electronics goods though.)
Summary: This is a great versatile camera. I found it to be the pefect travel companion for me recently, and it produced great results that amazed me for a point-and-shoot camera. I love the wide range it covers, and it's lightweight enough to fit easily in your jacket pocket. And, if that weren't enough, it's near weatherproof! Definitely a serious point-and-shoot for the not-so-serious photographer. :)
24 Buyer Beware
I bought this camera as a back-up for my SLR camera. First, this camera is not very compact. Second, the flap that slides over the lens when the camera is not on, seems very cheap and does not look like it would hold up to wear and tear. Also, the zoom lever on top of the camera is not user friendly. It is very small and it too looks as though it would not stand up to wear and tear. Another bad point is that the lever to open the camera back is hard to use. The most important thing is that when I had the camera set to use the red-eye reducer, ALL of the pictures came back with red-eye. It DOES NOT WORK. I have studied photography and am not a casual photographer. In my opinion, this camera is not worth the ... it costs. I promptly returned mine.
25 impact resistant
i went skiing recently with the camera around my neck, caught an edge and did a face plant, sliding on my chest down the ravine, into the bushes. When i finally crawled out, i checked my camera which was covered in snow, even though the cover was closed, but the pictures came out fine and the camera works great. a little condensation on the lenses.
26 Great quality if you don't want to lug around an SLR
The only cameras I've used was a 110 when I was a kid and a Canon AE1 for the last 15+ years. It got tedious to drag around the Canon and I wanted something compact with long zoom capabilities. I didn't want to go digital just yet and I had no interest in an APS. I narrowed my search down to the Pentex and the Olympus. The repair/photo store man that I use highly recommended the Pentex (I'm guessing because he sold that and not the Olympus). But after reading the reviews here on Amazon I decided for the Olympus. I've given it some time and I have not been disappointed once. I've used it on short trips and to photograph the craft products I make and the quality looks just like the SLR. I prefer Fuji film which I think is best. Until I can steady my hand, I have not yet tested it for macro. Just remember to get the battery when you purchase it. The Olympus has proven to be a great buy for a great price.
27 I loved my ten year old stylus so much I had to get another.
My old stylus took a lot of abuse. Punk shows, extensive travel, & mishandling and nothing stopped it. I wanted a zoom lens, so I got another. I like the zoom but find the fact that the eye piece goes out of focus annoying and it's awkward to focus the eyepiece for the candid shot. (I am sure I will get over it.) The case is a bit slick...maybe some grip tape would help. Otherwise it's a great camera. The pictures are sensational.
28 Dark Pictures
We bought this camera for the 140-zoom. We're very happy with the zoom and all the easy-to-use features. However, the pictures sometimes come out dark even on bright sunny days. After reading the other reviews, we are either taking pictures at the wrong angle or using the wrong film (400-speed) or using a poor developer. If we figure it out, we'll let you know.
29 An excellent camera well worth the money
The Olympus Stylus Zoom 140 is an easy-to-use and flexible camera. The camera is push-button simple, has an awesome lens, is a small package--not too small so you can't comfortably hold it, like many APS cameras, but small enough to go anywhere--and it is weatherproof. In short, a great camera for trips. The camera feels solid and produces excellent quality images.
I bought this camera as an easy-to-use backup to my 35mm SLR, but this lens and package is so flexible, this has become my first choice for picts . . . plus, it's very easy to carry around....
All in all, a the Stylus Zoom 140 is a worthwhile buy and a good value.
30 Not a let down & didn't let me down!
I bought this camera just before I traveled to Europe. It's always good to check out a new camera before you go on vacation with it, (so you can get to know it and see the results ...nothing worse than coming back from a vacation like that with a bunch of garbage rolls of film as your memories). I was SO happy with the results of the test roll before I left, that I shot another roll "to test" it, and then another... the images are SO sharp and clear! I had VERY FEW pictures that didn't turn out from my entire trip. Good exposures, clear focus... The camera was overall quite adaptable to the various elements a person may come across while on vacation or just out taking pictures at a family event. I've had so much fun taking pictures with it!
Neat that it has several different options for the function of the flash! It has a flash override, two different types of red-eye reduction, a selection for night time outdoor flash, as well as a self timer, and the option to put the date on the pictures/ date and time, or no data at all.
I really don't have any complaints about this camera. But since it's all automatic, make sure to always have an extra battery on hand! Especially when you first get it, because you'll probably use the zoom and stuff a bit more at first. Another thing that I noticed with mine is that the flap that slides over to close the lens and cover/protect it will VERY SLIGHTLY rub along the side of the lens as it is being pulled in if you push too far on the flap. So just be aware so not to mar the finish.
What would make this camera better is if it came with a made to fit case!
31 VERY SHARP PICs
Easy to use. Much better pics than our 1995 Pentax IQ120. We've put through 1 roll and are very satisfied. It is showing subject eye clarity that our old camera did not. Really is a decent camera and the price is reasonable... considering the market relatives.
32 This camera is VERY easy to use!
I bought this camera about a month ago, and I'm delighted with the pictures it takes. It's very easy to use, and had several features that other cameras in the same price range didn't offer. For the money, I think it's the best camera that you can buy.
33 Love It!
I have had this camera for 2 years now and wouldn't trade it for anything. We took many pictures while in Ireland and the mist never had an effect on the camera. This was the best investment in a camera that I have made.
34 I had one
I had one. A friend dropped it from a three story roof and it broke. I immediately bought another one. Can't imagine buying any other brand or model (love the 140 zoom).
35 I'm very impressed with my new camera
I must say that I'm extremely happy with my purchase of this Olympus camera. I was originally leaning toward a Kodak SureShot, but the Olympus has all the things I'm looking for and more. The zoom lens is very fast and responsive which allows for quick adjustments when I'm particularly indecisive. It takes very clear and true pictures (even when I'm not seeing too clearly, as my friend's birthday photos from on the town will attest). And yes, I paid a few more bucks than I intended, but the photographic evidence tells me it was a wise decision. I expect to enjoy this camera for years to come!
36 Great pictures, Easy to Use
I bought this as a present for my mom but once I saw the pictures I just kept it.
If you want something easy to use and robust with a pretty good zoom.. this is it.
37 Survives river voyage
This camera is amazing! Not only does it take great photos using any type of film but it is extremely durable. A professional photographer highly recommended this camera which I purchased prior to my once-in-a-lifetime African Adventure. The night of our Zambezi river cruise, my tote bag fell overboard and drifted 200 yards before kindly fishermen saved it. Luckily, this camera was in my zippered compartment so it didn't sink to the bottom like my binoculars. I thought the camera was wasted because the entire body was flooded with river water and the lens was fogged. After opening up the film and battery compartments and letting them air dry in the hot sun, the camera works perfectly. The view lens has bubbled so it's a little difficult to see the subject but the photos are beautiful. This made me a loyal Olympus customer.
38 I only use this camera now
This is my 2nd Stylus. I just wore the other one out after 7 years of almost daily use. I can find no fault with this one and am very pleased with its performance.
