PCS Phone Samsung VI660 (Sprint)

1 2 Cute!!
I have had this phone for about 6 weeks now and I think it's great! The only thing I don't like is that you have to actually flip the phone open to see who's calling. It's small enough to fit in your pocket and you don't even know it's there! This is a nice lil' phone if you are looking for the basics.
2 Good Phone, Worst Company Around
Let me first state that I do not work for any mobile provider and have used them all. Sprint is about the worst company on the face of the planet. Do not under any circumstances support this company in any way. I've reported them to the BBB for their shady practices.
They constantly "lose" payments and when they decide to penalize you its in the middle of the month. They just turn your service off! No warnings, no emails, SMS to your phone or calls. You just try to make a call and it puts you through to 611 collections. I originally purchased a phone from sprint for their DATA service and wanted a voice account as well. The sales person didn't think twice of taking my money and then telling me that they couldn't suport that on my account. Whats worse is they tried to penalize me for early termination!! (They even have a published policy about letting you try their service for 30 days.) When I tried to return the devices they refused to take them back! (After 2 days)
I had to spend a week calling them and forcing my way up the chain to talk to anyone that knew anything. It took reporting them to the BBB and writing letters to the PUC to get them to not charge me the $200 early term fee.
Sprint is by FAR the worst company out there and the PUC/FCC should shut them down for illegal business practices! Please learn from my mistakes! Go to another provider.
3 I gave it a star because there was nothing lower
Sprint is so very evil. Please don't support them. They have horrible customer service, their phones are terrible. The reception stinks, they break easily and sprint will overcharge you. They are the worst company in the whole entire world. They are an evil empire. If I were a giant man with giant nuts, I'd teabag their whole evil empire.
4 IM TOO HAPPY
I HAD VIRGIN MOBILE FOR AWHILE BUT IT WAS TOO EXPENSIVE FOR ME. 25 CENTS A MINUTE FOR THE FIRST 10 MINUTES AND .10 AFTER THAT WITH NO FREE NIGHTS OR WEEKENDS. NO NO I COULD NOT DO THAT ANYMORE. I AM WITH SPRINT. I HAVE 2 MONTHS FREE INTERNET, FREE RINGTONE DOWNLOADS, REAL VOICE RINGTONES (WHICH I LOVE, 1000 ANYTIME MINUTES, UNLIMITED NIGHT (STARTS AT 7 PM) AND WEEKEND MINUTES, GREAT COVERAGE. NO THE PHONE DOES NOT HAVE SOMETHING THAT DISPLAYS WHEN IT CLOSES BUT I KNEW WHAT I WAS GETTING SO IM HAPPY SINCE I HAVE CHOSEN DIFFERENT RINGTONES FOR DIFFERENT PEOPLE I KNOW WHO IS CALLING. GOOD SERVICE SO FAR I LOVE THE PLAN 55.00/MO. NOT BAD AT ALL SO IF U ARE LIKE ME AND U DONT NEED A CAMERA PHONE BUT LOVE THE REAL VOICE RINGTONES, GAMES, AND WALLPAPER THEN YOU SHOULD GET THE PHONE..BUT AFTER U GET THE PHONE TAKE CARE OF IT
5 Good phone, bad service.
I've had this phone for about four months now and I have mixed thoughts about it. Often times when I'm talking, it'll automatically lose signal which is pretty annoying. Also, my phone seems to be roaming in places where other cell-phones that use the Sprint service don't. I actually compared it with other Sprint phones that my friends have and those ones get service easily but it takes a while for mine to find service, and when it does, it's usually roaming. My second biggest problem is that the phone gets hot extremely quickly. Usually after 5 minutes of talking, you can feel it getting warm and that really bothersome and also unsafe. As many others before me have mentioned, the lack of caller-ID on the exterior of the cell-phone is a negative especially when you are at school or at work and someone calls you, it would have been a lot easier to see who it was that called. The number pad is awesome, easy to text message but what good is that when half the time, the message wouldn't get send because there is no service? The battery life is also pretty crappy, I have to charge it every night and I don't talk on it that much so I expected it to last longer than it does right now. The games are all demos but I don't really care, it's not an important feature to me. I've dropped this phone several times (by accident, mind you) and it's still as good as new. I like the simplicity of it, the size is also very nice. I can't even feel it in my pocket when I carry it around. The color screen is very good. The alarm clock is very useful, and the voice dialing feature is awesome and I use it all the time. This Samsung phone itself is pretty nice, but the Sprint service that comes along with it is not. I feel it is NOT worth the price that it is at right now. I got it for free because of some deal but I would never pay $200 dollars for it. Overall, I would give it 3 ? stars.
6 No outside caller-ID :-(
I just got this last weekend and so far am pleased with it. Considering the area I live in it has exceptional reception. It has a lot of nice features, the only problem (as others have mentioned) is the lack of caller-ID on the outside of the phone. I set it so I can flip it open and press any key to answer instead of just flipping it open to answer it. Besides you can have different ringtones for different people in your phone book. I also found a site where I can send ringtones to it for free which is cool. The other problem along with the caller-ID thing is that it seems Sprint has a problem with a ticking sound during calls? I'm not sure if anyone else has experienced this but my friend has Sprint and many times when she called me we could hear a ticking while we were talking, and now I hear it with this phone. It doesn't happen all the time but it's pretty frequent. But you can still carry on a conversation, it's only slightly annoying. 3 and a half stars.
7 best small, inexpensive phone
I have read all the negative reviews for this phone, i own this phone for the last 7 months and never had any problems, only drawback that i see with this phone is lack of external caller ID.
8 nice phone, no special features
I recently purchased this phone and found it to be pretty good. I haven't had any issues with it other than it takes time for the phone to come on. I didn't even realize it had voice command until I read one of the other reviews!! This is a pretty neat feature. I like that it is a pretty basic phone without alot of gadgets to figure out. I really like the blue background it has when turned on, makes it easy to see. I have no regrets about getting the phone (yet!!)
9 Hinge broke in 4 months of use
This phone seems to have a design flaw in the hinge. That would explain all the negative reviews I've seen here and in other forums about poor sound quality, battery charging, etc. that have to do with the connections that go through the hinge. I bought this phone in Sept 2004 and the hinge broke in January 2005. No drops, no scratches, no dents. The phone looks brand new, except for the hinge.

The worst part is that Samsung and Sprint won't acknowledge that this is a design flaw. When they see a broken hinge, they claim it is damage and won't honor the warranty or cancel a contract. You will have a contract with Sprint, but no phone.

Run away from this phone! I have 4 lines on Sprint, all originally on various Samsung phones. My 8500 was great, but subsequent models have gotten weaker and weaker. This 660 is the last straw for me. I'm now on Nokia and Sanyo phones. My last Samsung is converting to a Treo 650 this month. NO MORE SAMSUNG FOR ME! Yea!
10 Samsung V1660
Have had this phone since May, 2004. Like the size but do wish it had the caller ID info on the outside so have to open the phone to see who was calling. The number pad sometimes feels awkward and not so easy to use. Easy to hear parties and clear sound. Enjoy downloading ringers, etc to give lots character to the phone!
11 first phone
Well, I love my new phone. Reception inside my house is great, a nice bunch of options, and to top it all off I got it for free with a special offer sprint was having. Doesn't come equipped with many special things when you first get it, only games are demos, but it does have a small collection of ring tones to choose from, and has a wide selection of tools to make your life a little easier. I am slightly annoyed with the small amount of options for your screensaver but that can be fixed with a couple dollars, and to help Sprint gives you $10 of free downloads for the first month, along with two months of vision (internet) for free, which means that is the time that you should get all your downloads so you don't have to pay for internet time ;). One problem I find is the closeness between the down arrow key and the back button which sometimes makes me accidentally go to the previous screen (mostly annoying for internet and games). Also, Tech Support does get a little annoying but once you find an actual person they do help.

Games include: fox football demo, tetris demo, and bejeweled demo

Tools include: Voice memo, world clock, calculator, countdown (my favorite), etc.

Come standard with: Charger
12 Great phone! Great deal!
Love this phone...and the service is great. Only problem, is getting new faceplates and such. Gotta search around abit.
Other wise...great!
13 Bad phone - avoid and get something better instead
The phone is not bad except for the fact the price does not match the quality. I paid about $170 at Costco for this phone and I am going to bring it back next week because it is simply not worth more than $50.

Here are the cons: 1) No display when phone is shut - which means you WONT be able to tell who is calling you UNTIL you flip open the phone. How stupid is that? That has got to be the stupidest design idea from Samsung yet. I generally love Samsung but what idiotic designer thought of this? 2) Static noise when you are dialing 3) Keypad is very close to other keys next to it so you keep pressing the wrong buttons. 3) Screen is terrible because colors are not very bright and resolution is very low

PROS are the big style buttons. There isnt anything else positive about this phone. I expect Costco to either drop this phone soon or else, continue to sell this crap and keep getting returns on it.
14 great
I got this phone for my birthday and being in northern ontairo the phone is great
15 Worst Phone I have Seen
I had this phone and had lots of problems... First time screen went blue/black, I went to sprint store and as phone wass in warranty period they changed my phone (SAME MODEL) It worked full two weeks then suddenly started dropping calls , if someone calls me it goes directly to my voice mail. SO AGAIN I went to pcs store and they told that that particular phone is not good and they changed my phone... This phone worked for 2 days and then it won't charge. Then this became my routine every morning or evening I visited sprint store.. They kept changing my phone and after 6-7 attempts they changed the model. (I guess because they didn't had any VI660 any more.)

Even someone pays me $ 100 for this phone I won't go for it. Just my experience.
16 CRAZY TEXTS
When I bought this phone I was told it was the best phone out there. Now after 2 months later I am sorry that I even bought it. I have no reception in my house if anyone were to call me,if someone does call and i am in a different area of my house i have to walk around and say "Can you hear me now?" And who wants to do that?I don't for one!!! My last complaint is the texts messages,I thought that was something we are able to do on the phone but when it comes to my phone I get error 38 and I am not even receiving my texts. So I ask why have this phone? I might just think about throwing it away and going to someone else!!!!Unless fixed!!!
17 Great Phone but Horrible Service
The phone is great for me since I am always on the go...But I feel also the worse thing about the phone is the reception and when you text message people you get nothing but pure errors on this phone....Now I enjoy the plan I have but Sprint needs to step up in the services and reception. I love to text message but if its not going to work then there is no need for this crappy phone!
18 Great features but reception has problems
I give this phone two and a half stars. I bought the Samsung 660 b/c I wanted a lightweight phone with no camera (I was told by the Best Buy guys that the camera takes up extra battery life even if you don't use it). I still wanted the Vision capabilities, however, so I could download my own ringers and screensavers. So, this phone seemed to match up with what I wanted, and in features alone it does.

Another Amazon reviewer said that Sprint users have to pay extra for voice dialing--that is incorrect. You access the voice dialing by pressing the left blue button on the square keypad (next to the "OK" button). You can do voice dialing or numeral dialing. It's really cool.

Also, I called Sprint about the downloaded ringtones "expiring" after 3 months, and the rep told me the ringtone only expires in your Download Inbox account. So if you download the song to your Download Inbox and then upload the song onto your phone within 3 months, the song is on the phone permanently.

But I am really annoyed about my reception problems with this phone. My previous phone--a Sanyo 4900--was stolen, so I needed to get a new phone right away. I think I should've stuck with Sanyo b/c I never had the reception problems with Sanyo that I do with Samsung. Nearly every day a call gets dropped, normally when I'm in my apartment. But calls were never dropped in my apartment on my Sanyo! Also, sometimes people call me and their voices sound garbled, like they're under water. I have to move around to a different area in order for their voices to come in clear again or hang up and call the person back. Other times the caller's voice sounds "fuzzy" and I can't understand what the caller is saying.

I wasn't able to find a Sanyo with the clamshell design I wanted *without* a built-in camera, so that's why I went with Samsung. But I think I should've considered the Sanyos more just to have decent reception. Oh well, in eighteen months Sprint told me I'll qualify for another rebate and can upgrade my phone. Sigh.

19 A return to the old 8500
If you remember the old 8500's, then this phone will seem familiar. The A400 and A460 both strayed away from the 8500 design, but this phone is a welcome return to the simplicity that made the 8500 such a hit.

This phone is nothing special. It doesn't have a camera or anything like that. It comes with a lot of ringers and such, but anything you download, you pay for usually on a 3 month basis. It's not worth it.
There is no front display but you adapt quickly. As is the case with all Samsung flip phones, it gets hot and the battery doesn't last long. If you charge every night and don't talk a lot, this will never be a problem. As far as heat, it's nothing unusual. The service is fine. I've had no problems.
The voice memo is back. That's extremely useful once you get the hang of it. The alarm clock is far more functional. But the thing I like the most on this phone is the voice dial. It is far more functional than the crude voice dialing on the 8500 and the spiffed up voice dialing on the A460. The voice dial is a feature of the PHONE and is not the Sprint Voice Command service.

My only real gripe with the phone is that the phone book is so feature rich that it's not easy to use. It's easier for me to voice dial someone than navigate my phone book. Another gripe is that phone calls sound somewhat tinny, like the other person is standing in a big empty room. I noticed this on the first day, but quickly grew used to it.

Pros:
1. Better, functional voice dialing.
2. slim design
3. Voice memo is back, lots of features
4. Plenty of downloadables if you're into that.
5. Launch pad buttons are programmable!

Cons:
1. Over featured phone book
2. No front display!
3. Typical short battery life with all Samsung flips
4. tinny, hollow sound during phone calls

Undocumented features:
1. Menu button pages down lists, and the volume up and down also pages up and down through lists.
2. During a call, if you hold down the "back" key, the time and date will pop up on screen.
3. The center button of the launch pad pressed without holding down is the same as the OK button.

Overall, if you're just looking for a decent cell phone, this will do. If you want features and options and a camera and other frills, buy another phone. This phone will mainly appeal to people who remember the old 8500's and people who don't want a fancy phone, but don't want a piece of garbage either.

20 Good Basic Phone; Just What I Wanted!
(...). This is a great phone for the price. I am a long time Sprint PCS customer and had to re-up for 2 more years. The jury is still out on the battery life. This phone does not seem to pull in the PCS signal too well (Only 1 bar, when my year-old Sanyo 6400 got 4-5.), but voice quality is OK. The case is a little slick, so you have to be careful not to drop it. One thing I discovered, that has not been reported anywhere else, is that there is no built-in game to play. Oh well, I guess you get what you pay for. I am not about to buy the game pad since I am an old geezer, but it would have been nice to have some type of game to play if I got caught in a blizzard, or while waiting by the mailbox for my rebate. I was disappointed that the phone did not came with an earbud, or a carrying strap. Again, you get what you pay for--no more or no less!!!
21 Phone gets VERY HOT !
I got this phone on July 2, 2004. I charged the battery and after two days of not using the phone, the battery was dead. I recharged the battery several times and the it keeps dying even though I don't use it.

I went back to COSTCO and I was given a new battery. The phone gets EXTREMELY HOT! If I call my mom and am on the phone for 20 minutes, it is UNCONFORTABLY HOT and am unable to continue conversing.

My guess is that this phone is good for emergency calls but not as your only phone. Furthermore, the guy at COSTCO told me that the phone is not designed for long periods of talk time. I asked what was the phone for?

Anyway, am going back next week and have them exchange it for another one. If that one gets hot too, then I may just consider cancelling my contract and getting my money back. I have never had a cell phone that got so uncomfortably Hot.

22 My phone
I got this phone the beginning of March. I've been talking to Sprint about once a month or more trying to get problems fixed. The phone said I was in roam, and I wasn't. It doesn't always like to ring when people call me. I also do not get good signal. I think those problems are not because of this phone though. I think it is more a problem with the company because that is why I got a new phone, and I'm still having the problems. The only real problem I have with this specific phone is that the ringer is quiet. The other thing I don't like is that the games that come on the phone are demo games and only have level 1 then asks if you want to buy the whole version.
23 I can't believe this company still exists.
My experience with Sprint PCS goes back about 4 yrs. I activated my phone after it was out of service for a few months. After activation it never was able to connect up to the PCS service (i.e. I couldn't make a call out... it was unusable). I contacted Sprint again and I was told that the phone must have gone bad and to take it to a Sprint authorized repair shop which I did. I was told there that the cost of the repair would exceed the cost of simply buying a new phone so I contacted Sprint to cancel my service. Then they told me that to cancel I had to pay a $65 cancellation fee!!! I had never had any use on the contract that they activated!!!

I tried contacting Sprint repeatedly and asking to speak to a manager and each time I was on hold for about an hour and then told to call back later because the manager wasn't in! After weeks of this I did get the amount off of my bill but the whole event had already taken it's toll.

I recently decided to give Sprint another chance with the VI660. I started the service about 2 months ago and have never recieved a bill from them, however, during the past two weeks I've gotten about 4-5 messages on my answering machine to pay up or else! During this time I contacted them and told them that I had not recieved a bill, they updated my info (that really was no different than before), and said I would recieve a bill in about a week that NEVER ARRIVED!!! On top of that I've recieved more phone calls from Sprint to pay up!!!

About a week ago I cancelled my service with Sprint yet again, and took the now $150 cancallation fee. Certainly better than two years of hassling from Sprint.

The phone itself is nicely made by Samsung but I would only recommend Sprint service to somebody that I REALLY didn't like. On top of that, I almost NEVER got a decent signal through Sprint. Even while talking to customer service I had to have them repeat what they said several times!!! Come on!!!

Sprint, the end is near.

24 Sprint- Bad Service
Buyer beware... do not buy Sprint. I give them zero stars! I purchased a Treo 600 for metro Atlanta. Basically the service was very bad. I called to cancelled and charged me $112 and change. As a business customer or any customer why am I being changed for poor service. I am not going to speak bad about their customer service because they tried. But they do not understand about business relationships and how to assist the customer. If you intend to buy a phone from them get the least expensive plan first. Then will not loose as much monsy as I did for just 7 days of service.
25 Great phone for cheap w/service.
I was at the end of my rope with T-Mobile. I know everyone seems to have their own horror stories with various carriers, but T-Mobile had really ticked me off.

So, I was in the market for my THIRD cell phone in a year. I was most unhappy with my first two phones (a motorola C223 & a samsung R225), the samsung was decent enough, but it seemed to be ancient by the time the new year rolled around. I decided to get service with Sprint, and noticed this phone was about $30 after rebates. It didn't have a camera, but frankly, if I want to take pictures, that's why I have a digital camera.

I got the phone, and the only thing that cheesed me was that it didn't come with a hands-free set (my first two phones both came with one). Other than that, the phone is exactly as described. I've had it about 4 months now, and no problems whatsoever. The reception isn't the best, but it's certianly nothing to complain about.

There are several small things I dislike about this phone. The retractable antennae is very delicate, and i've already almost broken it off. They probably have billions of these lying around, and will charge you 10 bucks to replace it. Also, it's a flip phone, and when it's closed and ringing there's no way to tell who it is. A LCD on the outside (like most flip phones have) would've been nice to display the time, or even the phone number. The number buttons are pretty small, but I am a big guy, and I seem to have this problem with each phone I buy.

The Samsung 660 is a solid phone, I've dropped it several times, and though it has some small exterior scratches, it's a much tougher phone than other models I've used.

The battery life is very good. I've brought this on trips, and as long as I keep my usage to a minimum (2-3 calls a day 4-10 minutes a piece), the battery will last 2-3 days on a single charge. I've found when I talk for 2-3 hours a day, the battery will need charging at the end of the night.

Overall, I would highly reccommend this phone to someone. It's a basic no-frills phone with no bells & whistles, just consistant good call quality and long battery longevity.

26 Three lemons in a row? QC problems with this one ...
I am currently in the process of boxing up my third A660/VI660 phone from Sprint to return it to the store. The first one lasted four days, the second two and this one a whopping two days as well before the phone refused to function on battery power and would function on A/C power only. The batteries checked out fine in my tester, but the phone would not power up. Even putting a reference voltage at the battery terminals would not make the phone power up on any of the three phones. I also ensured that when I received the new phones I recieved them out of different batches (not just the 20 box packages they get in at the store, but they were manufactured on different days, weeks apart). Three in a row indicate some serious QC problems or possibly an underengineered phone dying of some enviromental hazard, although there is nothing that could be considered that unusual about any place where I go.

I recomend that you do not purchase this phone, and if you require a non-camera phone, you do not go with Sprint PCS service, this being their only non-camera phone at the present time.

27 sprint phone and service
The phone is good. Sprints service is okay. It's the only cell service I've had. It basically picks up where ever I am with only intermittent roaming in buildings and in mountanous areas. The thing is with Sprint, the nicer the phone, the nicer the reception. Every extra thing is an extra 5.00. We have 2 phones on my plan 55.00 for 700.00 anytime, unlimited night and weekend and starts at 7:00pm for anytime. It's an extra 20.00 for my phone. I got this service when my daughter started driving, 3 yrs ago. Anyway I go my phone bill is always 100.00 mo for both phones either due to roaming or something else. PS you can get 50 mins of roaming a month for 5.00. Only thing with sprint, no grace period for paying. If the bill is due on the 24th and not paid by the 30th, they will turn the phone off.
28 High on basic features-Call quality Terrible
This the 5th Samsung I have owned after having the phone replaced 4 times in the past month. My previous samsung 8500 worked great, so after 5 years with the same phone, I thought I would upgrade. The phone is feature rich, Buy it if you don't mind having your call reception break-up. Dial out and listen to the static and crackle as it rings. Everyone of the Samsung 660s do it. Sprint will tell you this is normal, even though it does not happen on other Samsung models or other brands. This is a manufacturing quality issue, cheap components to offset rich phone features. Ford motors claimed the "Pinto" was fine, until enough people died in car crashes. Firestone claimed there was not a problem with their tires. If you don't care about call quality and just want a color screen, you can't beat this phone.
29 Great Entry Level Phone
I bought this phone in December '03 to replace an aging Sanyo phone that had Sprint service. For the price this phone is great, I wasn't interested in getting a phone with a camera because I have a digital camera that is normally with me that I would rather use that a low-quality mobile phone camera. The voice activation works great, there is absolutely no programming and it is built right into the phone there is no additional charges from Sprint to use it. Battery life is fairly good, especially since I work in an area that fades back and forth from digital to analog coverage. Overall, very easy to navigate and setup.
30 A great little phone for the price
I agree with most of the other reviewers here - the Samsung vi660 is a great little phone. I finally upgraded from my beloved but old Samsung SCH-8500, and so far I'm pretty happy with its replacement. Some features I like that haven't really been mentioned on the site to date:

1) When you're charging up the battery, at 90% charge the outside LED light turns from red to green. This may not seem like a big deal, but overcharging the battery over time will eventually ruin its capacity to hold a charge. It makes it easier to see when to unplug it, and hopefully save on battery wear.

2) You can customize the function of the 4 navigation buttons just above the keypad, so with one keystroke you can display the phone book, calendar, calculator (i love this feature!), or even turn on voice dialing.

3) The voice dialing on the phone is nifty. You don't have to 'train' it to recognize your voice. Once voice dialing is activated, you can just tell it to dial by name, by number, or by digit and speak your commands into the phone. If you can never remember your cell number, say "my phone number" and the phone will read it back to you.

4) The phone has ringer volume settings that include vibrate, but it also includes a great vibrate&high volume combination, so whether you're wearing it in a noisy room or its laying on a table in a quiet one, you'll know its ringing.

5) When entering a phone number, the display turns white and shows extra-large digits until the whole phone number is entered, making it easier to see if you've misdialed.

5)When entering to-do items into calendar, memo pad, or task list, the phone automatically starts off in T9 mode (the word-recognition software that lets you enter words by only hitting each button one time).

Just like my old 8500, the Vi660 has a lot of ergonomic little features that make this phone a pleasure to use. It packs a powerhouse of advanced features as well, including the ability to lock the phone and hide the display of certain phone numbers for security. My only big complaint about this phone is that Sprint gives you a user's manual that is 10% user's manual and 90% about touting its PCS Vision services. If you REALLY want to know how to use every little feature, youre going to have to download the PDF file of the manual off their website. All in all, though, I'd say it was a great little phone.

31 Typically Samsung: Astounding
This is the 4th Samsung I've owned and I must say that the company continues to amaze me. While this may be a lower-end model compared to what else is out (camera and video phones), it is packed with features that make it a pleasurable phone to use and I would recommend it to anyone. The operating system is far improved from the SPH-500 I had before this, but I still don't know why a "camera menu" is an option. I can only remember one dropped call - the first day I had it. Regarding Sprint's service levels, I have always been satisfied with them. Although a typical wait time is 5 minutes when calling, their friendliness and prompt resolution makes up for it. As for downloads, so what if Sprint charges? There are plenty of other sites out there that allow you to download material for free or at a fraction of the cost. Myphonefiles.com offers unlimited downloads for $3 a month or $29 a year. Overall, I am totally satisfied with the Samsung VI660 and its capabilities.
32 OMG I LOVE THIS PHONE!!!! (its like ma 2nd boyfriend he he)
Sprint u are amazing! I got added onto ma daddy's plan and with that i got 2 free months of internet and anytime mintues! so my boyfriend is really happy about that because i get to instant message him while im at school and talk to him when i get home! but it'll only be for two glorious months i hope they go REALLY slow! i love this samsung! i've been wanting a new phone since like last july since i got bored with ma virgin mobile phone (which is really total bore! 33 Great Phone For The Price!
I bought this phone for my daughter, and it was very inexpensive with a 2-year contract. Knowing that, we didn't expect it to do much more than her now year-old Kyocera does. I was so surprised to see all the great features it does have! Voice-activated dialing, color screen, very convenient small size, text-messaging capabilites, monthly scheduler/calendar with alerts, calculator, downloadable ringtones, screen savers, games, applications, and so much more! Around here, it does get fairly good reception, although there are times calls may sound quiet or a little fuzzy. This problem usually only lasts a few seconds at most, and we've never dropped a call. Probably the worst thing about this phone is its short battery life. Still, she uses the phone all day and just recharges at night while she's sleeping, and that seems to be fine. Overall, this phone is a great deal with a lot of special extras you can enjoy! Have fun!
34 It works great, but why do they keep trying to rip me off?
I've never owned a cell phone before. I finally broke down, and I got a really good plan. All in all, I really like this phone. But I can't understand how Sprint is allowed to just nickel and dime me to death on this thing!

For instance, lots of people are raving about the amazing voice command feature on this phone. What they aren't telling you is that this is NOT a feature of the phone. It's a service that you have to pay an extra $5 a month for from Sprint.

I got free internet for the first 2 months. I decided to download some fun ringers and screensaver things. Now, this is the part I can't believe is legal (and for all I know all cell phones do this). They charge $2-3 for each ringtone or screensaver or whatever. Now, we're talking about 30 seconds of a song, a song you can download from napster for 99 cents (also a ripoff). But the incredible, hair on fire, insane part is that you don't own it. You RENT it. After 3 months, it "expires."

Can you imagine? You don't ever own it, even though the prices are highway robbery.

Oh, also, if you decide you don't want to pay $15 a month for worthless internet service (trust me...it's like time travel to 1994 waiting for your email to appear), you'd better cancel it quick. Because you can't cancel it immediately. Sprint makes you wait until the next billing cycle. Unless there's 3 or fewer days left. Then you have to wait until the NEXT billing cycle after that.

These are the kind of things that consumer protection laws are written for. For all the RIAA's bluster about "intellectual property," I'm wondering why I have to buy songs I already own to use them as ring tones; and I don't get to keep them!

One helpful feature on this phone is a memo recorder. Now, logically, I should be able to just record a song using this recorder to use as a ringtone, right? Wrong. It's impossible.

Don't get me wrong, all in all I like the service. I got free PCS-to-PCS calling, so I can call my girlfriend for free. In general I like the plan. But, like, I downloaded Asteroids yesterday. I could have sworn it said the licence was unlimited. But when it got to my phone, it expires in a month!

On top of that, the game is terrible, worse than the atari 2600 version. I'll admit I haven't tried, but I assume if I call Sprint and tell them I'm not satisfied with it (or the incredibly terrible, compressed, unlistenable version of "Back in Black" I downloaded), they'll tell me too bad.

Which hardly seems fair. I'm forced to buy things sight unseen (they even launched a website just for games where if you're interested in buying something, you click "buy," and it then downloads the price to your phone. There's NO other way to find out the price!!!). I'm sorry, but this is unethical. They're just ripping off teenagers who don't know any better.

I guess I don't get it. Why can't I upload my own songs, pictures, ringtones, games? Why does Sprint have a monopoly on my phone? I bought the phone, isn't it mine?

Anyway, it sounds great, it works great, it's light and I love the screen and the ringtones that are included. I downloaded Tetris and solitaire and they work great. It's so small I can't believe it.

I like it. But I don't like the way Sprint treats my phone like it's actually still theirs.

35 Great for visual impaired user
Bought this phone for my husband a couple of weeks ago. With a couple of tweaks to the menus to allow the phone to come on and use the flip to activate the voice services, it has worked wonderfully. Sales people may not know all the voice activated services since it's not a common information request.

He is visually impaired and can use the voice services to dial by name in the phone directory--it will repeat the name back and then prompt you for which number, home, mobile, work, etc.

It also allows the user to dictate the phone number and then reads it back to you to confirm before dialing. Works like a dream even when the number is spoken rapidly. He hasn't had to manually dial a number since getting this phone.

Only negatives are that the buttons are hard to distinguish by feel, took some practice on which way to click the center pad to get the voice activation prompt before we found the setting to make it prompt by opening the flip. Also, the voice mail button is hard to distinguish from its surrounding buttons.

The voice activated status will also read to you battery and signal strength as well as telling you if you are on the sprint network or roaming. The plug on the charging cord is easy for him to insert, and he likes it better than the desk top charger we had previously for an older flip-style phone.

Haven't figured out a way to get the phone call to end without pressing the "end" button while using a hands-free kit, so he'll have to practice that too, but overall, great features for a visually impaired user. I had to program numbers in for him, but we do that with any new cell phone.

36 Well rounded design, nice UI but only with OK reception
-
I have been a SprintPCS customer for 5 years. Just like many other Sprint customers, I felt Sprint's coverage is poor but the fact that I enrolled early gave me a very good plan. Therefore, what I did in the past 5 years was to consistently scanning for good phones to tackle the poor signal coverage in the area I live.

I've been through Qualcomm QCP-2760, Samsung 8500, Sanyo 4900 and now Samsung VI660. The old Qualcomm had a decent reception in its days but couldn't compare with Samsung 8500. The 8500 was a legendary phone that was solidly designed and built. However, there's more to be desired in terms of its reception. After an extensive research, I bought my wife a Sanyo 4900 when she started her plan. I found its battery life and reception was very good but Sanyo 4900's downside was its bulky design and clumsy menu.

Due to the consistent drop of calls when using Samsung 8500 at home, I was in the market again hunting for the next generation of cell phones that are reasonably priced but have the best reception. Sanyo has been regularly regarded as having excellent reception and battery life, which I could surely testify due to my ownership of the 4900. But I have to say I'm kind of fond of Samsung and its design due to my good experience with the 8500.

The past couple years marked a down period for Samsung though. After 8500, Samsung released many new phones that were viewed as having miserable reception. However, most recently, it seemed like things have changed. VI660 and VGA1000 received new chips and many good reviews come in from their users.

After comparing price and features, I opted for the VI660. I couldn't be happier with its name dial capability. It doesn't need any "training" and can recognize names very accurately. It certainly makes your driving much safer, too. If you use Samsung's earphone, all you need to do to dial a number is all "talk", after you press a button on the earphone cord to intiate the name dial procedures. The maneuver within its menu is very intuitive and the battery life is decent. In addition, VI660 was among the limited number of phones that support SMS. Even though I don't use it that often, it's still a nice feature to have. Maybe I'm not really picky about battery life but recharging once every two days with many phone calls and some web usage doesn't sound too bad to me.

However, the reception of Samsung VI660 is still not to my expectation. It is certainly better than the 8500 and offers a more "unbroken" conversation but I still suffer from dropping call which is less likely to happen to the Sanyo 4900. After so many attempts in keeping my plan by buying new phones, I am considering switching to Verizon even with the nice SprintPCS plan that I currently have. But if you are not living in an area that has poor signal coverage and you don't need a camera or external display, VI660 is truly an economic, feature packed and compact phone for you to have.

37 Runaway from this phone post haste!
I got this phone because it (cheap)for a 2-year contract. Me being the cheapskate I am, I went for it. Now,I'm paying the price for it by having a phone that stops working in the middle of calls, puts an echo into everything I say (on both sides of the call), has TERRIBLE battery life, and has calls where the person I speak with can't hear me but I can hear them or vice versa.

I should thank the people of Samsung for one thing though. They've taught me that you get what you pay for and from now on, I won't shortchange quality for the sake of a few extra bucks in my pocket. Sprint coverage in my area is great, but that means squat because of this dingy phone. I can't wait until my contract is up so I can get a new one. I'm already contemplating paying the termination fee just to get a new phone.

38 Good phone that works well and skips the junk
I bought the VI-660 because it is one of the few Sprint PCS phones to not come loaded with junk like cameras, PTT (Push to talk) etc. I wanted a new phone that had a long battery life, was as small as possible, and looked good and worked well. The VI-660 has lived up to my expectations, providing very good battery life, nice size and a very nice appearance overall. Sound quality is good (although when the signal is weak I notice some quiet high pitched noises in the background), and it tends to hold a signal quite well (hey, it's CDMA -- none of that GSM garbage!). I also would have liked an external LCD, but this is the best no-frills Sprint phone available right now.
39 One Great Phone !
Well, I've had this phone for a little over a week now and so far, it's a great phone. It's a good size, not too big, not too small, fits great in a purse. The menus are really easy to navigate and use. The sound quality is very crisp and clear. I've never had a dropped call and I can get great reception anywhere I take this phone. I even took the phone into both the basement at home and elevators at work and had 2 out of 4 reception bars with clear reception. The phone comes with about 40 different ringers but you can personalize your phone further by downloading ringers at 3gupload.com. The screen is crisp and the colors are vibrant. The keypad lights up to a bright blue whenever you open the phone. Also, a great feature which is not often mentioned is that this phone has a security lock. When set up properly, no one can operate your phone once it's turned on unless they know your secret lock code. Before this phone I had the Kyocera 2255 and that was an awesome phone but I felt that after having it for 2 and 1/2 years it was time for an update. The only drawback to this phone (although this is very minor) is that it doesn't have an external caller ID screen. So you have to flip the phone open to see who is calling. But that shouldn't be a big deal, it doesn't take that much energy to flip open a screen. Besides, remember the days when external screens didn't exist? We all survived that back then ... I don't see why we can't survive that still. Overall, this is a great phone and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a small camera-less flip phone.
40 It was great for about 5 minutes. I hate it!
I've had two of these phones in 2 days. I returned the first one just 4 hours after buying it. They both do the same thing. In the middle of a call or just sitting on the table, it decides to quit working. If I'm on a call, the person on the other end can hear me. I can't hear them. I lose all sound on my end. Typically if I turn it off and back on, it works again. I've done that 9 times (each time I give it several minutes to rest) without it ever recovering. Here goes attempt number 10... wish me luck. I'm not holding my breath.
41 Battery lasts about 2 days
I leave my phone on and I have found that I need to recharge it every two days. Otherwise, it has been a good phone with good reception, microphone and features.
42 Tiny little powerhouse
I love this phone. It's very small and compact, and feels good in your hand. Using it might be a little difficult for people with big hands though. It has a lot of features and takes some time to get up to speed with everything. I actually had to read the manual! One thing I don't like is that the manual and all the descriptions of this phone say you can download photos to add to entries in your phone book. That's a little deceiving because you can't download just any photo, you can only use the generic photos they provide. Other than that, I like it very much.
